How to secure your tiktok account

Although modern social media apps and platforms have come a long way in terms of security, there’s still a pretty significant distance to cover in this regard. Platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram are still prone to large-scale hacks and data theft, and although this doesn’t happen frequently, it’s still possible to have your data stolen or compromised by hackers. Of course, since TikTok is still ridiculously popular – despite a potentially looming permanent ban in the US – it’s no exception when it comes to security breaches.

With that in mind, you might be wondering how you can make your account as secure as possible. Of course, one of the most important and useful ways you can do this is to change your password, but that’s not the only thing you can do. Some people have suggested that changing your password regularly may actually lead to you forgetting passwords; although it will never have a detrimental effect, if you don’t note down passwords or keep them memorised, you’ll regularly forget them, meaning you won’t be able to log in to your favourite services. You should definitely still change your password regularly, but it’s not all about that.

So, how exactly do you change your password on TikTok? Luckily, the actual process is very simple. You will, of course, need a crucial thing before you change your TikTok password. You’ll need to have the app installed; you won’t be able to change anything about your account from the browser-based version of TikTok, which is extremely limited in its functionality. If you’re already a fan of TikTok, you probably have the mobile version installed already, but if you’ve uninstalled it for whatever reason, you’ll need to download it again.

After you’ve reinstalled the TikTok app (or if you already have it installed), simply head over to your profile. We’re assuming you’ve logged into TikTok for this tutorial; if not, you’ll obviously need to log in first.

Click the three dots in the top right corner of the menu. From here, you’ll see a “Manage My Account” option.

Once you’ve hit “Manage My Account”, you’ll then be given a list of options to choose from. Select “Password”. Note: don’t pick the Privacy option from the menu. Believe it or not, this doesn’t have anything to do with your password settings, although you’d be forgiven for thinking it does.

If you have two-factor authentication enabled, you’ll be asked to input your phone number so TikTok can send you a one-time authentication code. Go ahead and input the code you get from the SMS.

Once this is done, you’ll have the chance to change your password. Remember to pick something strong, but memorable. We’re big fans of this XKCD comic explaining how to create an almost infallible password.

How else can you secure your TikTok account?

While coming up with a new and better password is definitely going to help you secure your TikTok account, it’s not the only way you can ensure your profile is safe from hackers. The best and most secure way to ensure your account is safe is to add two-factor authentication (2FA), meaning you’ll have to input additional methods for TikTok to contact you when you’re inputting your password. Here’s how to do just that. Don’t worry, it’s a safe and painless process and only involves providing TikTok with your mobile number and email address.

First, navigate to “Me” and then “Manage My Account” as we discussed above.

After you’ve done this, you should see a space to add your phone number and email address. When you have added this information, every time you try to log into TikTok, you’ll get a message on your phone which contains a code to help you log in. This is easier than using a password and also makes sure you are always able to authenticate yourself; after all, if you’re using TikTok, you’re probably going to have your smartphone with you, so you should be able to check an SMS, whereas it’s very easy to forget a password.

Once you’ve done this, you’ll need to navigate to the Security window and select “2-factor authentication”. You’ll be given a choice between phone and email, and you can choose which method you’d like to use in order to authenticate your account. As we said above, your phone is likely the best option, since you’ll have it with you at all times, but you can pick email if you like.

From keeping your account safe to curating who can view your liked content, we look at how you can increase your security and privacy on TikTok

TikTok, one of the most recent additions to the roster of major social media platforms, has been enjoying immense popularity since its debut three years ago. The app is available across more than 150 countries and has hundreds of millions of active users worldwide. Millions of people create, share, and watch videos, as well as engage with each other on a daily basis, with some doing for it fun, while others are trying to make a career out of it hoping to be the next big influencer.

TikTok is also making headlines for other reasons, with India instituting a ban on the video app and the US government taking steps to ban all transactions with ByteDance, TikTok’s parent company. The video app has also been fined by the United States’ Federal Trade Commission for violating the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act and by South Korean authorities for mishandling children’s data.

The app’s users face challenges similar to those on other social media platforms; these include scammers, spammers, and cyberbullies. In this article, we’ll guide you through the privacy and security options TikTok provides its users in order to secure and protect their accounts.

Securing your TikTok account

When you sign up, you have the option to do so using one of the popular single sign-on options as well as using your phone number or email. As far as managing your account goes, TikTok keeps it pretty much straightforward and the settings are all unsurprisingly housed under “Manage my account”.

The platform allows you to authenticate your account either by sending a verification text message to your phone number or authenticating it using your email. To be on the safe side, you can go for both options. If you want to add a password, you’ll again be authenticated using a text message; only then can you create one. It may look like a nifty option, but it is worth noting that besides these text messages there is no two-factor authentication option, something that most prominent social media platforms offer.

Besides the standard array of options we’ve already mentioned, you also have the Security option in the same menu. This has an overview of any security alerts that you should know about, such as any suspicious account activity. You can also monitor all the devices that you’re logged in on. It shows you the device, the means by which you logged into the account (e.g. Facebook account), and when. You can simply log out of the devices by tapping on them in the menu and then tapping Remove.

Privacy and safety options

This basically functions as your hub for managing all the permissions and access related to your account. When you create your account on TikTok, it’s public by default; you can toggle the option in the Discoverability section as well as whether the app should suggest your account to users who might be interested in it.

How to secure your tiktok account

As for safety, you could say TikTok tries to take a comprehensive approach. One of the options it gives you is to decide whether other users can or can’t download your videos, but currently, it is running only on a trial basis. However, users can circumvent the ban on downloading videos by screen-grabbing it.

How to secure your tiktok account

To exchange messages with anyone, you have to follow them, and they have to follow you back. The social media app considers these contacts your “friends”. So, spam or abusive messages from trolls that are abundant on other social media are limited by your contact list, which mitigates the risk since you handpick the people who can message you. On the other hand, you’re probably going to follow a lot of creators, so it doesn’t eliminate the risk of receiving dubious messages. However, what does eliminate the risk is disabling your direct messages completely. If you don’t want to go down that road you can also block users on a case-by-case basis; those will appear in your block list.

You can also decide whether users can duet with your videos, which means that they combine your videos with their own. You can choose between turning it off, allowing everyone to duet with you or limit it just to your friends.

As you browse TikTok, you will also see videos you might want to revisit later, so you like them. These will be collected in the liked videos section of your profile and you can allow everyone to see what you’ve liked or keep it private by toggling a switch in the privacy settings.

Moderating comments is also one of the options afforded to users. Again, you can turn it off completely, limit it to friends, or allow everyone to comment. The app also offers a filter, which will automatically filter spam and offensive comments when turned on, and you can fine-tune it further by adding specific keywords, which when mentioned, will automatically hide the comment.

Before and after uploading you can still edit some privacy options for individual videos such as allowing duets, comments, and making the video public or private.

In summary

This article should give you a pretty good idea of the privacy and security settings that TikTok offers. However, as with all social media, these settings tend to go through overhauls from time to time, especially since these platforms tend to be scrutinized about how they handle user privacy and data, so the best advice is to regularly audit your security and privacy settings. And while you’re at it, why not check up on your Facebook and Google accounts too?

TikTok is one of the most downloaded apps today. And almost everyone is using it that you can see these videos uploaded on other platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube.

However, not everyone is a fan of the said platform, especially US government agencies citing security risks. According to USA Today, the US Navy and the Transportation Security Administration has banned the use of the application for its workers, Senior Democrat Chuck Schumer says that “the TikTok app poses a potential national security risk.” The New York Times has also reported that U.S. Military block access to TikTok and strongly discouraged members of the armed forces from keeping TikTok on their personal electronic devices.

How to secure your tiktok account

While that is up for debate, regular people, like you and I, who use the platform can still do something to secure our TikTok accounts to keep hackers away or to enhance our privacy within the app. Here are tips on how you can make your TikTok safe and secure as possible.

Set up a verification code

How to secure your tiktok account

Most social media platforms use two-factor authentication to help secure user accounts. In the case of TikTok, it uses verification codes sent to your phone number. Here’s how to do it.

STEP 1: Launch the TikTok app
STEP 2: Open the “Me” tab in the bottom right
STEP 3: Next, tap the three vertical dots in the upper right
STEP 4: Tap the “Manage My Account” option
STEP 5: Add your phone number and email address

Whenever you log in to an account, instead of entering a password, you’ll need to input a verification code instead.

See Who’s Using Your TikTok Account

STEP 1: Launch the TikTok app
STEP 2: Open the “Me” tab in the bottom right
STEP 3: Next, tap the three vertical dots in the upper right
STEP 4: Tap “Manage My Account”
STEP 5: “Security”

From here you will see security alerts or warnings if there are any.

STEP 6: Select “Your Devices”

Now, you can explore all the devices that have logged-in to your TikTok account. If you don’t recognize any of those devices or you want to remove your old device, you can remove it from here. I suggest you checking this section from time to time, to be sure.

Make TikTok videos private

How to secure your tiktok account

Not all clips you make on TikTok are ready for publishing as you are probably saving it for later or you just want to consider it as part of your private collection (but remember, NEVER store sensitive videos here). Even if you are in a public account, TikTok you can still make the clip visible only to you or your friends only.

For a new video:

STEP 1: Before uploading, tap “Who can view this video”
STEP 2: Select Friends or Private

For the video that was already posted:

STEP 1: Open a video
STEP 2: Tap the three-dot icon at the bottom right
STEP 3: Select Privacy settings
STEP 4: Tap “Who can view this video”
STEP 5: Select Friends or Private

Make your TikTok account private

How to secure your tiktok account

Let’s say you’re not ready to be discovered on TikTok yet. Then the best way is to make your account private.

STEP 1: Launch the TikTok app
STEP 2: Open the “Me” tab in the bottom right
STEP 3: Next, tap the three vertical dots in the upper right
STEP 4: Tap “Privacy and Safety”
STEP 5: Tap “Private Account”, if your profile is in Pro Account, you need to switch to a personal account to make your profile private.
STEP 6: Turn off “Suggest your account to others”

Just change this setting once you’re ready to be famous. 😉

And that sums up our tips on how to keep your TikTok account as safe and private. Like with any other social platform, always be mindful of what you share online and always safeguard your privacy.

How to secure your tiktok account

As you continue making short videos of all kinds of genres and enjoying trending ones, you might want to give attention to the safety of your TikTok account. Whenever you engage on any social media platform, your account is exposed to many ‘bad’ people. These people may tap into your account and post inappropriate videos or send awful messages without your knowledge. Protecting your TikTok account can be done in a couple of ways. These ways help you to be the only person able to access and use your account. They are as follows:

  1. Disabling login information
  2. Adding a verification code
  3. Checking for hackers
  4. Making your account private
  5. Stopping account suggestion

Since TikTok is mostly used on an app (iOS and Android), I will share the protection ways in those platforms only.

How to secure your tiktok account

Disabling login information

Just like other platforms, your login details will be saved by TikTok. When anyone has your phone, they can just tap the app and get your account open, and you probably wouldn’t want that.

  1. After logging in, tap on the ‘Me’ button in the bottom-right corner. Your profile page will open.
  2. Tap on the three vertical dots on the top-right corner of the page. ‘Settings and privacy’ will appear.
  3. Under the ‘Account’ section, tap on the ‘Manage my account’ button. You will see that the ‘Save login info’ slider is active and in green color. Tap on the slider to turn this setting off.

While some devices may stop saving the login details, others may continue to do it. Anyway, this option is supposed to tell TikTok that whenever the app is open and whoever opens it, they will not find your profile active.

Adding a Verification Code

The verification code in TikTok is not as secure as the popular two-factor authentication but it can serve some good purpose:

  1. Following the first two steps of the previous section, get to ‘Manage my account’.
  2. Tap on ‘Phone Number’. Select your country code and add your number. Then, click ‘send code’.
  3. TikTok will then use auto-detection to pick the number they sent you in your local messaging app. If this doesn’t happen, copy and paste the number there. If this is successful, your number will be added.

You might be wondering how this is supposed to protect your account – simple: whenever you try to login with your number, a notification message is sent. Those who want to invade your privacy and have your number only won’t have any chance at all.

Checking for hackers

People who attempt to gain secret and unapproved access to your account can be closely monitored by the following steps:

  1. Get to ‘Manage my account’ and choose ‘Security’.
  2. Tap on the arrow next two ‘Your devices’. This page provides you a list of the devices that have been used to log in to your account.
  3. If you tap on the info button at the top-right corner, this will appear: ‘If you don’t recognize any of these devices, remove the device and change your password to protect your account’.
  4. Making your account private
  5. Get to ‘Setting and Privacy’ and choose ‘Privacy and safety’
  6. Tap on the slider next to ‘Private account’ to make it active.
  7. Stopping account suggestion

By default, your account is set to be suggested to the authors. If there is an intruder lurking in TikTok, this may well bring you to their attention.

How to secure your tiktok account

Have you heard of TikTok? Sure you have. It’s one of the fastest-growing video-hosting platforms in the world. TikTok has millions of active users across the globe, mostly teenagers and young adults. If you’re one of them, then you should ensure sure that your account is secure from hackers and other bad actors. I’ll explain how to make sure your TikTok account is safe from being hacked in this guide.

How to make sure your TikTok Account stays safe from hackers

You can log in to your TikTok account in several ways, whether it’s by using a password, social media accounts, or by using the verification code method. The problem is that as you might have noticed that TikTok doesn’t offer any options for two-step verification, which is a must-have for anyone who cares about security in my opinion.

The video platform’s existing verification code option acts as an alternative to a password instead of adding a second layer of security. So, if anyone manages to find your TikTok password, they could easily enter your profile and change the password locking you out of your profile.
Fortunately, there’s a small workaround to the two-step verification problem. Here’s how:

  1. Launch the TikTok app and go to the “Me” section.
  2. There you need to tap the three dots on the upper right corner and tap “Manage my account”.
  3. Enter your phone number and email ID to your account and verify them through OTPs on the next page.

That’s that. Whenever someone manages to log in to your account using your password, they will need the verification code sent to your mobile number or email to be able to change your password or anything else.

Even better, you can check who has access to your TikTok account by looking in the Security field under Manage my account. From there, you’ll be able to receive security alerts and devices on which your account is currently active. If you find an unknown device in the list, remove it immediately, and change your password.

You can simply navigate to the Settings section of the app inside your TikTok account and follow these tips to keep your account untouched.

With most of us sitting at homes and using social media apps to communicate and read news, there have been instances where hackers have tried to take benefit from it in one way or the other. And as a part of keeping your data as safe as possible, it is important to keep your social handles secure. TikTok is one of the popular social media apps out there with millions of users and someone invading your privacy on that app is something that you wouldn’t want to see. So, Information Security Awareness or ISEA by MeitY has given eight tips that you can follow in order to keep your TikTok account safe.

You can simply navigate to the Settings section of the app inside your TikTok account and follow these tips to keep your account untouched.

-In the privacy and safety section you can toggle on the ‘Private Account’ option only if you don’t want it to be discovered by random users on the platform.

-Switch off the option to let anyone download your videos on to their own devices as the video can be used in any way.

-Limiting who can comment on your videos is also important as we see many becoming a part of cyber bullying every other day.

— Information Security Awareness (ISEA) by MeitY (@InfoSecAwa) May 5, 2020

-In case you are allowing others or friends to comment, make sure you can filter them so no one can abuse or violate the TikTok guidelines.

-You can also limit the ‘Slitch or Duet’ permission of your video to friends only if in case you are concerned about privacy and your content being exposed to everyone on TikTok.

-Similar to limiting the comments on videos, one can also limit who can react to your videos on TikTok.

-ISEA also suggests that parents will have to take special interest in the apps that are popular with kids and are likely to expose their data to others.

-And lastly, in case the user is still being harassed on the TikTok app, he or she can simply visit the profile of the user and block him or her or report their account.

  • TikTok launches second in-app quiz in India providing account safety tips to users
  • First TikTok quiz on online safety was taken by almost 5 million users

April 30, 2019 – As it fosters a global community that thrives on creativity and expression, TikTok, the world’s leading short video platform, launches its second safety in-app quiz in India to equip users with online safety tips. TikTok users are also coming together to show their support and further enhance awareness around online safety and safety in general.

As a platform that celebrates trends and embraces diversity, TikTok has become the preferred platform for expression, given its lowered boundaries for sharing, creating, discovering — all made easy on mobile. TikTok is committed to helping make its millions of users feel safe and comfortable within the community, which is why it is continuously enhancing and updating its policies, tools, and resources to promote a positive and safe app environment.

The account safety quiz which is available on TikTok in India and throughout Europe,EMEA, and Asia incorporates questions that highlight a few of the most important ideas on general account safety including:

  • Setting up your account with a strong password
  • Not sharing your account information with anyone
  • Being aware of phishing, suspicious email or website

Earlier this year, in celebration of Safer Internet Day on 5 February, TikTok launched a global campaign, #BetterMeBetterInternet, to reinforce its commitment to online safety as a trusted short-video platform. As a part of this initiative, in India, TikTok launched the #SafeHumSafeInternet campaign, which also featured the first ever safety quiz. The quiz saw much success and was taken by almost 5 million TikTok users who were interested in knowing their safety IQ, this also reinforces people’s keen interest in knowing more about online safety and security.

In addition to educational efforts, TikTok is launching new tools and initiatives to support the creation of a positive and safe in-app environment. In March, TikTok launched the localized Safety Center in India, which is dedicated to providing tips and resources to help users navigate a range of topics and build an online experience that feels safe and welcoming. The Safety Center is available in ten Indian major languages and also featured an Anti-Bullying resource page. Moreover, this year, TikTok launched a number of features – the comment filter to automatically filter out any comment that contains up to 30 pre-identified keywords by users in English and Hindi and two new Digital Wellbeing features, Screen Time Management and Restricted Mode. Screen Time Management lets users decide how much time they want to spend on TikTok, while Restricted Mode limits the appearance of content that may not be appropriate for all audiences. The app will also introduce new upcoming features including:

  • Device Management: which will allow users to manage their login devices to prevent their accounts from being hacked
  • Revamped notification tab and notification controls, which will make users’ digital lives easier

TikTok is available in 150 global markets via the App Store or Google Play stores.

If you are a parent, you might be interested in what kinds of parental control tools TikTok has to offer, which we will cover in an article next week.

Having a safe and enjoyable experience on TikTok starts with account security. Here are a few tips to protect your account.

Choose a Strong Password

We highly recommend using a strong password with:

  • At least 6 characters
  • A combination of upper case letters, numbers, and symbols

We also suggest changing your password regularly—it can help to use a password manager to keep track of them!

Keep track of your devices

TikTok offers the ability to secure your account with two-factor authentication, so additional verification is required each time you log in.
You can also use Device Management to view all devices logged into your account, remove your login from devices, and get notified if there is suspicious activity on your account.
Under ” Manage devices “, you’ll see the devices that you’ve logged into and the relevant date, time, and location. To log out of TikTok on any of those devices, select the device and tap ” Remove “.
To view this function:

  1. Go to ” Privacy and safety
  1. Tap ” Manage my account
  1. Tap ” Security
  1. Tap ” Your Devices ” to manage your logged devices

Beware of suspicious links and messages

Remember: don’t click on suspicious links or messages as they could be scams or phishing attempts. If you happen to come across the following, file a report:

  • Messages claiming you have won a prize, discount, free trial, or reward that requires your personal information.
  • Strangers or people you know claiming they are in an emergency and asking for money or other help.
  • Requests to follow someone else’s social media account.
  • Questionable links or content.
  • QR codes appearing in someone’s profile or a video.

Remember, TikTok will never message you to ask for your account password, bank card, or any other personal information.
