An eSIM is a digital SIM that allows you to activate a cellular plan from your carrier without having to use a physical nano-SIM. How can you use Dual SIM?

  • Use one number for business and another number for personal calls.
  • Add a local data plan when you travel outside of the country or region.
  • Have separate voice and data plans.

With iOS 13 and later, both of your phone numbers can make and receive voice and FaceTime calls and send and receive messages using iMessage, SMS, and MMS. 2 Your iPhone can use one cellular data network at a time.

If you want to use 5G with Dual SIM on iPhone 12, iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12 Pro, or iPhone 12 Pro Max, make sure that you have iOS 14.5 or later.

What you need

  • An iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, iPhone XR, or later with iOS 12.1 or later
  • A wireless carrier that supports eSIM

To use two different carriers, your iPhone must be unlocked. Otherwise, both plans must be from the same carrier. If a CDMA carrier provides your first SIM, your second SIM won’t support CDMA. Contact your carrier for more information.

If you have an enterprise or corporate cellular service plan, check with your company administrator to see if they support this feature.

Set up your cellular plan with eSIM

On iPhone 13 Pro Max, iPhone 13 Pro, iPhone 13, and iPhone 13 mini, you can use two eSIMs for two or more cellular plans—two active at the same time—or a physical nano-SIM for a cellular plan and an eSIM for one or more other cellular plans.

On iPhone 12 models, iPhone 11 models, iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and iPhone XR, you can use a physical nano-SIM for a cellular plan and an eSIM for one or more other cellular plans. If you don’t have a nano-SIM and your carrier supports it, an eSIM can serve as your only cellular plan. The eSIM provided by your carrier is stored digitally in your iPhone.

You can store more than one eSIM in your iPhone, but you can use only one at a time. To switch eSIMs, tap Settings, tap either Cellular or Mobile Data, and then tap the plan you want to use. Then tap Turn On This Line.

Label your plans

After your second plan is activated, label your plans. For example, you can label one plan Business and the other plan Personal.

You’ll use these labels when you choose which phone number to use for making or receiving calls and messages, to designate a number for cellular data, and to assign a number to your contacts so you know which number you will use.

If you change your mind later, you can change your labels by going to Settings, tapping either Cellular or Mobile Data, and then tapping the number whose label you want to change. Then tap Cellular Plan Label and select a new label or enter a custom label.

Set your default number

Choose a number to use when you call or send a message to someone who isn’t in your Contacts app. With iOS 13 and later, choose which cellular plans you want to use for iMessage and FaceTime. With iOS 13 and later, you can choose either or both numbers.

On this screen, choose a number to be your default, or you can choose which number is to be used only for cellular data. Your other number will be your default. If you want your iPhone to use cellular data from both plans, depending on coverage and availability, turn on Allow Cellular Data Switching.

Use two phone numbers for calls, messages, and data

Now that your iPhone is set up with two phone numbers, here’s how to use them.

How to set up dual sim cards on the iphone xs max and xr

Let your iPhone remember which number to use

When you call one of your contacts, you don’t need to choose which number to use every time. By default, your iPhone uses the same number that you used the last time you called that contact. If you haven’t called that contact, your iPhone uses your default number. You can also specify which number to use for your calls with a contact. Follow these steps:

  1. Tap the contact.
  2. Tap Preferred Cellular Plan.
  3. Tap the number you want to use with that contact.

Make and receive calls

You can make and receive phone calls with either phone number.

With iOS 13 and later, when you’re on a call, if the carrier for your other phone number supports Wi-Fi calling, you can answer incoming calls on your other number. When you’re on a call using a line that isn’t your designated line for cellular data, you need to turn on Allow Cellular Data Switching to receive calls from your other line. If you ignore the call and you have voicemail set up with your carrier, you’ll get a missed-call notification and the call will go to voicemail. Check with your carrier for Wi-Fi calling availability and find out whether additional fees or data usage applies from your data provider.

If you’re on a call and your other line shows No Service, either your carrier doesn’t support Wi-Fi calling or you don’t have Wi-Fi calling turned on. 3 It could also mean Allow Cellular Data Switching is not turned on. When you’re on a call, an incoming call on your other phone number will go to voicemail if you set up voicemail with your carrier. 4 However, you won’t get a missed-call notification from your secondary number. Call Waiting works for incoming calls on the same phone number. To avoid missing an important call, you can turn on call forwarding and forward all calls from one number to the other. Check with your carrier for availability and to find out whether additional fees apply.

The new iPhone X series—the XS, XS Max, and XR—are the first iPhones to ship with dual SIM tech capabilities. This wasn’t enabled out of the box, but came with the yesterday’s 12.1 update. Here’s what that means.

For dual SIM support, the new iPhone X series phones use a traditional SIM tray for its primary number and an eSIM for the secondary account. While we have a deeper explainer of what that means here, the long and short is that you can’t just pop a pair of SIM cards in your phone and have it work.

Instead, your second carrier needs to support eSIM tech and you need to set it up yourself. The good news is that it’s stupid-easy to set up your second carrier. Here’s how.

Note: The primary carriers uses the traditional SIM slot. Only the secondary carrier can use the eSIM slot, so if you only have one carrier then you don’t need to do anything. It’s also worth mentioning that this isn’t yet available on Verizon—more info on that here.

First, jump into the Settings menu. From there, choose the Cellular option.

We reported that Dual SIM support for iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and iPhone XR would be coming in a software update later this year. With today’s release of iOS 12.1, Apple is now officially supporting Dual SIM and eSIM on the latest round of iPhones.

Follow along to learn how….

The setup process for setting up eSIM is similar that of cellular-enabled iPads, which also sports an eSIM. On iPhone, however, you’re able to use multiple SIMs with a combination of eSIM and a physical nano-SIM. For users in China, Apple offers a special version of iPhone XS Max and iPhone XR that supports two physical SIMs but does not support eSIM.

Fortunately, the process is pretty straight forward and applies to both eSIM and activating a second physical SIM.

How to enable eSIM and Dual SIM on iPhone XS or iPhone XR

  1. Go to Settings >Cellular.
  2. Tap Add Cellular Plan.
  3. Use your iPhone to scan the QR code that your carrier provided.

If you’re setting up a second SIM, you’ll be asked how you’d like the feature to work. Some examples include using your secondary SIM as data only, or having separate work and home lines on the same phone.

How to set up dual sim cards on the iphone xs max and xr

Depending on carrier, you may need to enter a confirmation code to enable eSIM. If the QR code isn’t working you can optimally manually enter the eSIM information provided by your carrier.

Some carriers will require you to download their app. For that, simply go to the App Store and download the aforementioned app. This method is typically used with pre-paid carriers as you’ll be purchasing the plan directly from within the app.

Unlike physical SIMs, you’ll be able to store multiple eSIMs on your iPhone, however, you’ll be limited to using one at a time. Apple says:

You can store more than one eSIM in your iPhone, but you can use only one at a time. You can switch eSIMs by tapping Settings > Cellular > Cellular Plans and tapping the plan you want to use. Then tap Turn On This Line.

Unfortunately, eSIM adoption seems to be a mixed bag at the moment. While the three major U.S carriers: Verizon, T-Mobile, and AT&T announced support for the feature, all three have seemingly pulled out, noting that support for eSIM is coming later this year. This means no major carrier in the U.S. is currently supporting this feature. Outside of the U.S., support is limited but you can check here to see if your carrier support the feature.

How to set up dual sim cards on the iphone xs max and xr

When Apple pushed iOS version 12.1.1 users gained the ability to use the iPhone XR, XS, and XS Max’s in a dual-SIM configuration.

Dual-SIM support allows you to use two active accounts on a single device. It’s a popular move internationally, but this technology doesn’t make it into U.S. phones very often. If you’re planning to give it a shot, know that your device might look a little differently than before—and come with a few extra settings you’ll want to pay attention to.

For starters, using two cellular plans at once means you’ll have two signal bars with two carrier logos at the top of the screen. Since you have two numbers, you’ll have to pick what number to use before making a call or sending a text. According to AT&T, you can only use the data plan for one number at any given time, but you can switch between your plans and start a new session at any time.

Dual-SIM support has been available internationally on the new iPhone models for the last couple of months, so there are a few videos on YouTube that can show you what it’s like using a phone with two SIMs set up. (One thing to keep in mind: These videos use the Hong Kong version of the iPhone, which supports two physical nano-SIM cards. The North American version only supports a single nano-SIM card and eSIM, so just ignore anything about using two physical cards.)

First up, YouTube channel Techranium shows you how to set up a secondary eSIM, and shows off how you pick which number to use when you’re making a call or sending a text message.

This longer video from HowTechs goes a little more in-depth. It shows what the cellular menu looks like when you have two plans, including how to select or swap which account you’re using for data. It also shows some little stuff, like what having two signal bars looks like when your phone is locked.

Between those two, you’re going to see most, if not all, the ways that having a dual-SIM setup will affect how your iPhone works. It sounds a lot crazier than it really is.

Sometimes a single phone number isn’t enough — if you need to go abroad, for example, or need separate business and personal numbers, two is definitely better than one. Until recently, unless your phone could accommodate two SIMs, you were out of luck. However, Apple has now made it possible for owners of an iPhone XR, iPhone XS, or iPhone XS Max to add a second line of service by using an eSIM (or digital SIM), bypassing the need for a physical SIM card.

This will let you easily add a local carrier if you travel internationally. You can even have two different plans on the same phone — say, one for voice and messages and one for data. Three major vendors currently offer eSIM capabilities: AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile.

If you want to add an eSIM to your iPhone, and are either a customer of one of those three carriers (or are willing to become one), here’s how to do it.

A few things to keep in mind before you start. First, this is not a free service — you’re purchasing a second line, with all the expenses that go with it. Your phone also needs to be running iOS 12.1.1 or later. And if you want to have plans from two different carriers, your phone must be unlocked. Otherwise, both your SIMs will have to be from the same carrier.

First, you will need to purchase a new eSIM account via the AT&T website, You’re going to need your device’s IMEI number (the unique number that identifies your specific phone). To locate it, tap on Settings, then General, and then About.

Once you’ve purchased the eSIM plan, you’ll want to set up your phone for dual SIMs.

Go to Settings, Cellular, and Add Cellular Plan. Scan the QR code from your carrier with your phone. Then look at the bottom of your screen, and tap Enter Details Manually. Select Add Cellular Plan and you’ll see both your previous plan and the new plan; you can label them as you wish (“Personal” and “Work,” for example). Hit Done, and on the next screen choose which line you want to be your default.

Note that while both phone numbers can be active at the same time (so you can be on a call with one and get a call from the other), you can only use one data plan at a time. If you want to switch to the data plan you’re using, go to your Cellular menu, choose Cellular Data and then select Cellular Data Switching.

And if you use FirstNet, AT&T’s service for first responders, be aware that, according to AT&T, the second SIM may interfere with the first SIM’s connectivity.

Verizon

If you’re using Verizon, you can perform the entire process from the My Verizon app. Open the app and tap Join Now and then Get Started.

The next stage in the process is to locate and register your IMEI by going to Settings, then General, and then About. Scroll to the Digital SIM IMEI, and copy it by tapping and holding.

You’ve got the number; now you have to go back to your My Verizon app, tap the field that reads Digital SIM IMEI Number, paste in the IMEI by tapping and holding, and then hit Check eligibility. (Note: Pre-pay plans will not work with the eSIM.)

Assuming you’re eligible, you’ll then get a series of screens that will lead you through the process of activating your new service, including selecting a phone number (if you’re coming from another service, you can port over your existing number), creating a PIN, and — oh, yes — entering your billing information. Once that’s done, you’ll get an email with a QR code. On your iPhone, go to Settings, Cellular, and Add Cellular Plan, and then scan the QR code from the email so you can do the final account setup.

Phew! Done. Congratulations, you now have two phone numbers (and two data plans) on the same iPhone.

T-Mobile

T-Mobile currently only supports eSIM on its prepaid plans, although the company says it will support postpaid plans in the future. Existing T-Mobile customers who want to add a second line to an existing phone are advised to use T-Mobile’s DIGITS plan, which lets you access up to five lines from one device.

To get going, you download the T-Mobile eSIM app from the App Store (assuming you don’t have it already) and choose T-Mobile eSIM from the home screen. Enter your email (if your email address is already being used for an existing T-Mobile plan, you’ll need a different address). Tap on Next and either confirm or enter your zip code. Choose Done, Next, and confirm your address. After that, you’ll be asked to choose a prepaid option, let T-Mobile know you accept the service plan, enter your payment information, choose a PIN, and label your new account.

At this point, you may get a notice saying that you’re choosing an uncertified cellular plan. Don’t sweat it; just hit OK and go on to the next screen, which will let you choose your default plan. And that’s it.

Update December 17th, 1:46PM ET: We updated this article to add information on T-Mobile’s eSIM plans.

What is an eSim?

An eSIM is a digital SIM that allows you to activate a mobile data plan from your operator without having to use a traditional card.

It relies on a tiny chip inside your Apple device, which is activated once you add a plan.

What do I need?

  • An iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, or iPhone XR with an iOS12.1 or later installed.
  • A QR code or app from an eSIM-compatible carrier.

What do I need to do?

There are four ways to set up and activate your eSIM. Some devices use dual SIM, meaning that you can set up an eSIM as the second SIM associated with your phone.

Let’s take a look at the four different ways you can set up your eSIM on an iPhone or iPad.

  • Rename eSIMs: you can rename each eSIM to differentiate them from each other. To change the name you can go to Settings, Mobile data, click on the eSIM, then on the Data plan label and select a new name.
  • Delete your eSIM: Just go to Settings, Mobile data, click on the plan you want to delete, click on Delete your mobile data plan. Deleting the eSIM from your phone does not necessarily mean that your data plan will be cancelled, so we recommend contacting the data provider first.

You can find more information about Using Dual SIM with an eSIM on Apple’s support page.

How to set up an eSIM on iPad

You must have an iPad that supports eSIM: either an iPad Pro from 2018 onwards or an iPad Air 2019. Your device must be able to use mobile data, not just WiFi.

What do I need?

  • An iPad Pro 2018 or later or an iPad Air (always in its WIFI + Cellular options) with an iOS12.1 or later installed.
  • A QR code or an app from an eSIM compatible phone operator.

What do I need to do?

Just like with an iPhone, you can scan a QR code from your carrier, use your carrier’s app on the iPad to set up your eSIM, or do it manually.

Scan a QR code (provided by the operator)

Go to Settings, Mobile Data, Add Mobile Data Plan, use the iPad to scan the QR code. Here you might also be asked for a confirmation code to activate the eSIM – ask your provider for this information.

Use an operator’s app

Download your provider’s mobile app and use it to buy a mobile data plan.

Do it manually

Go to Settings, Mobile Data, and Set Up Mobile Data if you are adding a plan for the first time. If you’re adding another plan, go to Settings, Mobile data, and Add a new plan.

The next step is to Select an operator, if you don’t find the one you want, contact them via their customer servoce. Choose the plan and create an account or add the iPad to an existing plan, then confirm.

What you need to know:

  • Transfer your plan from one iPad to another: You can move your eSIM plan between iPads by going to Settings, Mobile Data, Set Up Mobile Data and click the Transfer button and the provider you want to you.

The new Dual SIM Dual Standby feature could be a game-changer — if Apple can work through some hitches.

How to set up dual sim cards on the iphone xs max and xr

When Apple announced the new iPhone XS, XS Max and XR on Sept. 12, one particular feature captured the imagination of international travelers and multiple phone-owners alike: the dual SIM.

How to set up dual sim cards on the iphone xs max and xrJosh Miller/CNET

If the processor is your phone’s brain, then the SIM, or subscriber identity module, is its soul — a tiny little chip that stores your phone number and connects you to a cellular network. Essentially, it’s what makes your phone a phone.

If you’ve ever wanted two phone lines on one device, Apple’s new Dual SIM Dual Standby technology could be a life-changer. It will make it much more practical to have two phone numbers on one phone — one for business, another for personal use. And it will make it considerably easier and less expensive to use your own phone when traveling abroad.

iPhones have always had one “plastic” SIM card — until now.

On Oct. 30, Apple released iOS 12.1 , turning on support for its eSIM technology — which allows you to activate additional lines — on the iPhone XS , iPhone XS Max and iPhone XR (outside of China). After an initial delay due to issues including “degraded” service and problems linked to visual voicemail, AT&T and Verizon have now begun to support eSIM on the newest iPhones. (T-Mobile has said that it expects to add the feature before the end of the year.)

After some initial hiccups due to technical issues , Apple and some of the largest US carriers have now worked through the kinks of deploying dual-SIM via eSIM. And though it won’t be the decisive factor for most phone shoppers this year, Apple’s support marks a major step closer into the mainstream for dual-SIM phones. Below is a digest of what we currently know about Apple’s take on dual-SIM and eSIM — and what it means for the three 2018 iPhones.

Note: The information presented below represents our current understanding of an evolving technology. If you’re buying an iPhone XS, XS Max or XR to take advantage of dual-SIM and eSIM technology, you’ll need to buy an unlocked phone (see below). Check with your provider before committing to a purchase.

What does Apple’s dual-SIM announcement mean?

The 2018 iPhones will let you have have two different phone numbers on the same phone. You’ll be able to make and receive calls and send and receive texts on either line.

Why would I want a dual-SIM phone?

There are two major benefits. You can have two different phone lines — say, one for business and another for personal use — without the burden of carrying two phones. And when traveling internationally, dual SIM makes it easier to add a local plan to your phone to avoid costly international roaming and data charges.

So, the iPhones will have both an eSIM and a plastic SIM?

Yes. The new iPhones will have a traditional plastic nano-SIM, the familiar hardware-based SIM chip that identifies you to your carrier network, and an eSIM, the newer software-based equivalent.

And here’s the big thing: The eSIM can accommodate multiple phone numbers — which you can add, delete and configure right from your iPhone’s settings. In contrast, a plastic SIM needs to be physically removed and swapped.

In theory, once eSIM technology is widely supported by carriers in the US and internationally, Apple could phase out the plastic SIM entirely. For now, by giving the 2018 iPhones both a plastic SIM and eSIM, Apple is covering all of the bases.

iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, iPhone XR: See Apple’s biggest phones ever

What is Dual SIM Dual Standby?

Apple’s take on dual SIM is called Dual SIM Dual Standby. It means that the new iPhones can manage two phone lines simultaneously — calls coming in to either line will ring your phone, and you’ll be able to easily make calls and send texts from either line without reconfiguring settings or swapping out SIM cards .

Note that you won’t be able to send and receive data on both lines simultaneously, however. If one line is on a call, incoming calls to the other number will go to voicemail.

How is eSIM different from Apple SIM?

Originally known as Apple SIM, the first version of Apple’s software-based SIM showed up on the LTE-enabled iPad and Apple Watch Series 3. We believe the fundamental technology is the same, but iOS 12 has introduced improvements to the user interface.

Can I add lines from different carriers?

Yes. Apple says that you can add lines from two different carriers, but only if your iPhone is unlocked. And this is the major catch. If your phone is not unlocked, both plans must be from the same carrier. And, if a CDMA carrier — such as Verizon, Sprint, US Cellular, Boost and Virgin — provides your first SIM, your second SIM won’t support CDMA.

Can I use eSIM on a locked iPhone?

When you buy an iPhone directly from Apple, online or at an Apple store, it’s unlocked — meaning that it can be configured for and activated on any carrier’s network (e.g. AT&T, Verizon, Sprint). A Genius inserts an AT&T SIM, for example, activates your phone on AT&T’s network, and you’re off to the races.

But once a phone is locked, your options become much more limited. As my colleague Maggie Reardon explains, “A locked phone has a software code on it that prevents you from using it on another network. An unlocked phone either doesn’t have the software lock on it or someone was able to get a code that unlocks the software. Once a device is unlocked, you can pop out the SIM card and put in a different SIM and get service.” Most carriers require you to fully pay of your phone before they’ll unlock it, and other restrictions may apply. (AT&T’s Unlock Portal provides a checklist of requirements for unlocking your phone and switching to another carrier.)

An unlocked phone with a plastic SIM needs a new plastic SIM in order to switch to a new carrier. An eSIM, on the other hand, can accommodate multiple SIM profiles from multiple carriers. Until now, eSIM hasn’t garnered much support from carriers, who are understandably wary of making it easier for customers to activate another carrier’s service.

For the first time ever, Apple has announced iPhones with Dual SIM functionality. The new iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max have this built-in, but in most places it won’t necessarily be what you might expect.

See, the iPhones come with just one physical SIM slot as usual. It’s just that this is augmented with an eSIM. So if at least one of the carriers you intend to use supports the eSIM standard, then you can take advantage of the Dual SIM function. Otherwise, you’re out of luck.

The good news is that more and more carriers should start waking up to the eSIM reality. The bad news is that, at the moment, the list is very short: only 14 networks across 10 countries support this standard, along with worldwide service providers GigSky and Truphone.

How to set up dual sim cards on the iphone xs max and xr

Note that to use two different carriers, your iPhone must be unlocked. If a CDMA-based carrier (such as Verizon or Sprint in the US) provides your first SIM, then your second SIM will not support CDMA.

To use the eSIM you will activate your cellular plan with a QR code provided by your carrier. You can store more than one eSIM in your device, but can only use one at a time.

How to set up dual sim cards on the iphone xs max and xr

If you buy an iPhone XS Max in China, Hong Kong, or Macau, none of the above applies. Over there Apple will provide a special SKU of its biggest handset ever, one which comes with a proper Dual SIM setup. As you can see from the image above, the two cards will basically sit on top of each other in the slot.

Both systems use Dual SIM Dual Standby, which lets you make and receive calls on both lines. Note though that if one number is on a call, incoming calls on the other number will go to voicemail. Also, if you are active on a voice number that isn’t your designated data number, data will not work while your are on the call.

As with other Dual SIM solutions on the market, Apple lets you label each SIM card, as well as choose a default line. The secondary line can be used for data only – a handy option if you’re traveling and pick up a local SIM just for that purpose.

For each contact you call the iPhone will choose the same number you used last time. If you haven’t called before, then your default number will be used. Yet if you want you can specify which subscription to use for a specific contact.

How to set up dual sim cards on the iphone xs max and xr

If you would like to use dual SIM on iPhone XS and XS Max then you’re in the right spot. The new range of iPhones – iPhone XS, XS Max, and XR – was announced not long ago and surprisingly, we saw an unexpected dual SIM support. First ever in any iPhone ever made. However, the dual SIM support on the three new iPhones came with a twist. Unlike the standard dual SIM we see on other Smartphones that come with dual Nano SIM slots or Micro and Nano SIM slots like we are used to. The three new iPhone comes with standard Nano SIM and an eSIM (or virtual SIM), similar to the Google Pixel 2 and 2XL. If you don’t know what an eSIM is, we’ve given a detailed explanation about it. Just continue reading…

How To Use Dual SIM On iPhone XS and XS Max

The Dual SIM support on the iPhone XS and XS Max comes with one Nano SIM and one eSIM. If it had come with two Dual Nano SIM then the process will be a lot more easier as you could easily just pull out the SIM tray, Slot in your SIM and boom! You’re in business. You can still do that here with the iPhone XS and XS Max but with only one SIM. The Sim tray is located at the side of the device for the physical Nano SIM while the eSIM which stands for embedded SIM has evidently been embedded inside the phone.

To set up the eSIM on your iPhone XS or XS Max you’ll first have to make sure that the network provider you’re about to use supports the use of eSIM. If not, then you’ll need to find another mobile operator that does if you want to use dual SIM cards on your iPhone. Currently, only about 10 countries in the world have mobile operators with support for eSIM. If You’re luckily in any of those 10 countries then all you have to is follow the steps below.

How To Use eSIM on iPhone XS and XS Max

Chances are, you already know how to set up the Nano SIM card part as your previous phone probably uses that and you only need help with the eSIM part which is relatively new. To set up the eSIM, you can use a QR code which is obtainable from any mobile operator with support for eSIM.

– On your iPhone XS or XS Max, Go to the Settings Menu by Tapping on the Settings App.

– Click on Cellular and Tap on Add Cellular Plan.

– This will use the camera to scan the QR code provided by your carrier provider. Be sure to point the camera to the QR Code.

– Once the scan is complete, you might be required to input a code which will also be provided to you by your carrier provided.

Alternatively, you can download the carrier’s app and activate it from within the app. Just go to your app store, Download the carrier’s app, from there you can activate it by purchasing a Cellular plan.

The procedure to use Dual SIM on iPhone XS and XS Max is a fairly easy one as your carrier provider should also guide you through the process, especially with the new eSIM. If you run into any trouble while setting up the eSIM, be sure to leave us a comment down below and we will see to it.

How to set up dual sim cards on the iphone xs max and xr

Apple says it will roll out the dual-SIM functionality for its new iPhone models by the end of this year

  • iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, iPhone XR are the first dual-SIM iPhone models
  • Users will be able to set up multiple eSIM profiles on the same phone
  • But a maximum of two numbers can be used at one time

The Apple event last night marked the debut of dual-SIM functionality on iPhone models, a feature users have been clamouring for in markets such as China and India for years. With two SIMs available to them, iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and iPhone XR users will be able to use two numbers at the same time. Unlike the dual-SIM setups we have seen in Android phones for several years now, there will be no secondary SIM slot in the new iPhone XS and iPhone XR models, except in China, Hong Kong, and Macau. Instead, the three new models will adopt the eSIM standard, which lets telecom operators set up a second SIM remotely by pushing a user’s credentials onto the device. Here’s how the dual-SIM function on the new iPhone models will work.

First of all, dual-SIM functionality will not be available out of the box on any of the three new iPhones. Apple will enable this later this year with a software update. An eSIM is soldered onto each phone’s motherboard, so no hardware changes are needed for the second SIM to work. In India, Airtel and Reliance Jio support eSIM as of now, with other operators expected to join them in the future.

To set up the secondary SIM, you just need to follow these steps:

  1. Go to Cellular under Settings, and tap on Add Cellular Plan
  2. Your telecom operator would have provided you a QR Code. Just scan that, and all the required settings will be downloaded to your phone.
  3. Next, you might be asked to enter a confirmation code to enable the eSIM. Simply enter the number the operator has provided you

If you don’t want to scan a QR code, you can select the Enter Details Manually option at the bottom.

The new iPhones let users switch between multiple eSIM profiles with just a tap

According to an Apple Support page, you will be able to save more than one profile (number) on your eSIM. This means that you can use the services of more than two telecom operators on the same iPhone. However, only a maximum of two numbers — one of them being the physical SIM — will be active at the same time. You will be able to label your additional eSIM profiles however you like to make it easy to identify each one’s number. You can switch between which number you want as the primary or secondary at any time.

When you set a number as primary, it will be used for calls, SMS messages, mobile data, iMessage, and FaceTime. It will also be the default number when you call someone who is not in your contacts. The secondary number will be able to receive calls and texts. Of course, you can swap the two at any time. Lastly, there is an option to keep the secondary SIM just for cellular data, while everything else is routed through the primary one.

Whenever you call a contact, the iPhone will automatically place the call from the number that was used to call that same contact the last time. So if you used the secondary number to call a friend, the next call or SMS to that person will also be from the secondary number. You can always change this by going into a person’s contact card and selecting the other number to be the default, under Preferred Cellular Plan. You will also have the option to switch between phone numbers before placing a call or sending a text.

If you are on a call using either of the SIMs and get a call on the other one, you will not hear a call waiting tone or see a missed call notification, because Apple has used a dual-standby scheme which means that one SIM is not available while the other is in use on a call. You can, however, send callers directly to voicemail, if it has been set up. You can also set up call forwarding so that calls to either SIM are routed to your other one. These functions will depend on mobile operator support. In India, you should get the missed call SMS notification, if you currently get that when someone tries calling you when your phone is switched off or out of coverage area.

If you become the owner of a smartphone from the well-known Apple manufacturer, you will definitely want to try all the features of this device. We suggest starting with an option that appeared in this series of devices not long ago, but it was exactly what most users were waiting for.

The most interesting novelty in Apple smartphones is considered the embedded communication module. This is the product of some innovative developments, and now the user does not need a physical SIM card to connect to the network. The embedded SIM in an iPhone makes it possible to use several packages at the same time without changing SIM cards. It is worth noting that previously this mobile technology manufacturer did not support multiple SIMs, so owners of Apple smartphones could not take advantage of it. The situation now is dramatically different, and the appearance of the eSIM module in iPhones opens up new opportunities for users.

Which iPhones support dual SIMs?

If you decide to use eSIM on your smartphone, you need to verify that your device supports this option. At the moment, the following series support a second SIM card:

  • iPhone XS
  • iPhone XS Max
  • iPhone XR

A similar option is available in all models that came out after these series. This manufacturer favorably reacted to the innovation and decided to maintain it in all of its devices.

Advantages of the embedded communication module

To the unaware person, such a feature may seem superfluous or even strange, because for a long time, Apple smartphones worked with one SIM card only. However, the ability to connect an additional plan has many advantages. For example, you go on a vacation or business trip to another country. During the trip, it is important to stay connected and be able to go online at any time. If you use mobile data under a package from an already subscribed operator, you will have to overpay huge amounts for roaming. Connecting to local networks is not always convenient, since you have to visit a store, pay extra for connection and buy a plan that is not always favorable for you.

The second SIM in an iPhone eliminates these difficulties, since you can activate it by just following some steps and choose a package for a specific period of time. eSIM operators offer subscribers not only to choose the connection period on their own, but to fill the package with the amount of data they need.

How to connect to the eSIM operator’s network?

If you decide to activate eSIM on an iPhone, follow these simple instructions:

  • Choosing and buying a package. On the operator’s website, select a package that will suit you in all aspects. After payment you will receive a QR-code using which you will activate the package.
  • Connection. To activate, use the camera of the device for scanning the received code, and then you’ll be connected to the operator’s network automatically.
  • Setting up eSIM on an iPhone. In the device main menu, find the “Cellular” section; there you will see all connected plans and can set the parameters for using each one of them. First, you can rename each active plan so as not to get confused in the future. Another connection parameter you can take advantage of is the selection of the basic plan

In the settings, you can set the default plan for all calls, or limit the mobile data to one operator.

How to make and receive calls?

Now, we will tell you in detail how 2 SIMs work in an iPhone so that you can take full advantage of all communication options. You can receive or make calls using any of the connected plans. You do not have to constantly choose which number to call from, since the system automatically remembers the used number and associates it with a specific subscriber. For this reason, the next time a number is dialed, the plan that was previously used will be used again.

Owners of devices operating with iOS 13 or higher can receive incoming calls from the second number when talking through a different plan. However, this requires to meet several conditions. The telecom operator must support Wi-Fi calls, and the device must have network connection when the signal arrives. When dialing a number, the subscriber can independently choose a connected plan and use a specific operator in order to make the call.

Messages are sent in the same way, and the subscriber can choose the number for sending SMS or MMS. When typing, you can see a small legend at the top of the screen indicating the number from which messages will be sent. If you want to change the operator, just switch to another plan with one tap on the screen.

If you purchased an iPhone with 2 SIMs, your user capabilities would expand multiple times. You can work with different plans, choosing the package which will be most beneficial in any specific circumstance. In this case, you should take into account the fact that the second SIM is often used not only for economizing reasons. Your regular operator’s network may not work well in certain areas of the city, and it is better to connect a second package from another service provider in order not to be left without communication at crucial moments.

Learn to fix any issues you might encounter when using Dual SIM with iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, iPhone XR, or later models that feature a nano-SIM card and an eSIM.

How to set up dual sim cards on the iphone xs max and xr

Welcome to 2022. A New Year, some new speculation. The first being whispers that Apple may be preparing to move to an all e-SIM setup with iPhone 14, the second being a serendipitous support video explaining how to setup and use Dual SIM on iPhones.

What is Dual SIM?

Most current iPhones rely on a physical SIM card.

Many also support a dual-SIM setup consisting of both a physical SIM card and an eSIM, a virtual card provided by some carriers. This was first introduced with iPhone XS, XS Max and iPhone XR. The iPhone 13 is the first iPhone to support dual eSIM’s.

It seems Apple wants to remove the SIM tray altogether, which will require a move to adopt eSIM. Current speculation suggests it will introduce SIM-tray-free iPhones in September 2022.

This will also remove yet another port as the company continues a mission to make iPhones completely sealed units.

Given the iPhone 13 already supports dual eSIM’s it’s clear that users can expect to use up to two numbers with these devices, though not every carrier yet supports eSIM on iPhones.

How to set up Dual SIM on your iPhone

Apple Support has published a video explaining how to set up and use Dual SIM on those iPhones that support it.

To use the feature, you must obtain an eSIM from a carrier. Not every carrier supports this, so do review this list hosted on Apple’s website to see if your carrier will support dual SIM.

On a locked iPhone you are required to get your second eSIM from your contracted carrier, but you can use any supported eSIM on an unlocked iPhone.

1. Use a QR code:

Some carriers provide printed QR codes. Open Settings>Cellular, tap Add Cellular Plan and scan your QR code with your iPhone to activate your eSIM.

2. Use a carrier app:

Some carriers offer eSIM set up via their own app – download their most recent app from the App Store and see if it is available there. You may be provided with a Notification link to use during setup.

Install Cellular Plan

Label your phone lines as business, personal, or travel, and create a custom name. You may use one line for travel and another for personal, for example. Tap finish and then choose a Default Line, which will be used to make calls and send messages.

The setup process will also ask you to select which line to use with iMessage and FaceTime. You must also choose which line to use for data and which one to use for calls. Enable Cellular Data switching at the bottom of this dialog for more flexibility,

Each line you create on your device can be defined as follows:

  • Use Primary as default
  • Use Secondary as default
  • Use Secondary for cellular data only.

How to set up dual sim cards on the iphone xs max and xr

Define your default and secondary lines

How to use dual-SIM

One of the first things you’ll see once you’ve enabled a second line is a subtle change in the top right corner of your Home screen.

How to set up dual sim cards on the iphone xs max and xr

The mobile signal bar indicator now appears a little different.

Look closely and you’ll see it has been divided into two, with the top set of indicators showing the signal strength of your Primary line while the bottom set shows the strength of your secondary line.

Another thing you may want to do is assign preferred lines to people in your contacts book. That way you’ll always use your business line to contact business contacts, giving your personal line a little additional privacy.

By default, the system will always call a contact using the last line you used, but you can also tap the option next to default at the top of the contact record to choose the line you wish to use when you contact them.

When placing a call you can change the line you are using by tapping the grey bar at the top of the device in the dialling display to choose the appropriate one. Please explore my growing collection of hints and tips for your Apple products.

How to set up dual sim cards on the iphone xs max and xr

One of the most anticipated new features on the iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and iPhone XR is the introduction of Dual SIM technology. With this tool, you can have use two cellular connections on the same handset. In this article, you’ll learn more about the feature and how you can set it up on your iOS device.

What is Dual SIM?

The iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and iPhone XR, like other iPhones, are equipped with a nano-SIM. Unlike other iPhones, the handsets are also equipped with an all-new digital eSIM. Both allow you to activate a cellular plan with a carrier. In this case, one requires a physical card, while the other involves software only.

With Dual SIM, both of your phone numbers can make and receive voice calls and send and receive SMS and MMS. In doing so, your iPhone can use one cellular data network at a time.

Dual SIM is ideally suited for folks who:

  • Need one number for business and another for personal calls.
  • Want to add a local plan for travel outside of the country or region.
  • Wish to have separate voice and data plans.

Availability

Technically, Dual SIM can work wherever the iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and iPhone XR are sold. However, carriers must decide whether to support Dual SIM before you can use their services on your iPhone. Also, Dual SIM is only available on unlocked iPhones. Otherwise, both plans must be from the same carrier. If a CDMA carrier provides your first SIM, your second SIM won’t support CDMA.

Apple provides a running list of carriers who support the feature online for your reference.

Note: In mainland China, eSIM is not being supported. However, there are some workarounds.

Note #2: Dual SIM requires an iOS 12 software update that’s coming later in 2018.

Setting up your carrier account via eSIM

To add a carrier account via an eSIM, you can either scan a QR code or use a carrier app to get started. You can also add your information manually.

How to set up dual sim cards on the iphone xs max and xr

QR code

To activate a code provided by your carrier:

1) Go to Settings > Cellular on your iPhone.

2) Tap Add Cellular Plan.

3) Scan the code.

Carrier app

To activate your eSIM account using an app:

1) Download the carrier app from the App Store.

2) Use the app to purchase a plan.

Manually

You can also add your plan information manually.

To activate a code provided by your carrier:

1) Go to Settings > Cellular on your iPhone.

2) Tap Add Cellular Plan.

3) Tap Enter Details Manually at the bottom of the screen and following the directions.

You’ll need to add the SM-DP+ address, activation code, and confirmation code provided by your carrier.

Once your second plan for Dual SIM is added, you’ll be asked to label it. For example, you can mark one plan Business and another Personal. You can also change the label later by going to Settings > Cellular and tapping the number whose label you want to change.

Note: You can have more than one eSIM on your iPhone, but you can only use one at a time. To switch, tap Settings > Cellular > Cellular Plans and select the plan you want to use. Then tap Turn On This Line.

Customizing your Dual SIM setup

Before using Dual SIM, you’ll have to decide how both plans will work together. You’ll do this through a Default Line screen where you must choose a number to be your default. You can also select which number is to be used only for cellular data. Your other number will be your default.

The three options are:

Use Primary as your default line: If you select this option, Primary will be used by default for voice, SMS, Data, iMessage, and FaceTime. The secondary will be available just for voice and SMS.

Use Secondary as your default line: If you select this option, Secondary will be used for voice, SMS, Data, iMessage, and FaceTime. Primary will be available just for voice and SMS.

Use Secondary for cellular data only: You might want to select this option if you’re traveling internationally and you want to keep Primary for voice, SMS, iMessage, and FaceTime. This will allow you to use Secondary for data.

Using both numbers together

Now that you’ve set up both numbers, here’s how to use them with regards to calls, messages, and data.

Calls

As Apple explains, “When you’re on a call, an incoming call on your other phone number will go to voicemail if you have voicemail set up with your carrier. However, you won’t get a missed call notification from your secondary number. Call Waiting works for incoming calls on the same phone number. To avoid missing an important call, you can turn on call forwarding and forward all calls from one number to the other. Check with your carrier for availability and to find out if additional fees apply.”

When making a call, your iPhone remembers which number you used the last time to communicate with a contact. If you haven’t called someone before, it uses your default number. You can assign a preferred number in the Contacts app.

1) In the app, tap the contact.

2) Tap Preferred Cellular Plan.

3) Select the number you want to use with the contact.

Send messages with iMessage and SMS/MMS

You can send messages with iMessage and use FaceTime on one phone line. To change which line uses iMessage:

1) Go to Settings > Messages.

2) Tap iMessage & FaceTime Line.

3) Select the phone number you want to use.

To switch phone numbers before you send an SMS/MMS message:

1) Open Messages.

2) Tap the New button.

3) Enter the name of your contact.

4) Tap the current phone number.

5) Tap the number you’d like to use.

Apple iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max with dual-SIM: How the dual-SIM option work, what is eSIM and other questions answered.

Apple iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max ship with dual-SIM support, the first on any iPhone ever. The functionality will be rolled out via an iOS 12 update later this year. It is worth noting that China, Hong Kong, and Macau are the only markets that will get support for two physical SIM slots, while Apple will offer a secondary eSIM option to the rest of the world, including India. This means that the second SIM slot will be carrier locked, and users will not need to put in a physical SIM card to activate connection. So, what does this mean for iPhone XS Max and iPhone XS users in India? Here are the details:

Apple iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max with dual-SIM support: What is eSIM?

eSIM of a carrier is digitally stored in one’s device. So, users do not need to put in a physical SIM card to access cellular network. Also, cellular plans can be remotely activated on eSIM.

The eSIM option is said to be more efficient when compared to the traditional physical SIM card option. Apple iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max users can store and switch between two SIM connections in their phone, but can use only one at a time as Apple is using a dual standby option.

Apple iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max with dual-SIM support: What this means for India users

Both the higher-end iPhone models of 2018 will support dual-SIM functionality, where the second will be an eSIM option. The iPhone XR also will have the option when it is launched later. Do note that both the numbers can be used to make and receive calls as well as send and receive SMS and MMS. Of course, the phone can use only one cellular data plan at a time.

In India, carrier options that offer eSIM connection are limited. Currently, only Airtel and Reliance Jio connection can be used to activate eSIM, though more telecom operator like Vodafone are expected to offer this feature soon. This essentially means that users in India can put physical SIM card (nano SIM) of any operator of their choice in the first slot, but the second slot can only have Jio or Airtel connection.

Apple iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max with dual-SIM support: How to activate eSIM

To use two different carriers on iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max; users need to keep in mind that their phone must be unlocked. Or else, both the plans must be from the same carrier.

People will need to use their iPhone to scan the QR code that their carrier provided or enter the confirmation code given by the carrier to activate or set up cellular plan with eSIM. Go to Settings and then click on Cellular. Next, tap Add Cellular Plan.

Apple iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max with dual-SIM support: How to switch between SIM cards

After both the SIM slots are activated, users can set their default number to call or send a message to someone who is not in their Contacts app. This number will also be used by iMessage and FaceTime. In fact, users also have the option to choose a default number exclusively for cellular data.

Apple iPhone XS, iPhone XS max users can either choose their primary number as default for voice, SMS, data, iMessage, and FaceTime. In this case, the secondary will only be available for voice and SMS. In case, users should choose their secondary number as default, the primary will then be restricted for voice and SMS. There is a third option as well to use the secondary option for cellular data only.

Apple iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max with dual-SIM support: How to make calls, etc

When both the SIM slots are activated on Apple iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, the phone will by default choose the same number that the person used to call a contact the last time. It chooses the default number to make a call in case the user has not called the contact ever before. There is an option to specify number to call a contact as well.

Either of the two numbers can be used to make or receive calls. As per an official Apple support page, users will not get a missed-call notification if they are on a call and they get an incoming call from the second number at the same time. Instead, the incoming call will go to their voicemail if they have set up one with their carrier; or users can set up call forwarding on their other number to avoid missing important calls.

How to set up dual sim cards on the iphone xs max and xr

If you have an iPhone XR, XS, iPhone XS Max, or later, you have eSIM settings that come with it. This means there’s only a single physical SIM card slot, and the second SIM is an eSIM (embedded SIM).

Having an eSIM on iPhone 12 is even better because the lineup brings 5G to the mix. With a few caveats to the dual SIM functionality, you can set up and use eSIM on iPhone 12 with 5G speeds (if 5G is available in your area).

What Is An eSIM?

The basic idea behind an eSIM on iPhone is that the SIM is embedded into the phone, which takes up lesser space, and is easier to migrate to another carrier. Another advantage is that you can store more than one eSIM on your iPhone. So if you have three separate numbers, you can practically make it a triple SIM iPhone. However, no physical SIM card also means you can’t just swap SIM cards on the fly. If you brick your phone and need to change it, there’s a chance your replacement phone won’t support eSIM.

Supporting Carriers For eSIM

How to set up dual sim cards on the iphone xs max and xr

The first thing you need to do is check if your carrier provides eSIM services. While the service is readily available for almost all major carriers in the U.K. and the U.S., it’s still not at full capacity in India. You can apply for an eSIM in India if you’re using an Airtel, Vi, or Reliance Jio number. However, getting an eSIM is the easiest if you have an Airtel number.

For Vodafone Idea (Vi) users, the service is available for postpaid customers from select states only. You can check if you’re eligible for a Vi eSIM from here. If you’re a Reliance Jio user, you’ll have to go to a nearby Jio Store or Reliance Digital with ID proof and a photograph to get an eSIM. If you have any other carrier, you’re less likely to get the service.

How To Set up eSIM On iPhone?

This method is only valid if you have an iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, iPhone XR, or later. If you’re using setting up an eSIM on iPhone 12 series, you can also use it to browse 5G if it is available in your region. Note that the the basic steps for setting up an eSIM on iPhone remain the same for all carriers. You’ll need a secondary phone with a physical SIM card and a valid email address to complete the setup.

Before you Proceed: Your eSIM will be activated within 2 hours of completing the process. Also, SMS services will be blocked for 24 hours after you’ve changed to eSIM.

How to set up dual sim cards on the iphone xs max and xr

  • Send an SMS saying “eSIM ” to your carrier’s customer care number.
  • If it’s a registered email ID, you’ll receive an SMS that would ask you to confirm if you want to proceed.
  • After you’ve consented over SMS, you’ll receive a phone call for final confirmation.

Once this is done, you’ll receive a QR code on your registered email ID.

Now it’s time to get the eSIM on iPhone. Go to iPhone Settings > Mobile Data > Add Data Plan and scan the QR code you received. Once the plan is added, you can follow the instructions on your phone’s screen to label your SIM card, and you’re good to go.

You’ll see two mobile networks in the control center now. You can choose which number to use for calls and SMS. There’s also an option to enable mobile data switching, which lets your iPhone use mobile data from both lines, depending on coverage and availability.

5G Dual SIM on iPhone 12

iPhone 12 series owners will have to disable Dual SIM in order to use 5G. To do this, go to your iPhone’s Settings > Mobile Data/Cellular and choose the line you want to turn off. Once you disable a phone line, you can use 5G on the one that’s still on.

Packed with lots of great features, the iPhone XS is brilliant for business. Especially on EE. Why? Well, on top of being voted the UK’s Best Business Network at the 2018 Mobile Industry Awards, we’re the first UK network to offer Dual SIM functionality.

So what does that mean for you? For the very first time, you can take and make calls with your business phone number and your personal phone number on a single iPhone. That means you don’t have to carry two phones with you wherever you go. Or remember to keep them both charged.

How it works – iPhone XS SIM card size

iPhone XS uses a nano SIM which slots in the retractable SIM tray. So when you buy an iPhone XS from EE Business, we give you a nano SIM to access our network. Then you can decide whether to transfer your old number to EE, or keep the number that comes with the SIM.

Then you can access your apps, make calls and send emails without relying on wi-fi, or incurring roaming charges. But please be aware, you can only do this on devices that aren’t locked to any networks.

To make the most of the dual-SIM capability of the iPhone XS, you need to be on EE, Britain’s Best Network for business. To find out more, visit our iPhone XS page today.

When iOS 12.1 released at the end of October, it brought Dual SIM support for iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max and iPhone XR users. This new feature allows two SIMs at the same time: one physical card and one digital, via eSIM.

With Dual SIM, you can use two cellular plans at the same time on one device. If you’re travelling, that means you can easily pop in a physical SIM card locally to get the best plan, while retaining your home plan on eSIM (or vice versa).

In Canada, only Bell and Virgin Mobile support eSIM on iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max and iPhone XR. There’s no word when Telus or Rogers will add support.

If you’re looking to setup eSIM on your new iPhone with Bell or Virgin Mobile, the wireless carriers have setup a couple web pages with instructions on how to do so. Essentially, setting up eSIM on your iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max or iPhone XR is quite simple.

You can also manually enter in details as well:

1. Select Enter Details Manually

2. In the SM-DP+ Address field, copy and paste or type in : CUST-011-V4-PROD-ATL2.GDSB.NET

3. Leave the Activation Code field blank.

If you haven’t noticed, instructions are the same for both Bell and Virgin Mobile, down to the SM-DP+ address. If you’re having trouble setting this up, you may need to ensure your SIM card is associated with your iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max or iPhone XR, which requires contacting Bell or visiting a store.

According to Bell and Virgin Mobile, your first line can be any rate plan, while the second line can be activated with a BYOD rate plan. Either line can have voice or voice and data.

Steps to enable dual SIM on iPhone XS, XS Max and XR

Step One

To begin with, update your phone to iOS 12.1

Step Two

Send an SMS to 121 – Type “eSIM” “registered email id” (in case you don’t have registered email, then get in touch with customer care to register it first).

Step Three

After the SMS, you’ll receive an email from Airtel that will have a QR code

Step Four

Scan this QR code using your iPhone by going to Settings > Cellular > Add Cellular Plan. (Alternatively, you can also manually install these values.)

After this, iPhone users will receive a confirmation SMS from Airtel and they will be required to reply with the consent for activating eSIM.

What is an eSIM?

How to set up dual sim cards on the iphone xs max and xr

The term “eSIM” simply means embedded SIM card. There are no physical SIM cards involved and no physical swapping over required by you. An eSIM is basically a small chip inside your phone and works in a similar way to the NFC chip inside your phone.

The information on an eSIM is rewritable, meaning you can decide to change operator with a simple phone call. They’re really easy to add to a data plan – connecting devices with eSIMs to a mobile account can be done in minutes. For instance, if you regularly travel to another country, you could keep your US SIM in your phone-while also stuffing in a cheap local SIM card at your destination, too. It also means you could have your personal phone number and work phone number on the same device.

Dual SIM phones will tell you which number is being called too, so you can still ignore business calls on the weekend. Note that there is also a physical SIM slot in the XS and XS Max – the eSIM inside these handsets is used for the second SIM support.

What Does Dual SIM Card Mean?

How to set up dual sim cards on the iphone xs max and xr

Dual SIM card: Editions in the US and elsewhere that support eSIM tech will include one physical SIM and one eSIM. Both are enabled on the iPhone at the same time, correspond to separate phone numbers, and can be set up with two completely different plans.

The eSIM means you won’t have to swap out a physical SIM card if you want to switch carriers or plans. An eSIM will make it easier to take advantage of the dual-SIM capabilities and swap out a second number if you change jobs or carriers.

But for China, where the embedded SIM hasn’t caught on yet, Apple is releasing a distinct XS version with slots for two physical SIM cards. That’s how important the Chinese market is to the company, but this model could filter out to other areas around the world that haven’t adopted eSIM.

What’s the Benefit of Dual SIM Card?

How to set up dual sim cards on the iphone xs max and xr

There are many reasons users would want dual SIM capability. You could use one number for business and another number for personal calls or have a data roaming SIM for use in another country.

You could even have totally separate voice and data plans like reserving one line for business and another for personal use on the same phone or using prepaid cards. It can also come in handy when traveling to load up SIMs from regional carriers.

Can You Share the Benefits of the Dual SIM Card?

Apple’s new iPhones use eSIM technology. And it needs to be supported by the network or carrier. So for your new iPhone XS or XS Max, you’ll need to choose an eSIM-compatible network for the second SIM support.

However, there are only ten countries in the world support it. They are Austria, Canada, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, India, Spain, the UK, and the US.

The technology isn’t offered by all carriers. Apple showed a list of carriers including big names like Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile that will eventually support dual SIM, while the XS will support it after a free update of iOS 12 sometime in the fall.

How Does eSIM Work on iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max?

Dual SIM support will be available via a free software update later this fall. Use of Dual SIM requires two wireless service plans (which may include restrictions on roaming). Certain restrictions apply to use.

Your primary SIM card will slot into the phone like normal. But you can also bag a second phone number using a virtual “eSIM”. New options will appear in your iPhone that let you subscribe to a secondary eSIM plan.

If You Have a QR Code:

  1. Go to Settings > Cellular.
  2. Tap Add Cellular Plan.

Ever want to have your work and personal phone number on one iPhone? Now it’s possible.

Jason Cipriani has been covering technology news and reviewing the latest gadgets as a freelance journalist for the past 13 years.

When Apple announced the iPhone XS, XS Max, and XR, the company announced that — for the first time — it would be possible to use two phone numbers on the same phone using eSIM technology.

What is an eSIM?

An eSIM takes the place of the small plastic SIM card your phone uses now. The advantage of an eSIM is that it’s embedded into the phone, and can be programmed — and reprogrammed — to work with various carriers.

Eventually, it makes sense for phone makers and carriers to adopt eSIM technology instead of having to manage the plastic SIM cards that have been a staple of cellular technology.

Which iPhones support eSIM?

Currently, only the iPhone XS, XS Max and XR support dual-sim service using an eSIM. iOS 12.1 is required.

In China, Hong Kong, and Macau, Apple released an iPhone XR and an iPhone XS Max with dual-sim card slots. So, instead of a single SIM card slot, and an eSIM, the two devices have space for two physical SIM cards.

Why add a second number?

Adding a second phone number to your iPhone can be useful when traveling overseas, where data roaming fees are too expensive. You can purchase a data plan for a local carrier, add it to your iPhone, but keep access to your standard phone number for calls and texts.

Another use case is to have a personal phone number and a work number tied to the same device.

Or, depending on the cost of adding another line, a second line could be used to help manage potential dates or Craigslist transactions.

What about carriers?

Right now, at least for those in the US, carrier support is the last hurdle. With the release of iOS 12.1 to all iPhones worldwide, your phone is ready and able to work with an eSIM number. However, Verizon Wireless, AT&T, and T-Mobile aren’t quite ready to support the feature.

Here’s the current list of carriers that either offer support right now, or for the listings with an asterisk, will have support later this year:

Things to keep in mind

There are some details you’ll need to navigate in order to use the eSIM feature:

  • You need an unlocked iPhone to use two different carriers.
  • If your main SIM is for a CDMA carrier (Verizon or Sprint), the second line can’t be a CDMA line.
  • Only one line can be activated with iMessage and FaceTime. The other line will still send and receive regular text and photo messages.

Setup

When you’re ready to add a second line to your iPhone, you’ll need to either visit a wireless carrier’s store or download and install the carrier’s app. If you’re traveling, it’s probably easier just to visit the store and talk to a human instead of trying to navigate through an app that may very well be in a different language.

The wireless carrier will give you a card that has a QR Code on it. You’ll need to go to Settings > Cellular > Add Cellular Plan to scan the code, then follow the rest of the prompts to complete setup.

Another method is to set up the eSIM using a carrier’s app, which walks you through the process. Right now, Truphone’s app works with the new eSIM feature and lets you add a secondary data plan to your phone.

How does Dual SIM work on my iPhone?

With iOS 13, both of your lines can make and receive voice and FaceTime calls. Also, both lines can send and receive messages using iMessage, SMS and MMS. Your iPhone can use one cellular data network at a time.

Each line on your iPhone will have a default name of either “Primary” or “Secondary” to distinguish between numbers. In the cellular settings of your iPhone, you can also customize your own name for each line. For example, you can name your lines “Work” and “Personal.

How to make and receive Calls

  • For outgoing calls, you can choose between the Primary and Secondary number. While you’re on a call, Primary or Secondary label will display on your device.
  • For incoming calls, the first letter of each label (“P” or “S”) will display on your iPhone so you can identify each line.

How to send and receive messages

  • For outgoing messages, you can choose between the Primary and Secondary number.
  • For incoming messages, it is a single inbox and there’s no “P” or “S’ label

Are both iPhone lines connected to the network at all times?

Both lines are connected to the network at all times and you can make and receive calls from either phone number on your iPhone. With iOS 13, when you’re on a call on one number (and if your other numbers support Wi-Fi calling), you can answer incoming calls on your other number. You’ll need to turn on “Allow Cellular Data Switching” when you are on a call that isn’t your default data line. If you ignore the call and you have voicemail set up, you’ll get a missed call notification and the call will go to voicemail.

What is Dual SIM Dual Standby’ (DSDS)?

Dual SIM allows you to have two or more phone numbers on a single device to make and receive voice calls, and to send and receive SMS and MMS.

Dual SIM Dual Standby (DSDS) technology allows all lines to be connected to the network at all times and if one number is on a call, incoming calls on the other numbers will go to your voicemail.

On iPhone XR, XS and iPhone XS Max, ‘Dual SIM Dual Standby’ is a combination of a physical SIM card and an eSIM.

What rate plan options are available for my two lines?

You can activate either line on any in-market rate plan.

If I have data on both lines for my iPhone, which data bucket will I use and be billed for?

  • Both lines can support data services; however, you can only access one line’s data bucket at a time. You can set and change the default data bucket through your iPhone’s “Cellular Settings”.
  • Your data usage will come out of the data feature you have defaulted to in your iPhone’s “Cellular Settings”.
  • For example, during work hours, you can use the data from your “Work” line, and after work, you can switch to your “Personal” line. For more details, please visit Apple support.
  • You’ll continue to receive data usage notifications from Fido when using a Fido line.

What happens when I roam?

Just as you can choose which line to call, message or use data from while in Canada, you can do the same while you roam. Roaming charges will apply to both lines individually based on usage. You can use Fido Roam on one or both lines and will be charged separately for each line.

Please note:roaming notifications from Fido for both lines are received in the same message thread. It’s important to pay attention to the line indicator (Line 1 or Line 2) in the thread so you can tell which line you are using for roaming, especially if you have different roaming features on each line.

Will E9-1-1 and T9-1-1 work on both lines?

Both lines have the capability to dial 9-1-1. Where E9-1-1 is available, the caller’s number and approximate location will be provided, regardless of the line used.

For T9-1-1, you must register each line separately.
