If you’ve done even some casual searching for digital comics online, you’ve certainly come across plenty of files with the .CBR and .CBZ file extensions. Let’s take a look at these ubiquitous comic formats, why they’re so popular, and how you can read them.

Special Archives for Special Stories

Since we’re talking about file types and not the stories contained within, here’s a spoiler alert: .CBZ and .CBR files are just .ZIP and .RAR files with their extensions modified. That’s it, not a single secret sneaky thing going on under the hood at all: just archive files with images inside.

But why rename perfectly serviceable and decades-old file formats?

The idea of using a special extension for comic books was popularized in the 1990s by David Ayton, creator of the very popular freeware application CDisplay. His program differentiated itself from the more general image viewers of the day by focusing on easily displaying comic book and manga pages cleanly and sequentially, a critical feature for reading image-driven stories.

By packaging comic books with this special extension, Ayton and everyone after him accomplished two things. Not only did the extension change make it readily apparent the file was a comic book, but it it also paved the way for comic-book centered apps like CDisplay to create file associations with the format. That way, when you double-clicked on one of the files, they would open not in the archive applications they were created in, but in the comic viewers designed to read them. That simple tweak completely changed the way we read comics on our computers and devices.

How to Create or Edit CBR and CBZ Files

Although CBR and CBZ are by far the most popular (which reflects the general popularity of the RAR and ZIP file formats), you’ll also, infrequently, come across the following related archive files. Comics with the extension .CB7 are .7z files, .CBA are .ACE files, and .CBT are .TAR files. The files inside the archives are generally images in JPEG or PNG format and, sometimes, lesser used formats like GIF, BMP, or TIFF.

Because comic book archives are simply renamed archive file types, you can use any archive tool that can handle the underlying format to manipulate them. This means that you can take a comic book file—say Amazing Super Comics #1.cbz—right click it, choose Open With, and open it with any application that handles .ZIP files.

Some apps, like the popular 7-Zip archive tool, recognize that a .CBZ file is just a .ZIP file and you don’t even have to rename it, while other apps require that you rename it from .CBZ to .ZIP or .CBR to .RAR first.

Either way, the files open just like any old archive container and you can take the contents out, rename them, manipulate them, and even put more files in.

With that in mind you can easily amend comic book files with whatever images you want, or even create your own comics. Let’s say, for example, that you found a web-published comic that you like or an artist who publishes a single page of their comic every few weeks on a personal blog. You could take those images and create a .CBZ file for easy reading on your PC or tablet.

We outline the process in detail in our guide to reading online comics offline, but the process is very straightforward. You just save the images, ensure they are numbered sequentially, stuff them in a .ZIP archive, and then save the archive with the extension changed to .CBZ.

The most strenous part of the whole process is the numbering, but even that can be automated. You can easily use a simple trick in Windows to bulk rename your files or, if you want some serious fine-tooth control over the process, you can use a dedicated renaming app like Bulk Rename Utility. The gold standard for numbering, by the way, is to use leading zero to number your files to ensure they work well across applications and operating systems—so if there are 100 pages in the comic, don’t use GreatWebComic1.jpg to GreatWebComic100.jpg, use GreatWebComic001.jpg to GreatWebComic100.jpg. Otherwise your comic reader will probably order them incorrectly.

The Best Apps for Storing, Organizing, and Reading Your Library of Comic Books

CDisplay is still around for Windows, and a great lightweight reader for CBR and CBZ files. But you could also opt for a more library-like management tool like the popular ComicRack. One of the most popular readers for macOS is SimpleComic, a snappy viewer that echos the clean simplicity of CDisplay. Linux users should definitely check out MComix, a long running project that builds on the robust, but no longer in development, Comix comic reader app.

Tablets and comics seem like natural companions, and there are plenty of great mobile comic readers too. Android users can grab a free copy of Astonishing Comic Reader, or the very popular ComicRack companion app for Android—the free version is a great standalone reader, while the $8 premium version syncs with ComicRack on Windows.

You can also find an iOS version of Comic Rack that includes a premium option with syncing. If you aren’t a ComicRack user, Comic Zeal ($5) is another premium product packed with features but even free options like ComicFlow still offer a polished user experience.

With a better understanding of how comic book file formats work, you’re in a much better position to fix hiccups when they arise, work with the files when you need to, and enjoy them with your reader of choice.

Read a lot of webcomics? No need to stay tied to a browser to catch up on the episodes you’ve missed. With this easy trick, read them on the go on your phone, PC or iPad, with or without internet.

Comic book reader programs like Comical for Windows make reading loads of comics easy—but why not use them for webcomics? With this simple process, you can turn most of your favorite webcomics into archives of comic book reader files, you can store on your PC, tablet, or mobile phone to read in comfort and style. Keep reading to see how easy it is!

Downloading Collections of Webcomic Images

Any webcomic with sequentially numbered images will work. To see if your favorite webcomic will work, we’ll have to look at how the images are numbered.

In Chrome, you can right click an image and select “Open image in new tab.” In Firefox, you can choose “View Image” under the same right click menu.

The image in question will load in a separate tab (or in Firefox, in the same one.)

Fortunately, this webcomic is numbered with numerical images, so we can quickly download them all. Here’s how to do it in a few short minutes.

Downloading Sequential Images with Pilfer

Available for Chrome and for Firefox, Pilfer is a tidy little add-on that’ll allow you to download sequentially numbered images. If you don’t already have it downloaded, you can get it from these links:

With Pilfer installed (you may have to restart your browser!), right click the image, choose Pilfer, and pick a range of numbers that should grab all the images you need. In this case, we’re only looking for episodes 1 – 100, so we pick 100.

Pilfer finds episodes 10 – 89 and builds this little HTML page displaying them all.

Right click on the PIlfer page, and choose “Save As.”

Make a new folder anywhere on your machine (in this case, on the Desktop) and title it appropriate to what you’re downloading (in this case, “Axecop”). Make certain you choose “Web Page, Complete” so that it downloads all the images as well.

Chrome will download ALL of the images in a sub folder inside the folder you made. They’ll be laid out neatly by number.

In the case of this comic, you’ll have to sometimes download some images by hand, or restart Pilfer for any images missed. In this case, stories 1 – 9 are all numbered differently, and have to be downloaded separately.

How To Make a Comic Book Reader File

Making a comic book reader file is easy. We start by making a RAR file of our Pilfered images. WinRAR is a simple solution for making RAR files on Windows. You can download it here.

With WinRAR installed, pick ALL of your sequential images with a quick Ctrl + A, then right click and pick “Add to “… .rar” to begin.

WinRAR does it’s magic in less than a minute, and creates the RAR file.

Right click and clean up your filename, and while you’re at it, change the file extension to CBR, for “Comic Book Reader.”

(Author’s Note: If you can’t view or change your file extensions, you’ll have to enable them. Follow this link here to see a simple how-to from Microsoft to enable it in Windows 7.)

You’ll get a warning about changing file extensions. Choose “Yes.”

And your RAR file is now a functioning Comic Book Reader file.

You can now read your bundle of webcomics offline and uninterrupted on your PC, or wherever you go with any good comic book reader program on your mobile phone or your iPad.

Comical for Windows is an excellent comic book reader for those of you just getting started. Lifehacker has done an excellent (and fun) write up on going digital with comics, and recommends many excellent readers for nearly every OS and gadget around, including iOS and Android devices. Happy comic reading!

In the previous post, I talked about the top 10 webcomics you should be reading. But trust me, there’s way more than 10 webcomics worth following. While not all of them are mainstream, comics that are aligned to your interest are usually just a Google search away.

When you start with 10 webcomics, you end up with 20, 30 easily. And let’s face it, you’re not going to open every website individually every morning. You’re probably not even going to read comics on your desktops. You’ve got an Android phablet, which is great for reading comics.

Today we’ll cover websites and apps that will make your webcomic reading experience a little bit easier. In the end we’ll talk about automating the entire webcomics delivery process using IFTTT.

1. Feedly RSS Reader

In the days of Google Reader, everyone used to read webcomics via RSS. It worked great. Every morning you’d get the comic strip in your Google Reader. No ads no unnecessary stuff. But then Google Reader shut down and webcomics kind of stopped supporting RSS because it’s hard for independent webcomic creators to support themselves via just RSS traffic.

So when you subscribe to RSS feed for Dilbert, you won’t find actual comic there. It’s just a link to the site.

But curiously enough, “Feedly (the true Google Reader successor) has a whole section dedicated to Comics. Here you can explore and subscribe to them. And when you’re using the website or the official Feedly app, or any third party client, the comics with full RSS support will show up in their full form. This is hit and miss really. Some webcomics like XKCD, Cyanide and Happiness support full RSS, while Penny Arcade and others don’t. I tried converting then to full RSS feed using a third party service, but it still didn’t work for me. Your mileage may vary.

2. Comic Rocket

Comic Rocket has a website. It’s basically a tracker for webcomics. You can follow webcomics and mark issues as read. This is great if you’re planning to binge read all 9000+ issues of Dilbert. Comic Reader, unlike RSS and other apps, doesn’t present just the image or the comic. When you start reading a comic, you’ll actually be taken to the original web page with a Comic Rocket wrapper around it.

But because you’re going directly to the website, you can count on a reliable experience. Comic Rocket has an “Archive Binge Read” feature where you can binge read old webcomics. It will send you 10 back issues via RSS everyday.

Comic Rocket’s collection is the most exhaustive. You’ll find almost every kind of comic here. The centralized approach to reading new issues and back catalogue of comics, along with the always in sync Android app, makes Comic Rocket a must have.

3. GoComics

GoComics is a website, and there’s also an iOS app. GoComics is where you’ll find most mainstream comic strips: Dilbert, Garfield, Penguin, Calvin and Hobbs and the like. After logging in, you can follow comics of your interest. You can also zoom in and pan around to read better. Swiping left/right will bring up older/newer issues.

You won’t find nearly as many comics in GoComics as Comic Rocket, but if you’re a comic strips fan, you’ll get a lot out of it.

4. Download Webcomics for Offline Use

Webcomics like The Oatmeal or Hyperbole and a Half usually run in multiple pages. Reading them takes a lot longer than just a comic strip. And you might not want to read them all when you’re on the desk. If you want to save them for offline use later, try downloading them as PDF. Use the “Save as PDF” extension. Just click the icon and the entire page will be converted to PDF, and the download will start automatically.

You can also save them as images. Batch download images using Image Downloader Chrome extension.

5. Getting Alerts from IFTTT and Pushbullet

If you’re using the IFTTT app on your Android or iOS device, you can set up a recipe to follow updates from your favorite webcomic. Choose the “Feed” trigger, paste in the RSS feed and then select Android or iOS notification. You can also select Pushbullet so you can be alerted on the desktop. This is an example recipe I created to notify me about new comics from Cyanide and Happiness. IFTTT is great because it’s flexible. You can set up a system where new items from XKCD or Dilbert show up directly in your Inbox as well.

Speaking of Pushbullet, you can directly subscribe to webcomics channels there. Only a handful of comics are available – The Oatmeal, XKCD, Cyanide and Happiness, Loading Artist and SMBC.

Comic books are the reason behind the popular super hero characters in the movies. Even though Marvel and DC takes a major share of the market – there are a lot of other comics available to read. Sure, you can go ahead and grab a comic book from the store. But, what if you could enjoy reading the comics online for free?

There are a lot of websites that let you read comics online for free. So, in this article, we shall take a look at some of the best sites where you can read a comic book issue for free. Also, if you are searching for a Manga, we have a list of best manga apps available for Android.

Note: We made sure that none of the websites mentioned below would affect the work of a content creator. They are all legit.

11 Websites Where You Can Read Comics Online for Free

These websites will let you read digital copies of popular and unique comic books for free.

1. Marvel’s Official Site

Personally, I am a Marvel fan. Even though I’m not a comic geek – we can safely say that they make some of the most popular comic books. Without a doubt, right?

You can either opt to purchase the comic book issues on their site individually or get a subscription to have unlimited access to all the Marvel comic books available online. But, here, we are talking about the free ones. Don’t worry, Marvel also offers free issues which you can read without registering/subscribing.

A total of 50 free issues are available as of yet. If you are into Marvel movies or comics, this could be the best digital space for you.

2. DC Kids

We are well-aware that DC is now catching up with good movies (when compared to its comic counterparts). Yes, just like Marvel, DC offers incredibly awesome comics to read. In this case, you actually get two options to read DC comics from.

DC Kids is one for the kids and Read DC is for the grown ups which we will talk about in the later section of this article.

3. Read DC

Read DC is actually the spot for digital DC comics. You can opt to purchase or simply get the free issues available. Do note that you need to create an account or use your comiXology account – if you have one.

Of course, the free issues will not be charged – but you need to have an account to add it to your cart and purchase it for free.

4. ComiXology

ComiXology is a digital comics distribution platform. Fret not, it is an Amazon company (in case you have trust issues). Similar to Marvel or DC’s official site you get the option to subscribe or purchase individual comics.

In addition to that, you also to get to read comics online for free. It offers a variety of comics to read for free. It is worth checking out.

5. DriveThruComics

If you are searching for a variety of comics – excluding Marvel/DC. This is a good spot to look for. You will notice a lot of comics in different languages available for free. Only a comic book nerd will know what to look for among the available collections.

Yes, it features an extensive list of comics. So, do not go away because of the old school UI of the website – you just have to keep digging to find some of the gems. If something is not available for free, you get to pay what you want. So, it is an incredibly cheap alternative to purchase legit comics.

6. Amazon Kindle Store

When it comes to reading a digital copy, how can one forget Amazon’s Kindle store for digital books and comics (or manga) as well. It features hundreds of comics to choose from. If you do not want to pay for it – you always have the option to browse the catalogue for free offerings. You will get a lot of good comics for free – you should check them out if you don’t believe my word.

7. Digital Comic Museum

The classic comic book issues can be found here. If you head over to a retail store (or an auction of some kind) – you will find the classic comic books selling for crazy-high price tags. Of course, that depends on the market and the buyers available. But, here, you get to read some of the greatest comics online absolutely for free.

You will have to create an account and log in to download/read the comics. Expect the classics only – you will not find any latest comic book issues here.

8. Comic Book Plus

You will definitely notice some interesting options when you visit their homepage. Even though I’m not personally a fan of classic comics – you will be able to find plenty of good issues to read.

9. GoComics

GoComics features a different set of collection which you can enjoy reading for free. You can read the comic issues for free but you will encounter advertisements. So, you can upgrade to the premium subscription plan where you get rid of the ads along with some other special benefits.

Fret not, if you are not sure whether to pay for the service or not – you can always opt for the 30-days trial available.

10. Dark Horse Free Pages

Similar to how Marvel and DC offer some of the latest issues for free, other comic book publishers also tend to offer a couple of good comics for free. Dark Horse is just one of them. It includes some of the latest popular issues like Overwatch, Elf Quest, and so on. The free collection is not huge but worth taking a look at.

11. The Internet Archive

The Internet Archive is not a commericial space to search for popular comics for free. Instead, you will find some of the long forgotten (or collectible) comic issues. It also includes mangas – if you are into that. You have got a lot of digging to do if you decide to browse the archive for digital comics.

Wrapping Up

For obvious reasons, you cannot get access to all the latest digital comics for free. But, you will not be dissapointed either when browsing the collection these websites offer. We could have missed one of your favorite websites where you regularly find free digital comic book copies for free. In either case, by now, you must have found out your favorite destination for reading comics online.

Let us know what you think in the comments below.

I’ve been reading more digital comics and web-comics lately, and am curious as to what others prefer in a reading-experience/content-layout based.

For digital comics (e.g. digital versions of the physical product), I’m perfectly happy with a PDF or JPG-per-page that I may have to zoom in on or scroll vertically, as long as I can rotate my phone to landscape and it extends to the full width. I’m perfectly happy scrolling back up and down if needed.

I actually don’t like the “frame-by-frame” reading experience – it doesn’t always translate well and I feel like I loose some context compared to when viewing the full page (and I get confused switching back and forth between full page and frame view, so usually just keep the full view on).

TBH – I haven’t tried any apps, so not sure if there’s a different presentation there.

For web comics that are designed for the web, it looks like there are two types:
1) Newspaper style – just a few frames so you can read it all at once. No need for zoom, pagination, etc.
2) Long vertical pages: Each page contain several different content sections which result in a long, continuous vertical scroll (like web-born manwha).

I guess the there’s less ‘reading’ preference on web-comics, since it’s really designed to fit the type of comic the author/illustrator wants to create.

Anyone have any preferences they’d like to share?

Comic books have been around for a long time. It’s responsible for some of the most magical and amazing stories told in the last century. Everybody knows who Superman and Spider-Man are. The movies have done great at the box office as well. As a result, people are reading more comic books. The good news is that you can read them on mobile. In fact, with how big Marvel has been over the last decade, this is actually a rather crowded market these days. That means you have plenty of options. We can help with that! Here are the best comic book apps and comic book readers for Android!

If I trained in accordance with my quests and hunted monsters, my level would rise. Changing from the weakest Hunter to the strongest S-rank Hunter! (Source: Kakao, translated)

This week, io9 is hosting a week of posts about the science of sex, starting off with a post that focuses more on the sexy stuff than the science. We’ve rounded up eight of the steamiest and raunchiest webcomics this side of a paywall. Enjoy them when you have a little time to yourself.

All links are, as you might expect, NSFW.

We’ve highlighted most of these webcomics in the past, but we’re gathering them here for your pornographic reading convenience. Feel free to share any of your favorite sexy webcomics in comments.

Here we’re only looking for sexy webcomics that don’t require a credit card. If you don’t mind paying for your illustrated sex, you can always head on over to Slipshine or Filthy Figments , which host popular porny webcomics.

Oglaf : If you’re going to read one webcomic on this list, it should be Oglaf. Trudy Cooper’s delightfully demented brain comes up with endlessly creative sexual spins on the fantasy genre, from the enchanted semen that runs and tattles on the poor sorceress’s apprentice whenever he masturbates to the ice queen who can’t be…ahem…conquered because of her frosty interior.

This 75-Inch 4K Toshiba TV has M550 backlights for excellent control of light and dark on the screen, features 4K resolution, Dolby Vision HDR and HDR10+, and can be controlled using Alexa for a more futuristic and fancy feel.

Chester 5000 XYV : Perhaps the sweetest bit of sleaze on this whole list is Jess Fink’s Chester 5000 XYV. When he can’t keep up with his wife’s voracious libido, a young Victorian inventor builds his bride a dashing sexbot. But Chester turns out to be much more than a plaything; through his technologically enhanced romps with the lady of the house, the two fall very much in love.

Curvy : When Anaïs finds herself face to licorice-flavored nethers with the Candy World princess Fauna, she embarks on a journey across the various theme worlds of the multiverse. On the run from Fauna’s fiancé and a very confused government agent, Anaïs leaves her native Boring World and finds herself meeting (and sometimes bedding) a host of interesting people: Fauna’s peppermint-tentacled maid on Candy World, a transgendered, transspecies merperson on Pirate World, uber-capitalists on Corporate World, and a genderqueer Invisible Person in Super City.

Dr. Voluptua : Dr. Voluptua is a therapist — a sex therapist, to be precise. And her patients have some rather unusual problems — such as singing penises, libidinous split personalities, and bandito ghost possessions. Fortunately, she has an equally bizarre arsenal of treatments: perpetually naked colleges, Ken doll security guards who reproduce by cell division, anthropomorphic genitalia, and hat-wearing puppy hypnotists. It’s all in the name of helping her patients have functional, if non-traditional, sex lives.

SS Myra : Upon her death, the hedonistic millionairess Myra had her consciousness uploaded into her pleasure spaceship, figuring she’d spend the rest of time partying it up with fellow lovers of vice. What she ends up with a sweet newlywed couple who actually waited until their wedding night to get naked beneath the sheets. Myra is determined to introduce her new occupants to the libertine lifestyle — even if it kills them.

Starfighter : Adding a little guy-on-guy love to the mix is the sex-filled yaoi webcomic Starfighter. Abel has defied his family’s expectations by joining up with the Navigators to battle a distant threat. He’s paired up with a Fighter, Cain (they’re code names, not a terrible coincidence), who’s pushy, violent, and, Abel finds, quite charming. And the truth is, Abel joined the military for two reasons, and one of them has nothing to do with fighting a war.

Cura Te Ipsum : Normally, Cura Te Ipsum isn’t a particularly porny webcomic. In fact, back when we first highlighted Neal Bailey’s multiversal tale of a depressed school counselor who is saved from suicide by himself, it was solidly safe for work. But a recent trek through the alternate universes of the alternate Charlies Everett lands the interdimensional suicide support group in a universe where procreation is so difficult that the entire culture revolves around sex. Seriously, even the police spend all of their time naked (except for the hats and gun holsters). And apparently, only people with the gene for enormous breasts are able to successfully breed.

Sexy Losers/The Thin H Line : Hard’s on-again-off-again raunchy webcomic is not for the faint of heart — or weak of stomach. Sexy Losers explores the lighter side of every sexual taboo — from incest to necrophilia — and although most of the entries don’t fall under speculative fiction, a few do. There’s the Sex Toy Fairy, who brings that faithful old vibrator to life (the sex toys, incidentally, aren’t particularly grateful), and Scientific Erotican , delivering the latest innovations in sexual science. Just remember, nothing in this comic can be unseen.

Edit: Wow, a lot of people showing love for Teahouse . I can’t personally vouch for it (and I’m not actually sure what genre it is — I left non-genre sexy comics off the list), but your fellow readers are clamoring for it, so there it is.
