How to upgrade to microsoft office 2016

Your options to upgrade Office are different depending on the type of Office product you currently have.

If your current version of Office is a one-time purchase (non-subscription) version of Office such as Office Home & Student or Office Home & Business, to upgrade, you need to buy the latest version. You can choose to purchase a Microsoft 365 subscription or the newest one-time purchase version.

When you’re ready to install your new product, see the section below, I’m ready to install Office and follow the upgrade recommendations.

How do I buy the latest version?

Buy a Microsoft 365 subscription
Purchasing Microsoft 365 is your best option. You’ll always have the latest features, security updates, and other improvements. You get Office’s cloud connected features to help you maximize productivity across your devices including 1TB of OneDrive storage, extra features with Office mobile apps, Skype minutes, the option to install Office across your devices, and access to support. Choose between Microsoft 365 Personal (for one person) or Microsoft 365 Family (which you can share with your family).

Buy a one-time purchase version of Office 2019
Get the newest non-subscription version of Office such as Office Home & Student 2019 or Office Home & Business 2019.

You can only install these versions of Office on one device. You’ll get security updates and fixes during the supported period, but you won’t receive new features or any of the other Microsoft 365 benefits.

I have the latest version and I’m ready to install it

Before installing the latest version of Office read through the following recommendations first.

Make sure your computer meets the system requirements for the newest version of Office.

In most cases when you run the Microsoft Office Setup program on a computer with an earlier version of Office installed, the earlier version is removed. However, there are instances when an uninstall is necessary, such as if you run into errors or problems during installation.

If you uninstall Office before installing the new version, your Office files won’t be deleted, but if your version of Office includes Outlook you may want to back up your Outlook data files. See Find and transfer Outlook data files from one computer to another.

We recommend only running one version of Office on a PC, but if you need to run Office side-by-side, see which versions are compatible in Install and use different versions of Office on the same PC.

You may need to remove older Office licenses after installing the latest version of Office on your Mac, even if you uninstalled the older version first. See How to remove Office license files on a Mac.

Ready to install

When you’re ready to install the latest version (either a subscription or non-subscription version of Office), follow the steps in Download and install or reinstall Office on a PC or Mac.

After the installation completes, your new version of Office should update automatically, or you might get a notification an update is ready to apply. (You also have the option to manually check for and apply updates.)

Microsoft 365 for home subscription

If you have an Microsoft 365 Family or Microsoft 365 Personal subscription, you already have the most current version of Office at no additional cost and should already receive the latest features to your Office apps. See What’s new in Microsoft 365 to learn more about the newest features.

If you don’t see these features, you may not have received the latest updates. Depending on your operating system, check for Office updates for PC or Office updates for Mac.

Microsoft 365 for business subscription

If your Microsoft 365 for business subscription is associated with your work or school email account (these versions of Office are usually licensed to you through your work or school), you have the latest version of Office as long as you keep it up-to-date. Depending on your operating system, check for Office updates for PC or Office updates for Mac.

If you don’t see some of the newer features in your app, you might not have received the update yet or your Microsoft 365 admin restricts Office updates until the features can tested with other programs and add-ins in your organization. Important: On January 14, 2020 support for Windows 7 ended. If you installed Microsoft 365 on a computer running Windows 7, you won’t receive feature updates to your Office apps after this date. Learn more about what this means for you in Windows 7 end of support and Office.

If you currently have a subscription to Office 365, you’ll be pleased to know you can upgrade to Office 2016 right now in just a matter of a few minutes. Today we’ll quickly show you how to do that on a Windows PC and Apple Mac.

Office 2016 is a much welcome upgrade for any existing Office installation, particularly for Mac users who’ve been suffering under the rather awful Office 2011 with its ugly, clunky interface. Office 2016 brings welcome uniformity by making the Mac version nearly identical to the Windows version.

You can easily update your existing Windows installation but all that will do is give you the latest version. So if you’re running Office 2013, you’ll get the latest stable version of 2013.

To upgrade, you will need to use the Office website and sign in with your Microsoft account.

Once signed in, you’ll simply need to click the area under “Install” where it says “New: Office 2016 is now available.”

Next, click the “Install” button on the resulting page.

Click the setup executable, either from your browser or in your downloads folder.

User Account Control should pop up to ask you if you want the installer app to make changes to your computer. Click “Yes” to continue and the installer should take care of the rest.

The upgrade process on the Mac is similar in that you will follow the same procedure – go to the Office website, click on the area where is says Office 2016 is available, and then click “Install” to download the .pkg file.

Double-click on the .pkg file to start the installer, which will be much different from the Windows installer.

Nevertheless, simply click through the prompts to upgrade your installation. Note, however, if you’re intending to upgrade from Office 2011, which is pretty terrible and thus you should, it’s best advised to uninstall that first before proceeding with the new Mac version.

Sadly, that Office for Mac version doesn’t have an uninstaller such as you would find on Windows so you will need to uninstall it manually. Luckily, you can follow our guide, complete with screenshots, to help you with that process.

In this article, I’ll discuss new features in Office 2016 and key considerations to make before upgrading to help you determine whether moving is worthwhile.

Today, Office 2016 is the most current enterprise software suite and is available as a subscription or standalone software.

Software is a big expense for any organization — whether you choose a subscription-based model or purchase the software outright. And keeping licenses up to date only adds to the headache.

Either way, licensing your products is crucial if you want users to access every available feature in the software.

Microsoft, for instance, is a stickler for making sure your software products are patched for security vulnerabilities. Regardless of the version, you better believe Microsoft requires you to install a series of patches to get support for the productivity software you purchase.

Microsoft fully supports Office 2013 at the time of this writing. So upgrading is strictly your choice.

Here are highlights of some new features in Office 2016. (Mac users: Office 2016 for PC & Mac is available, but Mac has some limitations, so be sure to check the features available with Office 2016 for Mac.)

Precise Ink shapes

Beyond the decision to upgrade Office 2013 to 2016, you also need guidance on the logistics to do it.

Depending on the size of your organization, you might already have software distribution procedures built into your group policy or another means of upgrading software. If so, upgrading to Office 2016 shouldn’t be a big deal for you.

However, if your process involves manually upgrading users, you have an entirely different headache on your hands. Distributing Office to each workstation can be a big undertaking. Many end users have customized their current Office suite and are used to working a certain way.

Besides the added functionality, your end users won’t notice much difference when upgrading Office 2013 to 2016. Office 2013 and Office 2016 look quite similar. But before moving Office suites, be sure to account for these items:

Outlook

If you’re considering moving from one Outlook to another, make sure you don’t delete your end users’ mail profile. If you delete the mail profiles, mail items will still sync in Outlook, but items such as autocomplete won’t work in the new profile. The local autocomplete cache is stored with the user’s Outlook profile, so be careful not to delete any existing mail profiles.

Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio, Project

Some templates and settings will not transfer from earlier versions of Office to Office 2016. Test in a lab environment so you don’t change how end users work.
Before upgrading to Office 2016, you also need to decide whether to move to or from a subscription-based software license.

The big advantage of Microsoft’s subscription-based license is you always have access to the latest Office suite. Not only do you get access to the latest patches, but you can also decide which license you prefer. Usually, Microsoft leaves the two latest upgrades in your software portal for you to download at your discretion.

There are a couple ways to upgrade Office 2013 to 2016. The first option depends on the permissions set up on your end users’ workstations. If they have permission to uninstall and install software, they can uninstall their current Office suite from the programs and features in the control panel. Then they can download and run the click-to-run installer from their Office 365 portal. For step-by-step instructions, see this quick video:

As a systems administrator, you may prefer to roll out the upgrade to everyone at the same time. If so, the Office 2016 Deployment Tool is the way to go.

The Office 2016 deployment tool is a command-line tool that allows administrators to customize the tool-generated configuration file. Using the custom configuration file, you can specify which products and languages to install. Choose your version of Office

Not sure which type of install you have?

Open an Office app to check your installation type

Note: If you can’t open an app to check your installation type, try the more common Click-to-Run or MSI uninstall steps first.

Create or open an existing file and select File > Account (or it might say Office Account).

Under Product information, find the About button and check for the following:

Click-to-Run installations have a Version and Build number, and include the phrase Click-to-Run.

Follow the Click-to-Run or MSI steps below.

An MSI installation doesn’t have a Version or Build number.

Follow the Click-to-Run or MSI steps below.

Microsoft Store installations have a Version and Build number, and include the phrase Microsoft Store.

If you have this installation type, select the Microsoft Store tab.

Newer versions of Office

1. Open any Office app, such as Word, and create a new document.

2. Go to File > Account (or Office Account if you opened Outlook).

3. Under Product Information, choose Update Options > Update Now.

Note: You may need to click Enable Updates first if you don’t see the Update Now option right away.

4. Close the ” You’re up to date!” window after Office is done checking for and installing updates.

You can also use the Update Options button to Disable Updates or to View Updates that were previously installed.

Office in the Microsoft Store

If you purchased Officefrom the Microsoft Store app on your Windows device, you can update Office from the same place!

Exit all Office apps.

Open the Microsoft Store app by typing “Microsoft Store” into the taskbar search and press Enter.

Click on the icon and make sure you’re signed into the Microsoft account associated with your Office license.

Click on the icon > choose Downloads and Updates.

Click Get Updates.

Note: If you get a “You’re good to go” message after clicking Get Updates, you don’t have any new updates to install. How to upgrade to microsoft office 2016

Not working? Try this:

Make sure your PC is connected to the Internet.

If Update Options is missing and there’s only the About button, you either have a volume license install or your company is using Group Policy to manage Office updates. Try Microsoft Update or contact your company help desk.

To download an update manually, see Office Updates.

If you would like to update Office but can’t open any of your Office apps, try repairing your Office suite:

Go to Control Panel > Programs > Uninstall a program.

Find and select your version of Microsoft Office on your computer. In the bar above, click Change.

Select Quick Repair > Repair. If this does not work, retry the steps, but choose Online Repair instead. If you are still unable to open any apps, uninstall and reinstall Office.

Now that Microsoft has ended support for Office 2010 as of October 13, upgrading to Office 365 is one of your primary options.

We know that switching from owning software outright to paying a subscription is a big change that many people dread. You can actually still buy Office 2019 as a standalone product if you want to stick to tradition.

If you want Office without a sub

The subscription model has its upsides, though. You don’t have to fiddle with downloads, discs, or product keys. You get constant updates, including bug fixes, security patches, and new features. Microsoft’s subscriptions also offer flexibility on how many users and machines can access a product, so you don’t have to juggle a bunch of different copies of the same software.

Here’s how it works.

How to update Office 2010 to Office 365 from the current software on your system

A straightforward upgrade is actually quite simple. If you have a single standalone PC, it can be accomplished through any of your current Office suite programs.

Open Word, Excel, Outlook, or PowerPoint and select File > Account > Update Options, then select Update Now from the drop-down menu. In Outlook, it’s File > Office Account > Update Options > Update Now. Then just follow the online prompts.

Important: Be absolutely certain you’re ready to update your software before you click that Update Now button, because it jumps directly to the Internet and launches the update, and it’s really difficult to cancel it. If you’re uncertain, choose View Updates first and review your options before proceeding.

Once installed, you can customize the desktop icons and launch the programs. Office will prompt for the new product key when you access the first program. This key has 25 letters and numbers (aka, alphanumeric) and pairs your license to your machine.

If you prefer, you can upgrade directly from Microsoft; just go to https://www.office.com/. On the main Welcome to Office menu, click Sign In to begin. Microsoft locates your account, recognizes the current versions on your system, and then provides alternatives for you to select (to purchase or rent).

Or, you can click Get Office Remove non-product link . A product sales screen opens and displays your options under the For HOME tab. Click the For BUSINESS tab to see the business options.

Because it’s “not really an upgrade,” but another purchase, the previous versions of software on your system are irrelevant to Microsoft except for determining whether to allow or disallow multiple versions to run simultaneously on your system.

Microsoft counsels against running multiple versions for a number of reasons. There are compatibility issues between system files (especially with Outlook): Some features are disabled, and some files are overwritten by the newer version leaving the older version without those files. Some commands are either obsolete or changed, which means one or both versions could fail.

Access the Microsoft Store app from the task bar on your system. Sign in first, and the Microsoft – Official Home Page appears. On the bottom left side, click Choose Your Microsoft 365, and, once again, the product sales screen opens and displays the For HOME and For BUSINESS tabs with pricing for all the different combinations of products.

Important note: Updating or upgrading the Office products will not affect your files, documents, spreadsheets, and other data. Even if they did, all of the Microsoft programs provide backward-compatible options. However, you should back up your Microsoft Outlook .pst file before you make any changes to your Outlook program. You can also back up the .pst file to a CSV file (Comma Separated Values) file, which is compatible with Excel and all databases.

Once the new update is installed, use File > Open & Export > Import/Export, then choose an action from the Import & Export Wizard dialog, such as Import from another Program or File.

Click Next, then select Comma Separated Values or Outlook Data File (.pst), and follow the prompts to restore your Outlook files.

We have office 365 but still have office 2010 on our pc’s.

We have some windows 7 machines and some windows 10 machines.

I want to upgrade office from 2010 to 2016 (current one provided by office 365).

We pay around £5k a year for just the exchange side of office 365.

To upgrade to the package that includes the newer office products we are looking at around £15k a year.

I want to pitch it to my manager to upgrade, but I need some real defining reasons for upgrading other than “its newer”. Can someone help me out here?

Just off the top of my head, the EOL for 2010 is Jan. 2020.

We ran into the same situation and decided to upgrade the majority of our users to O365 Business Essentials (Online) rather than incurring the cost of upgrading all of them to 2016.

This was my thought also, that maybe it’s worth just upgrading some of them. The O365 Business Essentials is the one I was looking to go with which includes all of the 2016 products.

I would say that the main reason is because of the end of life for both Office 2010 and Windows 7, and the vulnerabilities it will pose, not only the end of support but the lack of support for newer technologies and software, many software products that integrate with the office suite, is no longer testing on office suites like 2010, mainly due to the outdated .NET stack it runs on.

There are a number of improvements for the latest version of office, and considering that you are already in 0365, this is a logical upgrade to make.

I would not pitch that as a functional improvement but would push more towards more security, compliancy, integration and support reason for upgrading.

Do you have a hybrid configuration of Office 365 or full cloud? With the office 365 licenses you get more than just your office programs (Excel, Word, Powerpoint, Outlook , etc). We went with the Enterprise Level licenses. E1 and E3 licenses from Microsoft. One nice thing with E3 O365 licenses are users get 1TB of free OneDrive space that you can control. You can then take it to the next level and set up a GPO to copy the users (desktop,documents,pictures, and downloads) to OneDrive automatically this way its one more layer of protection in the case the hard drive malfunctions. E1 licenses are for our road technicians that only have a company phone/tablet and only require email access.

We are utilizing more with O365 then just the standard applications so the Enterprise level worked best for us.

You may have noticed that Microsoft began rolling out a new version of Microsoft Office early this week. That means that there are now three versions of Microsoft Office out in the wild—Office 2016, Office 365, and the brand-new Office 2019.

What is Office 2019?

When is Office 2019 available, and how much will it cost?

Office 2019 is on sale now, but only for commercial-level customers. Availability will be rolling out regular ol’ customers like you and me in the coming weeks. That also means we don’t yet know what the price point is for individual users, but Microsoft will likely have that info soon. Expect to potentially pay a bit more than what you’d shell out for Office 2016 (currently $150 for the “ Home and Student ” version), as Microsoft already boosted the price of the commercial version ten percent to account for its “ significant value added to the product over time .”

What are the system requirements for Office 2019?

Here’s a big change. On PCs, you’ll need Windows 10 for Office 2019; Microsoft will not support any versions of Windows 7 or 8. As always, Microsoft will make 32 and 64-bit versions of Office 2019 available.

For Mac, Microsoft will support the three most recent versions of macOS, currently macOS Sierra (10.12), High Sierra (10.13), and Mojave (10.14). As Microsoft notes:

“When a new version of macOS is released, Office 2019 for Mac’s Operating System requirement becomes the then-current three most recent versions at that time: the new version of macOS and the previous two versions. For example, at the time macOS 10.14 is generally available from Apple, Office for Mac will support macOS 10.12, 10.13, and 10.14.”

Users will also have new “Learning Tools,” including new text-to-speech, text spacing, and translator features. Mac users will also now have customizable ribbons (aka drop-down menus) in their version of the Word interface.

Outlook

Like Word, Outlook is also getting a new focus mode, called the “Focused Inbox,” to help streamline workflow and email drafting. Users can now use “@” commands for tagging people in emails, and contact cards have been overhauled.

Also, PC users will now have travel and delivery cards, while Mac users get new email templates; a Send Later function for scheduling delivery times; and read receipts. Both platforms also get Office 365 Group integration.

PowerPoint

The changes for PowerPoint are all about enhanced media and visual element support in presentations. The notable additions here are support for 3D model display/manipulation and SVG files on slides; new morph transitions; the ability to export your presentation in 4K UHD video format, and you can now write by hand and move elements with your pencil while editing.

OneNote

OneNote is arguably the biggest change included in Office 2019 . This is technically a new OneNote release entirely, one that can replace OneNote 2016 (though OneNote 2016 remains available and will be supported by Microsoft through 2025). This new version, dubbed OneNote for Windows 10, includes Ink-to-Text support, meaning your handwritten words will be turned into typed text, plus better syncing between connected devices.

Excel

Finally, Excel gets a host of new functions—like new formulas and chart options, and support for 2D maps and timelines—to better present and organize your data. PC users will also receive updates to Power Pivot, Power Query, and the ability to export to Power BI.

Better pencil support and other tweaks

In addition to these program-specific updates, there are also changes that apply to all Office 2019 software. The most important of these is Microsoft’s beefed-up support for digital pencils, like expanded “roaming pencil case” support, which lets users write by hand and move parts of documents with their pencil, as well as new support for pressure sensitivity and tilt recognition. Office 2019 also comes with some behind-the-scenes changes such as monthly security updates and a reduction to network bandwidth use.

Will Office 2019 replace Office 365?

No. In a post announcing the software release , Microsoft makes sure to point out that Office 2019 is a standalone package of its software geared primarily towards private users and businesses who do not have the necessary internet access required to use the cloud-based Office 365. Because of this, many of the features present in the Office 365 versions of these apps are not included in their Office 2019 counterparts, especially cloud-based and collaborative features.

Furthermore, Microsoft makes it clear that while Office 2019 will be receiving regular security fixes, it will not be getting expanded feature updates, while Office 365 users can still look forward to new and updated features through regular monthly updates just as they always have.

The bottom line here is that Office 2019 is not going to replace Office 365, and it really isn’t meant to. That said, regardless of the particular use case, Office 2019 still fills a crucial role and services a section of Microsoft’s customer base that may have felt a bit neglected since Office 365 took the spotlight.

Well i am not able to fully understand how to do. so far i am able to understand is that i need to extract the content from office removal software and create a batch file which the author provided. i did both the things and paste into a single folder and then created a package . Can u tell me step by step how to do all that ?

Question

I’m having trouble figuring out the best way to update a dev/test system to Office Pro Plus 2016.

My machine has Windows 10 Pro installed on it. It also has Office 2013 Pro Plus (x64) installed from the MSDN ISO. I’ve got VS 2015 and SQL Server 2014 also running.

In my first attempt, I did an uninstall of Office 2013, then installed Office 2016 (I think it installed the x86 version). After doing this the start button in Windows would not function, and I could get Office 2016 to run.

I rolled back my VM (which should have meant no Office 2016 bits were present) and started the Office 2013 uninstall again. I noticed a warning saying I had other versions of Office installed already and that after I uninstall Office 2013, I should repair remaining Office installs. However, in my “Programs and Features” list, I didn’t see any Office listed other than the Office 2013 I was trying to uninstall. I assume maybe it was picking up some tooling installed with VS, but I don’t know what I need to repair.

So, rather than uninstall Office 2013, I tried to just run the Office 2016 Pro Plus iso from MSDN while leaving Office 2013 x64 in place. I guess it runs a 32-bit install by default because it said that the install wasn’t compatible with my 64-bit version off Office 2013. So, rather than use the auto-run, I ran the 64-bit Office 2016 install from the .iso. The install ran to completion, and it seems like I have Office 2013 and 2016 running side-by-side. However, from other forum postings, it sounds like this isn’t actually supported so I’m not clear if I really have a running setup.

Are side-by-side installs supported? If not, what’s the proper way to update my machine to Office 2016? If I keep a side-by-side config, how much trouble will I run into when I try to work on my code that automates Office?
