There was a time when many people owned scanners, but that time has passed. Nowadays, all you really need is a phone with a camera. We’ll show you how to do it with any Android device.
To start scanning everything from receipts to recipes, you only need an Android phone with a decent camera and the Google Drive app. That’s all there is to it. Let’s get scanning.
First, open Google Drive on your Android device and make sure you’re signed in with your Google account. Tap the floating “+” button in the bottom right corner.
You’ll see a menu with some options. Select “Scan.”
The camera will immediately open—you may need to grant the app permission to use your camera first. Position the document so that it’s entirely in the frame, then snap the photo.
The next screen will ask you to confirm that you want to use the photo. Tap “OK” to proceed.
Google Drive will attempt to automatically crop and adjust the lighting. If it needs some help, you can manually adjust it with the crop and color buttons. To add another page to the document, tap the Add Page button.
Once all the pages are looking good, tap “Save” to finish.
Now you can give the file a name and choose which folder to save it to. The document will be saved as a PDF in the desired folder.
There are a slew of other apps in the Play Store that can do this, but Google Drive is the easiest, and many people already use it. Scanners are just another thing that smartphones have replaced. If only they could replace printers, too.

Apart from taking photos, the camera on your Android Phone can be used to Scan documents in PDF Format. This can be quite handy in situations where you do not have access to a document scanner or you simply do not want to use a scanner, since your Android Phone can also scan documents.
Scan Documents With Android Phone
Used in conjunction with the Google Drive App, your Android Phone is quite capable of doubling up as an impressive document scanner.
Scanning a document with an Android Phone is as simple as taking a snap with the back camera of your phone. Once the document has been scanned, you can crop, rotate, edit and enhance the document, before saving it to Google Drive.
The scanned document will be saved as a PDF file on Google Drive, from where you can Print, Share or Send the Scan to anyone using Gmail, WhatsApp, Skype and other sharing apps as available on your phone.
Steps to Scan Documents With Android Phone
As mentioned above, you will need the Google Drive App in order to turn your Android Phone into a Document Scanner. You should already have this app on your Android Phone, if not make sure that you download and install the Google Drive app from this link.
1. Open the Google Drive App on your Android Phone.
2. Next, tap on the large Plus button located at the bottom right corner of your screen (See image below).
3. On the next screen, tap on the Folder option to create a new folder on Google Drive for storing your scanned Documents.
4. Next, you will see a popup asking you to provide a Name for the folder, name the folder as “Scanned Documents” or any other name that best suits your purpose.
5. Next, tap on the Scanned Documents folder that you had just created.
6. Once you are in the Scanned Documents Folder, tap on the large blue Plus button (See image below).
7. On the next screen, tap on the Scan option (this will activate or open the camera of your Android Phone).
8. Place the document to be scanned on a flat surface (table) and simply take a picture of the document by tapping on the large blue circle located at the bottom of your screen (See image below).
9. Once you take a picture of the document, you will get to see a preview. In case the preview looks OK, you can save the scan as a PDF document by tapping on the Check mark icon (See image below)

If you are not satisfied with the scan, you can re-scan the document by tapping on the Redo icon in the bottom menu or you can make use of the Editing and Document Enhancing options from the top menu, as explained below.
1. Crop: Tapping on the crop option ( #1 in image above) allows you to crop the picture that you just shot with your camera.
2. Color Palate: Tapping on the Color Palate icon ( #2 in image above) allows you to change the default “Black and White” scan to Color. (See image below).
3. 3-dot Menu icon: Tapping on the 3-dots menu icon ( #3 ) allows you to Delete, Rename, Rotate the scanned document and also provides access to other Settings. (See image below)
The Settings menu allows you to choose the Paper Size, Image Quality, Orientation of the document and Automatic image enhancement.
Print, Share or Send Scanned Documents
Once you scan the document, it will be stored on Google Drive in Scanned Documents Folder or any other folder that you made the scan to.
The best part of storing Scanned documents on Google Drive is that you will be able to search the document by its name, Print, Share or Send the document to any one at any time.
1. Simply open the Google Drive App on your Android Phone.
2. Once you are in Google Drive, Open the scanned document that you want to print or send to someone.
3. Once the document is open, tap on the 3-dot menu icon, located at the top right corner of your screen.
4. On the menu that appears, tap on Print in case you want to print the PDF file or tap on Send File , in case you want to send the scan to anyone. (See image below)
5. Once you tap on send, you will see a slide-up menu, providing you with Gmail, WhatsApp, Outlook and various other options to send the file (See image below).
Tip: Instead of taking pictures of Receipts, Flyers, Notes and others, you can save a ton of Storage space on your Android device by scanning such items and saving them as PDF files on Google Drive.

It’s kind of astonishing when you stop and think about all the once-cumbersome tasks our smartphones have simplified.
From check depositing to audio recording and even airplane boarding, our tiny pocket computers have truly become all-in-one life organizers and productivity machines. Our phones can do so much, in fact, that I’d wager hardly anyone actually takes advantage of all their mobile-productivity powers.
Case in point: One easily overlooked way your phone can save you time and frustration is by serving as a quick ‘n’ simple on-the-go document scanner. Google actually offers two useful tools for scanning and managing physical papers—and both can come in quite handy when you find yourself needing to save or share any sort of document, card or receipt.
Option #1: The basic document scan
Our first Android scanning method is part of an app that’s probably on your phone already: Google Drive. Drive has an out-of-sight option for scanning documents via your smartphone’s camera and then saving them as PDF files within your cloud storage. You can find it by opening the Drive app and tapping the blue “+” icon in the bottom-right corner and then selecting “Scan.”
You can also add a direct Scan shortcut onto your home screen by pressing and holding any empty space, selecting Widgets, and then looking for the “Drive Scan” option. If you’re using a phone with at least Android 7.1—and/or using a custom launcher like Action Launcher or Nova Launcher—you can also access that same direct shortcut within the main Drive icon by pressing and holding it (thanks to Android’s convenient but somewhat confusing App Shortcut system).
However way you access it, once you open Drive’s Scan command, you’ll see what looks like a regular camera interface. Place your paper on a flat surface, line it up in the viewfinder, and tap the shutter button to capture the document.
There’s one more possible step: For some reason, Drive sometimes tries and fails to crop a document on its own—which can result in a cut-off scan. That presumably isn’t what you want.
Thankfully, the fix is easy: Tap the crop button (the overlapping “L” shapes) in the top-right area of the screen, then drag the dots on the box until they properly outline your document.
When you’re done, hit the checkmark icon—and, ta-da: Your scan is complete. Hit the checkmark icon again on the next screen to save the document into your Drive storage, then tap the confirmation notification if you want to share the PDF via email, messaging, or any other process.
Option #2: The text-grabbing genie
The second simple Android scan method revolves around Google Keep, Google’s cross-platform note-taking utility—and it’s noteworthy because it contains the option to extract text from any scanned document and save it as regular text on your phone.
All you gotta do is open up Keep and tap the camera icon in the lower-right corner (or, if you prefer, use the same App Shortcut method described above to create a new photo note directly from your home screen). Take a photo of your document—then, once you’ve saved the note, open it and tap the image you captured.

In the three-dot menu icon at the top-right corner of the screen, you’ll see an option labeled “Grab image text.” Tap it, and—hey, how ’bout that?—every word from your physical document will appear as text within your note. You can edit it, copy and paste it, or do whatever your sweet little heart desires.
The bulky in-office scanner will likely play a role in our lives for years to come, but that kind of contraption isn’t always convenient or available. When you need to quickly capture a page on the go, these two methods can help you get the job done easily—and get everything you need in the palm of your hand mere seconds after you begin.

How to scan documents on Samsung Galaxy (Android 10 and 11)
Before you scan documents with your Galaxy phone, make sure the Document scanning feature is enabled within the Camera app. Well, if you have updated your Samsung Galaxy smartphones to Android 10 or Android 11, the feature should be enabled by default.
To try it out, just launch the Camera app and point your phone at a document. As you do this, the scanner will highlight the edges of the document with a yellow rectangle, along with a “Scanbutton in the center. Faucet “tap to scan” when you’re ready, and the document will be stored in your Galaxy Gallery for you to save or share.

- Open the Camera app and touch the Settings o Gear icon in the upper left corner.
- Make sure scene optimizer is trapped.
- Now touch scene optimizer text itself and make sure that the Document scanning is also on.

How to scan documents with Samsung
When the document scanning feature is enabled, you can easily scan any document with your Samsung Galaxy phone.
Step 1:. throw the Camera application
Step 2:. Point the camera at a document to scan and when the edges of the document are highlighted with a yellow rectangle faucet “tap to scan.” Once taken, you can adjust corners according to your tastes and touch Save.
Step 3. The scanned document will be stored in your Galaxy Gallery for you to save or share.

This is how you can scan documents on Samsung Galaxy phones using the built-in document scanning feature. However, it is no more accurate than other document scanning apps.

Today scanning a document doesn’t have to involve that large printer-size machine. All you need is your Android device and a good scanner app. Thanks to some really effective apps that you can find for free on Google Play, scanning a document has never been easier.
With the following Android apps, you’ll be able to scan your document by simply taking a picture. Not only that, but you can turn your scanned document into a PDF and easily share it with colleagues and friends.
1. Google Drive
Google Drive comes pre-installed on most Android devices these days, making the app our first choice on the list of best scanning apps for Android, as you won’t have to install any additional apps to do the work.
Getting started is quite straightforward. Simply tap the “+” button in the right lower part of the display, then select Scan. Next, you’ll simply need to take a photo of the page(s) you wish to scan. The app will automatically save the results as PDFs and save them in Drive for you, from where you can share them with others or save them on your computer.
2. Adobe Scan
Price: Free / $11.99
Adobe Scan is another great document scanner app for Android. You can scan documents and receipts, as well as whiteboards. The app lets you apply color presets to make the text more eligible and gives you the option to add more pages to a single PDF, as needed.
Once you’re happy with the results, you can send the document via email or a link or save it for further use via Google Drive or OneDrive. You can also back it up in the cloud or save the pages as .JPG.
More features are hidden behind a paywall, for example, like the ability to export the PDF to Word, Excel or PowerPoint.
3. FineReader PDF
Price: Free / $4.99
If you want to go a bit deeper with your document scanning, then this offering is one of the best out there. It’s capable of detecting documents that you’ve taken photos of on your device, which you can then edit and send from the app itself.
With FineReader, you can save your scans to either PDF of JPG, then add a few professional document finishes with filters that include greyscale, black-and-white and color. You can also use tags and other searchable options to keep things neatly organized.
Multi-page documents aren’t a problem either, as the app allows you to include up to 100 pages per file you scan. Additionally, it does a fairly good job at straightening out documents that you snap from awkward angles.
The app offers a Premium version which brings accurate text recognition in 193 languages, allowing users to output it to 12 of the most popular text formats like docx, txt, xls, and more.
4. Microsoft Lens
Microsoft Lens is one of the most popular scanner apps you can find on the Google Play Store. The app enhances, trims and creates pictures of documents and whiteboards that are readable and then turns them into PDF, PowerPoint, or Word files.
Tap on the “Scanner” icon on the top-right and select what type of document you want to scan, whether it’s a book or a document, a whiteboard, or a business card. Don’t worry about scanning the document incorrectly, as the app will guide you and allow you to edit the after capture.
Interestingly enough, Microsoft Lens also includes a Read aloud option, which basically reads out the texts you’ve just captured.
Price: Free / $4.99 and up
CamScanner brings you all the tools you need for quickly scanning your documents efficiently. By using the phone’s camera, you can scan invoices, receipts, notes, business cards, certifications and other documents. There’s even a book mode allowing you to scan books more easily.
Quickly find a specific scan with the search feature simply by entering a keyword to save some valuable time. Once you’ve located the document, you can share the PDF/JPG though social media or an email attachment.
The app also includes an interesting Signature tool which scans your signature from a document, then easily adds it to your current scan. You can then customize its size and color. The feature is available through the Premium or Gold subscriptions which unlock additional options including sharing with watermark, collage images and converting the scans to Word documents.
6. Tiny Scanner
Price: Free / $4.99
Tiny Scanner converts your Android device into a portable scanner. Scan any document you come across and either save them as a picture or PDF file. The app also offers the possibility of saving your file through the most popular cloud services, such as Dropbox, Evernote, Drive or OneDrive.
Your documents can either be scanned in grayscale, color, or black & white. There’s also a Batch mode for when you have to scan multiple files and the option to add a Signature. (It’s a free feature here.) Additionally, you can keep curious eyes away from your files by adding a passcode to protect them.
Tiny Scanner is quite a simple app compared to the others on the list, but it does the job and that’s all that matters. A Premium plan can be unlocked, which brings document cloud print and AI-powered OCR.
7. Fast Scanner
Price: Free / $4.99
With millions of downloads in the Play Store, Fast Scanner is an app that covers your document scanning needs. Scan all sorts of documents, including business cards and other paper text. You can add more than one page to a scan, save them as PDF/JPG, and then export it with services like Gmail, Google Drive, OneDrive and more.
The app also allows you to edit your scans in order to make them easier to read by applying various filters such as gray, color, black & white and more. With Fast Scanner, you can also sign your scanned files without having to buy the app. You can place the signature anywhere on your document and even enlarge it.

Use iPhone/ iPad/ iPod touch to scan a form/document
You can use the Notes app to scan documents and add signatures on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.

1. Open Notes and select a note or create a new one
2. Tap the Camera button, then tap Scan Documents
3. Place your document in view of the camera
4. If your device is in Auto mode, your document will automatically scan. If you need to manually capture a scan, tap the Shutter button or one of the Volume buttons. Then drag the corners to adjust the scan to fit the page, then tap Keep Scan
5. Tap Save or add additional scans to the document
Sign a document with iPhone/iPad/iPod touch
1. Open Notes, then tap the document in the note
2. Tap the Share button, then tap Markup

What can’t you do with a cell phone these days? The latest models allow you to take pictures, record movies, watch TV, play music, browse the Internet, send e-mails and even make the occasional phone call.
But what if you want to use your cell phone’s multimedia technology for more than just entertainment? What if you actually need to get some work done? No problem. With a simple camera phone and some new software, you can turn any mobile phone into a scanner, fax machine and copier.
Camera phones are everywhere. According to 2007 statistics, 79 percent of cell phones sold in the United States had a built-in digital camera [source: RCR Wireless News]. An estimated 1 billion camera phones are in use around the world [source: ComputerWorld]. The picture quality of these phones is improving quickly. Some cell phone manufacturers have already released five-megapixel camera phones and there are rumors about a 10-megapixel model hitting the shelves any day now [source: AsiaMedia].
Scanning and faxing from a cell phone works through the same technology as Internet faxing. A document, in this case a digital photograph, is e-mailed to an Internet fax service that converts the digital photo into fax data. The fax service then sends the fax to the recipient over a phone line. For more information, read How Internet Fax Works.
The cool thing about these new cell phone “scan and fax” services is that they can optimize and compress camera phone images into clear, readable PDF documents. Using special imaging algorithms, the cell phone scanning software can take a photo of an open book — with shadows in the crease and curved pages — and turn it into a flat image with uniform background color and sharp text. The software also simplifies the image, getting rid of unnecessary digital noise to make the file smaller and easier to send over a cellular data network.
What exactly do you need to scan and fax documents with your cell phone? Does it work on all camera phones? Is it expensive? Read on to find out how to get started scanning and faxing from your cell phone.
Document scanning is possible via the Google Drive app, but my brain doesn’t think of opening a cloud storage app to scan a document. I usually just open the camera app and take a picture instead — and apparently, I’m not the only one.
Google has added a feature to the Pixel’s camera app (all Pixel models with Google Camera version 7.2) that lets you scan documents without taking a photo. Once it detects documents (a sheet of paper, business card, etc.), it will offer to scan the document. Once scanned, you can then share it with either a cloud service or with others via email or a messaging app.
Open the default Camera app and line the viewfinder up with a document you wish to scan. You’ll want to be in a reasonably well-lit area so the camera can identify the document. You’ll also want to get a close as possible to the item while keeping its borders within the viewfinder.
A button will appear asking if you wish to “Scan document.” Tap this button, and after a second (or two), you will be directed to a new page where Google Lens will display a grid where it believes the edges of the document are. You can adjust the corners by dragging the circles and lines to match the borders of the document.
After you are done adjusting, select “Done” in the bottom-left corner of the screen. Two new buttons will appear: “Share PDF” and “Share Image.” The former will convert the scanned document into a PDF that you can share with other apps, including cloud services (where you can save it) or messaging app (where you send it to someone). The latter offers the same share options, but converts the scanned document into an image file.

In the era of smartphones and cloud-based computing, it almost seems irresponsible to keep a stash of paper documents. Not only is a physical paper printout environmentally impractical, it’s also a lot harder to organize and keep track of than a digital file stored on a hard drive.
Several existing apps can help you turn your physical, real-world documents into easier-to-manage digital files. But tech giant Microsoft has just thrown its hat into this ring with a popular Windows Phone app that’s now available for Android and iOS.
Step 1: Install Office Lens
For iPhone users, installing Microsoft’s new Office Lens app is as easy as searching the app on the iTunes App Store, hitting “Get,” then “Install.”
For Android users, the app is still in its testing phases, so you’ll need to join the Office Lens beta program to install it. To begin, head to the official Google+ community at this link. From here, tap the “Join” button to begin. After that, tap the “Become a tester” link in the body of the first post on this community.
From here, tap the “Become a Tester” button on the following screen. At this point, you should see a message stating “You are now a tester.” Underneath this message, tap the “download it from the Play Store” link to head to the Office Lens install page.
At this point, you can install the app like any other.
Step 2: Scanning Documents
When you first launch Office Lens, you’ll have to review and accept the app’s license agreement. Tap “Agree” on this screen to do just that, then press “Start using Office Lens.” On an iPhone, you just have to “Allow Access” to your camera and you’re ready.
Scanning a document with Office Lens is incredibly easy—just line the piece of paper up with your camera’s viewfinder. You don’t even have to take a head-on shot, since Office Lens will automatically detect the document and adjust accordingly. When the document is in focus, simply tap the shutter button to capture it.
Next, you’ll be given a chance to crop and adjust the scan, or choose between a photo, document, or whiteboard scan. When you’re done here, tap the “save” icon at the bottom of the screen. On an iPhone, after you’ve adjusted the scan, hit “Done.”
Note: if your scan is upside-down, you’ll have to retake the photo, as there is no way to rotate the image in this menu.
Step 3: Upload Your Document to the Cloud
Immediately after saving the scan, you’ll be asked which Microsoft service you’d like to send this file to. Options here include OneNote, OneDrive, Word, and PowerPoint. Each of these options has an associated cloud service, so choose as many as you’d like and tap the “check” icon at the top of the screen, then your document will be available on these services across all of your devices.
You could also choose to save it to your Gallery (or Photo Library on an iPhone). In addition to these options, the iPhone version also has a Mail option, and you can use the share icon to print it, message it, or share it to another app.
If you pick one of the Microsoft options and haven’t done so already, you’ll be asked to sign in with your Microsoft account credentials at this point. So take care of that, then your document will be automatically uploaded to your cloud services.
If you’re not quite immersed in Microsoft’s ecosystem, there are some good Office Lens alternatives that will work on Android and iOS alike. Google Drive scans documents and uploads them to the cloud just the same, and is available on iPhones and Android devices. Another great option is CamScanner, which includes a free 200 MB cloud storage account.

With One UI 2, your Samsung Galaxy device now has a document scanner built-in, with the ability to automatically detect documents like letters, business cards, and notes that you can scan with just a tap.

As you do, the scanner will highlight the document’s borders with a yellow rectangle, along with a “Scan” button on the center. Hit “Scan” when you’re ready, and the document will be stored in your Galaxy’s Gallery for you to save or share.
This feature is enabled by default once you get the One UI 2 update (aka, Android 10). But if you want to double check, head to the Camera app’s settings, choose “Scene optimizer,” then make sure “Document scan” is turned on.

Time and again, while talking about any post on PDF, I have emphasized on how it’s one of the best file formats for digital transmission. Moreover, we have also seen how to easily create and edit these files on our desktops. But now, things are moving towards smartphones and users are not having the urge to create PDF files directly on smartphones.

So today, I will be talking about some of the apps you can use on your Android and take care all the PDF creation task you would ever need on your smartphone.
Scanning a New PDF Files
So let’s take up the first scenario where you need to scan a few documents and convert them into PDF. The above two apps covers most of the situations where you might need to convert things to a PDF file. One last situation which is however missing is the option to print stuff directly to PDF documents from the apps you have already installed. Devices on Lollipop and above can simply open the printing module and they will get the option to print as PDF.

Microsoft’s Office Lens app lets you use your smartphone as a mobile scanner. Here’s how to use it to scan items and save them to other Microsoft services.
If you have a smartphone, you can utilize the built-in camera as a mobile scanner using Microsoft’s Office Lens app. Office Lens works on iOS, Android, and Windows Phone. It’s a free download from all supported platform App Stores. I have been using the Office Lens a lot lately to scan my receipts and personal documents. Let’s take a look.
Scan Documents and More with Office Lens
For the purposes of this article, I am using the iOS version. After launching Office Lens for the first time, you are greeted by a quick tutorial which gives you an overview of the type of things you can do with Office Lens. Files scanned can be used in other Office apps such as OneNote, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
The most important part of setting up Office Lens on your smartphone is giving it access to the camera.
Office Lens provides four optimized modes for the type of content you are scanning, i.e. business cards, photos, documents, and whiteboard. Swipe left or right to change from document type. To scan a document, place it on a flat surface then position the camera over it. When Office Len recognizes the item, a rectangle will appear around the object. Tap the red button once to capture the image.
After capturing the image, you’ll be provided a couple of options. You can retake the photo or make edits such as cropping.
Depending on the type of content you are scanning, different choices are provided where you can save or export your scanned document. You can save documents for use in OneNote or the iOS Photo Library. A picture or business card, on the other hand, can be saved for to OneDrive, Office apps or converted to PDF.
Another impressive feature is the ability to harvest contact details from a scanned business card and then add it to your contact lists.
The app is not limited to scanning just physical documents and images. From the Settings menu, you can import existing images and view your recent uploads to OneDrive.
Office Lens is perfect for students who want to capture content shared by instructors in class on a whiteboard. It has support for Optical Character Recognition (OCR), which you can use to recognize words, both printed and handwritten. When used with apps such as OneNote, Office Lens makes a handy companion while you’re on the go.

Q. What do you need to scan documents with a smartphone?
A. Depending on the hardware you are using, you just need a smartphone (or tablet) with a working camera and an app to handle the scanning. Once you take a close-up photo of the paper you want to “scan,” the app converts the photo into a standard PDF file that you can use to file electronic receipts, store digitized documents or share by email.
If you have an Android smartphone and use Google Drive, you do not even need to download an additional app because Google Drive includes a document-scanning function. Open the Google Drive app and tap the Add (+) button on the bottom-right corner of the screen. Place the document you want to scan on a flat surface.
Tap the Scan camera icon and hold the phone or tablet over the document to get a clear picture. Once you have snapped the photo, use the Crop button to trim unnecessary background. If you are scanning a multipage document, tap the Add button to go on to the next page and repeat the process. If you are satisfied with the image, tap the Done check mark icon. To redo an unsatisfactory shot, tap the circular Refresh arrow. The resulting files are stored on Google Drive.
The Google Drive app for iOS has a camera function, but it does not create PDF scans of documents. However, Evernote has one free alternative for iOS users with its Scannable mobile app.
Scanbot is another free scanning app with versions for Android and iOS. Some scanning apps may charge a few dollars for a premium version, but include extra features like faxing or optical character recognition for converting images into editable text. Cam Scanner (for Android, iOS and Windows Phone) and TurboScan (for Android and iOS) are two such apps with free and premium versions available.

Sometimes there’s no way around it — you’ve got to use an app. If you need to sign a PDF document from your Android phone, that’s simply how you’ve got to go — unlike iOS, which lets you create a signature using its built-in Markup app, you need to find a third-party source. There are a variety of apps available, but the most well-known is the free version of Adobe Acrobat Reader.
So if you want to be able to sign off on contracts and other PDF documents without having to grab your computer, here’s how to use the Android version of Acrobat to do it:
- Download and install Adobe Acrobat Reader from the Play Store.
- Sign in (or create an account); if you’ve just installed the app, you may have to go through a number of popups offering directions and advice.
- Tap the “Files” icon at the bottom of the screen. It will give you access not only to files saved on your device (you will have to allow access to all files first) but to those saved on Google Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox, Adobe’s Document Cloud. You can also search for PDFs that are attached to Gmail.
On Acrobat’s main screen, select File on the bottom menu.
You can download a PDF from a variety of sources.
- I chose Google Drive. I was invited to access Google Drive and PDFs from Gmail using the same email account; I also had to give the app access to your Google account.
- However you decide to go, choose your source and tap on your PDF file to bring it up in Acrobat. Then tap on the “Edit” icon in the lower right corner.
Once you’ve got your PDF, select the edit icon in the corner.
Select “Fill & Sign.”
- Select “Fill & Sign.”
- Tap on the signature icon in the lower right corner (it looks like a pen nib) and select “Create Signature” (or “Create Initials” if that’s all you need).
Tap on the pen icon in the lower right corner.
Now you can create a signature.
- You’ll get a “Sign Here” box in landscape mode with the options (above the box) to draw your signature, insert an image, or use your camera to photograph a signature drawn on paper. When you’re ready, tap on “Done” in the upper right corner.
You can draw your signature on the screen, use an existing image, or take a photo.
- You’ll be returned to your PDF document. Tap on the area where you want your signature placed. It will appear in a box; you can pull on the sides of the box to make your signature larger or smaller, or tap on the trash icon (that will also appear) to get rid of it. When you’re done, select the checkmark in the upper left corner.
- And you’re done! In the future, when you go into “Fill & Sign” and select the signature icon, the signature you just created will be there to drop into your document. If you want to try again, you can tap the “minus” sign to the right of the signature to delete it.
Now just place and size your signature.
The next time you select the pen icon, your signature will be ready.

In order to successfully use this widget, you need to have three things on the step:
The widget itself. It should be large enough that the operator can see what they are scanning
A trigger that fires “When” “Barcode Scanner (Optical)” is used.
A variable embedded on the step so that the operator can see when they successfully scan the barcode
Here’s how to set up a step that accomplishes this.
Adding the Barcode Scanner Camera Widget
Click the Camera widget and choose “Barcode Scanner”. Resize the widget to whatever size you prefer- this is the window where the operator will be able to see what they are scanning.
You can only have one Barcode Scanner widget per step.
After selecting the widget, you will see the following options in the Context Pane:

By default, all of these are turned “on”. You can turn “off” individual barcode formats, which will also make it possible for the widget to scan barcodes more quickly.
Storing The Output
Now, you need to create a trigger that fires when a barcode is successfully scanned.
Create a trigger on the “Step” tab of the Context Pane, and add the following “when” statement:
WHEN “device” “Barcode Scanner (Optical)” outputs at: “this station” with events “Barcode appeared”
Then, add a “Data Manipulation” “store” statement to store the barcode value in a variable.
“Data Manipulation” “Store” data: “Device Output” “barcode appeared: text” location: “Variable” (variable here)
Finally, if you want to instantly send the operator to another step when the barcode is stored, add a “Go To Step” transition.
Setting Up The Step
Here’s a possible layout for an app that is meant to run on desktop:
The camera widget takes up the top half of the screen.
On the bottom half, there are navigation buttons as well as a text label and embedded variable text, so the operator can see the value of the barcode that was just scanned.
Within the Player, users can also “Flip” and “Rotate” the live view from the camera.
Troubleshooting The Camera Barcode Scanner
The conditions at your workstation will impact the amount of time that the app will take to successfully scan a barcode.
Here are some common limitations that will prevent you from successfully scanning barcodes.
Does your tablet or phone use a modern, high-resolution camera? Many older devices and laptops have low-resolution cameras.
Are you scanning in a well-illuminated area? The camera needs sufficient light to view the contrasts in the barcode.
Are you testing with the same camera that will be used in production? If not, you may get misleading results.
Multiple Examples of Text In View
The scanner works best if there is a single barcode in view. If there are other text sections or other barcodes in view, you should try blocking those with your finger.
If the barcode is printed on wrinkled paper, the scanner will have a hard time reading it.

How to scan multiple scans into one PDF file using Document Scanner app
Step 1: Download and install the Document Scanner by Lufick app from Google Play. Once installed, open the app.
Step 2: Tap on the Plus bubble at the bottom right.
Step 3: Select the ‘Scan from Camera’ option.
Step 4: Tap on the Camera button at the bottom and repeat to take multiple photos.
Step 5: When you’re done taking pictures of a document, tap on the tick icon at the bottom right.
Step 6: In the next screen, you can edit the document and when editing is complete, tap on the right arrow icon at the bottom right.
Step 7: Tap on the tick mark icon after editing all the scanned images.
Step 8: Tap on the Open PDF tab at the bottom. This will check the PDF you just created.
Step 9: Tap on the Save icon at the bottom.
Step 10: Select the Save as PDF option and then tap on OK.

While many document scanning apps let you create a PDF for multiple scans, this tutorial focuses on the Microsoft Office Lens Android app. To save multiple scanned documents in one PDF file using Microsoft Office Lens Android app, follow the steps given below:
- Download Microsoft Office Lens Android app from the Google Play Store.

- Open the app and point your phone towards the first document that you want to scan. Tap the red capture button at the bottom.
- If you want to scan and save only one document tap Save, however, if you want to save multiple scans in one PDF file, tap the camera icon with a plus sign present at the bottom.
- Repeat step 3 for all your files. BTW, in case you are not happy with any document, you can replace it; just tap the replace button at the bottom to replace that particular file.
- Once you are done scanning all your files, tap the Save button.
- Since we want to save multiple scans in one PDF file, you need to log in with your Microsoft account (if you haven’t done yet). Tap “PDF”, give a title to your PDF and hit the tick icon at the top.
The PDF file will be saved to the Downloads folder on your device and it will also be saved to your OneDrive account. If, however, you don’t want to save it as a PDF file, just select the gallery option in the save menu.

How to scan a QR code with an iPhone or iPad
Both iPhones and iPads have a QR scanner built into the camera.
1. With a QR code nearby, open the camera on your iPhone or iPad.
2. Position the camera so the QR code is in frame. Your iPhone or iPad should scan it automatically, without any input needed from you.
Once it scans the code, a notification will appear at the top of your screen with the link to the QR code’s content. Tap this and you’ll be brought to it.

Best android scanner app by far. I’ve tried about 10 apps. This beats camscanner which is decent. I like that you spam us with annoying full screen ads instead of watermark documents.. at least the scans are usable afterwards. I’ll buy if I keep scanning regularly. Your edge detection of black text on white paper placed on a blue yoga mat in a well lit room should be perfect, but it’s not. If you get that right I’ll rate 5 stars 🙂

With schools worldwide shutting down due to the COVID-19 pandemic, remote learning has reached a scale we’ve never seen before.
My scanner has broken! I do have a good camera though so I’ve taken a few photos of the documents I want to scan. However they look like photos of paper, not scanned documents:
- Images aren’t flat
- Lighting isn’t even (shadows as the page warps, etc)
- Text obviously isn’t processed into copy-pasteable PDF text.
They simply aren’t suitable for professional use, but they’re close.
I’m looking for some thing (or method) that can do any or all of the above so I can go from a number of JPG files to a single [optionally] annotated PDF of the whole thing, that’s in the right format (A4 typically).
Any suggestions (short of going out and buying a new scanner)?

There are several ways to do that. Though all my suggeed ways have one problem they won’t really flatten your picture. A more or less good picture would be still required.
One easy way is that you try the software ScanTailor (scantailor.org)
It takes you through 6 steps to optimize your photos. At the last step you can select the option “Equalize illumination” this will give you a nice clean look!
Personally I usually just use GIMP. But you need some basic skills to reach your aim.
- crop the picture in the wanted way
- use the Colors -> Curves option to manipulate the color output in a way you want it.
Another nice little program is gscan2pdf, where you can also load photos and export them as PDF. There is is even a link to GIMP so you can improve the photo with the above described steps.
To generate a printable copy or a PDF from a camera photo of a document we have to manually convert quite a lot achieve an image similar to he output from a scanner. Most of these conversions can be done with Gimp.
Try to make the best you can original source image:
- Choose a bright light to reduce pixel noise, but to avoid reflexions, bleeding, or uneven light dispersion don’t use a flash unless you have a studio flash equipment.
- If possible choose to light the source from at least two sides (top-bottom or right-left)
- Take the photo from a larger distance using a telephoto rather than a wide-angle lens.
- Use a tripod to avoid shaking artifacts.
- Point the camera orthogonal to the surface of the source.
- Include some space bordering the original source.
Consider desaturation to greyscale for better contrast and removal of coloured pixel artifacts.
Adjust brightness and contrast to make the presumably grey background white, and the black letters pitch black.
- This can quickly be done with the Gimp Colors > Levels tool where we can drag the black point (left) and the white point (right) or pick the black/white points with the color picker.
- Shadows on bent corners may no be removed without also removing parts of the text (see 6.)
Remove cushion distortion?
Depending on our photo lens quality and the zoom level we had used we may have some cushion artifacts leading to bending of the document’s outer borders. There are plugins to also remove these artifacts but we may find it quicker to choose a zoom level of our camera where they are minimal only. After cropping (5.) we may not even notice them any more. So removing cushion artifacts may only be needed in case our source image has a lot of straight lines in the outer parts.
Rotate and crop or perspective transform the image if needed.
Unlike a scanner our camera may not get the source in parallel to the image borders. The Gimp Rotate or Perspective tool will give us a visual feedback to be able to rotate or adjust the perspective of an image until the text lines are in parallel to the page.

Now we can select the document source with the rectangle select tool to crop the image inside of the document.
Remove unwanted shadows from bending, folds, or vignetting artifacts from the camera lens.
- These shadows are hard to remove and there is not a plugin or automatic filter to help us.
- We could in theory overlay a gradient fill to these regions but it may not lead to the expected results, hence may not be worth the time we would need.
The quickest method therefore is to simply use the eraser tool to remove all those ugly shadows outside of the text (which we should spare).
Depending on the camera resolution scaling up the image to a scanner image size will only increase the file size but will have no benefit on the image quality. Scaling down will remove details. Thererfore we should not scale the image but adjust the print size from the printer dialog (or below in 8.).
We can import our now nicely manually restored image to LibreOffice (Insert > Media) to
- Define its dimensions
- Export as PDF
- Print (for me printing from LibreOffice leads to a desired result much more often than anything else).
