Google Meet is the video-chat tool integrated into G Suite and available to anyone with a Google account. By default, you’ll see the most active speaker on video calls with a lot of people, but you can now get a Zoom-style grid of videos.

Once you’re in the Change Layout menu, you can select any of the available layout options and your screen will reflect the changes instantly in the background. The default setting is “Auto,” which will automatically change the layout based on the number of participants in the video call.

If you select “Tiled,” you can see up to 16 people at once in the order that they joined the call. Hover your mouse over any picture to see their name. This setting is disabled if someone is presenting, and the “Sidebar” option is used instead. If you select “Spotlight,” the current speaker, presenter, or pinned feed will fill the entire window.

Get the most out of Google Meet with these tips and tricks for the video chat service

How to view everyone at once in google meet

Google Meet is a very popular free-to-use video conferencing tool that replaces Google Hangouts. It’s proved to be a super valuable way to hold group or one-to-one video chats with stable clear video and audio without paying a cent.

As such, it’s ideal for schools where budget may be an issue but video interaction is needed to support the likes of Google Classroom. For example, educators can now create a unique Meet link and share it in the Classroom Stream or Classwork pages for students to easily access.

So here are the Google Meet tips and tricks you need to get the most out of the platform.

How to Use Google Meet Grid View

  • Options (three vertical dots) > Change Layout > Tiled

One of the commonly asked about features is Google Meet grid view, aka tile view. In this mode, multiple screens are displayed at once, allowing you to see everyone in the video chat at the same time. While this isn’t a feature made for the small screens of smartphones, it is an ideal option for larger laptop and desktop computer screens.

For teachers, this provides a good way to keep an eye on the entire class at once, and helpful for making sure everyone is present and paying attention.

This is also a nice way to keep an eye on certain students while remaining focused on the entire class. It offers a handy perspective of how students, and the class as a whole, are responding to your teaching.

This grid view is actually called “Tiled.” To enter that mode you need to click on the options button that is the three vertical dots, then select “Change Layout” before picking “Tiled.”

Mute Students in Google Meet

  • PC/MAC: On the person’s thumbnail select the three vertical dots > Mute
  • Mobile: People > Mute

As the teacher leading a Google Meet call with a class, it is possible to control the students’ privileges as your participants. One such option is to mute students. Options to pin and remove students are also available, but more on that below.

If you mute a student, they won’t be able to unmute themselves. They also won’t be heard by you or anyone else in the Google Meet video call. To do this on Mac or PC go to the person’s thumbnail image and within that window select options, which is the three vertical dots in the corner, then select “Mute.” On mobile, you need to tap the “People” tab then select the participant and select “Mute.”

To pin a participant, which keeps their video always in focus, select the participant’s thumbnail and the pin icon. This is a Mac- and PC-only option.

If you want to remove a student so they can no longer participate in the video or audio, this is an option, too. On Mac or PC select the back arrow icon, select the student, then select “Remove.” On a mobile you’ll need to tap the person’s name and then the remove button (–).

Share Your Screen in Google Meet

  • PC/Mac: Present Now > Entire Screen > Share
  • Mobile: Vertical dots icon > Present Screen > Screen Broadcast

If you want to give a presentation or perhaps show a resource to the whole class at once, screen sharing is a great option in Google Meet. A top tip here is to make sure beforehand you have any personal information or windows/tabs closed so when the screen does share, there is no chance of inadvertently showing more than you plan. Ideally, have the presentation or document open before following these next steps.

On Mac or PC, go to the bottom right of the screen and select the “Present Now” option. Then pick if you want to share “entire screen,” “a window,” or a “Chrome tab.” To confirm, you must then click “Share.” To end, you can select “Stop Presenting.”

On mobile, you can share by selecting the options button (three vertical dots), then “Present Screen.” Tap “Screen Broadcast” to confirm and begin. To end select “Stop Broadcast.”

Another really useful option is to join only to screen share. This means your students will only see the presentation and not you. No audio or video will be sent, but you are able to see what the class is doing during the presentation. For this, select “Start a Meeting” from meet.google.com, the enter a meeting code, click “Present,” select the window or app you’re presenting, then “Share.”

Keyboard Shortcuts for Google Meet

If you want to really command your Google Meet experience, it’s all about keyboard shortcuts. These allow you to quickly select options without the need to look for and manipulate the mouse – ideal when focused on the class.

  • Turn camera on and off: Cmd (Ctrl) + E
  • Mute and unmute your microphone: Cmd (Ctrl) + D
  • Announce who is currently speaking: Shift + Cmd (Ctrl) + Alt + A, then S
  • Announce current information about the room: Shift + Cmd (Ctrl) + Alt + A, then /

Google is playing catch-up.

The tech giant confirmed Thursday that it will belatedly offer a Zoom-style gallery view for one of its video-chat products later this month, but those hoping to add a little Brady Bunch flavor to their Google Hangouts should slow their roll. The new feature, reports Reuters, is only available on Google Meet.

For the blissfully unaware, Google Meet is entirely distinct from the widely used Google Hangouts. Importantly, the service is not free to everyone with a Google account like Hangouts. Rather, it is a paid enterprise service primarily aimed at businesses.

The least expensive G Suite tier that gets you access to Google Meet costs $6 per month, per user. The “most popular” version costs $12 per month, per person. In other words, you’re paying a premium for a feature that competitors like Zoom offer for free.

How to view everyone at once in google meet

Google Meet will support up to 16 people at once in gallery view, notes Reuters.

Notably, in response to the specific and unique demands the coronavirus has placed on school systems around the globe, Google announced that “advanced Google Meet video-conferencing capabilities” would be made available to all G Suite and G Suite for Education customers until Sept. 30 of this year.

As schools struggle to respond to incidents of zoombombing and various Zoom privacy concerns, the offer from Google may be a welcome one.

But let’s focus on you. If you absolutely must get a piece of this Google Meet gallery-view action but don’t feel like forking over the cash, Google does offer a free trial.

“Get started with a free 14-day trial of G Suite or contact sales,” the company encourages. “After the trial ends, you can pay by credit card, or depending on the location of your business, you may also pay by direct debit.”

Just remember to bail before those 14 days are up, or you’ll end up paying per email address.

Of course, if it’s just a gallery view you’re looking for, there’s no need to jump through all those hoops. Services like Jitsi Meet offer that very same thing, free of charge.

The time when the iPods were reserved only for games and music is behind us. Today, we can use iPads for work and education, and most people find them more convenient than a big laptop or a desktop computer. That’s especially true when it comes to online meetings and using apps such as Google Meet.

How to view everyone at once in google meet

However, we haven’t been able to use Google Meet in a grid mode on our iPads for a long time, but it’s possible now. In this article, we’ll explain to you how to show Google Meet grid view on your iPad.

Things You’ll Need

Although this may be the fastest option available, bear in mind that it’s not a one-click operation. That’s why we suggest that you take some time and go through this process, step by step.

You’ll have to download a recently created extension, Google Meet Grid View Extension, as well as Remote Desktop Extension. Here’s what you’ll need:

  1. Your iPad.
  2. The Remote Desktop app installed on your iPad.
  3. Desktop or Laptop.
  4. Google Remote Desktop Extension on your desktop or laptop.
  5. Google Meet account.
  6. Google Meet Grit View Extension on your desktop and iPad.
How to view everyone at once in google meet

First Steps

Since it’s not possible to use Grid view on Google Meet on your iPad, you’ll have to access your computer’s desktop from your iPad. We’re going to do that using Chrome Remote Desktop Extension.

Bear in mind that your laptop or computer has to be on all the time. Otherwise, the meeting could suddenly end. Keep both chargers for your laptop and your iPad handy.

If you haven’t used Remote Desktop before, it’s time to download it:

  1. Go to the App store.
  2. Download the Remote Desktop app.
  3. Create your Remote Access account.
  4. Turn on Screen Mirroring.

Also, you’ll have to download the Google Meet Grid View extension to your laptop and iPad. The extension is free, and it’s compatible with all devices.

Final Steps

Once you’ve prepared everything, it’s time to start the meeting. Again, we encourage you to try this out before the conference call. If you have an important meeting with multiple participants, you can try it out with a friend beforehand, just to make sure everything works smoothly.

Here’s what you have to do:

  1. Connect your devices using the Remote Desktop app.
  2. Open Google Meet on your desktop or laptop.
  3. Start or join a meeting.
  4. Click on Grid View sign, at the bottom of the screen.

You should now see other participants in a grid mode. If everything looks good, it’s time to switch from your desktop to your iPad and enjoy a high-quality meeting.

Google Meet Grid View Extension

Google Meet is an excellent app for conference calls and all kinds of meetings, but it lacks one thing – a grid view. Grid view is beneficial for people who work in large teams.

It’s also beneficial for teachers and students because they can see all participants. It just makes you feel as if you were all in the same classroom.

Google Meet Grid View Extension allows the users to see more than 50 participants, without losing the quality of the call.

Make sure to explore all of the options that can improve the quality of your meeting. For example, you can hide participants who have their video turned off, so their images won’t distract you. There’s also an option to highlight the person who is speaking, which makes it easier to focus and follow the meeting.

It’s Worth It!

Some people may be put off by the somewhat long installation process. However, we assure you it’s simpler than it looks, and you’d be glad you did it. In the long run, benefits are enormous as you can enjoy high-quality meetings from the comfort of your couch.

What device do you usually use for Google Meet? Do you have any other tips or tricks when it comes to this tool? Let us know in the comments section below.

In the age of remote work, Google Meet, the teleconferencing tool from Google, offers businesses and teams a reliable option outside of industry leader Zoom .

Among its many features, Google Meet gives you the ability to virtually share your screen with other people in the meeting. This way, your team members can see the documents, presentations, spreadsheets, or webpages you’re looking at for easier collaboration.

If you’re using Google Meet on a computer, you can share your entire screen or a specific window or tab. On a mobile device, you can only share your entire screen. Here’s how to do it all.

How to share your screen in Google Meet using a computer

2. In the toolbar of icons at the bottom-center of your screen, click the icon for Present now, which looks like a square with an arrow inside.

3. In the pop-up menu, select whether you want to share Your entire screen, A window, or A tab.

4. Select the area of your screen you wish to share in the window that pops up.

5. Click Share.

6. To stop presenting, choose either Stop presenting in the top-right corner of the screen or Stop in the top-left.

How to share your screen in Google Meet using a mobile device

1. Join the Google Meeting. You can access the meeting from the Google Calendar app, from the Google Meet app, or from the Meet tab of the Gmail app.

2. In the bottom-right corner of the video screen, tap the icon of three vertical dots.

3. In the pop-up menu, select Share screen.

4. Tap Start Broadcast in the pop-up.

Note: Everything on your screen will be shared to the Meeting, including notifications. To prevent everyone from seeing any notifications that may appear on your screen, put your device on Do Not Disturb mode.

5. Your screen should now be visible to the other members of the meeting, and you can proceed with your presentation.

6. To stop presenting, tap Stop sharing in the center of your screen, or tap the icon of three vertical dots and select Stop sharing in the pop-up.

When using Google Meet and you want to share your screen it is pretty common to say “Can you guys see my screen?” How do you know you are presenting and what you are presenting without using a Chrome extension? How can you see BOTH the presentation and the participants at the same time?

Share Your Screen

To share your screen in Google Meet click on “Present Now” in the bottom right.

Your Presentation

After choosing to present part or all of your screen, notice in the upper right that it is showing a very small thumbnail of your screen share.

Pin Your Presentation

Hover over the tiny screen presentation and click on the Pin icon to “Pin to screen.” This will confirm to you that you are screen sharing and what you are sharing.

Lose Participants

Unfortunately, pinning your screen to see what you are presenting will lose your ability to see who is participating in the Meet. Unless….

Duplicate the Meet Tab

While in the Google Meet, right click on the Chrome tab and choose “Duplicate.” This will have you in the Meet TWICE!

How to view everyone at once in google meet

Use the 2nd Tab

On the 2nd Tab you are not the presenter but rather just another participant. You can see the presentation AND the participants on that tab. No pinning of the presentation required. Tip: Mute your mic and turn off the camera on the 2nd tab.
