A BITCOIN trader claims she enlisted the help of hackers to recover £129,000 worth of crypto off her old computer after she forget her wallet ID.

Rhonda Kampert, from Illinois, was granted the stroke of luck last year and claims she now has assets worth £31,000 each.

The mother first dipped her toe investing back in 2013 when crypto was considered an unknown quantity.

At the time Bitcoin was worth £60 each and Rhona decided that it might be worth a punt.

“I used to listen to a radio talk show and they started talking about crypto and Bitcoin so I got interested,” she told the BBC.

“Back then buying it was so complicated but I fumbled my way through the process and bought my coins.”

Rhonda said she ended up spending some of her digital money over the next 12 months and soon forget about it.

But in 2017, as Bitcoin started to rise in value, she remembered her purchase and quickly logged back into her own device.

However, she soon discovered that she was missing some of the login details as the “awful” reality of her lost fortune set in.

“I realised then that my printout had missed some digits on the end of my wallet identifier.

“I had a piece of paper with my password but no idea what my wallet ID was,” Rhonda said.

“It was awful. I tried everything for months but it was hopeless. So I kind of gave up.”

FORGOTTEN TREASURE

Come 2021, the prices of Bitcoin soared above £36,000 and it seemed like there would be no hope of getting her lost investment back.

But with fresh determination, Rhona began surfing the internet for solutions and stumbled across father and son crypto duo Chris and Charlie Brooks.

“After talking to the guys online for a while I trusted them enough to hand over all the details I could remember. Then I waited,” she explained.

“Eventually we sat down together on a video call and watched everything happen. Chris opened the wallet and there it was. I just felt so relieved!”

What is Bitcoin?

BITCOIN got you baffled? Here’s what you need to know:

  • Bitcoin is a virtual currency
  • It’s traded between people without the help of a bank
  • Every transaction is recorded in a public ledger, or “blockchain”
  • Bitcoin is created by mining
  • Mining involves solving difficult maths problems using computer processors
  • Bitcoin can be traded anonymously, which can make it a popular way of funding illegal activities
  • The value of Bitcoin fluctuates wildly
  • Bitcoin is one of many different cryptocurrencies, but by far the most popular

Rhonda discovered a wallet of three-and-a-half Bitcoin which was worth £129,000.

She decided to gift her new heroes a cut of 20 percent and used a further £7,000 to help her daughter through college.

Rhona says she has since learnt from her mistake and has decided to keep the rest of her Bitcoin securely locked in a hardware wallet – with the login pin close at hand.

Now she hopes the coins will soar in value again and enable her to create a retirement fund.

She added her main motivation is to quit her day job as a trader in stocks and cryptocurrencies.

The risks of buying with cryptocurrencies

Investing and making a purchase in cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin is risky:

Their value is highly volatile and City watchdog the Financial Conduct Authority has warned investors should be prepared to lose all their money.

Investing in cryptocurrencies is not a guaranteed way to make money.

You should also think carefully about making purchases with a cryptocurrency.

For example, Bitcoin has had wild price fluctuations in recent months and the price can change on an almost hourly basis.

The price of a Bitcoin was at $40,258 on January 9, according to Coindesk, but fell to $34,214 just three days later.

That’s a 15% drop.

These price swings are risky for a business as you could sell an item for a Bitcoin at one price and the value may drop soon after, leaving you with less money from a sale.

Similarly, the price of Bitcoin has soared by more than 21% since the start of this week so it can be hard for a shopper to get an accurate idea of the price of an item if its value changes on a daily basis.

While Rhona has learnt from learnt from her investments, others have been less fortunate.

One trader revealed he woke up to find he had lost nearly $500,000 on a cryptocurrency scam.

And another said he has claimed he convinced his aunt to invest £150,000 in Shiba Inu crypto – only for her lose tens of thousands of dollars in 24 hours.

Buying any cryptocurrency is incredibly risky.

With any investment, there is a risk that the value of your money could go down as well as up. That means you should only invest money you can afford to lose.

Crypto can be riskier than other investments because they are volatile and speculative – their price often rising and falls very quickly, sometimes seemingly for not reason.

Method 3: Use Password Reset Disk

A Windows password reset disk is a specially created disk (or USB flash drive for that matter) that easily restores access to Windows if you’ve forgotten your password. It’s a quite handy tool to take if you tend to forget your password. Keep in mind that Windows password reset disk is usually only useful for local Windows passwords.

It doesn’t matter how many times you change your password afterwards, this disk will always allow you to create a new password. Password reset disk is a great password recovery tool if you ever forget your password, however anyone who possesses this disk will be able to access your Windows account at any time (even if you change your password) so please store it in secure location not available to any unauthorized access.

If you have a Windows password reset disk you can use it to reset a lost Windows password. The main problem with this approach is that you need to create this password reset disk before your password is lost. If you are looking for a way to create a Windows password reset disk please follow this tutorial.

If you have the reset disk already, you can easily continue the password reset procedure:

  1. Boot your Windows system
  2. At the Windows 10 login screen, click on your account, type your password incorrectly and press enter
  3. Now the “reset password” option will appear after a failed log in attempt.
  4. Use this option and when asked provide the path to your password reset disk

Forgetting the administrator password for your computer can be a big problem, so you should know how to reset your Windows 10 administrator password if you lose it.

Instructions in this article apply exclusively to computers running Windows 10. It is also possible to reset the administrator password on Windows 7 and Windows 8.

What Is a Windows 10 Administrator?

The administrator is the user in charge of a computer. Any Windows 10 device will let you create administrator accounts and standard accounts. Standard account users can access software without materially changing it, while administrator account users can make changes to your computer and how it functions.

On personal devices, the person who sets up the computer is designated as the administrator. For business devices, the administrator is often someone in the IT department. When a standard account user tries to do something they’re not explicitly allowed to do, they are either blocked from doing so or required to provide the administrator password.

If you log into your computer using an email address, that means you’re using a Microsoft account. If you use Skype, Hotmail, or any other Microsoft web service with the same email address as your username, then your password for those services will likely unlock your computer as well.

Before buying a second-hand device, make sure you’re given administrator access.

How to Tell If You’re a Windows 10 Administrator

To determine if you’re an administrator:

Press the Windows Key or select the Windows icon to open the Start menu, and then select the gear icon to open the Settings.

How to reset your forgotten password in windows 10

    Select Accounts.

How to reset your forgotten password in windows 10

Check under your name and email. It will say either Administrator or Standard.

If you share a computer with a spouse or a family member, it’s a good idea for you both to know the administrator password.

What to Do if You Forget Your Windows 10 Administrator Password

If you’re the administrator, there are a few ways you can retrieve or change the password:

    • Use a Windows password recovery tool.
    • If you’ve created a password reset disk, connect the device and follow the prompts.
    • Reset your Windows 10 password.

If all else fails, take a few guesses. While it’s not necessarily great password security to use the same words and ideas to generate personal passwords, we all do it. If there’s a common personal password you use on your devices, try it out and see if it works.

How to Reset Your Windows 10 Password

Select Forgot Password? on the sign-in screen of your Windows 10 device. You’ll be asked to answer some security questions or perform other verification steps, such as providing a verification code sent to your phone.

If you have a Standard account, you can request whoever set up the computer to grant you administrator privileges. If the person who set up the computer isn’t reachable, you can also install a fresh version of Windows 10, which will allow you to make yourself the administrator during setup.

Windows 10: local account vs Microsoft account

How to reset your forgotten password in windows 10

The main distinguishing factor is that Microsoft accounts use email addresses as the username. Also, a local account works only on the machine you create it on, while you may use the same Microsoft Account on any device you own, and on the Internet to access Microsoft services such as OneDrive or Office365.

Basic Windows 10 settings are also synced across devices that you sign in with the same account.

Another difference is that local accounts can only be attacked on the local machine, while Microsoft Accounts may be attacked online as well.

A Microsoft Account is required to interact with Windows Store. Last but not least, a Microsoft Account can never have a blank password, while a local account can.

If you still have access to the Windows 10 device, you can find out which account type you use in the following way:

    1. Use Windows-I to open the Settings application.
    2. Navigate to Accounts.
    3. There you should see listed whether the account in question is a local or Microsoft account. The Microsoft Account is listed with its email address.

    6. The next page lists all accounts, and whether they are local or Microsoft accounts.

    Resetting a Microsoft Account password

Microsoft puts Microsoft Accounts front and center on Windows 10 by making it the default option during setup. It is likely that the majority of users are signing in using Microsoft Accounts and not local accounts because of that.

Good news is that it is easy to reset the Microsoft account password.

How to reset your forgotten password in windows 10

You need to verify your identity on the next page. Microsoft lists options on the page that depend on information you provided the company with earlier.

You will see listed the primary email address associated with the account, but may also get options to use text, secondary email addresses or an application.

If you select email or text, Microsoft generates and sends a code to the email or phone number which is used to verify ownership of the account.

    Step 4: Enter Code

How to reset your forgotten password in windows 10

The code is a seven digit number that you need to enter on the next page. For that to work, you need access to your mobile phone or email account.

If you have enabled two-factor authentication — you should — you are asked to repeat the same step again, but with another verification option.
