How to turn off the character popups on the ios 9 keyboard

There are some features on the iPhone keyboard, like spell check, that can be helpful if you use them, but annoying if you don’t. Fortunately many of the behaviors that might bother someone when they are typing on their device can be turned on or off based on user preference.

One of these features is the pop-up characters that appear as you are typing. Since your fingers can obscure the view of the individual letters on the keyboard, the ability to see what letter you are currently pressing can be helpful. But if you don’t use those character pop-ups, then you might find that you want them to go away. Our guide below will show you how to remove the pop-up number and letter feature by turning off a setting called “Character Preview.”

iOS has always displayed the traditional pop-up character preview when a key is pressed on the virtual keyboard. Starting with iOS 9, there became a new setting to control that behavior.

In addition to turning the keyboard back to all caps, you can disable pop-up previews when pecking away on your iPhone or iPod touch keyboard.

If you’re concerned that someone might be looking over your shoulder as you’re typing in sensitive information on your iPhone, here’s how you can disable character previews.

How to disable character previews on iOS

Step 1: Launch Settings on your iPhone or iPod touch.

Step 2: Now navigate to the General → Keyboard section.

For what it’s worth, the iPad keyboard has never shown these previews so they cannot be enabled on iOS either.

Tip: In addition to the Character Preview setting, the alphabetic key caps in iOS are lowercase when typing lowercase and uppercase when Shift or Caps Lock is engaged.

Thankfully, you can easily switch your keyboards back to all caps should you find such behavior distracting.

The ability to disable character previews is a security enhancement on Apple’s part. Why? Because technology exists for logging key presses via video analysis of the pop-ups above pressed keys from camera footage of someone typing on their device.

There are a lot of different sounds that can occur when you are text messaging on your iPhone with the default settings. You may already know that you can turn off the notification sounds for text messages on your iPhone, but that won’t affect the typing sound that you hear whenever you press a key on the keyboard.

Fortunately this sound is controlled by a different setting, which you can also elect to disable. Our guide below will show you where to find the Keyboard Clicks option so that you can turn it off.

Note that you can also turn off keyboard clicks by muting your iPhone with the Mute switch on the left side of the device. This also allows you to mute the camera noise on your iPhone so that you can take pictures without the shutter sound. However, any sounds muted by this action will still be heard once you have unmuted the device.

Here is how to turn off keyboard clicks on an iPhone in iOS 9 –

  1. Open the Settings menu.
  2. Select the Sounds option.
  3. Scroll to the bottom, then turn off the Keyboard Clicks option.

My computer is acting very strangely as if it had a “life of its own!” What has been happening (and what I’ve been on the phone for hours with Apple Support) is that sometimes (intermittently) when I type a letter (usually an “e”) a bubble comes up foreign letters with accents, etc. and then the computer continues to type this letter; then erases it; won’t enter what I type and finally, I have to reboot the machine to stop the bizarre behavior. I recently found out that Apple has this feature that when one holds a letter (e for example) instead of getting a series of e’s (eeeeeeee) you instead get a bubble with foreign accented characters in a pop up bubble. I don’t really want this feature and I have read somewhere that if one uses “utilities” and then selects “Terminal” and enter the following command ” defaults write -g ApplePressAndHoldEnabled -bool false” and then log out of the user account and log back in this feature is disabled and when pressing and holding the e character one gets a string of “e’s.” (eeeeeeeee) This was in an article for Mountain Lion and I’m wondering if it will work with El Capitan (Jim Tanous @mggjim).

I’m hoping if this feature is disabled that the “possessed” entry of characters and then erasing them with a sound in the background will stop occurring. The only way I can take control of the machine after this bizarre behavior starts is to reboot the computer.

Does anybody have an idea of why my machine is acting this way and what I can do to stop it.

Your iPad’s keyboard now doubles as a trackpad for quick text selection and editing tools sitting atop the keyboard at all times.

After preparing, then updating your iPad to iOS 9, you’ll quickly discover a lot of new features. New multitasking features enable a new slide-over mode, where you can peek at, and use, an app on the edge of your screen. Then there’s split-view, which allows you to run two apps at the same time. You can even watch a video while using another app with the new picture-in-picture feature.

Last of the new multitasking features is a new virtual keyboard. The keyboard can quickly turn into a trackpad for quickly navigating and editing text, and constantly offers tool shortcuts just above the keys for simply editing.

When typing with the keyboard, you can convert it to a trackpad by placing two fingers on the screen anywhere inside the keyboard. The keys will turn dark gray, losing all letters and numbers. You can move the cursor by dragging both fingers across the screen, lifting your fingers when the cursor has reached its destination.

You can use the same setup to highlight large blocks of text. Instead of placing two fingers on the screen, however, you’ll quickly double-tap with two fingers (leaving both on the screen on the second tap). The nearest text word or character will become highlighted, with more text becoming highlighted as you drag your fingers across.

The trackpad functionality is easy to use as long as you remember one thing: spread your fingers apart just a little bit. For the first month or so of the public beta, I kept placing my fingers right next to each other and had issues. Once I figured this little trick out, life got a whole lot easier.

As you use the new keyboard throughout various apps, you’ll notice just above the top row on either side of the QuickType suggestions are shortcut keys. The keys present will vary from app to app, but the gist is the same: these keys provide valuable shortcuts to commands such as copy, paste, undo and text formatting. Get in the habit of using then instead of long-pressing on the screen, highlighting the text, then navigating through the pop-up menu.

The same trackpad-like functionality will make its way to the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus, but not older models due to it requiring 3D Touch to activate.

Apple’siOS 9 keyboard offers more than it seems and while advanced users may already know this, many less experienced iPhone and iPad owners may not yet have learned what it can do.

Quick currency

The numeric keyboard shows the dollar ($) symbol by default, but when you need to type another currency symbol, you only need to hold down the $ key and you’ll see a list of alternative symbols pop-up, slide you finger to the one you need.

Fast text edit with 3D Touch

Editing text is more accurate with a 3D Touch-enabled iPhone: just press hard anywhere on the keyboard and then slide your finger to where you want to insert text.

Predictive

Apple’s predictive text suggestions can be quite helpful but if you don’t want to see them all the time, or need a little more on-screen space just tap and drag the small predictive text window down until it disappears.

Capitalize

Want to type words in capitals? Easy: tap the Shift button twice to activate the Caps Lock feature, tap it again to turn it off.

Quickly add symbol

To use special symbols like accented vowels and the like simply tap and hold the relevant letter on the keyboard and all available special symbols will appear, just drag your finger to select. This also works for the Shift key – tap and hold it and then slide to the letter to place a character.

Double tap

So long as you have the Auto-capitalization and Shortcuts options (Settings>General>Keyboard) enabled a double-tap of the Space bar will add a full stop. The next character you write will automatically be capitalized.

Fast punctuation

Here is how we usually type in iOS 9: we write using the character palette and tap the 123 button to access the number and punctuation palette, then tap the key again to return to the default keyboard layout. Save time by tapping and holding the 123 button when you will be able to slide your finger to the number or other symbol you need.

Fast domain

When composing an email tap and hold the period button to access a list of domain endings to place in your document – in Safari you’ll access this list by tapping and holding the .com button, while in Mail you access them using the period button.

Character count

Enable the character count in Messages by enabling it in Settings>Messages>Character Count and toggling this to on. Now you’ll see a running character count to the right of the display, above the send button.

Text Replacement shortcuts

Most people don’t use text expansion shortcuts because they don’t understand how they might be useful, these are useful when:

  • You have multiple email addresses, and want to drop an address into App Store accounts, emails or anything else.
  • You want a quick way to write your phone number or address
  • You frequently use long and complex technical words in messages.

To enable shortcuts

  • Open Settings>General>Text Replacement
  • To create new Shortcuts tap the + button on the top right.
  • Enter what you want the text to be in the Phrase section
  • Enter the shortcut you want to use in the Shortcut box
  • In future when you type the Shortcut the assigned phrase will appear.

During its WWDC presentation today, Apple introduced several new enhancements for its keyboard in iOS on iPhone and iPad. These changes include a redesigned shift key for distinguishing capital letters, lowercase, and caps lock. Additionally, key lettering now switches between upper and lowercase depending on which variation of a letter will be typed, which is another tool Apple is using to more clearly define what letter case mode the shift key is in, and adds ShowCase to the list of jailbreak tweaks Apple has turned into stock features with iOS 9.

Also, the traditional pop-up character preview iOS has always displayed when a key is pressed is not present in iOS 9, with its replacement being a darkened key which is largely hidden by one’s finger when typing. This is possibly a security enhancement by Apple, as technology exists for logging key presses via video analysis of the pop-ups above pressed keys from camera footage of someone typing on their device.

Further, Apple has included several improvements under the QuickType umbrella, including a built-in Shortcut Bar, which adds formatting, attachments, cut, copy, and paste options to either side of the QuickType word suggestions above the keyboard on iPad. The Shortcut Bar can also be customized by third-party apps, allowing for even more productivity and convenience in writing apps.

Additionally, a new method of moving the on-screen cursor and selecting text has been added in iOS 9 that utilizes a two-finger swipe anywhere on the screen, including over the keyboard, to quickly adjust cursor position or highlighted text. This feature works on both iPhone and iPad, and brings the hugely popular jailbreak tweak SwipeSelection’s functionality to iOS 9 in a way more optimized on iPad.

People using wireless keyboards with their iPad will now be able to take advantage of a new level of keyboard shortcuts, including Command+Tab-like app switching from OS X and invoke Search. Apps can also add their own built-in, custom shortcuts for various actions, and users can hold down keys like Command, Option, or Control to see all the available shortcuts of a given app.
