Facebook adverts and auto-playing videos can be a real pain, especially if they eat up your mobile data allowance or blast sound from your phone or computer when you least expect it. From here, you can tap the Videos and Photos setting. In here you’ll find a Auto-play setting. All you need to do is tap this and choose your preferred settings. Tap ‘On WiFi Connections Only’ if you want to simply save your mobile data allowance, or ‘Never Auto-play Videos’ if you want to prevent them from playing entirely. With this option, the Facebook app will only play a video when you tap on it.

Facebook has decided that Facebook users would enjoy having auto-play videos automatically play sound as they scroll through their feed. Of course not everyone likes to be auto-blasted with audio and sound from auto-play videos, so some Facebook users may wish to stop auto-playing sound with videos shown in their feed.

Fortunately, in the mystery maze of Facebook options and account settings, you can disable the auto-play video sound option and have the videos muted unless you choose to play the audio yourself. Here is where to find this option and turn off this feature:

That’s all there is to it. Now when you browse to a page that has autoplaying media, it shouldn’t play and catch you off guard.

Not many people are fans of videos that autoplay on a page they are visiting. It can startle you or make an interruption in your work or work of others if you are in an office with many people. It can also lead to pages loading slower if you are on a network with limited or poor connectivity. Disabling the autoplay of videos can help your web browsing experience in several different ways.

If you don’t have it yet, read our article on how to install the new Edge. If you are familiar with Google Chrome, you should have no problem diving into the browser. Check out our other articles on the browser like how to add Chrome extensions or how to block crapware with Edge.

The new Microsoft Edge is built on top of Chromium. It is truly cross-platform and available for Windows 7, 8, 10, macOS, Android, and iOS with a Linux version in the works.

I’ve heard about Facebook introducing autoplay videos last year, but I’am only now starting to see them in my news feed. While they initially play without sound unless you click the volume icon, it’s still a major annoyance to see things moving around in my news feed. I’d like to put a stop to this if at all possible.

Yes, you can. Go to https://www.facebook.com/settings?tab=videos .

The page should say Video settings, and an option on the right to disable auto-playing. I just tried it and videos do not start automatically anymore while scrolling.

You can turn Facebook’s video auto-play settings on or off. To stop videos from playing automatically on your computer:

  1. From the top right of Facebook, click and select Settings
  2. Click Videos in the left menu
  3. Click the dropdown menu next to Auto-play Videos and select Off

You can adjust the Facebook app’s auto-play settings to On, Wi-Fi only or Off.

To adjust the auto-play settings on your Android phone or tablet:

  1. Open the Facebook app
  2. Tap
  3. Scroll down and tap App Settings
  4. Tap Video Auto-play
  5. Choose an option

Note: If you don’t see the Video Auto-play settings on your Android phone, log out of the Facebook app. When you log back into Facebook, Video Auto-play should be visible in App Settings.

To adjust the auto-play settings on your iPhone or iPad:

  1. Open the Facebook app
  2. Tap
  3. Scroll down and tap Settings
  4. Tap Videos >Autoplay
  5. Choose an option

Note: If you don’t see Videos in your iPhone or iPad’s Facebook app settings, try updating the Facebook app.

After about six months of testing, Facebook has decided to start rolling out a new feature on mobile that automatically plays sound for videos in your News Feed, thanks to “positive feedback” from test users. As far as I’m concerned, they have been testing with the wrong users, because auto-playing sound is by far worse than auto-playing videos ever could be.

Previously, you had to tap the video in your feed to turn sound on because it was muted by default. And it should be muted by default. While Facebook has given auto-playing sound a smooth transition, fading in and out as you scroll through videos in your feed, it’s not enough to keep crying babies, barking dogs, or unwanted songs from annoying the hell out of you.

There are some options to get your Facebooking back to normal, though. The first, and most obvious option, is to just keep your Android or iOS smartphone on silent, or keep your media volume all of the way down. Then you could tap on the video to hear sound and toggle silent off and/or adjust volume as needed. To get things back exactly how they were, though, you’ll have to go into the settings.

How to Toggle Off Autoplay Sound When Scrolling on iOS

Open up the Facebook app on your iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch and head to its settings. Hit the menu tab (the three-lined icon) in the bottom right, then scroll down to “Settings.” Tap on that, then select “Account Settings” on the popup.

From here, head to the “Videos and Photos” section, then toggle off “Videos in News Feed Start With Sound.” And that’s it. From now, Facebook will be just like it used to be. keeping videos in your feed on mute until you decide to play it.

The instructions for Android are just slightly different than on iOS. Hit the menu tab (the three-lined icon) in the top right, then scroll down to “App Settings” and tap on it. (If you don’t see this option, instead, select “Settings,” then “App Settings” on the popup.) On the next screen, tap on “Videos in News Feed Start With Sound” to toggle it off.
