I’ve been on Yahoo Mail for years and while most of my friends are now on Gmail or their own Web-based email programs, I like Yahoo. It’s easy, and everyone knows my address as being @yahoo.com. However, I would like to get a bit more sophisticated about my use by working with folders so that everything isn’t just sitting in my inbox. Can I create and use folders in Yahoo Mail?

Yahoo Mail. I’ve had a Yahoo account for an incredibly long time. In fact, I remember the very early days with Yahoo when it was actually a site that offered a collection of bookmarks. And Yahoo actually started as a collection of Jerry Yang’s Sumo Wrestling web site bookmarks. Seems like that should be part of the logo, doesn’t it? 🙂
You’re right to want to move towards having folders help you organize your email too, whether you’re using Yahoo Mail, Gmail or any other email service. I have two different email systems I use and each has over 50 folders for projects by client, different sites I’m involved with, specific mailing list archives, and even folders to let me organize discussion by family member. Very helpful and it’s how I only have 5-10 messages in my inbox at any given time. (read “retain my sanity”).
Yahoo Mail does indeed have a folder capability and it’s pretty nicely integrated into the system with the latest facelift that Yahoo’s given the service. Let’s have a look!
Open up Yahoo Mail and on the top left, you’ll see something very similar to this:

How to make yahoo! mail folders
Look closely on the left column and you’ll see “FOLDERS” listed. We’ll come back to that. For now, just open up a specific message and look at the options along the top:
How to make yahoo! mail folders
To move a message (or if you’ve checked the boxes adjacent to a bunch of messages in the previous mailbox view, a bunch of messages) to a specific folder, click on “Move”.
But what if I don’t have any folders set up yet?
Patience, young Padewan. Look at the next screen snippet:
How to make yahoo! mail folders
As highlighted, the “Move” menu shows you all the folders you’ve already created — mine are “Archive”, “Clients”, “Family” and “Play” — two system folders — “Spam” and “Trash” — and the key entry, “New Folder”.
Choose New Folder to create a folder for this specific message and then automatically move the message into the newly created folder…
How to make yahoo! mail folders
Enter a folder name that’ll help you remember what’s inside, click “OK” and you’re done. Next time you’re reading a message, the folder you just created will be listed on the “Move” menu, so it’ll be even easier.
Let’s shift attention back to the left side of the Yahoo Mail screen before we’re done, however, because it’s pretty darn important to know how to get to these folders once created. Here’s what the left side navigational column looks like:
How to make yahoo! mail folders
See the tiny gray triangle adjacent to “FOLDERS” that’s pointing towards the right? Click on it and you’ll open up the list of your mail folders:
How to make yahoo! mail folders
Click on one of the folder names and you’ll be viewing the message or messages you’ve filed in that folder. Ready to go back to your Inbox? That link’s on the top left too. Easy enough.
Oh, and if you want to create a bunch of folders without necessarily having messages to store in them all, the “+” symbol next to “FOLDERS” is useful too:

You can also use the keyboard shortcut of Cmd + Shift + E but i know I’m never going to remember that for something I’d use as infrequently as a create new folder feature.
In any case, that should get you started organizing your email in Yahoo Mail!

The Email app on Amazon’s Fire tablets is very easy to use and it has nearly all the features you might need on a daily basis. If you are wondering how to create email folders on a Fire tablet, however, you might be slightly disappointed. Unfortunately, the Fire OS Email app does not have a native option for creating folders.

How to make yahoo! mail folders

This means that the only way you can create folders on a Fire tablet is via your email client of choice. We will show you how to create email folders on Gmail, Outlook, and Yahoo email clients. Read on to find out more.

How to Create Email Folders in Gmail

Before we begin with the instructions, you should know that the best way to create folders in any of the email clients is on your computer. Alternatively, you can use your smartphone and install the dedicated app, or use the web version on your mobile browser.

In either case, you should create and organize your email folders beforehand, and that way it will be much easier to access them on your Fire tablet. Follow the steps to create email folders in Gmail:

  1. Log into your Gmail account using any web browser.
  2. Click on the Gear button above your email correspondence, at the top of your screen. Select Settings.
  3. Select Labels (Gmail started calling folders labels a while ago, when they made some quality of life changes, but the two are basically the same thing).
  4. Tap on Create new label and after you name it, confirm with Create.
How to make yahoo! mail folders

After that, you can assign different labels to your emails or email senders. Simply open a message, click on the tag icon at the top (Label) and assign it a new label.

How to make yahoo! mail folders

You can even assign labels to the messages you are sending as well. Click on the three dots in the bottom-right while composing a message and select Label.

How to Create Email Folders in Outlook

Microsoft Outlook is the default email client on Windows and still many people are using it. Moreover, many non-Windows users also use this platform. Creating email folders in Outlook is also fairly easy. Follow the steps:

  1. Open Outlook on your computer.
  2. Click on the Folder option at the top of the screen.
  3. Then select the New Folder option. Name it and customize it to your liking.
  4. Confirm creating the new folder with OK.

After you create an email folder in Outlook, you can do many things with it. You can rename it if you want to use it for a different purpose. More importantly, you can move emails to this folder. Simply, open the message you want to move, and add it to your new email folder. You can even delete folders that you don’t want to use anymore.

How to Create Email Folders in Yahoo

Yahoo Mail is also a very popular email client. If you have a Yahoo account, you can easily create email folders in it. Just follow the steps:

  1. Log into your Yahoo Mail account.
  2. Scroll down to the Folders tab and click on New Folder (+).
  3. Name the folder anything you like and confirm with Enter.
  4. Click on your new folder to open it.

You can then rename the folder, or even delete it entirely, after clearing it out. More importantly, you can move the messages to folders. View a message, click on Move near the top of the screen and select the desired folder.

How to Organize Your Email Folders on Amazon Fire Tablets

Adding more folders is easy, but you should be careful not to overdo it. You can sort the messages in your inbox in several ways. The default settings show you newly received emails first, at the top of the list.

You can tap on the Newest icon near the top of your inbox and change the criteria by which your emails are sorted. You can choose the emails to be organized according to the subject, the sender, unread or read messages, attachments, or even view the list from the oldest to newest.

To move a message to an email folder, tap on it and then select the Move option. Select the folder into which you’d like to move the message and confirm with Done.

Within the Folders tab, you can select the Edit List option. Checkboxes will appear next to every message, and you can choose what to do with the messages you select (delete, move, etc.).

If you want to remind yourself of a message, select it and tap on Unread so it will appear at the top of your inbox once again. You can also mark inappropriate messages or spam with the flag icon located to the right on the message screen.

How to Search Your Inbox

Don’t forget that you can always search for specific emails on the Fire tablet. Within the Email app, select the Search option and enter a query. You can search for the subject of the email, the sender’s name, or the words you remember from the text in the email.

Once you find the message you were looking for, move it to a folder where you can find it more easily. You can also check the Trash folder and see if you have mistakenly deleted a message. Deleted messages can be restored unless you have cleared out the Trash folder.

Email Folders Organized

After you create email folders in your email client, sorting, viewing, and finding emails on your Fire tablet should be much simpler and easier. It is a shame that the Fire OS app doesn’t have a native option for creating email folders, but hopefully it will be added in the future.

What are your thoughts on Fire OS’s native email app? Do you find it useful? What would you add to it? Let us know in the comments section.

I might be old school, but I still use Yahoo Mail and really like the new interface with all its colorful theme options. Fun, easy, but frustrating: I can’t seem to create new mail folders in Yahoo Mail. What am I doing wrong?

You’re not the first person to report that you’re having problems with the task of creating a new folder in Yahoo Mail. In fact, complaints go back over two years for people who are using the “new” interface (of course at this point it’s not really new) and finding that the new folder button doesn’t do anything. Heck, I bumped into this problem myself writing up this tutorial.

The problem appears to be one of layers in the fancy HTML that Yahoo is using for its new Yahoo Mail interface, which means that it’s kinda hard for you as a user to fix. There are actually three different ways to create a new folder, however, so let’s step through the options before you get too frustrated.

The first and most obvious is the secret button that’s on the left menu:

How to make yahoo! mail folders

Can’t see the “new folder” option? I did say it’s secret, right? 🙂

Move your cursor over “Folders” and it shows up:

Click on it to create a new folder:

How to make yahoo! mail folders

If you don’t see that window pop up in the middle of your screen, what I found worked was to click on “Folders” to have it hide all the subfolders. Then I could click and create a new folder easily enough.

Still not working? Find a message, any message, then click on “Move” along the top:

How to make yahoo! mail folders

The last choice is “New Folder”. Choose that.

Or, if you’re really feeling bold, try the key sequence suggested: “D” then “Control+Shift+E”. I couldn’t get the latter to work at all on my Win 8.1 system running Chrome but perhaps you’ll have better luck.

And if none of those options work, well, there’s always Gmail.

Almost everyone uses email. Like traditional mail, it can pile up if left unchecked. Yahoo! has a nifty feature that helps filter your mail into folders so your email accounts are easier to manage. Knowing how to create a filter in Yahoo! Mail can make your life immensely easier.

You can keep organized and create up to one thousand custom filters in Yahoo! Mail that will sort new messages to the folders that you define. This feature even allows you to send unwanted content to your spam folder or directly place items in the trash. While most spam should already be in the spam folder, some may slip through. Applying a filter in your Yahoo! Mail will help you remove those pesky spam emails that make their way in to your regular inbox.

Keep in mind, other email clients like Gmail or Outlook also provide similar features.

With Yahoo! Mail, you can connect all or most of your other email accounts and keep other inboxes organized with filters as well. Simply go to Settings→ Accounts + Add another mailbox from the Settings gear in the top right corner of the Yahoo! Mail home screen. From within the Settings popup window, you can also import and export contacts and do other cool stuff. Play around with the settings to see which configuration works best for you.

You can login to your Yahoo! account from any web browser and download the app from Google Play Store and Apple’s App Store.

How to add a filter in Yahoo! Mail

To add a filter is simple. Follow these easy steps to get started with Yahoo! Mail filters:

    No credit card required.

First thing’s first: In Gmail, folders are referred to as labels.

Now, this part’s easy. Like, really easy.

To create a label, all you have to do is go to the left side of your inbox and click More. From there, you’ll see the option Create new label. In the pop-up window, name your label:

Note: You’ll also notice the option to Nest label under — where you can create new subfolders.

Let’s say, for example, you have a main folder for Google Alerts and you’d like to organize alert emails by month. You could create a label “Google Alerts” and then subfolders like “January” and “February” to nest each month underneath.

Another way to create labels is by going through Settings:

    1. Click the Settings icon.
    2. Go to the Labels tab.
    3. At the bottom, click Create New Label .
    4. Name the label.
    5. Click Save.

How to Quickly Add a Label to a Message Sent To You

Now let’s go over how to create folders in Gmail for messages already in your inbox :

    1. Open the message.
    2. Click the Label button (It has a tag icon).
    3. Check off each label to want to add, or type a new label.

Pro tip: Add labels to multiple messages by selecting the emails from your inbox view and then clicking the Label button.

How to Automatically Label an Email Based on Search Criteria

    This part’s awesome.

If you want to know how to create folders in Gmail but don’t want to do the work each time, this is for you.

Click the down caret in the Google search bar, you can create automatic labels based on criteria.

Once you determine your criteria, click Create filter with this search (bottom right corner) then apply the label by clicking the Choose label drop-down:

How to Turn a Nest Label Into a Parent Label

    1. In Settings , click Edit in the actions column (for the label you want to move).
    2. Make sure Nest label under is not checked.
    3. Click Save.

How to Manage Your Gmail Labels With Ease

Once you create labels, you may need to tweak them.

Whether you need to rename a label, hide one that you don’t want to delete, or remove a label altogether, there’s a simple solution for that within the Labels tab of Settings .

You can get there by either clicking More on the left-side of your inbox (then Manage Labels ), or through Setting then Labels (as mentioned in previous step).

From this screen, you’ll see your labels (and sub-labels) listed with the option to show or hide them in the label list or message list.

From here, you can also remove or edit your labels:

How to Add a Label to a Message You’re Sending

This trick comes in handy when you’re sending outgoing messages that you want to be labeled:

    1. Click Compose .
    2. In the bottom right corner, click More options .
    3. Click Label .
    4. Choose a label to add.

    2. Today : Time-sensitive. Requires a quick response.
    3. This week : Needs to stay top of mind by the end of the week.
    4. This month : Needs a longer-term response.
    5. FYI : An email that you may need to reference later. Purely informational.

Pro tip : Set a reminder email for Friday to respond to emails in the “This Week” inbox.

However , the way you organize your emails depends on what is most helpful for you.

    After all, it’s your inbox.

Get started by listing out a few categories that your messages might fall into and start there. Remember, you can always delete or change labels if the methods aren’t working.
