How to take a Live Photo

  1. Open the Camera app.
  2. Make sure that your Camera is set to photo mode and that Live Photos is turned on. When it’s on, you see the Live Photo button at the top of your Camera.

the point is to lift the arm and the Live Photo to animate, just like on every Apple Watch from 1 to 4.

On the Apple Watch 5, when the always on display is enabled this feature stops working.

If you disable the screen always on feature, the Live Photo animates when you lift your arm.

is there any way for this to be fixed? Any workaround?

How to view live photos on the apple watch

Much has been made of Apple’s new Live Photos feature and with good reason, it’s really cool and a great way to preserve special memories. If you own an Apple Watch, you can view Live Photos and even turn them into watch faces.

In order to view Live Photos on your Apple Watch, you first have to sync photos to it. We explain how to do that in great detail, but for the purposes of this article, we want to show you how to cut to the chase.

Viewing Live Photos on Your Apple Watch

What you will probably want to do is add some of your preferred Live Photos to your Favorites. This guarantees that they’re easy to find and you will be able to quickly view them and turn them into watch faces.

How to view live photos on the apple watchDo yourself a favor and favorite the Live Photos you want to view on your Watch. That way you won’t be spending tons of time looking through your photos hunting for them.

Next, open up the Watch app on your iPhone and check to make sure the Photo Syncing shared album is set to “Favorites”. Obviously, you could always create a special album with only Live Photos but for our purposes, this will work the best.

How to view live photos on the apple watchSince we’ve already gone through and added our Live Photos to Favorites, we can just leave the synced album on our Watch as the default (Favorites).

With this step out of the way, we can now turn to our Watch and view our Live Photos on it. To do so, open the Photos app on your Watch.

How to view live photos on the apple watch

With the Photos app open, you can go through and look at everything in your synced folder, which is our Favorites and thus contains all our desired Live Photos.

How to view live photos on the apple watchYou can tell when something is a Live Photo because you will see the icon in the lower-right corner.

To view a particular Live Photo on your Apple Watch, simply place your fingertip on the watch face and the photo will play after a very short delay.

Creating a Watch Face from a Live Photo

To quickly turn a Live Photo into a Watch face, press and hold your fingertip on it until it shows you the “Create Watch Face” screen.

How to view live photos on the apple watch

Tap the “Create Watch Face” screen and your Live Photo will be transformed into a new watch face.

How to view live photos on the apple watchNote, you can drag the Live Photo left and right until you get it just the way you want.

The other method of creating a Live Photo watch face is to press and hold your current watch face until it lets you pick a new watch face. Swipe right until you get to the “New” screen.

How to view live photos on the apple watch

Now flick up until you can choose the “Photo” option. Tap again to set it as your new watch face.

How to view live photos on the apple watch

If it isn’t oriented the way you want, press and hold the watch face again until you see the “Customize” option. Press the “Customize” button and you will be able to move the photo left or right until you get it just the way you want it.

How to view live photos on the apple watch

Once you have your Live Photo watch face set up the way you want it, whenever you look at your Watch to see the time, it will animate. You don’t need to interact with it at all to get it to do this, it will just come to life whenever you want to check the time.

If you want to learn more about how to take great Live Photos, then you should check out our article on this very topic. On the other hand, if you want to learn about how to quickly share Live Photos with other non-Apple users such as on Facebook or Instagram, we’ve got you covered there as well.

Hopefully you found this article useful. If you have any questions or comments you would like to add, please leave your feedback in our discussion forum.

Apple introduced Live Photos feature with iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus, and the feature is present in the latest iPhones as well. The Live Photos feature, as you know, is a mixture of movie and still image. That is, a Live Photo is neither a photo nor a video.

When you capture a Live Photo on your iPhone, the iOS creates a MOV file as well as a JPEG file.

If you’re running Windows 10, Windows 8.1, or Windows 7 and want to view Live Photos on your PC, you have a couple of options.

You need to either play the MOV video file using a media player, convert Live Photos to GIF images first on your iPhone and transfer them to your PC to view them, or transfer Live Photos to your PC and then convert to GIF to view Live Photos on your Windows 10 PC before viewing them.

For those who are wondering, a GIF image will look similar to a Live Photo, but the clarity of the picture might not be as good as the original Live Photo.

The following are the four ways to view Apple iPhone’s Live Photos on Windows 10 and earlier versions of Windows.

View iPhone Live Photos on Windows 10 without additional software

As said before, the iPhone creates a MOV file as well as a JPEG image when you capture a Live Photo. The easiest way to view your Live Photos on your Windows 10 PC is to transfer these MOV files (connect your iPhone to PC > open File Explorer > iPhone > Internet storage > DCIM) to your PC and then double-click on a video file to play it using the default Films & TV app. We recommend using a video player that automatically plays all the videos in a folder (GOM player does this best) to quickly play all MOV files.

Convert Live Photos to GIF on iPhone to view them on Windows 10

There are dozens of apps out there to help convert Live Photos to GIF images. The only problem with these GIF converting apps on iPhone is that most of them are either paid or support a limited number of photos at a time. And very few free apps that support unlimited Live Photos add a watermark while converting a Live Photo to GIF. We tried Lively app, but with default settings, the image quality of GIF was not up to the mark, as you can see in the picture below.

How to view live photos on the apple watch

So we suggest you search the store and install either a paid or free app depending on your needs.

After converting Live Photos to GIF files, transfer them to your Windows 10 PC to view them in the default Photos app or Windows Photo Viewer.

Convert Live Photos to GIF on Windows 10/8/7 to view them

Quite a few free utilities are around to convert videos to GIF files. Any GIF Animator, Free Video to GIF Converter, and Freemore Video to GIF Converter are some of the popular programs in this space. We used Any GIF Animator to convert Live Photos to GIF and were quite happy with the end result.

How to view live photos on the apple watch

Like most other programs, Any GIF Converter also allows you to select frame rate, GIF size (in pixels), and dither method. We suggest you play with these settings to get the best quality and size GIFs to view on your PC.

Convert Live Photos to GIF online to view them on Windows 10

Those of you who want to view iPhone Live Photos on Windows 10 PC without installing any additional program can use an online converter to convert Live Photos to GIF. Like programs, a bunch of free video to GIF converter services available. We used Make A Gif web service to convert one of our Live Photos to GIF.

Try restarting both your iPhone and your watch. Turn both devices off first, then restart your iPhone before restarting your watch:

– To turn your watch off: press and hold the side button until you see the Power Off slider; drag the slider to turn off.

– To turn it back on: press and hold the side button until you see the Apple logo.

Also ensure that you are allowing sufficient time for the Live Photos to finish syncing before viewing them.

It is not presently possible to add complications to the Photo watch face – the only customisable feature is the photo itself. If you would like Apple to consider adding this feature, you can suggest that here (all submissions are read, but you should not expect to receive a reply):

The Apple Watch may have a small screen, but it’s still large enough to show off those pictures of your little one’s dance recital to the grandparents. As long as you’ve got an album synced from your iPhone, you can even view pictures while your smartphone is out of range.

How to view live photos on the apple watch
To help you get the most out of your photo viewing experience, we’ve put together this tutorial to explain how to set up and customize the Photos app on Apple Watch

Create an Album in Photos on iPhone

The first step to getting the most important pictures on your Apple Watch is to create an album for it in your Photos app on iPhone.

  1. Open the Photos app on the iPhone and select “Albums.” Then tap the add icon (+) to create a new one.
  2. Name the new album. For simplicity, I named mine Apple Watch Photos.
  3. Select the photos you wish to add to the album and select done.

How to view live photos on the apple watch

Sync an Album to Apple Watch

  1. Open the Apple Watch app on your iPhone and navigate to My Watch.
  2. Scroll down and select the Photos app from the list.
  3. Tap Synced Album. Then select your newly created Apple Watch album.
  4. Photos will automatically sync with your Apple Watch and be available to view, even when your iPhone is out of range.

You can also select a preexisting album instead. You might prefer the immediacy of syncing with your Camera Roll or Photo Stream for currently added pictures instead. The Apple Watch Photos app is defaulted to your Favorites album.

Manage Photo Storage

You can customize how many photos you want synced to your Apple Watch for more control over how much room they take up. Select from 25 to 500 photos or five to 75 MB of storage space.

How to view live photos on the apple watch

Use Photos App to View a Synced Album

How to view live photos on the apple watchOnce you’ve synced an album to Apple Watch, view the pictures on your wrist via the Photos app. When you open it, the first screen will be a collage of all pictures in your album. Rotate the Digital Crown to zoom in.

Tap a picture to view it full screen. Use the Digital Crown to zoom in closer. Drag your finger on the screen to pan. Double Tap to fill the screen. Double-tap again to see the full picture. You can browse your album by swiping to the left or right to switch between photos.

Now that you know how to set up and customize your Photos app on Apple Watch, showing off important moments in your life will be simple.

When Apple updates watchOS to version 2 later this year, we will also be able to view videos from within the Photos app and use single photos or photo albums as backgrounds for watch faces.
