According to mukalodric, the first step to using your phone less is understanding how much you’re actually on it. “Seriously, if you do one thing, do that. Because once you find out you spend 6+ hours a day on your phone, it will be a sobering experience. If the stat comes to mind just once a day, you will use your phone less. There’s Screen Time (iOS) and Digital Wellbeing (Android) for this,” mukalodric says.

Instead of relying on your own willpower, mukalodric suggests restructuring your phone to make it less enticing. Here are some of their suggestions:
- “Delete apps you don’t need. Think hard about this because you might try to fool yourself.
- Put remaining time-wasting apps in one folder and give it a name like Time Sink.
- Put that folder in the second page of your home screen. Put the apps in the second page of the folder itself.
- Receive fewer notifications. Maybe keep them for emails. Disable them for Instagram, YouTube, etc.
- Use grayscale.On iOS, there’s an accessibility shortcutthat lets you switch back with three taps.
- Use asimpler wallpaperthat’s not bursting with colors. Something inspirational or just a solid color.
- Tweak your home screen setup every month or so to mess with your muscle memory.
- Delete certain apps and instead use their clunky mobile website counterparts.”

Netbooks are terrible, as most people now agree. They seemed like a good idea at the time, offering a cheap laptop experience in a small package. But they were ultimately too slow, too small, and too poorly built.
Many netbooks are now lying around, unused. If you’re one of the people who purchased a netbook and can’t bring yourself to use it, these tips may help you get some more value out of your investment.
Optimize Windows For Speed and Screen Space
Many netbooks came with Windows 7 Starter Edition and could barely handle it. If you’re using a netbook that came with Windows 7, you can speed it up with some simple tweaks:
- Reduce Startup Programs: Use a startup manager like the one included with CCleaner and disable as many startup programs as possible. The fewer programs that start, the more RAM your netbook has available for use. On slow netbooks, every program you can prevent from automatically starting can make a difference.
- Use Lightweight Software: Seek out lightweight software for your netbook instead of using heavier software. For example, try Sumatra PDF instead of Adobe Reader and a lightweight music player like foobar2000 instead of iTunes. If you need to write a basic document, try Abiword instead of Microsoft Word. Choosing lightweight software can make a massive difference in your netbook’s responsiveness.
- Tweak Your Browser: Optimize your browser for its low-resource environment. Use as few browser extensions as possible — these can suck up RAM and CPU cycles. Consider enabling click-to-play plugins in your browser so Flash content — including Flash-based advertisements — won’t slow things down unless you actually want to view it
- Enable Readyboost: ReadyBoost won’t offer a performance increase on modern machines with sufficient amounts of RAM, but ReadyBoost can offer a noticeable improvement on RAM-starved computers like netbooks. Just insert a USB drive or SD card and select the ReadyBoost option when prompted — Windows 7 will use the drive as a cache.
You should also consider making the most of what limited screen space you have available to you:
- Optimize Your Taskbar: Decide where you want your Windows taskbar. You’ll have more vertical space for applications and web pages if you placed it at the left or right side of your screen. Or, auto-hide the taskbar and it will stay out of sight most of the time.
- Hide Your Browser’s Interface: Hide unnecessary browser toolbars by right-clicking in your browser’s toolbar and selecting the appropriate option. You can also press F11 in any browser to hide the browser’s interface and make the current web page take up the entire screen. Press F11 again to disable full-screen mode.
Install a Lightweight Linux Desktop
Netbooks weren’t supposed to run Windows. The original netbooks ran lightweight Linux systems, but Microsoft wasted no time and started shipping netbooks with Windows XP — Windows Vista was too heavy — and then Windows 7.
In other words, machines that were originally supposed to run a slimmed-down version of Linux were eventually shipped with Windows 7, requiring antivirus software and all the other stuff that comes with the Windows desktop. It’s no surprise that the netbook market collapsed under the weight of these poorly-performing machines.
While your netbook may have shipped with Windows, you can replace it with a lightweight Linux system for free. We’ve covered the best Linux distributions for giving that old netbook a new lease on life. A Linux distribution like Puppy Linux can perform well even on systems with 256 MB of RAM. Puppy Linux can even be run entirely from a USB stick, so your netbook’s slow hard drive won’t be a factor. A lightweight Linux system may be just the thing to speed up a netbook that’s choking under the weight of Windows 7 and the requisite antivirus software.
Turn Your Netbook Into a Server
Okay, so maybe you’ve written that netbook off entirely. It seemed like a good idea at the time because you got such a good deal, but ultimately there’s no reason to use that netbook when you’re happy with another laptop. That doesn’t mean the netbook is completely worthless.
While netbooks may be ill-suited to offering a full desktop software experience, they offer higher-powered hardware than many embedded systems. You could turn that netbook into a server for your home network. For example, you could connect a large external hard drive and use it as a network-attached storage (NAS) device, a media server for other computers in your house, a place to back up files to, or even as an always-on BitTorrent machine. You shouldn’t buy a netbook to use as a server, but there are worse uses if you have one lying around.
Experienced Linux geeks can turn a netbook into a server just by installing an operating system like Ubuntu Server Edition and configuring the appropriate software on it. If you’re looking for something that’s more easy to set up, you may want to try a software distribution built for this purpose, like FreeNAS.
Ultimately, there’s no fixing the fundamental issues with netbooks in general — cheap build quality, terrible screens, and keyboards that are uncomfortable to type on. But, with some tweaks, they can still be of some use.
A few months ago, I was on vacation with my boyfriend when I decided it was time for me to say goodbye to my caffeine habit. I’d been relying on a cup of coffee or loose leaf tea to get me through the workday slog, PM activities, and even yoga classes since college. I didn’t need a health app to know my reliance on caffeine was psychologically unhealthy. And working in the health writing world made me aware that it can be physically damaging, too: The Mayo Clinic lists migraine headaches, insomnia, fast heartbeat, muscle tremors, and others, as side effects of drinking more than four cups of caffeinated coffee a day (or its equivalent in soda, energy drinks, and tea). I was no “five shots of espresso a day” gal, but, I wondered: If I eliminated caffeine from my daily routine, would I lose the late-night jitters and afternoon crashes I’ve become used to? In turn, would I have more energy, be more productive, and sleep better, too?
The first work week was brutal. I thanked heavens I worked from my apartment, and this 17-minute Yoga with Adriene Energy Practice on YouTube became my best friend. But, by the following week, the afternoon wall I hit faded away (even sans Adriene) and I had a much easier time falling asleep. Fast forward to two months later, and I’m happy to report I am still—somehow—caffeine-free. All the benefits I’d hoped for are real, and I even beat my mile time at Central Park’s reservoir. The five simple guidelines that follow are ones I’ve been living by:
1. Ease into it on vacation.
If you want to fast-track to the Land of Despair, starting your caffeine detoxification at work is an excellent idea. I found vacation an ideal time to lay off my caffeine habit. I could pop Strawberry Lemonade Nuun Electrolytes tablets to my heart’s delight. I could sleep in. And lying on the beach breezing through trashy romance novels doesn’t exactly require much concentration and energy. Once you have a week or so under your belt, post-vacation Monday still ranks pretty low, but at least you won’t have to add caffeine headache to your woes. your body also will likely find it easier to adjust to abstinence.
2. Keep a running list of all the ways giving up caffeine is improving your life.
Better sleep. More money in your pocket for artisanal seltzer. Less sugar or dairy in your diet (unless you drink your coffee black). Freedom from what is, technically, an addiction.
“Behavior change is often supported by connecting to the bigger values—the things that are important to you—that drive your life,” says Washington-based nutritionist Meghan Cichy, who specializes in the treatment of eating disorders and chronic dieting. “When our perspective is more positive and connected to our values, it can actually help us to feel less crappy about going through it.”
3. Brew up some teas.
Obviously, caffeinated teas are a no-go if you’re cutting out caffeine completely, but think beyond the office stash of good old Lipton. “Make teas using herbs in the adaptogen family of plants as coffee substitutes. Rhodiola, licorice, and maca are all energizing sans caffeine content, and are amazing for when you really need a pick-me-up,” says board-certified naturopathic physician Maria Geyman, ND. “Plus, part of being a habitual coffee drinker is the ritual of brewing and smelling the coffee, and that same ritual can be had when you make [these] teas.”
4. Find a productive substitute.
Diet Coke need not apply. But finding something that will make you feel less deprived as you give up caffeine will help make the transition easier and increase your odds that the habit sticks.
There are two types of people in this world: those who love running and those who would literally rather do any other form of exercise. Add a downpour to the mix, and I think we can pretty much all agree that the proper response to running is lol no thanks. Waterlogged clothes, soggy shoes, and chafing (oh, the chafing) don’t make for the most enjoyable 5k.
However, in some places (*cough* this writer’s home state of Oregon *cough*), you’d rarely ever get to run outside if rain were the mitigating factor in your workout routine. Besides, there’s only so much time you can spend inside running on a treadmill before you want to throw a dumbbell at the TV screens inexplicably playing The Great British Baking Show (seriously, who needs a reminder that cupcakes exist when you’re trying to be healthy?). So we chatted up the experts to get their best tips on how to run in the rain—without it totally sucking.
Some of them even described it as fun.
“Running in the rain is a different experience—it’s something new, and the variety alone makes it more exciting,” Aaron Forrest, a Boston Marathon finisher and certified coach at Gixo, says. “It’s nothing to be afraid of, and with a little preparedness, you might even look forward to the raindrops.”

Plus, there’s an awesome benefit to running in the rain: It keeps you cool. “I actually ran faster in the crazy rain/wind storm this year compared to last year’s marathon, likely because my heart rate was lower throughout the workout because the heart has to work harder in hot temperatures,” Forrest explains. “Sure, you need a little more mental toughness, and it feels hardcore—but who doesn’t want to feel a little more hardcore?”
Accurate. Ready to get hardcore with your runs? Here’s how you can turn a run in the rain into something you’ll actually enjoy.
1. Embrace the fact that you’re going to get wet.
Wrap your head around it: You’re not commuting to your office with an umbrella and rain boots, so yeah, you’re going to get wet if you go for a run outside when it’s raining. “I run in the rain quite often,” says Shaun Bohnsack, director of product for the Nature’s Gym category at Merrell.
“Living in Michigan, we have great fall weather and that leads to some fun rainy—sometimes snowy—runs. If I’m going out for a short run on the trail and it’s not too cold, a lot of times I will just embrace the rain. Run in a long-sleeve, lightweight shirt, shorts, and shoes that drain well.”
Paul Ronto, content director at RunRepeat, says that, contrary to what you might think, you should skip the rain jacket on your run. “When you head out for a run in the rain, you are going to get wet— own it. All a rain jacket is going to do is help you overheat, and odds are, you’ll be carrying it or tying it around your waist before the end of your run,” he says. “Instead, layer correctly to ensure you are warm enough but not trapping in heat.”
2. Never wear cotton.
Srsly tho. Cotton absorbs water, which means that when you get wet—which you will—your cotton clothes will hang onto all that water and create a generally soggy experience. “Anyone who’s ever gotten wet in cotton knows that it doesn’t feel good,” says Gillian Goerzen, personal trainer and health coach who lives on the “Wet Coast.”
“Not only will it be more prone to chafe because the wet, cold fabric sticks to your skin—you’ll be more likely to chill. It sounds funny, but technical wool is actually fantastic because it doesn’t feel cold and soggy when wet.” Ronto adds that materials like merino wool or polyester have thermal properties (even when soaked), making them a warmer, all-around better fabric choice for running in the rain. We especially love this shirt from Smartwool for cooler rainy fall runs.
“As the saying goes, there’s no bad weather, only bad gear,” adds Mirna Valerio, ultra-runner and Merrell ambassador. “If you have the right gear, you and rain can be friends.”
3. Put on a baseball cap.
This tip seems like a no-brainer, but it’s especially important to put a lid on your head if you wear contacts. “I’m a contact lens wearer, and there is pretty much nothing worse than rain in the eyes and irritated contacts,” Goerzen says.
“Hats rock in the rain—contact lenses or not,” Ronto says. “Although it won’t keep your head dry, it will keep some of the rain out of your eyes, making it easier to see.”
4. The right socks will save your life.
Those cotton ankle socks you bought in a 12-pack off of Amazon were a great bargain, but they are absolutely not coming on your run in the rain. It’s time to bust out your heavy-duty socks because if your feet ain’t happy… well, you know the saying. “Good socks are worth the investment!” Goerzen says. She’s partial to wool running socks (like these or these) and says that the no-cotton tip above is especially important when it comes to socks. (Say socks again. Socks!)
5. You don’t always need waterproof shoes.
Waterproof shoes seem like an obvious choice for a rain run, but Goerzen says that’s not always the case. “If you’re a roadrunner, a waterproof shoe can go a long way in keeping your feet dry,” she says. “But if you’re a trail runner, I’d personally recommend skipping the waterproof shoes. You’ll more than likely come upon giant puddles you can’t always avoid, or small creeks. Consider that once the water is in, it needs a route out.”
Bohnsack runs in the Agility Synthesis Flex. “I find that the tighter mesh handles mud and wet really well. Though it’s not waterproof, it works to keep debris out,” he says.
6. Get thee some Vaseline.
Chafing is the most unfair thing that can happen when you’re out being a total badass running in the rain. Congrats, you motivated yourself to work out in the rain: Your reward is raw, burning flesh!
“Think about adding some Vaseline to areas like where your socks end on your ankles, under your armpits, and on your bra straps. Nothing ends a run quicker than hot spots and raw skin,” Ronto says. You can also pick up an anti-friction stick like Megababe Thigh Rescue for $14, which protects skin from chafing with a blend of aloe, vitamin E, and grapeseed oil.
7. Change up your mindset.
Instead of being all Ugh, rain, try to be like, Hey rain isn’t ideal, but guess what? My body is capable of cool things, and I’m not the Wicked Witch of the West so some sky water isn’t going to melt me.
You’re being active in less than perfect conditions, and that makes you that much stronger. “Your focus should be on your run, how you feel, and the results,” says Andrew Nuñez, LA-based Barry’s Bootcamp and running coach. “See the rain as a tool and focus on how it can help you during your run—it can cool you down as you clock in the pace you’re striving for. Think of it as another minor obstacle to get stronger!”

Calling a person out on their bad behavior can be a difficult task, so I consulted with relationship and family therapist Roger S. Gil to get some professional advice on how to handle these potentially volatile interactions. Here’s what I learned.
Identify the Behavior and the Source of Your Hate
Before you can do anything at all, you need to figure out exactly what’s bothering you. Roger points out that when we’re often bothered by a person’s behavior, everything they do can seem like a problem:
When we are annoyed by someone’s bad behavior toward us, it’s easy to develop an overall dislike for that person. While this is natural, it can make even the most innocuous behavior seem bothersome. Do a self-check. Is it a particular behavior that’s bothering you or is it something about that person’s personality? If it’s the latter, then make sure you can identify what it is that they are doing in particular that’s bothering you. While you may not like the person, it’s seldom helpful to attack anyone’s overall character. Know what lies at the heart of your annoyance.
If you’re having trouble identifying the issue, go find a friend and vent. When you do, be as unbiased as you can and ask them to tell you if they think they’re overreacting. If it’s someone who has met or knows the person you have a problem with and you can trust them with your feelings, they’re a good candidate to help you sort things out. Once you know what’s bothering you, Roger suggests making sure it’s actually worth a confrontation. You can do that by rating its harmfulness:
It’s one thing to be bothered by something, it’s another to be harmed. While one can argue that being bothered is a form of harm, use that as the litmus test for when to confront someone who may be dangerous. After all, we can be bothered by the most harmless behavior if we’re having a bad day. That being said, it’s a good idea to define “harm” as something that causes you to experience an immediate negative outcome (e.g. it interrupts your sleep, it costs you money, etc.).
Calling out someone on their BS or bad behavior can be a big deal—especially for the target. It’s easy to get frustrated with others, but make sure you’re fighting a worthwhile battle before you fight it. If you’re just nitpicking silly little things, you’re going to look like the jerk.
Get Your Specific Complaint in Order and Confront the Person When You’re Not Angry
Once you’ve got the issue figured out, Roger suggests keeping your complaint short and specific:
When a manager has to officially reprimand an employee, he/she often has to be able to specify the exact incident that led to the corrective action. When someone is doing something that we find hurtful or overly-bothersome, we should be able to do the same thing. It shouldn’t be vague (e.g. “That person is mean”), it should be specific (e.g. “I hate it when that person eats off my plate without asking”). Doing this will help prevent you from entering a whine-fest when you confront the person because you’ll know where to focus in order to avoid a global assault on their character.
Your goal is to figure out exactly what’s bothering you. Prepare to be specific when you have your confrontation with the offending person. When you call them out, you don’t want the explanation to be encumbered by lots of useless details. That will just hurt your purpose. What’s also problematic is making that confrontation when you’re upset. Roger believes it’s best to calm down and approach the confrontation with a level head:
When teaching couples how to fight fairly, therapists will validate the clients’ anger if it’s an appropriate emotional response to something. The therapist will then tell the clients to avoid responding to their mates’ target behavior while experiencing an intense emotion. The same is true for confronting someone. While it’s tempting to tell someone off, doing so will likely get them to focus on the fact you’re telling them off and not on what you’re actually saying. I often tell clients to wait until their emotions die down (usually between 20-30 minutes) before attempting to confront the offending party.
When you’re ready to make your confrontation, you may only need to tell the person that the behavior is occurring. Often times people are simply oblivious. I once had a friend who used to stretch his legs across several seats in a movie theater. They’d inevitable end up blocking me and I’d have nowhere to put my legs. After trying to imply that this bothered me, I just told him and he never did it again. He had no idea I, or anyone else, even cared. But in the event you can’t just make your issue known, Roger suggests explaining yourself through cause and effect:
Use a “When you [insert behavior here], I feel [emotional effect of behavior here]” statement
In order to avoid the aforementioned global assault on someone’s character (which will seldom lead to desired results), we should focus our statement onto the behavior in question while communicating its effect on us. While it sounds like something we would use with a 3-year-old, sometimes providing a concrete “when you… I feel…” statement can help the person to focus on the behavior and consider making a change. The “global assault” approach will likely get you to be branded a “jerk” in their book and can actually increase the behavior if that person is a jerk.
You may not always succeed in changing a person’s bad behavior, but when you’re calling them out it’s always best to be kind, polite, and clear. If things don’t go your way, you can at least leave the confrontation knowing that you handled it maturely and responsibly.

Consideration for NSFW Content on the Reddit App
Reddit NSFW content is sometimes too over the top. Needless to say, it’s not good for kids; it can play games with their psyche. So, what you need to make sure is that you yourself are 18 years old to activate this setting. And in the case that you are, your need to make sure that no one else, especially your younger siblings, does not have access to your Reddit account. We’ve all had to deal with an infuriatingly itchy sweater at some point in our lives. And we can all pretty much agree that it is the absolute worst. Isn’t having to layer for winter bad enough? It’s enough to make you want to pack a bag filled with all-linen everything and buy a one-way ticket somewhere the temperature doesn’t go under 70ºF. Alas, that’s not always an option—but luckily, there is a fix for your annoying scratchy knits. And it’s pretty easy.
To make your itchy sweaters less, well, itchy, all you need to do is give them some TLC. Basically, you need to treat your knits the way you do your hair. And these five steps will get you there.
Turn the perpetrator inside out and soak it in cold water and a few tablespoons of white vinegar for 15 minutes, making sure that all the fibers are thoroughly saturated. Drain.
While the sweater is still wet, gently massage a generous amount of hair conditioner into the fibers. Avoid stretching the fibers, and don’t use a cheap hair conditioner, since those usually contain waxes that will cause a weird buildup.
Let the conditioner sit on the sweater fibers for 30 minutes, then rinse thoroughly with cold water. Gently press excess water out of the knit, being careful not to stretch the garment out of shape.
Dry it flat on a towel. Once it’s fully dry, fold it neatly and place it in a large ziplock bag.
Now place the sweater in the freezer and let it sit overnight. In the morning: No more itchy sweater!
Here’s why these five steps work: The vinegar and the conditioner soften the fibers, while freezing keeps the shorter fibers from sticking out, sort of like how a cold blast from the hair dryer smooths your hair.
There are other factors to keep in mind when it comes to figuring out why your sweater is itchy in the first place.
Check the fiber content of the offensive garment. It’s possible you’re allergic to its natural fibers; wool, alpaca, cashmere, and angora are common irritants for some people. And if you’re allergic, no amount of soaking and freezing will help. Donate the sweater to Goodwill and look for knits made from acrylic instead.
Similarly, some fibers are just coarse and itchy no matter what. If you don’t feel like wearing a button-down or turtleneck under your sweater all the time, donate it. Remember: Life’s too short to deal with annoying sweaters.
