It did not help.

I unistalled, reinstalled.
The settings had been reset so I selected “No” in the autostart dropdown.
Before reboot I could see it was set as Disabled in the Task Manager.
Reboot.
Spotify opens at startup.

I am not sure how long but a couple updates at least. Let’s say 3 months
(but it’s probably more).

Thanks for getting back to us.

In this case, we’d like you to try the following steps:

  1. Go to Task Manager and kill SpotifyWebHelper.exe process.
  2. Go to C:\Users\\AppData\Roaming\Spotify and delete SpotifyWebHelper.exe.
  3. Go to MSCONFIG and make sure Spotify is disabled under the Startup tab
  4. Restart your PC and see if the issue persists.

Let us know how it goes.

This is Windows 10. You go to the Startup tab in the Task Manager to disable startup items. MSCONFIG is no longer used for this task. (Win10 v1903)

I’ve resolved it this way:

  1. close Spotify (also in Windows tray)
  2. go to folder where Spotify intalled (for me it’s C:\Users\MyUserName\AppData\Roaming\Spotify)
  3. backup the file “prefs”, like “prefs”->”prefs.bak” (if something goes wrong)
  4. run Spotify – you should see the “Sign in” form
  5. login into your account
  6. and configure again the Spotify
  7. also I changed “cache directory” and Spotify suggested me to reboot the program, after reboot the program and reboot my PC the issue was resolved

Unfortunately that didn’t work. Spotify wants to spy on you all the time and sell your data.

Only solution i have found is take all permissions from SpotifyStartupTask.exe and SpotifyWebHelper.exe in C:\Users\MyUserName\AppData\Roaming\Spotify

To do this you right click on those two files and choose: Properties->Security->Advanced->Disable inheritance->Remove All inherited permissions from this object .

Spotify is great for streaming a huge selection of music, but the app itself can be a little overbearing. If you’ve recently installed Spotify’s desktop application, you might find that when you turn on your computer Spotify starts up without your permission. Take back your life! Here’s how to show that presumptuous program who’s boss and disable auto-start.

How To Turn Off Spotify Auto-Start on a PC

1. Click Edit in the upper-left corner of the Spotify desktop application interface.

2. Click Preferences from the drop-down menu.

3. Scroll down to the bottom of the Preferences screen.

At the bottom of the Preferences screen, there is a set of options under the heading “Open Spotify Automatically After You Log Into the Computer.” Open Automatically is selected by default.

When it comes to music streaming, there none better than Spotify, at least for me. The user interface is clean, has a huge catalog, lightweight compared other services, and most of all, the music quality is better. Not to mention, Spotify is available to through Windows Store and has a ton of options to customize the app as you want.

How to stop spotify’s automatic startup on windows 10

One of the interesting features of the Spotify app in Windows 10 is that if you shut down your system with Spotify running, the app will open itself and resume where you left off as soon as you start the system. This behavior is very similar to how Microsoft office apps work. For instance, if you shut down the computer with a Word document opened, it will be opened automatically for you so that you can start working from where you left off.

Though starting Spotify where you left off is pretty helpful, if you don’t like this behavior you can stop Spotify from opening on system startup in Windows 10 by changing a single option. Let me show you how.

Method #1: Stop Spotify from Opening on System Startup

1. First, open the Spotify application by searching for it in the Start Menu. You can also use the taskbar icon if you’ve pinned the Spotify application.

2. Once the Spotify application has been opened, click on the dropdown menu appearing on the top-right corner and select the “Settings” option.

3. The above action will open the Spotify settings page. This is where you can change different options of Spotify. For whatever reason, Spotify chose to hide the startup option under Advanced Settings. So, scroll all the way down and click on the “Show Advanced Settings” button.

4. Now, scroll down until you find the “Startup and Window Behavior” section. Under this heading, select “No” from the dropdown menu next to “Open Spotify automatically after you log into the computer” option.

The changes are saved instantly and automatically. From now on, Spotify won’t start with your system. You have to manually launch the application as and when needed.

Method #2: Disable Spotify in Task Manager Startup Applications List

Alternatively, you can also use the task manager’s startup tab to stop Spotify from automatically starting with your system. This method is useful when the Spotify app is ignoring your startup settings, for some reason.

1. To open the task manager, right-click on your taskbar and select the “Task Manager” option. If you don’t mind doing some finger gymnastics, you can also use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + Shift + Esc .

2. In the task manager, go to the Startup tab. This is where you can manage all the applications that register to start with Windows. Here, find the Spotify application from the list, select it, and click on the “Disable” button appearing at the bottom right corner.

3. Once you disable the Spotify startup entry, it should say “Disabled” under the “Status” column.

Spotify is a music streaming platform that lets you stream music right from your devices. This service offers a desktop app for Windows users as well. Unfortunately, a lot of Windows users are facing issues with the Spotify app. The Spotify app keeps starting itself on every startup of Windows.

This would have been normal behavior because a lot of apps nowadays comes with a setting that allows them to start at the start of Windows, and this option is turned on by default. But, in this case, users are noticing that the Spotify app always starts at the startup of Windows even if they have turned off the auto-start option from the app.

What causes the Spotify app to Open at Startup?

Here is a list of things that can cause the Spotify app to open at the startup.

  • Spotify app settings: The first and the most common thing that causes this is the Spotify settings. A lot of the users aren’t even familiar with this option in the Spotify app and since it is turned on by default, a lot of users are seeing the app turn on by itself at every startup. And even if you want to turn the auto-start option off, this option is well-hidden so it makes it really hard for not-so-tech-savvy users to turn it off.
  • Windows Update: The latest Windows updates can also cause this issue. There is a feature in the Windows that reopens the applications that were open on the last shut down. So, even if your auto-start option is turned off, the Spotify app will start on the next startup if you had the Spotify app open at the shutdown time.

Note:

Make sure that the Spotify app is closed before you shut down your computer. This will help you narrow down the issue that might be causing this. If the app doesn’t automatically start on the next startup then that means the issue was caused by the Windows feature.

Method 1: Disable Auto-Start from Spotify App

This is the first thing on your to-do list in the process of getting rid of the Spotify auto-start issue. There is an option that lets the Spotify app to auto-start on every startup. Turning it off might solve the issue for you. If you have already disabled this option then move to the next method. Otherwise, follow the steps given below.

  1. Open the Spotify App
  2. Click the downwards arrow beside your picture and select You can also hold the CTRL key and press P to open these settings
  1. Select Advanced Settings
  1. You should be able to see an option named Open Spotify automatically when you log in to the computer. It should be under Startup and Windows Behavior. Select No from the drop-down menu

That’s it. This should prevent the app from starting on every login.

Method 2: Disable Spotify App Auto-Start via Task Manager

Windows provide a way to access the list of applications that are scheduled to run at every startup. You can have a look at this list and disable the auto-start of the Spotify app from this list. Follow the steps given below

  1. Press and hold CTRL, SHIFT, and Esc keys simultaneously (CTRL + SHIFT + ESC). This will open the task manager
  2. Click the Startup This should show a list of apps that are scheduled to open at every startup
  3. Locate the Spotify app from this list and select it
  4. Click Disable from the bottom right corner

This should disable the auto-start of the Spotify app.

Method 3: Disable Allow Spotify to be Opened from the Web

Although it doesn’t make a lot of sense but a lot of users noticed that disabling this option, somehow, fixes the auto-start issue with the Spotify app. So, simply turn this option off by following the steps given below.

  1. Open the Spotify App
  2. Click the downwards arrow beside your picture and select You can also hold the CTRL key and press P to open these settings
  1. Select Advanced Settings
  1. Toggle off the Allow Spotify to be opened from the web It should be under the Startup and Windows Behavior section and it should be turned on by default

Check if this resolves the issue. If the problem isn’t solved after turning this option off, try to disable the Spotify app from the Task Manager as well (follow method 2). If the problem is rectified then you can keep this option turned off until the issue is fixed by the Spotify developers in the upcoming updates.+

Method 4: Rename Spotify App Exe File

Renaming the Spotify app’s executable file (spotify.exe) and Spotify launcher’s executable file (SpotifyLauncher.exe) will solve the issue for you. So, follow the steps given below to rename the Spotify executables.

  1. Go to your Desktop, right-click the Spotify shortcut icon and select Delete
  2. Press and hold CTRL, SHIFT, and Esc keys simultaneously (CTRL + SHIFT + ESC). This will open the task manager
  3. Click Processes tab
  4. You should be able to see the spotify.exe process running on the list. If you don’t see it then run the Spotify app.
  5. Right-click the spotify.exe process and select Open file location
  1. Now, close the Spotify app if it is opened
  2. Right-click the spotify.exe from the file explorer and select Rename. Add an extra 1 to the name and press Enter. It should be spotify1.exe now. Note: You can name it whatever you want, the point is to rename it.
  1. Now right clickspotifylauncher.exe from the file explorer and select Rename. Add an extra 1 to the name and press Enter. It should be spotifylauncher1.exe now.

This should prevent the Spotify app to run at every startup. You can right-click the spotify1.exe and select Create shortcut. You can cut/paste or drag it to the Desktop so you can use this shortcut to open the Spotify app.

Many Spotify users encounter a problem that looks like a bug: the Spotify app opens when you log into Windows, even when you disable its startup entry, or when you set it so that it does not start automatically after you log in. A misconfiguration in your Spotify settings causes this problem. Here is how to fix this issue in a couple of seconds:

Problem description: Spotify opens at Windows startup, no matter what

The Spotify app may misbehave and open at Windows startup even though you disabled it from the startup list and you set “Open Spotify automatically after you log into the computer” to No. No matter what you do, Spotify always opens when you start Windows.

How to stop spotify’s automatic startup on windows 10

The solution: The correct way of setting Spotify so that it does not open at Windows startup

The solution lies within the Spotify app and its settings. Open Spotify, and click your profile name in the top-right corner. In the menu that is displayed, go to Settings.

How to stop spotify’s automatic startup on windows 10

Scroll down the list of settings to the bottom, and click or tap “Show Advanced Settings.”

How to stop spotify’s automatic startup on windows 10

Scroll down to the section named “Startup and Windows Behaviour.” First, make sure that “Open Spotify automatically after you log into the computer” is set to No. Then, look for another setting which is not properly explained: “Allow Spotify to be opened from the web.”

If this setting is activated, this is what is causing Spotify to start when you log into Windows.

How to stop spotify’s automatic startup on windows 10

Deactivate the switch for “Allow Spotify to be opened from the web.”

How to stop spotify’s automatic startup on windows 10

Spotify will no longer run at the Windows startup.

What does “Allow Spotify to be opened from the web” do?

This setting is not explained well enough by Spotify. They communicate the benefit but not the downside of this setting. When you activate “Allow Spotify to be opened from the web” each time you open Spotify on a web browser, and you press the Play button, the music is sent to the Spotify app from Windows. It is not played in the browser. The same happens when you click the “Play on Spotify” button of playlists you find on the web, like the one below.

This feature is useful to many users, but the downside is that Spotify needs to run on your computer or device automatically, on each Windows startup. This is why the Spotify app opens at Windows startup, no matter what. When you deactivate this setting, the Spotify music you find on the web is played in your web browser.

Did this fix your problem?

This guide should help solve the problem in most cases. If it did not, let us know in the comments below. Also, you should contact Spotify Support and ask for help.
