How to set a default web browser in windows

On Windows 10, changing your default browser is easy: Just a few clicks. On Windows 11, you have to make a few more changes in Settings. Here’s how to do it.

Microsoft hasn’t been shy about promoting the use of its Edge browser in Windows 11. By default, Edge will open whenever you click a web link or open an HTML file. Luckily, you can change that in Settings—even though Microsoft makes the process non-obvious and more difficult than you might expect.

To get started, open the Settings app. You can do this quickly by pressing Windows+i on your keyboard. Or you can open Start, search “Settings,” and click the Settings app icon.

In Settings, click “Apps” in the sidebar, then select “Default Apps” in the list.

In the search box below “Set defaults for applications,” type the name of the browser you’d like to make the default browser in Windows 11 (for example, “Firefox” or “Chrome.”) Then, click its name in the results below.

On the browser’s “Default Apps” settings page, you’ll see a list of file extensions (such as .HTM, .HTML, and .SHTML) that can potentially be associated with the browser. To change your default browser in Windows 11, you’ll need to click each one of these file types and select the browser of your choice. To get started, click the app box just below “.HTM.”

You’ll see a pop-up window that asks you how you want to open files of that type from now on. Select the browser you want to use from the list, then click “OK.”

When you click the first file type, you’ll see a pop-up warning from Microsoft asking you to reconsider switching away from Microsoft’s Edge browser. Click “Switch Anyway.”

After you change the association with .HTM, repeat the steps above with .HTML, .SHTML, .XHT, .XHTML, HTTP, and HTTPS. Click each entry, then set the association to the browser of your choice. When you’re done, you’ll have a default apps list full of associations to the browser you want to use.

After that, close Settings. The next time you double click an HTML file or encounter a web link, Windows will launch the browser you selected. Happy browsing!

Want your Windows PC to open links in Firefox, your Mac to load up Chrome, or your iPhone to favor Edge? Here’s how to change the default web browser on a PC, Mac, iPhone, iPad, and Android device.

How to set a default web browser in windows

Every computer and mobile device comes with a default web browser. Windows 10 has Microsoft Edge, while Apple devices run Safari. On Android, the default may be Google Chrome, Samsung Internet, or something else, like the stock Android browser prevalent in older models.

However, you don’t have to stick with that default. By changing it, any link or web-based file you click will open in your browser of choice. Here’s how to make the switch for each type of operating system and platform.

Set by Browser

Before navigating to your device’s settings, go to your desired browser and set it as the default. To do this in Google Chrome, for example, click the three-dot icon in the upper right and go to Settings > Default browser > Make default. In Firefox, click the hamburger icon in the upper right and select Options. In the General section, click Make default.

Windows 10

In Windows 10, Microsoft has replaced Internet Explorer with Edge, which received a Chromium-based overhaul in 2020. Naturally, Microsoft recommends that you stick with its browser, but you can change it. Open the Windows 10 Settings menu and navigate to Apps > Default Apps. Scroll down and click Web browser, and you can choose from Edge, Firefox, Chrome, IE, or another program you can download from the Microsoft Store.

Windows 8.1

In Windows 8.1, you’re initially stuck with Internet Explorer as the default browser. Switch it out by opening the Charms bar and clicking the Settings icon. At the Settings pane, click Change PC Settings > Search and apps > Defaults. From here, the process is similar to Windows 10; click the current default for Web browser and change it to the browser of your choice.

Windows 7

Microsoft ceased offering security updates to Windows 7 in January 2020, so you should consider upgrading to a more modern and secure OS. Otherwise, Internet Explorer is again the default browser, but the process for changing it is different than in Windows 10 and 8.1. Open Control Panel in icon view and select Default Programs > Set your default programs. You can then select the browser you want set as the default.

Notice that the status indicates the new default browser currently has X of a certain number of defaults. Click Set this program as default, and the status should change to say that the browser has all its defaults.

macOS

Changing the default browser on a Mac is simple and quick. On your Mac, click the Apple menu in the top left of the screen, open System Preferences, and click the General icon. On the General screen, click the drop-down box next to Default web browser and change the selection to your preferred program.

iOS and iPadOS

In the past, Apple prevented you from changing the default browser on your iPhone or iPad, but that was changed with iOS 14 and iPadOS. To switch the default from Safari to any other browser, go to Settings and select the browser you want—be it Chrome, Firefox, or Edge. Tap the entry for Default Browser App and select the browser you wish to use.

Android

The only way to set Google Chrome as the default web browser on Android is through the phone’s settings. These settings will differ depending on the manufacturer, but you can generally swipe down from the top of the screen and tap the gear icon to enter the Settings menu.

Look for an option that says Apps or Apps & Notifications. Open the list of installed apps and tap the entry for your preferred browser. Swipe down the info screen for the selected app, then tap the “Browser app” entry and select the new default.

To set Firefox as the default browser, tap the three-dot icon in the lower-right corner of the app, then choose Settings and turn on the switch next to Make Firefox your default browser. Tap the entry for Browser app and change the default to Firefox.

For Edge, tap the three-dot icon and select Settings. Swipe down the Settings screen and tap Set default browser, then tap Set default browser from the pop-up window. This takes you to the phone’s Default apps settings where you can select Browser app to set a new default.

On Windows 10, after a new clean installation or new device setup, the system configures Microsoft Edge as the default web browser experience. In other words, this means that out-of-the-box, when you click a link, or an application makes a web request, the page will open with Edge regardless of any other app you may have installed.

Although the new version of Microsoft Edge based on the Google’s Chromium engine is more compatible, offers better extension support, and more features compared to its predecessor, you may still prefer another browser (such as Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, or Opera) to be the system default.

If you use another application to browse the web, and it is not currently set as default, Windows 10 includes an option to ditch Edge or any other browser to set the app you want.

In this Windows 10 guide, you will learn the steps to replace Microsoft Edge as your default web browser with another application.

How to change default browser on Windows 10

To set your preferred web browser as the new default on Windows 10, use these steps:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Click on Apps.
  3. Click on Default apps.
  4. Under the “Choose default apps” section, click the current default browser.

Select the browser you want to make the new default. For example, Firefox or Google Chrome.

Source: Windows Central

Once you complete the steps, the previous browser will continue to be available on your device, but when an app needs to open a web page, it will start with the new application you specified.

Although the Settings app makes it a straightforward process, most web browsers provide an option to access the settings page from within the application. For instance, if you want to set Google Chrome as the new default, on this page ( chrome://settings/defaultBrowser ), you can click the Make default button to access the Settings app to adjust the experience.

On Mozilla Firefox, you can open this page ( about:preferences#general ) and click the Make Default button to access the page to change the default browser.

We are focusing this guide on setting Chrome or Firefox as the new default on Windows 10, but you can select any browser you prefer.

One more thing, Hammad. Browsers are notorious for claiming the throne of default browser without asking permission. So whatever browser you choose, in its setup screen–such as the Firefox screen, fourth from the bottom–look for a setting that tells your chosen browser to check each time you run it to make use it’s still the default. If some other browser has horned it, then your chosen browser will reset the setting to make it the dwfault again.

And if the browser I want default is not in the list, but it is clearly installed as I’m running it and everywhere is working absolutely fine?…

Hello, Steve. I hope you can help me. I’m a senior citizen, with a goofed-up laptop. I was trying to use it one day, and suddenly something popped up; but when I tried to clear it (push the button that I didn’t want it), my regular default browser, which is Facebook, disappeared, and one I never heard of took it’s place & now I can’t get rid of it. It’s called… Trovi. It has also cleared the Menu, where the lists of Default Programs are to be stored. I know I need an Upgrade (& I’m try’g to learn to use this thing), but, at present, except for what I can get online, I have no one that can help me. I have no transportation & I’ve been sick, so I use the laptop to play Free games, for company–when it’ll work. I thank you for any help you may be able to give me.

Here’s how to make Chrome, Firefox, or another browser the primary one in Windows 10. (But are you sure you want to?)

Contributing Editor, Computerworld |

Microsoft has been struggling to get people to use its Edge browser for years. Even though the company made Edge the default browser in Windows 10, users left in droves, most of them flocking to Google Chrome — and with good reason. The original version of Edge was underpowered, had difficult-to-use features, and offered very few extensions compared to Chrome and Firefox.

But in January 2020, Microsoft launched a new version of Edge that’s based on the same technologies that drive Chrome. The new Edge is a much better browser, and there are compelling reasons to use it. But you might still prefer to use Chrome, Firefox, or one of the many other browsers out there.

Note that even if you’ve previously set up another browser to be your default, it might have been changed since then. When there’s a major Windows 10 upgrade, the upgrade recommends switching to Edge, and you might have inadvertently made the switch.

Whatever the reason, if Edge is your default Windows 10 browser, it’s easy to switch to the browser of your choice. As I’ll show you, it only takes a few minutes.

The instructions in this article assume that you’ve installed the latest version of Windows 10 — version 20H2, a.k.a. the October 2020 Update. If you haven’t installed it, the screens you see may vary somewhat from what you see here.

Why you might want to stick with Edge

By now, the new Edge has most likely been automatically delivered to most Windows 10 Home and Pro users via Windows Update. Enterprise users may or may not have it yet, depending on their IT departments’ rollout plans. If you’ve been using the old Edge as your default browser, the new one will be your default as well. If you’ve set another browser as your default, the new Edge won’t automatically override your preference — but like all browsers, it will ask if you want to make it the default.

It’s probably worth at least trying out the new Edge. The browser offers a clean design with intuitive features. The biggest drawback to the old Edge was its paltry selection of browser extensions, but because the new Edge uses the same rendering engine as Chrome, it can run Chrome extensions, which number in the thousands. And unlike Chrome, Edge offers tracking prevention, which blocks ad providers from tracking you from website to website.

In my tests, Edge also feels faster than Chrome and uses on average 14% less RAM. And it has some interesting features worth trying, such as the ability to launch a website as if it’s an app.

All that said, you might not be interested in trying out the new Edge, or you might try it and decide you still prefer Chrome, Firefox, or another browser. You may, for example, like Firefox’s ability to alert you when a website covertly uses your computer’s processor to mine cryptocurrency in the background, without your knowledge. Or you might like the way Chrome’s Omnibox (the place you type URLs and searches) can do things like perform math functions, convert currencies, or answer questions such as naming the capitals of U.S. states without having to search the internet.

If you want to use another browser as your default, here’s what to do.

How to designate another browser as your default

The first thing you need to do to switch to another browser as your default is to install the other browser on your system. After that’s done, click the Windows 10 Start button and click the Settings icon that appears on the left-hand side of the screen. (It looks like a little gear.) You can alternatively type settings into the search box and click the Settings result that appears at the top of the screen.

To change your default browser in Windows 10, start in the Settings app.

In the Settings app, select Apps > Default apps. The “Default apps” screen appears. It shows the default apps for email, maps, playing music and videos, viewing photos, and more. To change the default browser, you’ll have to scroll down toward the bottom of your screen.

Navigate to the “Default apps” screen and scroll down.

Near the bottom of the screen, you’ll see Microsoft Edge under the “Web browser” listing. Click the Microsoft Edge icon and you’ll see a pop-up with a list of your installed browsers.

Select a different browser to be your default.

(Side note: The pop-up also has a “Look for an app in the Microsoft Store” option, but if you click it, you won’t find Chrome, Firefox, Opera, or any other browser you’ve likely ever heard of. Clicking it launches a search of the Windows App Store for the term “http,” which turns up a motley collection of apps, from file downloaders to an app that dims your Windows background to make it easier to view videos. There are also some little-known browsers listed, such as Super-Fast Browser and BlueSky Browser. Try them out if you like, but keep in mind that they’re Windows Store apps, and as a general rule, Windows Store apps are underpowered compared to desktop apps like Chrome, Firefox, and Opera.)

Click the browser that you’d like to be your default browser. No need to restart; your work is done.

Microsoft is making it easier for Windows 11 users to change their default web browser. The company is reportedly going back on some recent changes made to Windows 11 that made changing your default browser tricky. This was said to be the company’s move to motivate users to keep the Microsoft Edge browser as the default browser. However, it seems that the strategy from Microsoft did not work and now, the company is making it easier to change your default web browser on Windows 11. Let us take a look:

The feature was first pointed out by reverse engineer Rafael Rivera, who said that the Windows build 22509 has a new “Set Default Browser” button. With the new change, the option to change the browser will appear within the Windows 11 Settings, under the “Apps” tab and the “Default Apps” option. There is a new “Set Default” button on the top right of the Default Apps page, screenshots shared by Rivera show. With the new method, all users need to do in terms of changing their web browser is go to Settings > Apps > Default Apps > select the web browser they want to set as default > Click “Set Default” on top.

Currently, Windows 11 users have no dedicated button to simply change the default browser. Instead, users have to set the default app for each kind of extension (.htm, hmlt, webp, etc)/ This makes it a cumbersome process, leading to many users leaving the default app as Microsoft Edge. Recently, Microsoft’s Edge browser was spotted with a message that is aimed to divert people from using its fiercest competitor, Google Chrome. “Still using Google Chrome? That is so 2008!” the message reads, along with other such prompts.

Looking to swap out your default web browser in Windows 11? Here’s how you can do it in a few steps.

  1. Open the Windows 11 Settings App
  2. Click the Apps link in the sidebar
  3. Click the Default apps subsection on the right
  4. Under where it says set defaults for applications search for your web browser in the list
  5. Click on the web browser name
  6. Change every file type or link type in the list so it has your browser name instead of Microsoft Edge.

There are a lot of things that are different about Windows 11 in its current beta state. When compared to Windows 10, the design has changed, and so have a few of the stock apps. One change that is quite controversial recently has to do with changing the default web browser. Microsoft has (so far) removed the ability in Windows 11 to switch browsers with one click, although you can still change file associations to set a default browser.

This was recently covered by The Verge’s Tom Warren who notes that Microsoft is making it harder to switch default web browsers in the next-generation operating system.

But is that actually the case? We’ll let you be the judge, so follow along with us as we look at how you can change the default web browser in Windows 11.

Just keep in mind though, that our guide is subject to change. Windows 11 is currently in beta and isn’t final. The steps we mention here might change, and we’ll do our best to keep the guide updated.

The Windows 11 Default Browser Settings Page

One of the biggest reasons people will want to change the default web browser is to swap from using Edge to Chrome. If you missed your initial chance via the one-time-only “always use this app” button that you get when you install Chrome in Windows 11, here’s how you can permanently swap to Chrome over Edge.

Again, there is a big change here in Windows 11 compared to Windows 10. Rather than visit a single app defaults settings page and use a big button to click to change the default web browser, you’ll need to individually change the default for each kind of web link or file type. You can see the change in our slider above, but here’s a look at how.

Step 1: Open Google Chrome and click on the settings page

Step 2: Choose Default Browser on the sidebar

Step 3: Click the Make Default button

Step 4: In the settings page that opens up, and search for Google Chome in the Search Apps box

Step 5: Click the link to the right of the box, and select Google Chrome. Change every one of the default file types or link types from Microsoft Edge to Google Chrome.

In Microsoft’s fairness, the most commonly used web types and links are right upfront for you to change. These include .htm and .html. You can swap these are you see fit. When finished, just close out of the web browser, and you’re good.

Changing to a different web browser

How to set a default web browser in windows

If Google Chrome isn’t your web browser of choice, then the steps to change the default web browser might be different for you. Follow our directions below for more on how you can change this.

Step 1: Open the Windows 11 Settings App

Step 2: Click the Apps link in the sidebar

Step 3: Click the Default apps subsection on the right

Step 4: Under where it says set defaults for applications search for your web browser in the list

Step 5: Click on the web browser name

Step 6: Change every file type or link type in the list so it has your browser name instead of Microsoft Edge.

Possible changes to come?

The reaction to these settings changes has been very mixed and there’s currently a thread in the Windows 11 Feedback hub with over 600 upvotes about this. Spokespersons for other web browsers have also been slamming Microsoft’s new way of changing the default web browser. Microsoft, however, says that it is “constantly listening and learning, and welcome customer feedback that helps shape Windows.” That said, there is hope things might change soon.

In Windows 10 you can set a web browser as the default in one step

This overview is now missing in Windows 11, so you have to assign each file type and protocol individually to the desired default program. The easiest way to do this is to search in Apps > Default apps for the program you want to make the default.

How to set a default web browser in windows

Search for the application that you want to set as the default

For example, if you search for “Chrome,” you will get all the file extensions and protocols that this browser is registered with.

Most of them are assigned to Microsoft Edge after an update to Windows 11 and must be individually redirected to Chrome. In this case, you see a message persuading the user to stay with Edge.

How to set a default web browser in windows

All file types and protocols must be assigned manually to the future standard browser

Set up a reference system for GPO ^

To set a default program via GPO, configure the default apps on the admin machine, export them to an XML file, and specify it as a configuration file in the appropriate group policy.

To create a sample configuration for default apps, you need to log on to the machine with an admin account because the DISM utility requires elevated privileges. On the other hand, if you configure the file type associations as a normal user, then these changes will be neglected because DISM will export not these but the settings of the privileged user.

The standard browser is set using the Windows 11 GUI, as described above. The good news is that you can also use a PC with Windows 10 for this because the format of the exported settings remains the same.

Once you have specified all the default apps you want, switch to a command prompt or PowerShell session, and run the following command:

This will write the list of default apps and their associated file types or protocols to the assoc.xml file. This file contains the settings for both the web browser and all other types of applications. However, you can just keep the entries you actually need and import only the sections that affect the browser. Other standard apps are not changed or deleted by importing the reduced list on the target computers.

This task can be done relatively easily with PowerShell. For example, if you have defined Chrome as the default on the reference computer, then extract the settings responsible for the browser with this command:

The output file contains an empty line before the XML declaration, which you should remove in an editor. Then copy it to a file share that can be accessed by all target PCs.

How to set a default web browser in windows

Use PowerShell to write entries for Chrome from the configuration file into a separate file

Creating a GPO ^

Now you can create a GPO that will implement the XML file’s configuration on the target computers. The responsible setting can be found under Computer Configuration > Policies > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > File Explorer and is called Set a default association configuration file.

As you can see from the policy path, the default browser can be set in this way only for computers and not for specific users.

How to set a default web browser in windows

Distribute the XML file with the assignments for standard programs via a GPO

After activating the setting, enter the name and path of the configuration file in the corresponding field. On the next reboot, all computers in the scope of this GPO should adopt the default browser from the XML file, in our example, Google Chrome.

Conclusion ^

Even though the interactive configuration of the default browser has become unnecessarily cumbersome in Windows 11, there is no fundamental change in the central configuration of default apps via GPO. Those who want to simplify the customization of the reference computer can also perform this task under Windows 10.

Just like Windows 10, the Edge browser also comes preinstalled in Windows 11, and Microsoft doesn’t want users to set Chrome, Firefox, and other web browsers as a default web browser in Windows 11. That means, most common file and links type will open with Edge browser.

According to Microsoft Edge is faster than Chrome and any other modern browser available at the moment. There’s nothing wrong with using Edge a default browser in Windows 11 because it’s based on Chromium and offer almost all the feature that a browser must have.

In case, you’re not a fan of Microsoft Edge browser and want to set Chrome or even Firefox as the default browser in Windows 11, then it is also possible, but the process is tricky.

In Windows 11 users have to manually set the preferred browser as default to open a particular file and link type. It’s quite obvious that the purpose of this is to make it difficult for the users to remove Edge as the default browser.

No matter Windows 11 is officially available to all users, but it’s still under development and it is possible that Microsoft might change this in upcoming feature updates.

How to Change Default Web Browser in Windows 11 to Chrome | Firefox

In case, you’re not a fan of the Edge browser and want to replace it with either Chrome, Firefox, or other browsers of your choice. Here’s how you can do that:

Update – 02/12/2021 – Starting with Windows 11 Dev build 22509, the company has added an option in the Default apps settings page of Windows 11 using which users can quickly set a browser of their choice as default.

Before following the below steps, make sure the browser of your choice is installed on your Windows 11 PC.

Here are quick steps:

Launch Settings app > Apps > Default Apps. On the right side, scroll down until you will prefer the browser, (let’s say Chrome) that you want to set a default, and click on it.

How to set a default web browser in windows

On the top of the Chrome settings page, you will find a new option that reads “Make Google Chrome default browser” accompanied by the Set default button.

How to set a default web browser in windows

All you need to do is to click on the Set Default button and instantly Chrome will set as the default browser in Windows 11.

Note – If you want to set Firefox, then scroll down to Firefox from the list of apps. You will find the option “Make Firefox default browser” with the Set default button. And you know what to do next.

Following this method, you will be able to set any browser as default in Windows 11 with a single click.

Although the above method is only available in the latest version of the Windows 11 dev channel, so you need to wait a couple of weeks to get this option. In the meantime following are the steps to remove Microsoft Edge and set the browser of your choice as the default browser in Windows 11

Launch Settings app in Windows 11 by pressing WIN + I key combo.

On the left side, switch to the Apps tab, and then on the right side, select Default apps.

Something New

Changing the default browser in Windows 11 has been a pain in the butt since its release. Thankfully, it looks like it’s about to get way easier.

Windows 11 is already a solid OS, but thanks to a new feature that’ll let users easily set a default web browser, Microsoft is about to make it even better. Windows 11 is one of the most drastic Windows updates in recent memory. It ushers in a brand new design language, reimagines the Taskbar and Start menu, and is trying to make widgets cool again. It’s still Windows at its core, but it feels more fluid and modern than any previous version.

For most people, the majority of their time on a computer is spent in a web browser. The default browser of choice for Windows 11 is Microsoft Edge. Users can switch to something else if it’s not a good fit, but in Windows 11, Microsoft made this process unnecessarily complicated. After months of nagging and complaining for it to get better, it looks like Microsoft is actually listening.

First spotted by developer Rafael Rivera, a new build in the Windows 11 Dev Channel introduces a new ‘Set default’ button that changes Windows’ default browser with a single click — something that hasn’t existed in Windows 11 since its release. Microsoft confirmed this change to The Verge, saying, “In the Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 22509 released to the Dev Channel on Wednesday, we streamlined the ability for a Windows Insider to set the ‘default browser.'” This news comes just one day after Microsoft added pop-ups in Windows 11 when visiting the Chrome download page as a way to deter folks from leaving Edge.

Windows build 22509 has a new browser [Set default] button. 👀 pic.twitter.com/kRDFPKfJMv

A Huge Upgrade From How Windows 11 Currently Works

This may seem like a feature that should already exist in Windows 11, but as users are well aware, it absolutely does not. The current process for changing the default browser requires users to open the Settings app, navigate to the ‘Default apps’ page, and then individually change the browser option for nearly a dozen files types — including HTM, HTML, PDF, SHTML, SVG, WEBP, XHT, XHTML, FTP, HTTP, and HTTPS. Only once that is all done is a different browser the new ‘default’ one. It appears all of those granular controls are still present in Build 22509, but if someone doesn’t care about those individual settings, they can convert all of them with a single click.

The only downside right now is the uncertainty of when this functionality will roll out to everyone. The ‘Set default’ button is only present in the Dev Channel right now for Windows Insiders. It’s almost certainly heading to other builds in the near future, but the timing for that rollout hasn’t been confirmed.

I’m up and running in Windows 11 but not a fan of Microsoft Edge. Is it possible to change Web browsers? I downloaded Chrome but when I requested it be the default, I was dropped into Settings??

I find it really interesting when people want to change from Microsoft Edge to Google Chrome because it turns out that they’re basically the same browser inside: Chromium. As part of migrating away from Internet Explorer, Microsoft decided not to build a new browser from scratch but instead built one on top of the open-source subset of Google’s Chrome browser. You guessed it, Chromium.

Still, the two do have a very different feel to them and there’s no question that Chrome is more tightly integrated into the Google world (Docs, Calendar, Gmail, etc), while Edge is more integrated into the Microsoft world (Outlook, Bing, etc). So if you want to run Windows 11 and have Google Chrome as your default browser, so be it!

Except that Microsoft’s really embedded Edge into Windows 11 in a more complicated way than Internet Explorer was ever tied into earlier versions of Windows. So you can change it, sort of, but not every single program will honor that change. I’ll show you what I mean and you can decide if you want to live with the mishmash or just default to Edge until Microsoft is inevitably forced by market pressures to make switching easier.

CHANGE WINDOWS 11 DEFAULT WEB BROWSER

Start by downloading a fresh version of Google Chrome from www.google.com/chrome/. Fire it up and it’ll prompt you to choose it as your new default browser. You can also just go to ••• > Settings > Default browser, as shown below:

How to set a default web browser in windows

I mean, it’s offering “Make default”, so it seems reasonable that it should know how to do that, right? Windows 11, however, makes it all quite a bit more complicated, so much so that Chrome simply pops open the “Choose defaults” window within Windows 11 itself.

Here’s what you’ll see:

How to set a default web browser in windows

Web browsers are such an essential part of a modern operating system that it’s not as simple as “Default browser = ” or anything like that. Instead, defaults are woven around filetypes and filename suffixes. Choose Google Chrome, as shown above, and click to find all the many, many filetypes you can switch to using Chrome:

How to set a default web browser in windows

Why it differentiates .htm from .html I cannot explain, but as you can see, the default for everything – even in the Google Chrome default apps settings area – is Microsoft Edge.

ARE YOU SURE YOU WANT TO SWITCH DEFAULT BROWSER?

Change .htm, .html, and .shtml to Google Chrome. Which you can’t do without some warnings pop up:

How to set a default web browser in windows

Choose “Switch anyway” and you can choose which program you want (again, within the Google Chrome settings, which seems unnecessarily obfuscated when it could have that as the default switch):

How to set a default web browser in windows

Click on “Google Chrome” (or another browser if you’re switching to Brave, Firefox, Opera, or similar) and “OK”.

Scroll down and change all the Web-related filetypes. Eventually it should look like this:

How to set a default web browser in windows

Done. Or are you?

NEW DEFAULT WIN11 BROWSER. SORT OF.

Open up an email message in Outlook (aka Microsoft Mail now) and will it open in the new browser? No. It’ll pop up a menu as shown:

How to set a default web browser in windows

Remember, this is after I’ve switched default browsers and restarted the email program. It still wants Edge to win!

Choose Google Chrome here and subsequent links should work without prompting.

Do a URL search within Windows 11 – even after a restart – and notice what browser icon pops up:

How to set a default web browser in windows

Yup, it still wants to hand that URL to Microsoft Edge.

If you make the mistake of actually launching Edge at this point, it has rather a complex window explaining why you really should just change back (and its switch is much easier than Google’s!)…

How to set a default web browser in windows

So there you have it. I expect in a month or three this will have changed as people complain to Microsoft how difficult the process of switching browsers has become, but who knows. Maybe Microsoft will just say “use Edge, stop complaining” and that’ll be that. We shall see! Meanwhile, good luck.

To choose the default browser in Windows 10, any of the third-party browsers Google Chrome, Opera, Mozilla Firefox and others, is not difficult, but for many users who faced the new system for the first time faced this may seem complicated because the actions needed for this are different than on previous versions of the system. This guide will show you two ways to change the default web browser in Windows 10.

Two Ways To Change The Default Web Browser In Windows 10

There are two ways (the second approach in cases where the configuration of the main browser settings for some reason does not work), as well as additional information on the topic, which may be useful.

Change the default web browser in Settings

In previous versions of Windows, if you wanted to change the default browser, for example, Google Chrome and Opera, you could just go to its own settings and press the appropriate button, and now it does not work.

How to set a default web browser in windows

A standard way for Windows 10 is through “Settings”. Click on “Start” a and go to “Settings” or you can do it by pressing Win + I on your keyboard. Then go to system and click on “Default apps”.

In the “Web Browser”, click on the name of the current default browser, and select from the list one that you want to use instead.

After these actions, almost all links, documents, and websites will be opened in your default browser. However, it is likely that it will not work for certain types of files and links and some of them will continue to open in Microsoft Edge.

Change the default web browser in Control Panel

Another option to make this change (helps when a common way for some reason does not work) is to use the settings in Control Panel.

How to set a default web browser in windows

To do this, follow these steps:

Push and hold the right mouse button and click on “Control Panel” and then go to “Default Programs.” Click on “Set your default programs”. Scroll down to the browser that you want to make the default and then click “Set this program as default” and click OK.

Then, the chosen browser will be default in Windows 10.

Microsoft is reverting a change in Windows 11 that made it much harder to change your default browser through the system settings. With Windows 11 build 22509, which was released earlier this week, Microsoft has added a button to the Settings app that allows you to quickly change your default browser to whatever you prefer, as discovered by Twitter user Rafael Rivera (via The Verge).

As seen in an image shared by Rivera, when you head into the file associations page for a browser like Chrome, you’ll now see a button at the top that lets you make it your default browser. This is also the page you’re taken to when a browser asks you if you want to set it as the default, so it’s now much easier to change your default browser with a couple of clicks. Microsoft has confirmed this change is intentional, though it didn’t say whether we’ll need to wait for a full feature update next fall or if it will be delivered through a cumulative update to the current version of Windows 11.

This change is an important one because this was one of the most controversial moves Microsoft made in its attempt to force users to use the Edge browser. When you attempt to open a link outside a browser in Windows 11 and you have multiple browsers installed, you’re asked to choose a browser. But unless you specifically choose a different browser from Edge andВ mark the checkbox to make that browser your default, Edge will be the default from there on out. To add insult to injury, the Windows 11 Settings page no longer lets you choose a default browser app in general; instead, you have to change the associations for the HTTP protocol, HTML files, and so on individually, which made it much more tedious to change your default browser. This prompted Mozilla to develop a hack that allowed Firefox to circumvent all of this and make itself the default browser.

It gets worse, however, as Microsoft has taken other steps that go against user choice. The company recently blocked Edge Deflector, an app that redirected native Windows 11 links from Edge to the user’s default browser. Just yesterday, it was discovered that the company is also showing discouraging prompts in the Edge browser if users tried to download Google Chrome. Hopefully, we’ll see more consumer-friendly changes that make it easier for users to choose their own browser.

Aside from this change, Windows 11 build 22509 included a few more tweaks for Windows 11, namely giving users more new customization options for the Start menu, allowing them to either see more pinned items or more items from the Recommended list at the bottom. It also brought more settings from the Control Panel into the Windows 11 Settings app, part of Microsoft’s process to unify all its settings under one interface, which has been going for a few years now.

The default browser is the web browser that is automatically used when opening a web page or clicking on a web link. This document explains how to choose the default browser for both Windows and OS X.

U-turn means setting an alternative default to Edge will be easier after all

How to set a default web browser in windows

Microsoft has backtracked on plans that made it more difficult to switch their default browser in Windows 11.

The company has introduced a button to set the default browser in the latest developer build of the operating system that will make it easier for people to use alternative browsers to its own Edge product.

Microsoft had changed the way that people set default browsers in Windows 11. Windows 10 included an easy option to change the default browser. It also presented a prompt that appeared when they opened an alternative browser, enabling them to set it as the default.

In Windows 11, that prompt appears only once when a user opens a newly installed browser for the first time. Unless the user remembers to select “always use this app” as an option, it won’t be selected as a default and the operating system doesn’t prompt them again.

In earlier builds of Windows 11, users had to change the default browser manually using a more difficult process than before. Now, they must select the default application to open particular file types. Because browsers can open multiple file types, including .htm and .html files, PDFs, SVG and others, this means manually setting multiple file types.

Microsoft appears to have rethought its process after public criticism. The Verge reported on a tweet by Windows application developer Rafael Rivera which confirmed a button that enables users to set the default browser in Windows build 22509.

The latest Edge developments come after Microsoft last month introduced a default extension that enables people to use credit when buying products in Edge. The company rolled out the Zip buy-now-pay-later service in the browser, even for merchants that didn’t ask for it. They would have to contact Microsoft to switch it off for their customers, Microsoft said.

A powershell script. Then again, if I was going through the work, I’d write it to install a different browser entirely and use that as the default. IE11 should be used only when necessary to access behind-the-times websites due to security risks.

We need IE 11 to be the default browser because there is an intranet web app that won’t display properly if users open it in Chrome, Firefox or Edge. Most users need this app, but some don’t so we want the users who never use that app to be able to change their default and not have it forced back to IE.

I haven’t seen any way to force this site to open only in IE 11. I think there are ways to redirect sites opened in Edge to IE, but that won’t help Chrome users.

Isn’t there a local security policy you can use to set default programs?

Computer Configuration > Administration Templates > Windows Components > File Explorer > Set a default associations configuration file

According to the local security policy entry, “If the policy is enabled, disabled, or not configured, users will still be able to override default file type and protocol associations.”

Yes, but we only want to set the default once. That policy will keep reapplying after every group policy refresh cycle and we don’t want that.
