This awesome new feature lacks some options versus emoji search on the Mac, however. As an example, you cannot set a specific emoji character as your favorite.

    How’s emoji search useful?

That said, now you can at least find the right emoji on an iPhone easier than before. It’s certainly more helpful than having to scroll through a seemingly endless list of emoji in iOS 13.

Emoji search is especially appealing to people who don’t use emoji much. I do wish, however, that emoji matches were displayed bigger for folks like yours truly who have vision problems.

And that’s how you use the iPhone emoji search feature in iOS 14.

    Emoji popover on iPad

A similar emoji search option is, unfortunately, non-existent on the iPad.

How to search for a specific emoji on iphoneiPad gets emoji popover instead of emoji search with iPadOS 14

On the other hand, iPadOS 14 has an emoji popover menu. While lacking built-in emoji search feature, the popover makes it easy to enter emoji when using a hardware keyboard.

iOS 13, iPadOS 14 and macOS Big Sur also let you use emoji in more places than before. In the Messages app, you can personalize a group chat photo with an appropriate emoji.

In Reminders, lists can be personalized with emoji. And if you use Memoji, you’ll like that iOS 14, iPadOS 14 and macOS Big Sur allow you to put a face covering on your Memoji.

    New emoji coming in 2020

After iOS 14, iPadOS 14, macOS 11 Big Sur and watchOS 7 release publicly this fall, one of the subsequent point updates will bring additional emoji. According to Apple’s preview of these new emoji, we’ll see the addition of a ninja, lungs, bubble tea, a beaver and much more.

How to search for a specific emoji on iphoneLater in 2020, we’ll get a bunch of new emoji along with tweaks to existing ones

These upcoming emoji additions are all part of the major Emoji 13.0 release, approved by the Unicode organization. Aside from Apple, Google, Microsoft and other major tech giants may create their own designs for the emoji approved in the latest batch release.

iOS 14 will finally let you search for emoji right from the emoji keyboard, according to Apple’s site listing all of the new iOS 14 features.

Right now, finding the exact emoji you want across the hundreds of emoji available on the iOS keyboard can be a frustrating experience. If I don’t already know where to find a specific emoji, I often default to “searching” by typing a word and hoping that iOS’ keyboard will auto-suggest the correct emoji equivalent.

Finding an emoji seems as if it will be a lot easier in iOS 14 thanks to a new search bar. “A new search field for the emoji keyboard lets you search for the perfect emoji,” reads the description of the feature on Apple’s website. “Enter a commonly used word or phrase such as ‘heart’ or ‘smiley face’ and you will be presented with corresponding emoji to choose from.”

For years, macOS has offered a way to search for emoji in Messages and across the OS via a keyboard shortcut. Having a way to search for emoji in iOS’ keyboard is a welcome addition.

In today’s virtual Worldwide Developers Conference keynote, Apple also announced that iOS 14 will have widgets, a picture-in-picture mode, a new translation feature, pinned conversations in Messages, the ability for users to set default email apps and browsers, and more.

If you like adding emojis to messages, you’ve probably been frustrated by the way your iPhone traditionally handles those small images. When typing certain words, the iPhone would sometimes suggest related emojis – but you couldn’t simply search for them, until iOS 14. Here’s how.

How to search for emojis on iPhone

    1. Start an app that opens the keyboard, like Messages or Mail, so the keyboard is displayed on-screen.

    2. Tap the emoji icon at the lower left corner to switch to the emoji keyboard. If you have additional keyboards installed, the icon might look like a globe, and may bypass the emoji keyboard. To ensure you get to the emoji keyboard, tap and hold the icon, then tap “Emoji” in the pop-up menu.

    Switch to the emoji keyboard.

    3. Tap the field called “Search Emoji” above the emojis.

The emoji keyboard now has its own text field for searching.

    Dave Johnson/Business Insider

    4. Type a search term. You can search for any common term to find a suitable emoji – you can search for cat, dog, heart, girl, flag, or countless other terms.

Search for your desired emoji and tap it when you see the one you want.

    5. If you see the emoji you want to use, tap it to insert it into the message as you normally would.

Since their introduction, emoji have become as essential to the iPhone as the touchscreen itself. While the original set of emoji was manageable, finding a particular emoji these days has become a chore. Apple tried to make it easier in past iOS versions, but it has avoided adding the most sensible option — until now.

For the past several years, Apple has added new emoji to iOS in the fall. Today, there are more than 1,700 available, and that’s not including variations like skin tones and hair colors. With that many choices, not only can it be hard to find the emoji you’re looking for, but it’s also nearly impossible to keep track of all of the new emoji that get added each year.

With iOS 14, Apple has finally added an emoji search tool to its default QuickType keyboard, meaning every emoji is now just a few taps away. Many third-party keyboards, such as Gboard, already had emoji searches, but you don’t need them anymore if that was the only reason you were using them.

Before iOS 14, if you wanted to find a particular emoji, you could hope the right emoji prediction would show up in the suggestions bar. If not that, then the tap to replace feature was the next best thing. Both of those have been around since iOS 10. You could also hope to find it in your frequently used section or use the quick browser. But none of those beat a simple search bar to search by the emoji name.

Using the New Emoji Search Feature

To get started using the new emoji search, tap in a text field and bring up the Emoji keyboard. You can bring up the emoji picker from within the stock QuickType keyboard using one of the following:

    • Face ID models: Tap the smiley icon in the bottom left or, if you’ve added third-party keyboards, to the left of the space bar.
    • Touch ID models: Tap the smiley icon to the left of the space bar.
    • All models: If you have one or more third-party keyboards set up and don’t see the smiley icon, either tap the globe icon until you reach the Emoji keyboard or tap-and-hold, then slide your finger up to “Emoji.”

Once you have the emoji picker open, you’ll notice a new “Search Emoji” field at the top of the keyboard. Tap on it, and the emoji picker will turn back into a keyboard that you can use to type in search terms.

You’ll also notice a row of emoji between the search field and the keyboard. Popular ones appear right away, but as you type in your search terms, the row will update to show you all of the emoji that match the text or numbers so far.

You can also scroll the row of emoji horizontally, revealing more emoji for you to choose from. Once you find the emoji you’re looking for, simply tap it, and it will be added to the field you were typing into.

Sometimes, your search will show a specific emoji, which is great if that’s what you were looking for. But this may not happen often given how many emoji there are.

When you’re done, or if you change your mind and want to browse emoji instead, tap the button to the right of the space bar with the emoji icons on it, or use the globe icon to return to “Emoji.” If you want to start typing regular text again right away, just tap in the text field to open the regular keyboard.

Searching for Emoji Without Apple’s Keyboard

If you don’t have iOS 14 installed, there are a few third-party keyboards that you can also use to search emoji. One of the most popular options is Google’s Gboard. It features many of the same features as Apple’s, but with a few little differences.

First, Apple’s keyboard takes a little more vertical space to add in the search field but also shows a lot more emoji at once compared to Gboard.

How to search for a specific emoji on iphone How to search for a specific emoji on iphone

On the other hand, once you start searching, Gboard takes up much more vertical space (including a very unnecessary Google logo) but can show way more emoji from your search results.

Both take only one tap in the text field (not the search field) to go back to the regular keyboard from the emoji picker after a search, which is a nice trick if you didn’t know about it already.

Aside from Gboard, Grammarly and SwiftKey can also let you perform emoji searches. Whether you choose to stick to Apple’s default keyboard or jump to a third-party alternative, emoji search is a handy tool that can make sure the facepalm emoji is never far away.

How to search for a specific emoji on iphone

Who hasn’t, at one point or another, spent an excessive amount of time searching for a specific emoji? The larger the emoji library becomes, the more time it takes to find those one-offs. iOS 14 and iPadOS 14 added a much-needed search box specifically for finding emoji.

Although a simple feature overall, its contribution to improving the iPhone/iPad experience is inadmissible. What’s best, search results begin to populate the moment text gets entered into the search box. Like most search tools these days, iOS 14’s emoji search feature doesn’t require the full word/name to list results. This undoubtedly reduces swiping time when fumbling for that hard-to-find emoji.

In this Visi tutorial, we’ll show how to use the emoji search box when writing text with an iPhone or iPad.

For this article, we used an iPhone 7 running iOS 14.

How do you get the 3x bigger emoji in iMessage?

Bigger emoji are better emoji. They let you see all the details and convey all the emotions. If you’re running iOS 10, iMessage can now show you emoji at three times the normal size. But only under certain circumstances.

How to search for emoji in iOS 14

In iOS 14, Apple has add the ability to search throgh the emoji on your iPhone (at present, this capability isn’t availalbe on iPad).

Apple occasionally offers updates to iOS, iPadOS, watchOS, tvOS, and macOS as closed developer previews or public betas. While the betas contain new features, they also contain pre-release bugs that can prevent the normal use of your iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, Apple TV, or Mac, and are not intended for everyday use on a primary device. That’s why we strongly recommend staying away from developer previews unless you need them for software development, and using the public betas with caution. If you depend on your devices, wait for the final release.

Updated July 2020: Updated for the latest iOS updated.

How to search for a specific emoji on iphone

World Emoji Day is July 17, and that can only mean one thing: sending endless animated texts to all of your friends and family, with as many unicorns, mermaids, and piles of poop as you can. But with all of that celebration might come a little bit of fatigue. No one wants to spend several minutes of their day scrolling through all of the options — which is probably why you’re looking for an easier way to search for emojis.

The good news is that there are a few hacks available for you to keep all your favorite emojis at thumb’s length. From apps to keyboard shortcuts, you’ll be covered now that the fifth annual World Emoji Day is about to be here in full force. What’s more, the reason why the holiday takes place on July 17 has to do with emojis themselves: the only emoji revealing a date is the calendar emoji, which is forever stopped at July 17. If you check out the official site for World Emoji Day, you can stay on top of the events as they happen — and even cast your vote for the best new emoji of 2019 (the best new emoji in 2018 was “thinking face”).

In the meantime, here are the three easiest ways to ensure your favorite emojis are always available to you right when you need them:

    Predictive Text Feature

If you don’t want to download a new app, you can always try taking more advantage of a little hack that’s built right into the emoji keyboard itself. The predictive text feature basically takes the words you’re typing and offers emoji suggestions to add. For example, if you’re inviting a friend to coffee, the predictive text feature will offer the coffee cup emoji. Or if you type the word “dog,” the dog emojis will show up.

In other instances, if you’re referencing an emotion like happiness, the feature will offer up multiple applicable emojis. And the best part is that you don’t have to download anything or make any changes to your keyboard — the emojis will automatically appear directly below your text box, as can be seen in the image above. Both iPhone and Android should provide the predictive text feature for you. If you have an Android, you can also consider some of these apps to auto-suggest emojis for you as you type.

To view all the emoji, scroll to the right or select an icon at the bottom to jump to that category of emoji (categories were introduced in iOS 8.3). Inserting an emoji in a message is as simple as selecting where you want it to go and then tapping the emoji from the tray.

To hide the emoji keyboard and return to the normal layout, tap the globe or alphabet key.

    How to Use Multicultural Emoji

For years, the standard set of emoji available on the iPhone featured only white traits, like white faces and white hands. Apple worked with the Unicode Consortium, the group that controls emoji, to change the standard set to reflect a more diverse selection.

However, you have to perform a keyboard trick to see the multicultural options. Here’s how:

These steps are relevant for devices with iOS 8.3 or newer.

Open the emoji keyboard from an app that supports it.

Find an emoji that’s a single human face or hand, and tap and hold it.

With the new menu visible, slide your finger up into the panel to land on the emoji you want to use, and then lift your finger to insert the hidden emoji.

Your iPhone has a hidden emoji feature that few people know about.

It lets you flood a recipient with a screen filled with emoji – and it looks fantastic.

Apple has fitted its iPhone with loads of clever hacks, but they’re not all immediately obvious.

Fortunately, one iPhone fan on TikTok has revealed a brilliant hidden emoji feature.

First, go into iMessage by opening up Apple’s Messages app.

Then open a chat with someone and type an emoji into the text space.

Instead of hitting send, press and hold on the Send icon.

This will unlock a hidden page that lets you send your message with an effect.

Now you want to tap Screen at the top and then choose to Send With Echo.

This will let you flood the screen with loads of emoji when the recipient reads the text.

And they can replay the ‘Echo’ over and over again.

You can even choose multiple emoji in a single message.

And this will cause a flood of all of the emoji you chose.

Simply type in a few different emoji to create a multi-icon ‘Echo’.

If you can’t see this feature, make sure you’re using the latest version of iOS.

To check, go into Settings > General > Software Update.

You’ll be able to update to the latest iOS update if you haven’t already.

If you’ve ever perused emojipedia — or explored different messaging platforms — you’ll see that while the meaning of emoji is generally consistent, the artwork varies depending on your device’s operating system. If you’re getting bored with the built-in emoji keyboard on your phone , we have good news: There are dozens of emoji keyboards that you can download and use instead, that offer everything from animated emoji to gifs to stickers to themes.

Here are five emoji keyboards for iPhone and Android to check out if you want to spice up your text messages.

If you’ve got an Android phone, Gboard might already be installed for you. (I use a Google Pixel 5 , and Gboard is my default keyboard .) On top of handy features like swipe-to-text, Gboard lets you search for emoji, keep track of your most-used emoji, add stickers — even animated ones — to your texts, and use gifs and old-fashioned emoticons. Gboard is available to download free for Android and iOS.

To use Gboard, install it from the App Store or Google Play. Afterwards, users should go into Settings and tap Enable (Android) or Get Started (iOS). If you’re downloading for iOS, you’ll need to manually enable many of the permissions to use most of the Google features.

    Microsoft SwiftKey

SwiftKey learns your writing style, even your slang, nicknames and favorite emoji — which, along with its customization features, sets it apart from other keyboards. You can add free themes to your keyboards, as well as individual themes and theme packs in the SwiftKey Store.

SwiftKey offers emoji prediction as well (typing “love,” for example, might offer a ❤️ emoji in the prediction bar). You can turn this off in the app’s settings, though.

To enable SwiftKey and make it your default keyboard on Android, go to Settings > Language & input > SwiftKey. To set it up on iOS, tap General > Keyboard > Add New Keyboard. You’ll see all the keyboards you have installed on your device. Choose SwiftKey to enable it. To make it your default, click Edit and drag it to the top of the list.

    Bitmoji

You can use Bitmoji with other keyboards, like Gboard.

If you’ve used Snapchat, you’ve likely seen Bitmoji — little cartoon avatars styled after the user. Bitmoji ties in with other apps besides Snapchat too. For example, Gboard is the default keyboard on my Pixel 5, but you can choose to Install Bitmoji from the toolbar. It adds another level of personalization since your Bitmoji is incorporated into almost every sticker.

The keyboard is free for iOS and Android. To set it up on Android, you can do so manually or through the Bitmoji app. After you sign up in the app, tap the Globe icon to open the Keyboard tab and follow the prompts to enable the keyboard. To manually set up the keyboard, install the app and go to Settings. From there tap Languages and input > Virtual (or On-screen keyboard) > Manage Keyboards > toggle on Bitmoji Keyboard.

    Fleksy

Fleksy has a slew of emoji and themes to have fun with.

Fleksy is a free keyboard download with in-app purchases for Android and iOS. The keyboard has thousands of emoji — with recommendations based on your texting habits — as well as gifs to pepper your texts with. Fleksy has keyboard themes like anime and chameleon, as well as built-in mini apps like memoji stickers, typing games, different keyboard sounds and spellcheck.

To use Fleksy in iOS, download the app, choose Settings > General > Keyboard > Turn on Fleksy. You’ll also need to allow full access to use all the keyboard’s features. For Android, you’ll go through Settings > Languages and input > Virtual (or On-screen keyboard) > Manage Keyboards.
