Now download the BIOS update tools for flashing your graphics card VBIOS. For Nvidia graphics card you have to download NVFlash and for AMD graphics card you have to download ATIFlash to update your VBIOS.

3. Backup & Update your GPU BIOS

Now make a backup of your current VBIOS using these GPU BIOS Update tools because if anything goes wrong with the new VBIOS then you can safely roll back to your older VBIOS. You can also create a backup of your current GPU BIOS using GPU-Z. After backing up your current BIOS you can now flash your BIOS to the newer one by executing the following commands.

For Nvidia Graphics Cards [NVFlash]

For AMD Graphics Cards [ATIFlash]

4. Test the New BIOS

After successfully updating the BIOS or Firmware of your graphics card, you can test it by overclocking and by playing games to see if everything is working normally or not. If you encounter stability issues or an unexpected rise in graphics card temperature then you should roll back to your older VBIOS that you have saved earlier in step 3.

I recently tried changing the driver for my Asus Radeon HD 7870 to the proprietary one (a friend told me it was much faster), however that seems to have killed my install of Ubuntu. Now whenever I boot up it shows me GRUB, I select Ubuntu, and then it boots up for a second or two and then blackscreens. I think the blackscreen is caused by it reaching the login screen, as it is also at that point that I can SSH into it.

So can anyone tell me how to switch back to the open source driver?

Edit: And I’ll add, when I boot Ubuntu off of a USB, everything works fine.

Edit: Ok here my process is for the driver.

  1. Install Radeon HD 7870 in my system
  2. Boot up, everything is working fine automatically
  3. I go and check and it is using the open source driver (I checked by going into the Software and Updates program and going to the driver tab)
  4. A friend recommends I switch to the propietary one as it is faster (I believe it was something along the lines of flgrx-updates)
  5. I go into the Software and Updates program, and navigate to the drivers tab. From there I selected the flgrx-updates one and hit ok.
  6. I reboot my system, and then it won’t work. After some basic troubleshooting, I come here.

Update: Thanks to gertvdijk I have managed to disable the propietary driver, but Ubuntu still will not beat up. I’m guessing that for whatever reason the open source driver has not been automatically enabled. Anyone have any ideas? Are there any system logs I can give you guys to help find the problem?

  1. – Open the Control Panel window and double-click Device Manager
  2. – Double-click Display Adapters to view all devices under it
  3. – Double-click the device that is causing the problem
  4. – Click the Driver tab
  5. – Click the Roll Back Driver button and follow the onscreen instructions

As many Windows users learned the hard way, drivers are sometimes wreaking havoc on devices powered by Microsoft’s operating system, often even blocking the computer from booting.

If a specific driver is broken and Windows is unable to load it, the OS could end up experiencing a fatal crash, or Blue Screen of Death, before it gets to the desktop.

If this happens, it goes without saying that your options are very limited, as uninstalling the driver isn’t necessarily the most straightforward thing to do without access to Windows.

Fortunately, it’s possible to do this from the Windows Recovery Environment, which was specifically developed to help you deal with problems that prevent the OS from booting. Microsoft provides an accurate description of WinRE’s purpose:

“Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) is a recovery environment that can repair common causes of unbootable operating systems. WinRE is based on Windows Preinstallation Environment (Windows PE), and can be customized with additional drivers, languages, Windows PE Optional Components, and other troubleshooting and diagnostic tools. By default, WinRE is preloaded into the Windows 10 for desktop editions (Home, Pro, Enterprise, and Education) and Windows Server 2016 installations.”

There are several ways to access WinRE, but in case your computer doesn’t boot, turning to recovery media is the only method. If you can log in to the desktop, there’s a shortcut that allows you to reboot the system to WinRE:

Start > Settings > Update & security > Recovery > Advanced Startup > Restart now
Next, you need to open the Command Prompt to be able to remove the faulty driver. The Command Prompt allows you to obtain full information about the drivers running on your device using the following command:
Dism /image:C:\ /Get-Drivers
If Windows is installed on a drive other than C:, make sure you change the aforementioned command accordingly.

At this point, you should be provided with a comprehensive list of drivers on your computer, and the line that you’re interested in is called Published Name. Third-party drivers are named using an oemX.inf rule, where X is a number that starts with 0 and increases as more drivers are detected on the device.

Once you determine which driver must be removed, type the following command to uninstall it:

DISM /Image:C:\ /Remove-Driver /Driver:oemX.inf
Again, change the drive letter and the driver file accordingly.

If you do this correctly, you should see the following message in Command Prompt:

Found 1 driver package (s) to remove.
Removing 1 of 1 – oemX.inf: The driver package was successfully removed.
The operation completed successfully.
At this point, you can very well reboot the computer and check if Windows starts correctly without the faulty driver.

If you’re wondering how you can determine which driver is causing the booting issues on your Windows device, there’s no generic answer to this dilemma. In most of the cases, the drivers that have only recently been updated are the culprit, so you should begin by removing the ones that were installed or updated before restarting or shutting down the device.

The method described here doesn’t work when you’re running Windows, as this is considered an online instance of the operating system and needs to be specifically used in the Windows Recovery Environment. The same steps can be used to fix driver issues preventing the device from booting in previous Windows versions as well, including both Windows 7 and Windows 8.1. All Windows 10 versions are supported, including the upcoming version 2004 due in the spring.

Option 1: Backup Your System Using System Restore

System Restore works a lot like the Undo command in Microsoft Word. You can use System Restore to return to your previous driver version if you create a restore point prior to installing the driver. System Restore does not affect your personal data files (such as Microsoft Word documents, browsing history, drawings, favorites, or email) so you won’t lose changes made to these files after the restore point is created.

Windows XP steps to create a restore point (before installing the new driver):

  1. Click Start
  2. Point to All Programs
  3. Point to Accessories
  4. Point to System Tools
  5. Click System Restore
  6. Click Create a restore point, and then click Next
  7. Type a name to identify this restore point and click Create

To return to this restore point, from the same System Restore Wizard select Restore my computer to an earlier time. Then select the date you created the restore point from the calendar in the Select a Restore Point screen. All of the restore points you created and you computer created on the selected date are listed by name in the list box to the right of the calendar.

Windows Vista or Windows 7 steps to create a restore point (before installing the new driver):

  1. Click Start
  2. Click Control Panel
  3. Windows Vista: Click System and Maintenance and then System or simply System (in Classic view). Windows 7: Click System and Security and then System.
  4. In the left pane, click System Protection
  5. On the System Protection tab, Click Create
  6. Type a name to identify this restore point and click Create

To return to this restore point, select System Restore on the same System Protection tab as above. Next select Choose a different restore point and click Next. Then select the date and name of the restore point that you created and click Next. Finally select Finish.

Option 2: Roll Back To Your Previous Driver

If you install the newer driver without first uninstalling the previous version, you may be able to simply roll back your driver to the previous version using these steps:

Windows XP steps to roll back your driver:

  1. Click Start
  2. Click Control Panel
  3. Click Performance and Maintenance and then System (in Category view) or System (in Classic view)
  4. Select the Hardware Tab
  5. Click Device Manager
  6. Double-click on Display Adapters
  7. Double-click on your NVIDIA GPU
  8. Select the Driver Tab
  9. Click on Roll Back Driver

Windows Vista or Windows 7 steps to roll back your driver:

  1. Click Start
  2. Click Control Panel
  3. Windows Vista: Click System and Maintenance and then System or simply System (in Classic view). Windows 7: Click System and Security and then System.
  4. In the left pane, click Device Manager
  5. Double-click on Display Adapters
  6. Double-click on your NVIDIA GPU
  7. Select the Driver Tab
  8. Click on Roll Back Driver

Sometimes, a Windows computer may become incredibly sluggish during use, followed by the computer’s screen going off and then turning back on again, at which point an error message stating that the “Display driver stopped responding and has recovered” can be seen in the Notification Area in the bottom-right corner of the screen. This happens when a feature known as Timeout Detection and Recovery (TDR) determines that the GPU has not responded within the allotted period of time and restarts the display drivers in order to save the user the trouble of restarting the computer entirely.

Some of the most common causes of the “Display driver stopped responding and has recovered” error message are a lot of programs and applications running and stressing the GPU, a problem with the affected computer’s display drivers and an overheating GPU. This issue is known to affect all versions of the Windows Operating System from Windows XP to Windows 10. If you happen to see the “Display driver stopped responding and has recovered” error message once in a blue moon, there is no cause for alarm. However, if you start seeing the “Display driver stopped responding and has recovered” error message pretty often, there might be a pretty serious underlying issue.

Thankfully, though, the “Display driver stopped responding and has recovered” error message can be fixed as long as it is not caused by a defective GPU. If you want to solve this problem, the following are the most effective solutions that you should try:

Solution 1: Uninstall and then reinstall your graphics drivers

Press the Windows Logo key + R to launch a Run

Type devmgmt.msc into the Run dialog and press Enter to launch the Device Manager.

In the Device Manager, expand the Display adapters

Right-click on your graphics drivers, click on Uninstall and then go through the uninstallation wizard to uninstall the drivers. If you have more than one graphics driver, do the same for every one of them.

Restart your computer. Once your computer boots up, it should automatically reinstall the same version of the graphics drivers. However, if the computer doesn’t do so, simply log on to the official website of your GPU’s manufacturer and locate, download and install them yourself. Solution 2: Update your graphics drivers

If a newer version of the graphics drivers on your computer is available for your computer, downloading and installing them may just be able to fix this problem for you. To check to see if a newer version of your computer’s graphics drivers is available, log on to the official website of your GPU’s manufacturer, head on to the Downloads or Support section and see if a newer version of graphics drivers for your specific GPU is available. If such a version is available, download and install it, and then check to see if that fixes the problem.

Solution 3: Increase the TDR timeout for your GPU

TDR (Timeout Detection and Recovery) has a set time period at the end of which, if a Windows computer’s GPU does not respond, the feature reboots the display drivers, at which point the “Display driver stopped responding and has recovered” error message is displayed. If you are seeing the error message quite often, a pretty plausible cause may be that TDR’s set timeout is just too little for your GPU to respond in time, which is why the display driver reboot is triggered over and over again.

If this is the case, you can resolve this issue by simply increasing the TDR timeout for your GPU, which can be done by editing your computer’s registry. Although the process is pretty simple, be sure to take extra caution when tinkering around with your computer’s registry. To use this solution to try and fix this problem, you need to:

Press the Windows Logo key + R to launch a Run

Type regedit into the Run dialog and press Enter to launch the Registry Editor.

In the left pane of the Registry Editor, navigate to the following directory:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SYSTEM > CurrentControlSet > Control

Click on GraphicsDrivers in the left pane to have its contents displayed in the right pane.

In the right pane, right-click on an empty space and hover over New to expand the context menu. If you are using a 32-bit version of Windows, click on DWORD (32-bit) Value in the context menu. If you are using a 64-bit version of Windows, click on QWORD (64-bit) Value in the context menu.

Name the new registry value TdrDelay and press Enter.

Double-click on the TdrDelay registry value to modify it, type 8 into its Value data field and click on OK.

Close the Registry Editor, restart your PC and check to see whether or not the problem still persists once it boots up.

Solution 4: Relieve some of the stress on the GPU

A Windows computer’s graphics driver may reboot and cause the “Display driver stopped responding and has recovered” error message to be displayed when more applications and programs than the GPU can handle are running. If that is the case, simply relieve some of the stress on your GPU by closing a few unnecessary applications and programs that are open, and that should do the trick.

Solution 5: Manually clean dust and other impurities off the GPU

An overheating GPU can also prove to be a cause of this issue, and one of the most common reasons why GPUs overheat is because of dust and other impurities on them (and especially on their radiators and heat sinks). To rule this possible cause out, simply shut your computer down, open your computer up, unseat your GPU, thoroughly clean it, its radiator, its heat sinks and its port in your computer’s motherboard, reseat the GPU, restart your computer and check to see if that fixed the issue once the computer boots up.

Did your graphics card die? Computer turns on but there is no picture? Or after a while of gaming blue-screen appears? And this all happens few weeks after the warranty runs out? If the symptoms leads to a failure in graphics follow this guide.

This method works with every graphics card. Even with laptops.( i will make another instructable about fixing a laptop in the oven very soon!)

There is an easy way to save a lots of money by fixing the problem by your self!

Remember to attempt this fix in good ventilated area. The solder fumes aren’t something to smell for fun!

For this easy fix you will need:

In these four simple steps you could have a working graphics card!

If possible do this in ESD protected area. ie. ground your self to something that has true ground.

Remember that if the graphics card is broken, you don’t have anything to lose!

Step 1: Disassembly

Remove the heat sink from the graphics card.

Nothing special. Unscrew the screws from the bottom so the heat sink drops off.

Remember to remove the fans power cable.

In this case the faulty component is the big grey slap in the middle of the card. This is the graphics processor and under it is hundreds of tiny solder points. Some of this points are broken due to a heat caused by a bad heat dissipation what is mainly caused by a poor and dry thermal paste or a fan full of dust. Or both.

To fix this bad solder the main chip must be heated to a point the solder melts and rejoins the own solder point.

Step 2: Cleaning

Clean the old and dry thermal paste whit rubbing alcohol OR borrow your special ones nail polish removal.

Use a cotton swab and cotton cloth if possible. Toilet paper works fine too.

Clean the chip until the markings are clear from the thermal paste.

Also clean the heat sink.

Step 3: Heating

This is the critical part of the fix. How to heat the chip so it won’t burn?

The chip must heat up to almost 200*C but not over it. Simple thing is to put the whole chip in to oven for 10 minutes at 200*C but with the heat gun you cant see the temperature on the chip.

Start heating the graphics chip whit the heat gun. Do not point it just on the main chip or it will burn. Make a slow rotary motion over the chip with the heat gun from about 10 cm over the card.

If you have lots of soldering experience, you know what a solder smells like when the solder melts. And for those who aren’t familiar with soldering, the smell is like a burned glue and metal. The burned “glue” smell comes from the flux in the solder.

While heating the chip keep an nose on these smells and look if somewhere is liquid solder. This is the point when the heat is enough to fix the chip. Do not heat over this point or the chip will burn.

After these smells (hehe) let the chip cool for a while. DO NOT TOUCH the chip until it is completely cooled or the chip will move because the solder is liquid and it wont work. EVER!

This is the part where you will need patience. Rush in this and forget the idea about working card.

Step 4: New Thermal Paste and Assembly

It’s time to apply a new thermal paste and assembly the heat sink.

The thermal paste i used was nexus TMP-1000 witch is cheap and easy to find paste. The paste is silver based so it will conduct heat really good. Also it wont dry out easily. The factory paste can dry completely in about a few months after applying but this won’t. I once had this paste in heavy duty overclock PC for a year and it was still in liquid form. The paste is not the ultimate best in the market but it does it job very well.

Apply a small ball of the paste in the middle of the main chip. Use the right amount of the paste or it wont dispense heat properly. Too much paste does the same effect than a too little paste.

For the right amount of the paste is easy to apply. You can make a thin film from the paste all over the chip OR do it like i do. Put a small ball about a size of 3-5 mm in diameter in the center of the chip and press down the heat sink on to it. The paste will make a large circle in between the chip and the heat sink and it will spread evenly.

Assembling the heat sink is just the opposite of the earlier step.

Step 5: Testing

This graphics card is my friends old card that wasn’t working after overheating. So i had to test the card in my own test bench. In the first picture you can see the fixed card on the table and my own card in the PC case.

In the next picture i have removed my own card and put the fixed card in to the case.

REMEMBER to remove the power cable from the PC BEFORE removing anything. AND use ESD protection to prevent static shock to the fragile parts of electronics.

In the last picture the fixed (and working. Wohooo!) graphics card is in the PC case and my own graphics card is on the table in front of the screen.

Install all the drivers on to the PC if needed and test it with Furmark or heaven benchmark to see that it functions properly and the heat is at normal levels.

Both of these are free and made for testing graphics to the limit!

Corrupt drivers are the source of errors and issues of your system especially the infamous Blue Screen of Death of BSOD. Every hardware installed on your system needs a driver to run and perform its relative functions properly. Bad drivers lead to instability and poor performance. And the blue screen errors are so common and this may cause due to faulty and outdated drivers.

In this article, I’ll guide you through checking of bad drivers in your Windows system to avoid performance bumps and sudden errors.

Windows Driver Verifier Utility

Driver Verifier helps you in verifying all your device drivers and will let you know if any bad or corrupt driver is present.

But the thing is to use Driver Verifier, you have to be careful as it can lock out of you from your system. So before using or running Driver Verifier, be sure that you have a System Restore or Backup of all of your data. And if anything bad happens you can easily go to Safe Mode before going to main Windows.

Let’s start with Driver Verifier

  1. Open Command Prompt window and type “verifier” in CMD. After running the command, a new pop-up window of Driver Verifier Manager will appear. Select “Create Custom Settings”. and click Next.
  2. Then a list of tests will be shown to you. You can run all tests for your drivers, just uncheck the two tests which are “DDI Compliance Checking (additional)” and “Randomized low resources simulation”. Click on Next button.
  3. The next settings will remain as it is. Go for next window.
  4. Select “Select driver names from a list”.
  5. It will start loading the driver information.
  6. A list will appear. If you don’t know exactly about the faulty driver, then check all drivers except Microsoft drivers because those drivers aren’t the corrupted one. And if you know about the specific corrupt driver, select it to run the Driver Verifier for it.
  7. Now after clicking on Finish, your system will restart. And next, it will start, Driver Verifier is activated. You can use your system normally. If any error is found or blue screen will appear, note down the error and cause of it, as it is tested by Driver Verifier which you have activated.

Exit Driver Verifier

In any case, you do not want to use Driver Verifier, deactivate it easily by going to below steps.

  1. To exit the Driver Verifier open CMD window and type the following command.
    “verifier /bootmode resetonbootfail”.
  2. After running the above command, restart your system once to apply the changes properly.

Using Driver Agent

DriverAgent is a third-party tool which can easily tell you that which drivers of your system are good and bad. And for bad drivers, if any update is available, you can easily update via Driver Agent tool. Apply below easy steps to check inoperative drivers of the system.

  1. Download Driver Agent from below link.
  2. Run the installer and proceed with on-screen instructions to complete the installation.
  3. After installation, Driver Agent will locate all drivers of a system, and open the list in the browser. Drivers with green sign indicate good and updated drivers, and with the red sign, indicates that these drivers need to be updated.
  4. You can update the outdated driver directly staying in the same window easily by clicking on Update button showing in front of a corrupted or outdated driver.

Try doing a “system restore” that could take about 15 minutes.Windows will attempt to repair with the spinning dots showing. Then click CTRL, ALT,DEL same time and once the Windows logo comes up , press F8.

I am having intermittent hangs on Win10 startup with “Page fault in non-paged area”. I have totally ruled out any hardware issue as I have a second identical machine which I put a cloned drive into.

The BIG problem now is I enabled Verifier and selected all tests except the ones noted and restarted but the boot up won’t get by the blue windows logo, i,.e not spinning dots. How to I turn off Verifier now that I can’t boot to the system or even the recovery environment! IOW, I’ve gone from a recovery environment loop with an occasional full boot to a solid hang with a blue window with 4 panes stuck on my screen. Help, please!

In all, Nvidia patched flaws tied to 16 CVEs across its graphics drivers and vGPU software, in its first security update of 2021.

Nvidia, which makes gaming-friendly graphics processing units (GPUs), on Thursday fixed a slew of high-severity flaws affecting its graphics driver. The vulnerabilities allow bad actors to cripple systems with denial of service attacks, escalate privileges, tamper with data or sniff out sensitive data.

Affected is Nvidia’s graphics driver (formally known as the GPU Display Driver) for Windows. The graphics driver is used in devices targeted to enthusiast gamers; it’s the software component that enables the device’s operating system and programs to use its high-level, gaming-optimized graphics hardware.

Nvidia’s Thursday security update addresses flaws tied to 16 CVEs overall. The most severe of these (CVE‑2021‑1051) is an issue in the graphic drivers’ kernel mode layer. This flaw ranks 8.4 out of 10 on the CVSS scale, making it high severity.

Kernel mode is generally reserved for the lowest-level, most trusted functions of the operating system; in this case, the layer (nvlddmkm.sys) handler for the DxgkDdiEscape interface contains a glitch where an operation is performed that could be abused to launch a denial-of-service (DoS) attack or escalate privileges.

Another high-severity flaw (CVE‑2021‑1052) in this same kernel mode layer (nvlddmkm.sys) handler for DxgkDdiEscape could allow user-mode clients to access legacy privileged application programming interfaces (APIs). According to Nvidia, this “may lead to denial of service, escalation of privileges, and information disclosure.”

Nvidia also stomped out four medium-severity flaws in its graphics driver. Three of these (CVE‑2021‑1053, CVE‑2021‑1054, CVE‑2021‑1055) also stem from the kernel mode layer (nvlddmkm.sys) handler for DxgkDdiEscape, while the fourth (CVE‑2021‑1056) exists in a kernel mode layer (nvidia.ko) that does not completely honor operating system file system permissions to provide GPU device-level isolation. That could allow for DoS or information disclosure.

Beyond its graphics drivers, Nvidia warned of flaws tied to nine high-severity CVEs in its virtual GPU (vGPU) software. Nvidia’s vGPU creates graphics-forcused virtual desktops and workstations in tandem with the company’s data center Tesla accelerator GPUs.

vGPU Software Flaws

Many of the flaws addressed in Nvidia’s Thursday security advisory stem from Nvidia’s vGPU manager, its tool that enables multiple virtual machines to have simultaneous, direct access to a single physical GPU, while also using Nvidia graphics drivers deployed on non-virtualized operating systems.

One high-severity flaw in exists in a plugin within the vGPU manager (CVE‑2021‑1057). This issue could allow guests to allocate some resources for which they are not authorized – which according to Nvidia could lead to data integrity and confidentiality loss, DoS and information disclosure. The vGPU manager also contains a flaw in the vGPU plugin (CVE‑2021‑1059), in which an input index is not validated, which could lead to integer overflow. A race condition (CVE‑2021‑1061) in the vGPU plugin of the vGPU manager could essentially trick it into using a previously validated resource that has since changed, which may lead to DoS or information disclosure.

And, in another Nvidia vGPU plugin issue (CVE‑2021‑1065), input data is not validated, which may lead to tampering of data or DoS.

Various Nvidia GeForce Windows and Linux driver branches are affected; Nvidia has released a full list of affected versions and updated driver versions on its security advisory. The graphics chip manufacturer has likewise released fixes for specific versions of the vGPU software affected by these flaws on its website.

The security advisory is Nvidia’s first in 2021. Last year, the company issued its fair share of patches; including fixes for two high-severity flaws in the Windows version of its GeForce Experience software, and a patch for a critical bug in its high-performance line of DGX servers, both in October; and a high-severity flaw in its GeForce NOW application software for Windows in November.

I have palit (dual fan) gtx 1060 6gb and i flashed it with a bios for Palit (jetstream) gtx 1060 6b, and the display started acting up, flickering and stuff and then i restarted the PC and now the card doesn’t post (i write this using iGPU). I reflashed back to correct bios that i found on techpowerup.com but still not problem solved.

Edit: ok, the problem was old bios from 2016 (not compatible with new nvidia drivers and windows 10), i reflashed a new bios from 2018 (unverified from techpowerup) and now gpu works again.

So guess what? You get a ton of files inside the actual driver installation directory that are completely useless!

The impact: 4.4 GB

In this example I haveВ 4445 MB of useless files collecting dust in the Installer2 folder.

Removal instructions

To remove these files and save disk space simply navigate to:

C:\Program Files\NVIDIA Corporation\Installer2

Now delete all folders insideВ this folder. Do not delete the Installer2 folder itself.

Disclaimer: Removing these files means you can no longer uninstall the Geforce Experience regularly. However, do not worry. If you ever need to uninstall Geforce Experience simply download the latest geforce experience setup and re-install the latest version. Hereafter you can uninstall the Geforce Experience as if nothing happened.

The final location is not something Nvidia can be blamed for. Ever since Windows vista Microsoft started to keep a copy of every driver that was ever installed by the system. This caused the annoying phenomenon that В after a few years your 20 GB windows install was suddenly 60 GB. In those times most of us had no clue what was happening, we simply started to do a yearly reinstall of Windows. Microsoft kept using this system in Windows 7, 8 and 10. So today the same principle applies.

Impact: 14.4 GB

In 2014 I managed to reclaim 4 GB of storage using my own guide: 1726 MB from the Geforce Experience Installer2 directory, 1002 MB from the Netservice directory and 1287 MB from the temporary Nvidia folder.

A few years have passed and I have been using Windows 10 for about a year. Today I was able to reclaim a whopping 13.3 GB. Soon I will also clean the driver repository which will boost my personal savings to over 27 GB!

Conclusion: cleaning up after Nvidia drivers is now more important than even. Especially now that SSD storage is becoming more expensive due to NAND chip shortages.

An issue with the AMD SCSIAdapter driver appears to be causing Windows 10 boot issues on certain hardware configurations, ComputerBase reports. The problem apparently being most commonly encountered on Gigabyte motherboards.

People have complained of these problems on the ComputerBase forums, Microsoft Answers (opens in new tab) , and the /r/AMD subreddit. The issues seemed to start after the Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. – SCSIAdapter – 9.3.0.221 driver was pushed via Windows Update.

So far it seems the boot issues are mostly affecting Gigabyte Aorus motherboards that use the X570 chipset. The only way to fix the issue, at least at the moment, is to roll back the driver update and prevent Windows Update from installing it again.

Complaints about the problem started to appear on Microsoft Answers on April 28. Now, over a week later, people are continuing to report that Windows Update pushed the problematic driver on them and in the process caused boot issues.

The problem has prompted fresh calls for people to install driver updates straight from the vendor rather than relying on Windows Update—and it’s hard not to agree shortly after the utility severely disrupted at least some people’s workflows.

The driver update was reportedly pushed to Windows Insider Program and normal Windows 10 users alike. Right now the best option seems to be avoiding Windows Update—or at least this particular driver—until the issue has been resolved.

Hmm, thanks for the info. My Alienware Aurora R10 which uses the Ryzen 3800X was experiencing Boot problems recently and the Dell diagnostics page pointed towards the motherboard/chipset. I had two USB peripherals attached at the time this occured, an external USB 3.0 HDD and an XBOX Wireless receiver.

I disconnected both and the problem went away. I reconnected the XBOX Wireless receiver and it still boots fine. I’ll check and see if the problem reoccurs.

I’m still on the 9.3.0.206 driver

This morning I updated my AMD graphic drivers, and, Windows must have updated the SCSI drivers in the same time frame. I wasn’t able to get back into windows 10 upon rebooting. I was thrown into the BIOS and couldn’t understand why? I thought there was something wrong with the AMD graphics drivers until I read this article. All my original Bios changes were gone, INCLUDING THE BOOT OPTION TO FAST BOOT. Just for the hell of it, I took a look at the Gigabyte X570 Aorus Pro Wifi manual and LO AND BEHOLD, it says that if you don’t have fast boot activated, The NVMe(s) drive would not be configurable. The error that i got when robooting after the graphics drivers update was that the system could not find my boot drive. Windows is installed on the NVMe drive. Coincidence?

Why would NVMe drive(s) be connected in any way to the booting time duration or as the case seemed to have been for me, to the booting process at all?

No problems here with my x570 Aorus Master. But then, I used Win10’s Group Policy to disable Windows Update updating device drivers well over a year ago. Seems like that would be common knowledge by now.

Uh, my x570 Aorus Master manual says nothing about “fast boot” having to be turned on–indeed, I boot from my PCIe4 NVMe drive with all “fast boot” bios options turned off. (I boot as fast with FB off as I do with it on–so I turn it off–thought that was common knowledge, too.) Never had a moment’s problem.

At first, I had a SATA disk showing dozen of non-existent bad tracks. Then, the two NVMe drives disappeared from Windows although I could see them normally inside BIOS. Tried 3rd NVMe, still no answer. When I read the article, I rolled back the driver to Typical NVMe controller (v10.0.19041.844) and the NVMe reappeared!!

Idk if the faulty reported bad sectors on the 3.5″ SATA drive were due to this (I guess not) but still, one less problem for now. (Gigabyte X570 Gaming X v1.1)
