How to set up and get started with your synology nas

When buying pre-built Synology network-attached storage (NAS), you’re also acquiring a license to the manufacturer’s OS, DiskStation Manager. Much like a new installation of Windows 10, there are a number of steps you should take after setting everything up to ensure you’re going to have a great NAS experience. Here are some handy tips to get you started with the best NAS for home in DiskStation Manager.

Buy some hard drives

If you haven’t already done so, you’ll need some hard drives installed inside the NAS to be able to use the device. We’ve rounded up the best and most reliable hard drives for Synology NAS that will help you pick the right drives for your enclosure. Once you’ve installed some storage, you’ll be able to install Synology Assistant on your PC and set up DSM OS.

Set up Synology QuickConnect

Synology has a feature called QuickConnect, which allows you to connect to the NAS at home without using any IP addresses. The servers at Synology will communicate with your NAS through a Synology account, allowing you to maintain a connection even if your ISP refreshes your external IP. It’s also super easy to locate it on the local network if you need to connect a new device to the NAS.

Setting up QuickConnect is simple too. It’s part of the initial Synology NAS installation process but is an optional step. If you failed to set it up during the installation of your NAS, simply open up the Control Panel and choose “QuickConnect.” You’ll then need to enable the service, create a Synology account and give the NAS a name. The handy wizard will walk you through a few steps.

Configure DSM OS

Like most electronic devices, a Synology NAS allows you to manage power settings, configuring when the NAS will wake up from hibernation, how bright LEDs are, and how aggressive the fan(s) spin to keep the internals cool. Everything can be manipulated on a single screen, which makes doing so an absolute breeze.

Fire up the Control Panel and select “Hardware & Power.” Next, you’ll be greeted by four tabs’ worth of settings.

General

General contains the following:

  • Power Recovery — Set whether the NAS should auto-start on power failure or LAN activity.
  • Beep Control — Decide when the NAS will perform a system audio sound.
  • Fan Speed — Configure how quiet you wish the fan(s) to operate.
  • LED Brightness — Set just how bright (or dim) the LEDs are for status indicators.

Power schedule

Power schedules allow you to set just when the NAS will start up or shut down. This is handy if you use the NAS in an office or at home and only require access at certain parts of the day. For example, you could set power schedules so the NAS would boot up at 7 a.m. and then shut down at 6 p.m. This not only saves on wear and tear but also power.

HDD hibernation

Hibernating your drives is a great decision if you don’t require drive access all the time, but don’t fancy having the entire system shut down to save power. Not only can you configure internal drives to go to sleep after a certain time of inactivity, but also external HDDs too.

Note that some apps and services you run on the NAS will override these settings and not allow your HDDs to hibernate. Plex is one such service.

Should you have an uninterruptable power supply (UPS), Synology allows you to hook up the NAS to a UPS via USB to have it continue operation or perform a safe shutdown should a power loss occur.

Download Synology’s mobile apps

Synology has a collection of mobile apps available for Android and iOS. Depending on what you wish to do, you can access files, photos, stream music, check surveillance cameras, and more. One great ability with the NAS and a smartphone is the automatic upload of all your photos — just like you can on OneDrive and Google Drive.

Back up Windows 10

Backing up your Windows 10 installation regularly is a good practice. In fact, it’s such a great idea that we highly recommend everyone does it. Even we have those odd times when Windows corrupts itself and requires a fresh install. You’ll run the risk of losing everything if you don’t have a backup at hand.

Overview

The Synology Disk Station Manager (DSM) is the Operating System (OS) that runs on your Synology unit. This guide will cover the basic steps to setup your Synology device and complete the initial configuration settings of your DSM.

1. Synology NAS configuration

  • Install all drives into the bay slots of your unit
  • Position NAS in desired location
  • Connect NAS to power
  • Connect to NAS to network (most likely via LAN cable from NAS unit to switch or router)

2. Power on Synology NAS

  • Power on unit and you should hear an initial beep after a few minutes

3. Download required files

  • From the Synology Download Center
    • Select your model and download:
      • The latest Synology Disk Station Manager (DSM) for your model
      • Synology Assistant
      • Synology Download Center – DSM and Synology Assistant

      4. Install Synology Assistant

      This is just a simple wizard-based installation – follow the prompts to complete the install

      5. Use Synology Assistant to ‘find’ your NAS Station

      With your Synology unit powered on and connected to your network it will likely pick up an IP from your router or other device that is performing DHCP functionality.

      The Synology Assistant is capable of scanning your network and locating all Synology devices allowing you to interact with the NAS to perform some initial configurations.

      6. Install the Synology Disk Station Manager

      Using the Synology Assistant locate your NAS, right click, and click Install.

      Specify your network settings

      While the Wizard seems to indicate that DHCP is preferred you should strongly consider setting a static IP. A lot of the functionality that a Synology device offeres works best with a static IP set. Additionally, if you ever plan to access your Synology device externally (ex. while you are away from home) then you will have to set a static IP here.

      Specify your Update preferences. Note that if you elect Install Automatically that new versions of DSM will be automatically applied and your NAS will reboot. For most home users this option is fine. DSM Update & Maintenance

      QuickConnect is Synology’s proprietary solution for accessing your NAS device externally of your network without having to deal with port forwarding or DDNS. You definitely don’t need QuickConnect, but it does make accessing your NAS a little easier away from home so feel free to create one now. Synology QuickConnect Setup – Create Account

      7. Verify System Information

      Now is a good time to review the system configuration to ensure everything is reporting health and as expected

      Verify that DSM sees all drives that you have installed and that they are reporting healthy

      8. Create your system volume

      Using the Storage Manager configure your drives into a system volume. This is where you will configure the drives into your desired RAID configuration. If you haven’t done so already I suggest taking a look at the Synology RAID Calculator. It provides a quick and easy interface that makes RAID decisions pretty simple.

      Note on SHR : SHR is Synology’s propietary RAID-like solution. It most closely resembles RAID 5 in usage but has a few differences. My research into this solution (which is configured via the quick option) is that it is best leveraged in situations where your Synology device does not contain matching drives. So, if you’ve just installed a few extra drives you had lying around, SHR might be a better solution for you. If you have matching hardware though, you will likely be better served by RAID.

      Parity Consistency Check is currently running on Volume 1 and may affect overall system performance.

      9. Create a Shared Folder

      A shared folder will exists on the volume you just created and serves as the content space that you or your users will interact with. For example, you could create a Videos Shared Folder and give yourself read/write access and the rest of the users in your household read only access. You could go on to create an additional Shared Folder, Private and give only yourself read/write access to that location.

      Provide a Name, Description, and configure settings. The wizard will walk you through this process or you can view me go through it in the linked video above.

      10. Test access to your new Shared Folder

      From a MAC device you should now be able use Finder to navigate to your Synology device and see the shared folder. If the user on the MAC has the correct permissions they will be able to now read/write to this location.

      From a Windows device you can open a run command and type: \\IP_of_NAS_DEVICE\Name_of_shared_folder

      Alternatively you can map a drive in Windows from an explorer window to add a more permanent drive letter to your new shared folder location:

      11. The skies the limit

      This is just a brief intro into the most basic configuration essentials of your Synology Disk Station Manager.

      In previous tutorials, we looked at getting started with the Synology DS920+. We also explored how you can start and shut down your Synology NAS. However, to make those posts concise, we never looked at setting up a new Synology NAS. We remedy that situation in this post on setting up the Synology DS920+ NAS.

      You first access your Synology NAS device by visiting the Synology Find site in your web browser. If all goes well, and if you have connected your cables properly, you should see the Find Your Synology NAS screen in your browser, as shown below.

      Do note that the Status shows as Not installed, highlighted in red . This means you need to install the Synology operating system on your NAS, and we will learn more about this operating system soon. For now, we need to click the Connect button to proceed.

      You’ll see the Synology End User License Agreement window, shown below.

      Place a checkmark next to the I have read and agreed to the terms of the EULA option, and click the Next button. You will next see a similar-looking Synology Privacy Statement window. To proceed, you will click the Continue button.

      Next, you will see the Synology Welcome screen, shown below.

      You’ll need to click the Set up button to proceed.

      You’ll next see the Install DiskStation Manager screen, shown below. The DiskStation Manager, often abbreviated to DSM is the proprietary Synology operating system that resides on your NAS device.

      By default, the latest version of DSM is downloaded and installed, but you can choose the Manual Install link and choose to install a previous version. We decided to go with the defaults and clicked the Install Now button.

      The DSM install may show you a warning message window that warns you about the deletion of any existing data on the hard disks inserted within the Synology NAS (Adding hard disks physically to the NAS was explained in the Getting started with the Synology DS920+ post). You will have to accept the warning and proceed.

      The installation takes around 10 minutes, and you can see the percentage-wise progress of the process.

      You are next prompted to create an Administrator account for your Synology NAS. This is a local account that you will use to sign into the Synology DSM interface.

      You are now asked to create a new Synology account, or sign in to your existing Synology account so as to be able to use the Synology QuickConnect feature.

      Next, you are provided an option to drag a shortcut to your desktop that uses the QuickConnect feature to easily access your DSM. Do note that you can still use the Synology Find site option to connect to your Synology DSM, if you select an option we discuss next.

      You now see the option to enabling sharing of your Synology device’s network location. We accepted this option and clicked the Go button.

      Now, you get to the DSM interface, but there’s one more screen to tackle. This one tells you that Smart Updates will take care of updating your DSM. Note this is not an option for you to choose, but just some information provided to you. You click the Got It button to finally work with the DistStation Manager OS from Synology. You will also have to accept more agreements to send your device data to Synology.

      Finally, your Synology DS920+ is ready to be used with the DSM operating system installed. In our next tutorial, we will look at setting up your storage.

      QuickConnect is indeed quick to set up

      A Synology NAS’s primary purpose is to provide a central storage space that is accessible to everyone on a private network. Though every once in a while, you need to access your files stored on the NAS when you’re outside your home network. Synology makes it easy to do with its built-in utility called QuickConnect. It lets you have a reliable connection with your NAS no matter where you are — and all it requires is a minimal setup. Here’s how you can get started with QuickConnect on your Synology NAS.

      Steps to set up QuickConnect on your Synology DiskStation

      QuickConnect needs your Synology web account connected to the NAS in order to work. So, you’ll have to do that before allowing access to your NAS over the internet.

      1. When logged into DSM as an admin, head to Control Panel and click on Synology Account under the Services tab.
      2. On the next screen, click on the link against Synology Account. In the pop-up window, fill in your account details if you already have one or sign up for a new account.
      3. After you’re done signing in, click on the same link in step 2 once again and allow your NAS to connect to the signed-in account.

      And you’re done with this part. Now you can jump to setting up QuickConnect using the following steps:

      1. In Control Panel, you’ll see an option called External Access under Connectivity. Click on it.
      2. Under the QuickConnect tab on the next page, check the box against Enable QuickConnect.
      3. Now you need to create a QuickConnect ID, which is basically a unique username that is linked to both your Synology NAS and account. You’ll be using this address to connect to your NAS over the internet, so make it easy to remember (but not easy to guess).
      4. Right underneath that, you’ll see the Advanced Settings button. You can go in there to allow the NAS to create port forwarding rules, toggle on or off the QuickConnect Relay service, and pick the apps you want to have access to over the internet.
      5. Once you’re satisfied with your choices, hit Apply. It’ll take a few seconds for the changes to reflect, and then you’ll be good to go.

      If you ever want to disable QuickConnect from your Synology NAS, repeat steps 1 and 2, and just uncheck the Enable QuickConnect box.

      How to use QuickConnect to access your Synology NAS remotely

      For instance, if your QuickConnect ID is xyz123, the direct link to access your NAS over the internet will look something like quickconnect.to/xyz123 or xyz123.quickconnect.to. You can bookmark either of these links to directly access your DSM (or any other service that you’ve permitted) through a desktop browser. After this point, the login process is just like what you get on your local network. Depending on the internet speed on both ends, the loading times for various services will naturally feel a tad slower, but it isn’t something that’d bother you much.

      It’s even easier to access your NAS remotely using Synology’s first-party Android apps. On the login page, instead of and entering your NAS’s local IP address, you can simply punch in xyz123 in this case and go with the usual login flow. With your QuickConnect ID, the apps will automatically connect to your NAS whether or not you’re on the local network. This should come in handy if you use Synology Drive and would like it to have remote access, just like Google Drive. Do note that QuickConnect doesn’t allow remote access to any third-party packages installed on your NAS.

      Understanding those advanced settings

      By default, QuickConnect will open a handful of ports to establish a direct connection between your remote client device, say your phone, and the NAS. This doesn’t require manual intervention as long as UPnP is enabled on your router. However, most people like to keep UPnP turned off to keep their private network safe from external threats.

      In that case, QuickConnect falls back to Synology’s relay service (which you must keep enabled in step 4 above), wherein a Synology server facilitates your connection to your NAS. The company says that the transfers both from and to the server are encrypted to maintain data integrity. But it all comes down to how much you trust an external server with your data. In my opinion, using QuickConnect should be fine for some non-sensitive data as long as you have the necessary safeguards. You can go through Synology’s white paper on QuickConnect if you want to dive further into the subject.

      Some best practices when using QuickConnect

      Under advanced settings, you have the option to pick the services you want to allow on QuickConnect. This way, you can choose only those services you’re going to use over the internet instead of giving access to the entire DSM.

      It also helps if the NAS user account you use for remote access doesn’t have admin privileges. So even if your account credentials are compromised somehow, a bad actor won’t be able to take over your NAS’s control completely. And it’s always good to have two-factor authentication on your accounts; Synology lets you enable TOTP (with apps like Google Authenticator) for user accounts on your NAS through their respective profiles.

      There’s a good chance that you only temporarily need to use your NAS from outside your home, like when you’re on a trip. In such cases, you can later turn off QuickConnect to limit any unnecessary online exposure. Though bear in mind that doing this will result in Synology apps on your phone set up with a QuickConnect ID failing to connect even on the local network.

      QuickConnect is undoubtedly a nifty tool that works perfectly for beginners or just about anyone who doesn’t want to fiddle with all the complicated network settings. You’re going to love it when Synology Photos automatically backs up your photos even when you’re away from your home like it’s with Google Photos. And if you’ve been holding off on getting yourself a Synology NAS, you can consider starting with the rather inexpensive DiskStation DS220+.

      A lot of people ask us about our backup system. What are you doing for secure storage and back up and what is your workflow regarding data backup?

      The question is justified, because we produce several GB of data on image and film material. We feel quite strongly about data backup, as should we all.

      It is quite simple, we all know how valuable photos are to us. That’s why we decided on a 2-step backup. We have been working with this setup for several years.

      But what is a Synology DiskStation or a NAS?

      DiskStation is the name for Synology’s Network Attached Storage (NAS) devices. You can integrate a NAS into your home network (or as we do with a service provider) and use it as central network storage. The advantages of a NAS are the extensive backup and storage possibilities of data. In addition, there are many applications from Synology and third-party providers. These range from simple applications such as image and document management to complex business applications. We mainly use the NAS as data storage for our images and daily business documents.

      Until the end of August 2018 we have stored everything on the DS 1512+ with 5 pieces à 4TB hard disks.

      We are digital nomads and we live in our SUV and soon our new car. So we can’t just place the Synology at home and work with it. Our Synology is located in a data center in Aachen at our service provider and hosting partner Honds IT GmbH. Synology is connected with a fixed IP address. So we can access our system from anywhere in the world.

      Recently we changed to the DS 1618+ disk station. It is equipped with 6 pieces à 12 TB Seagate IronWolf hard disks.

      In this series of video’s we take a look at how you perform a basic setup and configuration of a Synology, Network Attached Storage (NAS) device. This series of videos was created to try and offer a reference point to assist you in the setup of your own NAS.

      Having already installed a copy of Synology’s Disk Station Manager (DSM) onto our NAS. In this video, we take a quick tour of the main elements that make up the user interface of the DSM. This is to familiarise ourselves with the location of settings and functions, in preparation for future videos where we begin to configure the NAS.

      The Main Menu

      When selected, the Main menu will display any applications that have been installed onto your NAS. While these applications will have been installed via Package Centre. The Main menu acts as a quick way to find and load an application.

      Package Centre is Synology’s equivalent to an App Store. This is where you can find and install either Synology designed or third party applications. When choosing applications to install we prefer to use Synology applications as they will have been better optimised for your hardware.

      Control Panel

      The Control Panel is the location where you will find most of the settings for your NAS. Within Control Panel you can setup file shares, set permissions and adjust settings on your NAS.

      File Station

      File Station is the default file manager built into Disk Station Manager. Within File Station you can access, rename, move or delete files and folders stored on your NAS.

      DSM Help

      Notifications

      Notifications provide basic information about the status of your NAS, and when something changes. These changes can include, if a backup was successful or if a hard drive is about to fail.

      Options

      Option is the person shaped icon that can be found in the top right hand corner of Disk Station Manager. It is used for basic account control and to either log out or reboot your NAS. The settings available within Options are determined by the type of account being used. For example, if you log into the DSM with a standard user account, functions like Restart and Shutdown will not be available.

      Search

      Search as the name suggests, provides you with basic search functionality for your NAS.

      Widgets

      Widgets are small application windows that sit on the desktop of Disk Station Manager. While limited in their scope they can be useful to monitor your NAS.

      Using Synology and Backblaze together lets you get the most out of your DiskStation while accessing the benefits of the cloud. Setting it up is a simple, straightforward process—just a few minutes and you’re set ongoing. And, at a quarter of the price compared to other cloud providers, Backblaze B2 Cloud Storage is one of the most affordable ways to add cloud sync and backup to your NAS.

      To help you take advantage of these benefits, we’re sharing a step by step guide on connecting your Synology NAS to Backblaze B2. Big picture, there are two steps you need to take to set up your DiskStation with Backblaze B2:

      1. How to Set Up Your Backblaze B2 Account

      If you already have a Backblaze B2 account, feel free to skip ahead to the next section. Otherwise, you can sign up for an account here and get started with 10GB of storage for free.

      2. How to Set Up a Bucket, Application Key ID, and Application Key

      Once you’ve signed up for a Backblaze B2 Account, you’ll need to create a bucket, Application Key ID, and Application Key. This may sound like a lot, but all you need are a few clicks, a couple names, and less than a minute!

      How to Set Up Synology Cloud Sync With Backblaze B2

      Now you’re ready to set up your DiskStation with Backblaze B2 sync support. You’ll need to make sure the Cloud Sync application is installed on your DiskStation. Once you’re ready, you can follow these steps:

      1. Open the DiskStation Management interface in your web browser.
      2. Install Cloud Sync v2.1.0 or later from the Package Center, if it’s not already installed.
      3. Click on the Main Menu.
      4. Click on Cloud Sync.
      5. Click the + button to create a new connection to Backblaze B2.
      6. Select Backblaze B2 from the list of cloud providers.

      7. Enter the Application Key ID, Application Key, and bucket name you’ll be using for the sync. This Application Key needs to have full read/write permissions for the bucket or section of the bucket the Synology will access. The bucket is the container that holds the DiskStation files you’d like to sync.

      8. Select the folder on the DiskStation you’d like to sync.
      9. Click Next. Confirm the Task Settings and the DiskStation will begin to sync to Backblaze B2.
      10. Task Settings let you specify the folder you’re uploading, and lets you prevent the DiskStation and Backblaze B2 from syncing specific files or subdirectories. You can create exclusions for specific file types, too, as well as file names.

      Setup Instructions

      1. Make sure you have a Philips screw driver available. Open package and slide off cover to reveal hard drive trays
      2. Gently slide hard drive into place, making sure that the data connectors are lined up. Secure with four screws.
      3. Repeat for all other drives, replace cover and secure with two of the smaller screws (should be in a separate package)
      4. Get a hostname or static IP address for the NAS. While there are other ways of connecting, a static IP is the easiest. The MAC address for the device is printed on a sticker near the Ethernet port. If your department runs its own network, contact them and provide the MAC address for your new device. If IMSS is responsible for your network, you’ll want to make up a name for your device like “name.caltech.edu”. Check to see whether your name is currently in use by someone else by following the instructions at http://www.imss.caltech.edu/services/wired-wireless-remote-access/wired-network/check-available-hostnames Then make your request at http://help.caltech.edu (request type IMSS–>Network, Wireless & Remote Access–>Host and Address Requests) and provide the contact information for the individual responsible for the NAS, the building and room of the NAS, and the desired hostname. Remember that the address must be used every two months or IMSS can take it back.
      5. Once you have a static IP address, power on the NAS and connect it to the campus network. Access the NAS by going to a web browser and typing name.caltech.edu, where name is the specific hostname you requested. You can also type the specific IP address (eg. 131.215.226.19). If this doesn’t work, you might have to connect to your NAS using the Synology Assistant application. Download tha application from https://www.synology.com/en-us/support/download on a computer that is connected to the same local network as the NAS. You can then find and connect to your NAS. Once you complete setup steps 6-10, you’ll need to manually assign the correct IP address. Go to Control Panel/Network and select Network Interface in the top menu. Then click LAN, click the Edit button at the top, select manual configuration, and enter the correct IP Address.
      6. Follow the prompts to install the DiskStation software and set up your new disks.
      7. Set up your administrator account. It’s best set the server name to the name you selected in step 4. Make sure the password you select is strong (long, with letters numbers, and special characters). I choose not to share the location of my NAS with Synology
      8. Skip setting up an account with Synology. It’s not really useful in this setup.
      9. You can install the recommended packages now or not, you can always do this later on.
      10. Set up automated updates. This is the best way to stay on top of security patches.

      You should now be in the main control panel of your NAS. You’re ready to administer your NAS. A few things you might want to set up are below.

      Folders

      1. Folders are where you store data and help organize and control access to data. Click on Control Panel and Shared Folder.
      2. Click Create
      3. Pick a name for the folder. I generally leave the other options unchecked, but you can consider these features depending on your specific needs
      4. Set user permissions for the folder. If you don’t have users yet, just click OK

      Groups

      1. Groups are useful if you want to allow access to files or folders for a specific set of users or control how much of the storage space a bunch of users can access. Click on Control Panel and Group.
      2. Click Create
      3. Make a group name
      4. Set the shared folders that this group will have access to
      5. Set the total amount of storage space the group will be able to use. Clicking next will allow the group to use the entire NAS
      6. Set any specific applications that the group can access. The defaults here are usually good.
      7. Assign upload speed limits. Don’t worry about this unless you’ve got a lot of users and bandwidth constraints.
      8. Confirm the settings and click Apply

      User Accounts

      1. Click on Control Panel and User.
      2. Click Create
      3. Enter a Name and pick a strong password (long, with letters numbers, and special characters).
      4. Select the groups the user will be part of (users is the required default group)
      5. Select the folders the user has should have access to. If the group selected in step 4 already has access to folders, this will be noted in the second column.
      6. Set the storage quota for the user. Setting group quotas generally works better. Just click Next to give the user an unlimited quota.
      7. Assign permissions for applications. The defaults will typically be correct in most cases. Click Next
      8. Assign upload speed limits. Don’t worry about this unless you’ve got a lot of users and bandwidth constraints. Click Next
      9. Check to make sure the settings look good and click Apply

      There are a few ways initializing the setup process and we found the easiest to be launching a web browser on a PC connected to the same network as the DiskStation and heading to “find.synology.com”. Providing the NAS is powered on and connected to the network this will auto detect the IP address leased to the device and direct you to it.

    Introduction

    Synology makes a variety of home and business network attached storage devices (NAS) running their Linux-based DiskStation Manager software.

    DigitalOcean Spaces is an object storage service that makes it easy and cost-effective to store and retrieve large amounts of data.

    In this tutorial, we will set up a Synology NAS to back up data to a DigitalOcean Space, using Synology’s Hyper Backup software.

    Prerequisites

    To complete this tutorial, you will need a Synology NAS, with some shared folders or iSCSI LUNs already created.

    You will also need to know the following details about your Space:

    • Access Key
    • Secret Key
    • Server URL
    • Bucket Name

    You can learn how to set up a Space and get all the above information by following our tutorial How To Create a DigitalOcean Space and API Key.

    Once you have your information, log in to your Synology’s web interface as an admin-enabled user, and proceed to Step 1 to install the backup software.

    Step 1 — Installing the Hyper Backup Software

    Upon logging in you’ll see DSM’s desktop interface:

    To install the Hyper Backup software, click on the Package Center icon. The application will open. In the left-hand column of Package Center, select Backup to browse backup apps. Scroll down a bit and you’ll find the Hyper Backup software:

    Click the Install button to install the software. You’ll see some status updates as the application downloads and installs, then the button will change to Open. You may click the button to open Hyper Backup, or you can launch it from the DSM main menu by clicking the main menu button in the upper-left corner of your screen:

    You’ll be shown a list of applications. Click Hyper Backup and the application will open.

    Next, we’ll walk through the steps to set up a backup.

    Step 2 — Setting Up a Backup to Spaces

    When you first open up Hyper Backup, you’ll be presented with a Backup Wizard screen:

    This wizard will take us through five steps in order to configure our first backup.

    First, select S3 Storage to begin setting up the Spaces storage destination. Then click Next to continue.

    This step will set up a connection to Spaces. Let’s walk through the options:

    • S3 Server: select Custom Server URL from the dropdown
    • Server address: should be your Spaces server address, which will be the datacenter region you chose when you created the Space, plus digitaloceanspaces.com . In this case we’ve entered nyc3.digitaloceanspaces.com
    • Access Key: your Spaces access key
    • Secret Key: your Spaces secret key
    • Bucket name: when you click on this form field, the application will attempt to connect to the server and find all available buckets (individual Spaces). Select the appropriate Space from the resulting list, or you can make a new Space if necessary
    • Directory: this is the directory within your Space where the backup data will be stored

    Click Next to continue to the next step.

    You’ll be asked to select the items you’d like to back up. Here we’ve selected the Storage volume. You can also drill down into the directory hierarchy and pick individual subdirectories to back up.

    Hit Next after you’ve made your selection.

    This next step has many options for controlling the compression, encryption, and scheduling of the backup task. First, give the task a name in the Task field. We chose Example Backup in this case.

    Next, you must check the Enable transfer encryption checkbox . Spaces is available over an encrypted HTTPS connection only, so your connection will fail without this box selected.

    The rest of the defaults are fine as they are, but you may want to enable client-side encryption of your backups. This means that your NAS will encrypt the backup files before sending them to Spaces. This is different from the Enable transfer encryption option we just selected, as that option secures the files during transfer only. With client-side encryption, all backup data will be fully encrypted on the Spaces server.

    You may also want to update the backup and integrity check schedules. Pick a time when the added bandwidth and processor load won’t interfere with your own use of the NAS. Typically this is late at night.

    Click Next to go to the final step.

    This step configures backup rotations, where old backups will be systematically deleted to reduce storage usage. The Smart Recycle option is a good default that will retain 24 hours of hourly backups, one month of daily backups, and as many weekly backups as possible before hitting the total number specified in the Number of versions option.

    If you need different options, choose Customized retention and then click Settings to set that up.

    When your rotation settings are all set, click Apply to finish the setup. You will be prompted to back up immediately. If you choose not to, your first backup will happen according to the schedule you set. Otherwise, your backup will start right away. Either way, you’ll now be taken to the main Hyper Backup interface:

    Using this interface, you can set up more backup tasks, browse and restore backed up data, and monitor the status of in-progress backups.

    Conclusion

    In this tutorial we installed Synology’s Hyper Backup software, and configured a backup to the DigitalOcean Spaces object storage service. For more detailed information on the configuration and use of Hyper Backup, please refer to the official documentation.

    You also have to know UserId and Password of Synology device.

    Enter Package Center.
    Click Settings.
    In ‘Allow installation of packages by’ select ‘Any publisher’.

    Click Manual Install.
    Select file goodsync-release.spk from your Downloads folder.
    Approve install, GoodSync server will be installed and started.

    Connect to GoodSync Server by typing into your browser:

    where 192.168.1.NN is local net IP address of your Synology NAS.

    You will see Initial Setup dialog of GoodSync Server.
    Enter your GoodSync Connect UserID and Password.

    Now your GoodSync Server on NAS will become visible on the Internet and Local Net.
    You can see it in GoodSync Explorer, and upload/download/sync files with it.
    The entire file system of Linux-based NAS is visible to you, so may see some unfamiliar files.

    To change configuration of GoodSync Server on the NAS, go to to:
    http://192.168.1.NN:11000
    and login using your GoodSync Connect credentials.

    Granting GoodSync permissions

    DSM 7: If you installed GoodSync package manually and not from AppStore, do the following in DSM7 UI:

    1) Click [Control Panel] icon on Desktop
    2) Choose [Shared Folder] from left-side navigation bar
    3) On the right, select a share you want to give permissions to and Click [Edit] button
    4) Go to [Permissions] tab
    5) Click the drop-down that says “Local Users”, choose “System internal user”
    6) Find “GoodSync” and check the checkbox in “Read/Write” column
    7) Click [Save] button

    As previously written, I’m the brand new owner of a Synology DS214se DiskStation (basically, an entry-level, 2-disk, network-attached RAID, with lots of added cloudy/streamy features built in).

    When I was shopping around for the DS214se, I was struck by a lack of “how to” articles describing the setup process. While Synology’s done their best to keep the DiskStation line as consumer-friendly as possible, I’d imagine the whole thing is still beyond most casual computer users. Which is a real shame, because a cheap and sturdy RAID/NAS is exactly what any house with more than one computer should have.

    So, here’s a step-by-step guide on setting up a Synology DiskStation (in this case, a DS214se) with a Mac. With any luck, the googlejuice will be strong with this one, and people like me will find it next time they’re thinking about buying and setting up a home NAS.

    System requirements

    You’ll need a DS214se (£120 on Amazon) and two 3.5-inch hard drives (in my case, a pair of WD Red 2TB drives, available for £75 each on Amazon).

    You’ll also need a small (size #1?) phillips head screwdriver.

    Hardware set-up

    Get everything out, open up the DS214se as suggested in the little booklet (of which a more in-depth version is available here, should you find the IKEA-esque diagrams confusing) and fit the two drives using the aforementioned screwdriver. Close the case, and plug the DS214se into your router and then the power.

    Note: The supplied Ethernet cable is approximately 100cm long. The power cable comes in two parts: a 60cm kettle plug and cable, and a 90cm powerbrick and extension that goes into the back of the DS. Finding a suitable position for the DS, 150cm from a power socket and 100cm from your router, is probably the hardest part of this whole setup procedure.

    Once you plug everything in, and turn the DS on, lights will start flashing on the front of the box. You’ll also, at random points throughout the process, hear a horrific, angry-sounding beep, which is, unfortunately, your DS214se’s only way to say “hello” 1 . In case you wonder what the blinkenlights mean, Synology provides a breakdown on page 10 of the Quick Installation Guide. With any luck, the “Disk 1”, “Disk 2” and “LAN” lights should be solid green. “Status”, however, will be a rather worrying shade of blinking orange.

    Unlike normal circumstances, where blinking orange means something bad™ has happened, when your DS is new, an orange “Status” light is perfectly fine. Just head on over to http://find.synology.com which will somehow magically detect your DS and begin the setup guide.

    Software set-up

    Synology’s really honed this setup process, and it involves little more than clicking the “Next” arrow four times in a row. Your DS214se will reformat the two hard drives you just installed, and then download the latest software from synology.com, before asking for an admin user account password. Choose wisely.

    Once its all done, you’re shown the login panel for what Synology calls “DSM” – the DiskStation Manager. Log in with the admin username and password you just chose, and you’ll be greeted by what looks at first glance like a slightly messy Windows 7 desktop. Yes, this whole thing is running in your browser, and yes, it’s the admin interface for your DS214se. Bonkers, I know.

    Anyway, DSM helpfully tells you it’s checking the consistency of your new disks – hence the mellow crunching sound and blinking “Disk” lights you might have noticed coming from your DS213se. Not to worry, you can still poke around. Ignore the weirdly interactive “Quick Start Wizard” – it’s just information overload, and you don’t need to do any of the stuff it suggests.

    Being a geek, the first thing I did was open up the Control Panel. If you don’t live in the US, it’s worth visiting “Regional Options” to set your local timezone. And if you’re a geek, you’ll probably also want to enable SSH access to your DS by ticking the relevant box in the “Terminal” section. 2

    Now, with the setup done, it’s time to wait for the “parity consistency check” to finish. In my case, it took exactly 7 hours.

    Over the years, I’ve setup dozens of Synology Network Appliances for customers and friends. But I never thought of doing much writing in the NAS space, be it for ReadyNAS, Thecus, Buffalo, etc. The interfaces seemed to change too fast and my focus was always on the management and connectivity of Apple devices. Slowly, over the years, small business servers have gone from being something you could make a decent living to something that should probably be hosted in the cloud.

    Unless you have a design requirement that just can’t work in the cloud. And for that, there are a ton of options. Today we’ll cover the basic setup of a Synology to fill one of those options. Synology has a number of models. There are those that have multiple drive bays that allow you to run a RAID 50 and there are those with just two drive bays, that allow you to run RAID 1, or 0. But most have a similar, and sleek setup process. Start by putting all the drives in the bays and then powering up your device.

    When the device comes online, plug in your Ethernet cable (preferably to a gig or 10gig interface) and then open your web browser and go to http://find.synology.com. You’ll see a pretty basic screen with details about the device. Click Connect.

    When prompted, install the latest security updates (note: you want to do this before you start sending sensitive credentials over the wire. It’s fast. )

    This is important. Those drives you put in that Synology were empty, right? ‘Cause if you proceed here, they better be. Or they will be after. If they are empty, check the box and click OK.

    At the “Create your administrator account” screen enter the hostname you want to be given to your server, a username, password, password a second time to make sure, and blood type. Wait, blood type goes on the next screen, so click Next.

    Sike! No blood type required. At the superfluous Congratulations screen, click next again!

    At the maintenance window, select a time that the device can install updates and reboot. Also, it’s a good idea to check both of the boxes at the bottom – S.M.A.R.T. tests don’t always save you from catastrophic data loss, but it does save you way more than if you don’t use it. And bad sector warnings aren’t good either. Click Next.

    A QuickConnect account allows you to access your server remotely. That’s a great thing to have. If you have one, provide it here; otherwise, give Synology an email address and password and they’ll make it simple to manage your device remotely (which includes grabbing files off it when you’re at work, etc).

    I’m ok skipping the recommended packages, as I like to have more control of what’s installed on my devices, but if you’re just going to use a Synology as a basic file or Time Machine server and want as few steps as possible here, click Install.

    When you finally get into the main screen, notice that it’s kinda’ like a stripped down KDE interface. The main two things to know are Control Panel and Package Center. If you skipped installing some of the packages in the previous step, you’ll do that in Package Center. But first, let’s check out the global device settings by clicking on Control Panel.

    At the Control Panel, the main things most users will want to do first are manage accounts and addresses (if you’re going to connect client computers to a file server, for example, you’re gonna’ want a static IP). So let’s click Network to configure a network interface.

    The General tab is for configuring your default gateway, upstream name servers, etc. Click Network Interface so we can enter a static address for a LAN interface. But before you do, take note that the Traffic Control tab provides the ability to do some basic traffic shaping if this box is going to run multiple services.

    Here, you can enter the IP, subnet mask, gateway, and name server. Make sure the IP doesn’t overlap with an existing device or with a DHCP pool. I won’t go into configuring a Synology for VLAN tagging or to be a first class citizen on an 802.1x network, but note that both of those options are available here. Click OK to save your changes.

    You didn’t pay good money for this thing for no reason. So next, let’s close these screens and go back to the main screen. Open Package Center.

    As you can see, there are a ton more services here than, for example, the built-in services on a macOS Server. And it’s as easy as clicking on the Install button to get started with each.

    Installing on Synology DSM

    NOTE: The ResourceSpace team does not actively monitor this guide and this article may be out of date.

    Requirements

    • A Synology NAS with an Intel processor. If you successfully install on an unit with a different processor architecture, please let us know.
    • Some familiarity of the Synology DSM control panel.
    • Basic understanding of terminal and SSH usage.
    • Knowing how to do minor text editing with nano or vi.
    • Admin access to the DSM control panel.
    • Root SSH access.

    Know your NAS address

    You may have configured external access through the synology.me dynamic DNS service or some other service. Perhaps your server is only available in the local network. In any case, you’ll need to have the IP address or domain where your NAS is reachable.

    The Synology web assistant may be useful to determine the IP address of your NAS in the local network.

    Install ipkg

    IPKG is a package manager similar to APT or yum. It will allow you to install some dependencies like ghostscript and imagemagick easily. Have your SSH connection ready, you’ll need it here.

    • First, identify your NAS processor and take note of it.
    • Then get and execute the adequate bootstrap script
    • Finally, test ipkg by running:

    You should see a list of available packages. If you get a not found error, go back to the previous steps and make sure there were no errors.

    Install ipkg package

    Run in the terminal:

    xpdf will provide pdftotext

    Enable WebStation

    • Follow this guide to enable WebStation (Apache server).
    • Create a virtualhost for ResourceSpace in a directory named resourcespace, as detailed in the same guide.

    Install MariaDB

    The latest versions of DSM have MariaDB instead of MySQL. MariaDB is a drop-in, fully open source replacement for MySQL.

    • In the DSM control panel, open the Package Center, look for MariaDB and click Install.
    • Once installed, open MariaDB and change the root password.

    Install exiftool

    • Download exiftool
    • Extract the contents of the package
    • Copy the exiftool executable to /usr/syno/bin/exiftool

    Adding the exiftool directory to PATH isn’t necessary because the full path is configured in ResourceSpace.

    Adjust php.ini

    In that file, set:

    You might need higher values if your users are going to upload video or huge images to the repository.

    Fix PHP’s open_basepath

    • In the Control Panel, go to Web Services and click on the PHP Settings tab.
    • Check the Customize PHP open_basedir checkbox.
    • In the open_basedir text field enter:

    (this assumes that you named the ResourceSpace virtual host directory resourcespace and that it is located on volume 1)

    Install ResourceSpace

    Assuming that you named the ResourceSpace virtual host directory resourcespace and that it is located on volume 1:

    • Following the instructions here to check out ResourceSpace.
    • Point your browser to http://[YOUR NAS ADDRESS]/resourcespace and follow the install instructions.

    The binary paths are:

    Set up the cron job

    • Open the Control Panel and click on the Task Scheduler.
    • Click on Create and select User defined script.
    • Name the task ResourceSpace.
    • In the User-defined script textarea, enter:

    (assuming that the virtual host you set up is named resourcespace)

    • If you need to change the default daily execution frequency, visit the schedule tab.

    Secure your NAS

    You may have terabytes of valuable assets stored in it, securing them is worth a few extra steps.

    It’s best to disable services you aren’t using, as they might open security vulnerabilities. Go to the DSM control panel and disable SSH (and any other services you aren’t using).

    • Fix permissions. In the terminal, run:

    Important note: In this guide, we’ll use testcert.us as an example name. When you complete CSR code generation and SSL activation, and download the corresponding certificate files to your SSLs.com account, they will be named after your own website.

    Step 1: Security Panel

    Log in to your Synology NAS. Choose Security from the Control Panel menu.

    In the Security tab, select the Add option from the drop-down menu.

    Check the Add a new certificate option and click Next.

    Please note: You can use the Replace an existing certificate option if you need to reinstall a reissued or renewal SSL, or import a new one. In this case, choose the Certificate you’d like to replace and click Next.

    Step 3: Apply the SSL Files

    On the following screen, mark the Import certificate checkbox and click Next.

    Next, use the Browse buttons to upload the corresponding Private key (.key), Certificate (.crt) and Intermediate certificate (.ca-bundle) files from your PC. Once done, hit OK.

    That’s it! Your website is now secure and accessible via https://.

    You’ll see the SSL is listed in the Certificate tab of the Control Panel:

    Secure services

    You can link the installed certificate to the services available in the Configure menu. Follow the example in the image below:

    Setting up HTTPS

    Today, Google requires all websites to be https:// by default. You can set up an automated redirect from http:// to https:// for your website via your Synology NAS Control Panel by doing the following:

    In the main Control panel menu, select the Network tab and then the DSM Settings tab.

    Mark Automatically redirect HTTP connections to HTTPS and click Apply. That’s it, you’re all set now!

    This online checker will help you to verify the SSL installation. Ensure you specify the correct HTTPS Port – 5001 by default. Alternatively, just visit your website in your browser (via http:// if the redirect has been enabled; via https:// if it’s not the default version of your website).

    The Synology DSM sensor platform provides access to various statistics from your Synology NAS as well as cameras from the Surveillance Station.

    Configuration

    Adding Synology DSM to your Home Assistant instance can be done via the user interface, by using this My button:

    Synology DSM can be auto-discovered by Home Assistant. If an instance was found, it will be shown as “Discovered”, which you can select to set it up right away.

    If there wasn’t any discovered automatically, don’t worry! You can set up a manual integration entry:

    • Browse to your Home Assistant instance.
    • In the sidebar click on Configuration.
    • From the configuration menu select: Integrations.
    • In the bottom right, click on the Add Integration button.
    • From the list, search and select “Synology DSM”.
    • Follow the instruction on screen to complete the set up.

    This sensor will wake up your Synology NAS if it’s in hibernation mode.

    You can change the scan interval within the configuration options (default is 15 min).

    Having cameras or the Home mode toggle from Surveillance Station will fetch every 30 seconds. Disable those entities if you don’t want your NAS to be fetch as frequently.

    Separate User Configuration

    Due to the nature of the Synology DSM API, it is required to grant the user admin rights. This is related to the fact that utilization information is stored in the core module.

    When creating the user, it is possible to deny access to all locations and applications. By doing this, the user will not be able to login to the web interface or view any of the files on the Synology NAS. It is still able to read the utilization and storage information using the API.

    If you utilize 2-Step Verification or Two Factor Authentication (2FA) with your Synology NAS

    If you have the “Enforce 2-step verification for the following users” option checked under Control Panel > User > Advanced > 2-Step Verification, you’ll need to configure the 2-step verification/one-time password (OTP) for the user you just created before the credentials for this user will work with Home Assistant.

    Make sure to log out of your “normal” user’s account and then login with the separate user you created specifically for Home Assistant. DSM will walk you through the process of setting up the one-time password for this user which you’ll then be able to use in Home Assistant’s frontend configuration screen.

    Sensors

    CPU Utilisation sensors

    Entities reporting the current and combined CPU utilization of the NAS. There are sensors the report the current CPU load, separated by User, System and others. By default, only the User sensor is enabled.

    There are also combined CPU load sensors. These report the total CPU load for the entire NAS. Available as current, 1min, 5min and 15min load sensors. By default the 1min load sensor is disabled.

    Memory Utilisation sensors

    Entities reporting the current and combined memory and swap utilization of the NAS. These sensors include the total installed amount, the currently free amount and the % of memory used.

    Network sensors

    Entities reporting the current network transfer rates of the NAS. Both upload and download sensors are available.

    General sensors

    Entities reporting the internal temperature and the uptime of the NAS. The uptime sensor is disabled by default.

    Disk sensors

    Entities reporting the internal temperature, status (as shown in Synology DSM) and SMART status for each drive inside the NAS. The SMART status sensor is disabled by default.

    Volume sensors

    Entities reporting status, total size (TB), used size (TB), % of volume used, average disk temperature and maximum disk temperature for each volume inside the NAS. By default the total size and maximum disk temperature sensors are disabled.

    Binary sensors

    General sensors

    Entities reporting the update and security status of the NAS.

    The security status corresponds with the analysis of the DSM Security Advisor, e.g., an outOfDate state for the Update attribute not only reflects the update status of the installed DSM version but also the status of the installed DSM packages.

    Disk sensors

    Similar to the normal disk sensors, there are binary sensors reporting each drive’s status. These sensors report if a drive has exceeded the maximum threshold for detected bad sectors and if a drive has dropped below the threshold for its remaining life.

    Switch

    A switch is available to enable/disable the Surveillance Station Home mode.

    Cameras

    For each camera added in Surveillance Station, a camera will be created in Home Assistant.

    Services

    Service synology_dsm.reboot

    Reboot the specified NAS by serial . If only one DSM is configured, serial is optional.

    Tailscale makes it easy to securely connect to your Synology NAS devices over WireGuard®.

    Tailscale is free for most personal uses, including accessing your NAS.

    Installation steps

    Visit the Synology Package Center (tutorial).

    Search for and install the Tailscale app.

    Once the app is installed, follow the instructions to Log in using your preferred identity provider. If you don’t already have a Tailscale account, a free account will be created automatically.

    Now your Synology NAS is available on your tailnet. Connect to it from your PC, laptop, phone, or tablet by installing Tailscale on another device.

    Features

    When used with Synology, Tailscale supports these features:

    • Web-based login to any supported identity provider.
    • Access your Synology NAS from anywhere, without opening firewall ports.
    • Share your NAS with designated Tailscale users, using node sharing.
    • Restrict access to your NAS using ACLs.
    • Use your NAS as a subnet router to provide external access to your LAN. (Currently requires command-line steps.)
    • Use your NAS as an exit node for secure Internet access from anywhere. (Currently requires command-line steps.)

    Limitations & known issues

    The first release of our Synology package (1.9.156) has a few limitations you should be aware of:

    If you upgrade Synology from DSM6 to DSM7, you will need to uninstall and then reinstall the Tailscale app. Do not perform the Synology DSM7 upgrade over Tailscale or you may lose your connection during the upgrade.

    We always use hybrid networking mode on Synology, which means that if you share subnets, they will be reachable over UDP and TCP, but not pingable.

    Other Synology apps cannot make outgoing connections to your other Tailscale nodes yet. Only incoming connections work right now.

    Tailscale on Synology currently can do –advertise-routes but not –accept-routes . This means that if you have other subnet routers, devices on those other subnets will not yet be able to reach your NAS or devices on its local subnet.

    Subnet routing and exit nodes can only be configured from the command line right now, not the web GUI.

    The Tailscale package configures Synology port forwarding for port 443. This can lead to conflict with other services that also require port 443 like nginx.

    We intend to fix all these issues in subsequent releases.

    Synology offers NAS devices that come with a UI for starting docker containers on them. This means OpenProject has to be used exactly as described in the docker section.

    Launching the container

    Launching OpenProject works like launching any other container in Synology.

    First you have to go to the Registry section and download the OpenProject image. It’s best to choose the specific tag of the latest stable version ( openproject/community:11 at the time of writing). You can use :latest too but it might lead to surprises when a major version upgrade happens.

    Below are some settings you have to pay attention to when launching the container.

    Volumes

    Most importantly you have to configure mounted volumes for pgdata and assets as described in that section. When launching the container you can configure this under the advanced settings in the volumes tab. Otherwise you will lose your data when the container is deleted during an update.

    Ports

    You should also configure a specific port in the network tab so that your container will always run on the same port. Otherwise it might happen that the port changes when the container restarts.

    Restart policy

    You should also check the “always restart” option when launching the container.

    Updates

    For updates to be safe make sure that you have mounted the pgdata and assets folders as volumes. Ideally you should also always backup these folders before any updates.

    Updating the container then works like this:

    1. Go to the Registry
    2. Search for OpenProject, click download and choose the tag you want to update (e.g. 11 or latest).
    3. Stop the container once the new image has been downloaded.
    4. Click on clear and restart the container.

    This will restart the container with the updated image. Your OpenProject data will remain intact as long as you mounted the volumes as described above.

    I had already started OpenProject without mounted volumes. How do I save my data during an update?

    You will need to open a terminal on your Synology disk station. Then follow the instructions given in the upgrade section.

    Synology DiskStation DS1515+ NAS: Initial Setup

    Surprisingly, the initial setup of the Synology DiskStation DS1515+ was very easy and painless. Unlike most NAS units, which have a hard coded static IP address that you need to hook a machine up to and do the initial tasks before adding it to your network, Synology has taken the steps to make it seamless to the users. You just plug in your NAS to an outlet and then connect NIC Port 1 to the network. It will go out and grab a DHCP assigned address on your current network so no changes are needed to access it. Then you load up http://find.synology.com and your desktop machine will be instructed to start broadcasting over NBNS and LLMNR to find where the Synology NAS is.

    In case you are not familiar with these protocols, NBNS is NetBIOS, which sends the packet out over IPv4 to solicit a name resolution just like DNS, but without a DNS server. LLMNR, which stands for Link-Local Multicast Name Resolution, is newer and can operate over IPv4 as well as IPv6 and runs the same way as NetBIOS where it sends out queries for the device that owns that name to respond back to. Synology queries all the preconfigured names that its devices use such as synologyrouter, rackstation, beyondcloud, and more. Once the NAS sees the multicast query it sends a response with its MAC and IP addresses. Then the Web Assistant provides that information to you as shown below and allows you to connect to it with one button. Once connected, you are at the login screen that has a default username “admin” with no password; you enter that and you are presented with the initial configuration wizard.

    The initial configuration wizard takes you through a few brief steps to get you set up and beginning to use the Synology NAS. The DSM or DiskStation Manager is very intuitive, as you can see below, and is designed to get you using the NAS very quickly and efficiently. The wizard has you create your administrator account that overwrites the “admin” account so you can choose your own login. Then you are prompted to update to the latest DSM and set up automatic updates should you choose. One great feature of Synology DSM is QuickConnect, which you will be prompted to setup. I recommend setting this feature up as it allows you to share files from your NAS via the Internet, giving you external access on the go. This is done without port forwarding as the NAS is connected out to Synology for you to access in a sort of reverse shell method. You even have your own custom URL you can set up.

    Finally, as part of the initial configuration wizard, you are prompted to install Synology’s recommended packages to get you started. These packages are installed on the Synology NAS and give you additional functionality, such as having a built-in audio server, media server, photo stream, Web server, and more. Once they are completed you will see the “installed” option shown under the names and you will be presented with a popup completing the installation. Then you are all done, the wizard will end, and you drop onto the desktop-looking interface that is the Synology DiskStation Manager UI.

    Now that the initial configuration is done, we can take a better look at the Web-based UI and the control panel.

    This post will show you how to install Nano on your Synology NAS. Many people prefer Nano since Nano is easier to use than VIM. Luckily the Synology NAS allows you to add additional software repositories and install Nano easily.

    Enable SSH Access

    You must enable SSH access to use Nano on your Synology NAS.

    Click on the ‘Control Panel’ icon and then click on ‘Terminal & SNMP’. Finally, tick the option called ‘Enable SSH Service’ and click ‘apply’.

    Add a repository

    Nano is not provided or maintained by Synology, but you can get it from the SynoCommunity repository. In addition, SynoCommunity provides free packages for Synology NAS devices. Visit them at https://synocommunity.com/ and feel free to explore some of the other packages they have to offer, like Git, Home Assistant, and of course, Nano.

    To add the SynoCommunity repository:

    Click on the ‘Package Center’ icon and then click on the ‘settings’ button.

    In the ‘settings’ window ‘general’ tab, click on the ‘Synology Inc and trusted publishers’ radio button in the’ trust level’ section.

    On the ‘settings’ window ‘package sources’ tab, click on the ‘Add’ button and add the repository:
    Name: SynoCommunity
    Location: http://packages.synocommunity.com/

    Click on the ‘Ok’ button once you are done.

    Install Nano from the Repository

    The final step is to install Nano. To do this, make sure you are still in the ‘package centre’. Then, click on the ‘community’ section, find ‘SynoCli File Tools’ and click on the ‘install’ button. The SynoCli File Tools package provides the following command-line utilities: less, tree, ncdu, jdupes, rhash, mc, nano, file, detox, rmlint, and rnm v1.1-3. Nano was previously a separate package but is now only available via the SynoCli File Tools package.

    Wrapping up

    You can now run Nano using SSH in the usual way! Type ‘nano’ and the file name you wish to open. Remember that you will need ‘sudo’ in some circumstances, depending on what you need to do.

    Go to File Station and open the docker folder. Inside the docker folder, create one new folder and name it homeassistant. Follow the instructions in the image below.

    Once you click on User-defined script a new window will open. Follow the instructions below:

    1. General: In the Task field type in Install Home Assistant. Uncheck “Enabled” option. Select root User.
    2. Schedule: Select Run on the following date then select “Do not repeat“.
    3. Task Settings: Check “Send run details by email“, add your email then copy paste the code below in the Run command area. After that click OK.

    Note : Before you paste the code above in the Run command area below, change the value for TZ (Select your current Time Zone from this list).

    After you click OK on STEP 5 a new warning pop up window will open. Click OK.

    After you click OK on STEP 6 , select your “Install Home Assistant” Task then click the “Run” tab. You will be asked to run Install Home Assistant – click Yes. Follow the instructions in the image below.

    Go back to STEP 1 or you will deal with karma 🙂

    The installation process can take up to a few seconds/minutes. It will depend on your Internet speed connection. Now open your browser and type in http://Synology-ip-address:8123 Choose Name, Username, Password and Confirm Password then click CREATE ACCOUNT.

    Choose a name for your home then click “DETECT“. Move your location point on the MAP and choose your location then click NEXT.

    Note : Bridged networking (as it is presented in this tutorial) does not work with homekit. If you want to control home assistant devices with the home app from Apple (homekit integration, not homekit controller), you must use host networking because otherwise the home assistant bridge will not be found by the homekit app. So if you want use the homekit app, delete the current home assistant container via docker, the folder, and redo the tutorial from the beginning.     Note: Hass.io Supervisor is a “bridge” between Home Assistant and the operating system. It allows Home Assistant to do things like ‘get hardware information’, and ‘restart hardware’. Home Assistant is, well, a home assistant. It’s what performs automations, displays the UI etc.
