If you’re sick of having to find and fumble with the light switch every time you enter a dark room, you can use SmartThings to automate that process and have the lights turn on automatically when you enter.

There are a couple of ways you can do this, and it depends what smarthome products you have in your arsenal. To trigger the automation for the lights, you can either use a SmartThings open/close sensor or a SmartThings motion sensor. As for the lights themselves, you can use a SmartThings Outlet (or a third-party smart outlet connected to SmartThings) with a lamp plugged in, or if you have Wi-Fi light bulbs like Philips Hue, you can use those as well.

To set this up, start by opening up the SmartThings app on your phone and selecting the “Marketplace” tab at the bottom-right corner of the screen.

Tap on the “SmartApps” tab at the top if it isn’t already selected.

Next, tap on “Lights & Switches”.

Select “Smart Lights”. It will likely be the first option at the top.

Tap on “New Lighting Automation”.

Tap inside the box where it says “Which lights do you want to control?”.

Place checkmarks next to the lights you want to turn on. If you have a lamp plugged into a smart outlet (from SmartThings, Belkin WeMo, etc.), select that in the list. Hit “Done” in the top-right corner.

Next, tap inside the box where it says “What do you want to do?”.

Select “Turn On” and then tap “Done” in the top-right corner.

There are several options to choose from, but in this case we’re going to select “Motion” and have our SmartThings motion sensor decide when to turn the lights on. Then, tap on “Done” in the top-right corner.

Tap inside the box where it says “Which motion sensors?”.

Select the motion sensor that you want to use and then tap “Done”.

Next, turn on the toggle switch next to “Turn off after motion stops”. This is an optional step, but it will ensure that the lights turn off when you leave the room.

If you do this, tap inside the box where it says “After this number of minutes”.

Enter in a number here–1 or 2 minutes should be fine, but you can make it whatever you want.

Tap on “Next” in the top-right corner of the screen.

If you want to give this automation rule a name, tap on the toggle switch next to “Edit automation name”.

From there, tap inside the box where it says “Enter custom name” and type in a name for the automation rule. When you’re done, tap “Done” in the top-right corner.

The new automation rule will appear in the list. If you want to remove it, simply swipe it to the left and tap “Remove”.

The aim of this project is to automatically turn on or off the lights in a room by detecting the human movement. We implemented this project using 8051 Microcontroller and two Infrared (IR) sensors.

Since the job of the circuit is to turn on the light when someone enters the room and turn off the light when the last person leaves the room, the project has to internally count the number of visitors entering and leaving the room. Hence, the project acts as an Automatic Room Lighting System as well as Bidirectional Visitor Counter.

Warning : A 230V light bulb is used in this project and is connected to relay and mains supply. You should be very careful when connecting the mains wires.

Circuit Description

Let us see the design of the circuit for automatic room lighting project. The circuit diagram shows all the connections with respect to microcontroller. If you are doing this project on a development board, some of the connections mentioned in the circuit diagram might not be necessary.

Also, we have used modules for Relay and IR Sensor and hence, the connections are shown with respect to those modules only. Corresponding circuit diagrams are also provided.

Coming to the circuit design, a 16 x 2 LCD Display, two IR Sensors and a 5V Relay Module must be connected to the 8051 Microcontroller. First, connect the 8 data pins of the LCD to PORT1 pins i.e. P1.0 to P1.7.

The 3 control pins of LCD i.e. RS, RW and E are connected to P3.6, GND and P3.7 pins respectively. A 10 KΩ Potentiometer is connected to contrast adjust pin of LCD i.e. its pin 3.

Two Reflective type IR Sensors are connected to PORT2 pins i.e. P2.0 and P2.1. Detailed circuit of the IR Sensor is mentioned in the Component Description.

The input of the 5V Relay is connected to PORT0 pin P0.0. The detailed circuit of the 5V Relay module used in the project is explained in the component description section. Alternatively, you can construct the circuit as per the circuit diagram (which consists of 5V Relay, Transistor, Diode and a Resistor).

Component Description

IR Sensor Module

An Infrared or IR Sensor is a simple circuit that is used to detect objects (Proximity Sensor) or measure distance (Range Finder). An IR Sensor consists of 3 components: an IR Transmitter (IR LED), an IR Receiver (like a Photo Diode) and a signal processing circuit.

We have used reflective type IR sensor modules in this project. The detailed circuit diagram of the module is shown in the following image.

5V Relay Module

A 5V Relay Module is used in this project which helps 8051 Microcontroller to operate high voltage AC loads like a light. The detailed circuit of the Relay Module is shown in the following image. It consists of a 5V Electromechanical Relay, an Optocoupler IC, transistor, two resistors and two diodes.

The main component of the project is IR Sensor and we have used two of them. The placement of the sensors is important as it will determine the functioning of the project.

Practically speaking, both the sensors must be placed on the either side of the door or entrance of the room. The sensor placed on the outside of the room is named as Sensor 1 and the sensor, which is placed on the inside is named Sensor 2.

When a person tries to enter the room, Sensor 1 detects the person first and then Sensor 2. This action will indicate the 8051 Microcontroller that the person is entering the room.

Hence, the microcontroller will turn on the light and also increments the visitor counter to 1. If there are more visitor, the microcontroller will keep the light turned on and increments the visitor counter accordingly.

When a person tries to leave the room, Sensor 2 detects the person first and then Sensor 1. This process will make the microcontroller to understand that a person is trying to leave the room and hence, it will decrement the count of visitors. The microcontroller will not turn off the light until the last person has left the room.

As the visitors start leaving the room, the visitor count will be decremented and when the last person leaves the room, the count be comes 0. During this point, the microcontroller understands that there is nobody in the room and turns OFF the light.

Caution: Be extremely cautious when using 230V mains supply.

Applications

  • Automatic Room Lighting with Bidirectional Visitor Counter can be used to automatically turn on the light in a room when a person enters the room and turn it off when the person leaves the room.
  • The project can also be dubbed as a Bidirectional Visitor Counter it is an integral part of the Automatic Room Lighting circuit.
  • The project can be modified with LEDs and as the number of persons in the room increases, the number of LEDs turning ON also increases.

As the sun sets over the horizon and your living room grows dim, it sure would be nice if your smart lights knew to turn themselves on. With a little magic, you can make your lights turn on as soon as the sun goes down.

For this, we’re going to use a service called IFTTT (If This Then That). If you haven’t used IFTTT before, check out our guide to getting started for info on how to create an account and connect apps. Then, come back here to create the necessary recipe.

This little trick uses the Weather Underground IFTTT channel to find out when the sun sets. You can then turn on any smart light that has an IFTTT channel, including Philips Hue , Belkin WeMo , or LIFX . For your convenience, we’ve created an applet using Philips Hue lights here , or you can follow the steps below to make it for yourself. You’ll need to connect the Weather Underground channel, as well as the channel for your preferred smart lights before you begin.

To get started, head to IFTTT’s home page and log in. Then, click your profile picture.

SmartThings is a Samsung application that allows you to manage your home appliances and other compatible electronic devices directly from your smartphone or tablet. You can monitor the status of connected devices when you’re away from home, set automatic programmes for each room and even share control permissions with other family members. The SmartThings application is available on Android and iOS devices.

Main features of SmartThings:

If SmartThings does not detect your device, return to search manually. Use the search bar, entering your device name or scan the QR code on your device.

Notifications can pop-up to allow access to your device (PIN code) or to download an add-on module. If so, accept so you can follow up with the connection and agree permissions and new module so you can use SmartThings in the best conditions.

If you don’t have a Wi-Fi connection, you can connect devices via Bluetooth. Swipe down from the top of the screen to reveal the Quick panel, select “Bluetooth”, then select your device. However, you will need a Wi-Fi connection to use the device you have just added to SmartThings.

To remove a device from SmartThings, select the product from the Menu or the section where it is registered, tapping on “Edit” and “Delete device”, confirming when pop-up appears. Only the user identified as “Owner” can delete devices.

You can organise devices by location, by position (home, office, etc.) or by room (kitchen, living room, etc.) and set up their operation.

To make sure that SmartThings works properly, you will be asked to give permission for the app to access certain functions on your device, for example:

  • Contacts: authorises access to contact information during data transfer
  • Camera: scans QR codes
  • Location: finds nearby devices via Bluetooth and BLE connection
  • Storage: allows the registration of plugins and the transfer of content
  • Microphone: allows the use of voice command
  • Telephone: allows the access to essential information, such as user location and update availability.

Please note: The required authorisation may vary depending on the country, device model and operating system that your smartphone is running (Android or iOS).

Infrared & Ultrasonic Detectors

Infrared or ultrasonic sensors turn lights off or on automatically, depending upon whether or not they sense the presence of someone in the room. These are made by several companies—Leviton, Lutron, and Enerlites, to name a few.

Infrared (PIR) switches are, by far, the most common type of motion sensors. They pick up minute changes in the infrared background of a room when a human is present. To buy these online, see Infrared Light Switches.

Ultrasonic switches are activated by inaudible sound waves that sense motion. In rooms that have only a little bit of human motion—such as executive offices, living rooms, or restrooms— very sensitive automatic controls may be needed to pick up the nuances of a person moving. Buying the Right Occupancy Switch

It’s important to buy occupancy or motion-sensing switches that are right for your lights or fixtures. All switches are rated according to the wattage they can control—add up the wattage of the light bulbs and fixtures a switch will control and then select a model that is rated accordingly.

Also be aware that switches are made to turn on lights from one place (a single-pole switch), two places such as both ends of a hallway (three-way switches), or three places (four-way switches). Most occupancy switches are single-pole.

Be sure to choose switches rated as three-way or four-way if you will be controlling lights from more than one place.

With a “manual-on” switch, you turn on the lights when entering a room and then, when you leave the area, the switch shuts off the lights after a preset period. The one shown at left senses movement in a 900-square-foot area; it’s just right for utility rooms, basements, closets, garages, and similar rooms.

If you’ll be controlling fluorescent lights, compact fluorescent bulbs, or low-voltage lights, you’ll need a occupancy switches that can handle these types. Some timers will work for lights but not for motors, such as bathroom fans; others are rated to work for both.

So what is this magical device of which I speak? It is called a Maestro Occupancy Sensor Switch by Lutron. You install the sensor switch and it automatically senses when you are in the room and turns the lights on for you. This is great in the laundry room or garage when your hands are full! If you forget to turn it off, it will sense when no one is in the room and turn off by itself. It won’t turn on automatically if there is enough daylight already in the room, so you’ll have to turn it on manually if you want it on. But it WILL turn itself off—so if your kids forget to turn off the lights in the bedroom, playroom, or bathroom Maestro has you covered.

I asked Matt which room he thought most needed a little help from the Lutron Maestro switch. I thought the boys’ bedroom, their closet, and their bathroom would all be ideal choices. He said, “Well, OUR bedroom, our closet, and our bathroom rank pretty high on the list as well!” Oops. Busted. I am guilty of running downstairs quickly for something with the intention of returning and then I get distracted and the lights stay on. I decided to install the switch in our master bedroom closet.

The only supplies I needed to install my switch were the Occupancy Sensor Switch (which include the wire nuts and switch plate screws), the directions, a screwdriver, and some pliers. My switches work on single pole switches which means that the light source is only controlled by one switch.

Step 1: TURN OFF YOUR POWER from the main source before you begin and double check to make sure there is no voltage coming into the switch you are working on. Confession: I sometimes just shut off the power to my entire house when doing anything electrical because I’m freaked out by the possibility of shocking myself.

Step 2: Unscrew the switch-plate and the switch from the wall.

Step 3: Examine how your current switch is wired. Many times the screws and wires will be different colors but my wires were all the same color.

The green screw is the ground wire. The switch will not work if the ground wire is not properly attached.

Step 3: Feel free to call Lutron if you have any questions on which wires need to be attached. I followed the current wiring of my switch to attach the Lutron Maestro switch.

Step 4: Attach your ground wires first. Bundle the wires and screw on a wire nut making sure that all of the wires are secure.

Step 5: Attach the other two wires.

Step 6: Replace the wires back into the wall.

Step 7: Secure the switch to the wall with the included screws.

Step 8: Snap on the switch plate cover and you are done!

Given the wide variety of smart home options available to the average consumer, integration among devices is becoming an essential feature. Many people opt for Alexa-enabled devices like Blink security cameras to provide automation with their setup. As a Blink user myself, I wanted to find out if Blink works with SmartThings.

Blink security cameras work with SmartThings with notable limitations. A web-based IFTTT configuration is usually required to sync the devices, further adding to the process’s complexity. There are some alternatives, however, should you decide to use SmartThings with your existing Blink system.

Though the process is more involved, it is still possible to use certain features on your Blink camera using SmartThings; this article will offer an in-depth look into how you can get started integrating your Blink devices with the hub.

SmartThings: A Quick Look

SmartThings is Samsung’s answer to the growing need for smart home automation. The interface can connect with a range of smart home devices (lighting, sensors, cameras, etc.). Once your devices are connected, you can use voice assistants like Google Home or Amazon Alexa. You can also configure and adjust your setting right from the SmartThings app (iOS and Android).

In addition to controlling your devices, you can also use SmartThings to schedule and automate your existing smart devices. Say you want your lights to come on in the evening at a specific time, or you want your bedroom lights to turn off automatically when you leave the room; SmartThings has you covered. You can even get notifications when a specific event occurs.

Managing Blink with SmartThings

There are a few requirements before you get set up with SmartThings and your Blink camera:

  • A SmartThingsSmart Home Hub: The Smart Home Hub will act as the “control center” for your system and allow the devices to connect and communicate.
  • A SmartThings Supported Device: In this case, a Blink camera. However, it is worth noting that SmartThings works with various smart devices, like locks, thermostats, speakers, and more). Your smart devices will be able to communicate with SmartThings via the Smart Home hub, providing additional customizability.
  • Smart Home Assistant or SmartThings app: SmartThings supports voice commands with smart home assistants like Google Home or Amazon Alexa. You can download the associated SmartThings app to control your system right from your mobile device.

Now that we have a better idea of what SmartThings can do, as well as some tips to get started controlling your devices, let’s take a closer look at how to use your Blink system with SmartThings and IFTTT.

Setting Up IFTTT with SmartThings

Though the process of setting up your Blink camera using IFTTT doesn’t require any coding, you’ll still need some technical know-how. With IFTTT integration, SmartThings can be used to arm and disarm your Blink security system. However, because of how the devices communicate, you’re only limited to those two functions.

Here’s a guide to get you started using Blink cameras with SmartThings via IFTTT web-services (Note: You will also need to create a virtual “switch” for the Blink Camera via the SmartThings app):

  1. Use IFTTT to connect Blink services with SmartThings (Ensure you have authorized your Blink Cameras).
  2. Create an Applet (Blink offers a helpful guide to creating applets for your devices on their support site here).
  3. Next, you’ll want to select “Switched On” (armed) or “Switched Off” (disarmed) within the IFTTT interface.
  4. Locate your Blink Camera’s virtual switch and create a new trigger.
  5. Once the trigger is created, select “+ that” and navigate to the Blink Camera you want to arm or disarm.
  6. Finally, add the Blink Camera switch to your list of “routines” in the SmartThings app.

The steps required may seem daunting at first, but Blink’s support forums offer plenty of helpful resources to get you started and help troubleshoot potential issues you may run into along the way.

  3. Tap Devices.

Please note: In order to connect a device to SmartThings:

  • The device must be connected to Wi-Fi.
  • You must have a Samsung account.

If SmartThings does not detect your device, return to search manually. Use the search bar, entering your device name or scan the QR code on your device.

Notifications can pop-up to allow access to your device (PIN code) or to download an add-on module. If so, accept so you can follow up with the connection and agree permissions and new module so you can use SmartThings in the best conditions.

If you don’t have a Wi-Fi connection, you can connect devices via Bluetooth. Swipe down from the top of the screen to reveal the Quick panel, select “Bluetooth”, then select your device. However, you will need a Wi-Fi connection to use the device you have just added to SmartThings.

To remove a device from SmartThings, select the product from the Menu or the section where it is registered, tapping on “Edit” and “Delete device”, confirming when pop-up appears. Only the user identified as “Owner” can delete devices.

You can organise devices by location, by position (home, office, etc.) or by room (kitchen, living room, etc.) and set up their operation.

To make sure that SmartThings works properly, you will be asked to give permission for the app to access certain functions on your device, for example:

  • Contacts: authorises access to contact information during data transfer
  • Camera: scans QR codes
  • Location: finds nearby devices via Bluetooth and BLE connection
  • Storage: allows the registration of plugins and the transfer of content
  • Microphone: allows the use of voice command
  • Telephone: allows the access to essential information, such as user location and update availability.
