How to remove the microsoft store icon from the taskbar in windows 10

Many programs are pre-installed in Windows 10. Some of these applications are popular among users, while others are viewed as a nuisance. Unfortunately, the Microsoft Store app falls into the second group. Despite the fact that the Microsoft Store app has a wide range of applications, e-books, games, movies, and TV episodes that Windows 10 users may download for free or for a fee, many users find it highly irritating.

Unfortunately, the Microsoft Store app is being promoted in the same way that the U2 album was promoted by Apple. Microsoft has pinned the Store app to the taskbar of all devices, including PCs and tablets, in the same way, that iTunes pre-downloaded the whole U2 album. When corporations try to force their products down people’s throats, they resent it. Apart from the overall annoyance aspect, the Store app has a significant negative impact on employee productivity due to the numerous distracting apps that can be downloaded with it.

This is why we’ve prepared a guide to show you how to remove the Microsoft Store icon from your Windows 10 taskbar.

It will help you go through the whole process step by step so that you can get rid of the annoying pinned Store app forever.

Removal of the Microsoft Store App Icon from Taskbar

Step 1: In order to remove any application, sign in as an administrator on your PC or tablet.

Step 2: A group policy needs to be set up for removal of Windows Store icon in Windows 10 i.e. user policy with the name ‘ Do Not Allow Pinning Store App to the Taskbar ’ to enabled in. To set up this policy you need to access ‘ Local Group Policy Editor ’.

To access the Local Group Policy Editor, follow the instructions given below:

Note: gpedit.msc is not available on Windows 10 Home Edition

Step 4: Double-click on ‘Start Menu and Taskbar’ , you will see the policies in the right pane. Here, double-click on ‘ Do Not Allow Pinning Store App to the Taskbar ’ policy in order to edit it.

Step 5: A window will open with three options for the policy i.e. Not Configured, Enabled, and Disabled. Not configured is the default value. To remove the icon, select the radio button next to ‘ Enabled ’ option.

Step 6: Click on ‘ Ok ’ to close the window and exit the Local Group Policy Editor.

Step 7: Now, if your Store icon has not been removed after applying group policies then go to the taskbar. Right-click on the icon. A menu will open. Select ‘ Unpin from taskbar ’ option.

How to remove the microsoft store icon from the taskbar in windows 10

Microsoft decided to pin the Microsoft Store icon directly to the Taskbar in Windows 10, because they really really really want you to use it. But we don’t want to. So here’s how to unpin the Windows Store from the Taskbar. (It’s easy).

When you first switch to Windows 10, it becomes very obvious how desperate Microsoft is to get you to use the Windows App Store, also called the Microsoft Store—they are even willing to stick ads everywhere in the operating system. But when the best new thing in the Store is iTunes, you’re probably not going to convince anybody.

So it’s settled. The Store must go away. And now, we will unpin it from the Taskbar. Luckily that’s incredibly easy, because you can unpin the Store from the Taskbar by simply right-clicking it and selecting “Unpin from taskbar”.

For bonus points, you can also unpin the Microsoft Store from the Start Menu by right-clicking there, and selecting “Unpin from Start”. This right-clicking thing is great, isn’t it?

Now that you’re all excited about removing all the built-in nonsense in Windows 10, why don’t you try getting rid of all the garbage apps that Microsoft bundled?

Earlier today I got a question on how to remove the default Windows Store and Mail icons from the taskbar in Windows 10 v1703.

The answer is simply, use a group policy.

Remove the Mail icon

Removing the Mail icon can be done by applying a custom taskbar XML file via group policy. Here is an example:

Then you configure the group policy, and it can be either a user policy or a computer policy. You find the Start Layout policy in the Policies / Administrative Templates / Start Menu and Taskbar node. Here is an example when it’s configured for a computer.

Removing the Windows Store icon

To remove the Windows Store icon you set another group policy, it’s a user policy named Do not allow pinning Store app to the Taskbar which you find in the User Configuration / Administrative Templates / Start Menu and Taskbar node. Here is the configured policy.

The store icon is on the taskbar because Microsoft really want you to use its store. Well, you don’t have to, so here’s how to unpin the Windows Store from your taskbar in Windows 11.

Others default icons that are added to the taskbar in Windows 11 can not easily removed simply by right-clicking and unpinning. For those you will have to use the Windows Settings app to hide these icons.

For the Microsoft Store app icon, you can not hide it using the Windows Settings app. For that, you can just right-click on the icon and select “ Unpin from taskbar

Below is how to do that if you haven’t done it before.

How to hide the Microsoft Store icon from taskbar in Windows 11

As mentioned above, you can’t hide the Microsoft Store app icon from the taskbar in Windows 11. You can only remove it by unpinning.

Here’s how to do it.

While logged to your Windows desktop, right-click on the Store app icon on the Taskbar. Then select “ Unpin from taskbar ” as shown below.

Alternatively, you can also unpin the Store app icon from the Taskbar as well as Start menu. Click on the Start button, then right-click the Store app icon in the Start menu and select Unpin from taskbar and Unpin from Start as shown below.

That should do it!

Unpin icons from Taskbar in Windows 10 20H2

Is there any reliable Powershell script to do this trick today? I managed these icons together with Start menu layout xml but since from 20H2 is has no effect anymore. I need to get rid of MS Store icon from Taskbar. I tried these scripts, they do process “Microsoft Store” but it not actually removed, so basically that script does not do anything.

Hi,
I am facing an issue trying to unpin the Mail icon from the taskbar in windows 10 1909 image. I have a script below that unpins the Store icon

function Unpin-App([string]$appname) <
((New-Object -Com Shell.Application).NameSpace(‘shell. <4234d49b-0245-4df3-b780-3893943456e1>‘).Items() |
?<$.Name -eq $appname>).Verbs() | ?<$.Name.replace(‘&’,”) -match ‘Unpin from taskbar’> | %<$_.DoIt()>
>

But I am unable to unpin the Mail icon.
I have saved the above code as a .PS1 file and I inject it via intune during Autopilot deployment. Any help to achieve the above for Mail icon would be greatly appreciated.

@yannara, Based on my test, I find in my environment, custom taskbar layout is working well. The “Microsoft Store” is not there when it is not included in the xml.

For our situation, I suggest to select one Windows 10 20H2 device, customize the taskbar, export the XML and choose the information between and . we can refer it to the one in the above picture. And then deploy it via the device restriction policy.

For the detailed steps, here is an article for the reference:

Note: Non-Microsoft link, just for the reference.

For the Powershell script, I have done a lot of research and test. And find the following Powershell script can be used to unpin Microsoft store from taskbar

$appname = “Microsoft Store”
((New-Object -Com Shell.Application).NameSpace(‘shell. <4234d49b-0245-4df3-b780-3893943456e1>‘).Items() | ?<$.Name -eq $appname>).Verbs() | ?<$.Name.replace(‘&’,”) -match ‘Unpin from taskbar’> | %

Remove Microsoft Store and Mail icons for Windows 10 through GPO

Good afternoon all, I have a client requesting that we remove the Microsoft Store and Mail icons from users tasbbars via GPO. While removing store is simple enough, removing mail has me asking a question. In an article I found (https://deploymentresearch.com/removing-windows-store-and-mail-icon-from-the-windows-10-v1703-taskbar/) it says to create an XML file and then attach it to your Start Layout policy. Now on my 2019 server I see a Start Screen Layout, but not Start Layout. Perhaps they are one in the same, but I do not want to risk blowing up users start menu’s if this were not the case. So that is my question to you all, is Start Screen Layout and Start layout one in the same? Is it safe to create XML file and then attach it via the GPO policy? Thank you all for your help, it is greatly appreciated!

1 Answer

On my Windows Server 2019, the setting is named Start Layout rather than Start Screen Layout in Computer Configuration and User Configuration. The method you mentioned is link is available.

  3. Conclusion

In the first post of this series, I outlined why you probably don’t want your users to install apps from the Windows Store. If you just disable the Windows Store via Group Policy, many users will click the Store app anyway, which is now right in front of their nose on the Taskbar.

How to remove the microsoft store icon from the taskbar in windows 10

Windows Store app pinned to Taskbar

The following error message will probably trigger many help desk calls:

How to remove the microsoft store icon from the taskbar in windows 10

“Contact your system administrator” message

If you don’t want to be contacted for more information, you must unpin the Store icon from the Taskbar. Doing so isn’t as easy as it should be, but PowerShell is powerful enough to accomplish this daunting task. Please note that “programmatically changing the Taskbar pins is not supported or encouraged by Microsoft.”

Nevertheless, MVP Jan Egil Ring posted a PowerShell module on TechNet that allows you to pin and unpin applications from the Taskbar and Start Menu. I used Jan’s function Set-PinnedApplication in the module for the following PowerShell script. The last seven lines seven lines are mine.

Remove Windows Store app from Taskbar ^

The Set-PinnedApplication function takes shortcuts as input, but for some reason the function doesn’t accept the original Windows Store link (C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Windows Store.lnk). Other Modern app shortcuts in this folder, such as the Camera.lnk, work. That is why the script first creates a new shortcut with the same target path, which I save in the user’s profile. I then pin this link to the Taskbar and delete it again in the next line. This will also remove the original Store link from the Taskbar. The last line deletes the shortcut from the user’s profile.

Launch PowerShell script at user logon ^

You can’t run this PowerShell script as a normal logon script (Windows Settings > Scripts) because these logon scripts run right after the user logs on and before the user’s desktop is available. This is why you have to use the Group Policy setting “Run these programs at user logon” in User Configuration > Administrative Templates > System > Logon.

Run these programs at user logon

This Group Policy setting for logon scripts doesn’t allow you to run PowerShell scripts directly. Thus, you have to launch the script through the powershell command:

In my example, the PowerShell scripts is stored on the network share “scripts” on the server “win2012r2.”

Items to run at logon

Notice that your users will momentarily see a PowerShell command window after they logged in. I will show you in an upcoming post how to deal with such popup windows in logon scripts. I know that the entire procedure is a bit unorthodox, but it works. If you know of a better way, feel free to share it in the comment section below.

Conclusion ^

If you don’t want your users to install apps from the Windows Store, you have to do three things: disable the Windows Store, remove the Windows Store from the Start Screen, and unpin the Store icon from the Taskbar. I am hoping that Windows 9 will have a Group Policy setting that allows you to do this for your entire network with just one click. Another option exists which allows you to configure the pinned apps on the Taskbar with Group Policy. I will discuss this solution another post. Stay tuned!

You can disable Microsoft store using multiple methods. In this post, I will show you how to turn off Microsoft Store application using Registry, PowerShell, Locally and Group Policy.

What is Microsoft store? The Microsoft Store is an app on Windows and allows you to install apps and games, purchase digital media and Microsoft devices.

If you are not using Microsoft store application on your computer, you can disable it, certainly. However, some users tend to leave it enabled on the taskbar.

You can also hide the Store icon from the task sequence so that you don’t accidentally launch it. Right-click the Microsoft store icon on task bar and click Unpin from taskbar.

But if you have decided to disable the Microsoft store application, I will show you how to do it using multiple ways. Depending upon your requirement, you can go with any of these methods.

Most admins prefer to disable the store application using group policy. We will use the built-in policy setting called Turn off the store application to disable the access to the Store application. By default, this policy is set to Not configured.

Note – The GPO method will work only in Windows 10 Enterprise and Education editions on V1511 or later. According to Microsoft, this behavior is by design. In Windows 10, version 1511,1809, and 1903, these policies are applicable to users of the Enterprise and Education editions only.

If you enable this setting, access to the Store application will be denied. Access to the Store is required for installing app updates. If you disable or don’t configure this setting, access to the Store application is allowed.

Table of Contents

Method 1 – Turn off Microsoft Store Application locally

You can turn off Microsoft store application on a single computer using the following steps. First, on your Windows 10 computer, click Start > Run > type the command gpedit.msc.

This launches the Local group policy editor. Now expand Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components . Click on Store folder.

In the right pane, right click Turn off the store application and click Edit. Select Enabled to turn off the Microsoft store application. Click Apply and OK.

Before you test further, run the gpupdate /force command to update the policies. Reboot the computer. Login and try opening the Microsoft Store application. Now it shows Microsoft Store is blocked. Check with your IT or system administrator.

Method 2 – Disable Microsoft Store Application using Registry

You can tweak the registry to disable the Microsoft store application. However, I would recommend backing up the registry before you make any further changes.

Click Start > Run and type the command regedit. Browse to the following path – Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\WindowsStore . Look for Registry key named RemoveWindowsStore. By default, the value is 0.

To disable the Microsoft store application, change the value of RemoveWindowsStore from 0 to 1. Close the registry editor and reboot your computer once. You’ll now find that Microsoft store app is no longer available on your system.

Method 3 – Uninstall Microsoft Store using PowerShell

To remove or uninstall Microsoft Store from your computer, try the below steps.

  • Run the PowerShell as administrator.
  • Copy and paste the following command into the PowerShell prompt and hit Enter – Get-appxpackage windowsstore | remove-appxPackage
  • The Microsoft store is now uninstalled for the current user.

The above command uninstalls the Microsoft store application for the currently logged-in user. If you want to remove the store application for all the users, run the following PowerShell command – Get-Appxpackage -allusers windowsstore | Remove-AppxPackage

Tip – In case you want to reinstall the Windows Store, open PowerShell as administrator and run the following command – Get-AppxPackage -AllUsers| Foreach

Method 4 – Turn Off Microsoft Store using Group Policy

In Method 1, we disabled the Store application locally using gpedit.msc. If you want to disable the store application on multiple computers in a domain, you can use group policy.

Before you apply this group policy to your domain computers, I would recommend applying it on a OU containing few test machines. If you find it working, you can deploy it to a larger set of computers.

Launch the GPMC console, create a new GPO and name it as turn off Microsoft store. Right-click the newly created GPO and click Edit.

Go to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components . Click on Store folder.

In the right pane, right click Turn off the store application and click Edit. Select Enabled to turn off the Microsoft store application. Click Apply and OK.

You need to wait for the policy to get applied on the client machines. You can also run gpupdate /force on the client computers. Launching the Microsoft store should now show Microsoft Store is blocked. Check with your IT or system administrator.

However, those users will find it difficult to adjust with the taskbar, the search box, and the app icons placed on the left side. Thankfully, Windows 10 allows a couple of ways to relocated those app icons in the middle of the taskbar.

Many GT members also keep the app icons in the middle of the taskbar in Windows 10. It’s all about symmetry, isn’t it? Microsoft certainly is aware of the trend, and it has placed the app icons and the main Windows button in the middle of the taskbar in the upcoming Windows 11 OS.

This bug keeps coming back regardless of Windows 10 version

In addition to the desktop context menus that sometime appear under the taskbar, there’s another long-time bug in Windows 10 that keeps happening on various devices out there (and which I personally experienced a few months ago): taskbar icons go blank all of a sudden.

If this bug occurs, the taskbar icons themselves are not removed, and you can still interact with them, only that instead of the icon what you see is blank taskbar space.

It doesn’t really matter what Windows 10 version you are running because similar problems have been reported on both old and new OS releases – for example, some users come across the same issue on Windows 10 November 2019 Update (version 1909), which is the latest version, but I previously experienced it in the April 2018 Update as well.

There are several ways to (try to) fix this, and the most effective method is actually to free up disk space.

When you are running out of disk space, the icon cache is no longer correctly loaded, so make sure that you have at least 1GB of free storage on your device. Remove temporary or unnecessary files and reboot the device and then the taskbar icons should be there. In some cases, a system restart isn’t even required, as the icons return following an automatic refresh.

In fact, rebooting the system isn’t necessary even if you want to kill the explorer process. This is a workaround that forces the taskbar to reload the icons that it must display, and doing this is obviously much faster and more convenient than rebooting the computer because you’re not losing anything and you can continue working after the problem is fixed.

There are multiple ways to do this, and one of them comes to this (press enter after each command):

taskkill /f /im explorer.exe

explorer
You can also restart the explorer process by pressing:
CTRL + SHIFT + Right click on taskbar > Exit Explorer
Next, you need to click:
Task Manager > File > Run new task > explorer.exe
After killing the explorer process, you should see the taskbar going away completely and features like Night light disabling.

Removing certain software could also help, as some users claim that Google Drive File Stream is known for causing such issues. I can’t confirm this, however, as I’ve never experienced problems with Drive File Stream, but if this works, make sure you drop us a line at the end of the article.

In many cases, a simple reboot fixes the bug, but it then keeps coming back just because the reboot itself only removes the temporary files and thus frees up some disk space. When the disk gets full again, the bug returns, so freeing up space manually is the first thing you should try.

Scanning the drive for errors is another recommended step, as corrupt files, such as the icon cache, could also cause similar problems. Some said that the taskbar icons come back after a few minutes, but this of course doesn’t happen to everybody, and waiting is clearly not a solution.

All in all, there’s no guaranteed fix for this problem because it has different causes, but the aforementioned steps could come in handy when trying to deal with it. As I said, the bug happens on all Windows 10 versions, and judging from reports posted by users online, it takes place mostly on devices with limited storage, which once again confirms that freeing up space is once easy way to resolve it.

Office 2013 includes a feature called Office Upload Center and it always shows up in the notification area of the Taskbar. Here’s how to get rid of it.

Microsoft introduced a new feature in Office 2010 called the Office Upload Center and it has come along with Office 365 and 2016. Especially if you’re dealing with several documents, spreadsheets, and PowerPoints during your work day.

However, if you rarely use it, or don’t need it at all, you might not want to it taking up room on the Taskbar. Removing it simple, you just need to know where to go in the Settings menu.

Microsoft started rolling out Chat from Microsoft Teams to Windows 11 build 22000.100.

This includes a new Chat flyout right off the taskbar as well as an overall Teams desktop experience architected for optimized performance and the Windows 11 design language. You can remain connected to the people you care about with chats and video calls from the convenience of your Windows 11 PC, while they can participate from any device with Microsoft Teams: desktop, mobile, or even just a web browser.

With Chat from Microsoft Teams, you can connect to friends and family from your PC regardless of what computer or phone or tablet they are using—iOS, Android, PC or Mac. Built right into the Windows taskbar, you can use Microsoft Teams to connect for free via video and phone calls or chat—no need to look at your phone.

You’ll be able to sign in, add contacts, and connect via individual and group chats.

When you want to reach out to someone, it’s as simple as clicking the Chat icon (Win+C) in the Taskbar. At a glance, you’ll see your most recent individual and group conversations and be able to respond or start a new chat or call. Just like the Start menu, you can pop open Chat at any time – it doesn’t matter what other windows you have up – to kick off a communication and it will then dismiss. You can open the full windowed experience by clicking “Open Microsoft Teams” from the Chat flyout or launching it directly from the Start menu or Search.

Starting with Windows 11 build 22000.132, Chat from Microsoft Teams is now available. Microsoft is also excited to begin rolling out one-to-one and group audio and video calling, with many of the features that you’ve come to expect. You can create and join meetings. You can toggle your microphone and camera on or off and choose your preferred speakers, mic, and camera with device settings. You can manage meeting information and options. You can share your screen, see the roster of participants, admit meeting participants from the lobby, chat and see people’s video in a gallery view. Microsoft is excited to bring this experience to a growing network of people!

Starting on October 5th, all Windows 11 users can start using Chat from Microsoft Teams on Windows. It is a signature, lightweight experience brought right to the Taskbar to let Teams personal account users quickly start a video call or chat with friends and family. However, if you are one of those who use it just occasionally or not at all, you can remove it entirely from the taskbar. You can even uninstall the Microsoft News app.

Fortunately, removing it from the taskbar is a quick and painless operation that takes only a few seconds. So, without further ado, let’s remove Microsoft News from the taskbar swiftly.

Why You Would Want to Remove Microsoft News

Microsoft News makes every effort to provide the most up-to-date news and other information. This isn’t always the case, though. It can also display irrelevant news and information on occasion.

If you have a lot of objects on your taskbar, though, eliminating it can free up some room for other things.

Great for a practical joke on a coworker

One day my kids were playing on my computer and before I had a chance to kick the off, they managed to change some settings in Windows 10. I could tell immediately because my taskbar looked completely different.

Instead of the normal display of just small icons, it was showing text and icons. Each program on the taskbar was now taking up 5 times the space as before.

In addition, if I had multiple instances of one program open, each instance would take up its own slot. Luckily, this was an easy fix. In this article, I’ll show you how to remove the text in taskbar icons so that it only shows the icons and takes up less space.

Remove Icons from Taskbar

First, right-click on the taskbar and choose Taskbar settings.

How to remove the microsoft store icon from the taskbar in windows 10

Scroll down to the bottom until you see the Combine taskbar buttons heading and a drop-down below that.

In my case, it had been set to Never, which is why I was seeing all the text in the taskbar buttons. You can select from When taskbar is full or Always, hide labels.

The one that works for me is Always, hide labels. This makes the taskbar look much cleaner and saves a lot of space. Any program that has multiple instances open will show up as stacked instead of separately.

How to remove the microsoft store icon from the taskbar in windows 10

If you want to save even more space, you can also toggle the Use small taskbar buttons option on the settings screen. This shrinks down the icons and taskbar to about half the size. I find that a bit too small, so I don’t enable it.

Note that if you have multiple displays, you can control this setting for the other taskbars, if you have them enabled.

How to remove the microsoft store icon from the taskbar in windows 10

That’s about it. Most people won’t run into this problem very often, but if you do, you know how to fix it. Also, it’s a pretty safe and simple tweak that you can use as a practical joke to bother someone who isn’t very computer savvy. Enjoy!

Sometimes, installed applications on Windows may run on Windows startup i.e. Adobe Acrobat, Skype, etc. Likewise, installed applications may pin themselves on the Windows taskbar. These applications overwrite system settings thus even if you remove them from the taskbar, they would pin themselves again when the PC is restarted. Though pinned applications on the taskbar are easy to access but if they are in bulk (forming clusters), they may slow down the PC boot time, influence battery life, and generally affect the execution framework. Sometimes, it is also annoying to see multiple applications keep pinning themselves on your taskbar that sabotages your home interface.

Sometimes, users may not be allowed to make changes to the already pinned applications. This setting could be set by the very program that is constantly pinning itself to the taskbar. You may fix this by doing the following:

Now you will be able to make changes to the taskbar settings. You are not done yet! Go through the following method to get rid of this problem, once and for all.

Modify DefaultLayouts.xml

Windows stores settings for its applications, features, or elements in the system files (normally hidden). The taskbar is a Windows element therefore, its settings are also stored in system files. To be exact, its settings file named as DefaultLayouts.xml is located in AppData folder of Windows 10. Settings are stored in the form of code. Many users resolved the concerning problem by removing code lines from this file, specifically for applications that pin themselves automatically to the taskbar. Please go through the following steps to do the same:

  1. Click Start, search File Explorer and open it. How to remove the microsoft store icon from the taskbar in windows 10Opening File Explorer

  • Once done, click File >Save to save changes. How to remove the microsoft store icon from the taskbar in windows 10Save Changes
  • Restart your PC. This method will surely fix your problem.
  • It is also a good practice to disallow applications to have administrative access because in the opposite case, they tend to alter system settings without the user’s permission (as they don’t need them anymore). In such a case, the probability of problems like this one becomes very high. Therefore, our suggestion is to only allow an application with admin privileges after proper consideration to avoid these kinds of problems.

Most PC users prefer pinning their favorite programs to the taskbar for quick and easy access. In addition to mouse, programs pinned to the taskbar can also be launched using keyboard shortcuts.

Icons for some of the programs out there are outdated and they don’t look nice on a modern operating system like Windows 10. Also, users who have heavily customized their Windows 10 desktop might also want to change the taskbar icons for pinned programs to match the desktop.

Changing taskbar icons of programs is relatively easy and can be done without the help of third-party applications.

Please note that it’s not possible to change the icons for apps pinned to the taskbar at this moment. You can change the taskbar icons for classic desktop programs only. We will update this guide if and when we come across a way to easily change taskbar icons for apps.

Change taskbar icons for programs in Windows 10

Complete the given below directions to change the icon of a program pinned to Windows 10 taskbar.

Step 1: Pin your favorite programs to the taskbar. To do so, when a program is running, simply right-click on its taskbar icon, and then click Pin to taskbar option.

Step 2: Next is changing program’s icon on the taskbar. Right-click on the program’s icon on the taskbar to see the jump list.

Step 3: On the jump list, right-click on the name of the program and then click Properties (refer to the picture). This will program’s properties.

Step 4: Under the Shortcut tab, click Change Icon button to open Change icon dialog.

NOTE: If you cannot see the Shortcut tab, it’s likely because you have not pinned the program to the taskbar as mentioned in Step 1 of this guide.

Step 5: Click the Browse button to browse to the icon file that you would like to use as program’s taskbar icon, select the icon file and then click Open button. Click OK button.

Remember that the icon that you would like to use must be in .ico format. If you have an image file, use free online services or tools to convert images to .ico format.

Step 6: Finally, click Apply button to change the taskbar icon of the program. If the old icon is still appearing, please sign out and then sign in or reboot your PC once.

To restore the original icon for the program, simply unpin the program from the taskbar and then pin it again. Simple as that!

Windows 10: The weather and news widget feature is enabled by default and every time you move your mouse cursor over this widget, it pops up with a box full of news stories and sports scores from Microsoft News.

Microsoft recently added a weather and news widget on the taskbar to offer users a quick way to access latest news around the world. Microsoft says this feature “provides easy access to information that’s important to you, without the distraction of switching between apps, websites, and other devices.”

While this feature does offer a good way to get a quick glance at what is happening around world, it could be annoying for some people as every time you move your mouse cursor over this widget, it pops up with a box full of news stories, sports scores, and other information from Microsoft News. The feature is by default enabled and you can disable it.

Microsoft even allows you to edit your location to get updates on weather conditions and you can also personalise your news feed. There are also options to check information on traffic, finance and more. However, if you are someone who doesn’t want to look at this widget at all, then you can follow the steps below to remove it.

Windows 10: How to remove weather and news widget from taskbar

Step 1: First, just right-click on the blank space on the taskbar and select News and interests.

Step 2: Once you open it, just click on the “Turn off” option to remove the weather and news widget from the taskbar.

Note: The process to turn on news and interests widget is similar. You can right-click on the taskbar > select “News and interests” > Show icon and text.

Those who don’t want to completely remove the widget can opt for “Show icon only” feature. This will display a smaller widget, which will take less room on your taskbar.

If the Microsoft rewards badge is showing constant notifications, follow these steps to remove Microsoft rewards from the Start menu.

Windows 10 shows a little badge (medallion icon) on top of the Start menu to encourage users to participate in the Microsoft rewards or bing rewards. In case you don’t know, the Microsoft reward program gives you points for using Bing search. Once you earn enough points, you can redeem those points in select local or online stores. For example, you can redeem the points to buy Xbox Game Pass membership, Xbox Live Gold, Xbox console, console, etc.

How to remove the microsoft store icon from the taskbar in windows 10

The problem is, Microsoft rewards program is only available in select few regions. How to remove the microsoft store icon from the taskbar in windows 10
    5. Changes are saved automatically.
    6. Close the Settings app.

From now, you will not see the Microsoft rewards badge or medallion icon in the Start menu. If you want to, you can also stop Windows from showing search results from your work or school account. Just turn off the “Work or school account” option under Cloud Search Content.

To revert the changes and show the Microsoft rewards icon in the Start menu, follow the same steps but turn on the switch under Microsoft Account in step 4.
