Finally express yourself properly with these Animal Crossing: New Horizons reactions

How to use reactions in ‘animal crossing new horizons’ from your smartphone

To fully express yourself to your villagers, you’ll need to unlock the full suite of Animal Crossing: New Horizons reactions. These reactions are little visual representations of your daily range of emotions, and let you properly emote what your current mood is to your fellow islanders, and anyone else who might be visiting.

There are over 40 Animal Crossing: New Horizons reactions to unlock, and they range from simple things like ‘greet’ or ‘laughter’ to more complicated emotions like ‘aggravation’ or ‘distress’. You can use them near another villager to interact with them. See a horrible tarantula scuttling around your island? Use the fearful reaction. See a pretty butterfly flutter on by? That’s the glee reaction, surely? Anyway, you get the idea.

Thankfully, it’s really easy to start building up a library of emotes, as you can simply get them by playing the game and talking to your fellow villagers.

You’ll get your first one as early as day four in my experience. Just pay attention to any villager calling to you by name. Stop to talk to them, and you may get gifted a reaction. If you play regularly, you’ll start earning a handful of reactions a week – roughly one new reaction every other day at first – meaning you’ll soon be able to better represent all of your various feelings more quickly and efficiently.

How to use Animal Crossing: New Horizons reactions

If you’re feeling the need to really emote, you can access all of your Animal Crossing: New Horizons reactions by pressing XR. This will bring up a quick access wheel that houses eight reactions. You can select the one you want to use with the left joystick, and then unleash it on your island with a quick tap of A.

If you have more than eight reactions to your name, you can press Y to see them all. From there, or from the reaction wheel itself, you can reassign any that you’re not aligning with, and put them in the quick access wheel. From the library screen you can also press Y to try any on for size too.

Reactions are a fun part of expressing yourself in Animal Crossing New Horizons, especially when you are playing with other people. Throughout the game, your villagers teach you different reactions to use, each of them representing a certain feeling or emotion. In the first part of the fall update, two new reactions have been added to the game, and both are related to Halloween. They are called Haunt and Scare. Here’s how to get both Halloween reactions in Animal Crossing New Horizons.

How to Get Halloween Reactions

The Halloween reactions are very easy to get, but they’re only available for a small time frame. In fact, you can only get them on one day: October 31.

If you want the reactions sooner than that, you’ll have to time travel to Halloween. Otherwise, you’ll just have to wait until the end of the month.

On October 31, Jack the czar of Halloween will appear in your town plaza from 5 p.m. until midnight. Once he’s there, you can talk with him and offer to give him a piece of candy, which you can buy in Nook’s Cranny throughout the month of October.

After giving him the first piece of candy, he’ll teach you the Haunt reaction.

To get the second reaction, you’ll need to have a second piece of candy and give it to one of the villagers living on your island. In return, they’ll teach you Scare, the second reaction.

You’ll be glad to know that it’s easier than ever to use reactions in New Horizons with the updated Nook Link app on your phone. You can now tap any reaction on your phone screen to use it in the game.

That’s everything you need to know about how to get the Halloween reactions in Animal Crossing New Horizons. While you’re waiting for October 31, you can prepare by finding out how to get Halloween costume items in the game.

Milling about your island oasis and talking with your fellow residents is half the fun of Animal Crossing: New Horizons. They can often be found singing, fishing, or just chilling under a tree. But if you don’t want to stop and chat — yet feel bad running by them without saying a word — you’ll appreciate the Reaction system in New Horizons. This allows you to perform one of 44 reactions and quickly let your friends know how you are feeling.

Unlocking Reactions is easy — just keep talking with your villagers every day. Eventually, one of them will show you how to use Reactions. For most players this tends to happen around day three or four. Just be sure to keep an eye out for your fellow islanders. If one of them is running towards you with something exciting to say, it’s best not to run in the opposite direction — they might want to give you your first four Reactions.

Most Reactions can be used to interact with other villagers as long as you are within a few feet of them. It’s a great way to quickly engage with your virtual friends without having to scroll through multiple windows of dialog.

Acquiring new Reactions beyond the initial four seems to be a random process, but they are always passed out by villagers. Just as it was when first unlocking the system, every now and then you’ll have an excited resident come barreling towards you. Usually this indicates they have something to give you, and every so often that will be a new Reaction. So put on a brave face, be friendly, and chat with your neighbors on a daily basis. It’ll take a while to collect all the Reactions, but if you play your cards right you should be able to learn a new one at least every week.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons on Switch allows players to express themselves using cute reactions.

Randomly, one of your villagers may shout your name and run up to you as you walk by. After doing this, they’ll teach you reactions. The first time they teach you reactions, you’ll learn Joy, Delight, Greetings, and Surprise. After that, they’ll start teaching you a random assortment when they approach you.

To perform an emote, press ZR to open up a wheel menu. You can reassign what reactions appear on the wheel using the X button, and you can open a full menu of all your reactions with the Y button.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons has 44 reactions to collect, and there’s even a Nook Mileage task that rewards you with Miles and titles for collecting them.
