Whether you’re looking for apartments or used gadgets on Craigslist, you don’t have to keep checking the website. You can stay on top of things by getting notified when new posts go up that match your searches.

How to Get Email Notifications

Craigslist has built-in email alerts. You can get an email alert for any Craigslist search, and it’s free.

To set up email notifications, just head to the Craigslist website and perform whatever search you want. For example, you might pick a city, select the apartments for rent section, enter how many bedrooms you want, and provide the maximum amount of rent you’re willing to pay per month.

The official Craigslist alerts FAQ says that the more specific your search, the more often it will run and the more alerts you’ll get. In other words, if you’re searching for all cars for sale in a city, Craigslist will check for new posts less often than if you’re searching for only a specific model of car.

After you’ve performed your search, click “Save Search” to the right of the search bar on the Craigslist website. This same option appears right by the search box on the Craigslist mobile website, too.

If you’re not already signed in to Craigslist, you’ll be prompted to either sign in or create an account. If you don’t yet have an account, it’s easy and quick to create one.

You’re then taken to the Searches page in your Craigslist account settings. To activate email alerts for the search you just saved, click the “Alert” checkbox to the left of the search.

Checking the “Alert” box activates email notifications for that search. They’re sent to the email address associated with your Craigslist account, so keep an eye out for the emails.

Remember, the more specific your search, the more often Craigslist checks for new posts and emails them to you.

You can see all the searches for which you’re receiving emails, as well as deactivate, edit, or delete those searches.

How to Set Up SMS Alerts

Craigslist doesn’t have built-in SMS alerts, but you can set up your own with the popular IFTTT (If This, Then That) service. This is useful if you want instant notifications of new Craigslist posts on your phone without having to check your email.

Update: IFTTT no longer offers SMS alerts. However, if you install the IFTTT app on your phone, you can set up push notification alerts instead. Follow the below process but choose notifications instead of SMS as your action.

To do this, head to the IFTTT website and create an account if you haven’t already done so. After you’re signed in to your IFTTT account, click “My Applets” and then click “New Applet.” You can also do this in the IFTTT app for iPhone or Android, or on the mobile website.

On the New Applet page, click the “This” link.

Introduction: Create the ‘Ultimate Craigslist Notification Tool’

How to set up craigslist alerts (for email or sms)

How to set up craigslist alerts (for email or sms)

Warning: this project is for mac users.

Okay. All craigslist users have had it happen once or twice.

You’re pumped about that new USB coffee cup warmer for $10 and you find out your next door neighbor bought it first.

“If only,” you wish “I could have been warned EXACTLY when that was posted! Then I could have called the seller and the deal would be done!”

Well. You can, with this handy little trick involving a piece of software called FeedPopper, RSS and a little free time.

For mac users who use safari, you might have tried to use Craigslist’s RSS feeds to search for new posts about a certain item.

But, although this is very handy, it only puts a modest little number next to the bookmark name. That doesn’t exactly scream at you.

FeedPopper (Freeware at ) is an RSS reader with style.

FeedPopper has a unique and very effective way of letting you know when a feed is updated. It creates a stylish popup window which expands into view, and makes a handy little jingly noise while it’s at it.

So, when I found out about FeedPopper, I wired it into the ULTIMATE CRAIGSLIST NOTIFICATION TOOL.

As an example in this project, I’ll pretend I am looking for a PSP.

Heres what the finished product will do:

1) Bob in Wisconsin is cleaning out a drawer when he finds his old dusty PSP. He thinks ‘HMMMMM, maybe some kid wants this’ and decides to put it up for sale on craigslist.

2) Little does he know that you have been searching craigslist for a month, hoping to find a PSP in your price range (not very likely, but stick with me).

3) With your handy ULTIMATE CRAIGSLIST NOTIFICATION TOOL, the moment he hits ‘POST’ a little pop-up window on your mac goes JINGLE JINGLE JINGLE and expands into view. It displays Bob’s PSP with a link to the craigslist post.

Heres how to do it:

Step 1: Download FeedPopper

FeedPopper is the sole of the project. It’s available here for free:

FeedPopper is also cool because it sits in the menu bar, up with the volume control, time, airport reception ect.

It is operates from there, so you don’t have to open and close it, or have another icon on the doc.

Once downloaded, click on the FeedPopper icon ( A dead looking fish wrapped around the world) and it will appear in the menu bar.

Step 2: Set the Preferences

Drag down the FeedPopper icon’s menu and select ‘Preferences’.

I believe the default preferences are fine, but just in case, they should look like the picture.

For instance, we want the pop up to come to the front and we want the sound.

Step 3: Get Feeds

I’m in seattle, and the URL for PSP in seattle’s craigslist is:

I got this by searching craigslist for PSP and hitting the RSS icon at the end of the address bar.

Step 4: Install Feeds

When you have the feed(s) you want/need you have to let FeedPopper know what they are.

Drag the FeedPopper icon (in the menu bar) down and select Feeds.

You will then see a window that asks you to give a name and URL.

Step 5: Finished.

At this point, you are more or less done, other than any customization you might want.

FeedPopper checks a max of once every 5 minutes, that is usually enough to get a bid in before anyone else. Especially on weekdays.

You can manually check it by selecting ‘Refresh Now’ in the menu.

So, the next time someone posts about an item you have FeedPopper checking for, a magical pop up will appear on top of everything, give a nice Jingle Jingle, and Let you know that someone is selling a hot pink electric dog collar for $15.

Yes this article is focused on buyer notifications, but sellers too benefit from fast notifications. As I am sure you are aware the faster the seller responds to their ads the more likely they will get the sale. This site

makes it really easy to set up receiving text messages from Craig’s list without giving out your cell number.

Just forward your Craigslist emails so you receive text messages on your phone.

New items are posted to Craigslist everyday. Sometimes you just aren’t checking at the right time and end up missing out on a great deal. You can easily use Visualping as a Craigslist notifier for all the best deals.

I love the hunt for a great deal. There’s something uniquely satisfying about getting the things you need (and maybe a few things you don’t) for less than market value. During most of my 20s, for example, I did a daily scour of Craigslist before bedtime for vintage furniture to decorate my 350-square-foot apartment. Over the years, I walked away with plenty of scores — a velvet rocking chair from the Art Nouveau era, a set of gold-framed paintings from the 1920s, you name it. Nine times out of 10, I’d be able to sell these items for more than I paid for them when I was ready for something new.

And then I became a new mom, and all that went out the window. Craigslist wasn’t going anywhere, but amidst the onslaught of daily life, I no longer had the time to use it. So, despite the fact that baby-related expenses were piling up higher than my laundry, my husband and I found ourselves paying the “baby tax” on new items. You know—that giant fee retailers put on clothes, furniture and other supplies when the intended user is tiny and cute.

A full year of baby tax is a hit to the wallet and I found myself looking for ways to get back on the Craigslist train without having to sacrifice too much of my limited free time. Specifically, I’d been on the prowl for one of those Thule Chariot strollers, in hopes that the turn of the New Year might inspire me to rekindle my relationship with exercise. But, they move quickly on Craigslist, and my schedule as a working mom wouldn’t allow me to keep on top of it on my own.

A colleague of mine brought Visualping to my attention, which is free to use, and may be my best weapon yet in my battle against the baby tax. Though, it could really be used for any Craigslist search, whether you need a printer for the office, used auto parts, a piece of camping equipment or are looking for work or housing. Whatever the need, Visualping can monitor updates to Craigslist searches by tracking visual changes to the web page. It will alert you through your email when a change is detected, so that you can go about your day without worrying about missing a post.

Let me walk you through my search for the Thule Chariot.

Step 1: Pull up Visualping and Craigslist

Start by pulling up the Craigslist website in your region, and navigate to the section you want to track. For me, this was the For Sale section on Craigslist: Vancouver. I considered going further into the “baby + kid” subcategory, but since I was looking for a specific brand name item in a search that turns up relatively few posts in my area, I thought I may get more hits by searching the For Sale section more generally. Type your keywords into the search bar and hit enter.

Next, open a new tab and head to. If you’ve never done Visualping site monitoring before, you can set up your account just by creating your first monitoring task. Unlike many free online services, which seem to require all your personal information, Visualping just needs your email, as that’s where you’ll receive notifications.

Step 2: Set up an account by doing a monitoring task

Once you’ve landed on a list of posts in Craigslist, copy the URL from your web browser, paste it into the search bar on the Visualping website and click “GO”. Note that the URL will contain all the search parameters (item description, category, price range, etc.) so make sure to copy the entire URL. A screenshot of your Craigslist search, exactly as it appears to Visualping’s servers, will pop up in the box underneath the bar where you just pasted the URL. Crop the image so that it covers the full section you’d like to track. For me, this involved catching the Craigslist search bar in the image, and several of the posts directly underneath. Enter your email address directly below and select how often you’d like the system to check for updates. Thule Chariots often move within a day or two when they’re priced to sell, so I selected “every day”.

Step 3: Confirm your email and wait for notifications to roll in

For a basic search, click “Start free monitoring”. This will prompt you to verify your email address. Make sure to check your spam folder if it doesn’t come through within a minute or two to your inbox. Open the email and click “Activate”. This will send you back to the Visualping website and prompt you to select a password. Once you’ve completed this step, you’re finished setting up an account and your search is ready to go! Just sit back and check for updates at your leisure using your email.

[Screenshot of an email alert – we will redo it so the first search appears as there are no items]

You can do up to 65 free searches per month with a limit of two separate pages per day (each time the servers open the page to see whether there is an update, this is considered a “check”).

That’s a frequency of roughly two checks per day, which is within my Craigslist hunting needs at the moment. However, more active Craigslist users may want to consider upgrading to the basic plan at $4 dollars a month, which would allow you to search up to 10 pages a day.

Visualping also works for sites like Kijiji, Ebay Classifieds or the online classifieds section of your local newspaper. Anyone using Craigslist to hunt for rental housing in locations with a low vacancy rate like Vancouver or San Francisco, for example, should consider boosting the frequency of checks to ensure that you’re the first in line for communicating with landlords and building managers.

Lo and behold, I received an email notification from Visualping as I was writing this post. The most recent offer is a bit pricey, so I’m going to keep my monitoring active for another few weeks to see if another offer is posted or the price is reduced on this one. In the meantime, I may just get back into the antique furniture scene. Only, this time I’ll be waiting for the deals to come to me.

There is nothing worse than missing out on a great Craigslist deal just because you were too late to the party. By setting up alerts for what you need, always stay on top of the game and get notified when someone posts an item you are looking for. Alerts can be set for Email as well as SMS. Let us look at both of these ways in more detail.

How to set up craigslist alerts (for email or sms)

How to set up Email Notifications?

Craigslist has built-in email alerts that can be enabled in a few simple steps,

Step one: Open the Craigslist website and carry out a search like usual. For example, if you are looking for houses to rent in Boston. Then head over to Craigslist Boston and put in the other parameters such as your budget for the rent, the number of bedrooms you need, and the locality you need it in. The more specific the requirements, the better as highly specific searches are run more often, and thus you will end up receiving more alerts.

After you have completed the search, all you have to do is click on the “Save Search” option that can be found on the right of the screen. For those users who aren’t signed into craigslist, the browser will send out a prompt to either login or create a new account. Creating an account is simple, and it won’t take too much time, but it saves you a lot of search time in the long run.

Once this is all done, you will be directed to a Searches Page in the account settings page on Craigslist. Click on the alert checkbox found at the left of the search you have saved, and you will receive email alerts. These email notifications are sent to the email that you used to register on Craigslist. All the searches you have ever saved can be found on this page, and you can activate, deactivate, edit, or even delete these searches once the job is done. To stop receiving the alerts, you can click on the checkbox in the alert column and disable the alert.

Setting up push notifications on the phone:

This is a little trickier than the email alerts as Craigslist doesn’t have built-in phone alerts. You will need to use an If this, then that (IFTTT) service using the IFTTT app on your phone in 10 simple steps.

Step 1: Go to the IFTTT app and create a new account if you don’t already have one.

Step 2: Click on “My Applets” and select New Applet.

Step 3: Click on the “This” link on the page with the new Applet.

Step 4: Find and choose the “Classifieds” option.

Step 5: You will find an option called “New Post From Search,” click on it.

Step 6: Copy the link of the Craigslist Search and paste it in the box below. To get this link, copy the web address that you can find in the address bar of the browser.

Step 7: Click on the “Create Trigger” option.

Step 8: Once you are done with the If condition, it is time for the then part. Click on the “That” link and set up the outcome if the trigger is activated.

Step 9: Choose the “Notification” option in the list of services provided. Choose the “send me a push notification” action. By default, choosing this action will send your phone a push notification that has a title as well as a clickable link. Clicking on “Create action” will result in you accepting this setting.

Step 10: Last but not least, when you are done creating the action, click on “Finish” to save the settings.

Now that you have set it up, all that’s left is to switch the Applet on, and you are good to go. You can easily toggle these applets on and off whenever needed. Now you can count on being the first to know of any new deal that is posted on Craigslist, like apartments for rent on Craigslist Boston.

You can literally save thousands of dollars if you buy stuff on Craigslist.
The main problem is how time consuming the search can get when you are looking for that particular gadget, furniture, job offer, used car, etc.

I remember looking for a “Jonas” Ikea Desk and spending days checking every couple of hours to see if one became available.
Eventually I gave up only to check 2 weeks later and find out that one had become available and sold to someone else!

There has to be a better way to find stuff on Craigslist!

And there is. with a free service called IFTTT (pronounced “ift”) which stands for “If This Then That”.

IFTTT is a very cool app that allows you to perform a miriad of online tasks automatically.
You can get IFTTT to save any picture you are tagged in FaceBook to Dropbox, or send you an SMS when someone follows you, or automatically reply to anyone that follows you on Twitter, even get IFTTT to call you so you can escape from a bad date!
Literally thousands of possible tasks you could set on auto-pilot and save you countless of hours.

Steps to get IFTTT to alert you of new deals automatically?

  1. Create a free account on IFTTT
  2. Click on Create “New Task”
  3. Click on the blue word “This”
  4. Click on the Craigslist icon from the channel list
  5. Click on the the “New Post from Search” trigger
  6. Go to Craigslist and search for the item you want
  7. Copy the URL address of the Craigslist’s search results page
  8. Paste the URL into IFTTT “Search Result URL” input box and Click the “Create Trigger” button.
  9. Click the blue word “That”
  10. Select the “Email” icon and select the “Send me email” action (Select “SMS” to get alerts on your phone)
  11. You can edit how the email will be formated and then Press the “Create Action” button.
  12. Finally, give your action a title. Click the “Create Task” button and you are done!

From now on, every time someone posts that specific thing you are looking for on Craigslist you IFTTT will send you an email notification automatically. How cool is that?

IFTTT (If This, Then That).

Finish.

I bet you like the idea of using discounted Home Depot store credits to save 30% – 40% on your purchase, but think it’s too much trouble buying them off Craigslist.

OK, I heard you. Let me share a time-saving trick.

Sign up to receive a text message when something on Craigslist fits your liking.

The program I’m talking about is The acronym stands for “IF This Then That”.

This website allows you to automate internet queries. Just like a personal assistant, the site searches Craigslist around the clock until it finds a winner.

Here’s how to set up IFTTT to monitor Craigslist for discounted Home Depot cards:

1. Go to and “Join”. Create an account. Be sure to add the cell number where you’d like to receive the text alert.

2. Create a Recipe . Follow the prompts to create a “recipe” that will look like this

3. Click on “this” to specify you want to monitor Craigslist (the peace sign icon).

4. Choose a “trigger” by clicking the “search for something on Craigslist” option.

– Pick the local Craigslist site you want to monitor.

– In the Craigslist browser, search for “Home Depot card”

– Specify that you’re interested in “all for sale / wanted” by “owner”

– Specify the minimum price of card you’re looking for. (I typically don’t buy anything less than $200.)

5. Copy the URL and return to

6. Paste the URL into the trigger box.

7. Move on to specify “that”, the action you want to happen once the “this” trigger occurs.

8. Click the SMS icon to specify you want text message alerts.

9. Click “Create Recipe” to save your program.

Good job! Now kick back and wait for your first notification. Then take action to cut your expenses.

Here’s how evaluate discounted Home Depot card deals on Craigslist.

I like cards at 30% discounts or better, however your local market might offer better or worse discounts. Just look over a few deals until you get a good read on your market and deal flow.

Run this calculation once you get a notification.

[(Face Value – Price Seller Wants For Card) x 100 ] ÷ Face Value = Percent Discount

For example, if someone is offering a card worth $487.62 for only $350, then you could calculate the card has a 28% discount as follows:

[($487.62 – $350) x 100] ÷ $487.62 = 28%

This is a good offer in my book so I would follow a fail safe procurement process and buy this one.

Happy hunting! Please leave a comment to let me know if this technique helps you save a ton, like it’s helping me.

And, by the way, you can also use to monitor Craigslist to:

1. Learn of new “for rent” ads in your local market. Stay on top of the trends.

2. Shop for used products and appliances and/or supplies.

Be aware of unsolicited attempts to obtain personal information about your identity, online accounts, or money.

What’s important to know

Protect your personal information from identity theft, and learn what to do if you think someone is using your identity, or download an Identity Theft tip sheet for ways to protect your information.

A text scam is any type of unsolicited electronic message that attempts to obtain personal information about your identity, online accounts, or money.

A major problem with text scams is how easy it is to appear to be someone else over text. The technology allows scammers to pretend to be a bank, an email provider or another legitimate company simply by using their name in the text message.

Phishing scams

Phishing scams are attempts to obtain usernames, passwords, and credit card details for malicious reasons by pretending to be a trustworthy, legitimate business.

In phishing scams, the texts or emails appear to be from well-known companies, social websites, banks, online payment processors or IT administrators and are commonly used to lure unsuspecting victims.

  • phishing emails may also contain links to websites that are infected with malicious software that can damage your computer or device

iCloud scams

One of the more recent scams, this ploy aims to trick people into giving up their Apple account password and, from there, hackers can easily access your bank account details, your location and / or other information.

Mystery shopper

This fraud uses text messages, email messages and free online classified websites such Kijiji, Craigslist, Monster and Workopolis to recruit potential victims.

Consumers answer a text message ad to become a mystery shopper. The fake employer then sends a letter with shopping tasks to be completed at a store by the potential mystery shopper.

The “employer” encloses a cheque with the letter to assist with the purchase of goods to fulfil the shopping.

The employee is told to deposit the cheque and keep a portion of the money as payment.

The remaining funds are to be used to send a wire transfer at a money service business like Western Union or MoneyGram to test the procedure and customer service skills.

Eventually, the cheque is returned as counterfeit and the “employee” is accountable to pay for the funds that were wired, typically in the range of $900 to $1,500.

Travel-related scams

A potential victim receives an email or text from a well-known travel company such as Expedia, Air Canada or WestJet advising the individual they’ve won a vacation, they’re a preferred customer and / or have been awarded a credit or discount, if booked immediately.

When the victim responds to the communication, they are asked for a credit card number to pay for fees like taxes to obtain the prize they’ve supposedly won.

Prize-related scams

A victim receives a text or email notifying that they’re the winner of a lottery or sweepstakes prize. However, prior to receiving winnings, the victim must pay an upfront fee. No winnings are ever received.

Distinguish the difference

It’s common to receive legitimate text messages from legitimate companies that are making legitimate offers for their products or services:

  • a common example is a text message from your cellular provider offering deals on data plans or new smartphones

The most important thing to remember is that responsible companies will never ask you to reply to a message with your personal or banking information, or tell you to click on a link.

You should never enter your personal or banking information into a text message, or onto any unverified website. If you need to provide information on a website, be sure it is a website that has https//: in its URL or internet address.

Furthermore, if you are unsure of whether a particular text message is legitimate, your best move is to phone the sender to confirm the authenticity of the message before providing any information or responding.

Economic impacts of text scams

On an individual basis, people typically lose between $1,800 to $4,500 in these various scams.

Limit potential damage

If you have fallen victim to a text scam or provided information you shouldn’t have, it’s important to act quickly to limit any potential damage.

For instance, contact your financial institution immediately and the credit bureau to ensure they don’t give out your contact or credit card information.

Also, you should report the scam to your local police department and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.

Text scam protection

Fraudulent schemes are often done over international borders, making it more difficult for police departments to identify and find the source of the scams.

Although text scams are an illegal and fraudulent activity, the best protection against a scam is being educated about the different types of information scammers are trying to collect. With this knowledge, you can be more aware of what to watch out for and be less likely to give out personal, banking and other sensitive information.

Ask questions

Find out why someone is texting you asking for information and verify the identity of the person requesting the information:

  • get phone numbers and find out if it is the same number if you contacted the company directly

Please remember that if you are notified via a text message about a prize you have won, confirm with the actual source independently and do not click on any links or respond to the message.

Also, never share personal information including credit card numbers via text messages:

  • you should never have to pay an upfront fee to claim a prize

How to set up craigslist alerts (for email or sms)

Towfiqu Photography/Getty Images

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is warning of a dangerous new breed of identity theft scams known as “smishing.” Similar to “phishing” scams — authentic-looking emails that appear to be from the victim’s bank, government agencies, or other well-known organizations — “smishing” scams are text messages sent to mobile phones.

While the risks of smishing scams are potentially devastating, the defense is simple. According to the FTC, “Just don’t text back.”

How the Scammer Sets the Trap

The scarily convincing smishing scams work like this: You get an unexpected text message appearing to be from your bank informing you that your checking account has been hacked into and deactivated “for your protection.” The message will tell you to reply or “text back” in order to reactivate your account. Other smishing scam text messages may include a link to a website you need to visit in order to resolve some non-existent problem.

What a Smishing Scam Text Message Might Look Like

Here is an example of one of the scam texts:

“User #25384: Your Gmail profile has been compromised. Text back SENDNOW in order to reactivate your account.”

What’s the Worst That Can Happen?

Do not respond to suspicious or unsolicited text messages, advises the FTC, warning that at least two bad things might happen if you do:

  • Responding to the text message can allow malware to be installed that will silently collect personal information from your phone. Imagine what an identity thief could do with the information from an online banking or credit card management app. If they don’t use your information themselves, the spammers may sell it to marketers or other identity thieves.
  • You might end up with unwanted charges on your cell phone bill. Depending on your service plan, you may be charged for sending and receiving text messages, even scams.

Yes, Unsolicited Text Messages Are Illegal

Under federal law, it is illegal to send unsolicited text messages or email to mobile devices, including cell phones and pagers without the owner’s permission. In addition, sending unsolicited text or voice mail or telemarketing messages using a mass auto-dialer, so-called “robocalls,” is illegal.

But There Are Exceptions to the Law

In some cases, unsolicited text messages are allowed.

  • If you have established a relationship with a company, it may legally text you things like statements, account activity alerts, warranty information or special offers. In addition, schools are allowed to text informational or emergency messages to parents and students.
  • Political surveys and fundraising messages from charities may be sent as text messages.

How to Deal With Smishing Scam Messages

The FTC advises not to be fooled by smishing scam texts messages. Remember this:

  • None of the government agencies, banks, or other legitimate businesses will ever request personal financial information via text messages.
  • Take your time. Smishing scams work by creating a false sense of urgency by demanding an immediate response.
  • Never click on any links or call any phone numbers in an unsolicited text or email messages.
  • Don’t respond in any way to smishing messages, even to ask the sender to leave you alone. Responding verifies that your phone number is active, which tells the scammer to keep trying.
  • Delete the message from your phone.
  • Report the suspect message to your cell phone service carrier’s spam/scam text reporting number or general customer service number.

Complaints about text message scams can be filed securely online using the FTC’s complaint assistant.

A scam on Craigslist could see you handing over your email account to thieves. Here’s how it works and how to stay safe.

While Craigslist is a popular destination for buying and selling used goods in your area, it’s also prone to a lot of scams. Since Craigslist is an open platform that doesn’t have any kind of verification, people regularly use it to rip others off.

One Craigslist scam involves an attacker trying to break into your Gmail (or other email) account. Here’s how this scam works, how to spot it, and ways you can stay safe.

How Craigslist Handles Email Addresses

By default, Craigslist uses email obfuscation to protect you and the people you contact on the service. When you click on the response button in a listing, Craigslist provides you with an address like the following:

[email protected]

When you send a message to this address, it goes to the actual email inbox of the person who posted the listing. They see a similar address when they respond to your message. This means you can communicate without either person having their actual address exposed.

However, this doesn’t protect anything in the body of your email address, such as the contents of your signature. Many people have their email address, social media links, phone number, or other personal information in their email signatures. As a result, you could end up giving the other person more information than you intended when you respond to a Craigslist listing.

For an honest person, this isn’t a problem. But for someone who wants to take advantage of you, this could let them attack one of your accounts.

How Craigslist Scammers Try to Break Into Your Email

With your email address, phone number, and possibly your name (provided by your email client), the scammer has enough info to try to reset your password. If they know your email address from your signature, they can use it on the account recovery page for your email provider.

While our example focuses on your email account, scammers could act out a similar attack on one of your social accounts, or whatever else is in your signature.

Since they don’t have your password, they’ll try to reset it. Depending on the security options you’ve set up and the recovery options on your account, the scammer will choose the option to send a recovery code to the phone number you provided in your signature, or perhaps a secondary email address.

Depending on where the scammers are located, this message may contain text in a foreign language, too. This is a telltale sign of a scam.

Now, this is where the crux of the scam comes in. After you’ve expressed interest in whatever item the person is selling, they will get back to you, claiming that they want to make sure they’re dealing with a real person because there are a lot of scammers on Craigslist.

To prove you’re real, they ask you to tell them the code that “they” sent you. If you do this, you’ve fallen for the scam. Using this code, the scammers can then reset your email password to whatever they want, locking you out of it.

If You Fall for the Craigslist Scam

In case you fall for this trick, you’ll have to contact Google support (or the support for whatever email provider you use) and attempt to get your account back. But the scammer can do a lot of damage while they’re in your email account, such as resetting the password for other accounts, contacting your friends with fake requests for money, and similar.

You should thus let people know if this happens to you, and contact account support immediately. See our guide on recovering a hacked Gmail account for advice.

How to Protect Against Craigslist Email Scams

After reading through the above scenario, you should be aware of a few ways to keep yourself safe from schemes like this.

First, you should always examine a Craigslist listing before responding to it. Look for signs that it might not be legitimate, such as poor grammar or vague statements. It’s also a good idea to do a reverse image search to see if the images were taken from somewhere else on the internet—a strong sign it’s phony. Legitimate sellers will not use someone else’s pictures in their listing.

However, in our instance, the listed image didn’t appear in a reverse image search. It’s possible that the scammers either broke into a legitimate Craigslist account and took over the listing, or just copied the contents from another post.

Second, you should remove personal information from your email signature. To stay even safer, consider setting up a separate email address that you only use for Craigslist communications. That way, if someone tries to break into it, they won’t have access to the email account you use for everything else.

Also, keep in mind that you should never, ever provide automated recovery codes to someone who asks for them. Anyone who wants you to provide a code like this is trying to steal access to your account.

If you get a recovery code that you did not specifically ask for, someone is most likely trying to break into your account (even if they aren’t actively communicating with you, like in this situation). You should change your password for that account and keep an eye out for further alerts.

It’s a good idea to make sure you have recovery options updated for your most important accounts. If you do end up losing access, having additional trusted email addresses or phone numbers will give you more options to get it back.

Finally, you should also enable two-factor authentication (2FA) on all your accounts. This makes it harder for an unauthorized user to reset your password. Prefer a method like an authenticator app when you set up 2FA, as those are less susceptible to hijacking or social engineering than SMS or email recovery codes.

Avoid Craigslist Scams and Protect Your Email Accounts

We’ve looked at one type of Craigslist email scam that you must watch out for. Giving attackers too much info about yourself, combined with handing over an important recovery code, will lead to thieves taking over your email account. Always exercise caution when dealing with Craigslist listings, and don’t hand over sensitive account info like recovery codes to people who ask for it.

Unfortunately, these aren’t the only online scams you need to watch for, though.

If you’re desperate for work or a better paid job you could be fooled employment scams. Here’s what to look out for and stay safe.

Craig’s List Fraud

Advertisements have been posted on Craigslist as part of member recruitment scams nationwide. The ads solicit current credit union members and offer $75.00 or more for their assistance with qualifying a new member. This scam is targeting credit unions and members across the country.

The following are samples of Craigslist ads target credit union members for this recruitment scam:

If you’re a ABC Credit Union Member MAKE SOME EXTRA $$

This is NOT a scam! I am willing to call you and discuss extensively! I need a ABC Credit Union Member to sponsor me into the credit union. I am willing to pay $100 USD for this service. Please email me and we can discuss this in detail. This is a 1 day process and I want to become a member for investment account/interest rate purposes.

Need to find a XYZ Credit Union Member

I was just approved for a visa credit card with XYZ Federal Credit Union and they called me and said that they can not process the application if I do not know any existing member or if I am not employed at one of the list of companies they have. To become a member you have to know a member. So now my app is on hold until I can find someone who is already a member. If you know someone, please tell them to contact me. I am willing to pay $500. And all they ask for is the members’ name and member number. Thanks.

This is a scam – do not give out your personal information. If you see any of these messages on craiglist which mention Cal State L.A., please notify us with the URL or 10 digit message ID. Additionally, you can email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. . Be sure to include the URL (or 10-digit post ID number) in your message. Most importantly, do not respond to the scammer.

Text Messaging Fraud

Text messaging fraud is a new way criminals are using technology to try to get you to divulge your account information. In this scam, text messages are sent to random or sequential numbers by fraudsters with the same intent as ‘phishing’ email – to get you to divulge your account number, passwords, credit and debit card numbers, expiration dates and PINs.

SMS Phishing or ‘Smishing’ text messages may include a link to a fraudulent website, or a phone number to an automated system that prompts you for your account information. If you get such a message, DO NOT RESPOND. In the event you have responded to a message like this, please contact the credit union immediately. Cal State L.A. Federal Credit Union does not send out unsolicited text messages.

Phishing (Email Fraud)

Many consumers are tricked into divulging their personal information by thieves posing as legitimate companies or government agencies. This new brand of criminal sends emails that appear to be from the victim’s financial institution, or other trusted source. The emails stress the urgency of providing personal information such as credit card numbers, checking account information, Social Security numbers, passwords, and other sensitive personal information, and link to fraudulent websites for collecting the information.

ATM Fraud

Due to increased security in credit card and Internet transactions, traditional targets of electronic theft, many thieves are turning to other options to steal money. Skimmers are one of the most popular methods that thieves use, but they employ others as well. For example, they may tamper with security cameras or simply peer over your shoulder as you are using the ATM. Some thieves even set up their own, fake ATMs in out-of-the-way locations.

Information technology supporting patient self-management has the potential to foster shared accountability for healthcare outcomes by improving patient adherence. There is growing interest in providing alerts and reminders to patients to improve healthcare self-management. This paper describes a literature review of automated alerts and reminders directed to patients, the technology used, and their efficacy.

An electronic literature search was conducted in PubMed to identify relevant studies. The search produced 2418 abstracts; 175 articles underwent full-text review, of which 124 were rejected. 51 publications were included in the final analysis and coding.

The articles are partitioned into alerts and reminders. A summary of the analysis for the 51 included articles is provided.

Reminders and alerts are advantageous in many ways; they can be used to reach patients outside of regular clinic settings, be personalized, and there is a minimal age barrier in the efficacy of automated reminders sent to patients. As technologies and patients’ proficiencies evolve, the use and dissemination of patient reminders and alerts will also change.

Practice Implications

Automated technology may reliably assist patients to adhere to their health regimen, increase attendance rates, supplement discharge instructions, decrease readmission rates, and potentially reduce clinic costs.

1. Introduction

Using information technology (IT) to support patient self-management has the potential to foster shared accountability for healthcare outcomes by improving patient adherence to healthcare regimens. When delivered at the point of care to clinical providers, IT interventions in the form of alerts and reminders have been shown to contribute to improved health outcomes.[1, 2] Currently the majority of alerts have been developed for clinicians to assist them in clinical care management. However, there is growing interest in providing alerts and reminders to patients in order to improve healthcare self-management. Leveraging IT to foster patient engagement in their healthcare regimen may be particularly significant, as a patient only spends a small amount of time in a clinical environment. Increasing the reach of support and guidance of providers from the clinical environment to patient’s daily lives can encourage patients to incorporate health behaviors into their daily routines.[3, 4]

Given that clinical decision support (CDS) elements have benefitted patients when employed in the healthcare environment, it is important to examine the utility when provided to patients outside of the healthcare environment. Providing IT tools to patients and caregivers can facilitate shared accountability for disease management between the healthcare provider and patient.[5] This paper describes a literature review of automated alerts and reminders provided directly to the clinical domains in which they are employed, the technology used, and their efficacy.

1.1 Background

According to the American Medical Informatics Association (2006), CDS provides “clinicians, patients or individuals with knowledge and person-specific or population information, intelligently filtered or presented at appropriate times, to foster better health processes, better individual patient care, and better population health.”[6] CDS enhances decision-making through the use of technology by processing individualized data with an inference mechanism that can generate and deliver relevant information at critical time or interaction points.[7] Alerts and reminders are among the most successful and widely deployed components of CDS that provide timely and relevant information which have the potential to improve health outcomes.[6] A CDS system uses logical software programming that consists of facts and rules, and if conditions are met, an alert or reminder is triggered to notify the intended user of the information contained in the alert. Alerts and reminders are informatics interventions typically delivered through an electronic health record (EHR), a digital record of patient data, but can also include paper mailings and brochures.

Alerts have been used to notify a physician of a contraindicating condition like an allergy, interaction with another medication or supplement (immediate alert), or to prompt a clinician to respond to an abnormal lab value (event-driven alert).[8] Reminders have been used to notify clinicians and patients about appointments like preventive screenings or vaccinations.[9] Alerts and reminders are delivered in several ways that reflect the urgency of the information from a conspicuous pop-up box or text message, which usually indicates that the alert is important, to something as subtle as a change in font that can designate a difference between a generic or brand name medication.[9]

When directly provided to patients, alerts and reminders not only cue patients to complete a desired behavior but can also foster shared accountability and patient autonomy in their heath care management. Currently, there are no reviews that survey direct automated alerts and reminders for patients. This review of the literature on the use of automated alerts and reminders targeted to patients provides an overview of how these interventions have been used, and discusses possible outcomes. Additionally, this review discusses the use of healthcare IT to directly benefit patients.

Medication adherence and management are problematic behaviors for clinicians and researchers to measure and evaluate. However, health IT can improve adherence by both reminding patients to take their medications (execution adherence) and reducing compromised execution of medication use.[10]

2. Methods

2.1 Data Sources and Inclusion Criteria

An electronic literature search was conducted in the PubMed database to identify studies on electronic interventions in the form of alerts and reminders targeted specifically for patients. No date filter was initially applied in order to determine the depth of the literature retrieved. The final search was conducted on June 17, 2013. The inclusion and exclusion criteria ( Table 1 ), search terms ( Table 2 ), and how terms were applied ( Figure 1 ) are displayed below.

Craigslist shut down their RSS feed in October 2020, which prevents this application from working. It appears that they have also blocked scraping from EC2 machines, so this project is deprecated (until downloader.ex is rewritten)

Once upon a time, I needed to furnish a rental property. I wanted great deals on nice furniture, but did not wish to spend time browsing Craigslist.

So I created a service to text me whenever a CL post matched my interests.

Now, I still use this application to get notified of deals on electronics, gadgets and misc free stuff. I am able to act quickly, while not wasting too much of my time. I hope that you can make use of this as well.

There are three dependencies required for execution:

  • Elixir environment. It’s hailed as “the next Ruby” but I view it more as “the next Python”
  • Redis for in-memory database
  • Twilio account for sending SMS. The trial account that I created lasted me 11 months

Here’s a quick overview of the main modules:

  • parser.ex takes the watchlist file (discussed next) and turns it into a more computer-friendly format
  • downloader.ex and extractor.ex fetch and transform the relevant Craigslist posts
  • storer.ex keeps a record of previously-seen items, which prevents duplicate notifications, and mass spamming when new entries are added to the watchlist
  • notifier.ex generates and sends the text
  • periodically.ex is the heartbeat of the application
  1. Configuration is done with a JSON file

You can determine CL categories via URLs in craigslist search, or from this gist Otherwise, “sss” is the default category for craigslist search

If you like to buy stuff on the popular Craigslist website, you have probably noticed that it is not the easiest site to navigate and use. When it comes to monitoring specific searches for items that you are interested in, you can use Craigslist’s RSS feature to do just that. If you do not know what RSS is, or do not want to use an RSS reader for that purpose, you are left with running the searches manually ever so often.

Craigslist Notification for the Google Chrome browser integrates another option into the Internet browser that Craigslist users can make use of to monitor item searches on the site.

The Chrome extension adds a single icon to the browser’s address bar that acts as an indicator when new items have been posted on Craigslist. The extension by default will check all saved searches every 30 minutes on the Craigslist site, to see if new items have been added since the last check.

A Save Search is added to all Craigslist search pages that you can use to add a specific search to the list of search terms that you are monitoring on the site.

How to set up craigslist alerts (for email or sms)

A click on the extension icon in the browser’s address bar opens a menu that is listing all saved searches, new items that have been posted on Craigslist, and options to open all or only select searches directly on the Craigslist website. The developers of the extension plan to integrate SMS notifications in a future version. According to the announcement page, these will cost $3.99 per month when available. It is likely that SMS notifications will only be supported in the United States though.

Chrome users who like to buy products on Craigslist may find the Craigslist Notification extension for their browser useful, provided that they are not already using RSS feeds for the very same purpose.

An intuitive and user-friendly software utility that send you instant notifications from Craigslist, according to the filters you previously set up

Craigslist is a popular web-based platform that enables users to post a wide range of announcements related to housing, jobs, selling or buying items and many more. The service is available worldwide, and if you are looking to find a new job or a new house, and you want to be informed whenever a suitable announcement is posted, you can rely on Craigslist Notifier.

The application installs smoothly and due to its highly intuitive graphic interface, even those who are not PC experts can easily find their way around it.

Basically, you need to first choose the country and region you are interested in, then narrow it down by also specifying the category: for sale, community, housing, personals, services, jobs or gigs.

You can further limit the available results by entering the minimum and the maximum prices you are looking for, while also excluding the posts that do not feature an image.

Additionally, you can save the search criteria as a separate file so you can rely on it for future searches, thus saving a lot of time you would otherwise spend entering all the details all over again.

Once you have come up with the ideal configuration regarding the search criteria, you can start looking for posts that match your requirements and monitor them. You can adjust the check interval and you can also set Craigslist Notifier to send the alerts to your email inbox, so as to make sure you do not miss them; you can also choose to receive them via SMS.

All in all, Craigslist Notifier can be of great use to all those who rely on Craigslist to find valuable items for sale in their current area of residence. Nonetheless, a license will need to be purchased by those who want to unlock the full functions of the application.
