How to see if a flight offers wi-fi and power outlets

Some flights offer Wi-FI, and some flights don’t. Some airplanes include dedicated power outlets for every seat, while others only offer them in certain seats. But you can check before you get on the plane — or even before you book tickets.

Check ahead of time and you’ll know just how much Internet access you’ll have, and whether you can easily charge your portable electronics and laptop. This information can even help you decide which seat to pick.

When Booking Tickets

When purchasing airline tickets, you’ll usually find this information listed on airfare comparison websites. For example, search TripAdvisor for tickets and you’ll see “Wi-Fi” or “Power” listed under specific tickets if the airplane offers these features. Other sites and even airline-specific booking sites often list these features in a similar way, if you’re looking closely.

Be sure to look deeper and check the connections here. You may only have Wi-FI or power outlets on specific flights if you’re taking a trip with more than one flight.

But it’s not always that simple — just because an airplane offers “power” doesn’t mean you’ll be able to plug your laptop in at your seat. Those outlets may only be at specific seats, or some seats may only have access to USB power outlets. Depending on the flight, you may have to share an outlet or two with other other people who may or may not want to use them.

Ticket comparison sites generally offer this information, and individual airline booking sites should, too. If the website your’e booking tickets on doesn’t offer it, switch to a different website. For example, HipMunk displays flights with Wi-Fi with a Wi-Fi icon. In the screenshot below, it seems US Airways does offer Wi-Fi on both flights on this route, whereas United doesn’t.

Check a Specific Flight

If you already have a flight planned, you can check information about those flights. You could attempt to look at an individual airline’s website or your booking confirmation email for this information, but you won’t necessarily find it the information you want.

Instead, try using SeatGuru, which is a sort of database of airlines, flights, and individual aircraft. As long as you know the airline and flight number you’ll be taking, you can plug it in here. Under Amenities at the right, you can see whether the flight has Wi-Fi and view information about it, including how much it will cost you to use.

SeatGuru also provides you with a visual map, so you can see exactly where power outlets are located on a specific flight. You could also check SeatGuru when you’re reserving seats to ensure you pick seats with available power outlets.

Power outlet availability varies. If your flight offers power outlets, you may have an outlet dedicated to your seat alone, or you may have to share one or two outlets with the people sitting next to you. You may have a full-size AC power outlet that you can plug a laptop into, or you may only have USB power outlets you can connect phones and tablets to. Often, you may have both. If you just want power for your phone or tablet, consider bringing an external battery pack so you can recharge that phone, tablet, or any other device that charges via USB on the flight. If your flight does offer power, you could take the opportunity to recharge that external battery during your trip.

If you’re booking flights and really want to get a flight with Wi-Fi or power, be sure to use a site that displays this information. You could also look at the specific flight numbers and plug them into SeatGuru to see information about that specific flight.

Just because a flight should offer these features doesn’t mean it will. The Wi-Fi could be done and non-functional when you get on the plane, or you could potentially be put on a different plane without those power outlets. Bear that in mind if you’re considering paying a extra for these features on your next trip.

If your flight offers power outlets, you may have a dedicated outlet for your one seat only, or you may need to share one or two outlets with those seated next to you. You may have a full-size AC outlet that you can plug a laptop into, or you may only have USB power outlets that you can connect phones and tablets to. Often you can have both. If you just want to power your phone or tablet, consider bringing an external battery so you can charge that phone, tablet, or any device that charges via USB during the flight. If your flight provides electricity, you could take the opportunity to recharge this external battery during your trip.

Airlines are fitting Wi-Fi, power outlets, or BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) video- streaming systems into more and more of their planes, and we’ll soon expect rather than hope to connect to the internet or use our devices to stream entertainment as we hurtle 30,000 feet in the air at 600 mph.

Until every flight has Wi-Fi, however, these terrestrial search tips will help you find out which flights have the amenities you want.

Two sites in particular can help you find out what kind of amenities are featured in pretty much every flight in the world.

Routehappy is particularly useful for telling you what kind of onboard entertainment you can expect on a flight. For example, you can see which flights specifically have paid or free live TV, on-demand video, personal-device video streaming, or all/none of the above.

Like some travel sites, Routehappy also shows you which flights have Wi-Fi. But Routehappy goes a little bit further by showing you the quality of Wi-Fi on a particular flight.

You can also find out whether flights have power outlets to charge your devices if your mile-high web surfing drains your device’s battery. Many airlines reserve the outlets for premium or first-class passengers, however, and Routehappy will not tell you whether the outlets are also available in economy class.

That’s when SeatGuru comes in.

SeatGuru gives you simpler information about a flight’s amenities than Routehappy, but it shows you exactly which seats have the power outlets.

In a flight’s details section, you will see a link with the aircraft model that will fly the route, as shown in the screenshot below. Click it to open a seating map that will show you which seats have power outlets.

The tiny gray dot on each seat is the symbol representing power outlets. For this particular flight, power outlets are available for every seat.

SeatGuru also offers a bunch of useful non-tech information, such as which seats have the most legroom and which are least favorable because of their proximity to bathrooms.

You can book flights from either of these websites.

Even if you discover that the cheapest flight with the best timing doesn’t have any of the amenities you’re looking for and you’re not willing to pay more for a flight that does, knowing ahead could still let you prepare and arrange some entertainment such as movies or TV to watch on a smartphone, tablet, or laptop.

Your phone running out of batteries is an inevitable part of life, but for some reason, it seems to be especially inevitable when you’re already mid-flight. The good news is that more and more airlines are offering power outlets. The bad news is that they’re definitely not universal (yet), and even if your flight technically “has” them, there’s no guarantee they’re going to work.

All that aside, it’s totally possible to plan ahead (at least a little bit) and figure out if your upcoming flight has individual power outlets. It’s also worth noting that some airlines have moved beyond traditional power outlets and opted to provide USB ports instead. Either way, here’s how to find out which planes have some extra juice to give.

Volunteer Your Seat (and Get Paid For It) Using American Airlines App

If you’re flying American Airlines now it might pay to check in to your flight early—literally.

Of course, to avoid this problem, you should always charge up your gadgets before you leave. If you use them in the airport, try to grab an outlet to stay charged— bringing a power strip with you will help a lot (and make you some friends along the way). A good external battery pack can go a long way, too. However, if you need an outlet, many airlines offer options, so just like we did with wifi , let’s take a look at some of the most popular US airlines and what they offer.

Which airlines offer power outlets, and where

If you want to get an idea of which airlines offer power outlets before you start booking, here’s a list of the most popular US airlines with some details. We’re looking specifically at economy sections here, as first- and business-classes are more likely to have power options.

  • Air Canada : Most, if not all, Air Canada aircrafts have power outlets as well as a USB port for charging smaller gadgets. You can take a virtual tour of the cabins of different flights to find out if yours is on the list.
  • Alaska Air : Alaska Air sets the bar high, with individual power outlets and USB ports on each seat on the plane.
  • American Airlines : American has power outlets on most of their planes, but like Delta, you need to check the individual aircraft to find out where they’re located. (i.e. in economy class, they may only be located in exit rows).
  • JetBlue : JetBlue provides power outlets and USB ports on some, but not all of their planes. For example, their newly refurbished A321 planes do have outlets, while A320 series and the E-190 series currently do not have individual outlets, according to Upgraded Points .
  • Southwest : There are no power outlets on Southwest flights, according to their website .
  • United Airlines : All international flights have power outlets for every seat on the plane. It’s not as consistent on domestic flights, so be sure to check out the specifications of your individual aircraft.
  • Virgin Atlantic : All Virgin Atlantic flights provide USB ports to passengers in all cabins. Some planes also offer traditional power outlets to passengers not sitting in economy.

Of course, this isn’t an exhaustive list, and includes the most up-to-date information that we could find. Airlines are constantly improving their services, so this may change. If you have any corrections (with a source to back it up), let us know and we’ll tweak the list!

While American Airlines has the largest fleet of aircraft in the world, it also has one of the most inconsistent. Thanks to the airline taking delivery of new aircraft and getting a large chunk of jets came from its merger with US Airways , many plane types don’t share the same interiors or number of seats.

For instance, American has four types of A321s in its fleet. Some offer power outlets, seatback entertainment screens and lie-flat seats, some offer only power outlets and seatback screens, some offer only power outlets and some don’t offer any of those amenities.

American has been working to harmonize its domestic fleet with its Project Oasis and Project Oasis 2.0 (internally known as Project Kodiak) retrofits, and has already installed lie-flat and true premium economy seats across its widebody fleet, but it’s still going to be a few years until passengers can expect a more consistent cabin experience, and any completion timelines previously announced may be further delayed due to 737 MAX and coronavirus-related groundings.

Fortunately, American is making it easier to tell what aircraft type you’ll get when booking flights. While you previously had to look at the row numbering to see what type of plane you’ll be on, the airline’s website now takes the guesswork out by showing icons for all of the amenities that will be available on your flight. There are icons for Wi-Fi (standard or high-speed satellite-based Wi-Fi), in-seat power outlets, USB ports, seatback entertainment screens, personal device streaming, live TV and Apple Music. Previously, the website only had icons for Wi-Fi and in-seat power.

“We are testing new icons on aa.com to provide customers with amenity information for their individual flight prior to booking. It is part of our continuing efforts to provide a worry-free travel experience to our customers,” an American Airlines spokesperson told TPG.

This new feature is available on all routes, including some operated by partners. The icons aren’t available yet on AA’s mobile app or on the “flight status” page of the website.

The idea of detailing what amenities will be offered on a flight at time of booking isn’t entirely new. Delta’s website has shown icons for various amenities for years. Although not always entirely accurate, some third-party websites like Google Flights also already show flight amenity information, including for American Airlines flights.

As upsetting as it might be for passengers that AA is removing seatback entertainment and reducing legroom on some aircraft, this new feature is certainly a welcome addition. Just remember that the airline could swap aircraft at any time so amenities listed are never guaranteed. To be notified of aircraft changes, you could set an alert using a service like ExpertFlyer (which is owned by TPG’s parent company, Red Ventures).

Power up your devices on the go

Keep your portable electronic devices running with the USB socket available in every seat.

Many of our seats also feature 110V AC sockets to power bigger devices like laptops. The socket is a universal receptacle that accepts the following types of plugs:

US – Two blades, with or without extra ground pin

EU – Two cylindrical prong plug

UK – Three pin plug

Please disconnect your devices when you’re not using them.

What devices can I use during the flight?

Using electronic devices onboard

You can use electronic devices including mobile phones, tablets, eReaders and music players throughout the flight. Please switch them to flight safe mode when the aircraft door closes for departure. If your device has no flight safe mode, please keep it switched off throughout the flight, for safety reasons.

If you’re using a laptop, you’ll need to switch it off and put it away for taxi, take off and landing.

Bluetooth headphones can be used with your own devices during the flight, you’ll just need to switch them off during take off and landing. And if you are using your headphones, make sure you still listen to the safety briefing before take off.

We offer movies, live and on-demand TV 1 , texting through iMessage and WhatsApp, and music through iHeartRadio 2 —all for free in our Inflight Entertainment Portal, right on your personal device! There are no app downloads or signups required to use the Portal. You can also purchase Internet for $8 all day, per device. 3

Keep the conversation going while onboard using iMessage and WhatsApp. Launch the Inflight Entertainment Portal in your browser, accept the texting terms and conditions, and then continue texting in your native app like you normally do.

Inflight Mobile SMS and Data Roaming Service

Your phone will automatically connect to the AeroMobile network after disabling Airplane Mode. You can start to use the service after receiving a welcome text message from AeroMobile.

With our in-seat power outlets that adapt to all kinds of electrical plugs, business travelers can work efficiently on their laptops throughout the flight. AC outlets are available in all our Royal Laurel Class, Premium Laurel Class, and Premium Economy Class seats, as well as in the Economy Class of 787, 777-300ER, and A330-300 aircraft. Seats have built-in 110V, maximum output power is 100W.

The USB ports of 787, 777-300ER, and A330-300 aircraft are for power charging only.

Onboard the aircraft

Will there be food and beverages served on my flight?

Porter serves complimentary premium snacks in-flight, along with beer, wine, soft drinks, coffee and tea.

Do I have to pay for beer and wine?

No. Our inflight service is complimentary during your flight.

What is the minimum drinking age on board a Porter flight?

Cabin crew must not serve alcohol to anyone less than 19 years of age in accordance with Canadian Aviation Regulations and provincial laws. However, cabin crew also has the right to refuse to serve alcohol to any passenger, regardless of age, based on their discretion. Any alcohol served on Porter flight must be consumed on board the aircraft.

As per aviation safety regulations, passengers are prohibited from consuming duty free alcohol they bring on board. You can only drink alcohol offered as part of the inflight service.

Is there a drinking limit?

Under Canadian Aviation Regulations (602.04), cabin crew is expected to stop serving alcohol to a passenger who appears to be intoxicated. Porter flight attendants take several factors into consideration when serving alcohol to passengers, including the number of alcoholic beverages consumed and the passenger’s behaviour.

Our passengers’ wellbeing and safety is our top priority, and in addition to providing great customer service it is the cabin crew’s’ responsibility to ensure impaired passengers do not interfere with safety of the flight or other passengers on board the aircraft.

If I bring my own food, is there somewhere I can refrigerate it on the aircraft?

Unfortunately, our aircraft are not equipped with refrigerators. To read more about travelling with food, please review our Special Items section.

Does Porter offer in-flight entertainment?

No. Porter is a short-haul carrier and our aircraft are not equipped with an in-flight entertainment system.

Are electrical power outlets available onboard?

No, power outlets are not available onboard, however charging stations are available before you board your flight at all airports Porter services.

Does Porter offer in-flight Wi-Fi?

Porter does not offer Wi-Fi onboard our aircraft at this time.

How many restrooms are on the aircraft? And where are they located?

Our aircraft are equipped with one lavatory located at the front of the aircraft.

Is there a diaper changing table onboard?

Lavatories on board a Dash 8-400 are too small to accommodate a diaper changing table, however, the restrooms in our Porter lounges and airports are all equipped with changing tables for you to use before boarding the aircraft.

What do I have to bear in mind if I have an allergy to nuts?

With 48 hours’ notice, we will remove nut products from our inflight service menu and assign seating in a nut-free buffer zone where passengers are requested not to consume any nut products.

You can request this special service when booking on flyporter.com or through the Porter Call Centre at 1 888-619-8622. Despite our best efforts, nut product residue may continue to be present in the cabin. Other onboard food items may contain trace elements of nuts and other passengers may bring aboard food items containing nut products or residue.

For this reason, passengers with a nut allergy are strongly encouraged to take all necessary medical precautions to prepare for the possibility of exposure.

Do I have to keep my seatbelt on for the duration of the flight?

Turbulence may occur at any time during the flight. For your own safety, you are required to keep your seatbelt on for takeoff and landing, and whenever the seatbelt sign is illuminated. It is always recommended to keep your seatbelt fastened while seated.

May I smoke e-cigarettes on board?

Smoking on board is strictly prohibited for safety reasons. This includes e-cigarettes.

Can I pay to arrange delivery of champagne, cake or a gift to someone on board a Porter flight for their birthday or special celebration?

We don’t currently offer an option to arrange for pre-paid delivery of a special treat that can be presented to a passenger on board one of our flights.

Additionally, due to security regulations, our airport teams aren’t able to accept delivery of gifts to be presented to a passenger when they check in or board a flight.

Each person is limited to a maximum of 15 portable electronic devices, such as cameras, mobile phones, laptops, tablets, etc. To find out what is and isn’t allowed on the aircraft, whether you use it or not, see carry-on baggage prohibited and restricted items.

At the airport

Portable electronic devices may be used inside the terminal building and enclosed walkways, such as airbridges. Most airports provide wifi and charging stations; check their websites for details.

Security screening usually requires laptops to be removed from bags and screened separately. X-ray screening does not damage electronic equipment.

If you’re walking across the tarmac, your devices may remain powered on but must not be used. It’s a potentially hazardous area and we need your full attention.

In security controlled areas, such as customs and immigration, some airports prohibit the use of devices, including mobiles and cameras. You can have devices turned on; just resist the temptation to use them.

On the plane

Lightweight handheld electronic devices may be used at any time. Ensure these are switched to flight mode as wifi and cellular must be turned off until advised after landing. You are allowed to use Bluetooth, so after selecting flight mode turn Bluetooth on.

Wearables and implants – hearing aid, pacemaker, watch, tracker

These devices can be used at any time on all our aircraft, provided cellular and wifi transmitting capability is switched off. Bluetooth functionality is permitted:

  • Hearing aids
  • Pacemakers
  • Electric watches
  • Smart watches
  • Activity trackers
  • Electronic jewellery

Electronic cigarettes and pipes

Although you are allowed to carry these onto our aircraft, you are not allowed to use or charge them at any time. They can only be carried in the cabin, and not as checked-in baggage:

  • E-cigarettes
  • E-cigars
  • E-pipes
  • E-vapours

Light handhelds – mobile phone, tablet, iPod, ebook

This section is about lightweight/handheld devices weighing up to 1kg, and able to be held and operated with one hand. Cellular or wifi transmitting capability, must be switched off or set to flight mode for the entire flight. You are allowed to use Bluetooth, so after selecting flight mode turn Bluetooth on.

Unless the crew instruct otherwise, lightweight, handheld devices can be used on all Air New Zealand jet and turbo-prop fleets at any time.

Light handhelds include:

  • Mobile phones and smartphones
  • Tablets and iPads
  • Audio players – CD, MP3, iPod
  • Electronic books
  • Cameras
  • Handheld games and toys without remote control
  • Personal digital assistants (PDAs)

Note: The Samsung Galaxy Note 7 is not to be carried, either on your person, in carry-on or checked-in luggage on board any Air New Zealand aircraft.

Larger portables – laptop, DVD player, video camera

This section refers to portable electronic devices that weigh more than 1kg and/or can’t be held and operated in one hand (large devices).

Cellular or wifi transmitting capability must be switched off or set to flight mode for the entire flight. You are allowed to use Bluetooth, so after selecting flight mode turn Bluetooth on.

Unless the crew instruct otherwise, large portable devices, or those which can’t be held and operated in one hand can be used after take-off and before landing on all our aircraft, otherwise they must be safely stowed.

Examples of larger portable devices include:

  • Laptop and notebook computers
  • Portable CD and DVD players
  • Electronic games and toys without remote control
  • Video recorders and cameras
  • Handheld calculators with printers

Bluetooth or wireless accessories – headphones, mouse, keyboard, controller

Accessories that require a Bluetooth connection can be used on our aircraft. If the device is lightweight and handheld it can be used at all times. Otherwise if it is a large device, or designed for use with a large device, it can only be used after takeoff and before landing.

Cellular or wifi transmitting capability cannot be used during flight, unless advised by crew after landing.

Drone carriage

An Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV), commonly known as a “drone”, is viewed as a portable electronic device.

Drones may be carried as either checked-in or cabin baggage on Air New Zealand services provided the requirements for accepting cabin baggage or checked-in baggage are met. If the batteries cannot be removed from the drone it must be packed so it cannot be activated accidentally, and the batteries that power the drone must comply with Air New Zealand acceptance. You cannot use devices that need to plug into an aircraft service electrical outlet. The only exception is MEDA approved equipment, see medical equipment.

In-seat power for computers

In-seat outlets providing 110V at 60Hz are available in:

  • Business Premier and Premium Economy on B777-300 and B787-9 aircraft
  • Economy on B777-300 and B787-9 aircraft

All outlets accept these plugs:

  • 3-pin New Zealand or Australian
  • 2-pin European
  • 2-pin or 3-pin USA

British 3-pin plugs require a travel adaptor for all outlets except on our B777-300 aircraft. We only carry a limited supply of these, so it’s a good idea to bring your own.

Grooming and comfort – shaver, toothbrush, noise cancelling headphones

These devices can be used at any time on all our aircraft, apart from headsets during safety announcements:

  • Electric shaver
  • Electric toothbrush
  • Noise cancelling headsets issued by Air New Zealand
  • Other Bluetooth noise cancelling headsets

Radio, television, VHF and GPS

These devices cannot be used. They must be switched off and prevented from accidentally activating during the entire flight:

  • Satellite receivers, such as Sirius XM Radio
  • TV sets
  • AM/FM radio receivers
  • VHF scanner receivers
  • Radio transmitters, such as CB, ham radio
  • GPS systems

CONVENTIONAL wisdom says that too few people will pay to use Wi-Fi services when they fly and that the fledgling industry is, therefore, not likely to succeed.

After all, travelers in general hate being nickel-and-dimed by hotels for Wi-Fi service, which is readily available free elsewhere. And most airplanes do not have power outlets, which means that Wi-Fi use on a plane is now generally limited by battery life

Despite those hurdles, domestic airlines have been lining up to wire planes for Wi-Fi service. Just a year after it outfitted its first airplane for American Airlines, Aircell has installed its land-based Gogo Wi-Fi service on 526 aircraft for various airlines. Aircell executives told me that installation costs about $100,000 a plane.

An up-and-coming competitor, Row44, recently signed a deal with Southwest Airlines to install its satellite-based system in all of Southwest’s fleet of about 540 Boeing 737s. John Guidon, the chief executive of Row44, wouldn’t say exactly how much it costs to install, except to concede that it is “quite a lot more” than $100,000 a plane.

So the bets have been placed. Every major airline except Continental, which has been coy about its plans for possible Wi-Fi or for installing satellite television on its planes, has announced plans to install Wi-Fi. And smaller competitors like AirTran and Virgin America already have their fleets wired.

But for all the airlines’ spending, there is still not a lot of evidence that the move will pay off through what the industry calls the “take rate,” the percentage of passengers who opt to pay up to $12.95 for a connection. The take rate is now believed to be well below 10 percent on average, though Virgin America has said that it is seeing over 20 percent on some of its flights between California and the East Coast.

But a survey being released Tuesday seems to challenge some of those conventional assumptions. It was commissioned by the Wi-Fi Alliance, a trade group representing companies in the industry and conducted by Wakefield Research. The survey polled 480 frequent business travelers, including 150 who have used in-flight Wi-Fi, from Aug. 11 to Aug. 18.

About three quarters (76 percent) said they would choose an airline based on Wi-Fi availability. More than half (55 percent) said they would shift a flight by one day to get on a plane with a Wi-Fi connection. The survey has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.47 percentage points.

Domestic and European flights (high speed WiFi)

SAS’ European fleet is equipped with high speed WiFi, you can easely stream your favorite series, surf, email or use social media.

Payment is done by credit card or with EuroBonus points. Travelers in SAS Business and SAS Plus, as well as EuroBonus Diamond and Gold members, can enjoy free WiFi access.

WiFi is in most cases activated when we leave the gate and turned off when we arrive at our destination. However, some areas and countries do not permit WiFi transmissions and the system automatically discontinues the service over such areas. If so, WiFi will be available once in the air.

Flights to/from Asia and the US (1st. generation WiFi)

SAS flights to the US and Asia are equipped with a lower speed WiFi. You will be able to read your email, use social media and surf, but the system is not strong enough for streaming.

Payment is done by credit card or with EuroBonus points. Travelers in SAS Business and SAS Plus, as well as EuroBonus Diamond and Gold members, get WiFi access for free.

The service will be activated around 20 minutes after takeoff and will be de-activated when we start our descent. There will be some outages along the route when the system changes from one satellite to another, and on very northern flights over Greenland.

One of our 16 aircrafts is still waiting to be equipped, the rest of SAS intercontinental fleet has WiFi. The aircraft affected is A330E with registration SE-REH.

3G mobile network (US/Asia)

On flights to the US and Asia you can use the AeroMobile roaming network by disabling flight mode, but only when the aircraft is at cruising level.

Our 3G mobile network is enabled on most of our flights to/from US/Asia. This service lets you use your smartphone as if you were at home – from 20 000 feet. Just make sure that your provider is partnered with AeroMobile.

The cost for mobile services (text messaging, phone calls and GPRS) is based on the roaming charges of your service provider. All data roaming is international, even on domestic flights, and the costs are added to your regular phone bill. When you turn off flight mode your service provider will send you a text with your pricing scheme for this service.

Cyber Security

Mobility and international information transfer via Internet call for wireless LAN and a power supply. Nowhere is this more important than at an airport. Vienna Airport therefore offers passengers free wireless Internet access in all areas, including restaurants. A notebook equipped with a WiFi compatible Wireless Lan card or a smartphone is required. Your device does not have to be specially configured.

In times of increased job mobility, airports frequently become a second workplace. In particular, business travellers are given the opportunity to conduct their daily business at Vienna Airport with functional solutions. Check your connecting device:

Make sure it is within 15 feet of the hotspot.

Try connecting a different computer or T-Mobile device to the hotspot. We can’t support game systems, TVs, or non T-Mobile phones or tablets.

Check that all timeout, power saving, or hibernate features are off.

Test to see if it can successfully connect to other Wi-Fi networks. If not, the problem is not with the hotspot.

Try accessing a different website or app. If they work are expected, the hotspot is not the problem.

Close or disable any programs running in the background and clear the browser cache & history.

Make sure it’s connected to the right Wi-Fi network.

Smartphone Mobile Hotspot (SMHS)

Supported T-Mobile phones and tablets that use your T-Mobile network as Wi-Fi for other devices.

  • Check the the T-Mobile app to verify that you haven’t exceeded the high-speed data amount included in your plan.
  • If your phone can load a web page the T-Mobile data works. Contact the other device manufacturer.

Mobile Hotspot equipment

T-Mobile standalone Mobile Hotspot devices, not your phone, that provide a Wi-Fi connection for other devices.

  • Mobile Hotspot devices only support using WPS security.
  • The connecting device must have a b/g Wi-Fi radio.
  • If the Hotspot is plugged into a USB port, disconnect it.
  • If you need help with doing any step on the device, visit visit our Device tutorials.

Once you’ve checked all of the above:

  1. Make sure you’re in T-Mobile coverage and have at least 2 bars of signal in your area. If you’re roaming, check out our Data Passes.
  2. Verify that the Mobile Hotspot or Smartphone Mobile Hotspot feature is turned on.
  3. Check that the connecting device Wi-Fi is turned on.
  4. Update to latest firmware version for all devices.
  5. Restart the Hotspot device or phone.
  6. Restart the devices you are trying to connect to the Hotspot.
  7. Delete the Wi-Fi profile on the connecting device and re-add it.

Best smart plug overall: TP-Link Kasa Smart WiFi Plug Mini

TP-Link’s Kasa line of smart home products includes this space-saving smart plug. This smart device works with Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa via your Wi-Fi network, and the Kasa app (Android and iOS) offers plenty of detailed options for customizing scheduling, away modes and timers.

What you won’t get? This WiFi smart plug doesn’t offer energy consumption data, a USB port or HomeKit compatibility. Still, if you’re interested in scheduling and using voice control and voice commands, TP-Link’s smart plug is a great choice to control a light switch or other connected device.

Best budget pick: Wyze Plug

At just $15 for a two-pack, the Wyze Plug packs a punch, turning your home appliances into smart devices such as a smart light or a smart thermostat. We tested it at the CNET Smart Home, and the setup was straightforward.The Wyze Plug works with Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa and comes with a physical on and off switch on the side of the plug. There’s no USB port on the side for additional charging.

Voice commands in our testing worked well, and the plug’s size and design keep it from interfering with other outlets. There was noticeable lag powering devices on with the Wyze app, but your results may vary depending on your Wi-Fi strength.

Best for HomeKit: WeMo Wi-Fi Smart Plug

The WeMo Wi-Fi Smart Plug is affordable and comes with native Google Assistant, Alexa and yes, HomeKit compatibility.

The WeMo app isn’t our favorite app, and you won’t get energy monitoring with the WeMo Wi-Fi Smart Plug. Those shortfalls aside, this smart plug’s space-saving design and solid HomeKit compatibility make it easy to recommend to users in Apple’s ecosystem.

Best for outdoors: iDevices Outdoor Switch

The iDevices Outdoor Switch is a great way to automate outdoor lights, fans, lamps, switches or other patio electronics. This outdoor smart switch works with Google Assistant, Alexa and HomeKit via your Wi-Fi connection and includes energy tracking and remote control.

While you will get two outlets with this outdoor plug, you can’t control them individually. If that’s a must-have for you, we’d recommend checking out TP-Link Kasa Outdoor Smart Plug, which works with Google and Alexa and has a great companion app.

Other models we tested

There are dozens of smart plugs out there from companies large and small, and while we haven’t tested every single one, we’ve seen quite a few come through the CNET Smart Home. Here’s a quick look at other notable options.

  • Amazon Smart Plug : A flagship for the brand, the Amazon smart plug costs $25 and only works with Amazon Alexa. While setup is easy, it isn’t as feature-rich as other models, which may be a deal breaker when you’re looking for a smart outlet.
  • Satechi Dual Smart Outlet : This HomeKit friendly smart plug costs $60, and you will get two outlets and energy monitoring capability. There isn’t any compatibility with Google Assistant and or Amazon Alexa, which won’t be tenable if you’re all in on your Alexa app.
  • iHome Outdoor : This $80 outdoor smart plug works with all three voice assistants, but you’ll only get one outlet.
  • ConnectSense Smart Outlet 2 : This $60 behemoth does it all — energy monitoring, individually controlled outlets, a USB port and LED status lighting. However, the price and unattractive, oversized design are enough to keep me from recommending it. Everyone loves a smart outlet, but no one likes an ugly one.
  • Koogeek : This $32 smart plug works well with HomeKit, but blocks adjacent outlets. Alexa or Google Assistant integrations aren’t as smooth as we’d like to see in our connected devices.
  • Puregear Pureswitch : This HomeKit-centered smart plug is another solid choice for Apple smart homes, but it didn’t perform as well in our testing as other HomeKit compatible devices.
  • Eufy smart plug mini : This pint-size smart plug is just slightly larger than our SmartThings budget pick above and costs just a few dollars more at $21. You’ll get Amazon and Google Assistant smarts, as well.

Things to remember

Choosing the best smart plug for you begins with voice assistant compatibility. Choose a plug that works with whichever voice assistant you’re using, whether it’s a smart phone, a tablet or other device. You can usually find this information on the product box, website or in your voice assistant’s mobile app.

Next, consider where your plug will be placed and whether blocking other adjacent outlets is a concern. If so, be sure to pick a plug that isn’t too large. Most models described as “mini” will be space-saving.

What to Know

  • Bringing a portable battery or connecting your charger directly to a provided power outlet is the best way to charge devices on a plane.

Use a Portable Charger

A portable charger is a charger that you take with you. Charge it at the airport before the flight or at home before you leave. Most portable chargers provide enough power to run devices a few times.

For a tablet, phone, e-book reader, or another device that charges over USB, a USB battery is all you need. Some have multiple USB ports to charge more than one device at the same time.

To charge a laptop on the plane, bring a portable laptop battery charger. Not only do laptops require more power than battery chargers for phones, but you also need a way to plug the laptop into the charger. A portable laptop charger has the two-pronged or three-pronged connection needed to mimic a wall outlet.

It’s best to charge a laptop battery charger overnight because it holds a huge amount of power. While waiting in the airport for your flight, plug in the battery charger to top off the charge.

Plug In on the Plane

Some planes offer in-seat power that works with a standard AC power adapter, such as how a laptop plugs into the wall at home. For these types of aircraft, bring along the standard power brick you use with a wall outlet. You can get one on Amazon if yours is missing or broken.

In some cases, DC power adapters are used in planes, like the circular cigarette lighter power adapters found in vehicles. If that’s what’s available, you’ll need a DC-to-AC power converter.
