How to save edited instagram photos without posting them

Unfortunately, there’s no built-in method for saving your edited Instagram photos without posting them first. However, with this neat trick, you can add Instagram filters to your photos and save them locally to your phone without actually having to post them.

Why Would I Want to Do This?

While you could just use a photo editing app or the built-in tools on iOS and Android to make edits and add filters to your photos, Instagram makes the whole editing process pretty easy and addictive. Plus, there could be a specific Instagram filter that you’re in love with and want to use on some of your photos, but don’t necessarily want to post those photos on your Instagram page.

With that said, there’s an easy trick that you can do if you’re wanting to use Instagram’s own editing tools on some photos, but don’t want to actually post them up.

The Trick: Use Airplane Mode

Doing this involves temporarily enabling airplane mode on your phone. You’re technically still posting the photo to your Instagram page (or at least attempting to), but having airplane mode on will result in a failed upload. However, the photo will still be saved locally to your phone since there was at least an attempt to post it up.

To do this, pick the photo that you want to edit and make your edits (or add a filter to it) like you normally would, and then hit “Next” in the top-right corner of the screen.

When you get to the screen where you can type in a description, add a location, and more, enable airplane mode. You can do this on iPhone by swiping up from the bottom to bring up Control Center, or swiping down from the top on Android to access the toggle shortcuts.

Go back to Instagram and tap on “Share”.

Obviously, the photo won’t get posted successfully, and you’ll see a small banner that says “We’ll try again once there’s a better connection.” At that point, your edited photo will get saved locally to your phone.

Next, simply tap on the “X” button to the right of that small banner to cancel the upload entirely.

Next, tap on “Remove” when the popup from the bottom appears. This will prevent Instagram from re-trying the upload once you turn off airplane mode.

After that, you can disable airplane mode and enjoy your Instagram-edited photo without actually having to post it to Instagram.

Over 100 million people around the world snap photos with Instagram on their phones now. If you like the look of Instagram filters but would rather not broadcast the photographs to the world every time you snap a picture, there’s actually a (semi-old) trick you can use to save the pics without sharing them (for iPhone users, at least): all you have to do is turn on “Airplane Mode.”

Instagram is a fast, beautiful, and fun way to share your photos with friends and family. Our service is not just a photo editing application, so iOS users do not have the ability to save filtered photos before sharing them.

The loophole is that you can have the photo save to your phone while preventing it from being beamed across the Web to Instagram’s servers. On the iPhone you can do this by simply turning off all your connections to the Web (both cellular data and WiFi). That’s what Airplane Mode does.

On your iPhone, go to “Settings” and flip “Airplane Mode” to “On”:

Now you simply use Instagram as you ordinarily would. Snap a photo, choose a filter, and then hit “Share” on the “Share Photo” page.

The share will fail since Instagram can’t connect to its servers and you’ll see a “Failed” message on your Instagram feed. Tap the delete icon to wipe any trace of your saved-but-not-shared photo:

When it comes to social media apps, Instagram has the best collection of filters and effects. With Instagram filters, even an amateur can edit photos and take them to another level in just a few taps. Besides a variety of amazing photo filters, you can use editing tools such as crop, combine photos, and adjust the angle. Photos edited on Instagram look highly professional and eliminates the need to use a dedicated photo-editing app.

That said, I often switch to Instagram just to apply a certain filter and make my photos more appealing. What if you just want to save an Instagram-edited photo without actually posting it to Instagram?

Fortunately, Instagram for iPhone now provides the ability to download edited photos without posting them. A new save button now appears at the top of the filter screen, letting you save the photo before you hit Next. This wasn’t possible earlier, a few workarounds were available though to get this done.

The freedom to use Instagram filters without posting is a welcome addition. This is something most users including me were looking for till now. What to Know

  • Tap Settings >Account >Original Photos and toggle Save Original Photos to the On position to save your own photos to your device.
  • You can bookmark other users’ photos for later reference, but Instagram provides no in-app way to download them.
  • Your best bet for a high-quality version of another user’s photo is to contact them directly and ask for one.

This article discusses how to save your own Instagram photos and bookmark those of other users.

How to Save Your Own Instagram Photos to Your Mobile Device

If you upload an existing photo to Instagram without using any of the in-app filter or editing features to make changes, you obviously already have a copy of it on your device.

But for those who snap photos directly through the app or upload existing ones with Instagram filters and editing effects applied to them, saving a copy of the finished product that gets posted can be easily and automatically done by turning on one simple setting.

Here’s how to do it:

From your profile tab, tap the menu button at the top.

Tap Settings.

How to save edited instagram photos without posting them

Tap Account.

How to save edited instagram photos without posting them

Choose Original Photos on iOS, or Original Posts on Android.

As long as this setting is turned on, all of your posts will be copied automatically as you post them into a new photo album or folder labeled “Instagram” in your mobile device’s photo album app.

This goes for all posts including those that you snap through the Instagram app, those that you upload from your device with no changes made to them and those that you upload from your device with filter effects and editing effects applied to them.

How to Save Other Users’ Photos in the App

Instagram has a saving feature built directly into the app. While it merely allows you to bookmark the photo or video post tab and not actually download anything to your device, it’s still better than nothing.

Previously, the only way you could really bookmark a photo, or video for that matter, from another user within the Instagram app was by liking it and then accessing your previously liked posts from the settings tab.

How to Use Instagram’s Save Tab

To save any post to your Saved tab, tap the bookmark icon in the bottom right corner. To get to this tab, tap the menu button from your profile page, and then Saved.

How to save edited instagram photos without posting them

No notification will be sent to the user who posted it.

The two big downsides to Instagram’s save feature are:

  • You need an internet connection to be able to revisit the saved post within the app
  • The saved image will disappear if the user who posted it deletes it. Remember, using the bookmark feature is just a link to the photo. Nothing gets saved to your account or your device.

On the other hand, if you want to follow the comments on a popular post, you can save the post and return to it later to read new comments, which is at least one very helpful way to use it.

Downloading Other Users’ Instagram Photos

If you’ve ever tried to right-click and Save As on an Instagram photo on your computer, or tried to do the equivalent on a mobile device by tapping and holding down on a photo while viewing it in a mobile web browser, you probably wondered why nothing pops up and allows you to download or save that image.

Instagram is fine with you saving copies of your own photos to your device or bookmarking them in the app because you own them, but it does not claim ownership of any content posted to the app, so it’s up to you to get permission from other users if you want to use their content.

Your best solution, then, to downloading another user’s photo? Just ask them for a copy.

How to save edited instagram photos without posting them

Instagram has launched a new Reels feature, thus expanding its content-hosting platform to include short-form videos in vertical scrolling layout, similar to how TikTok works. There are many ways you can share your Reels on Instagram but can you keep a Reel ready to be published ahead of time. That’s what we’re going to talk about in this post.

Can you save Instagram Reels without posting?

Yes. Instagram lets you record a Reels video and save it on your camera roll without needing to share it at the same time it’s created. This is possible if you save the Reels in your drafts which will stay inside the drafts until you post it or delete it in the future.

How many Reels can you save as drafts on Instagram

Similar to saving posts and stories for uploading later, you can save as many Reels as you can on Instagram. Saved drafts will be displayed alongside all your other Reels inside Reels tab on your profile but only you will be able to view them.

Can you repost other people’s Reels?

Technically, no. Unlike Instagram posts, someone else’s Reels cannot be reposted as your own Reels video. However, you can share others’ Reels inside your Stories section or as direct messages to individual users.

You can do so by opening a Reels video and tapping on the Share icon (the one shaped like a paper plane) and then selecting the ‘Add post to your story’ option when a menu pops up. You can share the Reels to a person you follow by tapping on the ‘Send’ button adjacent to the user’s name.

How to save Reels to draft for posting later

You can save your Instagram Reels for posting them later by moving them to drafts. Before doing this, you will have to first record a Reels video by opening the Stories camera and make all the necessary changes you need to do inside the video. You can also make more changes to this video at a later time, even after saving it as a draft.

Once you have recorded the video, tap on the right arrow to confirm the recording, and then tap on the arrow icon on the bottom right corner. Doing this will take you to the ‘Share’ screen which is the final stage before your Reels are uploaded online.

To save your Instagram Reels as a draft, tap on the ‘Save as Draft’ button at the bottom of the ‘Share’ screen. That’s it. You have successfully saved your Reels as a draft for future uploading.

Where can you find your Saved Reels

When you save Instagram Reels as a draft, the saved Reels will appear inside the Reels tab inside your profile alongside all the other Reels that you have uploaded in the past. You can, however, differentiate between your uploaded Reels and those saved as drafts as the latter will be available inside the ‘Drafts’ folder. Can you edit Reels that you saved in drafts?

Yes. You can edit the Reels you saved in drafts in a similar fashion to how you would edit posts and already-created Stories on Instagram.

How to edit saved Reels from your draft

To edit an already saved Reels video, you need to first get to your Reels section on Instagram. To do so, open the Instagram app, tap on the Profile tab at the bottom, and then hit the Reels tab.

Inside the Reels tab, tap on the Drafts box which will open up to show all the Reels that you have saved on Instagram. Tap on the Reels video you want to edit and when the ‘Share’ menu appears, tap on the ‘Edit’ button at the top right corner.

How to save edited instagram photos without posting them

Instagram makes it really hard to download photos to your computer without using their mobile app. But it is possible.

This article will show you how to do this in 3 quick steps.

Step 1: Find the Instagram photo you want to download.

Go to instagram.com and find the specific photograph. Click on it.

This will bring the photo up in its preview modal, floating on top of the person’s newsfeed, like this:

How to save edited instagram photos without posting themClick the image you want to bring up its preview modal.

Notice that the URL in Chrome’s address bar has changed. Instead of saying the person’s Instagram username, it will now say instagram.com/p/######### .

Every photo on Instagram has its own dedicated web address, and if you go directly to that address, it will just show the one photo without all the other photos in their newsfeed.

Since the photo’s address is now in the address bar, you can just refresh your browser by clicking the refresh button in your browser or using the control+r keyboard shortcut (command+r on Mac).

This will show you the photo’s unique page on Instagram.

Step 2: Get the Instagram photo’s URL so you can download it

Right-click the photo and choose “Inspect” from the dropdown. This will open up Chrome’s developer console.

Even though Chrome DevTools are designed for software developers, don’t be intimidated. You just need to click on a few specific buttons in order to find the photo.

First click on the “Sources” tab at the top.

How to save edited instagram photos without posting them

Then click on the VP folder to expand its contents.

Each photo is stored within its own folder. Start expanding these folders and you’ll eventually find the full-sized photo. Right click the file and click “open in new tab.”

Step 3: Download the Instagram photo to your computer

Now you can right-click the photo and choose the “save as” option.

This way, you will get the full-sized Instagram photo – the same photo that Instagram shows you in the Instagram mobile app. This isn’t a screenshot or a thumbnail – this is the full-sized image.

Congratulations! You got your image, and now you can do whatever you want with it.

Why does Instagram make it so hard to download these image?

Instagram wants for you to link back to their website instead of being able to link to the image directly. But Instagram doesn’t own these images – you or whoever took the photo owns it.

It is ridiculous that Instagram doesn’t just let you “right-click save as” the image like other websites (including freeCodeCamp.org) do.

But that’s what attention-greedy social media platforms do – they make it inconvenient to just download your image. They override your browser’s functionality using JavaScript.

Anyway, now you can download these images. It takes a bit of work, but once you get the hang of it, you won’t have to link directly to Instagram or use some screenshot tool to get these photos.

There are tools out there to download your Instagram photos in bulk. But if you’re just trying to download a specific photo, this is the fastest way to do it. You don’t need to install any tools or Chrome extensions.

And remember – if you didn’t take these photos, be sure to credit the photographer. Shout out to @RubenHarris for being my subject in this tutorial.

How to save edited instagram photos without posting them

Welcome to the quick tip series to deal with too many photos, too little time! Take these small steps during your metro commute to work, coffee break and alike… and make a big difference to overcome your digital photo chaos! Today we are talking about how to stop auto-saving your Instagram photos to your phone’s camera roll.

Are you a frequent Instagram user? Then probably your Instagram photos and videos are cluttering your camera roll and clogging up your phone memory. And in the end, do you really want to keep a copy of them in your photo collection?

I have some phone setting tips for iPhone and Android users to stop auto-save of Instagram photos on your camera roll, see and to decide what works best for you. And note that you can always download your Instagram photos and save them in a dedicated folder – check my blog post on this better organised solution.

How do you take and share your Instagram photos?

There two ways you take and post photos on Instagram:

  • You take a photo or a video from your native camera app on your phone and then share it through the Instagram app. In this case, the original is kept in your camera roll. Once you edit and post it through the Instagram app, you can choose whether or not to keep this new version.
  • You directly take a photo or video from Instagram app’s camera , edit and post it from there. The image quality will be less than what you have with your native camera, but for many users, it should be just enough. If you’re using the Instagram app’s camera, you can choose to save original version and/or new version. Or not to save anything at all.

When you turn off Save Original Photos, photos you take with your Instagram app’s camera will not be saved on your iPhone’s camera roll anymore.

However once you post it, that version will still be saved on the camera roll.

You want to get rid of original photo saving feature? Then go to your general device settings, go to Instagram and select Photos.

How to save edited instagram photos without posting them

Here’s what you need to decide:

  • When you select Never, Instagram will not be able to read and write from your camera roll. So, it won’t allow Instagram to save posted photos to the camera roll. If you use Instagram app’s camera and don’t want to save any photos, this is your option.
  • If you want to use your phone’s native camera app and post photos to Instagram from there, then you need to select Read and Write. But then be aware that both original and posted photos will again be saved on your camera roll.

Note that even if your iPhone saves the photos you post on Instagram, you can always manually delete them from Instagram album under your Photos app.

Instagram photo saving settings on Android

Go to your Instagram app, click on the top right menu and click on Settings at the bottom.

  • If you turn off Save Original posts, photos you take with Instagram app’s camera will not be saved on your iPhone’s camera roll. Remember, if you take your photos with your native camera app of your phone and share by Instagram, the original photo is always in your camera roll.
  • If you turn off Save posted photos and Save posted videos: photos and videos you post on Instagram will not be saved on your Android devices camera roll.

Instagram has always been about effortless photo sharing, never about uncompromised image quality. Your 12-megapixel iPhone photos may look nice on Instagram but look closer, and you’ll realize that all your uploads have been downscaled to fit 1080 pixels horizontally. The same goes for Instagram’s desktop app, which displays your uploads reduced to just 640 pixels wide.

If you want to avoid compression that occurs when uploading an image to Instagram in an unsupported resolution, follow the instructions laid out in this step-by-step tutorial.

Instagram image sizes

When you share a photo on Instagram, regardless of whether you’re using Instagram for iOS or Android, we make sure to upload it at the best quality resolution possible.

Things are a bit more complex than that, though. In Instagram talk, “the best quality resolution possible” really means up to a width of just 1080 pixels. Yup, 1080 pixels. You read that right.

If you upload a photo between 320 and 1080 pixels, no resizing will take place. As long as the aspect ratio is between 1.91:1 and 4:5, it’ll appear on Instagram without compression. Share a higher resolution image, and the system will size it down to 1080 pixels horizontally.

If the aspect ratio of your photo isn’t supported, it’ll get cropped to fit a supported ratio.

  • No processing: Photos with a width between 320 and 1080 pixels and a height between 566 and 1350 pixels, yielding an aspect ratio between 1.91:1 and 4:5.
  • Upscaling: If you share a photo at a very low resolution, meaning fewer than 320 pixels wide, Instagram will enlarge it to a width of 320 pixels.
  • Downscaling: Any images with a higher resolution than 1080 horizontal pixels or 1350 vertical pixels will be sized down by Instagram’s servers to a width of 1080 pixels.
  • Cropping: If your upload has an unsupported aspect ratio, Instagram will crop the image the best it can to fit a supported ratio (between 1.91:1 and 4:5).

This can all be very confusing, but don’t worry about a thing as we have you covered. Just follow along with us as we explain how to avoid compression when uploading your Instagrams.

How to upload photos to Instagram without compression

In order to avoid triggering Instagram’s downscaling algorithm that may result in compression artifacts, you must first resize your photo to Instagram’s preferred width of 1080 pixels and an aspect ratio between 1.91:1 and 4:5. Otherwise, Instagram will recompress and resize your image.

There are plenty of options on the App Store for resizing iPhone images. For the purpose of this tutorial, we’ll be using the free Image Size app, but you can use any app you like.

1) Open the Image Size app and tap the big white frame to add your desired picture from the Photos app.

2) Make sure pixel is selected and in the width and height box, enter one of the following:

  • For square images: 1:1 (1080 x 1080)
  • For landscape: 1.91:1 (800 x 418)
  • For portrait images: 4:5 (1080 x 1350)

As you can see that we aren’t exceeding Instagram’s maximum width of 1080 or maximum height of 1350, its compression algorithms should leave it untouched.

3) Tap the save arrow button to have the final Instagram-perfect resized image in your iPhone Camera Roll.

How to save edited instagram photos without posting them

And that’s it, you now have the correct version of your original image in the Photos library conveniently sized down to a width of 1080 pixels. All that’s left to do at this point is fire up the mobile Instagram app on your iPhone and share the resized image.

Because the image now fits the required dimensions, no compression will take place.

Of course, nothing prevents a power user from using pro tools on their Mac or Windups PC, such as Adobe Photoshop, Pixelmator, Affinity Photo, and so forth, for image resizing. Upon saving the sized-down version to the computer, you could quickly transfer the file to your iPhone via AirDrop, ready to be uploaded to Instagram.

Other guidelines to post images in high quality on Instagram

  • Don’t use the Instagram camera to take pictures. Use your phone’s built-in Camera app.
  • Don’t use filters or editing tools in the Instagram app. Edit your image beforehand and simply post it to Instagram.
  • Use JPEG (JPG) instead of PNG or HEIF.
  • Don’t add music to the image post on Instagram.
  • Use the Instagram app on your smartphone to post the image instead of other tools.

If you’re the type of person who cares a lot about image quality or you manage a business account on Instagram, a little bit of planning will go a long way toward ensuring your Instagrams look their best rather than exhibit those ugly compression artifacts.

Instagram has always been about effortless photo sharing, never about uncompromised image quality.

Instagram may be designed for smartphones, but you’ve probably noticed that the best photos have a distinctly non-camera-phone vibe to them. Savvy Instagrammers post high-quality DSLR or point-and-shoot photos instead. You can create a high-quality Instagram feed, too, with a little help from Dropbox and your iOS or Android device.

Step One: Transfer and pre-process your images

The goal is to get the photo off your camera and onto a phone or mobile device with the Instagram app installed. The first step starts with your camera.

Importing your photos

Transferring your photos to your computer only adds an extra minute or two, and has the added benefit of letting you use your computer to back up and organize your photos.

You can transfer your photographs from your camera to your PC with a card reader, or by connecting your camera directly to your computer. Copying the images into a folder is the quick-and-dirty way, but photo organizing software like Google’s Picasa will make it easier to locate your images quickly.

If you’re shooting RAW files with a DSLR, you should be using a more full-featured photo organizer like Adobe Lightroom.

Editing and cropping

You can edit photos on your computer before you post them to Instagram. If you don’t have a copy of Adobe Photoshop, you can use a number of free tools like Pixlr, Adobe Photoshop Express or GIMP.

Remember that images posted on Instagram are square. When cropping, set the editor to select an area with a 1:1 ratio.

How to save edited instagram photos without posting them

You can use free tools like Pixlr to crop and edit photos for Instagram. Just be sure to crop with a 1:1 ratio, as shown here.

While you can crop and resize in the Instagram app, you’ll probably get better results on your computer.

If you’re transferring a lot of photos, you can save storage space on your device by proactively resizing your images to 640×640 pixels—Instagram’s native size.

Step Two: Move your photos to your mobile device via Dropbox

The next step is to move the photos to a cloud service, which has the additional benefit of providing an off-site backup. We’re going to use Dropbox for this example, but any cloud storage account with a mobile app will do.

Set up Dropbox to receive your photos

On your computer, go to your Dropbox folder and create a new folder called “Instagram Photos.” Copy the desired photos into this folder.

How to save edited instagram photos without posting them

In Windows, copy or move the photos you want to share into your Instagram Photos folder inside the Dropbox folder.

When you open the app, you should see everything you’ve stored in your Dropbox folder, including your new directory of Instagram photos.

Unlike the desktop application, the mobile Dropbox app doesn’t automatically download files to your mobile device. Instead, it just allows you to view all the files you’ve stored in Dropbox.

If you’re using iOS, you’ll have to download the photos to use them with Instagram.

Navigate to your Instagram Photos folder in the Dropbox app. To download a photo, tap the small download icon in the bottom-right corner of the photo, then tap Save Image.

Android

With recent versions of Android, you don’t have to download the photos to your device to use them in Instagram.

If you have an older version of Android, though, you’ll have to download the files to your phone, as with iOS. This is also the case if you’re using BlueStacks to emulate an Android device on your PC.

Navigate to your Instagram Photos folder and find the photos you want to use. Tap and hold on the photo’s name, then select Export from the menu that opens up. From there, choose to save the picture to the SD card.

How to save edited instagram photos without posting them

In older versions of Android, you may need to export the photos from Dropbox to a local folder on your Android device.

Save the photo in your device’s Pictures folder—this will make it available in the Gallery. You can use this same procedure to export an entire folder at once.

Step Three: Post to Instagram

Now you’re ready to use Instagram to edit and post your photo. This process is nearly identical in both the Android and iPhone Instagram apps.

To begin, open Instagram and tap the blue ‘shutter’ button located directly in the center of the bottom bar. To the left of that button, you’ll see a button to open a saved image.

The button in the lower-left of the Instagram app’s add-photo screen, as shown here in iOS, lets you use an existing photo for a post.

Selecting photos in iOS

In iOS, you access saved images via an icon showing a thumbnail of the most recent image in your camera roll. Tap it, and photos will appear at the bottom of the screen, including those we transferred over from Dropbox.

Tap the photo you want to use, crop it (if necessary), and tap Next.

Selecting photos in Android

In Android, tap the saved-image button, which looks like a tic-tac-toe grid of nine squares.

If you have a recent version of Android, you’ll be presented with an option to choose where to look for your photos. You should see an option to use Dropbox.

If you don’t see an option to choose the source of the photos (or you don’t see the Dropbox icon), download the photos manually per the instructions above.

How to save edited instagram photos without posting them

In recent versions of Android, you’ll be able to select the what photo source you’d like to use in Instagram.

Tap the Dropbox icon, navigate to your Instagram Photos folder and select the photo you want to share.

In older versions of Android (or if you downloaded the photos to your phone manually), look for the photos in the Gallery.

After you select your photo, you can use the standard suite of Instagram editing tools and filters. Finally, post to your feed and prepare for a shower of Likes and admiring comments.

Have you ever shared something to Instagram and then wished you could fix a typo or choice of wording in your caption, or perhaps you’ve shared something and completely forgot to add your caption or hashtags in the first place? You’re not alone.

Instagram makes it possible for you to edit the captions of your photos and videos after they have already been posted to your profile. In this tutorial, we’ll show you the steps required to do so.

How to save edited instagram photos without posting them

What you need to know

Keep in mind that after you edit a caption on Instagram, you can continue to go back and change it over and over again. You’re not limited to editing only once.

Note that just like on Facebook and many other social networking services, Instagram reveals to other users when a caption has been edited. The “Edited” indicator appears when someone attempts to leave a comment on your media, and it’s intended as a common courtesy for your followers in case they notice something inconsistent when viewing your posts.

How to edit the caption of a photo on Instagram

Now that you know the circumstances surrounding editing the caption of a post on Instagram, you can follow these steps to move forward with editing your captions:

1) Find the post on your timeline or tap the profile tab at the bottom of the Instagram app and tap the post that contains the caption you wish you edit.

2) Tap the three dots button and choose the Edit option from the menu.

3) Tap inside the caption text box and make any changes you desire using the keyboard that appears.

4) Tap Done to save your changes.

You have successfully edited your Instagram media’s caption. If required, follow the same steps to remove the caption entirely.

You won’t always need to edit your Instagram captions, but it’s good to understand how to do it. After all, sometimes you post things in a rush, which leads to embarrassing typos and mistakes. Being able to quickly fix those mistakes before everyone sees them is a great privilege to have.

Besides the Instagram mobile app, you can also edit captions while using Instagram on a computer.

There are several methods you can use to save your Instagram stories. The best method will depend on how you want to save and use them once they’ve been saved.

Here are three ways to save your Instagram stories.

Check out the products mentioned in this article:

iPhone 11 (From $699.99 at Best Buy)

Samsung Galaxy S10 (From $599.99 at Best Buy)

How to save Instagram stories by archiving them on the mobile app

Archiving is an easy way to create a backup for your Instagram stories. The only catch is that you have to set it up beforehand — but once you do, you won’t have to worry about saving your stories in the future.

Here’s how to set it up:

1. Open the Instagram app on your iPhone or Android phone and log in, if necessary.

2. Toggle over to your profile (the person icon in the bottom toolbar).

3. Tap the three lines and select “Settings.”

4. Tap “Privacy” followed by “Story.”

5. Under “Saving” toggle on the option to save your Instagram stories to your archive (you can choose to save stories to your phone’s photo gallery from this screen as well).

When you turn on the archive option, you’ll be able to access your stories via the archive, which you can access by going to your profile, then tapping the three lines in the top-right corner of the screen, and selecting “Archive.”

How to save Instagram stories by downloading them to your phone

If you want to have your Instagram stories on your iPhone or Android phone, you can download them off the mobile app. If you have an iPhone you can save an entire story with multiple videos, but Android users will have to save each story individually.

Here’s how to do it.

1. Open the Instagram app and log in, if you aren’t already in your account.

2. Tap “Your Story” (located in the top-left corner of the screen) and view the story you want to download.

3. As it plays, tap the three dots and select “Save. “

4. Select “Save Photo/Video” to save that specific story, or to save all of your current stories as a single, vertical video, select “Save Story” (this option is only available on an iPhone — Android users will have to download each individual story).

You can also download stories right when you make them by pressing the download button (a downward facing arrow above a straight line) before posting.

How to save Instagram stories using a third-party app

As an alternative to using the Instagram app to auto-save your stories, you can also use a third-party, web-based app, like Embed Stories, to get it done.

With this app, you can embed your stories on websites to get more use out of them in different places.

Embed Stories also offers paid plans, which allow you to manage multiple Instagram accounts at once, and convert your stories into different formats.

Here’s how to use Embed Stories:

1. Create an account on Embed Stories and connect your Facebook account (once you give permission, this will grab any associated Instagram accounts as well).

2. Click “Select Source” next to your Instagram account — the site will then collect your stories from that account and set up auto-save for your future stories at the same time.

There are two meanings to the term “edit Instagram post”. One, editing the post once it’s uploaded, or two, editing your Instagram photo before posting it.

In this article, we’ll tackle how to edit the Instagram post once it’s been uploaded and reasons why you should never, ever, do that.

How To Edit Post

First, we’ll talk about how to edit an Instagram post once you’ve posted. Sometimes you’ll notice a typo in your post, or maybe you forgot to tag a brand you’re working with. Awkward!

Not to worry, it’s super easy to edit an Instagram post after it’s gone live.

Find the post that you need to edit and click the three dots in the top right corner. From the list of options, click “Edit”.

You now have the chance to change or edit the whole of the caption, add or remove tags, change the location, and add alt text.

When you’re done editing the Instagram post, click done.

However, we must warn you that editing your Instagram post isn’t always worth it.

Why You Shouldn’t Edit An Instagram Post

When you post on Instagram, the algorithm ranks your content by how much engagement it gets in a period of time. If you post a photo and it gets 1,000 likes in the first hour, Instagram will boost your photo out to a lot more people.

It will show up first in people’s feeds, make it to the explore page, and maybe even appear first in hashtags and location searches.

But every time you edit Instagram posts, the algorithm actually resets your engagement ranking! You would need to start all over again. All those people that Instagram was planning on showing it to, now they won’t.

Despite how amazing the post it, this can totally destroy your engagement rate on Instagram.

Make sure you have double-checked your caption, tags, location, and hashtags before you click upload to avoid this rookie error!

Many Instagrammers have tried and tested this theory. In fact, when we stopped doing it, our engagement increased dramatically!

A little typo isn’t worth losing all your hard-earned work.

If you have made a seriously huge mistake, delete the whole post and re-upload the following day for the best results.

So while you have all the tips for editing an Instagram post, do it sparingly, or within the first couple of minutes of posting if you really have to. However, once it’s gaining popularity, do not touch that edit button.

Your eyes can get so tired from reading so many lines of web copy, sitting in front of a computer screen all day, while also maintaining leisure activity on your smaller phone screen in your downtime. With all the heavy lifting they have to do these days, sometimes even several pairs of eyes can miss errors.

Maybe you hit “post” before putting the link in your caption, or you notice a word is misspelled just a moment too late. Don’t panic (yet) – in this post I’ll go over how you can edit your social media posts after they’ve been published.

But worth noting, editing posts after they’ve been published isn’t available on all platforms, and there are restrictions as to what, exactly, you can edit.

Here are the post editing capabilities on some of the main social platforms.

Facebook

On Facebook, you’re able to edit post captions, but you can’t change images and videos.

If you attached the wrong photo or video to your post, you’ll have to delete the whole thing and start again, but if you just missed a comma or misspelled a word, or even if you have to tag another brand, you can fix these elements quite easily. And worth noting, post editing is available in Facebook’s Page Manager app also.

One thing to keep in mind when editing posts on Facebook is that edits are visible, and can be made by any Page admin. The same also applies for changes made before the post is published.

Each post’s edit history is also public, so your followers and Page visitors will be able to see them if they go looking.

And one more thing to keep in mind is that Facebook posts which have been boosted, or are part of an ad campaign, cannot be edited.

To edit a post, simply tap/click on the three dots in the top right of the post window and select ‘Edit Post’. once you’ve made the required changes, select ‘Save’ and that’s it.

How to save edited instagram photos without posting them

Extra Tip

If you edit your post in Facebook’s Pages app, you can add more photos to your post. Using this, you can actually change the post image – it’s possible to upload an extra photo to a post, save it, then go back into editing mode and deleted the original image.

Twitter

Unfortunately – as has been widely publicized and discussed – there’s no edit tweets option at the moment.

Twitter had, at times, hinted at the possibility of an editing option, with the most recent discussion revolving around an ‘editing window’ of around five minutes after posting your original tweet. But no progress has been reported on this front as yet.

If you make an error in a tweet, you need to delete it and start over again.

Instagram

On Instagram, just like on Facebook, you can’t switch a photo or video after you’ve published your post. But if you don’t like your caption, you can change it, and you can also add or change any location tag, as well as add or delete account tags on the post. You can also add or edit your alt text tags.

As of right now, you can only edit your Instagram captions within the app on your mobile device.

To edit your Instagram posts:

  1. Navigate to your post
  2. Click the 3 dots on the top right of your post
  3. Hit the “Edit” button
  4. Go ahead and edit your caption, change your location, add account tags to your photo or video
  5. Hit “Done” on the upper right-hand side

How to save edited instagram photos without posting them

Pinterest

On Pinterest, your published Pin photo, video or carousel can’t be swapped out. What you can edit are your Pin’s board, section, title, description and the link your Pin goes to. You can even edit on the go via the Pinterest app.

To edit your Pinterest Pin:

  1. Go to your Pin
  2. Click the pencil icon on the upper left-hand side
  3. Edit the sections you’d like to change
  4. Hit “Save”

How to save edited instagram photos without posting them

LinkedIn

On LinkedIn, you have the capacity to edit both Company Page and personal profile updates – but as with other networks, the image or video you use on your post cannot be edited. You can only change the text elements.

To edit your posts on LinkedIn

  1. Find your post
  2. Click the three dots on the upper right-hand side of your update
  3. Edit your caption, add or remove hashtags and links

If you published a link post, you’ll have to delete the post, as simply changing the link in the caption won’t refresh the original.

How to save edited instagram photos without posting them

Hopefully this helps to clear up any confusion about editing your already published social media posts. For the most part, the visual elements of your posts aren’t interchangeable, but text fields are.

It’s worth getting familiar with each social media network, and its capabilities in this respect, so that you know the required steps to take if any mistakes do occur. Then you’ll be able to clean up your errors quickly and easily, and maintain a more professional looking feed.

A version of this post was first published on Dhariana Lozano’s blog.

When Instagram was launched, it only allowed users to upload square photos. This meant that a substantial portion of your photos had to be cropped.

How to save edited instagram photos without posting them

Instagram’s square photo dimensions became a major drawback to photographers and Instagram users as the image quality, content, and resolution of images were often be sacrificed.

Fortunately, Instagram has seen the need to resolve this major issue. Instagram has given its users more freedom to be creative with their images. Now, pictures can be uploaded in landscape or portrait orientation.

Understanding Instagram Images

So how can you post portrait photos on Instagram without cropping?

The vast majority of Instagram images are squared off. That’s fine for the most part, but it does tend to impact the composition of a photo — especially if it’s a portrait or landscape subject.

When you upload an image or load it into Instagram, the image is automatically cropped to 4:5. No one wants to put a lot of time and effort into capturing the perfect photo only for Instagram to ruin it by cropping the image.

Instagram did add different orientations not long ago, but images still take a little tweaking to get right. Now, you can post images at a maximum size of 600 x 600 for square images, 1080 × 607 for landscapes, and 480 × 600 for portraits. The actual stored size differs slightly, but when you measure images within Instagram, these are what typically come up.

How to save edited instagram photos without posting them

So, if you’re one of the many Instagram users that’s tired of having their photos cropped, let’s take a look at how you can post portrait or vertical photos on Instagram without cropping.

How to Post Portrait Photos on Instagram

Depending on the size of your image, you may now be able to post a portrait image on Instagram without having to crop it.

Here’s how you can check:

Step 1

Open Instagram and create a new post.

Step 2

Select the image you want to upload from your photo gallery.

How to save edited instagram photos without posting them

Step 3

Select the small crop icon in the bottom left of the main image screen.

How to save edited instagram photos without posting them

Step 4

Adjust the image within the grid until it’s to your liking.

How to save edited instagram photos without posting them

Using the crop icon shifts the shape from the usual square to its vertical or portrait orientation. This way, you won’t need to shave off the edges of your photos.

How to Post Landscape Images on Instagram

What if you want to post a landscape picture without cropping?

Well, fortunately, the same process above works in landscape orientation too. Since the two sizes were added to Instagram, it will pick up the shape and size of the image and let you post the most suitable size.

The same instructions apply for portrait and landscape photos, so you can simply refer to the above steps and select a landscape image that you want to upload.

Manually Cropping Instagram Images

Sometimes, the image just doesn’t look right with the new setup on Instagram and you need to do a little bit of manual editing first.

The new orientation feature is good but also has a few glitches, and if it won’t show your image off at its best. It may be better to manually edit the image and upload it as a square — even if it means sacrificing the composition.

There are a lot of photo editing apps that can help you edit your images first before uploading them to Instagram.

Just follow these simple steps to get started:

  1. Download the image to your computer and load it into your image editor.
How to save edited instagram photos without posting them
  2. Crop your image to 5:4 using the image editor, and edit the photo so the subject is front and center.
How to save edited instagram photos without posting them
  3. Upload the image to Instagram.
How to save edited instagram photos without posting them

If that doesn’t quite work or leaves the image subject hanging out to dry, you can add a white border to either side of the image to create the 5:4 ratio.

This can often make the image look better. It has the advantage of leaving your image in its original form, but it will be slightly smaller than usual.

How to save edited instagram photos without posting them

This method works great if you aren’t happy with the way your image looks when you upload it straight to Instagram without editing.

Third-Party Image Editors for Instagram

There are a number of third-party apps that can help prepare images for Instagram and help you resize an image with or without cropping. Even though you can now post portrait and landscape, these apps still make life a little easier when preparing something for publishing.

Two of the photo editing apps we can recommend are No Crop & Square for Instagram for Android and Whitagram for iPhone. Although, there are a lot more photo editing apps for you to explore.

Both of the apps mentioned above achieve the same goal as the manual editing method and will resize your images for Instagram. If you want to keep everything on your phone and not download it to your computer, these and other apps like it are well worth a try.

Final Thoughts

Most photographers find squaring off an image takes something away from the effect. Instagram users have been stuck on using the square dimension for years, but thanks to the app’s recent updates, there is now more flexibility in uploading photos.

Adding portrait and landscape orientation gives the professional photographers and those enthusiastic amateurs more options when composing their shots.

She continues to be a regular contributor to iPhone Life magazine, using her 10+ years of photography experience to create content primarily covering photography tips and photography gear. Rheanne is a passionate photographer both in and outside of work and loves to remind people that they don’t need a fancy camera in order to capture beautiful shots—her most recent photography show featured work mainly shot on an iPhone!

Rheanne holds a bachelor’s degree in Literature & Writing from Maharishi International University. When she isn’t overseeing video content, she loves drinking tea, holding up traffic by taking entirely too many photos of bugs, and hanging out with her Instagram famous cat Wesley (IG: wesley_the_pirate_cat).

The Instagram Explore page is one of the most useful tools available to users. It’s also one of the easiest ways to discover new content and, if you use it right, to increase your own follower count.

There are a couple ways for you to dominate the Explore page. One way is to long press on a photo until it pops up. After popping up, swipe up to like the photo, view the user’s profile, or to send them a direct message. This allows you to view the photo without actually leaving the main Explore page.

The other option, a method which I prefer, is to tap on a photo and go to the Explore page’s never-ending feed of recommended images.

How to save edited instagram photos without posting them How to save edited instagram photos without posting them

As you scroll through IG’s never-ending loop, like each photo as it goes by. Like as many photos as you can until it makes you absolutely nauseous. The same goes for if you prefer to long press and swipe up on the Explore page — at least make sure you like each photo even if it’s the worst possible photo in the world.

The more photos you like, the more people who will see your IG handle pop up on feeds and elsewhere. The more people who see your account leads to more people who know about you, and the more people who will check you out.

I always tell friends who look through my Instagram feed that if they are going to look, they might as well do some work and like each photo as it goes by. It saves me time and also pushes my account further out into the large black hole that is the IG algorithm.

It’s hard to get on the Explore page, but using it to further along your own platform is exactly what it is supposed to be used for.

So try it out and see for yourself. I guarantee you will get at least one new like or follow for every 30 images or so that you double-tap on the Instagram Explore page.

Instagram crops all vertical posts to a 4:5, which means part of a vertical video or photo is cut off. But, if you add a white background before publishing to Instagram, you can post the full 9:16 portrait without cropping.

How to save edited instagram photos without posting them

Instagram crops all vertical posts to a 4:5. Unless your video is under 30 seconds, it won’t work on Reels. That means that it’s impossible to fit a full 9:16 video into a normal Instagram video post. If you take a screenshot, film a video clip on your phone, TikTok, or Snap, or if you want to post a Story to your feed, Instagram makes you crop part of it out unless you resize it first.

How to save edited instagram photos without posting themA portrait video is cropped to 4×5 aspect ratio

To post a full vertical video or image on Instagram without cropping to 4:5, add a white background to make it into a square. Then, you can post the photo or video without cropping out or changing the size. This technique works for pictures, GIFs, and videos. Here’s a step-by-step tutorial:

  1. Upload to a Resizer Tool
  2. Add a Background
  3. Download and Share

Step 1: Upload to a Resizer Tool

Open Kapwing’s resizer and upload the vertical or portrait photo you want to post. Kapwing’s resizer is free to use and online, so you don’t need to download an app. It supports images, GIFs and videos.

How to save edited instagram photos without posting themKapwing’s Resizer is quick and intuitive, even for beginners.

Note: If you want to edit or add filters to your photos, make sure to do this before resizing. That way, the white background won’t be affected by the color changes and adjustments.

Step 2: Resize and Add a Background

Choose the 1:1 option for Instagram (Kapwing also supports 16:9 sizing for YouTube and other formats). You can change the background color and use Kapwing’s zoom and positioning tools to zoom in, crop, or add a border. Click “Export Image” once the preview matches what you want your post to look like!

How to save edited instagram photos without posting themChoose a new size on the right panel

To take up more vertical space in the Instagram feed, you can also choose to resize your post to 4:5 (the “FB/Twitter Portrait” option on Kapwing).

Step 3: Download and Share

After a few moments, your image or video will be ready for download – you can remove the Kapwing watermark for free by signing into your account. Since your photo/video now has a 1:1 aspect ratio, you can now download and publish it without cropping on Instagram.

If you’re not signed into a Kapwing account, sign in or sign up using your Google or Facebook account – once you’ve signed into a Kapwing account, the watermark in the lower right corner will be removed from your final image.

Facebook, parent company of Instagram, has allowed you to download photos and other account data for some time now, but the data request feature is also now available on Instagram to meet the GDPR data portability requirement in the EU — and it’s available worldwide, not just in Europe.

This new feature in Instagram lets you not only view all of your data but download an entire backup of your Instagram account including comments, photos, liked pictures, and more. It’s currently rolling out on Android and iOS, and if you don’t see it yet, you can still do it right from your phone’s web browser.

Creating the backup takes up to 48 hours, and you may need to download it via a computer. Still, you can initiate everything entirely from your mobile device. Photos will be downloaded as JPGs, videos as MP4s, and the rest of the data will be in machine-readable JSON format which is best viewed in browsers such as Firefox.

Step 1: Request Your Instagram Data

The two ways you can view and/or download your data are either through the Instagram app directly or through your phone’s web browser. While these methods are similar, there are a couple differences between the two.

Method 1: From the Instagram App

Go to your profile tab, and tap the cog icon (iOS) or the three-dot menu (Android) to view the Options page. If you just want to view your data online to see things like former usernames, hashtags you follow, blocked accounts, search history, etc., tap “Account Data” and “View All” next to the item you want to inspect.

To actually download your backup, select “Data Download” instead from the Options list, then tap the “Request Download” button that appears. On the next screen, enter the email address where you’d like to receive the backup (your account email should be automatically pre-filled) and hit “Next,” then enter your account password and hit “Request Download” to complete the process.

Method 2: From Your Web Browser

Visit instagram.com in your mobile web browser, sign into your account, then tap the profile tab icon just like on the regular app. Next, tap the cog icon in the top left to view the Options page, then select “Privacy and Security.”

If you just want to view your data, hit “View Account Data” under the Account Data heading (you can also just visit instagram.com/accounts/access_tool to jump right there), then “View All” next to the item you want to inspect.

To download your data instead, select “Request Download” under the Data Download heading (you can also just visit instagram.com/download/request/ to jump right there), then enter the email address you want to send it to (your account email should be automatically pre-filled) and tap “Next.” Enter your account password on the next page, then “Request Download” to finish up.

Step 2: Download Your Backup

Instagram will email you a backup within 48 hours with the subject line “Your Instagram Data,” and a link to your backup will be provided inside that says “Download Data.” Tapping that on your phone will redirect you to the Instagram app, which will redirect you back to your default web browser where you’ll need to log into Instagram again. Once signed in, tap “Download Data” to do just that.

If you get an error on your phone saying “this page isn’t available,” you’ll have to download the .zip file on your computer instead, which is probably a good place to store the backup anyway.

The link you’re provided by Instagram will only work for four days total from the time you receive it, so if you forgot to download it, you’ll have to go through the process of requesting it all over again.

How to save edited instagram photos without posting them

Your friend shared something hilarious on Instagram, and you want to download it. If it’s a photo, you can screengrab it easily enough, but if it’s a video, things get trickier. The app doesn’t actually give you an option to save Instagram videos posted by those you follow. You can only copy the link to the post, or bookmark it in the app as part of a private collection.

As it turns out, there are some third-party apps that let you download and save Instagram videos to your camera roll, though. And if you want to save your own video or Instagram Story, you can do that too.

Here’s what you need to know to master the art of downloading any Instagram video of your choosing.

How to save own Instagram Videos

Recording a video straight from the Instagram app? There are several ways you can save those videos, whether you end up sharing them as a post or an Instagram Story.

1) Posts

To ensure all the videos you post to Instagram get saved to your phone, head into your Instagram settings (the three dot icon in the upper right of your profile). Scroll down to the Settings section. Towards the bottom, there are toggles for several different things: save original photos, save posted photos, and save videos after posting. As long as that third option is switched on, videos that you share as posts will automatically be saved to your camera roll, too.

2) Instagram Stories

To save your own Instagram Story that you recorded directly in the Instagram app, just tap the “Save” icon in the bottom left right after you’ve recorded and edited your video. This saves the Story to your camera roll.

Alternatively, once posted to your Stories, you can open the Story, tap the three dot icon at the bottom of the video, and then tap Save/Photo Video. If your Story contains multiple photos and videos, you can choose Save Story to save the whole thing as a video.

Downloading videos posted by others you follow is slightly more challenging.

1) Video Downloader for Instagram Repost

With Video Downloader (free on Android), you can download both photos and videos to save on your device or repost. Using it is simple: Just copy the share URL for the video (you can get this by tapping the three-dot menu icon in the upper right of a post), and then pasting that URL in the app. Then, you can tap the download icon to either repost it or download it to your phone. The app also keeps a history of all your copy-and-pasted URLs, which is handy for keeping track of the source of a video.

2) PostGraber

PostGraber is a website you can use to download photos or videos in an Instagram post. (It also works when people share multiple videos in a single post.) To use it, just head to the website, paste the share URL, and tap the Go button. From there, you’ll be able to download the video(s) to your computer.

3) Repostly

While Repostly (free on iOS) doesn’t let you download videos to your camera roll (although according to reviews, it used to do that), it does let you repost them. To do so, grab the share URL for the video, paste it into the app, and then tap the Repost to Instagram button.

4) Instant Save

Instant Save is another website you can use to download Instagram videos. Just copy the URL, paste it into the entry field on the site, and then tap the download button. It’s not particularly fancy or elegant, but it gets the job done.

5) Collections

What is your actual end game with this photo? Do you plan to share it with friends or on another social network—or do you just want to remember it for the future? If it’s the latter case, you may be better served by simply bookmarking the video to a Collection within Instagram itself. To do this, tap the bookmark-looking icon in the lower right of an Instagram post (just below the photo itself, but above the comments). This bookmarks the post. Then, head to your profile and tap that same icon on the far right. Here you’ll see all the photos and videos you’ve bookmarked. You can also organize them into themed Collections for easier perusal later on. In this case, you could make one collection specifically for videos, so your favorite Instagram videos are always there a few taps away.

Since Instagram launched its face filters last year, many people have been going crazy over the fun features, but which one is the favourite?

  • 15:34, 1 Feb 2018

A GREAT way to spice up a photo or video on Instagram is to add a filter to enhance it.

But how do you use filters and what are the most popular ones currently on the app? We’ve got the lowdown…

How to save edited instagram photos without posting them

How do you get the face filters on Instagram?

Instagram now has face filters that are similar to Snapchat, and there are plenty to choose from.

  1. To take an image or video with a face filter, tap the camera icon in the top left of the screen.
  2. You can also swipe right to do this in the feed.
  3. Then tap the “face icon” that pops up in the bottom right.
  4. Next, select the filter you want from along the bottom.
  5. Tap to take an image or video. The filters work for both the front or back-facing camera and will select the closest person’s face.
  6. When you’ve captured your image or video, you then have the option of adding text, a gif, a hashtag and a location to decorate it even further.
  7. Then you can save your creation to your device, add it to your story or send it to certain Instagram users on their inbox.

Face filters work for Live (except for Android devices), Boomerang, Hands-Free and Rewind camera formats, and some filters work with two faces at once.

What are the most popular face filters on Instagram?

Since the face filters were added to Instagram on May 16, 2017, many people have been comparing them to the Snapchat equivalents.

When Snapchat first launched, people were crazy over the dog filter, and it appears the pooch trend has continued to Instagram.

The most used ‘grammed face filter is the puppy filter, according to Instagram user data.

Other popular options include the bunny and koala filters.

Once you have captured or uploaded image or video on Snapchat, you can add filters to alter the colour.

  • If you tap the filter again you can alter the strength using the slider.

Alternatively you can tweak the filter using the edit button, which allows you to adjust the brightness and contrast among other things.

This is followed by Gingham, Juno and Lark.

Maybe in the year 2030, babies will be born knowing how to post pictures on Instagram. But, for now, there’s no reason to feel ashamed about not understanding the ins and out of the world’s #1 photo-sharing app.

Instagram sparks joy for us, and we want to invite you to join the fun. If you’ve heard the buzz but aren’t sure what your first step should be, then this quick and easy guide for how to post pictures on Instagram is for you!

Before You Post: Before you can start raking in those likes and comments, you’ll need to download the Instagram app and set up an Instagram account.

How To Post Pictures On Instagram: Step #1

Once you’ve downloaded the Instagram app and set up an account, you’re ready to get started. Fire up the app, and let’s do this thing.

In the app, you’ll see a stationary bar located at the bottom of your screen. This navigation bar will take you anywhere you need to go within Instagram.

To post pictures on Instagram, you need to tap the center icon. It’s a plus sign inside a square box.

How To Post Pictures On Instagram: Step #2

After tapping the “add a post” icon, it’s time to select the media you want to share.

Because they love us, Instagram gives us options. You can choose something from your library, or—if you’re feeling spontaneous—take a photo or video on the spot from within the app.

Just tap “Photo” or “Video” at the bottom of the screen to perform the latter. Personally, we like to post pictures or videos we’ve previously taken.

To make finding your media even faster, tap “All Photos” at the top of the screen (located between “Cancel” and “Next). Instagram will present a dropdown menu showing all the locations of photos and videos in your phone.

Isn’t organization wonderful?

How To Post Pictures On Instagram: Step #3

Before you move on to editing your media selection, it’s important to take note of all the options available to you.

In the bottom righthand corner of whatever photo or video is presently selected, you’ll see three black circles with white icons in the center of each.

The first, an infinity symbol, represents Boomerang. Boomerang is a partner app of Instagram that allows users to make short, repeating videos.

Next, the second icon is an outline of a collage, and it represents Layout. Like Boomerang, Layout is a partner app of Instagram that allows users to fit multiple photos into one post.

The third and final icon is multiple squares overlaying one another. Unlike Boomerang and Layout, you don’t need to download anything to use this feature. Tap the third icon to create a carousel post.

Traditionally, when you post pictures on Instagram, it’s a single post. However, the carousel icon allows you to choose multiple photos or videos to share within one post. It’s different than Layout, which displays your photos in a collage.

A carousel post means users can view multiple photos by simply swiping.

How To Post Pictures On Instagram: Step #4

Now that you’ve selected the media you want to post, you can tap the blue “Next” in the upper righthand corner of the app.

Instead of just posting whatever looking however, Instagram gives you the opportunity to edit your photo.

The app provides a variety of filters to choose from as well as a way to increase or decrease the strength of the filters (tap the “half-shaded sun” icon at the top of the screen).

You can also select “Edit” at the bottom of the screen to make a variety of adjustments including brightness, contrast and saturation.

How to save edited instagram photos without posting them

Over the past few years, Instagram has seen exponential growth — from one million users at its inception to over one billion in 2022.

If you’re interested in getting an Instagram account, or just created one but aren’t sure how to use it, you’re in luck. Here, we’re going to cover all the basics, so you can learn why Instagram is the top social media platform for engagement today.

What is Instagram?

Instagram is a social media platform that emphasizes photo and video sharing via its mobile app. You can take, edit, and publish visual content for both followers and non-followers, as long as your account is public. Users can interact with your content via likes, comments, shares, and saves.

It’s hard to remember a time before Instagram. At one time, “Do it for the ‘gram” was a common saying, which meant, essentially, “Do something so we can take a picture and post it to Instagram.”

Since then, Instagram has placed a larger and heavier emphasis on video. So you no longer hear the phrase “Do it for the ‘gram.” I bet, though, that a second version of the phrase will soon follow. (Maybe “Do it for reel?”)

If you’re not part of the one billion users on Instagram, you might want to reconsider. The app is a great chance to engage with top brands and stay a part of friends’ lives. When I want to see how my college friends are doing, I don’t check Facebook, I check Instagram. Plus, you can follow your favorite celebrities or political figures to see candid photos of their everyday lives.

Additionally, it’s a phenomenal platform for investigating what other brands are doing — for instance, Nike uses the Instagram Stories’ feature to promote inspirational athlete stories you won’t find anywhere else.

How to Sign Up for Instagram

To sign up for Instagram, all you need to do is download the Instagram app on your phone and click the ‘Sign up’ button. You can choose to sign up through Facebook or use your email or phone number. After you choose a username and password, you’re ready to build your profile.

If you’re ready to sign up for Instagram, follow these steps below:

  • Go to the Instagram site on your desktop, or download the Instagram app from the App Store (iPhone) or Google Play Store (Android).
  • If you’re on desktop, click “Log in with Facebook”, or fill in the form with your mobile number or email, name, username, and password. Then click “Sign up”.
  • On Android, click “Sign Up With Email or Phone Number”.
  • On iPhone, select “Sign Up”.
  • Enter your email address or phone number, then click “Next”. Alternatively, you can sign up with your Facebook account.
  • Once you’ve filled out your username and password, you will be instructed to fill out your profile info. Then, tap “Done”.
  • If you register with Facebook, you’ll need to log into your Facebook account if you’re currently logged out.

How Do Instagram Notifications Work?

When your account is created, you’ll want to adjust your notifications so you only receive the information you want. For instance, you can choose to receive notifications when you get likes from everyone — but, alternatively, you might decide to only receive notifications when you get a like from someone you follow. Or, you might turn off notifications for likes altogether.

You can adjust notifications to “Off”, “From People I Follow”, or “From Everyone”, for the following categories — Comments, Comment Likes, Likes and Comments on Photos of You, Follower Requests, Accepted Follow Requests, Friends on Instagram, Instagram Direct, Photos of You, Reminders, First Posts and Stories, Product Announcements, View Counts, Support Requests, Live Videos, Mentions in Bio, IGTV Video Updates, and Video Chats.

If you’re overwhelmed by that list, I get it — I am, too. If you’re unsure what notifications you want to receive, you might start with your notifications on “From Everyone”, and if certain notifications begin to annoy you, you can turn them off later.

NOTE: Since I’m an Apple user, the below solutions have been tested for downloading Instagram stories on iPhone/Mac and seem to work as of April 2021. I imagine the process would be pretty similar for Android and Windows users, but if you’re still confused, let us know in the comments and I’m sure we can dig up the solutions for you.

How to Download Instagram Stories From Your Own Account

First, let’s quickly review the options for saving and downloading your own Instagram Stories (i.e. Instagram Stories from your own account).

OPTION A: Download Instagram Stories clips one by one

If you want to save your Instagram story’s individual clip (say, one selfie or boomerang as opposed to all of the ones from your story that day) here’s what you do:

  1. Open up your own Story by pressing the “Your Story” icon on the upper left hand corner of your feed
  2. With your Story open, tap the three little dots on the lower right hand corner that say “More”
  3. Hit “Save…” then press “Save Video”

Done! That one single clip should now be saved in your camera roll/photos.

OPTION B: Download an entire days’ worth of Instagram Stories

If you want to save your Instagram story in its entirety, this step by step will show you how to download an entire Instagram story video (from one 24h period) that you can save, watch back, etc.

NOTE: These videos are a little awkward because you can’t just “tap through” the photo stories as you normally would, so they linger on the screen for a seemingly unnecessary amount of time, but hey, you can’t win em all 😉

Here’s how you can save a one day Instagram story:

  1. Open up your own Story by pressing the “Your Story” icon on the upper left hand corner of your feed
  2. With your Story open, tap the three little dots on the lower right hand corner that say “More”
  3. Hit “Save…” then press “Save Story”
  4. Wait for the video to render

Yay – it should now appear in your Camera Roll!

NOTE: These methods only work for active stories. If you want a way to download Stories that have expired, then add them to your Highlights FIRST and then use the methods listed in the next section to download them.

How to Download Instagram Stories From Someone Else’s Account

If you want to save someone’s Instagram story (i.e. NOT your own), first of all – we’re sure you have totally valid, non-stalkerish reasons for doing that. Just know you’re in a non-judgement zone 😉

Let’s just imagine it’s something totally innocent like… you did a takeover and want to save the clips, and not something totally weird like… you want to make a montage of their face to watch while eating your 5th bucket of ice cream.

Anyways, if your goal is to save someone else’s Instagram story, here’s how you download Instagram Stories from someone else’s account.

NOTE: All these websites do pretty much the exact same thing, I just wanted to give you multiple options in case one of them shuts down, which is common with third party websites like this.

They all serve the same purpose, with minimal differences, so just pick whichever.

OPTION A: Use Story Saver

  1. Go to https://www.storysaver.net/
  2. Enter the username of the person you want to download Instagram stories or Highlights from from
  3. Scroll down to see Current Stories that you can download one by one, or scroll to the bottom to show the #Highlight Stories which will open up that user’s highlights
  4. Right click on the “Save as Video” video button, choose “Save link as” and save it wherever you want on your computer

OPTION B: Use InstaDP

  1. Go to https://www.instadp.com/download-instagram-stories
  2. Enter the username of the profile that you want to download Instagram Stories or Instagram highlights from
  3. Scroll down to the specific Instagram Story clip that you want to download
  4. Right click on the “Download” button and press “Save link as” and save it wherever you want on your computer

Insta Story Download: Helpful Resources

Here are the sites and resources recommended above to help you with your Insta Story download. Bookmark them for future use, or yenno, keep coming back to this page if you want. We’d appreciate the views 😉

StorySaver.net – Allows you to save/view stories and highlights online. Super clean website/interface

InstaDP– Same as StorySaver.net. The downside is the website is a little sketchier looking, but it does still work
