Wink’s user interface doesn’t really focus a lot on security like other smarthome platforms do, but that has changed with a new feature added to the Wink app called Lookout. Here’s how to set it up.

Granted, you can sort of use your Wink setup as a security system and set up alerts whenever a door opens, but it’s not really meant to be for security. That’s why Lookout is finally here—it makes controlling your house much easier from a security standpoint.

To get started, open up the Wink app and tap on the menu button in the top-left corner of the screen.

How to turn your wink smarthome into a security system with wink lookout

Next, tap on “Lookout”. You may have to scroll down to get to it, depending on how many devices you have set up in the app.

Tap on “Get Started”.

Next, the app will look through all of your devices that are connected to your Wink hub and display the ones that work with Lookout. Select each one that you want to include and then hit “Next”.

The setup portion is now complete! Tap on “Go to Lookout Now” to continue.

The control screen for Lookout is pretty basic. Alerts will be enabled by default, but you can tap on the big round bell button to turn them off whenever (and tap on it again to turn them back on).

How to turn your wink smarthome into a security system with wink lookoutHow to turn your wink smarthome into a security system with wink lookout

You can tap on the settings gear icon in the top-right corner to view activity of all your sensors and devices, as well as manage which devices are included in Lookout.

Now, whenever a sensor detects motion or a door opens, you’ll receive an instant alert on your phone.

From there, you can tap on the alert to open up the Wink app. Then tap on “Take Action” at the bottom.

At this point, you can either call a friend to check up on your house for you while you’re away, or you can call 911 and have the police do it instead, depending on the severity of the situation.

How to turn your wink smarthome into a security system with wink lookout

And that’s pretty much it. Wink Lookout is easy to set up and even easier to use. Of course, it works best when you have different sensors planted all over your house, as well as sirens that can go off whenever an intrusion is detected, but it still works great even if you just have a few sensors here and there—it’s better than nothing!

As one of the more popular smarthome hubs, it makes sense that Wink recently got involved with home security by introducing its $199 Wink Lookout bundle aimed at first-time buyers. The bundle includes a siren, some sensors and a Wink hub.

Even those of us — like me — who already have a Wink hub can add some of the individual security components of Lookout, which are available separately.

This two-pronged strategy is a smart play by Wink but the question is: How well does Wink Lookout work? That’s a trickier question to answer because it depends on how you expect a self-monitoring home security system to behave. More on that later.

A modular system that includes a smart home hub

So what do you get for $199 in the Wink Lookout package? There’s a standard Wink Hub 2, a pair of Z-Wave door/window sensors, one Z-Wave motion sensor and one Z-Wave siren/chime module. All of these can be attached walls, doors and windows with included screws, or can be mounted with double-sided tape, also included. Additional motion sensors or siren/chime units are $39 each while another door/window sensor costs $29, so you can build out your system as needed, very similar to the Eye Cloud Camera system.

I love the design of the motion sensor. I call it the eyeball because that’s what it looks like, and it blinks a pleasing blue when it sees movement in its 110-degree field of view. The sensor attaches magnetically to its rounded base plate so you can easily adjust the angle. And there’s also a flat spot on the sensor back so you can stand it on the floor, a shelf or table if you’d like. In the Wink app, you have five different sensitivity settings for the motion sensor; helpful if you have pets.

The siren/chime module also looks nice but how it sounds is more important. There are three volume levels for both the siren and the chime function and you can choose from 10 different siren alert sounds. I found that automating the chime with a Wink Robot is useful: Play a pleasant sound when someone opens the front door or garage for example. The siren is really meant for a different purpose, but again, more on that in a minute. At the highest volume level though, you don’t want to be standing next to it.

Easy installation

Installation for the base products was generally easy although I used my own Wink Hub 2 to set things up. I did have a few struggles pairing the motion sensor and siren/chime until I remembered that I typically have to get very close to my hub when pairing Z-Wave devices. Once I did that, the pairing was successful. For folks without a Wink Hub, the products come pre-paired so you don’t have to go through this step, which is a nice touch.

Note that other supported Wink products can feed into Lookout as well: I was able to add my Nest Camera for motion detection as well as my Z-Wave front door lock to the Lookout system.

This is a huge benefit for those with existing smart home products, although I’d caution you before using a webcam, as any detected movement will set the system off: Again, a challenge if you have pets.

A modern twist on home security

Once I had everything paired and connected, I started to scratch my head a little. Wink says that Lookout provides actionable alerts and control. And it pretty much does exactly that because there’s no traditional arm/disarm feature. Instead, in the Wink app, there’s an Alerts On or Alerts Off button. That doesn’t stop the sensors from monitoring, it simply stops sending you notifications from them.

The idea here is that whenever Lookout detects motion or sees that a door or window is open, it will send a notification to your phone. Tap the notification and your phone will open the Wink app where you can choose to dismiss the alert or take action. If you choose the latter, you get another in-app screen with three options: Turn siren on, Call someone in your contacts list or Call 911. Essentially Lookout works as advertised in this regard.

Is that how you want your home security system to work though? There’s no right answer here and for some folks, particularly those that live alone, Lookout should be a perfect fit. I’m not so sure about how it fits me, however.

Your smartphone is the control panel

Since the entire system is smartphone based, I’d need to add my wife, son and daughter as users to my Wink account. That’s not difficult to do, and I probably should have done so a while ago. But I also have to convince my family to then install the Wink app and use it as the “security control panel” for the house.

They’re not likely going to do that: It’s taken me two years just to get them to use the multiple Amazon Echo devices in the house to turn lights on and off. In fact, because they use voice control for the lights, they’re less likely to use the Wink app for the same feature. But if they don’t use the Wink app, how will they know when the Lookout Alerts are on or off?

A perfect example is me going to bed and turning Alerts On. My son often works late shifts nearby and sometimes he drives back to his mom’s house after work. Occasionally, he drives to my house because it’s closer and he’s tired. I can easily envision the entire house woken up by the Siren when he comes in at 1am. Of course, you don’t have automate the Siren like I did in my testing. You can simply be woken by the Alert notification and decide what to do next.

Unfortunately — and maybe it’s just me, although I doubt it — I turn my phone’s Do Not Disturb (DND) function on before going to sleep. And that means I won’t get the alert if my son, or a random stranger, comes in. I suspect most people in that regard are like me, either manually enabling DND or scheduling it during sleep hours: The time you most want your home monitored for any break-ins.

The system works, but will it work the way you want it to?

Again, Wink Lookout works as advertised and it’s very possible that my use case is uniquely different than most other peoples. However, I think there’s a missing piece here for a more appealing product: Some type of connected keypad with a 10 second delay so you can get in the house and disarm the system, or even an NFC swipe tag and reader to accomplish the same thing.

Regardless of my own home, if you’re looking for an inexpensive smart home security system that provides you with total actionable control, Wink Lookout is worth the look. There’s no monthly service fee and the sensors work well at detecting motion and creating notification alerts. And there’s the added bonus of being able to build out your smarthome system with all of the other Wink-supported products, so in some regards, this is a nice two-for-one kit.

Or anyone’s smart home, for that matter.

Wink Lookout

I’ll be blunt. Never have I had so much trouble getting a smart home product to work. In fact, Wink Lookout is so difficult to get up and running—and so frustrating in actual operation—that shoppers should categorically look elsewhere for their home security needs.

Mentioned in this article

This may come as a surprise, because the Wink Hub 2 is one of our most highly recommended smart home control systems, and that recommendation remains intact. But in July, Wink was acquired by i.am+ (the tech company owned by musician Will.i.am), and things appear to be in flux. The biggest news since that acquisition is the launch of Wink Lookout, Wink’s belated passel of security sensors designed to integrate with the Wink Hub ecosystem.

I recommend you avoid them.

The Lookout hardware—that’s the motion sensor on the left, and one of the door/window sensors on the righ—is small in size, but build quality isn’t the best.

Wink Lookout isn’t a single product but a collection of products bundled together. They include a standard Wink Hub 2, two door/window sensors, a motion sensor, and a siren. All these devices are designed to work together in conjunction with the standard Wink app. Once set up, you’ll find a new icon within the app, called Lookout. But first, let’s talk about that setup.

Once you have a Hub installed and the Wink app configured, it’s time to start adding sensors. Ostensibly, this is done within the Wink app, by telling the app you’re adding a product, identifying the type of product, then simply pulling out the plastic tab that engages the battery. If all’s working well, the app and Hub will find the sensor, adding it to your Wink ecosystem. Unfortunately, with all four of the Lookout products in the package, none of these joined the network as expected.

This new section, built into the Wink app, gives you alert status at a glance.

It’s not unusual for a smart home product to fail to connect the first time, and Wink outlines steps to reset the product and try again directly within the app. In every case, I spent considerable time continually resetting and attempting again to pair the sensor to the Wink Hub, literally spending nearly a week before I got all four sensors successfully connected. This sad situation alone merits a strong “avoid” recommendation.

Once connected, my troubles continued, albeit on a less significant scale. Getting the door sensors (which feel awfully cheap in construction) correctly positioned required considerable tinkering, but eventually I was able to get them going. I had less trouble with the motion sensor, which is hyper-sensitive and boasts a sensor with a very wide range of motion detection. The motion sensor, which attaches magnetically to its base, allowing for creative positioning, emits a blue light from the sensor whenever motion is detected. This is a significant distraction that, perhaps importantly, alerts anyone in the room that a motion sensor has spotted them. This light can’t be disabled.

These sensors are intended to connect to Wink’s siren/chime unit, a small hockey puck that is meant to work as a chime when a door or window opens, or as a siren if you configure Lookout to work as an alarm. Setting this up is a bit of a pain, involving delving into Wink’s IFTTT-like “robots” system. Chimes and sirens must be configured piecemeal for each sensor, a painstaking process that requires considerable patience and attention to detail.

The Wink app itself is easier to work with, though it lacks any degree of flexibility. The app is designed to send a push notification to your phone every time motion is detected or when a door is opened or closed—and I mean every time. There is no way to set the sensitivity of the motion sensor, nor any way to set any kind of delay to prevent alerts from piling up in quick succession. The upshot is that if the sensor finds itself in a busy room, you will quickly be inundated with motion alerts arriving every 15 to 20 seconds. As there’s no way to disable these alerts without turning the system off manually altogether, you can easily receive hundreds in the course of a day—though you can fortunately configure the siren/chime to engage only during certain hours, allowing it to work as a rudimentary nighttime-only alarm system.

All told, this $199 package isn’t just difficult to get up and running, its functionality is simply too limited to merit serious consideration. Plenty of security-focused alternatives abound; better to investigate those options instead.

Startup Konnected found a use for your janky old wired home security system — to convert it into a SmartThings – or Home-Assistant-powered security system via its $69 Alarm Panel (roughly £50 and AU$90 converted).

Expected to ship to backers globally in February 2018, the Alarm Panel has raised over $115,000 on Kickstarter. Konnected’s original funding goal was just $25,000; two weeks are left on the campaign.

Here’s how it’s supposed to work. Remove your system’s existing circuit board and replace it with Konnected’s version. Each port is supposed to correspond to a particular door/window sensor, smoke alarm, motion detector or other piece of home security hardware.

While this doesn’t sound like the simplest installation, it (in theory) is about the same as setting up a thermostat . Swap out the circuit board behind your old security system’s main control unit, install the Konnected Alarm Panel in its place and return the same wires to their corresponding ports.

Note: Always consult a qualified professional if you have questions about the installation.

Konnected claims its Control Panel is a catch-all for any type of wired home security system.”Even systems 20+ years old work great,” it states on its campaign page.

How to turn your wink smarthome into a security system with wink lookout

What’s on the Konnected Alarm Panel?

Once Konnected is installed, you’ll need a Samsung SmartThings hub. The SmartThings hub is a router-tethered device designed to unite multiple smart home products under a single app. Competing products like the Wink hub do roughly the same thing. Konnected says customers will also have the option to use the Home Assistant automation platform instead of SmartThings for an open source alternative.

I haven’t had the chance to test out the Konnected Alarm Panel, but it seems like a cost-effective, yet complicated way to bring life to an outdated security system (or a newer one you simply don’t use). We’ll see.

As always, please note that CNET’s reporting on crowdfunding campaigns is not an endorsement of the project or its creators. Before contributing to any campaign, read the crowdfunding site’s policies — in this case, Kickstarter — to find out your rights (and refund policies, or the lack thereof) before and after a campaign ends.

The company is asking users not to unplug their Wink Hubs while it tries to fix the problem.

How to turn your wink smarthome into a security system with wink lookout

If your smart home is controlled by a Wink automation hub, you’d be forgiven for feeling frustrated right now. For eight days and counting, Wink has been experiencing a connectivity issue that’s meant scheduled automation tasks no longer work.

According to the Wink status page, the problem was first identified on Jan. 25 and referred to as “an issue controlling devices connected to Wink.” The good news is, Local Control of the Wink Hub continues to function, so your smart devices remain accessible. The problem is, anything you have set on an automatic schedule is offline. For example, smart bulbs set to come on and turn off at specific times each day need to be triggered manually until this gets fixed.

It’s unusual for a connectivity problem to not be resolved within a few hours, but here we are eight days later. Wink last updated its status page on Jan. 28, stating the issue had been identified and a fix was being implemented, but that was the last we heard.

If you are a Wink user, the company is asking that your Wink Hub be left plugged in. That way, Local Control should continue to function, and when a fix is implemented your Hub is available to receive any required updates. Eventually, automation should just start working again.

This comes after Wink last year required customers to buy into a $4.99 monthly subscription plan or lose internet access to their Wink products, citing “long term costs and recent economic events [that put] additional strain on our business.” Previously, Wink’s business model relied on the one-time fee customers paid for its smart home products.

What Is Smart Home Technology? \r\n\r\n

What if all the devices in your life could connect to the internet? Not just computers and smartphones, but everything: clocks, speakers, lights, doorbells, cameras, windows, window blinds, hot water heaters, appliances, cooking utensils, you name it. And what if those devices could all communicate, send you information, and take your commands? It’s not science fiction; it’s the Internet of Things (IoT), and it’s a key component of home automation and smart homes. \r\n\r\n

Home automation is exactly what it sounds like: automating the ability to control items around the house—from window shades to pet feeders—with a simple push of a button (or a voice command). Some activities, like setting up a lamp to turn on and off at your whim, are simple and relatively inexpensive. Others, like advanced surveillance cameras, may require a more serious investment of time and money. \r\n\r\n

There are many smart home product categories, so you can control everything from lights and temperature to locks and security in your home. They also happen to make fantastic gifts, whether you’re shopping for the holidays or buying a housewarming present. Here’s a rundown of the best products we’ve tested for every room of the house. \r\n\r\n

Dyson V11 Torque Drive \r\n\r\n

It isn’t a robot, but Dyson’s V11 Torque Drive is easily the smartest cordless stick vacuum we’ve seen. It automatically detects what type of surface you’re cleaning and switches the motor speed accordingly between carpets and hard floors, for just the right blend of power and battery life. An LCD on top of the handle shows remaining battery life (down to the second), your current power mode, reminds you to clean the filter, and tells you how to clear any blockages. It also filters the air as you clean, trapping 99.97 percent of particles as small as 0.3 microns. And with 20 percent more suction power than the previous model and up to 60 minutes of battery life, it’s the best argument we’ve seen yet for leaving your robot vacuum in the hall closet. \r\n\r\n\r\n
