How to make the modular apple watch face multicolored

The Modular face on the Apple Watch, regardless of the series that you have, is one of the most useful Watch faces there is. It also doesn’t require you to own the latest and greatest Series 4 to get the most information possible on your Apple Watch either.

I’ve been a user of the Modular face for years, because it lets you have up to five complications at once, giving you a plethora of information in a single glance. And while I prefer to have the Modular face in a single color to match whatever band I’m wearing (in this case, Spearmint), there is a multicolored option that looks nice too. Here’s how to activate it.

How to choose the Modular clock face on the Apple Watch

There are two ways to do it. The easiest way is through the Watch app.

  1. Launch the Watch app on your iPhone.
  2. Find the Modular face in your My Faces selection.
    • If it is not there, you can find it from the Face Gallery section. Scroll down to the Modular selection, and find a color you like, then tap it to view it. Tap Add to add it to your faces.
  3. Tap on the Modular face that you want to use.

Scroll to the bottom and tap on Set as current Watch Face.

If you do not have your phone handy, you can also do it directly on your Apple Watch.

  1. Start on your Apple Watch’s clock face.
    • If you’re not already there, just double press the Digital Crown.
  2. Press down firmly on the clock face until the face switcher appears.

Swipe left or right until you find the Modular Face.

  • If you did not already add it to your faces, you can scroll all the way to the right and tap on the + New button. Then scroll vertically (either with swipes or the Digital Crown until you find the Modular Face. Select it and your face switches to the Modular face.

How to choose the multicolor option for the Modular face

Like choosing the watch face itself, it’s easiest to do it through the Watch app.

  1. Launch the Watch app on your iPhone.
  2. Tap the Modular face in My Faces.
  3. Scroll all the way to the left in the Color section and select Multicolor.

Your Modular watch face is now Multicolor.

You can also do this on the Apple Watch itself, but it is a longer, and more annoying process.

  1. Start with the watch face, and make sure that it’s on the Modular watch face.
  2. Press down firmly on the watch face until the face switcher appears.
  3. Tap on the Customize button.
  4. Rotate the Digital Crown counter-clockwise until you get to the Multicolor option.

Press the Digital Crown to return to the face switcher, and once more to return to the clock face.

How to set up custom complications for the Modular face

Again, the easiest and more convenient way to do this is through the Watch app.

  1. Launch the Watch app on your iPhone.
  2. Tap on your Modular face in My Faces.
  3. Underneath the color options are five complications (Top Left, Middle, Bottom Left, Bottom Middle, and Bottom Right).
  4. Tap on the complication position that you want to change.
  5. Select the app complication that you want to display in the selection dial.

Changes should reflect immediately on your Apple Watch, but you can tap on Set as current Watch Face at the bottom to make sure.

You can also do change complications directly on the Apple Watch.

  1. Starting with the clock face on your Apple Watch, press down firmly until the face switcher appears.
  2. Tap Customize.
  3. Swipe right to switch from the color option to complications.
  4. Tap on the complication you want to change.
  5. Rotate the Digital Crown to go through all of your available complications.

Once you’ve made your selections, just press the Digital Crown to return to the face switcher, and then one more time to get back to the clock face.

Questions?

As you can see, it’s pretty easy to change the Modular face to multicolored, making it easier to differentiate all of your complications on it.

May 2019: Added steps for using Apple Watch to add the multicolored Modular watch face.

The Modular watch face on the Apple Watch allows you to change the color of the time and the complications to one color of your choice. However, now a “Multicolor” option is available that makes the time and each complication on the watch face have a different color.

Displaying multiple colors on the Modular watch face is easy. Press the digital crown until you return to the watch face and then force touch on the watch.

The watch face gets smaller with the name of the watch face displayed at the top of the screen and a “Customize” button at the bottom. Tap “Customize”.

The first screen allows you to change the color of the time and complications. Rotate the digital crown counter-clockwise until you reach the top of the list of colors, which is the “Multicolor” option.

If you swipe left to go to the complication selection screen, you can see the different colors assigned to the different complications in each spot on the watch face, including third party complications. Press the digital crown to select the “Multicolor” option and return to the watch face selector screen.

On the watch face selection screen, either press the digital crown again or tap the watch face to exit the watch face selector and display the multicolored Modular watch face.

The time and complications on the watch face display in different colors.

Note that the colors for the time and complications are predefined. You cannot select different colors for the time and complications, at least not in this version of the watch OS.

I like the Modular watch face on the Apple Watch: it displays the information I want in a way that’s easy to see at a glance. Previously, I had set my watch to a bright yellow color, since that stands out best against the black background in light environments.

I installed watchOS 2 yesterday, and as I was fiddling with the colors, I spotted this new multicolor option. I like this. The white lets you see important information quickly, and the other colors add variety. You can’t change any of the colors, but I think they are well chosen. The activity rings show the same colors as when you view them in a glance, or in the Activity app. Weather is blue, which seems to make sense, and it would be cool if it got redder as the temperature increased (it doesn’t). And the battery indicator is green; it should turn orange and red as the battery depletes.

And the battery indicator is green; it should turn orange and red as the battery depletes.

It should or it does? The screenshot hast he battery at 46% but it’s still green I figure it would be yellow by that point.

I think it should; it doesn’t change color, no matter what the charge level is.

If your Infograph complications went a ghostly white, there’s a quick fix.
Photo: Lewis Wallace/Cult of Mac

Did your Apple Watch’s Infograph face go monochromatic for seemingly no reason at all? If upgrading to watchOS 6 sapped your Apple Watch Series 4 of all its multicolored complications, there’s an quick way to bring back the glory … mostly.

It’s easy, but it’s not as obvious as it could be. Plus, some people aren’t happy about the way Apple changed the Infograph face’s customization options.

When Apple showcased the Infograph watch face during the Series 4 rollout last year, some people thought it looked like “unicorn puke.” The explosion of color certainly took a little getting used to, but the wealth of complications proved addictive. I came to love the crazy color scheme. And I found myself missing the multicolored madness when my Infograph face went a ghostly blue/white after the watchOS 6 upgrade. It’s especially weird seeing your Activity rings as a series of stark white concentric circles.

Make Apple Watch Infograph face colorful again

To return your Infograph watch face to its colorful original look, hard-press your Apple Watch face. Then tap Customize. Next, use the Digital Crown to scroll through your almost endless color options. Go to the top of the list and choose Black or White to get the colorful complications back. (Note: On Infograph Modular faces, you need to scroll up to select Multicolor.) Finally, tap the Digital Crown twice to confirm your settings.

If you prefer, you can do the same thing using the Watch app on your paired iPhone. In the My Watch tab, go to My Faces. Swipe through your existing options to find the Infograph (or Infograph Modular) face, then tap it. Under Color, select the White or Black (or Multicolor) option.

Why did this happen?

As noted in the watchOS 6 release notes, Apple added new monochrome complications in Infograph and Infograph Modular. If you previously selected an accent color for one of those faces — say, a dark green to go with your favorite green band — Apple likely kept your chosen accent color, but paired it with the new monochrome complications.

To me, the monochrome complications look like those grayed-out baseball hats. But not everybody loves the new look.

“I loved the info graph watch face, but now not so much because I can’t change the accent color to match my band like I used to do, said commenter ScottNWDW on MacRumors.

Twitter user Ray Leonard apparently isn’t a fan, either. He said “watchOS 6 fails” on his Series 4 and posted screenshots of the monochromatic Infograph faces.

If you use one of the Infograph watch faces on your Apple Watch, you may be surprised to find that the colors have drained from your chosen complications since you updated to watchOS 6.

Despite how it may first seem, the sudden grayscale look is not a bug, but an intentional watch face change that Apple describes as “new monochrome complications in Infograph and Infograph Modular” in the watchOS 6 release notes.

The way Apple has implemented the feature is a bit confusing initially, because the monochrome style appears by default if you’ve selected one of the various accent colors for your watch face. The chosen accent remains, but the complications display in monochrome.

If you don’t like it, you can reinstate color complications by following these simple steps.

  1. On your Apple Watch, hard press on the monochrome Infograph watch face.
  2. Tap Customize.

  • On Infograph watch faces, use the Digital Crown to scroll up and select either the Black or White color option. On Infograph Modular faces, scroll up and select Multicolor.
  • Press the Digital Crown twice to confirm your selection and exit the customize screen.
  • You can do the same thing in the Watch app on iPhone. Select the My Watch tab and tap the offending watch face under My Faces, then select Black, White, or Multicolor from the color options.

With the Apple Watch Series 4, Apple has introduced two new information-rich faces that take advantage of the new device’s larger display. The Infograph and Infograph Modular faces offer lots of complications, in an attractive multi-color layout.

As Jason Snell wrote recently on Macworld, Apple Watch faces are a mess. None of the older faces have been updated for watchOS 5 and the new watches, and the new faces are missing some key complications, as I wrote last week. It really surprises me that you can’t add the Phone, Messages, or Home complications to the new faces. And I’m even more surprised that the old faces have been completely ignored.

One point that Jason makes, which I’ve been thinking about last year, is that the Explorer face is still the only one that shows your cellular connection, with a complication that shows from one to four dots.

Why not build that feature as a complication? Why not let other faces display that information? A year later, the Explorer face remains unchanged, and remains the only place you can view connection status on a watch face.

It seems important to have the possibility to see your signal strength if you have a cellular Apple Watch, and this omission is puzzling.

I’ve settled on the following three faces on my watch for now: two “analog” Infograph faces, and one Infograph Modular.

I would really like to use the Home complication on at least one of these faces, and I’m surprised that it’s not available. I’m also surprised by some of the complications that are offered, which are nothing more than eye candy. Here’s the Infograph Modular face with the Earth, Moon, and Solar complications at the bottom.

I think these are available simply as filler, since many people want to use all the complications inside the dial of the Infograph face. I don’t see how the Earth complication is very useful; I do understand that a moon phase complication is something found on many watches, but in a more stylized manner; and the Solar System complication is probably only useful for people on the International Space Station, and, perhaps, Elon Musk.

I’m also surprised that many popular third-party apps have not been updated for these new complications. For example, I use the Dark Sky app for weather, and it’s complication hasn’t been updated, even though the app itself has been updated since the release of watchOS 5. I don’t know what’s taking developers so long.

(I’m sure some of you will ask about some of the complications above, which are not in watchOS. The orange one on each of the faces is the Pedometer app, which is a step counter; and the one with the date on the face on the right above is Fantastical, the calendar app I use on all my devices.)
