Whether it be a colleague, family member, or friend, there is likely someone that you’re reluctantly following on Instagram.
If you’re not a fan of what they post to their feed or in their stories, but don’t want to unfollow them at the risk of hurting their feelings, the app provides you with options to mute their content.
Here are three different ways that you can mute someone on Instagram.

It might be impolite to unfollow a new co-worker on Instagram. If you don’t want to see someone’s Stories and posts, but you want to continue messaging, try muting them. Here’s how to mute someone on Instagram.
When you mute a profile, Instagram doesn’t notify them about your action. There are a couple of ways to mute someone’s posts or Stories (or both). Here’s the first.
How to Mute Someone on Instagram
From the Instagram app for iPhone or Android, navigate to the profile of the person or page that you want to mute.
Here, tap the “Following” button found near the top of the profile.
From the menu that appears, tap the “Mute” button.
Now, tap on the toggle next to “Posts” and “Stories.” You won’t see their posts on your feed and their Instagram Stories will be hidden by default.
If you only want to mute someone’s Stories, you can tap and hold their profile icon from the Instagram Stories row at the top of the mobile app to open a menu.
From here, tap the “Mute” button. Their Stories will be muted and hidden instantly.
If you want to mute someone when you come across their post on your feed, tap the three-dot Menu button found near the top of the image.
Here, you can choose the “Mute” option from the menu.
Now, if you only want to mute their posts, select the “Mute Posts” option. If you want to mute both their posts and Stories, select the “Mute Posts And Story” option.
How to Unmute Someone on Instagram
Even when you’ve muted someone, you can always go to their profile to see their posts and Stories. If you want to unmute them, tap the “Following” button from their profile again, and then from the menu, select the “Mute” option.
Now, tap on the toggles next to “Posts” and “Stories” to unmute the Instagram profile.
Is muting the profile not helping? You can block them on Instagram instead.
Everyone has those people they follow on Instagram that when they come up in your feed, you can’t help but roll your eyes or scroll even faster (Don’t lie: a certain someone just popped up in your head, didn’t they… ?)
Maybe they’re guilty of being multi-posters (someone who posts more than once a day on Instagram), maybe their Stories are way too much and way too frequent, or maybe the content their posting has shifted from fun and interesting to constant selfies and “deep”, motivational quotes.
Regardless of your reasons for getting sick of your co-worker, friend, or family member on Instagram, sometimes hitting the Unfollow button can cause a lot more problems than you’d expect: some people have apps that track who unfollows them and they’ll know the second you say bye-bye to their profile, and that could make things a wee bit awkward during your next work meeting, birthday party, or family gathering (ever have someone come up to you and ask why you unfollowed them? Yeah. It’s really awkward).
Now Instagram has released a feature that allows users to merely mute a profile rather than unfollow altogether, and while this option has existed for IG Stories for a while, it is a brand new option for full profiles and posts.
Instagram said that it added this feature to make your feed more personalized, but it acknowledges there was clearly user demand. “We’ve also heard it may be a useful tool for managing complex social dynamics,” said a rep for the company. (BuzzFeed)

Instagram recently introduced a new feature called Mute User that allows you to hide a user’s posts from the feed without removing their Follow, a way to choose how and when to see what they publish, without necessarily removing it from your account.
With the Mute User function, it will be possible to silence all the most annoying contacts, avoiding displaying the posts published daily in your feed, without letting them know that you have decided not to follow them anymore.
Sometimes, having a good number of Instagram followers can be important, especially for those who do business, so unfollowing one or more users could lead to similar behavior, negatively affecting the number of followers.
This function is very similar to Facebook, which allows you to silence and hide photos, videos, and stories posted by a user without deleting him from his friends, basically for the same reasons that push us not to remove them from Instagram.
Furthermore, it is possible to make a clear choice, selecting the type of content to “mute” between only photos and videos with stories or all but individually; in the latter case, the user is wholly obscured without removing them from the following list.
How to Mute Users?
The procedure for muting a user is an effortless operation that can be done by following three ways, all fairly immediate and easy to perform.
Mute User From Feed
In this case, tap on the three dots next to the username and choose the Mute item.
Mute User From the Stories Tray
The stories tray is the area at the top of the feed where you can see the most recent stories; in this case, hold your finger on the profile for a few seconds and then choose Mute.
Mute Users From Their Profile
Let’s go to the user profile we want to mute and tap on the dots at the top right and then choose Mute.
Even if you decide to mute an Instagram profile, it will always be possible to see their posts by going directly to the user’s page; you will receive notifications on comments and posts in which you are tagged.
Why and How to Use the Instagram Mute User Function?
The Mute User function has several uses and can be used for various reasons as a substitute for a more drastic choice, such as deleting a contact.
This function is beneficial if you want to hide from the Instagram feed photos and videos of people who post content that is not pleasant or of little interest but still have followers.
Sometimes you decide to start following someone on Instagram for knowledge or because, at first glance, it seems that that person publishes exciting content. Then, over time you realize that you no longer want to see their photos and videos; in this case, the Mute User function is ideal not to be rude.
Until recently, it was not possible to “mute” the contact activity; now, it can be done without negatively affecting the number of followers on your account.
Even in the case of the private Instagram account, the Mute user function is beneficial. Beforehand, if you no longer wanted to see the contents of a specific user, you had to remove them from friends. But this meant that to regain access to their profile in case of second thoughts, you must send a new follow request, and the answer was not always positive.
Now, in the same way as “public” profiles, even private ones can be silenced, preventing photos and videos from being shown in the feed without removing the “Follow” and, therefore, without losing access to the private account.
Another positive aspect? Muted people will not know anything about this choice and how all their contents have been hidden.
Beyond the ability to mute contacts who publish unwanted content, this function allows you to have a personalized feed. You can decide to leave only the Instagram accounts that post videos and photos of interest and mute everything else.
What Happens When You Mute Someone?
You can still watch all of the Stories of a muted user if you scroll to the end of your Story Feed, they will be here with Stories you’ve already watched. So, you won’t miss out on anything.
However, you have to enter their profile manually to see the picture posts and videos they shared. Hence, you can scroll down on your Feed and see their stuff.
If you wish to unmute someone, you can follow the same process to do so. They won’t know that you muted and unmuted them.
How to Unmute Users?
Maybe for some reason, you had an afterthought on a muted user, and you want to unmute them to see again the content that they publish on the feed; how to do?
Also, in this case, unmuting a user is simple, and it is possible to do it with a swift procedure:
- Go to the user’s profile
- Tap on the ellipsis at the upper-right,
- Choose Unmute
FAQs About Instagram Mute
Sometimes you have to follow some people on Instagram. Thanks to the mute feature, you will not see these users’ movements by muting their posts.
You can mute users by clicking the Mute option by entering the user profile you want to mute on Instagram.
If you mute a user on Instagram, that user will not be notified.
You can set your Instagram notifications either on the device or in the profile settings.
If other users block your Instagram profile, you will not receive any notification.
You can edit your Instagram direct message notifications in the settings section or turn them off.
Conclusion on Instagram Mute – Silence Can Be a Gem
As we have seen, this function is beneficial, and it is also quite simple to use; there is a small downside: unlike what happens for blocked users, it is not possible to have a general overview of those that you have decided to mute.
Instagram has a dedicated page that collects the list of all blocked users, while no section allows you to see all muted users, which means that you have to remember them by heart or write them down somewhere.
Most likely, after introducing this feature, Instagram will already be working on how to make a list of muted users available to facilitate quick unmuting in case of second thoughts.

I’m not a huge fan of Instagram accounts posting lengthy strings of Stories each day. It clogs my feed, makes it tougher to scroll back and forth between Stories, and generally aggravates me. In fact, I hate Story spamming so much I’ve had to unfollow some of my favorite accounts.
That is until I found out about ‘muting’ Stories.
Here’s how to do it:
- Open Instagram and scroll to the Story carousel.
- Find the account whose Stories you want to mute, and press and hold on it for a couple of seconds.
- You should see this notice:
- Click ‘Mute.’ You’ll now have the option to mute the account’s Stories (and posts, if you’d like that).
- Boom you’re done.
There’s also another way of muting stories. Here’s how it works:
- Click on the account you want to mute.
- Click on the ‘Following’ button to open the drop-down menu.
- Head to the ‘Mute’ setting.
- Tick ‘Stories.’
All muted accounts will now show up at the end of the Stories carousel. In case you change your mind, you can press and hold on them to unmute them.
Alternatively, you can also unmute an account by following these steps:
- Open the account you’ve muted.
- Click on the ‘Following’ button to open the drop-down menu.
- Head to the ‘Mute’ menu.
- Untick the mute option for ‘Stories.’
There you go – you now have two ways to get rid of Story spammers on your Instagram feed.

Mute means to put something on silent. When it comes to online platforms, mute means to put on silence or turn off notifications. We all know how annoying app notifications can be at times.
Instagram mute isn’t limited to notifications. It is available as a different concept for posts and stories as well. There are three types of mutes on Instagram. One for messages, second for all push notifications, and the last one for stories and posts. While the first two involve notifications, the last one is used to filter the content.
Let us dive into these and see how they function.
Mute for Messages
For messages or Instagram Direct, mute has a different and obvious meaning — it lets you silence the incoming notifications. Suppose you are part of a group on Instagram whose members are always talking about things that are irrelevant to you. You will either leave the group or turn off message notifications completely on Instagram. However, you don’t need to take such a drastic step. This is where mute helps.
You can individually use it for contacts or group conversations whose notifications you want to disable. Instagram has a video chat feature as well, so it provides two separate options to mute messages and video chats. This feature isn’t available on the Instagram website as it lacks the message feature.
Here’s how to mute messages and video chats:
Step 1: Launch the Instagram app and tap on the Direct icon at the top-right corner.
Step 2: Tap on the conversation that you want to mute. Once in the conversation, tap their name at the top.
Step 3: You will find two options here — Mute Messages and Mute Video Chats. Turn on the toggle for the desired option. You can enable both of them as well.
Alternatively, tap and hold on the conversation thread in the message list and select Mute messages or Mute video chat from the menu. To unmute, repeat the steps and turn off mute.
Will You Get Messages If You Mute Notifications
Yes, the messages will arrive silently in your inbox. Since you won’t be notified about them, you will have to open the inbox to check them.
Can You Mute All Messages
Yes, if you don’t want to receive notifications for any conversation, you will have to turn off notifications for messages. To do so, navigate to Instagram settings and tap on Push Notifications. Scroll down and select Off in the Instagram Direct option.
When You Mute Someone’s Messages, Will They Know
No. Instagram won’t notify the other person that you’ve put them on mute.
Can You Provide Mute Duration
No. You cannot set a time to mute messages. However, if you are keen on doing so, you can use the Mute push notifications option as shown below.

Instagram is a social media application which allows you to share media with people you choose to follow your account. When you accept someone’s follows request, you allow them to access your account. When you follow someone and they tend to post very frequently which could be irritating for you.

This Instagram tutorial was prompted by a question from a friend asking me if you can stop seeing someone in your Instagram feed without unfollowing them. They were seeing a ton of updates in their feed from this one person but didn’t want to unfollow them because there would be the inevitable fallout from doing such a thing. So is there a solution?
Most of us have been in the same or similar situation on one social network or other. We friend someone and they turn into a prolific poster that fills up our timeline or feed. We otherwise like the person and don’t want to block or unfollow them as it would be noticed and then turn into a whole drama that nobody wants to have to contend with. So how can we manage situations like these?
Instagram apparently uses an algorithm that eventually quietens someone if you don’t interact with them for a while. Nobody quite knows how, or how effectively it works so you cannot depend on it to help you here. If you turn off notifications for the person and don’t interact with them in any way, in theory at least, you should see less of them over time.
If you’re setting up a new Instagram account the best thing is to make it private so you can manually control who gets to follow you and who doesn’t. If you have an existing account or the person you want to block was fine at first, you will need to try one of the following.
Stop seeing someone in your Instagram feed
You can sort of stop seeing someone in your Instagram feed but it takes a little effort. If you don’t want to block them you will have to manually mute their story in your feed each time one arrives. It isn’t ideal but is the only way I know of to stop their stories.
- Select one of their stories that you want to get rid of within your Instagram feed.
- Tap and hold the image until a menu appears.
- Select ‘Mute USERNAME’s story’.
This will only remove that individual story and you will have to repeat this for every one that comes up. Far from ideal but aside from using a third party app, this is the only way I know of controlling things.
Stop someone seeing your stories in their Instagram feed
If you don’t want to encourage the person to include you in their Instagram life story, you can elect to not have your own stories appear in their Instagram feed.
- Go to the person’s profile and select the three dot menu icon.
- Select Hide Your Story.
- Confirm if required.
This should stop your story appearing in that person’s feed. Like muting stories above, you would have to do this for each story you publish on the network.
The case for the block or unfollow
Somehow, social media has become so ingrained in our psyche that to be unfollowed is considered as serious as telling a real life friend that you never want to see them again. This could actually be a best friend but it could also be someone halfway across the country that you have never met and are never likely to.
Social media isn’t real life. It’s a pretend life where everyone tries desperately to make themselves seem cool and try to convince followers that their lives are much more interesting than they actually are.
While it has undoubtedly changed the way we live for the better, it has also skewed how we view relationships and the world around us. Rather than valuing our real friends, we count followers or retweets. Rather than spending time with those people that mean something to us, we sit beside them in a coffee shop in silence staring at our phones in our own little world. How is that a good way to maintain a relationship?
I would say that culling social media followers is a good thing. As long as you are as selective on your social network as you are likely to be in real life, it will benefit you massively. You will have more time for those who matter, have more energy to engage meaningfully with those you choose to and can use social media with the same kind of freedom it was initially envisaged to provide.
Spread yourself too thin and you don’t have enough value to give those who matter. Be selective with who you’re friends with on social media as well as in real life and you will have more time and energy for those people who are most likely to enrich your life.
I have culled all my social media accounts and feel so much better for it. Have you tried it? Would you try it? Tell us about your experience below!
