How to remove the background from a picture in microsoft word

Every so often, you might want to remove the background from an image in your Word document, leaving a transparent area instead. You could turn to a full-featured image editor, but you can also do this right within Microsoft Word. Here’s how.

There are many reasons why you may want to remove the background from an image. Perhaps you want to focus on one particular person or object without the background getting in the way. Maybe the background color doesn’t fit well with other colors in your document. Or maybe you just want to use Word’s text wrapping tools to get the text wrapped tighter around the image. Whatever your reason, removing the background from an image in Word is pretty easy.

The caveat here is that Word’s image editing tools are not as sophisticated as those you’ll find in something like Photoshop, or even other image editing apps. They work best if you have a fairly simple image with a clearly-defined subject.

We’re going to assume you’ve already inserted the image into your Word document. If not, go ahead and do that now.

Word colors the background the image in magenta; everything in magenta will get removed from the image. This Is Microsoft’s attempt at auto-detecting the background of an image.

How to remove the background from a picture in microsoft word

As you can see, Word isn’t quite sophisticated enough to accurately pick out the background on most images. That’s ok. Word provides two tools for helping you clean things up.

You should now see a new “Background Removal” tab on the Ribbon with a few options: Mark Areas to Keep, Mark Areas to Remove, Discard All Changes, and Keep Changes.

Returning to our example, you can see that Word didn’t correctly mark part of the background—there’s some grass still visible right in front of our tiger’s face. Word also marked part of the tiger (the area behind his head) incorrectly as part of the background. We’re going to use both the “Mark Areas to Keep” and “Mark Areas to Remove” tools to fix that.

Let’s start with the areas we want to keep. Click the “Mark Areas to Keep” button.

How to remove the background from a picture in microsoft word

Your pointer changes to a pen that lets you highlight the areas of the image you want to keep. You can click a spot or draw a little bit. You’ll have to experiment with your image to find what works best. Keep in mind that you can undo an action if you go too far, or you can click the “Discard All Changes” button to wipe out all your changes and start over.

When you’re done marking things, you can click anywhere outside the image to see the effect. After marking some areas on our tiger to keep, we now have an image that looks a bit like this.

How to remove the background from a picture in microsoft word

Next, we’re going to mark the areas we want to remove from the image. In our case, it’s that bit of background that still remains. This time click the “Mark Areas to Remove” button.

Again, your pointer turns into a pen. This time, click or paint the areas you want to remove from the image. They should turn magenta as you do so.

Click outside the image at any time to check your work. When you’re satisfied, click the “Keep Changes” button on the “Background Removal” tab.

The modified image appears on the document canvas.

How to remove the background from a picture in microsoft word

If you’re not satisfied with the final image, go to the Picture Format tab, select Remove Background, then keep or remove parts of the image.

Not all images are set up in a way that makes removing the background easy. If there are lots of complex colors and shapes, it may take several attempts to choose which parts to delete and which parts to keep.

How the Remove Background Tool Works in Word

When you erase an image background in Word, you can delete objects or people in a photo, or remove solid colors that don’t work well with the other colors in the document. Removing the fill increases flexibility and creativity when designing documents, can make certain objects pop out of an image, and expands text-wrapping options.

Much like a regular image editing application, you choose which parts of the image to delete and which parts to keep. The initial background removal process usually doesn’t catch exactly what you want to delete or keep, so use the additional keep and remove tools to customize the picture.

You’ll need to unlock the primary layer of the image. In Layers, right-click the main layer and select Layer from Background. You can use the Magic Wand, Lasso, or Quick Mask tool to select and delete the background.

Select an image in Canva and click on Edit Image. Next, select BG Remover, then select Erase.

How to remove the background from a picture in microsoft word

MS Office tools like Word, PowerPoint and Excel have their own specific uses and few would disagree that each of them is really good at what it is meant to do. However, conventional uses aside, they’re actually capable of much more provided we can put our creative minds to work.

One such capabilities is the image editing options like cropping in any shape and applying effects. Today we are set to explore yet another image editing feature of Microsoft Office products. We will learn to remove background from an image. Yes, this isn’t something that’s directly available in image editing tools (except for advanced tools like Photoshop). So this method is likely to come in handy at times.

Note: We have used MS Word for the tutorial. But Excel and PowerPoint also support the same.

    Steps to Remove Image Background

Open a Word document and insert the sample image in it. You may drag and drop the image or navigate to Insert -> Pictures and then browse for your image.

Step 3: Even with that you may be left with few unwanted areas (like the shadow) or few removed areas which you needed (on the edges).

To your rescue, you can use the Background Removal tools like Mark Areas to Keep and Mark Areas to Remove. As the names indicate, they can be used to mark more area to remove or mark an area to keep from what has already been selected on its own.

One such option is the ability to remove a background from a picture in Word 2010. This option is ideally suited for scenarios where the background of an image is unnecessary or unwanted and you do not have other tools to use to perform the action. The background removal is fast and very effective when used correctly on an image in which Word 2010 is capable of easily identifying foreground versus background objects.

Removing Image Backgrounds in Word 2010

I had become so accustomed to doing most of my image editing in other programs that I had never considered this to be something that might be possible with Word. So when I stumbled upon it and began experimenting with it, I was pleasantly surprised to see that it was a very capable tool for removing image backgrounds. This tool will not work on every image and you do not have as much control over the background removal as you might like, but it can be very effective.

Step 1: Open the document for which you want to remove a background from a picture in Word 2010.

Step 2: Scroll to the image in the document.

Step 3: Click the image so that it is selected, which will switch the top ribbon to the Picture Tools – Format option.

Step 4: Click the Remove Background button in the Adjust section of the ribbon.

Step 5: Move the boundaries on the image until the portion of the image that you want to keep is selected. You will notice that the background is in a purplish hue. This identifies the portion of the image that will be removed.

Step 6: Use the tools in the Refine section of the ribbon to draw lines around any areas that are either incorrectly marked to be removed or to be kept.

Step 7: Click the Keep Changes button in the Close section of the ribbon to remove the background.

You will have difficulty removing image backgrounds if there is not a lot of difference between the background and foreground but, for images with contrast between those two areas, this tool can be very helpful.

Images can be added to a Word document in a number of different ways, and the correct way to do so will depend on the result that you are trying to achieve. If you wish to have a picture display behind the text in your document, then adding a background picture may be the correct choice. But after adding the background picture, you might decide that you dislike the appearance.

Removing a background picture can be a little tricky, however. Our guide below will walk you through the steps that you need to follow in order to remove a picture that you have added to the background of your document.

Deleting a Background Picture in Word 2010

These steps are meant to remove an image that has been added to your Word document as a background picture. If these steps do not work, then your background picture is actually either a header picture or a watermark. See our additional steps at the end of the article for ways to remove a watermark or a header picture.

Step 1: Open your document in Word 2010.

Step 2: Click the Page Layout tab at the top of the window.

How to remove the background from a picture in microsoft word

Step 3: Click the Page Color button in the Page Background section of the Office ribbon, then click the No Color option.

How to remove the background from a picture in microsoft word

Your background picture should now be gone. If it is still there, then the picture was inserted as a watermark or a header picture. You can remove a watermark by clicking the Page Layout tab at the top of the window, then clicking the Watermark button in the Page Background section of the Office ribbon and choosing the Remove Watermark option.

How to remove the background from a picture in microsoft word

If your image still remains, then it is likely a header picture. You can remove a header picture by double-clicking inside the header section of the Word document. You will know that the header section is active when you see the Header & Footer Tools tab at the top of the window.

How to remove the background from a picture in microsoft word

You can then click the picture to select it, then press the Backspace or Delete key on your keyboard to delete the picture.

Do you have a background picture in your document that you wish to print? This guide will show you the settings to adjust for that to happen.

Word 2010: Remove the background from an image

Here’s a cool new feature of Word 2010 I’ve just discovered! You can remove the background of an image, leaving only the pertinent parts.

Here’s one of the sample images in Windows inserted into a Word 2010 document:

How to remove the background from a picture in microsoft word

And here’s the same image after I used the Remove Background tool to take out the background:

How to remove the background from a picture in microsoft word

So, how did I do it and what are the things to watch out for?

    1. Insert the image into your Word 2010 document (Insert tab > Picture).
    2. Once it’s in, select it to open the Picture Tools toolbar > Format tab.
    3. Click the Remove Background button (at the far left on the Picture Tools > Format tab).
    4. Your image opens with a ‘best guess’ from Word as to what it is you want to keep (the area marked with the white box).
How to remove the background from a picture in microsoft word
    5. Drag the handles on the white lines to mark the boundaries of the object(s) you want to keep. The objects that will remain are shown in their normal colors. In the example below, I’ve dragged the handles a little and you can see that the turtle and some of the fish will be included.
How to remove the background from a picture in microsoft word
    6. But what if you don’t want the fish? Then you have to drag the white lines so they just touch the turtle and the fish turn pink. It can be a fine line between including something in the background and not, so you may need to experiment a bit. You can always reset the picture and try again if you don’t get what you want the first time.
How to remove the background from a picture in microsoft word
    7. When you have finished, click the Keep Changes button to return to the document — your image’s background should be gone.
    8. If you messed up, don’t despair– just click the Reset Picture button and start again.

Other things you can do with the Remove Background picture effects feature:

    • Click the Mark Areas to Keep button, then draw point-to-point lines to outline the part of the image you want to keep. When you’ve finished, click Keep Changes.
    • Click the Mark Areas to Remove button, then draw point-to-point lines to outline the part of the image you want to delete. When you’ve finished, click Keep Changes.

If you make a mistake, click Delete Mark to remove the most recent line you drew, or Discard All Changes to remove all lines.

I’m continually pleasantly surprised by the extra graphics editing capabilities Microsoft is incorporating into Word. Yes, I know Word is fundamentally a text editor, but for people who don’t want to spend big bucks on graphics software OR spend the time learning how to use it, these new features are quick, simple and easy to use — and they come free with Word. For the user who only occasionally needs to work with graphics, Word just keeps getting better and better.

The graphics editing features in Microsoft Word have certainly come a long way. You no longer need Photoshop for some common picture editing. For example, Word’s Picture Tools can remove backgrounds and colors from images.

Remove the Background From an Image

This works best with uncluttered backgrounds and edges with contrast.

Click on your picture, then on the PICTURE TOOLS > FORMAT Tab. Click on the first button on the ribbon, REMOVE BACKGROUND, and two things happen: the picture sports bright pink coloring, and a new ribbon appears.

On the ribbon, MARK AREAS TO KEEP removes the pink knockout marks from areas you want to save.

Use MARK AREAS TO REMOVE to tell Word what to knock out.

Click on either of these buttons and click-and-drag across small segments of the photo to increase or decrease the pink area. Use relatively small lines so that Word can analyze the image to find clear boundaries.

If you make a mistake, click the DELETE MARK button and click on the + or — sign in the middle of your marks.

When the areas you want to remove are all pink, click KEEP CHANGES. If you change my mind and want to cancel, click DISCARD ALL CHANGES.

    Remove Color

This works best for gifs and drawings with areas of flat color.

After inserting your graphic, click on the COLOR button, then on SET TRANSPARENT COLOR.

The cursor becomes a pen with a black angle. Click on the color in the picture to be removed, and all pixels of that color disappear.

While the removed color looks white, it’s actually transparent. If you print on colored paper, the paper color shines through. If you layer this graphic over another, the bottom one peeks through.

How to remove the background from a picture in microsoft word

When placing text over a graphic in Microsoft Word, you may need to take an extra step. By adding a bit of blur or transparency, your readers can still see the image, but your text will be more readable.

Luckily, Word offers a few built-in image editing tools that can help. With a tweak or two, you can give that image a more subtle appearance. Whether you want to blur the image or make it more transparent, we’ve got you covered.

Add Blur to an Image in Word

Adding blur to an image in Word will soften its appearance. Select the image and open the picture corrections options using one of these two methods.

    • Right-click, select “Format Picture,” and choose the Picture icon in the sidebar.

Add Transparency to an Image in Word

Maybe you’d prefer to make your image more transparent rather than blur it for your particular document. You can do this in the same area as above.

Open the Format Picture sidebar using one of the methods above and expand Picture Transparency.

You can use one of the presets for a quick transparent application. Alternatively, use the slider or the percentage box for slight adjustments.

To use a preset, click the Presets arrow and choose an option. You’ll see choices from 95 percent down to zero.

How to remove the background from a picture in microsoft word

If you want to make an exact adjustment or add transparency a little at a time, use the slider or the percentage box. In the box, you can enter a specific percent or use the up and down arrows.

    4. Click the Picture Border drop-down menu in the Picture Styles section of the ribbon, then click the No Outline option.

Our article continues below with additional information on removing borders in Word 2013, including pictures of these steps.

Removing a Border from a Picture in Word 2013 (Guide with Pictures)

The steps in this article will assume that a border has been added to a picture in your Word 2013 document. If you follow the steps below and the border is not removed, then the border may actually be a part of the image itself, rather than a border that was added in Word. In that case, you will need an image editing program like Microsoft Paint or Adobe Photoshop to remove the border.

Step 1: Open the document that contains the picture with the border that you want to remove.

Step 2: Click the picture to select it, which will show a Format tab at the top of the window.

That Format tab should also be active now. If not, click it.

How to remove the background from a picture in microsoft word

Step 3: Click the Picture Border button in the Picture Styles section of the ribbon, then click the No Outline option.

The border should now be gone.

How to remove the background from a picture in microsoft word

If, however, the border still remains, then it may have been added in a different way. One other option to remove the border from your picture is to reset the picture. You can do this from the Format tab as well. Click the Reset Picture button in the Adjust section of the ribbon. Note that this will undo any other adjustments that you have made to the picture as well.

How to remove the background from a picture in microsoft word

If the border is around the entire document, rather than just a picture in the document, then you can follow the steps in the next section.

How to Remove Border in Word 2013 Document

If you see a line or decoration around the body of your document, then that document has a border. These are typically used on documents that are more visually oriented, like a newsletter or a flyer, but occasionally people may use them on traditional documents.

Regardless of the situation, if you have a document with a border that needs to be removed, then you can do it with these steps.

    1. Open the document.
    2. Click the Layout tab.
    3. Select Page Borders.
    4. Choose None under Setting.
    5. Click the OK button.

Another situation with borders that you might encounter involves a border that is around a single word, sentence, or paragraph.

More On the Borders and Shading Dialog Box

When you are making changes to the page border in the section above you are adjusting settings in a window called Borders and Shading.

At the top of this window is a Borders tab, a Page Borders tab, and a Shading tab. The “Borders” tab provides ways to customize borders around part of your document. It also gives you a way to access these options from the Design tab rather than using the option on the Home tab in the Paragraph group that we will discuss in the section below.

Selecting either of those options is going to provide you with ways to remove or customize a border around your entire document or just part of it.

How to Remove a Border from Part of a Document in Word 2013

If you see a line or graphic around a single word, a sentence or two, or one or more paragraphs, then you are dealing with a different kind of border.

Microsoft Word has a number of different formatting options on the Home tab, and one of them lets you use borders. Luckily these can be removed in a manner similar to most other changes that are applied to a selection in a document.

    1. Open the document.
    2. Select the text with the border.
    3. Click the Home tab.
    4. Click the arrow next to the Borders button.
    5. Choose the No Border option.

More Information on How to Remove Borders in Word 2013

When using the steps in this article to remove a border from a picture, it is assumed that the border was added in Word. If it’s actually a part of the picture, then you will need to use an image editing application t remove the border instead.

As mentioned previously, if the border still remains, then it is likely a part of the picture itself. You can edit the picture in an image-editing program, or you can try to crop the picture in Word 2013.

With Microsoft PowerPoint’s range of presentation options, they also house some powerful photo editing tools. One of those basic image editing tools provides you with the ability to remove the background of an image. This can be helpful during your presentations so that you can direct your audience’s focus to what is important. You can also use this to take certain pieces of an image, layer images, or just to get a simple transparent background.

There is no need for you to go out subscribe to a photo editing tool that has this feature. Usually, the remove background tool is in the paid versions of these programs. Instead, you can use PowerPoint to edit images for your presentation, or edit a photo and copy and paste it into your current project!

    Technique 1: Set Transparent Color

For images with a simple background, like a solid color, we will be using this first technique. This is the fastest and easiest way to remove the background.

How to remove the background from a picture in microsoft word

First, click on the image that you want to remove the background on. To insert an image, either upload one from your desktop or online from the Insert tab on the ribbon and then the Pictures icon. After you have clicked on the image, click on the Picture Tools Format tab that appears on the top PowerPoint ribbon.

How to remove the background from a picture in microsoft word

Next, click on the Color icon, then the Set Transparent Color option at the bottom of the drop-down menu. Then, you will see an eyedropper appears at your mouse.

How to remove the background from a picture in microsoft word

You can take that and hover over the color that you want to set as transparent. Once you click on that color, that color will disappear, leaving your photo to have a transparent background! How easy.

How to remove the background from a picture in microsoft word

If you need to reset your image, you can always just click the Reset Picture icon in the Format tab.

    Technique 2: Remove Background

For images with a more complex background, like many different colors, or patterns, use the Remove Background feature instead.

How to remove the background from a picture in microsoft word

You begin in the same way as Technique 1 by clicking on the image and opening the Picture Tools Format tab that appears on the top PowerPoint ribbon. But now, we are going to click on Remove Background, the icon that is all the way on the left of the ribbon.

How to remove the background from a picture in microsoft word

Once you click there, you will notice that it turns parts of your image pink. This is how PowerPoint differentiates what parts of the image to remove and what parts to keep. You will notice that sometimes PowerPoint doesn’t get it exactly right. Luckily, there are tools for you to mark the areas to keep or delete if they got it wrong.

How to remove the background from a picture in microsoft word

Click the Mark Areas to Keep icon, then drag your mouse over to the image. Once on the image, you will see a pen. The pen allows you to do the markings. From here, you just need to draw a line on the parts of the image to keep. After you have made a line, PowerPoint can determine the colors around your line and will keep those that are similar. Do this as many times as you need to get your image looking the way you want.

If there are any parts you want to remove, you can do it in the same way but with the Mark Areas to Delete icon.

How to remove the background from a picture in microsoft word

Once your image is looking the way you want, click on Keep Changes. If you notice some mistakes after, you can always go back into that menu by clicking on Remove Background again. To reset the image here, you can Discard All Changes as well.

Now, you are free to resize, move, and layer your images as you see fit!

    PowerPoint Limitations

PowerPoint is not a photo editing tool, so there are a few limitations that PowerPoint’s background removal features have. So be aware when doing this, for not all images will be as easy as the ones above.

First, neither options works well with gradient images. Because of the different shades of colors, PowerPoint isnt exactly sure what parts to remove.

How to remove the background from a picture in microsoft word

The second, is with images that all similar tones of color. With the shading and similar colors on screen, it makes it difficult to determine which pieces of the image should be kept or gotten rid of.

Lastly, with fine lines PowerPoint struggles as well. Not all parts around the edges of the lines will be removed.

    When to Use Each Technique

Technique 1 is faster and super effective for simple photos. Use Technique 1 for the simplest of photos and when you are in a pinch for time.

Technique 2 is best for more complex images. It also works for a wider variety of images, so if you are unsure which technique to use, this would be the safer option to not waste time in doing them both!

    A Technology Tip

Remove the Background of a Picture or Clipart in PowerPoint, Word or Excel

When adding a picture or clipart to your PowerPoint or Word document, you may run into a situation where you don’t want its background to appear. This happens most frequently to me when I place a logo or symbol onto a PowerPoint slide and its background is a different colour than the background of the slide.
There is no need for a fancy photo editing tool like Photoshop. In Word, PowerPoint and Excel 2010 and later versions you can use the Background Removal tool to easily remove a background from a picture. (Older versions of Office may have the more simplified option of selecting Format – Background – No Fill.) This is how the Background Removal tool works:
First, click on the picture that you want to remove the background from. Next, under Picture Tools, on the Format tab, click Background Removal. Drag the handles on the marquee lines so they contain just the portion of the picture that you wish to keep. The program will try to intuitively remove areas around the selected portion of your picture.
You can them manually customize what goes or stays by using Mark Areas to Keep or Mark Areas to Remove (click on one or the other and click on elements of your picture), or by drawing lines with your mouse to indicate the approximate area you’re interested in keeping or removing. Use Delete Mark to get rid of any drawn indicator lines you decide against or Discard All Changes to start over. When you have removed all the parts you don’t want, click Keep Changes to return to your document and see the results. If you don’t like the result, remember that Undo (Ctrl+Z) will undo your changes.
Tip: Expand your image before starting the Removal Tool to make it easier to see what you are selecting. This is especially helpful if your image has tiny details.

How to add color or a picture to a Word document’s background

How to add color or a picture to a Word document’s background

There’s nothing wrong with a white background, but Microsoft Word lets you change the color of a document’s background. You can even use a picture, but don’t get carried away.

Editor’s note: In the video, Brandon Vigliarolo uses Microsoft Office 365 and walks through the steps of adding colors or images to the background of your Word documents. In the following tutorial, Susan Harkins explains the process when using Word 2010. This article was first published in December 2011 and was updated in March 2019.

Most documents are rather boring–the same black text on a white background. That’s the way it should be though because most documents don’t require special graphics and colors. However, when a document requires more, Word offers many visual possibilities. For instance, you might want to change the background’s color or even use a picture as the document’s background. Both are easy to accomplish, technically speaking, and in this article, I’ll show you how to do both.

Keep in mind that adding a background color or picture to a document is much easier than designing a visually effective document. I’ll share only the mechanical process; how you implement the feature is up to you.

I’m using Office 365 Word (desktop) on a Windows 10 64-bit system, but you can use older versions. You’ll find these options on the Design tab in the Page Background group. (In earlier versions, look for the Page Layout tab.) The browser edition doesn’t support the background feature.

    Add color

Adding a bit of color is probably the easiest way to liven up an otherwise boring document. You might decide to add a sedate color to a promotional letter or resume. To add color to a document’s background, you’ll work from the Design tab, as follows.

    1. Click Page Color in the Page Background group.
    2. Choose a color from the gallery (palette) as shown in Figure A.

    Figure A

It doesn’t get much easier than that. You can click More Colors to fine-tune a gallery color. Choose No Color to remove a colored background.

Although simple, you could create some ghastly backgrounds. There’s a lot to consider when introducing color into a document. Color-wise, there are several attributes, hue, chroma, and so on.

Your main consideration should be legibility. In that regard, contrast is usually the most important factor: the higher the contrast, the more legible the text. It also adds to the layers of separation, as shown in the illustration in Figure B. The more contrast, the more depth, which improves readability. I’m not suggesting that you take a crayon-box attitude to your documents though. This illustration is just that, an illustration–not a recommendation for these particular colors.

    Figure B

Limiting your choices will produce the best results. Limit your color palette to two or three colors. Use different shades (hue) and saturation (chroma) to add variation. And remember, even in digital form, there’s nothing wrong with a white background.

    Add a picture

The process for adding a picture to a document’s background is similar to inserting a picture into an AutoShape–you use the Fill Effects option.

Note:This feature has the potential to produce more ghastly results, so just because you can add a picture doesn’t mean you should.

You’ll use the same Page Color option on the Page Layout tab (in the Page Background group) to add a picture, as follows.

    1. Click the Page Color option and choose Fill Effects.
    2. Click the Picture tab.
    3. Click Select Picture.
    4. Locate the picture you want to insert and click Insert.
    5. Click OK.

    Figure C

Figure C shows an interesting background that might work well with the right subject matter, but it presents quite a challenge. What color font would you use? How much text could you add? Balancing all the requirements takes skill, but most of us can learn those skills with the right training. If you change your mind, it’s easy to remove, albeit not intuitive: Choose No Color from the Page Color dropdown.

As I mentioned, adding color or a picture to a document’s background is easy. Producing a visually effective document takes specialized knowledge.
