The first set of steps below show you how to mute a Messages conversation in iOS. The second set of steps show you how to unmute a conversation.

You can use the phone number of your iPhone with Messages and FaceTime on your Mac, iPad, or iPod touch.

Set up your phone number

  1. Go to Settings > Messages and make sure that iMessage is on. You might need to wait a moment for it to activate.

  3. In the "You can receive iMessages" section, make sure that your phone number and Apple ID are selected.
  4. Go to Settings > FaceTime and make sure that your phone number and Apple ID are selected in the "You can be reached by FaceTime at" section.

If you don’t want calls or messages for your iPhone on your iPad, iPod touch, or Mac, you can remove your phone number. There are two ways to do this:

  • On your iPhone, go to Settings > Messages > Send & Receive. Select your Apple ID at the bottom of the screen and tap Sign Out. Then go to Settings > FaceTime, select your Apple ID and tap Sign Out.
  • If the phone number that you want to remove belongs to an iPhone that you can’t access, change your Apple ID password. This removes all phone numbers from your iPad, iPod touch, and Mac. Calls or messages for the removed numbers won’t appear on those devices anymore.

Turn your phone number on or off for your Mac

After you set up your phone number, you can turn it on or off for Messages and FaceTime on your Mac.

  1. Open Messages or FaceTime. If asked, sign in with the Apple ID that you’re using with Messages and FaceTime on your iPhone.
  2. For Messages, choose Messages > Preferences, then click iMessage. For FaceTime, choose FaceTime > Preferences, then click Settings.
  3. Turn your phone number on or off:
    • To turn on your phone number, select it and your Apple ID in the list. If you don’t see your phone number, get help with your settings or contact Apple Support. If you see a number that isn’t yours, change your Apple ID password.
    • To turn off your phone number, deselect it in the list.
  4. If you want recipients to see your phone number and not your Apple ID, select your phone number from the “Start new conversations from” or ”Start new calls from” pop-up menu.

Is one of your iMessage friends annoying you by sending constant text messages? Maybe you’ve got someone spamming you with message nonsense? Don’t worry, you can easily mute them and prevent all notifications every time they send a text or iMessage to your iPhone.

Although you can always block a contact, that may be a bit extreme since it cuts off all inbound communication from that person, especially if you’re just looking for a temporary reprieve and don’t want to completely end communication with someone. Fortunately you have another option, and that is to hide alerts from them, which also will silence any notification sounds from that persons messages too. You can even mute your “favorites” if you just temporarily need a break from distractions or communications.

So, do you want to prevent notifications from certain conversations in the Messages app on your iPhone or iPad? Then read on!

How to Mute iMessages on iPhone

You can take advantage of this procedure to not just mute iMessage conversations, but regular SMS threads as well. Simply follow the steps below to get started.

Open the stock Messages app on your iPhone.

There you go, that’s how easy it is to mute and unmute iMessage conversations on your iPhone.

Although we were focusing solely on the iPhone, you could follow the same steps to hide and unhide alerts for iMessages on your iPad too.

After you mute someone, they won’t be informed regarding the mute once they send you a text again, so the muted contact has no idea they’ve been silenced on your end.

In older versions of iOS, this “Hide Alerts” is referred to as “Do Not Disturb”. So, regardless of what device you’re using, you can find this setting by heading over to the “Details” section within a conversation. Likewise, you can mute group conversations on your iPhone and iPad as well using this feature.

If you’re receiving unwanted messages from random people, you can filter unknown senders for iMessages. This turns off notifications from people who’re not in your contacts and sort them into a separate list.

Do you use a Mac? If you send and receive iMessages on your Apple computer, you might be interested in learning how you can mute conversations from your Mac too. The procedure is fairly similar and straightforward.

Hopefully you were successful in muting iMessages and SMS text messages from anyone you found to be annoying or disruptive in your contacts list. If that’s not far enough, you can always block them completely too.

Do you have any thoughts on this feature? If so, share them in the comments section down below.

With my watch, the only notification I get of text messages is a taptic. And the iPhone is silent. If this is the way they planned it, it’s a dumb idea. I don’t always feel a tap, and the phone doesn’t say a peep. Does anyone else still get the iPhone notification sound with an Apple Watch on your arm?

I called Apple Support, and he said this was intentional, even though the other notifications (phone and Mail) don’t silence the iPhone when the setting is “mirror”.

You can have an audible beep on the Watch along with the touch.

I’ve fiddled with custom settings, but what I REALLY want is for my iPhone to make the sounds it used to. Is it true that the Watch silences any sound notification for text messages from the phone? As I say, it does not silence them for phone calls or email.

Jun 13, 2015 6:32 PM

If the iPhone is locked then text messages and emails should be routed to the Watch and not be heard or seen on the iPhone. This is intentional. Phone calls will ring on both since they are considered something that needs immediate attention and you may not want to take it on the speakerphone on the Watch so all can hear. The whole idea of having them mirrored to the Watch is to not have to get out your iPhone or have it ring in two places. I can hear it when a text or email comes in on my Watch I don’t want to irritate people by having it make noise on both devices.

Some people have had a bug where it does what you are asking for and they have posted here wanting to know how to stop that from happening (Resetting both devices usually fixes it). I don’t really see how you can miss hearing your Watch but hear the iPhone in your pocket but if you would like Apple to add the option (I say option because I prefer the current setup and would want to be able to turn it off) go here: https://www.apple.com/feedback/watch.html

Jun 13, 2015 6:40 PM

Thanks for your reply. I suppose you have answered my question . it’s supposed to work the way it does. Even though it’s inconsistent, in that all three functions have the same selection (mirror my phone), and email still beeps on the phone, but messages do not really “mirror” the phone . they mute the phone and make a tiny sound that’s easy to miss if you’re active. Also, it doesn’t have the unique “ring” for caller identification that the phone has.

I would be happy if they simply made the watch do what the settings imply it will do, which is to mirror (duplicate) the phone if you make that choice, or perform any of the watch functions you select instead, if you choose “Custom”. The phone still has mute and volume. I just don’t see why the Watch has to take over the phone for text messages.

Perhaps I am ranting. Perhaps I will give Apple some feedback.

I believe the watch notification method is flawed. I would prefer to hear the phone and it’s louder alerts on those occasions that I need them. But the watch silences them. The watch ping is subtle and not always audible. But the really weird thing is that, when my phone is open and I’m responding to one text message, the phone plays the loud alert sound if another conversation comes in! I don’t think the phone played the notification for other conversations before I had the watch. It just played the swoosh sound. So I get no phone alert if the phone is off, but I do get an alert if I’m open in another conversation.

I’d be happy if they left the phone sounds alone and let me choose my settings as before. In the watch app, choosing “mirror” should mirror, not “replace”. And if I want the phone to shut up, let me choose which “Custom” setting I want in the watch. This would be consistent and would let everyone choose what they wanted. Apple has a tendency to force us into the choices they think are best.

On the one hand, an iPad is an impressive device when it comes to audio. These compact tablets have powerful speakers that deliver crisp highs and decent bass, and can fill a space with sound. On the other hand, all that noise can get annoying in a hurry.

You can customize your iPad’s audio settings to turn off noises like keyboard clicks and the lock sound, but you’ll still hear noises every time you get a message or when certain apps update. You can turn down the volume on music, videos, games, and other media to keep them quiet. And you can go into Do Not Disturb mode to block the sounds from texts or FaceTime contact.

But in order to fully silence all iPad sounds, you need to use the mute function found in the Control Panel, or the switch on the side.

Check out the products mentioned in this article:

How to silence an iPad completely using the Control Panel

1. For older iPads, swipe up from the bottom of the home screen. For newer iPads, swipe down and to the left from the top-right corner.

2. In the Control Panel that appears, tap the icon of a bell.

Your iPad is now muted and will make no sound, no matter how high or low the volume is set, until you unmute it by tapping the bell icon again.

How to silence certain iPad models with a switch

Older iPad models have a small switch on the side that you can use to mute your iPad. It only has two positions, so just slide it to the mute position (the metal underneath the button will be orange when it’s in mute position).

In some cases, the switch may instead lock your iPad’s orientation, meaning that you can’t change between portrait and landscape mode. If this is the case, you can change that setting by doing the following:

Disable quiet mode on your iOS device to deliver notifications prominently.

iOS 12 and iOS 13 makes it a lot easier to manage notifications on the iPhone and iPad. You can either turn off all notifications or enable quiet notifications for specific apps. With “Deliver Quietly” feature one can receive notifications in silent mode to avoid interruptions while using the device. This also avoids the need to put the iPhone in Do Not Disturb mode just to silence notifications.

That said, new iOS users may find it little tricky to turn off deliver quietly on iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch. You might need to unsilence notifications on iOS when you don’t want to miss important messages from an app. Before doing that, find what all apps are set to deliver notifications quietly.

To do so, go to Settings > Notifications. All the apps installed on your iOS device will be listed here. Scroll down and look for the “Deliver Quietly” message displayed next to a certain app.

  1. Touch and hold the top of the watch face to open the Notification Center. Then swipe down.

What is Deliver Quietly on iPhone?

Deliver Quietly, introduced in iOS 12 is an efficient and quick way to silence alerts and notifications for certain apps. It comes handy when you want to get rid of frequent notifications from busy apps like Facebook or WhatsApp. This way you can avoid distraction and stop unwanted apps from barging your work routine. Note that apps set to deliver quietly will still continue to get all the notifications.

What happens when you turn on deliver quietly for an app?

The new notifications from a certain app will be delivered quietly and will only appear in the Notification Center. You won’t see the quiet notifications in the lock screen. Moreover, the silenced alerts won’t play sounds, vibration, display a banner or badge icon.

How to turn off group notifications on iPhone

As you might have noticed, iOS 12 and later groups multiple notifications from the same app together to keep the Notification Centre less cluttered. You can, however, still choose to view individual notifications from your favourite apps. This can be done by turning off group notifications for specific apps. To do so,

  1. Navigate to Settings > Notifications.
  2. Tap the app for which you want to ungroup notifications. The default setting is Automatic that shows notifications from each app in groups.
  3. Tap Notification Grouping and select the Off option.

The only downside is that you cannot disable group notifications for all apps at once. You have to change the respective setting for each app individually.
