How to remove old configuration files from your iphone or ipad

How to remove old configuration files from your iphone or ipad

Back in March 2013, security firm Skycure found that some configuration profiles on iOS pose a major security vulnerability because they use root certificates that might allow harmful software to bypass Apple’s sandboxing rules and install on your iPhone, iPod touch or iPad.

Apple has since removed a few apps from the App Store that were found to install root certificates which could allow monitoring of data.

Still, the fact remains that configuration profiles could be exploited to compromise SSL/TLS security solutions. If you have a configuration profile installed on your device that’s no longer use by apps, you should delete it in order to make sure your data remains protected.

In this tutorial, we’re going to demonstrate how easy it is to delete iOS configuration profiles that are no longer needed, thereby increasing your security.

A configuration profile is a tiny file that stores certain settings that override settings on your device. Organizational settings and accounts are typically delivered in iOS configuration profiles.

For instance, IT administrators in enterprise environments—but not just them—commonly use configuration profiles to sign and deploy custom software and settings on corporate devices.

How to delete iOS configuration profiles

Step 1: Open Settings on your iOS device.

Step 2: Go to the section General → Profiles & Device Management, or Settings → General → Profile.

Step 3: Tap on a configuration profile you would like to remove from your iOS device.

I was a beta tester for an app which came with a Crashlytics configuration profile. Having recently deleted that app, I’m about to remove its configuration profile.

Step 4: Tap Remove Profile at the bottom of the configuration profile screen.

Step 5: Enter your passcode, if required.

Step 6: Confirm that you would like to remove the selected configuration profile from your device by tapping Remove. When you delete a profile, all of the settings and accounts associated with the profile are also removed.

Step 7: It is always a good idea to restart your iOS device after removing a profile.

If you first delete an app from your iOS device which came with a configuration profile, take this extra step and delete the app’s profile to improve your security.

As the saying goes, better safe than sorry.

You can also delete the app right from its configuration profile screen. For instance, I signed up to beta-test Vine, which requires a configuration profile from Twitter in order to access beta builds.

If you’re unsure which apps use any given configuration profile installed on your device, just tap on it to get to the details screen.

As the screenshot top of post attests, the Twitter profile is used by the Vine Beta app. I can remove both the profile and the app, without going back to the Home screen, by tapping the Delete App button.

In addition to custom enterprise software and apps in beta, configuration profiles may also be required by some websites, VPN apps, custom network settings, carriers and more.

The adventurous types may consider creating a custom configuration profile with all of their custom settings, apps, Home screens, wallpapers and more for over-the-air deployment to any iOS device, including the new Apple TV.

Just grab the official Apple Configurator utility, a free download in the Mac App Store, to get started.

Supervision or supervised mode is a special mode for schools and companies to manage iOS devices they own. Supervision gives administrators better control over devices and makes it easier for them to monitor the device compliance with the organization’s policies and regulations.

By default, iOS devices are not supervised but administrators can turn on the supervision when setting up a new device using Apple Configurator or Apple Business/School Manager.

How to tell if an iPad or iPhone is supervised?

On the device, go to Settings > General > About. The device is supervised if you see a text saying “This iPad/iPhone is supervised and managed by (company name)”.

Miradore also shows which devices are supervised, on the Devices page.

How to disable supervision on an iPhone or iPad?

In most cases, only the institution which owns the device can turn off the supervised mode.

Unenrolling or retiring devices from Miradore does not make them unsupervised.

The supervised mode can be removed by resetting/wiping the device to factory settings (Erase all content and settings) if the supervised mode was enabled using Apple Configurator.

If the device is still supervised after a factory reset, then it has been automatically enrolled and supervised using Apple Business Manager. In this case, you will need to do some configuration changes on Miradore and Apple Business/School Manager portal:

  • Go to Enrollment > Apple DEP page on Miradore.
  • Select the device(s) you want to unsupervise and use the Actions > Remove enrollment profile.

  • I was wondering if anyone has come across this or has any suggestions how to resolve it.

I’ve got a VPN Connection showing in my Settings screen, it was originally installed using a configuration utility file. When I go to Settings > General > VPN the configuration is listed, however when I select the blue arrow I have no option to delete the VPN. When I go Settings > General > Profile I get the message ‘No profiles are currently installed’ so I can not remove it this way either.

I am running iOS 6.0.1 on a 4th Gen iPad, which I restored from a backup of my 1st Gen iPad. I have also tried Reset Network Settings and Reset All Settings, neither of which have removed the offending VPN Configuration. The only other thing I can think of doing is a factory restore without restoring from a back up, but I want to avoid this as I don’t want to lose application data.

Any help/suggestions would really be appreciated

How to delete old iPhone and iPad backups and save gigabytes of space on your hard drive.

Unless you’re a jailbreaker, you’ve likely never dealt with .ipsw files, and likely will never have to. That doesn’t stop iTunes from saving them on your hard drive and taking upwards of 2 GB (or more, depending on how much data was on your iPhone when it was backed up).

Deleting these old iPhone back-ups .ipsw files is a breeze in Windows and OS X. First I’ll show ya how to do it for Windows then I’ll review the steps for Mac OS X.

    Windows Users

The conventional way to do this is through iTunes.

Click Edit > Preferences… and Click the Devices tab. There, you’ll see a list of your backups which can be deleted with the click of a button.

How to remove old configuration files from your iphone or ipad

But as is often the case, this list isn’t entirely inclusive—there could be other iPhone backups lurking on your hard drive. The newer versions of iTunes are good about keeping track of these, but if you’re a longtime iPhone user, there are likely to be some strays. Use the following steps to sniff them out and eliminate them.

    Step 1 – Navigate to C:\Users\[your user name]\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes.

How to remove old configuration files from your iphone or ipad

Note: The original tipster from Reddit advises you to navigate to C:\Documents and Settings\User Name\Application Data\iTunes, but this may not work if you’re running Windows 7—you’ll just get a “Location is not available” alert that reads “C:\Documents and Settings\ is not accessible. Access is denied.” That’s because that folder is just a junction point that redirects to C:\Users\[your user name]\. It’s used by the system and isn’t meant for users to tinker with.

Step 2 – Look for any .ipsw files. They may be in a subfolder called iPhone Software Updates or iPad Software Updates or iPod Software Updates. Essentially, any device you have running iOS may have a .ipsw file floating around. You can delete them safely.

How to remove old configuration files from your iphone or ipad

Step 3 – Also, look for any .ipsw files in C:\Users\[your user name]\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync.

On my computer, I had a Backup subfolder in MobileSync that was almost 500 MB and hadn’t been modified for five months. I deleted it safely.

How to remove old configuration files from your iphone or ipad

Step 4 – You can also navigate to C:\Users\All Users\Apple Computer\Installer Cache and delete whatever’s in there with impunity. For me, there wasn’t much there, but it did clear up about 30 MB.

How to remove old configuration files from your iphone or ipad

    For Mac OS X Users

You can find .ipsw files and other iTunes clutter in the

Library/iTunes folder. Launch Finder and Click your Username on the left. Then, choose Library > iTunes.

How to remove old configuration files from your iphone or ipad

    Conclusion

You can delete these backups and temporary files without affecting your iTunes library or your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch. But remember: you are deleting backups here. Only do this if you’re sure you don’t need them anymore. I recommend backing up your iPhone or iPad right after completing the above steps. That way, you’ll know which backup is a keeper (and it’ll show up in the iTunes preferences pane).

    What is MDM

Mobile device management (MDM for short) is a method of distributing data and settings to the iPhone, iPad, and Mac devices. It can come with all Apple devices. MDM makes it easier to manage, monitor, and support devices within an organization.

    MDM’s main features

The primary motive behind the use of iPad device management software is not just precautionary, though. It speeds up the process of getting iOS devices into the hands of users, fully configured, and preloaded with all the necessary applications, settings, and user permissions. Whether for a thousand or 10 thousand students, the scalable nature of the tools keeps everything manageable.

How does MDM work on school iPad

The reason for MDM being on school iPad is not farfetched; schools need to maintain a degree of control over all devices given to their students. The IT departments and even teachers have more control over how students use technology in class.

As you might already suspect, students use their devices to access a lot of things, especially things private to them. As a way of minimizing this, the school then links their mobile device to mobile device management software and use it for remote monitoring of their activities and restrict activities on the device. With MDM, teachers even can see all students’ screens in real-time, push URLs to student devices, lock student screens, and also screen mirroring between student, teacher, and classroom displays.

Why do you need to remove MDM

However, if you have already graduated from school, or if you have bought a second-hand iPad with school MDM on it, then it’s extremely important to delete device management on school iPad. Check on this article to know more about MDM possible risks:

Messages on the iPhone and iPad can grow to take up considerable storage space over time, especially for users who frequently send and receive multimedia on the iPhone. Every photo taken with an iPhone camera can easily consume 4MB, and movies take up even more space, and it’s not uncommon for an iPhone user to eventually get multiple GB of messages and attachments. For users who don’t want to manage their own messages by deleting large messages, attached files, or old conversations, modern iOS versions have an option that automatically deletes old messages from iPhone or iPad.

This is a great feature, but know that this completely deletes old messages from iOS, and they are also not available as a backup. That’s why you only want to do this if you’re absolutely sure you don’t want to access and read older messages on your iPhone. Of course, this feature is also available on the iPad and iPod touch, but it’s probably more popular with iPhone users, so the focus.

How to turn on automatic deletion of old messages on iPhone and iPad

By default, this feature is turned off, which means that all your messages are kept on your device until they are deleted manually. Only change this setting if you are sure you want to delete old messages and their media attachments automatically.

    1. Open the Settings app on iOS and go to Messaging
    2. In Message settings, scroll down until you see “Keep messages” and tap it
    3. Choose your preferred option: 30 days, 1 year or forever (default)

If you have messages older than the time you selected, you will see a new screen to confirm the deletion of the old message. Under “Delete older messages?” Confirm that you want to delete all messages older than the specified date and any photos, sounds, or videos attached to them.

When this setting is turned on, the rest is processed automatically. As soon as a certain message and / or message attachment expires in 30 days or 1 year, it is completely removed from the device.

It’s worth noting that this is completely different from iOS’s Auto Video Removal feature, which is turned ON by default for both voice and video messages, a feature that causes multimedia content to expire significantly faster in iOS Messages. However, these two features can be used simultaneously.

While this can be a great way to manage outlandish Messages storage (which sometimes appears as part of the huge “Other” storage in iTunes when your iOS device is connected), individuals should also enjoy this feature as it increases the security level for iPhone or iPad by deleting old conversations .

If you decide you don’t like this, you can always change this setting and return to the iOS default setting of “Never” to stop automatic message deletion.

Company-provided devices are sometimes monitored and managed by the company superiors through a system called MDM.

MDM or mobile device management is a system that companies and educational institutions use to protect their data by monitoring, managing, and enhancing security on all company-provided iOS devices.

This results in a limitation of the features you can use on your device, which in turn prevents you from doing certain things such as installing new apps and the like.

Many users use iBackupBot to remove the MDM lock. In this guide, let’s talk about how it can help you remove MDM.

    What is iBackupBot?

iBackupBot is a multi-functional tool that can do a lot of things on your Apple device.

It can help you export, edit, and browse files that you have backed up on iTunes, and easily restore these files and settings whenever you need them.

This is especially useful for transferring the settings from your old device to your newly purchased iOS device.

How to Use iBackupBot to Remove MDM

iBackupBot can bypass MDM on your device, but you must first reset your device. Go to Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings.

Also, make sure to back up all your files beforehand since resetting deletes all the files on your device.

Once that is done, you can now remove MDM using iBackupBot. Follow these steps:

    1. First, head to their website and install the iBackupBot app onto your PC.
    2. Next, click on Backup Now.
    3. Once done, navigate to the Backups list found at the left part of the interface. Click on System Files.
    4. A drop down list of folders should appear. Click on the SysSharedContainerDomain-systemgroup.com.apple.configurationprofiles folder.
    5. Now, the contents of the folder should be displayed at the right side of the interface. Look for the file MDM.plist and delete it.
    6. After that, navigate back to the Backups list and right-click on your device’s name.
    7. Finally, click on Restore to device.

After following these steps, your device will not be restricted anymore and you will be able to use it however you want.

    Pros and Cons of iBackupBot

As mentioned earlier, you can use iBackupBot to:

    1. Backup files for future use.
    2. Transfer files from your iPhone to other Apple devices.
    3. View the contents and files found on your device through your computer.
    4. The software is also compatible with Windows 10/8/7/XP/Vista and macOS 11.
    1. The software does not have a user-friendly interface and the process is a bit complicated for beginners to follow.
    2. One misstep will result in backup issues.
    3. Too much technical jargon is involved. Prior knowledge is needed to perform the process.
    4. Errors and breakdowns are likely to happen during and after the process.

Best Alternative to iBackupBot to Bypass MDM:

If you feel that iBackupBot doesn’t suit you very well, there is one alternative that we recommend you try, an app called Unlockit.

Similar to iBackupBot, it is also a multifunctional tool that offers the following features:

    1. Bypass Mobile Device Management.
    2. Unlock screen time passcode.
    3. Remove iTunes Backup Encryption Settings on your device.
    4. Can use it on all iOS devices, even those with the latest versions iOS 15 installed.
    5. The process is quick and simple, so it won’t take an expert to use it.

If you’re convinced, then here’s how to use Unlockit to bypass MDM:

Step 1. First off, download and install Unlockit.

Before moving on to the bypassing process, hard reset your iPad. You might want to back up your files before doing this as a hard reset will erase all your files.

After that, reboot your iPad and set up the necessary settings such as time, country and Wi-Fi until you reach the MDM screen.

Step 2. Now go back to your PC and launch the Unlockit app. The interface should show you six options on the screen. Click on Bypass MDM Lock.

Step 3. Next, connect your iPad to your PC using a USB cable.

Step 4. Now, click on Start.

Step 5. After the process is completed, click on Done to confirm.

How to remove old configuration files from your iphone or ipad

You will only need to wait a bit for the process to be completed. However, you will need to purchase the app to use it.

Unlockit is also a trustworthy alternative to 3uTools, iKey MDM Bypass, and iActivate MDM Bypass.

It’s available at $29.95 per month for short-term users, or at $49.95 for a lifetime plan.

    Conclusion

iBackupBot is a software that allows you to not only backup files from your Apple device, but also bypass MDM locks.

However, it carries a lot of downsides such as having a complicated process and frequent errors. To avoid these complications, we recommend that you try Unlockit instead.

Unlockit is a multi-functional app with a user-friendly interface that can do what iBackupBot can, but for a price. It may be a paid software but the features that it offers make paying for it worthwhile.

If you have any comments, questions or queries about iBackupBot and Unlockit, feel free to shoot us a comment down below.

We pay a lot of money for our iPhones, and they’re usually worth it — however, no matter how much we spend, we always seem to run out of storage space far too soon.

There are many ways to clear up space on your iPhone to make sure you have room for all the photos and apps you need. In fact, we have an entire article on the topic: “How to free up space on an iPhone that’s running out of storage.”

One method not discussed in that article, however, is how to delete app data on your iPhone. App data consists of all the various settings and documents that an app creates as you’re using it, and depending on the app, can take up a sizable amount of data.

Clearing app data can help you reclaim space you need. Here’s how to do it.

Check out the products mentioned in this article:

iPhone 11 (From $699.99 at Best Buy)

How to delete app data on your iPhone

First, see which of your apps is taking up the most space.

    1. Launch the Settings app.

    2. Tap “General,” and then “iPhone Storage.”

On that screen, you can scroll down to see how much space each of your apps is using. If you notice that an app or two are taking up a lot of space but you rarely use them, it’s a good idea to delete that app’s data.

And as it happens, with most apps, you can delete an app’s data by just deleting the app. With a few apps, like Messages, your photo library, and your email, you can delete individual files to save space. For most apps, however, just follow these steps.

    1. From the iPhone Storage screen, tap on any app you wish to delete.

    2. Tap “Delete App” to remove it.

On your iPhone’s home screen, you can also hold a finger on an app icon and then tap the X icon that pops up to delete it. Or, if you’re using iOS 13, tap and hold an app icon, select “Rearrange Apps,” and then tap the X that pops up.

    3. If you still want to use an app, just launch the App Store and reinstall the app you just deleted.

When you connect your iPhone or iPad to iTunes on Mac or Windows, and choose to trust that computer, a pairing record is created that maintains that trust for future connections. There’s a report going around that claims that if someone takes physical possession of your device and your computer, they can steal those pairing records and use them to retrieve your personal information and/or enable remote logging. If they don’t have your computer, it’s also claimed they can try and generate a pairing record by tricking you into connecting to a compromised accessory (juice jacking), like a dock, and/or by using mobile device management (MDM) tools intended for enterprise to get around safeguards like Apple’s Trusted Device requestor. So, how can you protect yourself?

Important note: Security is at perpetual odds with convenience. This process will make your iPhone and iPad more secure but less convenient. It should only be used if a) even the potential for a privacy breach is untenable for you, and b) you really, absolutely can function without connecting your iPhone or iPad to other devices.

If someone has physical access to your devices, there are all sorts of things that can be done depending on their skill level, resources, and the value of your data to them. The information here is not meant to make anyone stressed or paranoid, simply to provide a specific option for a specific vulnerability in a vacuum.

    Apple Configurator

Apple Configurator is a free tool from Apple meant to help schools, businesses, and institutions set up and manage large amounts of iPhones and iPads. With it, you can prevent your device from pairing with other computers or accessories, which prevents it generating pairing records, which prevents those records from being used to access your iPhone or iPad without your consent.

    • Free – Download now app, available for free from Apple on the Mac App Store.

How to use the Apple Configurator to secure your iPhone or iPad against unauthorized pairing

    1. Launch Apple Configurator
    2. Click on Prepare at the top
    3. Name the settings anything you like (e.g. Supervised Device)
    4. Click on Supervision to toggle it to on.
    5. Uncheck the box next to Allow devices to connect to other Macs
    6. Click on the + sign at the bottom
    7. Select Create New Profile from the popup
    8. Name the new profile anything you like (e.g. Pairing Profile)
    9. Click on Restrictions
    10. Click on Configure
    11. Scroll down to Allow pairing with non-Configurator hosts and uncheck its box.
    12. Click Save
    13. Check the box next to the new profile
    14. Click Prepare at the bottom
    15. Fill in the information you want displayed in the profile. (It doesn’t have to be accurate, you can use 555-555-5555 for a phone number if you want to.)
    16. Click Apply
    17. Connect your iPhone, iPod touch, and/or iPad to apply the new settings

    Additional security and privacy precautions

It should be noted that all the Apple Configurator does is prevent new pairing records from being generated, it does not delete existing records, nor does it protect against other types of hacking.

Apple doesn’t currently provide a front end for deleting old or existing pairing records, either on OS X or iOS, which means you’ll need to manually search for and try to remove them on your own (/var/db/lockdown or

/Library/Lockdown on Mac or C:\Program Data\Apple\iTunes\Lockdown on Windows).

Someone else having physical access to your device or devices is in and of itself a massive security problem. However, there are some things you do to make it more difficult or time consuming for someone with your device to try and get to your data, including using a long, strong alphanumeric password instead of a passcode or Touch ID, and turning off Lock screen access for Control Center, Notification Center, Siri, Passbook, etc,. To prevent other types of remote access, you can enable two-step verification on your accounts and use unique passwords in conjunction with a password manager.

I bought an iPad Air 2 from a third party and I see it’s supervised. It has many restrictions. There is no delete button in Settings. The iPad is iCloud free.I tried restoring it in recovery mode, restore and update in iTunes and then Set up as new, erase all data from the iPad but the configuration won’t be removed. When it’s being set up it says “retrieving configuration”.I tried iActivate win but it says that it’s not in their servers.

From what I’ve read, if the configuration persists then it’s in DEP.Can it be removed from DEP somehow? Is there a WAY to make this iPad a normal one so I can use it?

    2 Answers 2

Supervised devices lock in management, so your only recourse is to wipe the device. At that point you may discover that it’s also an enrolled device (DEP) and wiping does not unenroll from DEP as that is different than a MDM profile.

You cannot, by yourself, remove the iPad from DEP. The iPad has all these restrictions because it was previously managed by a company or school. You’ll need to figure out which school or company it is and send their IT and email and hope that they will remove it from their program for you. Their and IT and only their IT can unenroll an iPad from DEP.

You likely have bought an iPad that a student/teacher/employee/malicious actor stole. I doubt that an IT department knowledgeable enough to use DEP wouldn’t know to disown the devices before resale.

Also, I know this question will likely attract a lot of attention by students wishing to remove their devices from DEP: short answer, you can’t. Long answer: if you jailbreak the device you can remove the profile. This change will persist while you are on that iOS version and maybe once you update however if you restore the device it’ll come back. I of course don’t recommend this and you’ll violate your school policy (and IT will know, it’s not hard to detect a jailbroken device).

How to remove old configuration files from your iphone or ipad

If you want to download and install iOS 14 developer beta on your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch then you need iOS 14 beta Configuration Profile. Once you have installed this file on your device you will be able to make it eligible for iOS 14 developer beta.

In our digital life, there are a lot of situations that we will need to install IPSW file on iPhone, iPad or iPod touch, like, update iOS system, restore unsigned ipsw without iTunes, downgrade iOS, repair iOS issues, restore device to factory reset and so forth. At the very beginning, we’d better figure out what the IPSW is.

    What is IPSW?

IPSW file is the raw iOS software for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch, which is normally used in iTunes to install iOS firmware. And iTunes utilizes the IPSW file format to store iOS firmware to restore any device to its original state. In the following, we will show you how to install iOS manually with IPSW.

How to Use IPSW File to Restore/Update iPhone with iTunes

Now follow the guide below to learn how to restore iPhone with IPSW:

    1. Step 1: Download the IPSW file you want from here.
    2. Step 2: Open iTunes. Select your device by clicking the “device” icon. In the Summary panel hold the Option key and click Update or Restore if using a Mac, or hold the Shift key and click Update or Restore if using a Windwos PC.

Step 3: Now select your IPSW file. Browse for the download location, select the file, and click Choose. Your device will update as if the file had been downloaded through iTunes.

    • 1. Unsigned IPSW files are not supported. No tools in the market supports to restore unsigned IPSW files.
    • 2. Before updating or restoring iOS with IPSW, we highly recommend you backup your files beforehand because the data will be wiped out after restoring from IPSW files. You can use Apple’s backup methods to backup to iPhone or iCloud. Also, there are lots of free iPhone backup software that let you backup your files more flexibly.

How to Perform IPSW Restore without iTunes?

Have you met situations like, iTunes won’t let you restore iPhone from IPSW file, or your iPhone/ipad might got stuck when you are trying to restore or update them from IPSW, or see an error when using iTunes? You can try to restore iPhone from IPSW without iTunes by using iPhone restore tool – UltFone iOS System Repair, a profesional IPSW restore tool that empowers you to restore iPhone/iPad with the latest IPSW file and thus fix various iOS system issues like iPhone black screen of death, Apple logo loop, iPhone frozen, iPhone stuck in recovery mode, and more.

Download and install this iOS firmware restore tool free to your PC or Mac computer, and follow the steps to restore IPSW without iTunes.

Step 1 Launch this IPSW restore tool and connect your iPhone to computer. Click “Start” on the main interface to enter iOS system restore function.

Step 2 On the following screen, you can select the repair mode. I recommend you to use “Standard Repair” because it won’t cause losing data while restoring iPhone using IPSW file.

Step 3 By default, this program will display the latest signed IPSW file that matches your device. You can click “Download” button to start downloading the IPSW file online.

Step 4 After downloading. Hit “Start Standard Repair” to start installing the IPSW file to your iPhone and fixing the iOS problems.
