How to “hide” contacts on the iphone for greater privacy

Do you have contacts on your iPhone that you want to keep private? Or, maybe you have a bunch of contacts that you want to keep, but don’t want appearing in your address book. iOS actually has a built-in way to do just that.

This even works if you’re trying to pare your contacts down to a something more manageable, while still holding on to people you might want to get in touch with at a later time. Before we talk about some of the finer points of contact privacy, let’s talk about a simple way to hide contacts from your address book.

Hide Large Amounts of Contacts by Making a Group, Then Hiding the Rest

The first solution is to group contacts together and then hide everyone else. Why do we do this? Because you can’t move contacts from the iCloud group to another, so you have to create a group we’re going to show, and hide the original iCloud group, which will hold all the contacts you don’t want to see.

There’s two ways to create new groups. On a Mac, click on “All iCloud” and then the “+” button.

Next, click “New Group”.

For those of you who don’t own a Mac, you can use iCloud at icloud.com. Log in and click on “Contacts”.

Now that you have created your group, it’s time to copy any contacts you want to show in your address book to that group. We’ll show you this process on iCloud, but it should be mostly the same on a Mac.

You could drag every contact one by one to the new group, or you can use the “Ctrl” key on a Windows keyboard or the “Command” key on a Mac to select multiple contacts. You can also use the “Shift” to select a range. Regardless, once you have select a contact or contacts, drag it to your new group.

Now, let’s turn to our iPhone. Open your contacts, and tap “Groups”.

If you have a bunch of contacts in your other accounts, then you can transfer them to your iCloud account on your Mac by simply dragging and dropping them using your Address Book. If you don’t use a Mac, you can use the vCard method outlined in this article.

Disguise Specific Contacts with a Nickname

The previous method covers how to show (or hide) a large group of contacts. If you’re just looking to hide a few names, though, and aren’t looking to remove them from the list entirely, you can simply give those contacts nicknames–which will hide their real name from your address book.

To do this, select the contact, tap the “Edit” button, and then scroll down and tap the “Add Field” option.

Tap “Nickname” and it will be added to the edit fields.

Now, whenever you are talking to a sensitive or private contact, it will be displayed on your phone by the nickname, allowing you to rest a bit more easy around potentially prying eyes.

Lock Down the App Switcher

If you use iOS 8, then one thing you might not have thought of is that whenever you open the app switcher in public, it will display your contacts as well people you have recently talked to.

If you’re out in public or around folks you want your contacts to remain hidden from, then this can be a problem.

You can easily hide contacts from the app switcher by opening the Settings, navigating to Mail, Contacts, Calendars, and ticking off the option “Show in App Switcher”.

Note, this feature and thus the ability to disable it, seems to have been removed from iOS 9.

Hide Contacts from Spotlight Search

Keep in mind, no matter how well you try to hide your contacts, they will still appear in Spotlight searches. To remove your contacts from searches, you’ll need to tap your Settings app and go to General > Spotlight Search.

Now, simply uncheck “Contacts” and “Phone” as well as any other items you don’t want appearing in Spotlight on your iPhone.

Hopefully this gives you an idea of how to better protect and hide your contacts on your iPhone. The last thing you want is someone snooping on your privacy.

It would be nice if Apple would include a straightforward method to hide certain contacts from the address book, perhaps by simply adding a “Hidden” group that could be toggled on and off, but for now, you will simply have to implement the workarounds detailed in this article.

There are lots of reasons you might want to hide the messages that pop up on your iPhone, especially those notifications that show up when your phone is locked.

Maybe you’re planning a surprise for your partner. Maybe your workplace doesn’t like you getting personal messages. Or maybe you just don’t like the idea of strangers being able to preview your text messages when they pop up on your iPhone.

Whatever the reason you want to hide text, WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, and other notifications, it only takes a few seconds to do it. And if you want to hide specific text message chains or the texts from a specific sender, that’s easy enough, too.

How to hide message notifications on an iPhone

If you don’t want messages popping up on your iPhone screen, you can shut the notifications down wholesale or on a case-by-case (app-by-app, e.g) basis.

1. Open the Settings app.

2. Scroll down to and tap “Notifications.” This will open a long list of every app on your phone that generates notifications.

3. To stop all notifications, tap “Show Previews” at the top of the screen, then select “Never.” You can also select “When Unlocked” to only partially limit message displays — you’ll only receive notification alerts when your phone is unlocked.

4. To stop notification alerts from specific apps, like your text messages, scroll down on the notifications page and find the app in question, then tap it.

5. Toggle “Allow Notifications” off to stop all of the app’s displays from popping up, or unselect the options you’d like just below (“Lock Screen” e.g.).

If you turn off all notifications, you will have to specifically open each app to read any messages sent to you, or you will have to open specific apps where you have restricted display options.

You can also only allow notifications to go to your Notification Center, which you can access swiping down from the top of the screen. In this case, alerts won’t show unless you go into the Notification Center.

How to hide messages from individual senders

If you don’t want to hide all of your notifications but you do want to hide specific text chains, or stop a specific sender’s messages from getting through to where they can be seen, there are two different approaches.

To hide message alerts from a specific text message chain:

1. Open the message(s) you don’t want displaying as the chain continues.

2. Tap near the top of the screen, by the icon of a face (or the person’s picture).

3. On the taskbar that appears, tap the “i” for “info.”

4. Toggle “Hide Alerts” on.

An alert will no longer display on your screen when a new text from this chain comes in, but you’ll still receive the text.

To hide messages from a specific person:

First, make sure you have the person’s contact info written somewhere else.

1. Open the contact whose messages you need to hide, then tap “Edit” in the top right corner.

2. Scroll down, and hit “Delete Contact,” then tap “Delete Contact” on the popup window to confirm.

3. Open the settings app and scroll down to and tap “Messages.”

4. Scroll down and toggle on “Filter Unknown Senders.”

The message sent from the person you removed (or anyone not in your contacts) will now go into a list kept separate from the rest of your messages.

This is because authentication is necessary to read the messages. Methods such as facial or fingerprint recognition are prerequisites to access the SMS.

Blur Chat allows you to delete messages from both the sender’s and receiver’s phones. In this way, messages are not kept in both lines. Automatic destruction of messages is possible through scheduling. Finally, the app allows you to modify the picture and name of the recipient. In this way, you can hide who you’re actually conversing with from meddlers.

Viber is another hidden text app iPhone and Android users can take advantage of. This is a very popular app that allows you to send and receive messages (and calls). Audio and video calls are possible and you can even make your own group chats. You can send fun and expressive messages with the use of GIFs and stickers. You don’t have to purchase these funny symbols just to use them.

Encryption technologies are possible from one end to another. Thus, your privacy is protected. Another feature of Viber is “Secret Chats.” When a person is added as a secret contact, messages can be automatically deleted for a set period of time.

A PIN or password can be used in order to hide messages from secret contacts. Notifications of messages from secret contacts are kept generic and hidden. In this way, no other person can read the messages of the secret contact.
