How to scan qr codes with the iphone’s camera app

Before iOS 11, iPhone users had to download a third-party app in order to scan a QR code. However, this functionality is now built in and you can use the stock Camera app on the iPhone to scan as many QR codes as your heart desires.

If you’re not familiar with QR codes, they’re a special kind of barcode. When scanned, they can take you to a specific website, lead you to a file to download, and even just show a bunch of text about something. For example, if you were at the zoo and there was a QR code next to the lion exhibit, you could scan it to bring up more info about the lions on your phone.

QR codes are pretty great, especially since you can make your own. However, if you just need to scan a QR code, here’s how to do it with your iPhone without needing to download a third-party app.

Start by opening up the Camera app and make sure that it’s set to “Photo” or “Square”. Either of these modes will work.

Point your phone at the QR code like you’re about to take a picture of it. You actually don’t have to get that close to it, but you also can’t be too far away. Below was about the distance that the camera was able to read it without going out any farther.

Depending on what kind of information the QR code contains, the notification will let you interact with it in different ways. For example, if it contains a URL, simply tap on that notification to go that website. If it’s just some text, the notification will display it. Tapping on it will do a Google search for that text.

If the QR code contains contact information, the notification will let you add it to your iPhone’s contact list.

Quick Response (QR) codes give you quick access to websites, phone numbers, and even allow you to share Wi-Fi passwords. Using QR codes can eliminate the annoyance of having to type or remember long texts or web addresses.

Luckily, you do not need an additional app to scan QR codes. You can use the built-in camera on your iPhone to scan a QR code for links to websites, menus, apps, and more. Here’s how to scan a QR code with the Camera app on iPhone in a few simple steps.

It is becoming more and more common for businesses and restaurants to use QR codes for important information and menus. But if you haven’t used one before you may be wondering how to scan QR codes on your iPhone.

QR codes are a popular method for allowing people to access something on the Internet from a piece of paper, or other physical media. Typically the other available option is to put a URL in place of that QR code, but this can often be inconvenient, especially if the URL is lengthy.

The QR code is more useful because you can simply scan it with a compatible app, then be taken directly to the intended location on the Internet. If you have used QR codes previously on your iPhone, then you most likely needed to download a third-party app.

Fortunately this is no longer necessary, as the iPhone’s Camera app is now capable of scanning QR codes. Our tutorial below will show you where to find the setting for this feature so that you can turn it on.

How to Use the QR Scan Reader for iPhone with the Default Camera App

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Choose Camera.
  3. Enable the Scan QR Codes option.

LOTS of products, places and even websites now have QR codes that can be scanned for more information.

If you’re unsure how to do this on your particular smartphone – particularly if you’ve just downloaded the NHS Covid-19 app – then you can try following the steps below.

How to scan qr codes with the iphone’s camera app

    Scanning QR codes on iPhone

Apple users can scan a QR code with their iPhone, iPad or iPod if it has a working camera.

First you need to open the Camera app.

Select the rear facing camera and hover your device over the QR code until it picks it up in the view finder.

Your device should recognise the QR code and a notification will pop up with the link to what the QR code wants to display.

How to scan qr codes with the iphone’s camera app

    Scanning QR codes on Android

Smartphones with Android 9 software or even newer versions can also scan QR codes just by opening the camera and hovering it above the code.

This is because the software knows to automatically open the Google Lens’ QR scanner.

Google Lens can automatically detect the URL and show it to you.

You can also take a photo of a QR code and view it later by opening it in Google Photos and then clicking on the Google Lens icon.

Smartphones using Android 8 need to go to Google Assistant and click the lens icon that should be at the bottom of the screen.

The phone camera will open and you’ll need to point it in the direction of the QR code.

A link should appear or the QR code may be outlined, which means you’ll need to click on it to see some text.

If you’re using Android 7 or below you’ll need to download a QR code app and scan via that.

    Scanning QR codes on Samsung

Samsung phones are, of course, Android phones so the process is pretty similar.

Samsung has put the functionality within its operating system so all you need to do is open the camera, point it at the QR code and the URL should appear in the viewfinder.

Just click on this to open the link.

QR codes that show text only will give you the option to import the message into the Samsung Notes app.

Scanning QR codes on NHS Covid-19 app

If you’re looking to check in to a venue using the NHS Covid-19 app, you’ll first need to download the app from the Google Play or Apple App Stores.

Once you’re in front of an NHS QR code in a pub or restaurant (they’re often posted as signs at the entrance or on your table), open the app.

Tap “Check in venue” and place the NHS QR code within the yellow box that appears on your screen.

A pop-up should appear to confirm you have checked into the venue.

    iPhone tricks to try today

Here are some of the best.

    • Typing cursor – When typing, hold down the space bar to turn your keyboard into a trackpad, letting you move around words and sentences more easily
    • Close all Safari tabs – To do this in one go, simply hold the overlapped squares in the bottom right-hand corner, and press close all tabs
    • Delete lots of photos quickly – Hold down on a photo and then drag your finger diagonally in Photos to select lots of images at once, then hit delete
    • Convert currency quickly – Swipe down from the top of your Home screen (or swipe left to right on an iPhone X), then tap in the bar and type a currency (like $200) and it will automatically covert to your local currency
    • Check if you’re due a battery upgrade – Batteries inside smartphones degrade over time. Just go to Settings > Battery > Battery Health, and check out the Maximum Capacity reading. Generally a battery is considered worn when you’re down to 80% capacity. If you’re below, you can buy a battery swap from Apple
    • Move apps around faster – Hold an app until it starts wiggling, then (while still holding) tap other apps, causing them to stack so you can move them around easier

Quick Response codes, or QR codes, have been around since the mid-’90s, when they were used to track cars in the Japanese automotive industry.

Essentially, a QR code is like a barcode, but with an extra vertical plane of information alongside the horizontal. This means that a QR code can contain much more information.

    DECEMBER 28, 2020

QR codes have become increasingly popular as they’ve made touch-free information sharing very easy. You’ve probably had to scan one at a restaurant to see the menu. In this article, I’ll explain how to scan a QR code on an iPhone!

    What Is A QR Code?

QR stands for Quick Response, and it’s an easy way for your iPhone to read information. After scanning the code, your iPhone opens the page where the information is stored. This information could be a webpage, PDF, social media account, or something else on the web.

How Scanning QR Codes Used To Be

In the past, scanning QR codes required you to download third-party apps from the App Store. However, this is no longer the case with newer versions of iOS. All you’ll need is an iPhone, your camera app, and clear line of sight to the QR code.

How To Scan A QR Code On iPhone

The best part about QR codes is how easy they are to scan and use. You can use the built-in camera on your device to scan the codes. In order to do so, follow these steps:

    1. Open Camera or the QR Code Scanner.
    2. If using Camera, select the rear Camera.
    3. Line your iPhone up so the QR code appears directly in the center of the screen.
    4. As soon as your iPhone scans the code, you’ll receive a notification to open the link, or the link will open automatically.

Applies to: iPhone 8, iPhone X, iPhone SE, iPhone 11, iPhone 12

Various smart phones today, including the iPhone, can scan barcodes and QR Codes that are commonly encountered.

Barcode or QR Code is a code with a certain black pattern that contains a set of information related to a product or other.

Usually you will find barcodes on packaged products while QR Codes are more often used as links that direct you to a specific URL to view more information.

But for you iPhone users, you need to know that support for scanning barcodes or new QR Codes is directly available on the default camera on the iOS 11 operating system or above.

Meanwhile, if you use an iPhone with iOS 10 or below, you need to install a third-party application first from the Apple App Store.

How to Scan Barcode and QR Code on iPhone

    With the Default Camera App

    1. Make sure your iPhone is using iOS 11 or above
    2. Open the iPhone’s default camera app
    3. Point the camera at the barcode
    4. Wait until the Barcode or QR Code is scanned
    5. Press the notification regarding the product information that appears
    6. Next you will be directed to a search engine or a special page

    With Power Scanner App

    1. Download and install Power Scanner – QR & Barcode from the Apple App Store
    2. Run the app once installed
    3. On the main page of the application, select the Scan menu with the camera icon
    4. Point the iPhone camera at the barcode to be scanned
    5. After the barcode has been scanned successfully, the numeric code data will appear followed by several Google Search menus , Amazon Search , Internet UPC Database , or Copy to Clipboard
    6. You can choose Google Search to directly search for it

How to scan qr codes with the iphone’s camera app

Interestingly, the Amazon Search menu in the Power Scanner application allows you to search for items in the Amazon marketplace with the barcode. While Copy to Clipboard will copy the scanned code.

Actually there are many applications on the iPhone as well that you can choose to scan barcodes. But in my opinion, the Power Scanner – QR & Barcode application is very easy to use because the menu is not complicated and how to use it is simple.

Moreover, there is a menu that makes it easy to search for goods directly such as Google Search and Amazon Search in it.

A QR code is a type of two-dimensional barcode that can be read by devices with a camera or specialized barcode reader. QR codes are often used to launch websites or trigger specific actions within an app. Some QR codes even allow users to pay for goods, such as gasoline, as an alternative form of touchless payment.

You can use your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to read QR codes. In fact, your camera app already does this.

How to scan QR codes on an iPhone

    1. Open the Camera app
    2. Point your camera at a QR code
    3. Tap the popup that appears

That’s it — seriously! The iPhone Camera app automatically detects QR codes and pops up a tooltip to allow you to launch the code whenever you’d like.

You can try it out on this QR code, which launches AppleInsider — just point your phone’s camera at the screen.

You can also add a dedicated QR code scanner to your Control Center. The dedicated scanner is helpful for scanning QR codes in dark environments, as it enables you to use your camera’s flash as a light to illuminate the code.

How to scan qr codes with the iphone’s camera app

Though they’ve been around since the ’90s, quick response codes didn’t catch on until the age of smartphones and widespread mobile internet access. Now, they’re easier than ever to scan and, if you have an iPhone, you can make it happen in just a few clicks without any extra apps.

You’ll find QR codes everywhere — from product labels to restaurant menus to workplace equipment instructions — so knowing how to quickly scan can help you make the most of them and keep more information at your fingertips. Let’s take a look at how to scan QR codes on iPhones.

    What Is a QR Code?

A QR code is a type of barcode that’s easy for digital devices to scan. Their classic square, pixelated design lends itself to some attractive designs. Unlike standard barcodes, which only scan horizontally, QR codes are more practical and functional because users can scan them in any orientation. This two-way design also gives QR codes the advantage of storing much more information than traditional barcodes. QR codes are also useful because they are still legible even if up to 30% of the code gets damaged.

With all their versatility and slick appearances, you’ll find QR codes all over the place, such as the following.

    • Restaurants: In the age of contactless service, many restaurants and bars place QR codes on their tables. Diners can scan the QR code to access the menu online, and the restaurants can easily update their food and drink offerings.
    • Products: Want to see more detailed specs or nutrition info on the item you’re buying? Scan the QR code.
    • Ads: Instead of telling users to type in a long web address to buy or learn more, invite them to scan the code.
    • Coupons, tickets and memberships: Pull any of these up on your phone, and you may get a QR code to show the scanner. Some QR codes can add passes and tickets directly to the Wallet app.
    • Business identification: From warehouses to medical facilities, many businesses use QR codes to identify and track products, devices and equipment.

QR codes often open websites, but they can also launch an app you have installed or enter numbers into a system.

How to Scan a QR Code

If you have an iPhone or iPad, scanning QR codes is as easy as opening your camera app. This feature is native to the device, so you don’t have to download any additional apps or tools.

Scanning a QR Code From the Camera App

Here’s how to scan a QR code on an iPhone or iPad.

    1. Open your camera app. If you don’t have it on your Home Screen, you can access it from the Control Center. A faster way to access the camera is via the camera icon on your Lock Screen.
    2. From the rear-facing camera, put the QR code in view. Don’t click the shutter. The device should recognize the QR code and display a preview of where it leads, such as a website’s URL.
    3. Click the link that appears. Click the yellow preview and the link will open in. your default browser, such as Safari or Google Chrome.

You’ll need a mobile signal or Wi-Fi for this to work.

Scanning a QR Code From Photos

You can also scan a QR code from a static image. You might want to do this if you can’t get the code to scan the usual way, don’t have internet access or want to save the code for later.

Here’s how to scan a QR code from a photo on iPhone.

    1. Take a photo of the QR code: Snap a picture of the QR code from the Camera app. To scan a QR code on your iPhone screen, such as one displayed on a website or email, screenshot it and follow these next steps.
    2. Open the photo in the Photos app: You can open Photos from the icon on your Home Screen, the image on the bottom left of the Camera app or the phone’s search bar.
    3. Select the Live Text icon: This circular button appears in the bottom right and has a picture of a rounded square with lines in it.
    4. Click on the QR code: Tap the code and a preview should appear telling you where the code leads. Click on that banner.

Scanning a QR Code From the Control Center

Another way to scan a QR code is from Apple’s designated Code Scanner. It’s similar to the camera app, but opens the code automatically and offers a bigger viewfinder.

Before you can use Code Scanner, you’ll need to set it up in the Control Center.

    1. From the Settings app, click on Control Center and tap the “+” button next to Code Scanner. Doing so adds the feature to your Control Center, which appears when you swipe down from the top right-hand corner of the screen — or the bottom of the screen on models with a home button. You can also find it by swiping down on your Home Screen and using the search bar that appears.
    2. Select Code Scanner from the Control Center or Spotlight. Open the Control Center and select Code Scanner. It appears as a miniature QR code.

Other Ways to Scan QR Codes With an iPhone

Some other ways to scan a QR code include the following.

    • Third-party scanning apps: You’ll find plenty of scanning apps on the App Store. Some are no-frills, and others offer additional features like saving and sharing codes and syncing them with iCloud and other devices.
    • Other apps: Many apps you might already use can scan QR codes, too. For example, Snapchat and Twitter use QR codes as “ID cards,” so users can scan someone’s QR code to follow or add them as a friend. Pinterest allows users to create QR codes to share specific boards and pins, while retailer apps might allow you to scan a QR code from a printed mailer to add coupons to your account.

The Redmond company Microsoft would like to update the camera app integrated into Windows 10 and equip it with a new, practical feature. Users should soon be able to scan and read QR codes directly via the application.

    Useful on mobile devices

The camera app is a useful tool for taking pictures or videos quickly, especially on mobile devices. Since the application is rarely used on desktop PCs, Microsoft has only provided the program with a few features so far. Now the Redmond-based company has planned an update with a new function.

    The Feature is currently unavailable

This is a QR code scanner. The feature is currently still hidden so that it cannot be used by normal users so far. As can be seen from a screenshot by Aggiornamenti Lumia, Microsoft has added a button for scanning barcodes and QR codes to the selection bar on the right-hand edge.

QR codes can refer to the store

After the camera app has captured a QR code, the user can display the content or open the website behind the link. This also includes references to the Microsoft Store, with which apps can be purchased and installed.

It is still unclear when Microsoft will officially start rolling out the new QR code scanner or when the function will be available to all users. It is conceivable that the feature will be built into the app with an update in the next few weeks.

You can quickly scan QR codes straight from the Control Center on iPhone and iPad. Here’s how to enable the feature right now.

iPhone and iPad Feature a Dedicated QR Scanner App, Here’s How to Use it

At this point, you’ve probably scanned hundreds of QR codes using the Camera app on your iPhone and iPad. But, did you know that iOS and iPadOS actually has a dedicated QR scanner app built right in? Once the feature is enabled, scanning a code becomes way too easy and you do not have to fight with your iPhone to tap on the link for more details. You can quickly access this app straight from the Control Center which is nothing but a huge convenience.

This scanner is extremely simple to use. Just point your phone or tablet towards the code, and it will instantly do its magic. No more trying to click on a floating link as you do in the camera app as the built-in scanner is instant when it comes to opening links. Here’s how to enable the feature right now.

    Tutorial

Step 1. Launch the Settings app on your iPhone and iPad.

Step 2. Tap on Control Center.

Step 5. Point the iPhone, iPad camera to the code you want to scan and it will instantly open the relevant app to reveal more information.

How to scan qr codes with the iphone’s camera app

The most amazing thing about this feature is how it instantly opens up a web link right within the app itself. This is a great little feature if you do not want to add a brand new tab to Safari. In fact, you also get the option to open the link in Safari instead, if it’s something important so you can save it for later.

If it’s a YouTube link you’re scanning, the Code Scanner app will instantly launch the YouTube app (if it’s installed) on your iPhone and iPad so you can get straight into the action without waiting.

There is even a flashlight button in the app, allowing you to illuminate a QR code if the need arises.

The only real downside of this app is this; it doesn’t take photos or videos, which means you can’t actually save an image of the QR code if you wanted to. For that, the Camera app is the way to go.

How to scan qr codes with the iphone’s camera appQR codes are a thing again. Once very popular, people stopped using QR codes before a resurgence over the last year saw the digital information labels become important again. Android tablets and smartphones have been able to scan QR code for years, but Apple was behind the curve. Indeed, it’s only recently Cupertino added the functionality to iPhones and iPads with the release of iOS 11.
If you are not running that iOS version because your device is not compatible, there is no in-built way to scan QR code. That may be a problem because the codes are useful for a lot of things, including buying tickets, finding contact info, viewing links, and more. In this guide, we will show you the two very easy ways to unlock the power of QR code scanning on your iPhone or iPad.

Method 1: Use the default app to scan QR code (starting from iOS 11)

Many millions of people with iPhones and iPads have upgraded to iOS 11. Apple has good adoption of new software versions, and by January 2018 iOS 11 was on over 65% of all iPhones and iPads. With the launch of the software, Apple finally relented and included QR code scanning as standard in its camera technology.
That means users can simply use their device to scan QR codes, without the need to download a third-party app. What’s more, the process is very simple as we found out while testing on an iPhone 8 Plus and an iPad Pro 10.5:
Step 1. Open the camera on an iPhone or iPad
Step 2. Hold the camera up to the desired QR code
Step 3. The camera app can automatically detect codes without the user needing to press the shutter. (Remember, you will need to have a connection through either mobile signal or Wi-Fi.)
Step 4. Once the code is scanned, a notification will appear. Pressing the notification will take you to the QR code destination via a web browser.

As mentioned, most users will have a device compatible for iOS 11. If your iPhone or iPad is not on the software version and is compatible, you should update to get the QR scanning feature. The devices compatible with iOS 11 are iPhones starting from the fifth series.

Method 2: Download a QR code scanner app for iPhone

If you are running an iOS device that will not update to iOS 11, your options are limited in terms of a built-in QR code reader. Apple included QR reading functionality in its Wallet app for digital payment purposes, but that does not help people who scan QR code for company information, purchases in an online store, or to download data.
Wallet would scan some codes, but only those it considered “passes,” while all other codes returned an error message. There’s also the small fact that Apple Wallet does not run on iPad and is unavailable in the App Store for the tablet.
Like most problems on iOS, there is a third-party app that can come to the rescue. In the App Store there are dozens, if not hundreds of QR code scanner apps for iPhone from third-party developers. We had an old iPad Mini running iOS 10.2 lying around so decided to test out QR Code, which adds a scanning functionality to the camera.
As you may expect, the app does what it says on the tin. When you first open QR Code, you will need to give the app permission to use the iPhone or iPad camera. Once the permission is granted, you just need to point the camera screen at the QR code. This is trickier on an iPad compared to an iPhone, but the scanner will eventually line up and automatically read the code and provide a notification. Tapping the notification will bring you to the code destination.

It is worth pointing out that QR Code is certainly not the only app that will get the job done. There are numerous third-party apps that each offer a similarly quick and efficient way to scan QR code, so we suggest you take a quick look through the App Store to find the best for you.

How to scan a QR code on an iPhone

But documents aren’t the only item you can scan with your iPhone. Another of the iOS 11 updates was the addition of a QR Code scanner, which Apple integrated seamlessly into the camera app.

QR Codes are square matrix barcodes made up of smaller white and black squares. They were first used in Japan’s automotive industry in the mid-1990s but are now used worldwide by companies who want to save you the hassle of having to type out a specific web address.

It’s now super quick and easy to access the web address linked to the QR Code via your iPhone. Here’s what you need to do:

    1. Open your camera and position it so that the entire QR code image is visible. The iPhone will detect the barcode and put a yellow box around it.

    2. Once it’s been scanned, a notification bubble will appear at the top of the screen. Click this bubble to be taken to the website associated with the QR Code.

In the past, to scan a QR code onto iPhone or any other mobile device required you to download a QR code app. While there are still many QR code scanning apps still out available, you don’t need a special app just to view or scan a QR code on your iPhone.

The latest iPhones will open a QR code simply by scanning the code with the Camera app. To scan a QR code using the iPhone, follow the simple steps below.

Steps to View or Scan a QR Code on iPhone

Step 2: Point the camera at the QR Code you want to scan or view.

Step 3: Your camera will see the QR Code and a dropdown will show up that says “Open website.com in Safari”. Click on this box and the QR code will open up the website or download the content.

This is the final step. You have now successfully viewed or downloaded a QR code using your iPhone.

Do I need any other apps to scan a QR code on my iPhone?

As mentioned above, in the past you needed a special app in order to scan a QR code. There were many QR code scanners for mobile phones available. With recent advancements in iOS, you no longer need to download a QR code scanning app. Simply use your Camera app following the steps listed above.
