  • Picasa

Did You Know

The first Amazon Kindle was released on November 19, 2007.

(Pocket-lint) – Google-owned Picasa will be no more after this spring.

The photo service was acquired by Google around 12 years ago and has long included native apps for Windows and Mac OS X as well as an integrated web app. However, Picasa and its companion Picasa Web Albums service started to be discontinued in March and saw the final stage of the rollout happen on the 1 May as part of Google’s effort to focus on Google Photos, a smart and feature-rich photo-sharing/storage service that was spun out from Google+ last year.

If you’re a Picasa diehard, have no fear. Google has outlined what you can do with your photos and videos prior to Picasa shutting down. And we’ve laid out all that information below and more, with the purpose of making this abrupt transition a little easier on you.

Picasa: What is Picasa and Picasa Web Albums?

Picasa is an app that you install on your computer to let you edit and organise your photos and videos on Windows and Mac OS X computers- all while preserving your original media. It also lets you upload pictures to photos.google.com. Meanwhile, Picasa Web Albums is a website where you upload and share photos and videos, and you can see the same media in your Google Photos account.

You can read more about both services from Google’s support page.

Picasa: What is Google Photos?

Google Photos is a mobile app for Android or iOS smartphones. It’s also a website. Both versions let you upload photos and videos from your device, then edit them, and share them with friends. There is also automatic tagging, auto-enhancing, and an animation creator, among other intelligent features. You can read more about Google Photos via Pocket-lint’s in-depth review or this official Help hub for Google Photos.

Picasa: Why is Picasa shutting down?

In a blog post, Google gave the following explanation:

“Since the launch of Google Photos, we’ve had a lot of questions around what this means for the future of Picasa. After much thought and consideration, we’ve decided to retire Picasa over the coming months in order to focus entirely on a single photo service in Google Photos. We believe we can create a much better experience by focusing on one service that provides more functionality and works across mobile and desktop, rather than divide our efforts across two different products.”

Picasa: When is Picasa shutting down?

  • Picasa – As of 15 March 2016, Google stopped supporting the Picasa desktop app. It will continue to work as it currently does; but Google won’t develop it any further, and there will be no future updates.
  • Picasa Web Albums – Google has created a new place for you to access your Picasa Web Albums data and will start rolling out these changes on 1 May 2016. There’s no word yet on what that “new place” is or how it’ll work.

Picasa: What’s happening to your photos and videos?

  • Picasa – Google recommended switching to Google Photos, so you can continue to upload photos and videos using the desktop uploader at photos.google.com/apps. The company will continue to update users along the way, but it emphasised that Google Photos is a “new and smarter product, that offers a better platform for us to build amazing experiences and features”.
  • Picasa Web Albums – Google said if you simply “log in” to Google Photos, all your photos and videos from Picasa Web Albums will be there, and you will be able to access, modify, and share most of that content. If don’t want to use Google Photos, Google plans to create a new place for you to access your data, allowing you to view, download, or delete your Picasa Web Albums. You just won’t be able to create, organise, or edit albums from this new place, so using Google Photos is probably your best best.

Want to know more?

Google said it plans to take some time in order to “do this right and provide you with options and easy ways to access your content”. Check out Google’s blog post for more details.

I have used Picasa 3 for a decade +. Recently I’m unable to import from my iphone 7. I get this message ” An error has occurred while attempting to import. Either the source is unavailable or the destination is full or read only”. Can you help with this problem?

Like this:

First question – are you using a Mac? If so, and you updated your Mac to the latest OS – Picasa no longer works at all.

If not, and you’re using a Windows computer, do you have plenty of space on your hard drive? If it’s getting full, you will get that error message.

Like this:

I’m using a PC. And I have plenty of space on my hard drive. While I can rebuild the data base (as suggested in Plan B of the above “error using import” method – this move terrifies me! It feel way beyond my capacity! So unless you have another idea? I guess I have to more on to a more approachable Plan B?

Like this:

Yeah – I think your best bet is to learn how to import your photos manually to your computer.

  1. Connect the camera or insert the camera card to computer
  2. Ignore any automatic options to import photos with Picasa or anything else, just open your file explorer, This PC, and find the camera card and open it
  3. Copy all photos from camera
  4. Navigate to the Pictures folder and create a subfolder for the newly copied photos
  5. Paste all photos from camera into that subfolder

I don’t know how familiar you are with this process. If you just need some refreshers, these videos may help. If you haven’t done this at all, you may need to get a person to help you the first time, but this is a very important skill to have with your computer.

Once you have the photos on your computer’s hard drive in a subfolder of the Pictures folder, they should just show up in Picasa. If not, then review this video:

I hope this works for you, but I also highly recommend that you move away from Picasa. It was retired in 2015 and, one of these days it will stop working all together. We recommend moving to Google Photos. Or, if you’re on Windows 10, the Photos program that comes with it is pretty good too.

Here is our 45 minute YouTube show where we discuss moving from Picasa to Google Photos.

If you use Picasa Web, Google’s photo sharing service, you can now edit your photos within Picasa including cropping, resizing, red eye correction and more thanks to integration with Picknik, the search giant’s cloud-based photo editing tool. Google on Tuesday announced that Picnik photo editing capabilities will now be accessible to Picasa Web users in the United States and many other countries around the world. The new functionality will roll out to most Picasa Web users in the coming days. This is the first major integration between Picasa and Picnik since Google acquired the photo editing site in March.

Picniking in Picasa

To edit your photos, just open up Picasa, select the photo you want to fix, and then from the “Edit” drop down menu on the right select “Edit in Picnik.” This will bring up the Picnik interface in the same Web page you have open, and give you access to Picnik’s basic editing tools. You can return to the regular Picasa interface at any time by clicking “Back to Picasa Web Albums” in the upper right corner of your screen. (Click images to enlarge)

Once you’ve opened up the Picnik editing tools, you can adjust your photo or add novelty items including text, frames and virtual stickers such as fake mustaches, birthday cakes and sports equipment. After you’ve finished editing your photo, just press “Save to album” and you will be given the option to replace your old file or save a copy of your newly edited photo.

Premium Features

Picasa users can also get access to Picnik’s premium features for a monthly fee; premium features include access to a larger selection of novelty items and effects, as well as layering and other advanced photo editing features. If you’re already a premium Picnik user you will automatically be able to access your premium Picnik features when using Picasa Web albums. Picnik’s premium service starts at $5 a month or you can pay $25 for yearly access.

Picnik is not going away

If you use Picnik, but are not a Googe user the new Picnik-Picasa integration will not affect your service. You will still be able to edit photos in Picnik and use the site’s distribution tools to send your images to photo sharing sites around the Web including Facebook, Flickr, MySpace and Photobucket. Google users will not be able to take advantage of Picnik’s photo distribution features directly in Picasa. For that functionality you will need to upload your photo to Picnik.com.

Picasa integration with Picnik is just the first of many planned integrations between Picnik and Picasa. In a brief discussion with Jonathan Sposato, Google’s photo products manager and former Picnik CEO, Sposato said to “stay tuned for greater and greater integration” between Picnik, Picasa Web and Google’s desktop photo editing software, Picasa desktop.
