But achieving it is not always easy.

It is how you unfold your potentials and find your happiness.

Self realization: Definition​

In the vernacular, self realization is usually understood as the realization of one’s wishes and life goals.

This aspect is part of it, but the actual meaning goes beyond that:

it is about exploiting the potential, living out abilities and passions, and developing the personality, independently and individually.

There are many examples of self realization.

It can take place in the professional or private sphere, can manifest itself in relationships, hobbies, or projects.

Ideally, one finds fulfillment in every area of life and can realize oneself everywhere in the way one would like to.

Why is self realization so important in 2020?

People who lead their lives the way they like it often have particularly attractive qualities – for themselves and others alike.

They are usually friendly and empathetic, resting in themselves and seldom getting annoyed with trivialities.

Instead of getting upset, they look for sensible solutions and often find them.

They can recognize their strengths, accept their weaknesses, and admit mistakes.

At the same time, they like to work on themselves to develop themselves further.

Since they are satisfied with themselves, they are also less susceptible to trends and do not need to show off in front of others.

The life task they follow and identify with gives them a goal and a good feeling.

Self realization, therefore, helps them to lead a happy and self-determined life, to stand up for their desires, and in doing so to strengthen their self-esteem and find harmony.

It gives life a direction – and that feels good.

Is self realization selfish?​

The accusation that it is selfish to live out one’s self is a persistent one.

One thinks of people who ruthlessly carry out their projects and harm others in the process.

But that has little to do with genuine self realization.

On the contrary: Those who use their full potential are often very helpful and consider others and automatically increase their self-confidence.

For example, many people find part of their happiness in taking on voluntary positions.

But even if this is not your fulfillment, you do your environment right by developing your personality.

It will make you happier, more balanced, and more cheerful and will give you enough strength to be there for your fellow human beings and enrich their lives.

It is only essential that you do not realize yourself at the expense of others.

Self realization in your job​

Nowadays, for many people, a high salary comes second: work should earn enough money to pay rent and holidays, but at the same time it should make sense and make people happy.

Finding such a job can be difficult. As a result, many people are dissatisfied with their work and feel under- or over-challenged.

It is often because their own needs are not met.

A job offers the opportunity to realize oneself when

  • he generally enjoys
  • one can pursue one’s calling
  • you can live out your passions
  • you can use your talents and strengths
  • you have the feeling that you are doing something meaningful with your work
  • you can develop personally

Above all, self-fulfillment at work is possible if you see work as a process that goes on and on.

Once you have reached a particular position that you have been working towards, a feeling of emptiness can arise – if the situation does not bring the hoped-for satisfaction.

So remember: the path is the goal, even on the job.

A fulfilling working life can consist of continually experiencing new things, realizing new projects, and envisaging plans – not necessarily in achieving a specific goal.

The pyramid of needs after Abraham Maslow​

At the lowest level are basic needs such as food, sleep, and a roof over one’s head.

To be able to live, they have to live fulfilled, which is why they take up the most space.

On the second level, there is security.

Level three is interpersonal relationships.

Since we humans are social beings, we want to feel a sense of belonging, to experience love and friendship, and to be able to exchange ideas with others.

Level four contains the need for recognition.

Only at the very top, at level 5, is self realization.

It is also a human need, but not everyone has the opportunity to devote themselves to it.

If there is still a need on the levels below, it often comes first.

Nevertheless, one can already have the wish to reach level 5 finally.

Self-Realization means to realize really ‘who am I?’
Really, ‘I am a Pure Soul.’ But all along, I have believed that, ‘I am Claudet (you may insert your own name here)’ And from this wrong belief, various other wrong beliefs have emerged.

However, one day, as I happen to meet Gnani in person, and from Him I seek Self-Realization, with His divine grace, He changes my wrong belief (mithya darshan) to right belief (samyak darshan). And thus I attain Self-Realization!

How does attaining Self-Realization lead into a merrier life?
Before Self-Realization,
Suppose I am living a very happy and merry life!
But suddenly someone comes and insults me. I feel insulted and believe that, ‘I am suffering because this person insulted me.’

After I attain Self-Realization,
In the event of someone insulting me, Gnani teaches me to analyze, ‘Who am I and whose insult is happening? Who is the other person and who is insulting?’

Hence, I now understand that, ‘I am a Pure Soul, and it is Claudet that is insulted, not me!’
I also understand that ‘The other person too is really a Pure Soul and it is Chandubhai (the name of the other person) who is insulting, not him.”

And why did Chandubhai insult Claudet.
Param Pujya Dadashri, giving an example where, suppose Claudet’s spouse has insulted Claudet (please insert your own name here), explains, “When your husband insults you, you should remember that, ‘This is the unfolding of my own karma and my husband is a nimit (instrumental in the process), he is not at fault. When my unfolding karma alters, my husband says, ‘Please come, please come.’’ Therefore, let equanimity prevail in the mind and bring about a solution.

If you feel in your mind that, ‘When it is not my fault, why did he say that to me?’ then you will end up staying awake for three hours at night, and you will eventually get exhausted and fall asleep.”

Thus, it’s our attachment with Claudet that is the cause of our suffering. And Self-Realization separates us from Claudet. When there is separation, it allows equanimity to prevail! Anyone can remain merry in favourable circumstances. But by attaining Self-Realization life becomes merrier because we now know how to remain merry in both favourable and unfavourable circumstances.

In this video, Pujya Deepakbhai explains how is Soul attached or involved with the body? He says:
“By wrong belief! By wrong belief, you feel oneness with Claudet, with her mind, thoughts, intellect,
speech and behavior of Claudet. Whenever Claudet takes decision, you feel, ‘I am taking a decision’.

Someone insults Claudet, you feel, ‘I am suffering the insult’. Your belief is wrong. Due to that wrong belief, you are totally involved in Claudet. Now, by Gnan Vidhi (attaining Self-Realization), with the grace of Dada Bhagwan, we are changing the wrong belief to the right one.
By right belief, you get separated from Claudet. This is the beginning of the experience of the Pure Soul; say 1 degree of experience; and you have to reach upto 100 degrees. Slowly, as you practice the principles given by Gnani, your awareness will go on increasing and you will get more and more experience of the Pure Soul.

One thing we must understand: Experience of the Pure Soul is not like we will see some light, some vibrations, and happiness, etc. That is not the real experience! Experience of the Pure Soul means you can feel separation with Claudet. And therefore you can see the faults of Claudet more clearly. Sometimes Claudet may get angry with somebody. You can watch, “Oh this is with Claudet. She has become angry at somebody. This is wrong.”

So when you find the mistakes of Claudet, at that time it means you are in Pure Soul. And with the help of the flawless vision that you get when you attain Self-Realization, you can see that everyone is innocent. The root cause of mistake is with Claudet only. Claudet had made some mistake. That’s why she is suffering from that mistake. The other person is just one of the evidence for giving the result of our mistake. Once you see Claudet’s mistake, only then you will be in Pure Soul. So, for remaining in Pure Soul, you just have to observe mistakes of Claudet.

Really speaking, by the vision of Gnani, the Pure Soul is always separate from mind, speech and body, intellect, ego everything. Really both elements are always separate. Just like oil and water, They never mix with each other. The properties of both elements are such that they are in immiscible form. Here also, the Pure Soul and the matter – both these elements are totally separate and they are not really mixed with each other. But by wrong belief, you feel that I am suffering, I am doing, and I am involved. There remains oneness with Claudet. But it is by wrong belief only.

There are 4 types of wrong beliefs:
1.I am Claudet.
2.This is my body. So with ‘my’ i.e. the possessiveness, you are attaching with Claudet
3.I am a doer. I am making food, doing a job. So again you are joining with Claudet.
4.I am sufferer. Then also you become one with Claudet.
So by right belief you can remain separate from Claudet. Whatever suffering comes, you have to understand, it is by understanding only that, ‘whatever suffering comes, it is with Claudet, and not with me.’ Because ‘you’ are really separate from Claudet. It is in Gnanvidhi that you get this knowledge – ‘Who am I really?’ And slowly, slowly, as you practice more and more, you can have more and more separation with Claudet.”

What is Self Realization? How can we achieve this state of Being for ourself?

Self Realization is a term that is becoming increasingly more widely used. In many ways it is an obscure term, and its meaning is not immediately apparent. For many it is a term that means the same as ‘Enlightenment’ – a word which is similarly something difficult to determine. However the term ‘Self Realization’ is more useful as it actually refers to a very specific stage in the journey of awakening that Ramana Maharshi and others described.

Self Realization is a level of consciousness that anyone can reach. It is a very important level in the spiritual journey for when one becomes Self Realized the heart is now permanently open in the way that it was always meant to be.

Journey of Awakening

The spiritual journey is essentially the gradual process of the expansion of and lightening up of, the entire Being. The journey of awakening usually commences with an energetic force that begins its path of ascent by following up along the path of the spine. This energetic channel is called the Sushumna in Hindu thought. This is simply a channel or pathway of light that sits slightly in front of the spine. Spiritual awakening is the process of this channel being activated, and subtle energy flowing through it.

During the awakening process various states of Samadhi ensue. This is a term which simply means expanded states of consciousness. They can be very powerful and deeply engrossing. During a Samadhi state one can loose track of time, space, and everything else!

As the subtle energetic force within grows stronger, it travels along from the base of the spine and up to the crown. This is a ‘Crown Chakra’ opening. As it moves up, it lights everything up. This is the subtle energetic body coming back ‘on-line’. The energetic force continues beyond the crown to its peak, which is about a foot above the top of the head. After this ‘Star Chakra’ opens, the energetic pathway then finally loops back down and comes to rest in its natural abode of the Heart. ​

How to attain self realization

Self Realization is When the Heart Permanently Opens

When everything comes to its natural resting place in the heart, there is now an energetic opening in the heart area. This is what Self Realization is.

The Heart is the only thing that really matters in the spiritual process.

The opening in the heart allows for pure light, and pure presence to flood through. Those who are Self Realized embody this light and presence to a greater degree.

Quite simply, those who are Self Realized no longer have anything that energetically blocks this Divine Light and Presence.

What Occurs During Self Realization

Ramana Maharshi, Papaji and other sages have written about Self Realization and what occurs during this important stage. My experience of Self Realization corresponds exactly to what they have written.

The first stage of Self Realization is when one hears a voice crying repeatedly in what sounds like pure terror: “I’m dying, I’m dying!” Naturally, there is a sudden fear that one really might be about to die. Slowly, this voice gets swept into a black energetic vortex that opens up in the centre of the chest. The vortex seems so deep that it feels as though it stretches behind for miles and miles. Once the voice has finally disappeared into this vortex there is a pause where You assess that actually You are still here!

After a moment, a soft light begins to appear on the right side of the chest. Within this soft light is a white, lily-like flower with the bud still closed. The bud slowly lifts its head, and then blooms.

Death of the Ego, or the ‘I thought’

During Self Realization the voice that initally kept crying out “I’m dying, I’m dying”, has been called ‘The Ego’. This so-called false self, dissolves back into nothingness. Ramana Maharshi named this voice the ‘I thought’.

However to add to this description, energetically this voice is actually a part of the Being that holds onto things purely for the sake of holding on. It grips on so tightly and with such downward pressure that it keeps the naturally expansive and light-filled self from truly relaxing and lightening up. Once this energetic force dissolves, the Being is finally able to sit more comfortably within itself. From then on one’s essential nature can spread out, expand, and be at ease.

How to attain self realization

After Self Realization

Many believe that Self Realization is the final stage of awakening. However there are many more shifts of consciousness that take place after Self Realization.

After Self Realization has occurred, we are then able to move into what some call the Fifth Dimension.

And many stages after entering the Fifth Dimension, we move through the Gateway of Oneness – an extremely important and difficult stage. After the ‘Gateway of Oneness’ we finally move into complete Oneness.

How Do We Become Self Realized

So how do we achieve Self Realization? For myself, what helped the most was to Process Emotions. Processing emotions involved being very honest about all that was going on within, and where I was at. Things that one would normally repress, or shun were fully honoured and listened to. Anything that required attention was simply ‘sat with’, without judgement or expectation. As all of the old repressed emotions were truly felt and honoured, more expansive states of consciousness simply unfolded naturally.

The more that one sheds light and simple loving attention, on all the old blocks, misunderstandings, and compressed emotions that are present within, the more that one naturally lightens up. The more one lightens up, the more that all these mystic processes and subtle shifts simply occur for you. The lighter you are the more that you embody all that you are really meant to Be.

Liberation is freedom from all suffering: mental, physical, and from external circumstances. The one that is bound and therefore suffers from bondage, is the one that seeks liberation. This one is the ego. This ego is released through liberation. The true, eternal Self (pure Soul, atma) itself is the state of liberation.

Ego is bound by ignorance. When ignorance is removed, the ego is liberated. When you attain the Real knowledge (Gnan) through Gnan vidhi (ceremony of Self-Realization) from the Gnani Purush, ignorance will be lifted and the ego will be liberated.

Akram Vignan is the quick elevator path to Self Realization, in which Self Realization can be attained in one hour versus the longer kramic path to Self Realization.

One only needs to understand this world as it is and after that one do not even have to memorize anything. Understand it just once. How has it come into existence? Who is God? Who is running this world? What all this is about. What is our Real form? Knowing the answers to all these, the puzzles will be solved forever.

Akram Vignan is the Science which draws an exact line of demarcation between that which is You and that which is not yours; the Real and the relative. It clearly defines their properties and characteristics.

As a result of this exact demarcation, the result is immediate and experiential. In the Kramic marg, this line of demarcation is not clearly defined, and therefore, it is very difficult to reach the goal. Once this distinction is made, the Real will never be relative and the relative will never become Real. Unless they are separated, they cannot stay within their own natures.

The worldly life means to go away from your Real nature. Liberation means to come to your Real nature. Self Realization awakens you to your real, eternal Self.

During Gnan Vidhi, the Gnani severs the ropes of ignorance that have kept you bound for infinite lives. You will then immediately realize that you are free. You should experience the awareness that your true Self is absolutely free.

Before we begin to discuss this powerful technique to attain self realization, we need to understand what is keeping us from self realization. We have to realize what we are constantly doing that separates us more and more from our own experience of oneness.

As thoughts arise, we identify with them. With every thought we think, we say “this is me.” And our attention is constantly identified with this “me;” my frustrations, my needs, my finances, my fears, my opinions. And with everything thought we identify with as “me” we enable this sense of “me,” we empower the ego; we empower this sense of separation. And it is this separation that is the misery that causes conflict and keeps us from self realization.

Even when we try to attain self realization, we tend to do so from this sense of “me,” which is what is keeping us from self realization in the first place. We can end up unconsciously identifying with spiritual concepts and this again just empowers the ego. This “me” has just become identified with being a spiritual me. And whether we identify ourselves with being spiritual or unspiritual or even being enlightened, we are still imprisoned by the ego and this is what keeps us feeling separate and in conflict with everything around us.

Even with many valid spiritual practices, the mind finds a way to make it about the ego. I recently taught the meditation technique of witnessing thoughts, and one person wrote in saying how much they are succeeding at witnessing their thinking and their goal was to be in a perfect state of witnessing.

So you see that success oriented sense of me remains, is still powerful. And so what is meant to transcend the ego can end up still being about reinforcing the ego. It is not the meditation technique that is wrong; it is just that we have empowered this sense of being a separate “me” for so long, it is hard to see freedom from it.

So a simple technique to self realization is simply that, to realize the Self, your sense of simply being beyond the ego and let your focus remain on that. So in this moment, close your eyes and become aware of what is here beyond thinking. Become aware of what you are beyond thought. Feel this sense of “I” that is here beyond the thought of “I.”

If you are trying to do it with thinking, you will not experience it. You have to sense what is here beyond the thinking. And in this practice, you will begin to sense that you in fact exist beyond this thinking “me.” You feel that even beyond the idea “I am Sarah” that you still exist, as awareness itself.

This experience of what you are beyond thinking is not solid, does not contain boundaries, yet it is aware or more accurately, it is awareness itself. And as you begin to relax into it you will also sense that the nature of this awareness is peace and love.

And this is the first part of self realization, to realize for yourself what you are beyond your thinking.

Feel yourself existing in this moment, beyond being a person, beyond having a name, beyond the thinker, transcendent any idea of “me” there is still the experience that you exist as awareness itself.

And then once you sense that you are consciousness, fix your attention on the realization that you are consciousness, approach life from this direct experience that you are consciousness. Not the concept that you are consciousness, but the very experience, the absolute feeling in this moment that you are consciousness.

By resting your attention on consciousness, you empower self realization; you empower your true self. You begin to weaken this sense of being bound by the thinking “me” with all of its stress and struggles and begin to experience the oneness you truly are beyond thought. You begin to come into a state of enlightened awareness that is permanent.

This simple path to self realization is something you can practice in sitting meditation but you can also do it during any other time of the day. While working, while you drive, while you walk, while you exercise, even while as you sleep.

But this practice although powerful in itself is usually not enough to attain enlightenment. Usually, the grace of an self realized master is needed.

One who has already attained full self realization actually emits Shakti, the subtle energy of enlightenment. And it is this energy that actually awakens you to self realization. Simply by being close such an enlightened Guru, this Shakti gets transmitted to you and starts to awaken you into deep meditation and samadhi.

How to attain self realization

This essay was written in a heightened state of awareness. It covers a whole range of ideas about the state of Brahman and requires attention and multiple readings to understand its full meaning and purport. It is a modern Upanishad in itself. Jayaram V

Who is this mysterious Brahman? Who is this Being, whom we call God, who goes by different names, who is described so graciously in the Upanishads and extolled for centuries by seers and sages in the sacred land of the Vedas? Who is HE to attain whom people renounce everything, prepare themselves for hardships, risk everything and pursue Him day and night?

In His thought, thoughts disappear, the mind subsides into stillness, and all boundaries disappear. In His pursuit, all pursuits come to an end. Seeking Him, one leaves behind all seeking. Who is this Great Being, whom even gods find difficult to explain? Beyond darkness and light, beyond all diversity and visibility, beyond all qualities and quarters, beyond all activity and forms, beyond all imagination and vision, beyond the silence of all silences, beyond life and death, is Brahman, whom none can explain in human language to our complete satisfaction.

When you find Him, you do not find yourself. When you are with Him, you are without Him. When you see Him, you do not see anything else. The mystics find him, yet do not know him. He is known to the unknown, and unknown to the known. Your knowledge does not help you to reach there. Neither your wealth nor your thoughts. The entrance to the world of Brahman is right within you, but the veil of ignorance which stands between Him and you is difficult to pierce.

Occasionally one may get a glimpse of Him by chance, as Indra, Vayu and Agni had. He appears like a lightning, in a flash, in the darkness of your mind and leaves you wondering what you just saw. It was how the teacher of Kena Upanishad described his vision of him. Who can really know Him with their limited consciousness? Who can fathom that mystery and yet return to tell the story of his encounter? How can a part know the whole, unless it becomes the whole? When the part becomes the whole, does it not cease to be a part? This is the problem of Knowing Brahman. When you do not know Brahman, you cannot be Brahman. When you know Brahman, you cease to be the person you are.

Who is Brahman then?

Brahman, is the very Self, the indivisible, pure, “I” ness, which is everywhere, in everything and around everything. There is no duality, division or dichotomy in Brahman. Brahman is one Supreme endless unitary feeling of “I” ness. That “I”ness is pure, immutable, indivisible and universal in Brahman, but manifests in the field of Nature as selfishness and egoism.

In the supreme consciousness of Brahman, there is no “you” or otherness. In him, “you” are lost because the notion of “you” remains absent forever. When you achieve union with Brahman (brahmasparsha), you cannot explain your experience (brahmanubhuthi) to others, because in him there is no experience of experience.

In that state, there is no objectivity, or the duality of subject and object. Everything is part of one, endless, vast, immeasurable Self, in which at the highest level there is One only, without another. It is consciousness without distinction, awareness without duality, and absorption without the feeling of separation. Everything is Self, the one, indistinguishable “I-am-ness”. In that ocean of supreme consciousness, there is no “me” or “mine” either, because egoism and possessiveness, which are part of the egoistic individuality, are completely absent there.

We possess things or fall in love with them because the Brahman (Self) in us is attracted to the Brahman in them. In worldly life, we know no other way to achieve union with Brahman. Due to Maya, the soul’s aspiration to be with Brahman becomes sublimated into endless desires for things and possessions in the field of Nature. By seeking things and having them we want to overcome the feeling of separation from Brahman, which is created by our experience of duality and spatial distance. We indulge in sense-gratification and desire-ridden actions because we want to overcome the feeling of separation and incompleteness, by filling our lives with numerous things.

In Brahman, there is no object and subject, no experience and experiencer, and no knower and the known. Everything is one endless indistinguishable “I” ness. Brahman is “I am” and “I am” is the Eternal Reality. “I am”, the non-possessive, non-egoistic, non-dualistic “I am” is the Truth, the Whole Truth, the Purpose and the Goal of all life that seeks and extinguishes itself in seeking. In the stillness of Timelessness and immeasurable transcendence, Brahman is “I am Who I am.”

He is the all-pervading “I-am-ness,” who appears to others in whatever way they approach. Like the clouds in the sky, he appears differently to different people according to their worldly desires, aspiration, expectation, knowledge and awareness. The wise ones, however, look beyond the clouds at the sky and know that he is the infinite, unfathomable Self and beyond names and forms.

Experience of this awareness of Brahman as the immeasurable, indescribable, indestructible and formless Self is what we call Self-Realization or the highest state of Samadhi. When we realize that there is nothing else in this vast universe, except the Eternal Self, who is also the inner Self of all, we reach the end of our long journey in the world of death-ridden, ephemeral forms. That journey begins when we are separated from Brahman and ends when we become One with him.

All craving, competition, striving, envy, and comparison arise because of the absence of this awareness. Our hidden yearning for Brahman and our determination to become complete and perfect and return to him become manifest in our wakeful consciousness as hunger and thirst for the things of Brahman, which the Upanishads describe as his food or materiality.

When a seeker realizes that he is everything, and the things that he seeks and owns are also part of the same reality that pervades all, where is the need for him to seek them or compete with others to own them? The soul does not need things because it does not depend upon them. It is the body and the individuality, which surround the soul and create that confusion and the sense of dependence.

True renunciation comes out of the awareness that you are the infinite, all-pervading, immutable, eternal Self and you are the essence of all things here and hereafter. Without that awareness and the knowledge of oneness, renunciation itself becomes a striving, and in that striving, lurk the shadows of duality, egoism, selfish intent, fear, anger, envy, lust, pride and the delusion of ownership and doership.

The following story from a Sufi teaching amply illustrates the point. It conveys the same message, but in the language of duality, with God as the other being rather than oneself. However, the message is the same. There is no otherness or duality in God. He is everything, without a second. For him all this is God.

A man once knocked on the door of God’s house.

“Who’s is there?” asked God from within.

“It’s me,” said the man.

“Go away then. There is no room for two,” said God.

The man departed and wandered in the arid desert until he realized his error. Returning to the door, he knocked again.

Then who are you in reality?

Let’s look at it from another angle. You say, ‘My head,’ ‘My body,’ ‘My feet,’ ‘My eyes,’ ‘My ears.’ You don’t say, ‘I am head,’ ‘I am body,’ etc. This means that all your body parts fall under ‘My.’ Similarly, you say, ‘My watch,’ ‘My eyeglasses,’ ‘My house,’ ‘My car,’ you don’t say ‘I am watch,’ ‘I am eyeglasses,’ etc., which means that all your belongings also go under ‘My.’ So then who is the owner of everything that comes under ‘My’? Keeping all the items that fall under “my” aside, you are only left with the owner – “I”. That “I” is precisely what you need to realize and that is Self Realization.

“If one realizes his own Self, then he himself is an Absolute Supreme Soul (Parmatma).”

Realization of “I” through the Spiritual Master

Just as a goldsmith is required to separate gold from other metals, a Spiritual Master (Gnani Purush) is required to attain Self Realization. With the grace of the Spiritual Master (Gnani Purush), it is possible to achieve this Self Realization via a scientific process called Gnan Vidhi.

Gnan Vidhi – A Scientific Process of Self Realization

Gnan Vidhi is a 2 hour process of Self Realization in the unique path of Akram Vignan. The first 48 minutes is where the Spiritual Master calls out sentences known as “bhed vignan” (science of separation), the seeker repeats these sentences. This process of Self Realization separates the Self and the non-Self. It is then, followed by an explanation of “5 Agnas” (5 cardinal principles) through practical examples. “5 Agnas” will nurture and protect the experience of the Soul along with living your life with equanimity and harmony.
