Many PC and Mac games treat the keyboard as a first-class citizen and have poor support for game controllers. You can remap your controller buttons to keyboard key presses to get around this limitation.

You’ll lose some analog input—for example, the joysticks will just function as arrow keys that are on or off without the usual range of sensitivity—but for some games, that’s not a huge issue.

If you’re just looking to play Steam games with a controller, Steam already has great built-in tools for remapping controllers in its Big Picture Mode and will be a much easier solution than anything else listed here. For use system-wide or in non-Steam games, you’ll need a third party application.

Connect Your Controller

This step is obvious, but with so many kinds of controllers on the market, it can be a challenge to get them working correctly, especially on macOS. We have a comprehensive guide for most mainstream controllers that you can reference if you’re having issues, but most current-gen controllers will be plug and play on Windows and macOS. Last-gen and earlier controllers may need custom drivers and a bit of setup.

You can make sure the controller is connected by opening up the “Devices” tab in Window’s settings. Head to Settings > Devices > Bluetooth & Other Devices and look under “Other Devices.”

How to remap xbox playstation and other controller buttons in steam

On macOS, you can usually find USB controllers in the “System Information” app, under “USB.” Bluetooth controllers should show up in the Bluetooth menu in the top menubar.

Windows (And Linux) Setup – AntiMicro

There are a couple of good commercial options out there, most notably reWASD, but AntiMicro is free, open source, and does its job just as well. It also works on Linux as well.

Download the latest release from Github (or the portable version if you don’t want to install it) and open it up.

How to remap xbox playstation and other controller buttons in steam

So long as your controller is connected, you’ll see this screen laying out all the sticks and buttons. You can click any of these to set a mapping to any keyboard key, or the mouse. If you press the buttons on your controller, it should light up the button in AntiMicro, so you won’t have to worry about figuring out which one “Button 14” is.

Mapping a joystick to WASD or arrow keys turn it from an analog input to a digital one, which can be less responsive, but you can configure the dead zones and other settings by clicking on the “L Stick” button in the middle.

How to remap xbox playstation and other controller buttons in steam

The joysticks also work well when mapped to the mouse, which brings back some analog control. That’s good for any games requiring first-person aiming.

There are a few advanced options in the settings, like macro support and profile switching. But, out of the box, AntiMicro works well for simply remapping a controller to keyboard keys.

MacOS Setup – Enjoyable

How to remap xbox playstation and other controller buttons in steam

For macOS, Enjoyable is a great alternative to AntiMicro that’s even simpler to use. Just run the app, press a button on your controller, then press a key on your keyboard, and repeat for each button you want to map. After that’s done, press the run button (it looks like a “>”) in the top right corner, and it should be good to go. It doesn’t have any presence on your Mac’s menubar, so you must have the window open while you want to use your controller.

Enjoyable supports multiple profiles, switching profiles with buttons, and moving the mouse. The joysticks can be a bit glitchy to map, as it tends to switch between multiple axes. But, with some trial and error, it should work fine.

Luckily, you can edit the controls by editing the config file directly.

Open a Windows file explorer window; shortcut: Windows key + E

Paste the following into the “address” bar at the top and press enter:
%userprofile%\Saved Games\FALCOM\yso_win

This will open the folder where the config file resides. Double click yso_win.ini and it should automatically open in Notepad.

Scroll down to the bottom and find a section of the file that looks like this:

That section is where the gamepad buttons are assigned. You just need to edit the button numbers to change the controls. The control names are mostly obvious, except for these:

PAD_SHOT = Use Magic
PAD_USE = Use Boost
PAD_SWORD_REVD / REVU = Previous / Next Skill

The buttons on an Xbox 360 or One controller correspond to the following button numbers:

A = Button1
B = Button2
X = Button3
Y = Button4
LB = Button5
RB = Button6
Back (360)/View (One) = Button7
Start (360)/Menu (One) = Button8
Left stick click = Button9
Right stick click = Button10

The triggers are not remappable because they are analog inputs and not buttons.

So, for example, if you wanted to make the action (attack) button to be the X button instead of A, you’d change this line:

This translates to:
Attack/Ok = X
Jump/Cancel = A
Use Skill = B
Use Boost = Y
Menu = Start/Menu
Walk = Left stick click (pointless, never any need to walk)
Previous/Next Skill = Left/Right bumper

The only annoying thing is that you can’t remap Ok and Cancel separately from Attack and Jump. Ok must always be the same button as Attack and Cancel must always be the same as Jump. This makes navigating the menu awkward since it makes X the Ok button and A the Cancel button. It’s not ideal, but you’ll get used to this after time and this layout is much better for the “action” part of the game

How to remap xbox playstation and other controller buttons in steam

Microsoft’s Xbox One allows you to remap the buttons on its controller. This feature was originally introduced with Microsoft’s high-end Xbox One Elite controller, but it now works with standard Xbox One controllers as well.

These instructions only apply to remapping buttons on an Xbox One controller connected to an Xbox One, not an Xbox One controller connected to a PC. If you have an Xbox One Elite controller, you can download the Xbox Accessories app from the Windows 10 Store and use it to remap the controller’s buttons when it’s connected to a PC, though.

Here’s what you need to know:

  • This change happens at the Xbox One operating system level. Games aren’t aware of it. So, for example, you might swap the left and right sticks using this feature. Games you play won’t know you’ve done this, so when a game tells you to use your right stick, you’ll need to use your left stick. You’ll need to remember how you’ve mapped your buttons.
  • Your button mapping layout affects all games, apps, and the Xbox One’s dashboard. You can’t create specific settings for specific games.
  • Each user account signed into your Xbox One can have a single profile, which is associated with the user account and not the controller hardware. If you use an Xbox One Elite controller, you can save multiple profiles and switch between them, but the system can’t automatically switch profiles when you launch a specific game.

If all that sounds worth it, then let’s talk about how to make this happen.

How to Customize Your Buttons

First, head to “My Games and Apps” on your Xbox One. Select “Apps” on the left side of the screen and launch the “Xbox Accessories” app. This app is installed by default.

How to remap xbox playstation and other controller buttons in steam

You’ll see your connected controller here, and you can select “Configure” to continue. If you have more than one controller connected at once, you can use the left and right buttons on the directional pad to select the controller you want to configure.

How to remap xbox playstation and other controller buttons in steam

Choose “Button Mapping” on the left side of your screen. You can always come back here and select “Restore Defaults” to restore your controller to its default settings later.

How to remap xbox playstation and other controller buttons in steam

You can remap buttons in two ways. First, you could choose the button you want to remap button from the list at the top-left corner of the screen and then choose the button you want it to act as from the “Map to” box below it.

For example, if you chose “A button” in the top box and “B button” in the bottom box, the A button would function as a B button when you pressed it.

How to remap xbox playstation and other controller buttons in steam

You can also press and hold a button you want to remap, and then press the button you want it to function as when the prompt appears to quickly remap a button.

For example, you can long-press the A button and then tap the B button. The A button would then function as the B button when you pressed it.

How to remap xbox playstation and other controller buttons in steam

A few other options here allow you to swap the left and right sticks to reverse them. You can also swap the triggers, which will make the left trigger function as the right trigger, and vice versa.

The “Invert right stick Y axis” and “Invert left stick Y axis” options allow you to swap the vertical axes of the sticks. In other words, if you activated this option, pushing the stick upwards would have the same effect that pushing the stick downwards normally would. You’d push the stick up to go down and push it down to go up.

If you have an Xbox One Elite controller, you’ll have more options for configuring your controller here.

How to remap xbox playstation and other controller buttons in steam

When you’re finished, select “Done.” You can come back to the Xbox Accessories app to check your custom button mapping settings if you need a reminder of which button functions as which other button.

To reset your changes, select “Configure” in the Xbox Accessories app and then select “Restore defaults.”

PlayStation 4 owners can remap the buttons on their DualShock 4 controllers, too. Nintendo is the odd company out now, as Nintendo’s Wii U doesn’t offer a button-remapping feature.

I went into the game and to remap the controller and some steam controller program came up for the game. I wanted to switch the scan and run , however some presets have more than one keystroke to it such as the preset with run. So when I changed the run with scan it only placed scan and not the others..
Anyways how do I reset this stupid steam app/program they are using to remap back to default ?

If anyone knows please help.
Thank you

Thank you very much . would never have found that.

However if anyone else reads this . < make sure your controller is on >or when you right click on game or it will not show option to steam controller config.

And it is not clear on the stupid app/window how to reset to default , but it can be done here.

It is the same steam controller window that comes up in the game when you try to remap , BUT the one in the game does not give you the same options as the one you open this way out of the game by right clicking on the game in the library ..

God steam sucks sometime with what they do. lol

Embrace your unique style by remapping your PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch controllers.

How to remap xbox playstation and other controller buttons in steam

The PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X/S are the hot new consoles on the block, and the Nintendo Switch is still going strong as the best handheld console more than four years after its release. If you’ve invested in one of these machines, you’ll want to make sure it’s perfectly tailored to suit you.

One customization option you might not be aware of is the ability to remap the buttons on your controller. If you’ve found a way to use your controller that feels more natural than the default settings, or you can’t press the buttons or move the sticks in the way the manufacturer intended, you can change what each input does.

Keep in mind that we’re not reconfiguring the controls in any individual game. The type of remapping we’re talking about will affect every game and app, as well as the interactions you have with the home screen and menus on your console.

Remap controller buttons on the PS5

From the home screen, navigate to Settings by selecting the cog icon in the top right corner. Choose Accessibility, Controllers, and then Custom Button Assignments.

First, turn on the Enable Custom Button Assignments toggle switch. Then, you can go to the Switch the Left and Right Analog Sticks option, which is one of the more straightforward customizations. To make more detailed changes, select Customize Button Assignments.

A picture of your PS5 DualSense controller will appear on screen. Select the button you want to remap, and then change its function by choosing a different button. To give the square button the functionality of the circle button, for example, select the square button on screen and then pick the circle button from the pop-up menu.

All of your changes will appear on a controller diagram on the screen, so you can keep track of what you’ve done. Down in the bottom right-hand corner, you can select Apply to confirm your choices and go back, or Reset to put the default configuration back in place.

Remap controller buttons on the Xbox Series X/S

From the home screen, press the Xbox button on your controller to open the side panel, then choose Settings. Head to Ease of Access, Controller, and Button mapping.

On the right, you’ll see a picture of your Xbox wireless controller, so you’ll always know which button you’re adjusting at any given time. You’ll also see a helpful Restore to default option underneath the picture, so you can always go back if you want to.

On the left side of the screen, you’ll be able to pick from a few preset remapping options. These include swapping the analog sticks, flipping the trigger buttons, and inverting the Y axis on the left or right analog stick. There’s also an option to turn off controller vibration.

To remap a button, select it from the drop-down menu at the top, then choose the remap option from the drop-down menu directly below. You can remap the A button to the B button, the left trigger to the right trigger, and so on. As you make your selections, you’ll see the relevant buttons appear in green on the picture on the right.

Alternatively, press and hold the button you want to remap on the controller itself. When prompted, press the button you’re remapping the original one to. To make the Y button act like the X button, for example, press and hold Y, and when it’s highlighted, tap X.

Remap controller buttons on the Nintendo Switch

From the home screen, tap the cog icon to bring up the System Settings screen. You’ll then need to choose Controllers and Sensors and Change Button Mapping.

A list of attached controllers will appear—the left and right Joy-Con, plus any other wireless gamepads that are currently connected to the Switch. Select the controller you want to remap from the list and pick Change.

You’ll see a diagram of your selected controller on screen. To remap a button, select it, then choose the new function you want it to have. For example, to make the B button work as the X button, select the B button first, then pick the X button.

To swap the left and right sticks, for instance, or to invert the directions of the analog sticks, select Control Stick Settings. Select Done to confirm your changes.

If you come up with a remapping profile that you don’t want to use just yet, pick Save Mapping from the main Button Mapping screen. Use Load Mapping to bring up to five different remapping profiles you’ve previously saved. There’s also a Reset option here to quickly get back to the Switch defaults, if you need to.

In this controls guide, the analogue sticks on either console controller are shown as L and R while pressing down on the analogues is denoted as L3 and R3.

How to remap the Hades controls

You can customise the button layout of your Hades controls by pressing the Options/Menu button, selecting ‘Controls’ from the pause screen, and then scrolling onto the action that you wish to change. You can then select the button input and then press the button that you wish to replace the current bind.

You can also adjust your analogue dead zone and toggle the aim assist from this menu.

How the death mechanic works in Hades

Zagreus is aided in his quest by the Olympian Gods, bestowing Boons that offer different stat increases or effects, depending on which God blesses you. These buffs reset if you die during your run, with a random God gifting you a new selection of Boons on your next attempt to beat the game.

Each time Zagreus’ health reaches zero, you’ll be transported back to the House of Hades and must start your run again. Still, you’ll have the opportunity to unlock or upgrade weapons and attributes using the treasure that you gained during your previous attempt to escape the Underworld.

Charon’s Obols

How to remap xbox playstation and other controller buttons in steam

These coins are earned during a run-through and can be spent at either Charon’s shop or one of the Wells of Charon that appear randomly throughout the Underworld. You’ll be able to purchase power-up, healing items, and Boons in return for Obols.

Keep in mind that these boosts are only active during that run, and should you die, you’ll lose the boosts and all of your Obols; this is the only currency that resets upon your death.

The House Contractor

How to remap xbox playstation and other controller buttons in steam

After a couple of run-throughs, you’ll gain access to the House Contractor, allowing you to spruce up the House of Hades and unlock bonuses as you journey the Underworld. Here, you’ll spend gemstones, which can be found as rewards during a run.

You can find the House Contractor to the right of Hades’ desk in the main chamber of his residence.

The Mirror of Night

How to remap xbox playstation and other controller buttons in steam

You can upgrade several talents by using the Mirror of Night within your bedroom. The upgrades will cost you Darkness, which can be found while attempting to escape the Underworld.

There are four talents available at the start of the game, but more can be unlocked by using Chthonic Keys. After several runs, you can spend a key to reset your purchased talents and reassign them using Darkness.

The Training Room

How to remap xbox playstation and other controller buttons in steam

To start another escape attempt, head to the left as you enter the Training Room, and you’ll see a door with a purple light shining. Approach it, and you’ll be prompted to press R1/RB to initiate an escape.

As you get further into the game, you’ll be able to access Keepsakes. These artefacts are held in a cabinet within the training room, the final room in the House of Hades, before you can attempt an escape. Gifting characters Nectar will unlock Keepsakes, and they’ll grant you unique bonuses during your run, depending on which one you choose to equip.

Another feature of the Training Room is its access to different weapons or Infernal Arms. The weapons can be unlocked by spending Chthonic Keys and can be further upgraded by using Titan Blood – once you have unlocked the Rail and collected at least one Titan Blood, that is.

Near the centre of the room is Skelly. This little guy is effectively your training dummy, ready and waiting for you to beat them eternally until you’ve mastered your weapon of choice and are ready to face Hades’ hordes.

That’s all for the Hades controls and tips for your journey through the Underworld; good luck against the endless monsters lurking in the halls of Hades’ domain.

The only controller that is meant for this game is an official box 360 controller. (Wired is best) so I’m going to ask, why are you using a controller that isn’t compatible or meant to be used with the game?

Which brings me to the following point, all of the buttons are mapped correctly, it’s your incompatible controller that is the problem. So it’s impossible for it to work well with the game if some things are messed up. If it worked well you wouldn’t even be having any problems at all.

even if you can manage to get things working, the game will still not function correctly simply because it’s not a controller that is supposed to be being used.

Same with any other controller people will most likely make the claim that they have it working fine.

I know this isn’t what you probably wanted to read but I’m sorry I’m really sick and tired of people causing their own problems then complaining something is wrong with their game or something isn’t working right.

Here is the solution, all games that are on the PC are only programmed to work correctly with an official xbox 360 controller (Again wired is best) so get yourself one and you won’t have to worry about any problems.

How to remap xbox playstation and other controller buttons in steam

Windows: PlayStation 5 owners can now use their PS5’s DualSense controllers to play PC games on Steam. Valve’s most recent Steam beta adds full compatibility for the DualSense in all controller-enabled games by default — no extra software to necessary, and no settings to configure.

DualSense support in Steam was inevitable — the app supports over 200 other controller options, including many Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and PlayStation 4 controllers — but getting near-perfect compatibility in Steam so soon after the PS5’s launch is exciting. After all, the PS5’s controller is easily one of the best controllers on any system.

I still think it’s worth waiting to buy the PS5 (not that many people have a choice, due to the low supplies), but I have a confession: I bought one, and the coolest thing about it is the DualSense controller. It’s well-built, the buttons are snappy, and the thumbsticks have good tension, but it’s the controller’s haptic rumble and adaptive triggers that have me smitten.

Unfortunately, the DualSense’s adaptive triggers — which can simulate extra tension based on in-game actions — are the only feature Steam does not support. However, the controller’s gyro, touchpad, and haptic rumble will work for all controller-enabled Steam games without the need for patches from the developers.

How to set up your PlayStation 5 Controller in Steam

Before you can use the PS5 controller in Steam, you need to opt into the Steam client beta. (The update should also roll out to the stable version soon, if you don’t mind waiting a little longer.)

  1. Open Steam, then go to Steam > Settings > Account.
  2. Click “Change” under “Beta participation.”
  3. Select “Steam beta client” from the drop-down menu, then click “OK.”
  4. Select “Restart Steam” to apply the update.

With Steam updated, it’s time to connect the controller to your PC. You plug it in via USB-C cable (the charging cable that came packaged in your PS5 will work just fine), or you can also connect it to your PC via Bluetooth using these steps:

  1. On your Windows PC, go to Settings > Devices > Bluetooth & Other Devices and make sure “Bluetooth” is enabled.
  2. On your controller, press and hold the “PS” + “Share” buttons simultaneously until the LED blinking blue.
  3. Back in your PC’s Bluetooth settings, click “Add Bluetooth or other device” and select “Bluetooth.”
  4. Click the controller in the list of available devices.
  5. You’ll know it’s connected when the PS5 controller’s LED stops blinking and a Windows Notification appears saying “Wireless Controller Ready to Use.”

Once your DualSense controller is connected to Windows, open Steam and wait for the app to recognise the controller. A Steam notification will pop up when the controller is connected. Your Steam games are now playable with the PS5 controller, and you can use it to control the app while in Big Picture Mode.

One of the conveniences of playing games through Steam is the app’s built-in controller support. The client automatically recognizes dozens of controllers when you connect them to your PC, and more are added all the time—including the new Xbox Series X and Xbox Elite controllers . Steam even supports the Series X’s dynamic trigger rumble feature and the Xbox Elite’s extra buttons and paddles.

Unlike some input devices, you’ll need to configure a few settings before you can use your new Xbox controllers to play through your giant Steam library. First, the Xbox Series X and Xbox Elite controllers only work if you’re running the latest Steam app beta. Full support should roll out to the stable version soon, but if you want to use them immediately, you have to opt into the Steam beta:

  1. Open Steam.
  2. Go to Steam > Settings > Account.
  3. Click “Change” under the Beta participation section.
  4. Select “Steam Beta Update” from the drop-down menu.
  5. Click “OK,” then reboot and update Steam.

Next, you’ll need to connect the controller to your PC. You can do this by plugging it in via USB or via Bluetooth :

  1. Press the Xbox button to turn on the controller.
  2. Hold the “Pair” button down for three seconds to put the controller into pairing mode. The Xbox button will start flashing.
  3. On your PC, go to Settings > Devices > Bluetooth & other devices.
  4. Make sure Bluetooth is turned on, then click “Add Bluetooth or other device.”
  5. Select your Xbox controller from the list of available devices.
  6. Wait for your PC to set up the controller and download any necessary drivers.

But before you start playing, turn on Steam’s Big Picture mode, then go to Settings > Controller settings and make sure “Xbox Configuration Support” is toggled on so you can customise your controller’s button layout, and use features like the Series X controller’s trigger rumble.

Many of us gamers prefer to play our PC games on a controller. Especially those who have come from playing consoles most of their lives. This guide will show you how to remap any controller including an Xbox controller using JoyToKey.

A lot of new games will come with controller support built-in. However, a lot of the older games lack this feature, unfortunately.

That’s where JoyToKey saves the day. It’s a simple and smart software that takes a few minutes to set up and configure.

Download JoyToKey

The first step is to download JoyToKey from its official website. Select the first file under “Download the latest version”. The download file will be a ZIP file. Open the ZIP file and run the setup wizard. Follow the instructions until complete.

Setup and Configure JoyToKey with Controller

Change Compatibility Mode

The next step is to launch the JoyToKey app on your computer. However, before you do this. It is recommended to run JoyToKey in Compatibility Mode. This fixes some issues you may run into after you set it up.

To do this go to your JoyToKey root folder and find the joytokey.exe file. Right-click and select Properties. Go to the Compatibility mode tab and run the application in compatibility mode for Windows XP Service Pack 3. Click Apply to save.

Launch JoyToKey and Setup

To assign your keyboard buttons to your controller. Connect your controller to your computer via USB or Bluetooth.

Create a New Profile

Launch the JoyToKey application. Here you will see the User Interface. The first thing to do is to create a new profile. You will see “Create” at the bottom left of the JoyTokey app. Name the profile and save.

Show all Axes

Next, go to the options menu to the right of joystick 2. Click it and under the show/hide buttons heading choose “show all axes” from the drop-down menu.

How to remap xbox playstation and other controller buttons in steam

Now take your controller and start clicking buttons and moving the analog sticks. If the joystick functions start lighting up yellow. The controller is detected.

Assign the Buttons

To assign a controller button to a keyboard button simply press the button on the controller. The button should highlight in yellow on the JoyToKey app.

How to remap xbox playstation and other controller buttons in steam

For example, here we assign the left analog stick on an Xbox One Controller. Push the analog stick to the right. You can see the JoyToKey has detected the movement. Now double click the button on the screen. Here you can choose a function for the button. Choose D. Now, right on the left analog stick is assigned to the D button on the keyboard.

How to remap xbox playstation and other controller buttons in steam

Repeat this simple process for the rest of the buttons you want to assign on your controller.

Assign the Mouse

The final step is to assign the mouse to your directional analog stick. The analog stick you use to look around or aim in-game. Follow the same process as above. Move your right analog stick so JoyToKey can detect the button.

This time when you double click on the button to assign it. You go to the mouse tab at the top of the screen, not the keyboard tab.

Copy the following settings for a general guide. You may have to tweak these to fit your preference. For example, if the sensitivity is too low or high. You can change the “adjust mouse cursor speed while the button is pressed” function.

  • I have a generic bluetooth pc controller, its called the g910. Games treat it as an xbox controller but the button mapping is way different. Is there a program that can switch the buttons around. I have tried programs like joy2key and xpadder that convert button pushes to keyboard buttons. This kind of works but when used it games that support xbox controllers it will do the keyboard push and uses the actual xbox button that i push and the game switches to xbox layout.

Also the reason im using this controller over others like wired xbox controller or wireless xbox controller is this one uses actual bluetooth and not some usb reciever. the tablet pc i am using has only one usb port and you cant charge and use a usb device at same time.

  • Yeah, this assumed 360-controller is pretty bullshit, and is one of the newer indications of how much console saturation is seeping into the PC gaming realm.

When I get into situations like this, there are usually two ways I get rid of the forced controls:

    1) Find a way to disable gamepad recognition in the game altogether. Usually this falls under finding a ini file and setting a controller flag to false. For games where this is not an option, my disabled brother has had to use some directx input interception program that nulls out all expected gamepad input. In both cases I will continue to use joy2key to use my own button config.

    2) I use x360ce which seems to magically remap whatever 360 inputs are expected to whatever gamepad I happen to have. I dunno exactly why it works, but it does, and I get the included benefit of rumble support, too (using a PS2 controller myself), for console ports that expect it.

I’ve not found anything similar with a bit of searching, so I thought I would post here. Using a Switch pro controller, Steam big picture, OSX 10.15. The controller works fine in the Steam UI, and in other games (Specifically, Borderlands 2). On starting Subnautica, enabling the controller and everything goes wild. As if a random stream of inputs. Promptly the game starts (presumably some random button press causes that) and then just wild random movement and window panes once the game starts.

Any help would be nice. It was fun with the mouse for a while, but as the game advertises full controller support, I was expecting that to work!

Thanks for the input! I tried this out, selecting “forced off” under the game’s properties.

The controller didn’t seem to be out of control, it also didn’t seem to do anything now. Or rather, one button had an action that seemed to be “drill down” in menus, but there is no other control: no directional control in menus, no stick control, no “cancel” to pop out of menus. It did seem like perhaps the “select” button worked, as it could go in to the selected menu (but not change what menu item that is).

Currently using the controller to play FF14 and having great fun there, so no rush but would still like to resolve! Thanks again.

Hello! I have this issue except on Xbox 360 controller, PS4 controller and a generic controller through Steam. Since they updated their Steam controller configurations (it hasn’t worked since 2020/11/04) and no controller seems to be working anymore, i’ve even tried to remap all 3 controllers in Steam to use keyboard mapping yet it still won’t work, they work inside the game start menu to move around and selecting force-off in steam settings does make the controllers show up again however they don’t function in-game other than opening the Exit menu. I’ve also tried to remap it using DS4Windows yet same thing there.. This made me really sad this morning because i love to play this game using my controller yet now it doesn’t work at all no matter what i do .. No settings were changed at all prior to this issue occuring and it is the same for both the original Subnautica game and Below Zero, just suddenly this morning the controller no longer works in the game.

I should also say, the controller works fine in other games not running through Steam and in Steam Big Picture but not any of the Subnautica games

Is there anything that i might have missed or is this a know issue and a fix is on the way? Would really love to know, thank you very much in advance

    My setup:
    Windows 10 Pro 1909
    version: 18363.1139
    AMD Ryzen 5 1500x
    8GB DDR4 RAM
    MSI GTX 1650

    Steam API v020
    Steam package versions 1603992987

Subnautica Below Zero Oct 2020 37024

EDIT: This was somehow resolved by creating a new game :S so we’ll call it #resolved

Hello, As the title states i would like to know how to map my games controls to any controller. By this i mean how can i compensate for that fact that on a ps4 controller up and down on the left hand stick is the X Axis while on a xbox controller it is the Y Axis. Is this even possible?

I’m not sure about any possible controller out there, but at the very least for PS4 and XB controllers, the default unity input settings should work pretty well. I am not sure what’s causing you to see the X/Y Axis mismatch between the controller types, but that’s not how the unity input is set up by default – on both the PS4 and XB controllers, the button with the “X Axis” label is the left-stick horizontal axis, and the “Y Axis” label is the left-stick vertical axis.

This graphic (courtesy Jimmy Vegas – source http://www.jvunity.weebly.com/uploads/4/7/6/0/47606749/controlmap.png) is useful in knowing the button labels to match up with Inputs. The labels correspond very closely between the two controller types.

How to remap xbox playstation and other controller buttons in steam
Just to ensure this was accurate, I tried plugging both an XB and PS4 controller in and using both on a my project, and both responded identically using the default unity Input setup. Is it possible that your input settings of your project have gotten mangled? You can check this by going Edit > Project Settings > Input in unity. I’ve included an example of what they look like by default, with the horizontal and vertical controller setups expanded for details. I’d double-check your project against that just to make sure it all lines up.

How to remap xbox playstation and other controller buttons in steam
As for other controllers, I’m not sure – I imagine unity’s support varies from controller to controller, I doubt there is one single sure-fire way to support every one. PS4 and XB controllers are going to be the vast majority of your install base. If you’re going for non-standard controllers, you might check the Asset store? I know for instance there is a package that lets you get input from a Wii remote via bluetooth on there – possibly there are others for the controller you’re interested in?

Steam has received an update that adds new features for Xbox Elite controllers, as well as other types of controllers. The new features include additional rebind functionality, extra options for the PS5 DualSense controller, and more.

What can you do with Xbox Elite controllers on Steam now?

First and foremost, this update adds what Steam is calling “extended Xbox controller support”. If you’ve got an Xbox Elite controller (or a new Xbox Series X controller), you’ll notice additional rebind options. You can now remap the Elite’s controller paddles in your configurations, while the Series X controller’s Share button is now a remappable key. Trigger rumble is now also supported via the Windows Gaming Input API. It’s also now possible for you to connect more than 4 Xbox controllers to Steam, should you wish to. This will come in handy for local multiplayer games that support more than 4 players.

It’s not just Xbox controllers getting some love in this update, however. The PS5’s DualSense controller also now has some additional Steam functionality. Specifically, a new dropdown menu has been added for the PS5 controller personalization menu which allows you to disable the controller’s LED. You can also enable it only when multiple controllers are hooked up, or enable it at all times. The default setting is for the LED only to come to life when multiple controllers are connected, so make sure to change that if you’re not happy with that setting.

How to remap xbox playstation and other controller buttons in steamThe LED on the PS5’s DualSense controller can now be configured when using it with Steam.

You can read the full patch notes – which also include a couple of extra devices and some installation instructions – right here. The Xbox Elite controller is currently the subject of some controversy; Microsoft is facing a lawsuit over controller drift. The Redmond tech giant recently asked a court to send the lawsuit to arbitration. In response to that lawsuit, Microsoft also recently extended the warranty on its Xbox Elite controllers from 90 days to a year. Here’s hoping your Xbox Elite controller holds up better than it did for the plaintiffs in that lawsuit.

So I’m using an Xbox 360 Controller for PC Gaming. Over time I’ve used several remapping programs (Xpadder, JoyToKey, Steam Controller Mapping, Etc.) and they all seem to have the same limitation (When playing a non-steam game. Playing Steam Games is a whole other mess). When I’m playing a game with “Baked In” controller support, remapping a button does not override the button. It just seems to append the remapped key to the signal when I press a button.

While this works great for games without controller support, it causes madness in a game with controller support, since now the game is trying to take both the controller command and the remapped keyboard command at the same time. Is there some way to completely override the button signal from going through when I’m remapping the controller, either in one of the listed apps or through some outside means?

Unplug the controller, start the game, plug the controller in.
While this won’t work for all games, it should work for most, because most games look for input devices at launch and won’t find a controller if it’s plugged in after the game has launched.

To add to @Chippie’s answer, I would first take that into consideration. If that doesn’t do anything or does not work in some cases, then I advise deleting or clearing the configuration files for keymapping in stubborn games. Two important things to keep in mind are 1; some games have their default binds hard-coded in and cannot be removed or cleared, and 2; due to the nature of PC games, the configuration files will not only vary in format, but will also differ in location per game.

If you want to find configuration files for a game but don’t know where to start, there is some advice I can give you from personal experience.

AppData paths seem to be a preference among developers. Settings held in AppData are typically stored in %AppData% (AppData\Roaming). Another good place to look will be %LocalAppData% (AppData\Local). Rarely, game settings or data are stored in LocalLow (%UserProfile%\AppData\LocalLow).

Going with this approach, the next step is to look for folders associated with either the game name directly, or the developer/publisher’s name. For instance; Ruiner store’s it’s save data in %LocalAppData%\Ruiner\ , whereas The Chronicles of Riddick is located in %LocalAppData%\Atari\The Chronicles of Riddick – Assault on Dark Athena\ .

Some games store settings in the registry, the same principals above still apply in some cases, but settings will most likely be in the HKCU\Software or HKLM\Software registry hives.

Assuming you have found a game’s settings files, and that the keybinds can be modified, locate where the binds are and clear them. Now run a game with your controller and see if you can apply gamepad input as the primary/only input. Hope this information can help you out.

DS4Windows is an open-source gamepad input mapper and virtual emulator designed to use and connect your PlayStation controller (DualShock 3/4 and DualSense 5) to a Windows 10 & 11 PC.

Get the best gaming experience with state of the art features, gamepad customization and less input latency on a PS3/PS4/PS5 Controller.

    Why DS4Windows?

Due to Sony’s PlayStation controllers like the DualShock4 not supporting Windows natively (by that we mean you can try plugging it in via USB or Bluetooth and it won’t be detected, sucks right?). Well, this is where an awesome tool called DS4windows comes handy and emulates a Xbox controller and tricks the computer into thinking the DS4, is in fact, an Xbox game pad (virtual emulation occurs).

    Connect DS4 Controller

DS4 Windows supports any PlayStation controller, from DualShock 3, 4 and PS5 DualSense to Nintendo Switch Pro, Joycons and even “fake” DS4 replica’s.

    KB+Mouse/Joystick Mapper

Not only can you map the controller to any game, but you can also modify it as your keyboard + mouse. Macros integration & motion sensor emulation.

    Supports Most Games

With various games added and tested to make sure DS4 Windows works with all the latest and greatest games.

    Profile System

DS4Windows comes with an automatic profiling system that you can configure for each specific game or controller.

    Free Application

DS4 Windows is an opensource application which means its free and maintained by Ryochan7/Community

    Helpful Community

Over the last few years, a thriving community has built up around DS4Win with continuous support & updates.

Not only is DS4win able to emulate and connect your controller to Windows, but you are also able to remap and rebind your keys/buttons to anything you want (including keyboard, mouse, joysticks, lightbar, rumble/vibration and motion sensors, also known as gyro).

DS4 is the best free game pad input mapper, virtual emulator and customizer available. Giving you the power to take control!

    Features and Requirements

Choosing DS4Windows will give you the best gaming experience with less input lag and latency issues compared to other paid apps. In addition to added customization options, now you can always play with a controller and bypass game limitations!

DS4Windows works by remapping the user’s “real” gamepad into a new, virtual / “fake” / emulated gamepad or by directly mapping the real gamepad to the user’s keyboard and mouse. This allows:

    • Using your gamepad in games that support (for example) only Xbox controllers
      • It’s possible to emulate either a Xbox or DS4 gamepad, but keep in mind that most games do not support DS4 controllers in any way, requiring Xbox emulation
      • The virtual controller is fully configurable: its buttons and sticks can be remapped to other buttons/sticks or entirely disable, their behavior tweaked , special functions configured etc.
    • Using your DS4 via Bluetooth in games that only recognize DS4 controllers connected via USB (Wired v1 DS4 emulation)
    • Playing games that do not support gamepads by controlling the PC’s keyboard and mouse
    • Mapping the controllers motion sensors to control the mouse, sticks etc.
    • And much more!
    • Use the same app for mapping a DS4, DualSense, Switch Pro, and JoyCon
    • Emulate an Xbox 360 controller for using a DS4 in many PC games that don’t directly support it
    • Emulate a DS4 v.1 for games that only support a Sony DS4 v.1 in some situations. Allow third party DS4 support or wireless support for some games
    • Play PC games that only support KB+M input by emulating KB+M actions
    • Customize input and output response using many modifier options
    • Use DS4 touchpad as a mouse or map to other output controls
    • Play games with Gyro controls by emulating Mouse or Mouse-like RS output when emulating an Xbox 360 controller
    • Control the lightbar color: Check battery level, assign slot numbers to specific colors, profile controlled lightbar color
    • Automatically switch profiles when different programs are in focus
    • Mode Shifts for allowing more mappings beyond the number of buttons on a device
    • Automatically checks and downloads future app updates
    • Windows 10 or newer
    • Microsoft .NET 5.0 or higher
    • Visual C++ 2015-2019 Redistributable. x64 or x86
    • ViGEmBus v.1.17.333.0 driver or later (DS4Windows will install it for you)
    • Sony DualShock 4 or other supported controller
    • Connection method:
      • Micro USB cable
      • Bluetooth 4.0 (via an adapter or built in pc). Only use of Microsoft BT stack is supported. CSR BT stack is confirmed to not work with the DS4 even though some CSR adapters work fine using Microsoft BT stack. Toshiba’s adapters currently do not work. Disabling ‘Enable output data’ in the controller profile settings might help with latency issues, but will disable lightbar and rumble support.

Home » Guides » Halo Infinite: How to Remap Buttons, Change Controls & Sensitivity

Started playing Halo Infinite’s multiplayer but the controls just don’t feel right? You’re not alone. Here’s everything you need to know to remap buttons, change controls and stick sensitivity in Halo Infinite.

    Remapping Buttons in Halo Infinite

To remap single buttons, press the Menu button to open the Control Panel and then select ‘Settings’ at the very top of this menu.

How to remap xbox playstation and other controller buttons in steam

You’ll now be brought to the ‘Controller’ menu. Here, if you scroll down through the options, you’ll find a list of all the button inputs for when you’re on-foot and in vehicles.

How to remap xbox playstation and other controller buttons in steam

Find the one you want to change and then press A on it. You’ll now be told to press the button on your Xbox controller that you want to assign that action to.

How to remap xbox playstation and other controller buttons in steam

When you’ve pressed the button, if another action was already assigned to it, that will be replaced and you’ll need to find it in the list and assign it to a new button.

Change Controller Layouts & Stick Sensitivity

If you’d rather change your entire controller layout to something like Bumper Jumper, you can do this, too.

Head to the very top of the ‘Controller’ menu in ‘Settings’ and then select ‘Button Layout’ at the very top of this screen.

How to remap xbox playstation and other controller buttons in steam

You’ll then be given a dropdown menu of all the different controller layouts. Once you’ve found the one you’re happy with, press A to confirm your choice.

Changing stick sensitivity is also done in the same menu, and can be found under the ‘Sensitivity & Acceleration’ sub-heading. Here, we found increasing Look Acceleration and Look Sensitivity (Horizontal) & Look Sensitivity (Vertical) had the desired effect of making us feel that little bit more agile.

How much better is the controller compared to the mouse/keyboard?

Thinking about setting it up but I’ll have to use my Xbox 360 controller probably. Well, maybe not but yeah.

Damn nevermind my old ass gamepad worked.

Btw you can, kinda do that.

There is a calibration option in the main ESC settings and you can program your controller there. I had to redo mine because all of the buttons were screwy.

How much better is the controller compared to the mouse/keyboard?

Thinking about setting it up but I’ll have to use my Xbox 360 controller probably. Well, maybe not but yeah.

It’s not really “better” but it is a pretty good control scheme. You really have more than enough buttons to match the hotbars. Plus I really just enjoy holding a controller in my hand rather than sitting at a computer all day with my mouse and keyboard. It just feels more like a classic ff video game with the controller. Targeting is about as annoying as you’d expect. It’s not a problem until you’re fighting multiple mobs that are spawning in FATES or Duties and you’re trying to select the right one. You can lose some time. I don’t know about healing with it. seems like a dangerous move. But tanking and DD’ing is pretty easy with a controller.

I’m sure you’ve seen me talking about the PlayStation 5 DualSense controller and how to get it working in either Steam or DS4Windows, on the PC. I know many of you have enjoyed those videos and articles, and I enjoyed making them (here, here, here, here, and here).

However, I did want to address a question I’ve been asking from time to time, that being, “why don’t I see PlayStation prompts in games when using the DualSense”? This is a great question and one that I’ve prepared yet another interesting and educational video about.

    Check out that video below.

The TLDR; DS4Windows uses Xinput or the Xbox Input that is native to Windows (7/8/10). So it’s emulation the DualSense by using Xinput, but games still only see the Xinput, so they display the Xbox 360 or Xbox One controller. With Steam, it uses the SIAPI or Steam Input API and has a greater feature set than Xinput. This can allow games to show the DualShock 4 in games and either allow you to switch to a PlayStation button prompt either manually or automatically. However, games would need to be programmed with the DualShock 4 (and DualSens) in mind.

If a game doesn’t already include the DualShock/DualSense control and button scheme, it simply won’t give you the option in-game. Meaning you’ll be able to use the controller. Still, you’ll have to mentally establish the differences between the Xbox controller buttons and the PlayStation buttons, which isn’t something that everyone wants to do or can do. There are currently many games, such as Death Stranding, No Man’s Sky, and Horizon Zero Dawn, that already support SIAPI. The great thing about SIAPI is if the game supports it and adheres to Steam’s requirements, then the DualSense will work with no additional assistance required from the developer. Again, SIAPI is some powerful stuff.

While others provide the ability to change the controller mappings, other games such as Resident Evil (2/3) depend on modders to create mods to do this.

Hopefully, this explanation makes things less confusing when using the DualSense on PC with DS4Windows or Steam. I’m still hopeful we’ll get full support from Sony and that developers will start adding support for the controller in upcoming games. Especially since Steam has shown that the DualShock 4 and DualSense controller adaption rate has been on the rise.

    QJoyPad

QJoyPad is a free and open source graphical application that allows you to map keyboard and mouse events to a game controller. In simple terms, a Linux game that doesn’t support any or your particular game controller can be made to work with a gamepad using QJoyPad.

Some of the main features of QJoyPad are:

    • Multiple profiles making it easier to manage and switch mappings
    • “Turbo” or “Rapid Fire” button mode
    • Sticky mode for simulating “Press and Hold” behavior
    • Automatically detects gamepad buttons and axes
    • Supports controlling mouse via joysticks
    • Comes with full command line support for those who prefer CLI
    • Support for setting sensitivity of joysticks
    • Comes with many predefined algorithms for controlling mouse cursor sensitivity and acceleration
    • Quick set mode that allows you to detect and set individual keys at the same time

To install QJoyPad in Ubuntu, run the following command:

Run command below to launch QJoyPad (or use application launcher):

QJoyPad starts minimized to system tray, so you may not see any GUI window until you click on its panel applet. On some desktop environments, system tray is shown but nothing happens when you click on its menu items. To fix this issue, you have to run QJoyPad in non-system-tray mode by running command below:

Running QJoyPad without system tray will create a small window containing nothing but icon of the app. If you right click on this icon, all the menu options that are available in the system tray will become visible.

How to remap xbox playstation and other controller buttons in steam

Note that some of the QJoyPad options may not work unless you connect a game controller. To see the gamepad mapping window, double click on the icon shown in the screenshot above.

How to remap xbox playstation and other controller buttons in steam

For QJoyPad mappings to work in a game or app, you will have to keep it running. Be careful not to accidentally close the small window with gamepad icon.

    SDL2 Gamepad Tool

SDL2 Gamepad Tool is a free and open source app that allows you to configure game controller buttons using an easy to use graphical interface. As the name suggests, it only works for games that use SDL2 API for controller support (most native Linux games).

Using gamepad mapping database available here, it automatically configures mapping for most controllers. However if your game controller mappings are not shown in the app, you can create new mappings for it by clicking on “Create a New Mapping” button. You can also change pre-defined mappings for any controller using the same process.

Note that this app is not a keyboard-to-joypad mapping utility. It just creates SDL compatible mappings for gamepads so that games using SDL API can automatically pick them.

You can download SDL2 gamepad tool from here.

How to remap xbox playstation and other controller buttons in steam

Once you are satisfied with the mappings, there are two methods you can use to enable them for games. Click on “Set Mapping as Environment Variable” to set these mappings system wide for all games.

The other method is to use these mappings on per game basis. Click on “Copy Mapping String” button then run a command in the following format:

For example, the mapping command on my system looks like this:

    SC Controller

SC Controller is a GTK3 application that allows you to create button mappings for Steam Controller, DualShock 4 gamepad, Xbox controller, and other similar gamepads. The main highlight of this app is its ability to configure advanced gamepad mappings that are equivalent to Steam client’s built-in configuration tool. In simple terms, SC Controller’s user mode driver / GUI app enables configuring gamepads without having a need to install Steam client (no need to have a Steam account as well). Just like QjoyPad, this app allows you to map keyboard and mouse events to a game controller.

Other useful features of SC Controller:

    • Gyroscope configuration support
    • Rapid fire or turbo mode functionality
    • Supports multiple gamepad profiles
    • Vibration / Rumble support
    • Macros and controller emulation
    • Supports on screen keyboard

SC Controller AppImage for Linux distributions can be downloaded from here. Mark the file executable and run it in a terminal or double click the file to start customizing gamepad mappings.

Note that for some reason, SC Controller fails to detect my DualShock 4 controller unless I run it with root access. Most probably because it fails to read input events from the gamepad. A custom udev rule can possibly fix this issue but explaining it here is beyond the scope of this article. If you are having gamepad detection problems with this app, try running it as root.

    Conclusion

These are a few apps that can be used to create mappings for your game controller. Most of the well-known game controller brands work out of the box on Linux these days. However unlike console games, PC games rarely provide an option to remap gamepads. The apps mentioned above are especially useful when you are using a generic controller, when you want to alter the layout of existing button mappings, or when you want to map keyboard and mouse events to a game controller.

Same issue. I downloaded a 1.8 Gb update and my controls got all bugged. Triggers are reversed and I can no longer look up or down. Tried fiddling with controls and disconnected and reconnected the controller. I am currently reinstalling the game to see if that works. I use An Xbox One controller by the way.

    Update: It did not work.

I came here from playing this game on my xbox one S through the 1 dollar Christmas game pass thing so I essentially played for free and loved it, then found out about Subzero so I wanted to try to help and bought the two in the bundle. It’s been a long long time since I’ve found a game I actually enjoy so I really hope more people find out about these games and give them a chance.

Anyways.. When I first jumped into the game I had this same issue. I’m trying to put out the fire with the extinguisher in the escape pod and the triggers are swapped it seems. By time I finally figured it out I had burned to death. …

Hey guys, created an account just to add that I believe I’ve found a workaround for now that works for my Xbox One Controller as this was bugging me out and I could barely play the game without frustration. Seems to solve the reversed triggers at least. Here are the steps I took as I am playing the game from the Epic Store(free giveaway).

    1. Add the game as a Non-Steam Game to your Steam Library. (You use the Subnautica.exe from your installation folder)
    2. If playing from the Epic Store you will need to add to Launch Options.
    3. Right click your Subnautica icon, go to properties and click “Set Launch Options”
    4. add “-EpicPortal” without the quotes as a launch option so that Steam knows to launch game from Epic Store.
    5. Go into Steam settings – Controller settings and make sure you have both “Xbox Configuration Support” and “Generic Gamepad Configuration Support” checked.
    6. You may or may not need to launch game from Big Picture Mode – not certain but I use that from my couch when playing.
    6. Launch game thru Steam.
    7. Enjoy!

Please let me know if this works out for you or if the instructions need to be more clear. I can finally get back to exploring from my couch without the wonky triggers reversed. Hope this helps.

Tried the game for the first time last night, triggers worked normally.

Started up again tonight, and the triggers are reversed, using an XBox One wireless controller. Tested out with M&KB and the trigger buttons on the mouse are also backwards. instead of left click using the equipped item, it was right click. So not something specific to controllers, it seems.

I also had the same problem with my LT and RT buttons being reversed. I followed your manual and it worked!

Dear Subnautica-Devs, can you guys please fix this bug. It would be so great because i really love this game and all the great work and ideas you all put into it!

Please get it fixed for the community!

PS: 90% of my games are on Steam. I bought this game and many others extra in the epic-store to support the devs!

How to make Bandai Namco’s action-focused RPG feel more like an action game

For years, Bandai Namco’s Tales games have largely been role-playing games with an action bent. Tales of Arise , out now for PlayStation, Xbox, and PC, is as close to a pure action game as ever, thanks to a streamlined battle system and a switch on the development end to the Unreal engine . It rules. Only problem? The controls don’t exactly hold up.

By default, Tales of Arise’s combat button layout is quite odd. On PlayStation, where I’ve been playing, the basic attack is bound to R1, kinda like last year’s middling Godfall. Dodging is on R2, which: absolutely not. Your three Artes (that’s the game’s lingo for “special attacks”) are mapped to Triangle, Square, and X. Jumping is on Circle.

    I know. It’s madness.

The good news is you can shake up the combat controls as you see fit. First, head to the System menu, then click on “settings” and navigate down to “button bindings.”

I put my three Artes on Triangle, R1, and R2. I moved dodge to Circle. I put jump on X (as the gods intended). And I put the basic attack button on Square.

With this setup, Tales of Arise feels far more like the bread-and-butter classic action game it’s trying to be. I’ve personally always felt that tapping Square to launch a combo of attacks feels more natural than a shoulder button. I tend to play as the protagonist Alphen, who has several stabby attacks in his moveset, which I tend to map to Triangle. (Maybe it’s the shape, but Triangle just feels like a thrust attack, y’know?)

But this remap is also a matter of efficiency. Partway through the game, you’ll unlock a high-powered ability that has you hold down two Artes buttons at the same time. For me, I find it far easier to hold down R1 and R2 than two face buttons.

    Select products
HP has a number of discounts ranging from their general use laptops to their desktops and laptops built for PC gaming.

And sure, to be fair, I’ve long railed against control schemes that married attack moves to the shoulder buttons; just last year, two of Ubisoft’s map games—Assassin’s Creed Valhalla and the ridiculously named but genuinely terrific Immortals Fenyx Rising— featured such default button layouts . For both, I messed with the scheme so most actions were married to the face buttons.

So, yeah, maybe this is all just a matter or preference. Maybe I’m too quick to bounce off what’s recently become the bog-standard button layout for action games, too reluctant to give it a chance. Maybe I’m the truly broken one, and you all have reformed to the new ways of the shoulder button, clicking R1-R1-R1-R1-R1 into the dark of the night, not a care in the world. Maybe it’s my thinking that needs to be remapped.

The PlayStation 4 controller has been around for a few years now and it’s still one of the top gaming controllers on the market. One of its features is the ability to remap buttons, which can come in handy if you’re playing a game that doesn’t support certain button layouts. However, what do you do when your PS button isn’t working?

Every PS4 owner has had that moment where they are playing their favorite game and the PS button on their controller just stops working. This can be incredibly frustrating, especially if you’re in the middle of a battle or close to completing your level.

Luckily, there is a solution. In some cases, the PS button works fine but when you press it to turn on the DualShock 4 controller, it won’t work and the system won’t respond to it.

So, what are the reasons why the PS button not working and how to fix that? That’s what you’re going to learn through the lines.

Why PS4 Controller’s PS Button Not Working

The possible reasons for PlayStation Controller PS button to not work are:

    • the PS4 system is not properly responding to the signals PS button makes, or maybe the signals are weak because the controller might be out of battery power or there are some electrical circuit shorts happening inside.
    • The controller firmware driver might have been corrupted or it has compatibility issues with other drivers. this happens when the PS4 database is corrupted or even when the PS4 system files are corrupted. As a result, some of buttons on PS4 controller won’t work properly, including the PS button.
    • Some liquid was poured on the PS button and left for some time, so now there’s rust in it that blocks its functionality. There are also various sources of liquids (paint thinner etc.) that can cause the PS button to not work. So, make sure about this point as many users overlook it.
    • The controller might be broken and damaged because it fell on the ground and hit some hard surface;
    • If you’re connecting the controller via USB, there might be an issue with the USB connection; either the cable is damaged or the PS4 USB port is malfunctioning.
    • Some object was inserted in-between PS button’s contact points, which causes a short electrical circuit (it may have happened when you were cleaning your DualShock 4 Controller). Now there is a need to open the PS button and clean it up.
    • The battery might be dead or malfunctioning, and as a result the PS button isn’t receiving enough power; you should change it in this case or re-charge your controller if your PS button is still not working after changing the battery.
    • You can use a product called “Deoxit” (available on Amazon) which helps with some of these tasks.

How to Fix A not-working PS Button

There are a few things you can do to fix a PS4 controller button that’s not working.

The first thing you want to do is to connect your DualShock 4 controller via USB instead of Bluetooth and check whether the PS button works or not. If not, check the cable connecting the controller to your console. If it appears damaged in any way, replace it with a new cable. Otherwise, if the PS button does work here, it means the controller’s battery is weak and declining, and you have to replace it.

Secondly, make sure there are no obstructions between the controller and your console like furniture or walls.

Lastly, try restarting your PS4 system by turning off both devices, then turn them back on again after 30 seconds and see if that fixes the issue.

Now, if none of these worked, try the methods below until you find your way to fix the inworking PS button.

    1. Verify the PS4 USB port is actually working

If the PS button on your controller isn’t working, first make sure that the USB connector is properly inserts inside the USB port and in a good contact. There’s a chance it may not be completely inserted or jammed so try using something like a bobby pin to push it into place (be careful!). If it doesn’t work still, try the tips in this article in order to fix an inworking PS4 USB port.

If you’re still having troubles with the PS button, scroll down for additional solutions. We will assume here that the PS4 USB port is working properly and you have no issue with the USB connection (i.e. the USB cable is intact and working fine).

    2. Cleaning the PS4 Controller

Sometimes when you press on PS button it might seem as if nothing is happening. This can be because of excess grease that has accumulated over time and needs to be cleaned off first before proceeding with a new one.

If you’ve tried cleaning the outer surface around the PS button and it’s still doesn’t work, there’s a good chance that dirt has gotten inside of it. You need to open the controller’s case and use rubbing alcohol to clean off any debris on or near the PS button, especially if you can see an accumulation around or underneath it.

*Note: be sure not to use too much pressure when cleaning the button or you can accidentally damage it.

**Note: if alcohol is not available, try using a small amount of dish soap and water on a q-tip to clean any dirt off around the PS button. Just make sure that there’s no other liquid inside your controller before powering it back up!

    3. Rebuild the PS4 database

Sometimes you will need to rebuild the PS4 database on your console. The reason for this is because when games are installed and uninstalled, it can create a corrupt file in the system that needs to be deleted before it becomes an issue. One of the issues might be a conflict with some system files that result into malfunctioning of a hardware driver.

There are other significant benefits of rebuilding the PS4 database. To learn about the importance of rebuilding PS4 database, click here.

    4. Full Initialize PS4 from Safe Mode

The PS button might not be working because there’s a sort of corruption in the system data that prevents the controller’s driver from functioning properly. In this case, the best thing you can do is to initialize the PS4 and reinstall PS4 system software from scratch.

This process will eliminate any potential issue caused by the system software.

    5. Replace the PS4 controller

If nothing works at all with you, the PS button might be damaged and thus you need to replace the whole controller. This is the last resort. You can though take it to a technician to check whether it can be repaired or not. This might save you some bucks instead of buying a new controller.

    Conclusion

The PS button might get not working for several reasons, and fixing it depends on the reason that causes this issue. If you have a problem with the PS button then it might need to be repaired or replaced, while if there is no PS button response at all then maybe the controller needs to be restarted or reset. By following the steps in this article one can hopefully get their buttons work properly again unless there’s a serious damage taking place.

    What to Know

    • Connect your controller to your PC. A cable isn’t included with PS5, and you will need Bluetooth on your PC to connect wirelessly.
    • Open Steam’s Big Picture mode at the top-right of the Steam client. Click the Settings cog; then click Controller Settings.
    • What your controller appears as isn’t important. Click your controller and then Define Layout to check and set up controls.

The good news for PC gamers is that Sony’s new Dualsense controller for PS5 works out of the box with Steam. This article explains how to use your PS5 controller with your PC.

How to Connect a PS5 Controller to your PC

If you have a USB-A to USB-C cable lying around, or if your computer supports USB-C directly, you can simply plug in your PS5 controller and be ready to use it on Steam. If you don’t want to use a cable or don’t have one, you can connect your controller to your PC via bluetooth.

On a Windows 10 PC that’s Bluetooth enabled, this process is easy.

Turn off your PS5 and disconnect your controller.

On your PC, open Start Menu > Settings > Devices > Add Bluetooth or other device.

How to remap xbox playstation and other controller buttons in steam

On your PS5 controller, hold down the PlayStation and Create buttons to enter pairing mode.

In the Add a device window on your PC, select Bluetooth, and then select the controller that pops up. Windows will likely recognize your controller as some kind of generic gamepad, which isn’t an issue.

How to remap xbox playstation and other controller buttons in steam

Not all computers come packaged with Bluetooth. If you want to use your controller wirelessly but don’t have Bluetooth, adding Bluetooth to your computer is surprisingly easy.

How to Use a PS5 Controller on Steam

Once connected, your controller is ready for Steam.

Open Steam’s Big Picture mode, located at the top-right of the Steam client.

Select the Settings cog; then select Controller Settings.

How to remap xbox playstation and other controller buttons in steam

Your controller will appear under Detected Controllers; however, it may be recognized as an Xbox controller, a generic gamepad, or a DualShock 4 controller. Select your controller, and click Define Layout to make sure all your button bindings are correct.

How to remap xbox playstation and other controller buttons in steam

If you’re having trouble getting Steam to detect your PS5 controller, try enrolling in Steam’s latest beta, which adds initial PS5 controller support. From your Steam client, open Steam > Settings > Account and enroll in the latest beta. Then return to Controller Settings.

How to remap xbox playstation and other controller buttons in steam

It’s likely more functionality will come to the PS5 controller when Steam’s latest update comes out of beta, but Steam itself can’t support all the features of the controller. Advanced haptic feedback and adaptive triggers require individualized support, as they are implemented on a per-game basis.

How to remap xbox playstation and other controller buttons in steamReconfiguring the buttons on an PS4 or Xbox game controller connected to an iPad or iPhone is easy. Here’s how.
    Graphic: Cult of Mac

Serious gaming on your iPad or iPhone gets better with an external Xbox or PlayStation controller instead of a touchscreen. And Apple recently improved the experience even more by allowing you to reconfigure the buttons on your game controller.

Here’s how to customize what those all-important buttons do.

Connect a game controller your iPad or iPhone

First off, it’s critical to know that can use some wireless Xbox and PlayStation controllers with your Apple handset or tablet. And iOS 14/iPadOS 14 brought support for additional controllers. More could be on the way, too.

Just connect the Bluetooth controller to your iPad or iPad like you would a keyboard or a mouse. And then all you need to do is load a game that supports controllers — almost everything in Apple Arcade does, and there are plenty of others.

Your controller must be connected to your device while you’re reconfiguring the buttons.

How to reconfigure game controller buttons on iOS or iPadOS

To enjoy a game, and play it well, using the controller has to be seamless. Running toward a cliff then hitting the Fire button instead of Jump can be a disaster. And people who spend a lot of time gaming get accustomed to having the basic controls in certain positions. It’s irritating when a game, by default, puts them somewhere else.

Speaking for myself, I prefer to have the bottom-most button under my right thumb be for Attack. Whether it’s shooting or swinging a sword. Whatever. But plenty of games instead dedicate the left-most button for Attack. In Oceanhorn 2 for example, that means I have a tendency to run up to my enemies and, rather than striking with my sword, I roll past them. This all because the buttons aren’t configured the way I like them.

iOS 14 and iPadOS 14 makes changing this easy. Use Bluetooth to connect the controller you’ll use. For me, that’s a Sony DualShock 4, but it works for some Xbox controllers too. Then, on your iPhone or iPad, go to Settings > General > Game Controller > Customizations. Then toggle Enable Customizations.

How to remap xbox playstation and other controller buttons in steam Choose which button you want to reconfigure.
    Screenshot: Ed Hardy/Cult of Mac

On this screen, you can reconfigure almost any button. I can, for example, easily switch the Cross button and the Square button. I can make the DualShock 4’s touchpad replace the right joystick. There are so many options, depending on what you prefer. Swap the left and right joysticks if you want. Or invert the joysticks. In short, you an easily set the controller up as you like it.

Setting up custom configurations for individual games

Just be aware that the changes you make are often universal. If you switch the A and X buttons on one game, then the same is true for every other one.

One solution is to toggle off the Enable Customizations switch you turned on earlier when you’re done playing the game you’ve made the changes for. But there’s another, better solution… too bad it’s only for some titles.

Some games let you set up a custom configuration only for them. All the ones I have that support this are part of Apple Arcade, but that could well be because most of the games I have on my iPad are part of Apple’s subscription gaming service.

Start by going to Settings > General > Game Controller > Customizations. Make sure you activate Enable Customizations, then scroll to the bottom of the screen to see the App Customization section. Tap on Add App.

This opens a window that displays all the games that support this feature. Tap on one, and it appears back on the Customizations page.

From there, tap on the game’s name to open a window where you can reconfigure the buttons for just this game. None of the changes you make back on the main Customizations page will apply to this game, and vice versa.

It’s the holidays with a pandemic going on, so you might be planning to dedicate the next couple weeks to gaming. If so, this trick might be just what you need to make the time more enjoyable.

And why not hook a big screen to your iPad or iPhone for even more gaming fun.

Steam is currently the best platform on PC for fighting games, and with the growing size of the PC scene, the Hit Box player base, and popularity of online play, it is important our players can compete. Typically the Hit Box will work right after you plug it in, but some people may run into particular issues.

This post is to help with general PC and Steam specific troubleshooting, as well as provide help using Steam’s Button Mapping.

This information is meant for Hit Boxes purchased on or after June 2016. If you have a version purchased before this time period, the instructions may be slightly different than what is stated. If you run into any issues, please email us for trouble-shooting help: [email protected]

    Testing with Joy.cpl

The first thing to do is to test if your controller is being read by your PC. To do this, open up joy.cpl on your computer.

How to remap xbox playstation and other controller buttons in steam

Next, plug in your Hit Box to your PC. It should pop up in the window, and it should say “Controller (XBOX 360 For Windows).” If it does not say this, please update your Hit Box using the firmware from our downloads page. [If you have a Hit Box version older than June 2016, it will show up as something else.]

If your Hit Box is not showing up in the window, try these in order:

    • unplug and plug your Hit Box back in
    • use another USB port

Once you have that open, you should see your controller being read at the bottom of the settings options. If your controller was not previously working with the settings that you currently have on, turn them all off – this is to prevent Steam interfering with compatibility. If the controller is still not working, then specifically select the “Xbox Configuration Support” option.

    Button Mappings on Steam

[Note: As of May 17, 2022 you cannot map the buttons of XBOX or XBOX 360 controllers on Steam. In order to take advantage of Steam’s button remapping, boot your Hit Box into a different mode: PC Modes on Hit Box.]

If you wish to remap your buttons, you can use Steam’s remapping feature. Simply, click on the controller you wish to edit then select “Define Layout.”

Next you will be put into a menu that looks like the image below. Select what output you want from the list in the left column under “Command,” then press which button on the Hit Box you want to use for that output.

If you wish to map additional actions – such as L3/R3 for training mode shortcuts in Street Fighter V – we recommend booting your Hit Box into PS4 Mode and mapping the two left-most buttons on the top end of the Hit Box to additional bind. For an in-depth process of this, please use our “Using Steam to get SFV Training Reset on Hit Box.”
