How to set tabs aside for later in microsoft edge

Microsoft has recreated Edge browser and some features from the legacy Edge are still not available in the new Chromium-based browser. One of the features from legacy Microsoft Edge that is missing in new Edge is ‘set aside tabs’, which is helpful for people who open a lot of tabs at once.

By setting tabs aside, you could cut down on the clutter. In legacy Edge, you can use this feature to move opened aside tabs. To get back to those tabs, you only have to click the icon located at the top left corner, which will get you a list of the tab groups you’ve created.

It appears that Microsoft’s new Edge will also let you group tabs with the existing Collections feature. To set tabs aside in new Edge, you need to open several tabs and right-click on any one of the tabs, and select ‘Add all tabs to a new Collection’.

This will create a Collection of all opened tabs and Microsoft says these tab groups can get synced with other PCs that have Edge browser installed, so you can resume your work from anywhere.

Unlike classic Microsoft Edge, the tabs group won’t be deleted automatically after you reopen them.

The feature is currently live in Edge Canary for some users and it will be rolled out to everyone later this year.

Microsoft Edge privacy-invading telemetry

In related news, research claimed that the Chromium-based Microsoft Edge shares a lot of data with Microsoft in order to create a smart and seamless experience. As per the report, Microsoft Edge has more privacy-invading telemetry than other browsers, including Google Chrome and Chromium rivals.

Douglas J Leith from Trinity College Dublin, Ireland, said that the web browsers he tested are involved in anti-privacy activities. In his tests, he pitted Microsoft Edge against browsers such as Chrome, Firefox and Safari, and the results of Edge were rather disappointing.

The URLs typed into Microsoft Edge are reportedly shared with Microsoft sites and the browser is also creating unique hardware identifiers, possibly for diagnostic data or tracking. Handing over the URLs to Microsoft has some tangible benefits, like SmartScreen integration which could protect you from malicious websites.

According to his research, Microsoft Edge also shares the URL with Bing.com.

“Before navigating to [a website] Edge first transmits the URL to www.bing.com (this is a call to the Bing autocomplete API, and so shares user browsing history with the Bing service of Microsoft)”.

“Edge sends text to www.bing.com (a Microsoft search service) as it is typed. A request is sent for almost every letter typed, resulting in a total of 25 requests. Each request contains a cvid value that is persistent across requests although it is observed to change across browser restarts. Based on discussions with Microsoft, in fact its value changes between
search sessions i.e. after the user presses enter in the top bar,” Douglas J Leith noted.

In addition to Bing, every URL typed into the browser is shared with other Microsoft services such as SmartScreen.

It is worth noting that Google Chrome is engaged in similar activities, but the report concluded that both Edge and Yandex have more privacy-invading behaviour than other tested browsers.

Windows 10’s Creators Update brings a number of improvements to Microsoft Edge—mostly in the areas of responsiveness and security. It also includes some new tab management features, like being able to set aside tabs for later.

If you’re like us, you often find yourself with a bunch of open tabs. You’d like to get those tabs out of the way sometimes, but they’re maybe not worth saving as actual bookmarks. Edge now lets you set tabs aside in a sort of temporary workspace so that you can call them back up later.

In Edge—and with some tabs open—you just have to click the button directly to the left of your open tabs. This is an all-or-nothing affair. You cannot set aside individual tabs; you have to set aside all open tabs in the window. You can, however, set aside all your tabs and then selectively reopen just the tabs you want. We’ll get to that in just a minute.

How to set tabs aside for later in microsoft edge

Note that after clicking the button, all the open tabs disappear. To see the tabs you’ve set aside, click the “Tabs” button at the far left.

How to set tabs aside for later in microsoft edge

Tabs that you’ve set aside are organized by when you set them aside. You won’t see any exact dates here. It’s just very general categories like “just now,” “last week,” and “last month.”

Click any tab’s thumbnail to re-open it. Tabs you reopen will disappear from the list of tabs you’ve set aside. Click “Restore tabs” to restore all the tabs for that time period. Click the “X” to delete the tabs from a time period.

How to set tabs aside for later in microsoft edge

You can also click the “More” button (the ellipsis) to add a group of tabs to your favorites or to share those tabs with whatever apps or services you’ve set up for sharing.

How to set tabs aside for later in microsoft edge

It’s a pretty simple tab management system and there are some really basic things missing. You can’t search tabs you’ve set aside. You can only browse tabs by the general times you set them aside. The options for working with individual tabs instead of groups are limited. But if you really just need to get some tabs out of the way for a while so you can focus on particular task, this new feature works well enough.

How to set tabs aside for later in microsoft edge

Обратите внимание, что после нажатия кнопки все открытые вкладки исчезают. Чтобы увидеть отложенные вкладки, нажмите кнопку «Вкладки» в крайнем левом углу.

How to set tabs aside for later in microsoft edge

How to set tabs aside for later in microsoft edge

Вы также можете нажать кнопку «Еще» (многоточие), чтобы добавить группу вкладок в избранное или поделиться этими вкладками с любыми приложениями или службами, которые вы настроили для совместного использования.

How to set tabs aside for later in microsoft edge

Today, we’ll cover how to use tab groups in Edge to save groups of tabs for later viewing.

Step 1: Set Tabs Aside

To save the current group of tabs, click the Set these tabs aside button in the upper-left corner of the Edge window.

You can do this multiple times to set aside different groups of tabs.

Restored tabs open next to the tabs already open in the browser. If you don’t want to mix groups of tabs, close all the currently open tabs before restoring a group of tabs. You can always save the currently open tabs as a group before opening another group.

Groups of tabs you’ve set aside are saved even after you close Edge, until you restore or delete them (discussed at the end of this article).

NOTE: Tabs you’ve set aside on one device will not sync to other Windows devices using your Microsoft account.

No confirmation displays when removing a group of tabs, so be sure you want to remove them before you do so.

New Microsoft Edge does not contain ‘Set aside tabs’ feature from Microsoft Edge legacy, now you can add it to the new Edge and Chrome browsers by installing an extension available on Chrome and Edge add-on Stores.

How to set tabs aside for later in microsoft edge

The previous version of the Edge browser allows you to set all open tabs aside by clicking on the icon on the left, you can restore and check back them later whenever you want, this clears the tab clutter and you won’t lose the open tabs.

Microsoft is still undecided about bringing the tab groups feature to the new Edge, meanwhile, you can push tabs aside in Chrome and Edge Chromium browsers by installing ‘Tabs Aside’ extension.

Tabs Aside Extension for Edge and Chrome

Using the extension is pretty straight forward.

1.Install the extension in Chrome or Edge from here and here

2. Click on the Tabs Aside icon

3. Click on ‘Set current tabs aside’.

4. The tabs will vanish as if you’ve closed them, click on the extension icon, and click the ‘Restore tab’s button for tabs that you want to see again.

By clicking the menu next to Restore tabs, you can able to reopen tabs without removing and can bookmark or favorite the aside tabs. Currently, share tabs functionality is not working in Edge and Chrome doesn’t support that feature.

The extension is open-source, supports dark mode, and lets you ‘restore one tab from collection without removing’.

What you need to know

  • It appears Microsoft Edge will carry your “set aside” tabs forward as favorites at release.
  • The option was spotted in the current “stable” release of the new Edge.
  • The “set aside” feature won’t be available in the new Edge, though it may be added later.

One of the features from the legacy Microsoft Edge that isn’t available in the new Chromium-based Edge is “set aside” for tabs. While there’s no indication that the feature will definitely be added in the future, Microsoft appears to be planning a way for you to migrate any tabs that you’ve set aside to the new version of the browser.

As first noticed by Techdows (via Neowin), the current Edge “stable” release, which isn’t available through official means, moves any tabs you’ve set aside to your favorites list upon installation. If you right click a tab to open its context menu, you’ll now see an option labeled “Find tabs you’ve set aside in ‘Favorites'” at the end of the list.

Without a dedicated “set aside” feature for tabs at launch, it makes sense that Microsoft would add the option to preserve any collections of tabs you’ve set up by moving them forward in this way. Going forward, the new “Collections” feature, which will be available at launch, operates in a similar way to how some people have used set aside. Collections are a robust way to gather links, images, and text in one spot for any reason, such planning a trip or keeping up with work projects.

We could see the “set aside” feature return in some form in the future, but it’s unclear for now whether Microsoft has it in the works. The new Microsoft Edge is set to launch on January 15 for Windows and macOS, completing the journey for the overhauled browser’s move through the testing phases to launch. At Ignite 2019, Microsoft also revealed it plans to bring Edge to Linux “in the future.”

Ad blockers are a wonderful thing. They do exactly what they’re supposed to: block ads when browsing the web. Here’s the best for Microsoft Edge.

It’s easy to lose track of what’s in your tabs, especially if you have many tabs open from the same site that all look alike. The new tab preview bar and “Set these tabs aside” features in Microsoft Edge with the Windows 10 Creators Update allow you to easily manage and navigate your tabs.

Keep track of your tabs with the new tab preview bar:

Microsoft Edge gets the tab grouping feature in Windows 10 Creators Update. This new feature lets you set aside a group of tabs, which you can restore later or quickly add the tab group to favorites.

Note: Information in this article does not apply to the new Microsoft Edge (Chromium). It’s applicable to the old Microsoft Edge browser only.

Set tabs aside in Edge

Open a set of tabs in Microsoft Edge. For example, you can open websites of similar nature (such as news sites) which you want to group them aside. Click the “Set these tabs aside” icon, which is the 2nd icon in the top left corner of the title bar.

This keeps all those open tabs aside by creating a new tab group. You can create as many groups as you’d like and restore them later. To restore the tabs which you’ve set aside, click “Tabs you’ve set aside” (the 1st icon) in the top left corner of the title bar.

Select the tab group you want to restore and click “Restore tabs”.

Add a tab group to favorites

You can add the tab group to favorites by clicking the more button (shown with three dots) and clicking “Add tabs to favorites”.

The tab group is added to favorites in a new folder under Favorites. The newly created folder uses the Tabs from [current_date] naming convention.

Share a tab group or tab session with other apps

The tabs that you set aside can be shared with other apps that support the share-target feature. For instance, you can send the tab group to Mail app via the modern share option.

Open the “Tabs you’ve set aside” panel, click the three dots next to the tab session you want to share, and click “Share tabs”.

Select the app with which you want to share the list of website addresses in that tab group or session, along with the thumbnail image. You can send the list to OneNote, or to Mail.

Tab groups (set aside tabs) is a feature which was first introduced in preview build 14997. The ability to share tab groups with apps was added in build 15007. That’s a cool new feature.

Setting tabs aside is a good solution for pages that you only want to read once, but what about the pages that you are going to visit again and again? Save pages as bookmarks so that they are permanently accessible from Edge whenever you need them again. This is a great solution for things like your email accounts and bank accounts that you will be visiting regularly.

Windows 10 Creator’s update brings new features and the “Set these tabs aside” capability to Microsoft Edge. When you are browsing your favorite sites and have too many open tabs, you can easily set all of them aside to group together and access individually later. It works after you close the Edge or restart the system. I have upgraded my Surface Pro 4 tablet to the version 1703. The function really helps declutter, but also actually creates the problem for me.

When I open more than one tabs in Edge, a new icon appears the left of the tab bar and looks like an arrow which points to the left side. This is the set tabs aside button and next to the tab. Sometime I need to click or tap on the first tab in the list, I always click on the set aside button accidentally.

It is very annoying that my current productivity is loosing. Then I have to reload all tabs again and it is triggered randomly. That make my browsing experience to be horrible. So I need to disable the set tabs aside completely.

However, I open the advanced settings in Edge, go inside the Settings app, and could not find any related option to turn it off. It seems that no key with set tabs aside stores in the registry editor for making changes.

I notice that many people are facing the same problem with Edge and it is impossible to resolve it since now. I think the only way is to send a feedback for it to Microsoft, so I am able to remove the set tabs aside button easily.

You can set tabs aside in Microsoft Edge in Windows 10 Creators Update. This new feature allows you to create tab groups in Edge which can be restored later or added to Favorites. Let’s explore this useful addition to the Edge browser.

Edge is the new default browser in Windows 10. It’s a Universal app which has extension support, a fast rendering engine and a simplified user interface. Microsoft released Edge as the succesor to Internet Explorer to provide a smoother experience and modern web standards support.

In the updated user interface, Edge has 2 new buttons in the top left corner to manage your tabs. One of them can be used to set aside a group of tabs and the other can be used to restore them later or add them to Favorites directly.

Set Tabs Aside in Microsoft Edge (Tab Groups)

Here is how to use the Set Tabs Aside feature in Microsoft Edge.

Open all the tabs you want to organize in a group. For example, it can be those sites which you start with your daily browser session.

Once you have opened all the desired tabs, click the second icon from the left in the title bar, “Set these tabs aside”. See the screenshot below:

All opened tabs will be saved in a group. Groups are stored between browser sessions, which is very handy. You can create several groups of your choice.

Now, to restore the tabs you saved earlier, click the first icon from the left in the title bar, “Tabs you’ve set aside”. Each group has the link “Restore tabs” on the left. Once you click it, all the tabs in one group will be opened at once. How to set tabs aside for later in microsoft edgeHow to set tabs aside for later in microsoft edge

There is also the ability to add the entire tab group to Favorites. On the right of the tab group’s title, there is a button with three dots. It shows an additional menu with the “Add to favorites” command.

Once you click it, a new folder inside the Favorites menu of Edge will be created. It will be named as “Tabs from “. See the following screenshot:How to set tabs aside for later in microsoft edge

Keep in mind that Windows 10 build 14997 comes with a very early version of this Set Tabs Aside feature in Microsoft Edge. It might change drastically in the final version of Windows 10 Creators Update, which is expected in March 2017.

It’s great to see this feature, but I think Mozilla’s Tab Group idea was better in Firefox.

The Creator’s update added a new feature to Edge called “setting aside tabs”. While it sounds nice, I really don’t need it and it is actually creating problems for me. While clicking on the first tab in the list, I often accidentally click on the set aside button and all tabs have to be reloaded again.

Is there some switch to disable this new feature?

Dyan Rey from Microsoft replied on July 20, 2017 :

Disabling “set these tabs aside” is not yet possible in Microsoft Edge. Your feedback helps to continually improve your experience with our product.

Here are the steps on how to submit a feedback:

  1. On your Windows 10 device, search for Feedback Hub in the Cortana Search box, and launch the application.
  2. Navigate to Feedback in the left menu, then press + Add new feedback.
  3. Select the Problem, share any details you think are relevant, and choose an appropriate category and subcategory.
  4. Important: If possible, reproduce the issue after clicking Begin monitoring (or Start capture) near the end of the form; Stop monitoring when you are done.
  5. Once you have completed the form and monitoring, click Submit.
  6. Click Continue using Feedback Hub.
  7. Click My feedback at the top, and find the item you submitted (it may take a while to appear).
  8. Open the item you submitted, then click Share.
  9. Click Copy link, then paste the link here in your response (it will look like https://aka.ms\ link>)

I found this link mentioned : https://aka.ms/B6urh8 , but I’m unwilling to sign on to the Feedback app to verify it.

Other answers by Microsoft that say the same :

I am afraid that all you can do at the moment is join your voice to the feedback channel, and wait for Microsoft to act. As far as I know, there are actually no non-Microsoft workarounds or hacks.

The ability to set tabs aside in Edge was introduced with the Windows 10 Creators update, which came in April, 2017. Setting aside tabs allows you to save a group of tabs for later. If you like to work on multiple things simultaneously, setting tabs aside may come as a pretty helpful feature to you. In what follow I will explain in detail how it works, what it can do and why you need to start using it. Or not.

By the way, if you are not sure how to work with tabs in Microsoft Edge, please feel free to check out my article on using tabs in Edge.

Oh, and one more thing before we dive into the matter of setting tabs aside in Microsoft Edge. Microsoft has built this feature to help you stay organized, but I do have to mention that there are groups of people who DON’t like the feature. The reason is that the button to set tabs aside in Edge can easily be clicked by accident (as we’ll see further on), which then does something completely different than what you were trying to do.

That explains why some people are looking for ways to disable set aside tabs in Edge, but as it turns out, Microsoft has NOT provided a way to remove the set aside tabs functionality (yet).

Whether or not you like the ability to set aside tabs in Edge is of course entirely up to you, but in order to make that decision, let’s take a look at what it’s all about.

Set Tabs Aside in Edge – A Closer Look

The place where you need to look when you want to set tabs aside in Edge is the top-left corner of your Edge window. There you will find two icons, one to set tabs aside and another to re-open tabs you’ve set aside.

How to set tabs aside for later in microsoft edge

If you hover over these icons with your mouse, a small help text will appear to reveal the function of the icons. In the screenshot above, I have three tabs open with websites about dog obedience training, just for the sake of the example. I don’t know if you’re a dog person or not, but let’s just assume you are doing your research on the topic, when your spouse comes along and wants to take a look at some patio furniture together with you.

Of course you can open a few new tabs while doing your research on patio furniture, but eventually you’ll end up with a messy bunch of open tabs.

So you click the icon to set tabs aside in Edge (indicated with the arrow in the image above) and Microsoft Edge will set your current open tabs aside and start with a new tab for you.

How to set tabs aside for later in microsoft edge

At first sight it will look like the tabs you were working on have simply disappeared, but in reality, they are stored and ready for you whenever you want to continue doing what you were doing before. But right now, you have a blank new tab, ready to start digging into patio furniture.

After a while, your Edge window might contain a new set of open tabs (about patio furniture), and at some point you might want to interrupt (but not completely terminate) the job at hand and set THESE tabs aside as well.

When that happens, simply click the icon to set tabs aside in Edge again (see image below) and Edge will set them aside for you.

How to set tabs aside for later in microsoft edge

Once again, Edge will revert to a stat with a new, blank tab for you to get started with your next task.

Reload Tabs You’ve Set Aside

In order to reload (some of) the tabs you’ve set aside, simply click the leftmost icon in your top-left Microsoft Edge window.

How to set tabs aside for later in microsoft edge

As you can see in the image below, Microsoft Edge will then show you thumbnail images of all the tabs you’ve set aside previously.

You’ll also notice that they are conveniently organized together in groups (one group for each “set aside” operation).

How to set tabs aside for later in microsoft edge

In the image above you can also see an indication about when you set your tabs aside (e.g. 4 minutes ago, 16 minutes ago, . ), but if there are older sets of tabs that you’ve set aside longer ago, they will also show up here with an indication of the time.

To reload your tabs and pick up where you left off, simply click the “Restore tabs” link next to the group of tabs you want to re-open.

How to set tabs aside for later in microsoft edge

You can also open a single tab from within a tab group, rather than the entire group if you want. In order to do so, just click the thumbnail image of the page you want to re-open.

How to set tabs aside for later in microsoft edge

Or, if you decide you no longer need a certain group of tabs, click the “x” next to the corresponding tab group.

Click the 3 dots next to the group of tabs to add the tabs to your favorites or share them via e-mail or other apps (depending on your configuration).

Disable Set Aside Tabs in Edge

I’ve mentioned above that some people are looking for ways to disable the set aside tabs in Edge feature. I’ve heard quite a number of people complain that the icon to set tabs aside in Edge is too close near the leftmost tab. When they click to activate the leftmost tab, they accidently hit the icon to set tabs aside in Edge. That is why voices arise to include the possibility be able to disable “set aside tabs” in Edge.

Up until now however, there are no reasons to believe yet that the ability to disable the set tabs aside feature will be included in any of the next updates .

If you’ve enjoyed this article or found it useful, I’d appreciate it if you’d let me know by clicking the Like (or Share) button below. Thank you!

Microsoft’s new Edge browser, based on the Chromium project, is set to release on January 15, and when it does, it’ll be missing a few features, such as history syncing and extension syncing. Another thing that’ll be missing, for those using the current version of Edge, is the ability to set tabs aside to use later. But if you’re using this feature in the current version of Edge.

As spotted by Techdows, if you install the stable version of Microsoft Edge – which is only available through unofficial methods – on Windows 10, your tabs set aside will be available as favorites. Upon launching the updated browser, when you right-click one of the tabs at the top of the screen, there’ll be a menu item saying you can find your tabs set aside in Favorites. There, you can find them in a dedicated folder to tabs set aside, with each set of tabs grouped into a different folder. Since the new version of Edge will be added to Windows 10 as soon as it’s generally available, displacing the current version, it makes sense for user content to be preserved somehow.

How to set tabs aside for later in microsoft edge

On the favorites page, you’ll also see a message saying you can’t currently set tabs aside in Edge. Microsoft has talked about the possibility of bringing some features over from the current version of Edge, and during a session at Build this year, no guarantee was given that the ability to set tabs aside would be among them. However, the text on this page could suggest it is happening at some point.

It’s worth noting that the Canary and Dev channels of the new Edge have an interesting new feature called Collections, which can gather websites, images, and notes into user-created groups, which isn’t too far off from how setting tabs aside worked. With the ability to add all the current tabs to a collection, for instance, the functionality would be nearly identical to how it works in the current version of the browser. It could end up being something completely different, though.

A browser extension that makes it easy for you to hide some of your tabs without actually closing them, so you can visit them at a later time

What’s new in Tabs aside for Chrome 2.0.5.0:

  • Fixed context menu position on scrolling

Read the full changelog

Most users end up with a plethora of open tabs whenever they research a product, look for reviews or simply browse the web to pass the time.

Tabs aside for Chrome is an extension designed to help you save some of these tabs and revisit them later on, rather than closing them and forgetting about them.

Microsoft Edge-inspired addon

This addon was inspired by a function in Microsoft’s Edge browser that offers users the possibility to save tabs in collections that can later be opened without too much effort.

Similarly, Tabs aside is meant to instantly hide your current tabs so you can re-access them at a later time. Just as is the case with Microsoft Edge, you can assign custom names to these groups or you can just leave the current date as the default title.

Effortless method to save tabs for later access

You can configure the extension to automatically put tabs aside, for later analysis, with only a single click on its dedicated icon. Alternatively, you can define the action to be taken from its main menu, either to put tabs aside or to restore them.

You can switch from a thumbnail view to a title only version, depending on how many tabs you want to save.

When restoring tabs within the main window of Chrome, the standard behavior is to instantly remove them from the tab collection. If you want to hold on to them a little longer, there is the option to keep them in the list and restore them at the same time.

To sum things up

All in all, Tabs aside offers you a hassle-free method to save some of the more interesting tabs you come across, especially if you do not want to add them to your browser’s Bookmarks section. No technical skills are required and even novices can start putting tabs aside within seconds.

What are Set Aside Tabs and how do I work with them in Microsoft Edge?

There’s likely no individual program on your computer that is used more often than your Web browser, whether you’re on a Mac, Windows computer or even a Linux system or Android phone. As the Web has exploded in diversity it’s become extraordinarily valuable and important to people. So Web browsers are front and center. Microsoft‘s solution? Dump Internet Explorer and start again with the slick, fast, powerful Microsoft Edge.

Problem is, most people don’t explore their tools, so while Microsoft Edge is now included as the default Web browser in all Windows 10 systems, I bet few people know what it can do. One of the more interesting ideas in Edge is what you’re asking about: Set Aside Tabs.

Let’s have a look. To start, here’s a typical view in Edge. Notice I have two tabs open, one to MSN.com and the other to my GoFatherhood site:

How to set tabs aside for later in microsoft edge

The very top left two buttons are the Set Aside Tabs area, the leftmost one bringing up the window, and the right button (greyed out in the above screenshot) how you save your current set of tabs into the S.A.T. area. A click on the two overlapping images button (leftmost) and the Set Aside Tabs window appears:

How to set tabs aside for later in microsoft edge

You can see that seven minutes prior I saved three tabs, to Fandango, Hollywood Reporter and Fox Sports, and that nine minutes ago I saved the single tab for Linux.org.

What’s really cool about this is that they’re saved as thumbnails so it’s easy to skim through and find what you want, particularly if you visit sites with lots of big graphics.

There are, however, also some inexplicable bugs in the Set Aside Tabs implementation. One you’ve already seen: sometimes the “set these tabs aside” button is greyed out and inoperable for no obvious reason. The other is shown with the Fox Sports thumbnail above, where it’s just greyed out regions, not a proper thumbnail at all. One hopes that in a dot-release or patch from Microsoft both of these bugs will be quietly squashed!

Notice there are “Restore tabs” and a delete option (the “X”) but there’s also an ellipses. Click on it and you’ll see two additional options:

How to set tabs aside for later in microsoft edge

Very helpful once you get the hang of working with these Set Aside Tabs, because you can open up a set of Web pages related to a specific topic, sweep them into the Set Aside area, then share them with friends or colleagues, add them to your favorites with a single click or restore them all – even days later!

That’s important to know, actually. Set Aside Tabs are sticky, so if you quit MS Edge, if you reboot, if you go on vacation for a week, when you go back into that area of the browser, they’ll all still be sitting, ready to use. Handy, really.

What’s most important to realize is that this sweeps all your current tabs into the Set Aside area, not just the current page that you’re viewing. For example, note below that I have three tabs open and that I’m viewing the MSN home page:

How to set tabs aside for later in microsoft edge

A click on the “set aside these tabs” button (top left) and I’ll be looking at a blank page:

How to set tabs aside for later in microsoft edge

Where’d they go? All three are now neatly organized in the Set Aside area:

How to set tabs aside for later in microsoft edge

That’s it. It’s a nice way to be able to hide everything, focus on a single page for a while, then restore all of your tabs, perhaps differentiating classes, or work versus play.

What’s in store for Set Aside Tabs in Microsoft Windows 10 and Microsoft Edge? I don’t know, but I would like to see them keep developing this concept because it’s way more fun and useful than those dull text-only pop-up menus of bookmarks!

How to set tabs aside for later in microsoft edge

Updates usually bring some much-needed features. Windows 10 Creators Update, for example, adds a feature that’s going to help you better organize your tabs in Microsoft Edge. With the “Set Aside” feature you’ll finally be able to declutter your browser and only use the ones you need at that precise moment without losing a single one.

You can place your tabs somewhere else so that you can continue working or browsing without distractions. The tabs you set aside will be available even if you close Edge or restart your computer. Keep reading to find out how you can use the Set Aside feature in Microsoft Edge and enjoy a cleaner browsing experience.

How to Use the Set Aside Feature in Microsoft Edge

Having a lot of tabs open is something you just can’t avoid but try to anyway. You may be doing research on something and need those tabs open but not so much that you end up bookmarking them.

If you have Windows 10 v1703, you’re going to notice two new buttons when you open Edge. Those buttons are at the top-right corner called “Tabs you have set aside” and “Set these tabs aside.” They are what you’ll be using to take advantage of this great feature.

There is no way to only set aside one tab in particular. It’s an all or nothing situation. Once you click on the tab icon with the arrow pointing left, all of the tabs you have in that window will appear like in the image below. To see the tabs you’ve already saved, click on the double-tab icon to the left.

How to set tabs aside for later in microsoft edge

What Happens After the Tabs Are Saved?

What happens when Edge saves all of your tabs? Edge won’t close automatically, but instead it will show you a new window with a new tab.

Let’s say you want to recover all the tabs you saved in a window you had open two hours ago. When you go to the Tabs you’ve set aside on a page (depending on how many times you’ve saved your tabs), you’ll see a certain amount of rows that preview the tabs you had open.

To the right and below the last tab preview you’ll see an option that says “Restore tabs.” Click on that option, and Edge will open all the tabs. There will also be an X that will close all the tabs in that row.

How to set tabs aside for later in microsoft edge

What you can do if you need to recover certain tabs is click on the “Tabs you have set aside” button, and click on the tab you want to recover. That tab will pop right back out.

You’ll know you have tabs aside because the “Set these tabs aside” button will change color indicating that you’ve saved some. Keep in mind that once you recover a set of tabs, they will disappear from the “Tabs you’ve set aside” option, and if you accidentally close Edge, you’ll lose those tabs.

Conclusion

Setting tabs aside in Microsoft Edge is definitely a useful feature. It will help you save important tabs for later and clear up that tab clutter. It would have been better if you could save certain tabs and not all of them, but hopefully this feature will be added in the near future. Do you find the feature useful? This tutorial covers how to set tabs aside in Microsoft Edge in Windows 10 PC. Using this feature, you can hide tabs of the current session and then access them later. So for example, when you have opened too many tabs in Microsoft Edge and want to close all those tabs to start a new session, then before closing all those tabs, you can put those tabs aside and then start a new session. Whenever you want to use the tabs of previous session, you can restore all those tabs easily.

This feature is currently available in the preview build of Windows 10. However, it will be available publicly when you upgrade Windows 10 with the upcoming Creators update. If you are already using preview build and aren’t aware of this feature, then I will tell how to set tabs aside and restore them in Microsoft Edge.

How To Set Tabs Aside In Microsoft Edge In Windows 10 PC?

Step 1: Open Microsoft Edge using the Taskbar icon or Search box.

Step 2: Open two or three tabs. You will notice that two icons are visible at the top left corner in Microsoft Edge. These two icons are known as: Set tabs aside and Tabs you’ve set aside.

The first icon (icon with a back arrow or icon pointing to the left) is used to set all the current tabs aside. Click that option and it will put all the tabs aside. After that, you can open more tabs and continue the work.

When you want to restore all those tabs, click Tabs you’ve set aside icon. This will open a pop-up in which you will see all the hidden tabs. Thumbnails of hidden tabs are visible. To restore a particular tab, click the thumbnail of that particular tab and it will be restored. Or else, click on Restore tabs option and it will open all those tabs again.

How to set tabs aside for later in microsoft edge

Apart from restoring a particular or all tabs, there are two more options that you can use. You can Add tabs to Favorites (or bookmarks) and can also share tabs with others. Tabs can be shared using Twitter, email, Facebook, etc. Basically, only the links of tabs are shared so that people can access the webpages shared by you. Use three dots icon visible just next to Restore tabs icon to access these two options.

The Verdict:

Set tabs aside is quite an interesting feature in Microsoft Edge that is helpful to keep a particular session and then restore that session in Microsoft Edge anytime. Just use the button to set tabs aside and later you can use the second button to access aside tabs and restore a particular or all the tabs in a click.

Microsoft’s new Chromium-based Edge browser is set to become available early next year, and while the company has been working tirelessly on its new overhauled browser, many features from the classic browser, such as set aside tabs, Inking, and Cortana integration will be absent. As to how the company planned to handle tabs set aside in the legacy version of Edge when the new browser officially takes over has remained a mystery, however Techdows reports that it will save them as Favorites for users to open later.

Users on the stable version of the new Edge should be able to access these saved tabs by right-clicking on the browser tab and clicking “Find tabs you’ve set aside in Favorites”. These tabs will be saved into a dedicated folder, with subfolders for each of the groups of tabs that have been set aside.

Microsoft has remain mostly quiet in regards to certain legacy features such as set aside tabs, but has pointed out that it’s looking into incorporating it in the future. For now, though, users can organize various groups of webpages into an experimental feature called “Collections”.

Microsoft’s new Edge overhaul is expected to be generally available beginning on January 15. The browser will initially be missing various features such as history syncing and ARM64 support, although those are expected to be added at a later date. The release candidate of the new Edge can also be downloaded in the Beta channel, but the Set Aside to Favorites feature is only available in the leaked stable release, not in beta.

What do you think of the absence of set aside tabs in the new Edge? Is this something you can live without, or should the company focus its resources into bringing it as soon as possible?

Tabs Aside for Chrome, Firefox, and Edge allows you to save tabs for later use.

Sometimes tabs you accumulate and use often may not be important enough for a bookmark creation. Tabs Aside, just like the discontinued Classic Microsoft Edge Tabs Aside feature, gives you the option to set those tabs aside, permitting you to come back to them later.

One thing to note, if you set Tabs Aside to ‘set tabs aside on the extension icon click’ from the options section, you will need to use Alt + P or right-click to re-open the pane. During testing, we did not remember this and got stuck without access to the interface.

Auto Dark mode
Now you can restore one tab from the collection without removing
Convenient hotkeys

Microsoft has updated its Edge browser for Mac with several new features, bringing “sleeping tabs,” a password generator and monitor, new visual themes, and more.

How to set tabs aside for later in microsoft edge
The “Sleeping tabs” feature aims to improve performance by releasing system resources for inactive or backgrounded tabs. The feature is optional and can be enabled in the browser settings menu.

Meanwhile, the new password generator suggests to users a secure and complex password whenever they sign up to a website for the first time or attempt to change an existing password. Edge also now notifies users if a password has been compromised in a data breach, which is similar to a feature recently introduced in Apple’s Safari browser.

Elsewhere, 24 new themes offer visual customizations that affect various parts of the browser interface, including tabs, tab pages, and the address bar. The Edge development team has partnered with Xbox to offer themes from Microsoft franchises, including Halo, Gears, Forza, Flight Simulator, Sea of Thieves, Grounded, Ori and the Will of the Wisps, and more.

In addition, sidebar search is now generally available in Microsoft Edge. While browsing web pages, users can highlight a word, right click and search. A side panel will open with search results so they can get quick answers without having to navigate away from your current page.

One of our most loved features, called Automatic Profile Switching, makes its way to macOS this month. I like to keep my work browsing and personal browsing activities separate, and profile switching makes it so easy. Now macOS provides the ability to switch sites that authenticate with a user’s work profile so it’s easier to toggle between work and personal browsing. To get started, check with your local admin if automatic profile switch is enabled for your organization. If so, sign in with your Microsoft personal and work accounts and you’re ready to go.

Microsoft Edge has won over many users with its frequent feature updates and tight integration of Microsoft’s design language with the design language of macOS. Tab syncing features were recently added, and it was also quick to offer native support for Apple Silicon, bringing optimized performance to Macs with the M1 chip. The browser can be downloaded from the Microsoft Edge website.

Microsoft Edge (not the Chromium one) has a cool feature that lets you set tabs aside. Basically, it saves your session and lets you restore it at a later time.

How to set tabs aside for later in microsoft edge

Tabs Aside is a web extension that can do the same for Firefox. The add-on needs to be setup before it can be used for the purpose.

How to set tabs aside for later in microsoft edge

Click on the toolbar icon to get started. A side-panel opens and the setup wizard explains how the add-on works. Tabs Aside saves tabs as bookmarks in its folder. Every session is saved in its own sub-folder. You may choose to create a new folder called ‘Tabs Aside’ or create a custom folder.

How to set tabs aside for later in microsoft edge

The next step in the wizard lets you choose the session saving behavior. You can pick from three options. The default setting is “Active Sessions” that updates bookmarks as you open or close tabs, and each session is saved it is own window.

The “Tabs Aside 2” method disables Windowed mode. Or you can choose the “Like Microsoft Edge” option, that disables both Windowed mode and Active Sessions.

Note: The current iteration of the extension is called Tabs Aside 3 on GitHub.

How to set aside tabs in Tabs Aside

Click on the toolbar icon, it has three options. Select the Tabs Aside option, it opens a new window and begins saving each tab to the session. When it’s done, a side-panel opens on the left edge of the screen. This is the “Tabs you’ve set aside panel”, technically it’s the bookmark folder’s title.

Note: If you have a lot of tabs, you may notice a slight delay in the process.

How to set tabs aside for later in microsoft edge

Let’s call this sidebar the sessions panel, because this is where you can view, restore or search sessions. Select the restore option next to a session, and Tabs Aside opens a new window and restores your tabs. It uses lazy loading (only loads the first tab), so don’t worry about the browser or the add-on using up too much memory or slowing down the browser while tabs are loading.

How to set tabs aside for later in microsoft edge

Sessions that you’ve saved remain even after you have restored them (since they are saved as bookmarks). Clicking the three dot menu next to a session lets you rename or remove the session. Click on the arrow icon in the left edge of the screen. This makes the add-on list all tabs that were set aside during the selected session. The list displays the title of each tab. You may click on a title to switch to the corresponding tab. Right-click on a listing to copy it’s URL to the clipboard.

Once you’ve named a session, it’s title will also be displayed in the toolbar icon’s menu.

Options Page

The Tabs Aside settings allows you set the session’s root folder, enable or disable Active Sessions, open sessions in a new window, lazy loading. You can change the way tab closing behavior is handled: remove from session or set aside. The add-on does not set aside pinned tabs by default, but there is an option that lets it save pinned tabs.

Windows 10 Tip: Keep track of your tabs with Microsoft Edge
How to set tabs aside for later in microsoft edge

It’s easy to lose track of what’s in your tabs, especially if you have many tabs open from the same site that all look alike. The new tab preview bar and “Set these tabs aside” features in Microsoft Edge with the Windows 10 Creators Update allow you to easily manage and navigate your tabs.

Keep track of your tabs with the new tab preview bar:

The new tab preview bar gives you a visual preview of every tab you have open without leaving your page. Quickly manage your tabs using the preview bar without waiting for the pages to load by clicking on this icon next to the open tabs. You can also scroll through the previews with touch, mouse wheel, or a touchpad.

Microsoft Edge makes it easy to sweep aside all the tabs you have open into a collection that you can restore at any time. Just click the “Set these tabs aside” button on the upper left-hand corner of your browser. Click the button next to that to see tabs you’ve set aside, then click “Restore tabs” to jump back in.

How to set tabs aside for later in microsoft edge

O ne of the most useful features of the legacy Edge browser was Set Tabs Aside. Although, it annoyed many people, including me, who accidentally clicked on the button and could do nothing as all of their tabs disappeared in no time.

When Microsoft started working on the new Edge Chromium browser, many believed that the Set Tabs Aside feature would make a return. But it seems that Microsoft had other (read better) plans. That’s why it’s working on Edge Collections, which is currently being tested by Insiders.

Microsoft Edge developer Candice Poon took to her Twitter account to reveal a helpful feature that has been added to the Edge Collections. Users can access it by right-clicking on a tab in the latest Insider preview builds of Edge Dev and Canary channels.

Are you an Edge Collections user? Update your Canary/Dev and right click on a tab. You might see something new 👀 pic.twitter.com/SL7PsXUmyr

The feature does exactly what its name suggests. It instantly puts all your open tabs into a new Collection and unclutters your browser window.

For the uninitiated, Edge Collections lets you group different tabs and web pages and save them for later use. For example, all the shortlisted items from your exhausting online window shopping session can go into one collection.

You can add copied text, images, and notes to your Edge Collection as well. Furthermore, Microsoft has included an option to send the Collections data directly to MS Word and Excel apps.

Microsoft is doing everything to make Edge Chromium compete against Google Chrome. The web browser was made generally available for Windows 10 and other operating systems earlier this year. However, a recently published study on browser privacy might make it hard for Edge Chromium to get into people’s good books.
