What is a PDF File?

Created by Adobe in the 1990s, a PDF file is a “Portable Document Format” file that is typically used to distribute read-only documents to people. This type of file differs from a Word or Pages file, as other people cannot manipulate the layout of a page or change information unless given permissions. So it is a perfect way to preserve the layout, information, and text of a page.

This type of file was basically created for two main reasons:

  • To allow people to open a document on any system, without having to have the app or program that created the original document (All you need is a PDF reader)
  • Wherever someone opens a PDF file, the layout and look should be the same.

Save web page as PDF using a Chrome extension

There are many Chrome extensions for PDFs that can help you manage PDF files in different ways. And there are a bunch of them made for saving web page content in PDF format. Compared to the native method of saving web pages as PDF in Chrome, a Chrome extension usually offers much more control over the content you would like to save.

I personally like two extensions for this purpose, Print Friendly and PDF Mage. Both make it easier to only convert the content you need nothing extra, so I’ll recommend both of these so you may find the one that works best for you.

Print Friendly is specifically made for making printing content easier by excluding all the side content and only showing main content like images, title, and content body. If you want to convert a web page to PDF with only the main content, then this Chrome extension is perfect. It also lets you change font size, delete content, and change image size before converting.

How to save a web page as a pdf in google chrome

PDF Mage is a more interesting one. If you click on the extension button, it will open the web page in a new tab as a PDF that is also downloadable. However, if you right-click on the extension button and select “Save part of page as PDF”, then you’ll be able to individually select every element on the web page to create a custom PDF. The elements including icons, text, images, sidebar content, buttons, and pretty much everything on a page.

Ending thoughts

I think for most users, the native function of Chrome to save web pages as PDF should be more than enough. It lets you change the layout, exclude pages, change sheet size, and manage other basic settings. Although if you want more control over the content you want to convert to PDF, then getting a Chrome extension is a must.

If you just want to copy and paste an entire web page as is, maybe to create a duplicate page in WordPress, or just to have all of the information stored on a word processer such as Microsoft Word, a copy and paste job will work. Here is how you do it.

  1. Select everything that you want to copy, which in this case is everything. You can do this by going to the upper left corner of the page, holding down the left mouse button, and then scrolling all the way down to the bottom. You can also go to your browser, select “edit,” and then click on “select all.” Another easy way to do this is to press “Ctrl-A” on your keyboard.
  2. Copy everything. You can do this by clicking on the “edit” tab in your browser and then select “copy.” You can also right-click on your mouse and select “copy,” or just hit “Ctrl-c” on your keyboard.
  3. To paste everything you have selected and copied, simply go to the location to which you want to paste the page, hit “Ctrl-v” on the keyboard, or right-click on your mouse and select “paste.”

A Word on Formatting

Something to be aware of is that you can choose to paste only the text or an entire web page and then select if you want to keep the current formatting or change it to your own format.

Printing as a PDF – Google Chrome Only

Google Chrome allows you to print out the web page in PDF format, something other browsers don’t allow. To do this, click on the wrench icon in the top right corner of Chrome, select “print,” then “PDF,” and also “save as PDF.” You will have the entire web page copied as a PDF, which you can then use. Remember that using the “advanced” tab, you can also select if you want to copy all or just a part of a page. You can go from portrait or landscape mode.

Capturing All Page Content

Another method for copying an entire web page is to capture all of a page’s content. Here, you can go to the top left of your browser and hit “file” and then “save as” (or you can just hit ctrl-s on your keyboard to save it that way).

Whether you are using Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, or Internet Explorer, you can save the page either as “web page, complete” (text, images, scripts, and more) or “web page HTML only” (text only). In Firefox, these are called “all files” and “text files.” Choose the one that suits your needs, and then save it in the appropriate location for further use.

Taking a Screenshot

Although taking a screenshot probably is not the most useful approach, you can only capture so much at once, not to mention that what you copy will be an image file, not a text file, but it is fast and easy. If using Windows, simply hit “alt-prtscn”; if you are using a Mac, hit “Command+Shift+3”. You can then paste it into a new file.

Conclusion

There are multiple ways, as you can see, to copy an entire web page. Just remember that the method you choose will depend on what your end goal is.

Awesome! Everything works smoothly. I think you just saved my project!! THANKYOU. I used to split PDF with Acethinker PDF writer, free and works pretty well for me, share it here as an alternative method.

In the current versions, there is no “save” button. These instructions are obsolete.

I was using the very handy doPDF, the free PDF converter in Firefox to print out online receipts and sundry other things. Then a development on Chrome made me ditch that and come over to Google’s browser for the same jobs.

Google Chrome’s Print to PDF option is a basic built in functionality. But it is these little things that are making it win the battle of the browsers. Printing to PDF is a very useful failsafe to have around when there is no printer to be found. It’s also useful if you want to archive webpages for a later read. HTML doesn’t save so well; that’s where printing to PDF keeps the layout nearly intact.

So, without further ado let’s see where the Print to PDF option can be found. Here are three short and fast ways:

1. Type chrome://print in the Address Bar

2. Click on the Wrench icon and then click on Print.

3. Right click on the webpage that you want to print to PDF and click on Print.

You will get a screen similar to this:

How to save a web page as a pdf in google chrome

You have all your installed printers listed here. Click on the Destination dropdown and select Print to PDF. You have a choice of Portrait or Landscape modes. Select all or select the page numbers you want to print. A few page viewing controls allow you to preview the page. That’s it! Click on Print, and choose a destination to save the PDF file.

The Print to PDF option is a default feature of the latest stable version of the browser. It is very basic but try it out and let us know about its usefulness.

A Step-By-Step Guide on How to Convert Chrome HTML to PDF

Without further ado, let us now have a look at how you can convert Chrome HTML to PDF using PDFelement software.

Step 1. Open HTML file in Chrome

Begin by opening the HTML file in your Chrome browser. When it is open, head to the top right and click on three dots and choose the “Print” option.

Step 2. Print Chrome HTML to PDF

On choosing the “Print” option, the print menu will display the print settings. Under “Destination,” select “Wondershare PDFelement.” Next, set the pages, the number of copies that you want, and color before clicking on the “Print” button. If you want more settings on quality and layout, then click on the “More settings” icon, otherwise proceed to the next step.

Step 3. Convert Chrome HTML to PDF

Now the HTML file should open the PDFelement. Scroll through it to ensure that you have captured all the pages that you wanted. Lastly, to convert the HTML to PDF to your computer, click on “File” at the home menu and then choose the “Save As” option. Select a folder, then enter a file name and choose file type as PDF and then save the Chrome HTML document to PDF.

Google Chrome may be used to display PDF documents; the feature is included natively in the web browser, which means that it does not require third-party tools or extensions to function.

PDF viewing functionality is basic and while that is fine for going through a PDF document, it lacks when it comes to everything else.

Google has been working on an update for the integrated PDF Viewer, and it has been overdue, considering that web browsers such as Firefox provide a much better experience when it comes to viewing PDFs in the browser.

Right now, Chrome users may use the viewer to zoom in and out, print the document, and change its orientation. Compared to Firefox, which has a table of contents, automatic zooming, or quick jump functionality, it is lacking.

The Chrome PDF viewer update will change that. It is currently available behind a flag in all recent versions of the web browser, including Chrome Stable. The update introduces a table of content, two-page view option, quick jump support, and more.

Enable Chrome’s new PDF Viewer

How to save a web page as a pdf in google chrome

  1. Load chrome://flags/ in the browser’s address bar. Alternatively, load chrome://flags/#pdf-viewer-update directly and skip the second step.
  2. Search for PDF Viewer.
  3. Set the PDF Viewer Update flag to Enabled.
    • The PDF Viewer Update description: When enabled, the PDF viewer will display an updated UI with new options and features.
    • It is available for all desktop versions of Google Chrome.
  4. Restart Google Chrome.

The new PDF viewer is active immediately in the Chrome web browser. You will notice the difference right away thanks to the new table of contents sidebar that it displays when it is activated.

How to save a web page as a pdf in google chrome

A click on the menu icon on the right side of the toolbar displays the new “two page view” option that you may activate to display two sheets side by side.

Chrome Canary users may enable PDF Viewer Presentation Mode furthermore to unlock a full screen PDF viewing mode. Just use the shortcut F11 in the PDF viewer in Google Chrome to toggle the feature.

Full mode hides the browser UI when it is activated.

Now You: do you use the PDF viewer of your browser, or a third-party program? (via Techdows)

Some PDF files are huge, and there are situations when we only need a small part of a PDF for our purposes. For example, we might need to extract only one table from a document which contains more than 300 pages. Instead of converting the whole document into an editable format, we can first extract a specific page that contains the table we need, and then continue with the conversion.

There are a lot of PDF splitters around that help users extract parts of PDF. Today we’ll introduce one which is not completely safe, but you probably already have it installed on your computer. That is the Google Chrome browser.

The first step requires you to open your PDF in Chrome. You can do it simply by dragging the PDF to any spot on a new tab in Chrome.

How to save a web page as a pdf in google chrome

When the file opens, click on the Print button in the top right corner or press CTRL + P on the keyboard.

How to save a web page as a pdf in google chrome
From the Destination drop-down menu choose Chrome’s internal PDF printer (Save as PDF).

How to save a web page as a pdf in google chrome

Below enter all pages you want the new PDF to contain. If you want to save all the pages as PDF, click on All. But if you need only certain pages, click on Custom and select the page range. It can be a single page, a range of pages or both. If you want to print only one page, format the number like this 3-3.

Click Save and that would be it. The new document is right and ready for use.

Splitting pages with Google Chrome on a mobile device

The trick we explained above works easily on any computer but it is hard to do that on a mobile device. The easiest way to split PDF into separate files on a mobile phone or tablet is with mobile app. Here you can download for free the app that will split PDF file into separate files.

PDF Splitter app works only on Android devices and it is free to use. There is no limit on the number of files you can split. The steps are very easy: upload the PDF from your device or import it from the Google Drive or Dropbox. Use long touch to select the split page and tap on Split button. The file will be split into two smaller files, exactly between the pages you selected.

I am not sure about you, but every time I came across a great tutorial on the Web, I will convert the content to a pdf file and keep it for future reference. Some of you might be pondering why I am wasting my time converting it to pdf since I can just bookmark the site. There are several reasons for this: firstly, I am not always connected to the Web, so if I need the information immediately, I won’t be able to access it. Secondly, there is no guarantee that the site will forever be there for me. It could be available today and disappear the next day (we’ve seen too much of this, don’t we?)

If you are like me, and are also using Google Chrome, you are in luck, here are several PDF extensions that you can use to make the whole conversion process much easier and faster.

1. Save As PDF

This is my favorite extension for pdf conversion. In my experience with several other extensions, this is the best, in terms of the speed and quality of conversion.

After installing the extension, you will see an icon at the toolbar. When you come across any webpage that you want to convert to pdf, simply click on the button and it will start the conversion immediately. The conversion is fast (typically less than 5 seconds) and it runs in the background without disrupting you from your work.

Save As PDF also comes with plenty of configuration options (in fact, it is the only pdf extension that comes with configuration option). Things you can configure including the page size, page format, page margin and whether it should convert javascript, images and background. The best of all, it allows you to set a password for your converted pdf file.

2. PDFmyURL

Instead of an icon in the toolbar, the PDFmyURL icon appears in the URL bar. Similarly, on a page that you want to be converted to pdf, just click on the icon and it will do all the work in the background.

The speed of conversion is rather fast, but it is not able to convert images properly for sites that are using lazy loading. In addition, it seems to add an extra margin to the four sides of the page, which make the file size bigger.

3. Web2PDFConverter

Web2PDFConverter is yet another pdf converter extension for Google Chrome. One of its unique feature is the ability to view your converted PDF files in Google Docs. You can then choose to save the pdf file in your Google Docs and free up storage space on your computer.

How to save a web page as a pdf in google chrome

One annoyance with Web2PDF is that during conversion, it takes control of the browser and prevents you from doing any other things. You won’t be able to switch to other tabs, or even other applications. Doing so will terminate the conversion process. In term of user-friendliness, this is definitely the worst in my opinion.

How to save a web page as a pdf in google chrome

We’ve all downloaded files from the web to our computer. However, if you’d rather download files directly to your Google Drive account, there’s an extension for Google Chrome that allows you to do just that.

Google’s Save to Google Drive extension allows you to save downloaded files directly to your Google Drive account, as well as save webpages to Google Drive as images, HTML files, or even Google documents. If you’re using the Google Drive desktop client for Windows or macOS, you can save downloaded files directly to your local Google Drive folder and they will be uploaded to your Google Drive account automatically. However, using the Google Drive client uses space on your computer, which isn’t ideal if you’re low on space. The Save to Google Drive extension can also be useful If you’re using Ubuntu Linux, which does not have an official Google Drive client.

NOTE: The Save to Google Drive extension saves files to the Google account you are signed in to in Chrome. So, switch to the Google Chrome profile that corresponds to the Google Drive account you want to save files to before using this extension.

We’ll show you how to install, set up, and use the Save to Google Drive extension in Chrome for Windows, but it works the same way on Chrome for macOS and for most common Linux distributions, such as Ubuntu.

Install and Set Up the Save to Google Drive Extension

To install the extension, visit the Save to Google Drive extension page in Chrome and click “Add to Chrome”.

You can extract pages from PDF using Google Chrome by saving the pages as a separate PDF file. We’ll show you how.

This is especially useful when you only need to convert a few pages of a very large document with our PDF to Excel converter, or if you want to reduce the size of the PDF for some other purpose.

In this example, I’ll extract pages from a PDF version of Nestlé Group’s Consolidated Financial Statements for 2016.

The process I’ll be illustrating is identical in Opera and quite similar in Firefox, Safari and Internet Explorer.

Step 1

Find your PDF document in Windows Explorer, then right-click on it and select Open With -> Google Chrome .

Step 2

Once your PDF is open in Chrome, click the Print icon in top right hand side of the window.

Step 3

When the Print dialogue appears, click Change in the Destination section.

Step 4

On the next screen, select Save as PDF .

NB: Don’t use Microsoft Print to PDF as your PDF will be saved as an image rather than a searchable PDF.

Step 5

Enter the page numbers you want to extract in the highlighted text box.

As an example, if you want pages 8 to 10, you would enter 8-10 . Or, if you want pages 12 and 14, you would enter 12, 14 . Now, if you want to be a total maverick, you could combine the two with 8-10, 12, 14 . This would give you pages 8, 9, 10, 12 and 14 in one PDF document.

Step 6

Press Save then you’ll be asked to give your new PDF a name and a folder for it to be saved in.

Congratulations, you’re done! You can now convert your PDF to Excel, CSV, XML or HTML.

This article explains how to enable or disable the Chrome PDF viewer. It includes reasons you might want to turn the feature on or off.

How to Turn the Chrome PDF Viewer On and Off

Google Chrome’s built-in PDF file viewer is turned on by default. It is convenient if you want to view PDFs as quickly as possible, but if you prefer to download copies of PDF files, you can turn off the Chrome PDF viewer to make those downloads happen automatically.

The following instructions can be followed by Chrome users on all major operating systems, including macOS, Microsoft Windows, and Linux.

Open your Chrome web browser and select the three vertical dots in the upper-right corner.

You can do this from an already open Chrome window. Don’t worry, you won’t lose the web page you’re on—everything will open in a new tab.

To test the setting change, select a PDF document file in Chrome. If you turned on the setting, you should see the file download to your computer. If you turned off the setting, the PDF should open in a new tab Chrome.

It’s not necessary to close and reopen your Chrome browser for the setting change to work, but if you experience problems, restart the browser. If you still experience problems, make sure you’ve updated to the latest version of Chrome.

If you turned off the setting so you download the PDF file instead of opening it in Chrome, the file will open in your default PDF program.

If you’d like to change your default PDF program, check out the best free PDF readers for Windows and Mac.

Reasons to Turn On the Chrome PDF Viewer

    • You want fast and instant access to PDF files.
    • You don’t always necessarily want to download every PDF file that you click on to view.
    • You don’t plan on editing any of the PDF files you open and only need access to the basic options (download, print, zoom in, zoom out, etc.)
    • You don’t favor any other PDF programs over Chrome’s PDF viewer.

Reasons to Turn Off the Chrome PDF Viewer

    • You want a saved copy of the PDF files you open in Chrome.
    • You often forget to download PDF files after opening it in Chrome, then find yourself having to relocate the PDF file link at a later time.
    • You want to eliminate the step of having to view the PDF file in Chrome first.
    • You want to automate the download process.
    • You prefer to use a different PDF program to view files and/or edit them.

How to save a web page as a pdf in google chrome

If the PDF viewer is enabled, but you still can’t view PDFs, delete temporary internet files in Chrome. Clearing your cache, cookies, and other browser data might fix the problem.

To see comments on a PDF in Chrome, open the PDF and select the three dots in the upper-right corner of the PDF viewer, then select Annotations to enable comments. You can’t add your own comments, but you can write on PDFs in Microsoft’s Edge browser.

Open the PDF and enable full-screen mode in Chrome. On a PC, press Fn+F11, or select the three dots in the upper-right corner and choose Present. On a Mac, select the green circle in the upper-left corner of Chrome, or use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+Command+F.

Select the three dots in the upper-right corner of the PDF viewer, then choose Two page view. Select the Fit to page icon at the top to view both pages side by side.

You can’t open a PDF file in the Chrome mobile app. When you select a link to a PDF, the file will automatically download, and you can view it in a mobile PDF viewer app.
