ARC Welder is a Chrome Extension that allows users to run Android mobile apps through the Chrome browser on any operating system on Windows PC. Some apps do not work on ARC Welder while others work.
- To download and install ARC Welder as your chrome extension.
- Go to extensions and search for ARC Welder, or just click on the link above.
- A new window with different icons will open. Here you can see an icon of ARC Welder on App’s page.
- To launch ARC Welder, click on that icon.
- A prompt window will be opened with a “Choose” button.
- By clicking on “Choose” you can select the directory where ARC Welder will write files.
- After choosing a directory, click on “Add your APK”.
- A new window will open. Now, navigate to the location where you downloaded the APK file.
- Open the APK file. A prompt window will be opened to configure display settings.
- You can configure display settings before launching the app. When you are done with display settings, just click on “Launch App” button.
Android allows you to run multiple apps at a time but you are not allowed to do it here. If you want to add another app then you must close the launched app. Otherwise, ARC Welder will close the first app to launch the new app.

Now it is possible to run Android apps on desktop computers running with Google’s Chrome browser. Google has come up with an impending solution that lets Android apps run on any machine with Google’s Chrome internet browser.
Dubbed as the Google Arch Welder, it runs on Windows, Mac, Linux, and Chrome OS all thanks to Native Client (“NaCL”). Basically, it is a Chrome extension that’s designed to be a developer tool. Users who have an access to the Chrome browser can install and run a number of Android apps within your browser.
“The App Runtime for Chrome (Beta), or ARC, lets you run your favorite Android apps on Chrome OS. By following these steps, you can try out the App Runtime for Chrome (Beta) during this Developer Preview. Open ARC Welder, attach your APK and select your options. Click Launch App to test your app. When testing, file a bug if something doesn’t work,” wrote the Google devs.

Download the Google Arc Welder
Go to the Chrome Store and download the Arc Welder. It comes in at 11.83MB and runs just like any other Chrome app. Once installed, it can be open via the Chrome app launcher.
Download the app
Now, you need to add an.apk app file. Add a third-party APK file host such as APKMirror.com.
Test your app
Once you have your .apk app file downloaded to your PC, click the button shown (picture below), navigate to the file on your computer, and click “Open.”
Now, you can choose between “Portrait” and “Landscape” modes, and you can choose whether you’d like your app to run as if it were running in “Tablet” mode or “Phone” mode. Alternatively, there’s another option to maximize the window.
Launch the app

Google is always exciting. This time they have enabled us to run Android apps on Chrome with Arch Welder, a developer tool which will help you test your apps. It’s no wonder that you will see a lot of Chrome Store apps in the screenshots (please don’t judge me).
Note: You can run Android apps on Chrome OS or browser by using this newly released tool. They will be buggy and some will downright crash upon booting. Some will work flawlessly though. So I urge you not to consider this new tool a permanent replacement for actual test devices. This guide-like article will use a Windows based PC with Chrome browser to run a few Android apps. This is not a fully loaded guide but will take you through the proper paces.
Running Arc Welder
Step 1: Load Chrome
If you have a Chrome OS device there will be actually no need to download the Chrome browser, chances are you are using it as it is. If you have a Windows based PC at disposal and want to run Android apps by using Arc Welder, you will need to get the Google Chrome Browser. You can get that from this link.
Now that you have downloaded the setup, install the browser at a preferred location. The whole process will take a few minutes to complete. The Chrome Browser for Windows is an excellent browser which uses very low resources, but I have noticed a significant decrease in battery drainage while using this browser. Firefox however is more stable but gobbles up a lot of RAM for some reason.
Step 2: Get Arc Welder
You can get Arch Welder by going to the Google Chrome Store but who wants to do that right? Here is a direct link to the app page.
From there just click on Install and the app will begin downloading. It is also installed automatically and a convenient icon is placed on the Desktop or start menu depending on your personal preferences. The app will show as a separate entity and can be directly launched from the shortcut.
Step 3: Launch the Works
Now you will need to launch the app from whatever way is convenient for you. I have for some reason a persistent Chrome app box displayed after installation. I will use that to launch the Arc Welder to run Android apps.
The app may take some time to launch so please be patient, it is not hung or something. After a few seconds you will see the welcome screen. It will ask you to select a directory on your storage. I recommend making a new folder at some convenient location for the sole purpose of using Arc Welder.
Step 4: Find Some APKs
Unfortunately the app is not linked with the Google Play Store and hence you cannot download apps directly on the app to use. But this was expected, it is after all a developer tool first and foremost. So if you are making a videogame, you will surely have a prototype. If not there are a ton of sites which host APKs. You will just need to type this in the Google search bar to get instant results. I already had a few APKs laying around so it wasn’t much of a problem for me.
Step 5: Load Them Apps
Tap on the Add your APK button and the app will open a file browser. Simply go to the location where the APK is located and select it. Here you can see that I have loaded a TurboScan APK on the app. This is the app which was featured on the best scanner apps for Android list and I made a backup of the app to check if permissions check out or not.
A point to be noted here is that the Arc Welder is not able to load multiple Android apps at once. So you will constantly be needed to remove the previous APK from the app’s cache. Don’t worry as the actual APK will not be harmed in any way.
Step 6: The Testing Stuff
After the APK is loaded you will be taken to the settings screen. From there you can select the orientation of the screen, for example some apps run good in Landscape mode. You can also select the form factor of the virtual device you will be testing the APK. Then there is some actual developer information which I’m sure will help the developers only and not for us.
Step 7: Launch the App
Now comes the part of running Android apps on Chrome browser. After being satisfied by your settings, click on the Launch App button. The app will take some time to start, so don’t get worried if the app goes unresponsive for a while. The app will open in a new window which will automatically be launched.
The above screenshot shows the TurboScan app in its unnatural habitat. As you can see I have already reached the settings and am testing the app. I’m sorry to announce that you won’t be able to actually scan documents by this method. Here is a good puzzle game named Tangled running on the Arc Welder. This game works flawlessly on the app though.
Now that you can run Android apps for Chrome with Arc Welder, tell me what kind of apps you are going to run. Android apps are the best. The only thing cooler than having them run on your phone is if you could somehow bring them to your desktop. Well, you can. Using Chrome and Google’s App Runtime for Chrome (ARC for short), developers were given the ability to port their Android apps by having them run as a Chrome app. Initially there were only 4 apps available (Duolingo, Evernote, Sight Words, and Vine), and only for Chrome OS users, although a “hack” was later discovered.
But now, Google’s new Chrome app — ARC Welder — gives developers and ordinary folk the ability to test and just play around with Android apps straight from the Chrome web browser. Set up is easy, just download the ARC Welder Chrome app and once launched, select the zip file or APK of your application you want to run. From there, you can decide if you’d like the app to run in portrait or landscape mode, tablet or phone mode, and a few other parameters.
Once you launch the app, you’ll have a mostly functional Android app running on your desktop with little fuss. Not every app plays nice with ARC, so your mileage may vary. ARC Welder offers an easy and streamlined method for application testing. At the first step, the user will be required to add the bundle into the existing application menu. Users are provided with the freedom to write to any file or a folder which can be opened via ARC software assistance. Any beginner developer or a user can choose to leave the settings page as they (settings) will be set to default if skipped or left unsaved.
Here’s how to run ARC Welder tool for running android application:
- Download or upgrade to the latest version of Google Chrome browser.

Eventually, Google hopes, you’ll be able to run potentially millions of Android apps within Chrome or Chrome OS once they’re formally ported over. But you can get make that vision start to happen today—with a new Google tool called ARC Welder.
This week, Google began more widely publishing a developer tool called App Runtime for Chrome, designed to allow developers to quickly port apps like VLC and others from Android to Google’s Chrome OS. Chrome and Chrome OS have a small number of native apps, but lack the broad app support that Android does.
Then ARC Welder arrived on Thursday—a developer tool in the Chrome store that lets you to try out your own Android apps on Chrome or the Chrome browser. We tried it, and some of those Android apps work pretty well already.
ARC Welder is a new developer tool that allows you to “test” a single Android app within Chrome.
The story behind the story: Let’s make one thing clear: ARC Welder is a developer tool, designed to assist developers to port their Android apps over to Chromebooks and Chrome OS. (Developers can test apps on Chrome running on a PC, Mac, or Linux, but they can’t be published to the Chrome Web Store.) Any Android app that you try to port over it will likely be glitchy, and there’s a chance that it won’t work, period. With that said, running Android apps on your Chromebook is fun, just to see what will work and what won’t.
Track down some APKs
For testing, I used the recent Hisense Chromebook released by the Chinese manufacturer this week. I made sure that the Chromebook was upgraded to the latest version of Chrome OS, using the beta, rather than the stable channel. You’ll need to download the ARC Welder app itself from the Chrome store, of course.
What ARC Welder does is is fairly straightforward: The app allows you to launch an Android app (packaged up as an APK file) within Chrome. The app simply intercepts instructions to and from an Android phone or tablet, and routes them through your computer. That means, of course, that apps that depend on location, the back-facing camera, or the orientation of your phone, won’t work. (Fortunately, using the trackpad to simulate swipes and taps seems to satisfy an app that thinks it’s living on a touch-enabled tablet or phone.)
To get an APK file, however, isn’t necessarily that simple. Google doesn’t want Android users to download APK files per se, but use the Google Play store instead. But there are at least a couple of sites that provide you APKs of some of the most popular apps, including AndroidAPKsFree.com and APKmirror.com. You should find it relatively easy to find and download APKs of Snapchat, Kik, or Clash of Clans, for example.
For testing, I tried downloading three Android apps: VLC, Microsoft’s SmartGlass for Android, and Hill Climb Racing, a simple physics-based driving game.
Unfortunately, ARC Welder only supports one app at a time, so don’t expect to run a multitude of Android apps simultaneously, as you might do on your smartphone. When you open the app, it will ask you for the name of the APK you wish to run—and close any other Android apps that it has running. Opening an APK is as easy as clicking on it, however, then selecting what mode to run it in. You can choose to run the app in phone mode, for example—but there’s little incentive too, especially as your PC display is oriented in landscape mode, like a tablet. Your best bet is to tell ARC Welder to open the app in tablet mode, and in landscape; whether you choose to maximize the app to take up your entire screen is up to you.
Apps like Vine are “packaged” apps, which mean they use Web technologies to simulate how the app works.
I was surprised at how well Android apps translated to my Chromebook screen—and what unexpected glitches resulted. VLC, for example, seemed to run just fine—but the app defaults to an Android file structure, so actually finding a video file on your hard drive proved impossible without knowing the path to the file system. (Unfortunately, I didn’t.) And when I tried to select a networked video stream, the app crashed.
I had better luck with the SmartGlass app, which I was able to log into using my Microsoft account. Unfortunately, the version of the app published to the APKMirror site was the Xbox 360-specific version of the app; I own an Xbox One. When I tried to download the One version, the app directed me to Google Play. Stymied!
Hill Climb Racing, surprisingly, worked quite well.
Finally, I tried Hill Climb Racing, a relatively simple driving game where you’re tasked to accelerate and brake to control a jeep across a series of hills and jumps. And to my surprise, it worked very well. I couldn’t connect to the Google billing services to buy virtual currency, but the game otherwise ran smoothly. It’s not exactly like an Android tablet, of course; I had to mouse over the icons for gas and break instead of tapping on them.
Please don’t consider ARC Welder to be a one-stop utility for running Android apps on Chromebooks or Windows—it’s simply not. It might not even be at the level of beta software. But as a vision of what Android apps might look like within the Chrome ecosystem, it’s eye-opening.

The process is much the same, no matter which platform you’re using Chrome on. Simply head to the Chrome Web Store and grab the ARC Welder extension to get everything you need installed.
ARC Welder is a beta tool and mainly directed at developers. Still, the process of loading an app is quite simple. It is similar to the platform Google use to run Android apps on Chrome, “without Play Store”.

Not every app will run, and some running might miss few components.Unless you’re the app developer and have access to the app’s code, ARC Welder doesn’t have native support for Google Play Services currently. So Google’s apps and some third-party ones will refuse to run.
How to install ARC Welder app on your system?
You will find ARC Welder in the Chrome Web Store. Click the “Install” button to get started.
Click “Add” to install the ARC Welder into your Chrome apps.
Once the Arc Welder app is added, you will have to find some APKs to run. There are few sites that archive legitimate free APKs, like APK Mirror.
When you’ve found some, open Chrome, your Chrome Apps, and then start ARC Welder.
When you first run it, you’ll need to select a directory the APK can be written to. Click “Choose” and then either select an existing location or create a new one.
Next, it’s time to load your first APK. Click “Add your APK” to begin.
Navigate to the folder where you saved your APK files and select one. Now you’ll be presented with quite a few options, such as how you want the orientation, any metadata you want to add, etc.
Don’t worry if you don’t want to mess with any of this, just leave all of it to the defaults and click “Launch App”.
Most of these options are self-explanatory. For the purposes of just trying stuff out, we don’t need to mess with any of it.
Chances are quite good that many of the APKs you try to load will not work. We tried to load Facebook and Google Play, but both seemed to hang. However, it is quite interesting to run android apps without an android device.
