Millions of Quantum gateways are vulnerable to attack.

How to upgrade your verizon mi-fi firmware to fix connection problems

If you’re a Verizon FiOS customer, you probably have one of these for your home WiFi – the Quantum Gateway router shown above. You’ll want to upgrade the firmware on it ASAP, as security researchers have discovered vulnerabilities that could allow hackers to take over both the router and your whole home network.

Researchers from Tenable put up a detailed blog post today with the three vulnerabilities explained, all of which affect Verizon FiOS’ Quantum Gateway router. For their part, Tenable followed responsible disclosure proceedings, making Verizon aware back in December. Verizon fixed the issues and released a firmware patch on March 13.

With millions of customers, the FiOS routers would pose an attractive target for hackers, so it’s good to see this was patched out quickly. Once an attacker has taken over your router, almost everything you do on your home network is up for grabs. That could range from pranks on your IoT smart devices and lights, to siphoning off bank credentials and other important information.

While the thought of having your router vulnerable to attack is frightening, the three attacks outlined here would need other information to work

The attacker would need to know the WiFi password, login credentials to the router, and also would have to be close enough to connect to the WiFi. That makes anyone who has changed their password from the default factory settings already protected.

While most customers automatically received the update, Verizon says that a small percentage with a particular version of the Quantum Gateway haven’t yet been patched, and will need updating. Verizon’s routers automatically connect to the update server and check for new firmware on boot, so if you think you haven’t received the update, just power-cycle your Quantum Gateway. That should pull down the new patch. You can check for the current firmware version at System Monitoring > Router Status from the management portal on your router.

Verizon does release firmware files for its routers, but the patch for this crop of vulnerabilities hasn’t been uploaded as a standalone file yet. Once they do, grab Version 02.02.00.13 from here, then while you’re on the same network as the Quantum Gateway, go to the hidden firmware update management page and upload the file.

Do you use a Quantum Gateway router? Was yours updated automatically? Let us know down below in the comments or carry the discussion over to our Twitter or Facebook.

Every morning we have to press the power button on the MiFi unit or our computers can not connect. Same is true if we let the unit sit for a while. This is an annoying problem during the day since if we want to bring on a new computer we have to power cycle the unit and that knocks everyone else off. Looking at the logs in the MiFi we see an IP conflict. The Macs etc are expecting to get an IP address from the MiFi. When it fails the Mac says it has a self assigned IP address and can’t connect to the Internet.

My limited network knowledge says it looks like the MiFi is trying to give out the same IP as it did the last time the Mac was connected and it is invalid. I wonder if the ARP tables are not getting cleared.

Once we power cycle the unit it works fine for the 2 Macs, WiFi printer and Ceiva Photo frame.

If you have worked with Verizon it take several calls to get someone to open a ticket. Now they think it is a problem with their tower in our area. I don’t think this is the case. I think we need a network specialist to take a look at the MiFi Logs.

I am also trying the Sprint hotspot box and it will be interesting to see if that has the same problems.

An upgrade is when you buy a mobile device through Verizon to replace a mobile device that’s already using a line on your account.

You can upgrade by buying a new or certified pre-owned device, and paying full price or using device payments. (The device must be “upgrade eligible” to use device payments).

You can also replace a device on your account with a device you already own. Learn more on the Bring Your Own device page.

When can I upgrade a mobile device on my Verizon account?

You can upgrade a device if your account is not past due and you bought the device you want to replace:

    • At retail price – you can upgrade to a new device any time.
    • With a device payment agreement – you can upgrade when any of these applies:
      • You paid off your device payment agreement.*
      • You do an early upgrade. Learn more about the iPhone early upgrade program or the early upgrade program for the Samsung Galaxy S10 5G.
      • You bought your device at a discount for signing a 2-year contract and that contract ended.

*When you pay off your device agreement, any monthly promotional credits you get for that device will stop.

How do I know if a device on my Verizon account is upgrade eligible?

To learn if your current device can be upgraded, go to your Device overview in My Verizon. Scroll down to view your devices. “Upgrade now” appears under eligible devices.

To find the upgrade eligibility date for other devices, tap the device, then tap Check Upgrade Options.

Can I upgrade my mobile device online if I have a pending order on my account?

No. Pending orders must be completed or removed before you can upgrade a device

An Account Owner or Account Manager can remove a pending order on your My orders page in My Verizon. Tap or click View pending account changes then follow the prompts to delete the pending account change.

Can I upgrade a non-phone device on my account?

Yes. You can upgrade an upgrade-eligible, non-phone device (e.g., Jetpack, tablet, smartwatch, etc.).

If you use device payments for the new device, then you can only upgrade to the same type of device (i.e., a connected device or a tablet/internet/home device). If you pay full price, you can upgrade to any device type, including a phone.

How do I upgrade a mobile device on my Verizon account?

If your account is not past due and you have an upgrade eligible device, you can upgrade by visiting your Device overview in My Verizon. Choose the device you want to replace and follow the prompts.

How do I upgrade and change my monthly mobile data plan?

When you upgrade your device you can choose to change your plan or keep the same plan:

    1. Go to your Device overview in My Verizon.
    2. Tap Upgrade now under the device and follow the prompts to choose a new device and optional accessories. You’ll have the option to keep your plan or explore a new plan.

Switching device upgrade eligibility with another device

How can I transfer upgrade eligibility from one device to another?

If you have a device on your account that’s “upgrade eligible” you can transfer that eligibility to a device on your account that isn’t eligible.

When you transfer eligibility to another device, the original eligible device:

    • Is no longer eligible to be upgraded.
    • Assumes the other device’s device payment contract ending date.

    To transfer eligibility:

    1. Go to your Device overview in My Verizon in My Verizon.
    2. Select a device that has an “Upgrade now” link.
    3. Click Transfer upgrade.

If the Transfer Upgrade link doesn’t appear, you may not be eligible to transfer, or don’t have an eligible device.

  • Select the mobile number of the device to which you want to transfer. Click Transfer.
  • Upgrade fee, order status and billing

What is the device upgrade fee? Is it the same as the device activation fee?

We charge a one-time $35 fee any time you activate or upgrade a mobile device on the Verizon network. This fee applies regardless of the device type, since each device is set up individually:

    • The activation fee is a one-time charge for activating a new line of service on the Verizon network.
    • The upgrade fee is a one-time charge for changing to a new device on the Verizon network. This fee is refunded if you return the device within 30 days of the date of purchase.

For this charge, Verizon gives access to a range of services, tools and personalized support to help ensure your device is set up for a seamless experience on America’s most awarded network:

    • 30 days of personalized tech support for smartphones (60 days if purchased online). Upon activation or upgrade, the line is sent a free Verizon text with a 30 (or 60) day link for personalized support.
    • Provisioning and troubleshooting of a Verizon SIM card.
    • Verizon Smart Setup – Assists in setting up the device, migrating your information, backing up your phone (facilitating content and contact transfer) and helping you process any trade-in.
    • 2-day shipping for online orders or ship from store.

I did an upgrade. How do I check the status of my order?

You can check your order status on your My orders page in My Verizon. Tap an order to view its status.

Miután elindította a frissítést, a problémák többnyire eltűntek.

Megjegyzés: Számos Mi-Fi típusú eszköz van a Verizon-tól, és ugyanaz a folyamat mindegyikre nézve működni fog.

    A Mi-Fi firmware frissítése

Csatlakoztassa a készüléket a vele szállított USB kábellel.

Does anyone know how to get poor coverage or reception issues fixed?

Has anyone else been having issues where their 4gLTE signal drops to 3g randomly or cuts directly to no signal or 1x for minutes in previously covered areas?

I really don’t know why but about 2 months ago this happened and has been getting worse. I have been resetting my phone regularly to compensate for this or switching the mobile data off and then on again to get the 4g signal back. Now it has been occurring at my work and at home when I live in supposedly fully covered areas. I’ve finally done a factory reset hoping this would fix it but it still happens.

I’ve looked through the VZ website and can’t find a single number to call or link to help me figure this out and the VZ help line is packed so I can’t get through when I have breaks at my more than Full-time job!

Android phones have not let me down before so I don’t know if it’s the phone or the VZ service, which is substantial in cost.
