Understanding how to control your mind begins with realizing that you are in full control of your state . Since your mind, body and emotions are interconnected, you can use mind-body techniques to bring greater cognizance to your thinking, which in turn influences your feelings. As you embrace the practice of living in the moment, you become more adept at maintaining self-awareness in any circumstance. And, as Tony Robbins says, it is the practice of embracing self-awareness in the current moment that ultimately drives lasting happiness . In fact, research on self-determination theory demonstrates that the more you feel you’re in control of your circumstances (by staying grounded in the moment), the more productive and fulfilled you’re likely to feel . Along these lines, resist the urge to take a “TGIF” approach to life, living for the weekend (or whatever high points you tend to prioritize over the duller, more mundane points in your life). Instead of wishing you were somewhere else, embrace your existence in the present and you’ll be well on your way to learning how to control your mind.

When your thoughts are on auto-pilot, the prospect of learning how to control your mind might seem impossible. However, meditation is one of the most natural ways to calm and center your mind. The philosophy of meditation centers on the fact that the mind can only focus on one thought at a time. When you meditate, you simply draw your focus to something calming like your breath or a mantra such as “I am calm and relaxed.” If you get distracted while practicing meditation, simply begin again without beating yourself up. Meditation requires repetition to master and as you build it into your day-to-day routine, you’ll find that mindfulness becomes more natural.

Like most of us, you’ve probably had the experience of waking up in a bad mood you can’t seem to shake. When this happens, you likely wonder how to control your mind when you simply don’t feel up to it. This is where the power of priming comes into play. Priming engages the mind by first engaging the body by taking several deep, cleansing breaths to cultivate a positive physical state. As you focus on your physical state, you’re then able to clear your mind and focus your thoughts on the present moment. As you practice priming consistently, you’ll find that it becomes intuitive. By building intention into your thought processes, you more fully understand how to take control of your mind.

Recognizing limiting beliefs

As you build mindfulness practices like meditation and priming into your day-to-day life, you’ll begin to discover more and more about the beliefs that shape your outlook on life. Beliefs are multifaceted, stemming from mental, emotional, spiritual, cultural and physical influences. Beliefs are therefore very powerful in shaping how we view ourselves and the world, informing what we believe we can and can’t accomplish in life. It is part of human nature to accept our beliefs without questioning them. Mindfulness practices seek to address this tendency to turn a blind eye. Instead of simply accepting all our beliefs, we must commit to investigating whether our beliefs are certifiably true, or whether they are the product of circumstances and experiences that do not accurately reflect who we really are. The good news is that while you cannot change events or experiences in your past, you can change how you perceive those events. You can learn how to control your mind by reframing your beliefs in light of your highest self worth. Commit to being honest with yourself, and you’ll become able to uncover limiting beliefs that may seem functional but actually keep you from reaching your full potential.

Maybe you don’t have any trouble with your thoughts, but I do. Thoughts pop into my mind without my permission faster than a mosquito bites my skin on a sweltering summer afternoon. And, equally without my permission.

Descartes, father of modern philosophy, pointed to both the distinguishing characteristic of human beings and to the biggest curse of human beings when he made his famous statement, “I think. Therefore, I am.”

The fact that you and I can think, reflect on the past, imagine the future, even to be conscious of our own consciousness is what distinguishes humans from all other animals. The fact that you and I CAN think, reflect and so often regret the past, imagine and so often fear the future, even to be unconscious of our own capacity to be conscious is the biggest curse humans live with and so try to escape from almost continually.

In other words, “Thoughts,” as Buddhist monk Matthieu Ricard, “can be our best friends and our worst enemies.” I would highly recommend his book entitled Happiness: A Guide to Developing Life’s Most Important Skill. I heard him speak for the first time just last week and love the way he blends the best in psychology and the science of happiness with Buddhist teachings regarding the mind and its many afflictions.

Until what is on the inside – that is, your mind – is corrected, the external world, that is, how you perceive and experience the world around you will be a mere reflection of it.

In other words, if the world around you is to you an unfriendly, hateful, scary, and judgment-filled place, why is this so? Have you ever sought to know why? Is this the way the world really is? Or, is this the way you really are? Often we project onto the world, as well as onto other people, the afflictive, negative thoughts and emotions that we cannot admit. Or refuse to acknowledge.

More and more, I am convinced, you and I create the world in which we live. Pop psychologists glibly suggest, “Change the way you look at things and the things you look at change.” While this is true, the problem for most people is how to change their negative thinking and the afflictive emotions that are its inevitable consequence.

Want to change your inner world? Better control your mind, as well as your thoughts?

Here’s the only way possible:

1. Meditate daily. If you’re one of those persons who quickly excuses yourself as having tried meditation and discovering it does not work for you, that’s the first thought you need to change. Why? Because it isn’t so. So much of our thinking is just that – wrong. Deceitful. And, the most deceived person is one-and-the-same deceiver. You CAN learn to meditate and you must, if you wish to learn to control your thoughts and your thinking.

Books on meditation are as abundant today as cookbooks. I would recommend The Miracle of Mindfulness: An Introduction to the Practice of Meditation, written by Thich Nhat Hanh.

2. Observe your thoughts. Don’t judge them, observe them. How many times has a thought popped into your mind – let’s say some kind of judgmental thought about a colleague at work and, instantly, you jump into judgment mode, finding fault with yourself for even thinking something negative about someone else.

I would suggest an alternative solution to unwanted thoughts. Instead of quickly dismissing them and then judging yourself harshly for having such thoughts, start from the premise that thoughts are neither right nor wrong. They just are. It’s what you do with your thoughts that introduce the “rightness” or “wrongness” of them. In other words, in the purported words of Martin Luther, “You cannot keep a bird from flying over your head; what you can do is prevent it from building a nest in your hair.”

How? By observing your thoughts. In the east, this is called acting as the “witnessing presence.” Like witnessing an accident and then reporting on it to the authorities. Be the observer of your own thoughts, even the ones that frighten you.

3. Cultivate the space between thoughts. In other words, as you train yourself to be the observer of your mind. you thoughts, you are actually cultivating what easterners call “the primary consciousness” that underlies all thinking. It is that “space between the notes,” said Claude Debussy “that makes the music.” If there were no spaces between the notes on a sheet of music, the sounds you would hear would not only be unintelligible but meaningless, even annoying.

This space is the place of internal peace. It is what some call “pure consciousness.”

The idea of emptying your mind of thought is terrifying to many people.

Why? Because they mistakenly think they ARE their thoughts. This is the core error in our shared human experience. You are NOT your thoughts. You’re not even the observer of your thoughts, although that is much closer to who you really are.

Why is this all so important? Because this is the only way to get control of your thoughts. And, if you wish to be happy, and who among us does not wish for this, you must learn to manage the mind. Otherwise, it will menace you like the constant dripping of a leaky faucet.

The problem in our western world is not that we do not know how to think. As enumerated so eloquently by the spiritual teacher Eckhart Tolle in A New Earth, “the problem most people have is not thinking; it is not knowing how to stop thinking.”

Make this your spiritual practice for to do so is to pursue.

The moment that you draw a conclusion about yourself, research shows that you’re likely to do two things; look for evidence that reinforces your belief and discredit anything that conflicts with it.

If you don’t become the master of your mind, your mind will master you.

You are either the master of your mind or a victim of it.

Your mind is not designed to make you happy. Studies of brain activity have demonstrated that the brain responds more actively to negative images than positive or neutral images. This is because your brain acts as a survival mechanism. It evolved to keep you safe and protected from danger. This is why the human race has been able to survive as a species for so long.

However, there comes a point when you have to take responsibility for the creation of your happiness. You cannot rely on anything or anyone to do that for you. Happiness is an inside job. Think of your mind as if it were a sentry on a ship whose job it is to watch out for potential threats.

Just like a sentry, your mind will always warn you about potential risks that could disrupt your zone of comfort. Don’t forget that you are the captain of the ship that is your life. If you allow your mind to take the wheel, you will surely get off course. This is why it’s so important that you direct your mind towards the destiny that you want to create and experience.

Your higher self is the real you. It embodies the true representation of who you are. However, if you want your actions to align with your higher self, you have to set the intention that you are ready to connect to it.

A great way to cultivate this alignment is through creating a daily meditation practice.

If you’re ever tried to meditate and quiet the mental chatter you’ve probably noticed how difficult it can be. Where people get stuck is that they assume that the goal is to remove thoughts altogether. This is the wrong approach to take. You want to become an active observer of your thoughts, without becoming attached to them.

Like I said above, the mind will always point out what is wrong or missing because it’s primary role is to keep you safe from danger. The mind doesn’t want to make you successful or happy. This is why you have to be hyper-aware of how the mind works. When it starts creating disempowering stories, you’ve got to distance yourself and practice the art of non-attachment.

You are not your thoughts. The moment that you accept this reality is the moment that you feel empowered to take control of your life. You always have a choice of how you respond to your thoughts. You can either succumb to their power, or you can decide to not follow them and create your path.

Our thoughts block us from experiencing the happiness that can be found in the present moment. A lot of people miss out on life because they are so fixated on what is yet to come. Meditation allows you to connect with the here and now and surrender to what is. This is where you find an overflowing abundance of love, joy, and happiness.

Make it a habit to become the master of your mind. If you can commit to a meditation practice for 30 days or more, I promise that you will start to see a massive shift take place in every area of your life.

That title is a bit misleading (but it sure is catchy isn’t it?). You can’t actually “control” your thoughts – at least not in the same way that you can control other things, like a blender or a remote control car or a group of dancing robots.

It would be great if you could, but you can’t. You can’t control every thought that comes into your head. Thoughts will creep in that you have no control over. For example:

Insecure thoughts: “I’m not good enough and ______ probably thinks I’m annoying.”

Fearful thoughts: “I’ll never be able to fix this or get to that point in my career, marriage, etc.”

Negative thoughts: “My life is so difficult and everything is working against me.”

Impure thoughts: (no explanation needed for this one)

Dealing with thoughts like these isn’t easy. It can be debilitating at times. It feels like you’re in round 4 of a 15-round sumo wrestling match with this guy. No matter what you do, the thoughts just keep coming and coming and coming…

Is there a solution? Is there anything we can do? Or are we destined to be slaves to our thoughts forever?

Jesus said, “And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” John 8:32

The solution to your thought problem is often the exact opposite of what you might think. The solution isn’t to REMOVE those pesky old thoughts, but rather to REPLACE them.

Imagine you have a 1,000 gallon tank of water. Imagine that it’s full to the brim and you want to empty the water of it. How would you do it?

You have two options:

Option A: try to pick up the pool and dump the water out (aka, the dumb way)

Option B: throw a rock in (aka, the smart/I-obviously-listen-to-Fr.-Anthony way)

What would happen if you tried the first option – to pick it up and dump the water out? YOU WILL FAIL. You will fail and you will be exhausted as well. That’s because trying to REMOVE the water doesn’t work.

But what would happen if you tried the second option – throw a rock in? A little water would splash out. And if you threw another rock in? A little more would splash out. And what would happen if you continued to throw rocks in there – one a day every day for 10 years?

ALL THE WATER WOULD BE GONE!

The same is true for your thoughts. Stop trying to remove your old thoughts and instead seek to replace them. How?

Below are four ways (or rocks) that you can use to replace those negative thought patterns.

1) Talk it out

As long as your thoughts remain hidden inside your head, they have power over you. But once you let them out, they somehow become a lot easier to deal with.

2) Read A LOT!

Reading is the fastest way to put new thoughts in your head. For me personally, there is no more important habit than this. I believe that reading will bring more fruit into life – when done consistently – than just about any other spiritual practice. It certainly has for me.

3) Pray, but not a lot

There’s a good way to pray about your thought problem – “Lord, I surrender my thoughts to You and ask Your Holy Spirit to guide my thoughts this day.

And then there’s a not-so-good way to pray: “please God help me to stop remembering my mistakes and thinking that I’m a bad person. I know I made mistakes but please help me to stop remembering them all the time – especially that one mistake that was just so awful. Please please please help me stop thinking about that mistake and how awful I am…”

Prayer is good, but obsessive prayer is not good. The kind of prayer you need is the kind that a) is THANKFUL, b) is TRUSTING, and c) PRAISING.

4) Just say NO!

Learn to reject thoughts that you KNOW are not true and from the devil. JUST SAY NO! Say what Jesus said when His disciple Peter introduced a thought that He didn’t want/need to hear, “GET BEHIND ME SATAN! You are an offense to Me, for you are not mindful of the things of God, but the things of men.” (Matthew 16:23)

Trust me, if you struggle with your thought life, you are not alone. It is something that everyone struggles with to some degree. Believe me, there’s help for you. You don’t need to live as a slave to your thoughts forever. But you must be committed to taking small steps every single day and being patient as those small steps add up to major changes in your way of thinking.

Question: “How can I take control of my thoughts?”

Answer: Many Christians struggle with this issue, especially in our highly technological world, but taking control of our thoughts is essential. Proverbs 4:23 states, “Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life.” The “heart” includes the mind and all that proceeds from it. Someone said that every sin we commit, we commit twice, once in our thoughts and again when we act upon those thoughts. It is easier to rid our lives of sin if we attack it at this fundamental thought level rather than waiting for it to become rooted in our lives by our actions and then try to pull it out.

There is also a difference between being tempted (a thought entering into the mind) and sinning (dwelling upon an evil thought and wallowing in it). It is important to understand that when a thought enters our mind, we examine it based upon God’s Word and determine if we should continue down that path or reject the thought and replace it with another thought. If we have already allowed a habit to form in our thought lives, it becomes more difficult to change the path of our thoughts, even as it is hard to get a car out of a deep rut and onto a new track. Here are some biblical suggestions for taking control of our thoughts and getting rid of wrong thoughts:

1. Be in God’s Word so that when a sinful thought enters our mind (a temptation), we will be able to recognize it for what it is and know what course to take. Jesus in the wilderness (Matthew 4) responded to each of Satan’s temptations with Scripture that applied to the direction He knew His mind should take instead of beginning down the path of the sinful thought. When tempted to meet His physical need (turn stone into bread), He recited the passage about the importance of relying upon God. When tempted to serve Satan in order to obtain the glory of the world, He brought up the passage that says we are to serve and worship God alone and speak of the glory that belongs to Him and those who are His. When tempted to test God (to see if God was really there and would keep His promises), Jesus responded with passages that stress the importance of believing God without having to see Him demonstrate His presence.

Quoting Scripture in a time of temptation is not a talisman, but rather serves the purpose of getting our minds onto a biblical track, but we need to know the Word of God AHEAD of time in order to accomplish this. Thus, a daily habit of being in the Word in a meaningful way is essential. If we are aware of a certain area of constant temptation (worry, lust, anger, etc.), we need to study and memorize key passages that deal with those issues. Looking for both what we are to avoid (negative) and how we are to properly respond (positive) to tempting thoughts and situations—before they are upon us—will go a long way to giving us victory over them.

2. Live in dependence upon the Holy Spirit, chiefly through seeking His strength through prayer (Matthew 26:41). If we rely upon our own strength, we will fail (Proverbs 28:26;Jeremiah 17:9; Matthew 26:33).

3. We are not to feed our minds with that which will promote sinful thoughts. This is the idea of Proverbs 4:23. We are to guard our hearts—what we allow into them and what we allow them to dwell on. Job 31:1 states, “I have made a covenant with my eyes; Why then should I look upon a young woman” (NKJV). Romans 13:14 states, “But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to fulfill its lusts.” Thus, we are to avoid periodicals, videos, websites, conversations, and situations that will set us up for a fall. We should also avoid spending time with those who would encourage us down these wrong paths.

4. We are to pursue hard after God, replacing sinful thoughts with godly pursuits and mindsets. This is the principle of replacement. When tempted to hate someone, we replace those hateful thoughts with godly actions: we do good to them, speak well of them, and pray for them (Matthew 5:44). Instead of stealing, we should work hard to earn money so we can look for opportunities to give to others in need (Ephesians 4:28). When tempted to lust after a woman, we turn our gaze, praise God for the way He has made us—male and female—and pray for the woman (for example: “Lord, help this young woman to come to know you if she does not, and to know the joy of walking with you”), then think of her as a sister (1 Timothy 5:2). The Bible often speaks of “putting off” wrong actions and thoughts but then “putting on” godly actions and thoughts (Ephesians 4:22-32). Merely seeking to put off sinful thoughts without replacing those thoughts with godly ones leaves an empty field for Satan to come along and sow his weeds (Matthew 12:43-45).

5. We can use fellowship with other Christians the way God intended. Hebrews 10:24-25 states, “And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds. Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.” Fellow Christians who will encourage us in the changes we desire (best if of the same gender), who will pray for and with us, who will ask us in love how we are doing, and who will hold us accountable in avoiding the old ways, are valuable friends indeed.

Last and most important, these methods will be of no value unless we have placed our faith in Christ as Savior from our sin. This is where we absolutely must start! Without this, there can be no victory over sinful thoughts and temptations, and God’s promises for His children are not for us, nor is the Holy Spirit’s power available to us!

God will bless those who seek to honor Him with what matters most to Him: who we are inside and not just what we appear to be to others. May God make Jesus’ description of Nathanael true also of us—a man [or woman] in whom there is no guile (John 1:47).

How to Control Your Thoughts

Thoughts can drive your feelings so fast that you don’t even know what hit you. Before you know it, you’re in a slump, feeling down in the dumps, angry or even hopeless.

Those feelings don’t come out of nowhere, they start in your mind.

2 Corinthians 10:5 reminds us to take every thought captive.

Philippians 4:8 give specific instructions on what to think on.

Romans 12:2 commands us to not conform to the ways of this world but be transformed by the renewing of our minds.

These scriptures give us a strong indication that we are responsible for controlling our thoughts. God doesn’t give us commands without good reason. He knows that an uncontrolled mind results in an out of control life.

But the goal is not only to change your mind, but to change your mindset.

The mindset is where your default reactions take place. The mindset is what has been so deeply ingrained in you that it seems automatic. But it can be changed. And when you change your mindset, you can successfully change your life.

You do that by taking control of your thoughts.

But when you are bombarded by an average of 50,000 thoughts per day, how do you possibly control ALL of them?

Here are two ways to control your thoughts biblically:

Active Control

The first way to take control of your thoughts requires action on your part. After all, 2 Corinthians 10:5 reminds us We destroy every proud obstacle that keeps people from knowing God. We capture their rebellious thoughts and teach them to obey Christ.

This means we are to be active participants.

So what does it mean to “take captive?” It means we take hold of the thought, much like we would a prisoner. When a prisoner is captured, he is not given a slap on the wrist and told to leave. But isn’t that what we do with our negative thoughts? We try to put them out of our mind and get on with our life. That’s as ineffective as setting a criminal free without having to account for his actions.

Instead of telling yourself to stop thinking certain thoughts, take them through an interrogation process. Ask questions like: Where did you come from? What are you doing here? Only when you get the answers to these questions, can you determine what to do with the thoughts.

Then actively cross-reference your thoughts to the Word of God. The Word of God is the benchmark. If you think negative, self-defeating thoughts, but God says that you are the apple of his eye, you will have to actively choose to believe God’s Word over your own.

If your thoughts are always consumed with worry but God says He will supply all your needs, you will have to actively determine in your mind to trust Him.

Some thoughts simply need to be cast down. Others are a result of previous trauma that hasn’t been dealt with properly. Still others are from a deeply ingrained mindset that needs to be changed, and you can go about changing it by using the passive method.

Passive Control

If you want your mindset to be renewed, you will need to change what goes into your mind daily. In order to wash out the old stinkin’ thinkin’, you must pour in the new until it overflows into your life and eventually creates a new mindset from which you can draw.

How do you do this is to pour in God’s Word until it seeps out of you and cascades over every area of struggle you’re battling. Fill your mind with the Word of God by reading scripture. Scripture can be read like a book, from cover to cover, or it can be read topically. If there is an area of struggle in your life, discover all the scriptures that speak to your struggle and saturate your mind with what God has to say about it.

You can also fill your mind with the Word of God by listening. The Bible App often will have a way to listen to Scripture. You can also immerse yourself in teachings from podcasts to YouTube channels. You can find many passionate men and women of God who are rightly dividing his truth. My Building Faith Podcast and YouTube channel offer weekly encouragement to live the Christian life. Whatever you do, just take it all in. Let it permeate every part of you until you think the way God thinks.

The Holy Spirit is eager to use you for God’s Kingdom. When your mind is filled with His truth, you are a vessel ready to be put to good use.

My hope is that you will not allow out of control thoughts to run your life. There’s too much joy and promise waiting for you.

How to Control Your Thoughts

Quite often we find ourselves with many negative thoughts going through our mind. These trains of thoughts can become very powerful as we endlessly repeat them in our mind. The problem is that that the more we focus on the thoughts, the more powerful they become. Therefore, it can become very difficult to stop these endless cycles of thoughts.

However, it is definitely possible and these are a few tips to control our thoughts.

1. Make a conscious decision to Stop the thoughts

The problem is that sometimes we attach ourselves to certain ideas and problems, and we subconsciously get a kind of pleasure from going through a certain problem / issue. If we subconsciously keep inviting the thoughts, we will never be able to stop them. Therefore, the first stage is to make a clear and conscious decision to stop the repetition of the thoughts. Be aware of their negative impact and don’t allow them to come any more. This conscious step is an indispensable stage in controlling our thoughts.

2. Look upon the Thoughts as being Outside of yourself.

When we first try to stop the thoughts, it seems very difficult because they feel such a strong part of our mind. Therefore, the second stage is to feel that the thoughts are separate to our self. When a thought appears in your mind, look upon the thought as coming from outside yourself. This is a very powerful way to reduce the impact of thoughts on our mind. Once we realise our thoughts are separate to ourselves it becomes possible to stop them.

3. Who is it who listens to thoughts?

This is a technique to try and discover the origination of your thoughts. Whenever a thought appears, just ask yourself, who is it who is thinking this? What we do is to try and discover the source of thoughts. Through asking this question we realise that there is an “I” which can decide to accept or reject thoughts. By asking this question we will be able to stop the thoughts as soon as they enter. You are not a victim of your own thoughts, it is you who either rejects or gives life to thoughts.

4. Catch thoughts as soon as they appear.

This exercise requires a determined effort on our part. We need to be vigilant and watch every thought that enters our mind. As soon as we see a negative thought enter, we must immediately discard it and refuse to follow it. The more we follow thoughts, the more difficult it becomes to stop them later. Therefore, it is best to catch them as soon as possible.

5. Concentrate on Something else.

If we have a train of thoughts which have gained a stranglehold over our mind, the best solution is often to just try and do something completely different. Don’t just sit around, go and do something which gives you no opportunity to ruminate over your thoughts. By doing this we ignore the thoughts completely, and they lose there hold over us.

“Wrong thoughts are inside us just because we identify ourselves with these thoughts. If we identify with something else, immediately they have to leave us.”

6. Meditation

Meditation is the best way to learn how to control our thoughts. Meditation involves the art of concentration and quietening the mind. In meditation we not only try to control our thoughts but we also can bring to the fore our inner qualities of peace and oneness. If we can invoke the calming power of our own heart, then we use an alternative force to take the place of the negative mind.

“The mind has its own power, and right now this power is stronger than your present eagerness and determination to meditate. But if you can get help from your heart, then gradually you will be able to control your mind. The heart, in turn, gets constant assistance from the soul, which is all light and all power.”

We should meditate every day so that we can bring to the fore as much as peace as possible into our mind. If we only meditate when we are overrun with thoughts, we will find meditation very difficult. But, if we gain peace of mind through our daily meditation then we develop our inner capacities to control our thoughts.

How we see, experience, and understand the world is very subjective. Are we living in a copied world or a true world? This question is one of the most important questions we have to look at, analyze, and work to understand in order to move through life’s situations easily. First of all, I would like to differentiate between the true world and the copied world. The true world is the real world around us. It is what we can see with our eyes. However, it doesn’t represent what we are. This where NLP and the True World meet.

We think that we are living in the true world while we actually live in the copied world.

Emanuel Kant spoke of the true world and the copied world and how the teachings of Ludwig Wittgenstein came to emphasize Kant’s point of view. Before Emanuel Kant, the perception was that if we interpreted and expressed things as they are, then we are accepting the interpretations as truth. And, if we interpreted things differently than how they are, then we could accept and call the interpretations false. In short, if it meets our inner belief we accept it as truth and if not, we consider it false.

Kant’s argument was that it was impossible to accept the things in the external world as they are. Kant changed this perception to the subject of our cognition (the world of appearance). It was revolutionary to change the things in the external world to the subject of our recognition as the criteria of the truth; this is called Kant’s Copernican revolution.

Kant held the belief that objects in the world conform to our knowledge. This means that the mind is the main creator of the perceived world, not the outside objects determining the truth.
Therefore, the external world is nothing more than a mirror of what we think about. And what we see in most of the cases, is the reflection of what’s going on in our mind. If we have positive thoughts we will perceive the external world in a completely different way than if we have negative thoughts.

The secret here is the thoughts.

Thoughts are what make some people happy and others upset and dissatisfied. When you can learn how to control your thoughts with NLP you will be able to create your happiness. In my opinion, this is one of the most important advantages of Kant’s theory. It is the foundation of the studies that followed which proved that we are responsible for all our circumstances. Our thoughts determine our actions and reactions in the external world.

Ludwig Wittgenstein was one of the best philosophers in the 20th century. He is the founder of the “Linguistic Turn”. He changed philosophy based on ‘reason’ into philosophy based on ‘language’. How language related to the world, and what the limits of language were, and what this all meant for the philosophers, had a huge impact.

Ludwig Wittgenstein proposed that language is formatted based upon the social context as much as on the logical analysis.

Based on the teachings of both Emanuel Kant and Ludwig Wittgenstein, and by connecting these teachings to the new discoveries of science and how the brain functions, we can now see it very clear that both men were referring to the belief system but using different words and different approaches.

Kant proposed that what we think about we see, which ultimately is our belief system. Wittgenstein proposed that our internal world is expressed by the language we use.

Putting both concepts together can help us analyze how others perceive the world. I call this the Dominant Language, which is the results of the Dominant Thoughts. This means that we can easily analyze our thoughts by watching our language. In my opinion, we can achieve a new level of thought control by analyzing our language. This is what NLP was based on at the very beginning- That our language affects our thoughts and vice versa, and that by controlling one of them the other will change dramatically. Can you describe your world in one word or in one sentence and write it down? I urge you to read it what you wrote, analyzing it very carefully to be sure that what you have written is actually expressing your dominant thoughts.

I want you to now read what you have written once more; ask yourself what you were doing the last three hours before writing this word or sentence. If you were doing different activities in the last three hours, how would your description differ?

Now think about how you can link your language to your experiences and thoughts, with having the awareness that they affect and are affected by each other. How would this change your daily life?

The power of your thoughts – Where many strongholds begin
The enemy loves to put thoughts into the believer’s mind. Those thoughts (if meditated on), produce strongholds, which produces feelings, which lands you into bondage… all because you listened to the devil more then your heavenly Father! I am going to use a common stronghold here in this teaching as an example… an incorrect perception of who you are in Christ. There are many other strongholds out there, but this teaching will give you a general idea of how many strongholds are formed.

How it works
Two voices are speaking: Satan likes to come along and tell you, “Look at that sin you did 5 years ago! That was so bad! You are such a failure!” But Jesus, through God’s Word, tries to tell you that if you turn to Him, you will be forgiven (1 John 1:9), and your past will be forgotten: Isaiah 43:25, “I, even I, am he that blotteth out thy transgressions for mine own sake, and will not remember thy sins.”

You are faced with a choice: You can either listen to Satan’s lie that you are a failure, or you can listen to God’s Word that tells you that your past has been washed away and you are a new creature in Christ! 2 Cor 5:17, “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.”

Whichever voice you listen to will crowd the other one out: If you have two dogs who fight all the time, and you can only afford to feed one of them, how do you know which one will win? The one you feed! The same is true in the spiritual realm. The more you listen to Satan’s lies and deception, the more he will build strongholds in your mind, and the more strongholds that go up, the harder it will be to hear God’s voice. The other side of the coin is true too… the more you feast yourself on the truth in God’s Word, the more it tears down strongholds and makes it harder for the enemy’s voice to penetrate your system.

If you listen to Satan’s lies that you are a failure, he will continue to feed you that lie, and it will grow into a stronghold (a lie that is believed, or an incorrect thinking pattern). Your feelings are quite often a direct result of your thoughts. If you think you are a failure, you will feel like one.

If you listen to your heaven Father, who is speaking truth to you through His Word, you will begin to tear down the strongholds in your life. When you meditate on the truth in God’s Word, it will become part of you, and before long, you will be feeling different, simply because you are exchanging lies of the devil for the truth in God’s Word. When you believe that your sins are forgiven, you can then allow your conscience to be cleansed from dead works by the blood of Jesus: Hebrews 9:14, “How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?”

A practical example
Let me show you how many believers end up feeling like losers… guilt-ridden by their pasts. It all starts with a simple voice of condemnation from the enemy. Satan, through his network of evil spirits (that’s how the devil speaks to people, since Satan can’t be everywhere at once), injects thoughts into their mind that remind them of their past and their failures. They begin to listen to his voice and agree with it. They did sin, and they failed. But instead of looking at the solution, which is repentance and the blood of Jesus (which washes away sin), they continue to listen to the enemy who keeps reminding them of their past. As they continue to do this, stronghold(s) are formed. A stronghold is an incorrect thinking pattern based on lies and formed in deception. Once a stronghold is in place, the person naturally thinks of their past instead of focusing on the fact that their past has been forgiven and wiped away. They believe they are a failure instead of believing the truth in God’s Word, which tells them that they have been forgiven, washed clean, and even God Himself has chosen to forget their dirty past! So instead of feeling like a child of God who was washed clean in the blood of Jesus, they feel unworthy, guilty and consider them self a loser. What a shame for a child of God to feel that way!

Your thoughts can affect how you feel
When you believe something, it will affect your feelings. When you believe you are a failure, you will feel like one. When you believe you are a forgiven saint, you will feel like one.

The difference between a guilt-ridden Christian and a light-hearted and joyful Christian is often one simple thing… what they are thinking about. Guess who’s thinking about the sin, the guilt and the past? Now guess who’s thinking about how they have been washed clean and they are a new person in Christ Jesus?

Whatever you keep your mind on (think about often) will affect your whole being. Isaiah 26:3, “Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.”

An exception to the rule: Evil spirits are known to directly affect our emotions, feelings, etc. King Saul was tormented with fear and depression directly. However, evil spirits often use our thoughts to access our feelings, and this is done through the creation of strongholds. This is what we are addressing in this teaching… how the enemy uses our thoughts to build strongholds, and how strongholds affect our feelings.

In a nutshell
Thoughts from the enemy (if listened to) turn into strongholds (lies believed or incorrect thinking patterns) which affect how you feel (you feelings often stem from your beliefs) and can cause you to remain in bondage to plain simple ignorance. Jesus made it clear that it’s possible for a believer to remain in bondage to sin even after they’ve been set free, all due to ignorance of the truth in God’s Word (John 8:31-36).

If you think you’re a failure, you’ll feel like a failure. If you think you’re a new creation (washed clean from your past), you’ll feel clean and new… alive in Christ!

What’s truly wild is how intoxicating these emotions are and how they can swing like a pendulum from one extreme to another, and then you feel like you’re not in control of yourself.

Recently, I’ve been taking cold showers for both health reasons and to control my thoughts.

These are tough, tough, tough to get used to! Don’t get me wrong, I love taking warm showers just like everyone else. So there I am standing in the showers, telling myself anything I can to avoid taking a cold shower:

“Man, I’ve taken cold showers before, I’ve done those before. what do I have to prove? Plus, I really like the warm showers. “

Then, I remember that I am in control of my thoughts. I repeat the following to myself:

“I control my thoughts. My thoughts don’t control me.”

“I control my thoughts. My thoughts don’t control me.”

“I CONTROL MY THOUGHTS. MY THOUGHTS DON’T CONTROL ME.”

“I CONTROL MY THOUGHTS. MY THOUGHTS DON’T CONTROL ME.”

“I CONTROL MY THOUGHTS. MY THOUGHTS DON’T CONTROL ME.”

How to Control Your Thoughts

Maybe you don’t have any trouble with your thoughts, but I do. Thoughts pop into my mind without my permission faster than a mosquito bites my skin on a sweltering summer afternoon. And, equally without my permission.

Descartes, father of modern philosophy, pointed to both the distinguishing characteristic of human beings and to the biggest curse of human beings when he made his famous statement, “I think. Therefore, I am.”

The fact that you and I can think, reflect on the past, imagine the future, even to be conscious of our own consciousness is what distinguishes humans from all other animals. The fact that you and I can think, reflect and so often regret the past, imagine and so often fear the future, even to be unconscious of our own capacity to be conscious is the biggest curse humans live with and so try to escape from almost continually.

In other words, “Thoughts,” as Buddhist monk Matthieu Ricard, “can be our best friends and our worst enemies.” I would highly recommend his book entitled Happiness: A Guide to Developing Life’s Most Important Skill. I heard him speak for the first time just last week and love the way he blends the best in psychology and the science of happiness with Buddhist teachings regarding the mind and its many afflictions.

Until what is on the inside — that is, your mind — is corrected, the external world, that is, how you perceive and experience the world around you will be a mere reflection of it. In other words, if the world around you is to you an unfriendly, hateful, scary, and judgment-filled place, why is this so? Have you ever sought to know why? Is this the way the world really is? Or, is this the way you really are? Often we project onto the world, as well as onto other people, the afflictive, negative thoughts and emotions that we cannot admit. Or refuse to acknowledge.

More and more, I am convinced you and I create the world in which we live. Pop psychologists glibly suggest, “Change the way you look at things and the things you look at change.” While this is true, the problem for most people is how to change their negative thinking and the afflictive emotions that are its inevitable consequence.

Want to change your inner world? Better control your mind, as well as your thoughts?

Here’s the only way possible:

1. Meditate daily. If you’re one of those persons who quickly excuses yourself as having tried meditation and discovering it does not work for you, that’s the first thought you need to change. Why? Because it isn’t so. So much of our thinking is just that — wrong. Deceitful. And, the most deceived person is one-and-the-same deceiver. You can learn to meditate and you must, if you wish to learn to control your thoughts and your thinking.

Books on meditation are as abundant today as cookbooks. I would recommend The Miracle of Mindfulness: An Introduction to the Practice of Meditation, written by Thich Nhat Hanh.

2. Observe your thoughts. Don’t judge them, observe them. How many times has a thought popped into your mind, for example — let’s say some kind of judgmental thought about a colleague at work or even your partner at home and, instantly, you jump into judgment mode toward them, but then finding fault with yourself for even thinking something negative about someone else.

I would suggest an alternative solution to unwanted thoughts. Instead of quickly dismissing them and then judging yourself harshly for having such thoughts, start from the premise that thoughts are neither right nor wrong. They just are. It’s what you do with your thoughts that introduce the “rightness” or “wrongness” of them. In other words, in the purported words of Martin Luther, “You cannot keep a bird from flying over your head; what you can do is prevent it from building a nest in your hair.”

How? By observing your thoughts. In the east, this is called acting as the “witnessing presence.” Like witnessing an accident and then reporting on it to the authorities. Be the observer of your own thoughts, even the ones that frighten you.

3. Cultivate the space between thoughts. In other words, as you train yourself to be the observer of your mind. you thoughts, you are actually cultivating what easterners call “the primary consciousness” that underlies all thinking. It is that “space between the notes,” said Claude Debussy “that makes the music.” If there were no spaces between the notes on a sheet of music, the sounds you would hear would not only be unintelligible but meaningless, even annoying.

This space is the place of internal peace. It is what some call “pure consciousness.”

The idea of emptying your mind of thought is terrifying to many westerners, accustomed, as we are, to the mistaken notions that we are our thoughts and that every waking moment should be filled with thought. After all, “an idle mind,” or so my mother used to say, “is the devil’s workshop.”

This is the core error, however, in our shared human experience here in the west. The east is all about “emptying” while the west is into “acquiring,” and “accumulating.” Add to this the other error, the error of thinking you are your thoughts, and we’ve got a “workshop” going on inside that is truly devilish. You are not your thoughts. You’re not even the observer of your thoughts, although that is much closer to perhaps who you really are.

Why is this all so important? Because this is the only way to get control of your thoughts. And, if you wish to be happy, and who among us does not wish for this, you must learn to manage the mind. Otherwise, it will menace you like the constant dripping of a leaky faucet.

The problem in our western world is not that we do not know how to think. As enumerated so eloquently by the spiritual teacher Eckhart Tolle in A New Earth, “the problem most people have is not thinking; it is not knowing how to stop thinking.”

Blessed emptying of your mind, my friend. To learn to do so is to learn to better control your mind and thoughts and so find your life to much richer in meaning. Happier, too.

Focus On Distractions

The normal trend when you are trying to remove your mind from certain things like one social error you committed is to get yourself distracted. The human mind will always wander around to search for interesting things to think about, hopefully, this will help leave you with peace of mind.

Distraction is known to work perfectly, but oddly enough, researches have shown that it is better to get yourself distracted with one thing, instead of allowing your mind to keep wandering.

This is due to the fact that a purposeless wandering of the mind goes hand-in-hand with unhappiness; it is always better to focus on, something like, a unique piece of music, a task or a TV program.

Suspend the Thought Until a Later Time

While continuously making efforts to keep a thought suppressed keeps bringing it back and making it stronger, it can help to postpone the thought until a later time.

Researchers have tried to ask those who have persistent anxious thoughts to postpone their worries until about a 30-day worry period. According to some studies, people find this technique as an effective way of suppressing their thoughts effectively.

To save up every one of your worries for a specific period of time and this may help keep your mind stay free from worrying thoughts.

You are your own boss when it comes to how to control your thoughts. Here, you must begin by simply sending a command to yourself to stop!. One direct command issued to yourself with a strong voice tone, will help interrupt the behavior, just like stopping you right in your track.

Store and Share

Storing your thoughts is one of the tips on how to control your thoughts, but it is not all of it. Storing it is not the main aim, but keeping it away until a time when you can re-access it, by sharing your thought with one very supportive friend, a colleague, a mentor or coach. Someone who has an outside view, a very objective view, one who can help you move ahead.

Paradoxical Therapy

Consider this for a while, rather than worrying continuously about. Say, something like imminent death of a loved one, you head right into worrying about death and focus on it.

It appears paradoxical that concentrating on a particular thought might make the thought go away, but some studies show that this works. It depends on the long-founded principle known as the exposure therapy: this is where, for instance, arachnophobes get slowly but definitely exposed to spiders, until their fears start fading away.

This is not the right approach for you if you are faint-hearted, but according to research, it can be quite helpful to rid yourself of every kind of negative thoughts when adopted by people dealing with compulsive behavior and obsessive thoughts.

Acceptance

In a related way, but not directly related, there are proofs that accepting any thoughts you do not want instead of trying to fight them can help you learn how to control your thoughts.

Find Time to Relax

You can either sleep or take a nap, to get your mind freed; you can sleep silently, or while listening to your favorite song, or slot in one relaxation track/CD, or video, with a guide that can help you think of some other thing and relax.

Try to Write About It

Contrary to self-affirmation, engaging in expressive writing-putting down your deepest feelings and thoughts-has been extensively tested and it has several psychological and health benefits (though with very few effects).

Writing about yourself in an emotional way, can help you remove negative thoughts.

Engage In Adequate Meditation

Whenever you find yourself relapsing into some past memories or saying things that are detrimental to your overall well-being, go with the simple steps outlined below:

Find one very quiet spot where no one will distract you, sit down and shut your eyes (If it is easier, you can get your eyes shut).

Bring in all the thoughts that make you feel frustrated or uncomfortable.

Try connecting deeply with your emotions as if it is happening currently, take note of the very place where you feel it, hear it, see it, taste it, smell it.

Once you feel the connection, pretend or imagine stepping away from the experience to see yourself there, like you are viewing yourself on one movie screen.

Use your imagination once you are ready, push the screen away, as far across the room as possible, or across the next door, across the next city, into the river, into an entirely different country! Push it as far away as you can get it away from you to stop seeing it.

Return to the room, ask yourself the color of your front door or engage in some fast jogging exercise right on the spot.

Consult a Professional

Find a good therapist or counselor. If you start feeling overwhelmed by the stream of random thoughts, you can benefit immensely from interacting with a therapist or counselor, in addition to engaging in exercises that are aimed at controlling your thoughts. Look for a trained therapist in Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy. The therapist should help you learn how to gain more effective control over your mind through adequate mind training.

In what I found in the thoughts(?!) of Napoleon Hill about achieving success the basic idea seems to be that if you are able to control your thoughts, your mind, you can control everything, anything.

And somehow until now I am not able to control my thoughts, even though I know that is very important and even though it is high on my priority list and even though I think(!?) a lot about it.

But why should and would I like to control my thoughts? And why is it such an important issue in the Principles of Success? Well, I guess because most humans, or maybe even all, are kind of haunted by negative thoughts, which creates negative feelings and emotions which in the end creates negative outcomes in the real world.

And the basic thing is something like “I think. Therefore I am” as Descartes stated a long, long time ago. And somehow this is true and somehow it’s not, as I presume a stone does not think, but it still is. Or not? Or is it only in the eye of the observer that things exist? Isn’t that what quantum physics says, that ‘things’ only exist if there is an observer. And that if there is no observer there are only waves, there is only energy?

But yes, somehow thinking makes humans unique and makes something like ‘consciousness’ exists. And indeed, somehow everything starts with a ‘thought’. In the end things only even exist because someone is ‘thinking’.

So how to change your thinking, of course only if it’s negative, but somehow it seems like that for most of us, or most of the time for most of us.

Well, some suggestions we found are:

  1. Meditate daily. According dr. Steve McSwain this is a must in order to control our thoughts. And if we believe we can’t meditate, that meditation doesn’t work, that’s the first thought we need to change as it’s not true, as most or all thoughts are not true (limiting beliefs).
  2. Observe your thoughts. And observing means just look at them in a neutral way, don’t judge them. I was once taught that humans are judging machines and they are. Like dividing everything in right and wrong. But right and wrong don’t exist, right and wrong thoughts don’t exist. They’re just thoughts, just things passing by. And it’s our judgment system that’s giving them a value, but that’s no more than “I presume this works because I was taught so or because I had an experience or experiences confirming it works or it’s good for me” or “I presume this doesn’t work because I was taught or because I had an experience or experiences it doesn’t work or it’s bad for me”. So just be the observer, nothing more, nothing less.
  3. Cultivate the space between thoughts. When you start observing and cultivating the space between thoughts you may notice that in that space is the place of “internal peace”. As we are not our thoughts, we are not even the observer. And this is supposedly the core error of our human experience: that we identify ourselves with our thoughts.

And the main problem of our western world seems to be that we don’t know how to think, or actually not knowing how not to think.

Well, the moment I’m writing this, the moment I started this page, actually I could not sleep and realized I was keeping thinking thoughts, negative thoughts, thoughts about the problems in my life, thought about my kind of desperate financial situation, thoughts about the journey I want to make and can’t connect to because it seems too impossible, too far away, unreachable from where I am now, at least too far. And the car I want to have, which I also can’t imagine as I think I ‘should’ in order to get it.

So all limiting thoughts, negative thoughts.

The human brain procedures between 11-60K thoughts daily. The mind is always buzzing about something. And regrettably, most of the ideas are repetitive from the past, afraid of the future or merely absolute rubbish.

How many of these thoughts do you think we understand?

The majority of the repeated thoughts are on automatic; configured into the subconscious mind and beyond your conscious awareness. (The mindful mind can process about 40 little bits of information per second; the subconscious mind can process 40 Million bits of data per second.).

The sheer number of ideas and the unbelievable power of the subconscious mind make one wonder if we are ever in control. Can we control our thoughts? And do we have to control our thoughts?

I don’t think we have to control our thoughts

However, we need to analyze them and develop a mental gate, so negativity doesn’t continue to leak into our subconscious based on previous idea patterns and experiences.

The negativeness was programmed by having thoughts go straight to the subconscious. Gradually, they turn into regular unpleasant beliefs. They can activate emotional reactions before we can process what took place. Recently I’ve been exploring a fun idea that I wish to share with you today. I call it the believing partners.But before I describe the idea in detail, let’s take a look at why I’m recommending it.

Separate ideas from yourself

When you appoint other things to be the bearers of your thoughts, you separate yourself from them. You recognize that you are not your thoughts. They can come and go and you are the same, unless (or till) you think them.

Pay more attention and filter inbound ideas

This is a result of separating yourself from your thoughts. This separation permits you to stop and decide if you wish to believe this idea or not. This can be a significant enhancement from the automated configured action.

Lighten up and don’t take thoughts too seriously

The process is an enjoyable exercise of the imagination. We envision all sorts of things all the time. So why not change our thinking pattern while having a good time?

Ways to create your own thinking sidekicks

Thoughts either support you or they do not. Some can be useful and reliable. Others can be limiting, unfavorable, and damaging. And a lot of thoughts can be merely mental sound, absolutely nothing crucial.

Imagine that you have two sidekicks, one sitting on your right shoulder and the other on your left shoulder. They are your thinking partners, protectors, supporters, or any different name you wish to call them.

The Supporter: On the right-hand side sits a character that’s creative, cool, and supportive. My option is Sonic the Hedgehog. He’s feisty and lively. I chose him since he advises of the fun video games I played in the past.

The Destroyer: On the left side sits a gremlin-like animal. He’s crucial, analytical, and unfavorable. But he’s not actually evil. He doesn’t know any better. My picked character is a demon that nags a lot but is well intended. He wants to support me in his own wacky method.

Thought receivers: When a thought comes through, listen and see which side is informing you this. Is it the Supporter or the destroyer? Is it valuable, harmful, or just nonsense?

This is where you begin to discover

You become more aware of thoughts as they pass by. The idea improves with practice.

Filtering ideas: If the thought is just worthless drivel, picture one (or both) of your sidekicks tossing it away. If it’s helpful, smile and imagine your fan kissing you on the ideal check. Gently touch your right shoulder and thank your supporter.

When an unfavorable thought comes through, do the following

Have a conversation with the partners: This is very important when faced with a new challenge or experience and you think: “This is crap, I can’t do this.” Envision your gremlin/demon whispering these words in your left ear. Mine pokes me with his pitchfork. Often he’s jumping up and down and I need to inform him to settle down.

Stop and smile

  • Ask the demon: Is that so? Exactly what makes you state that?
  • Pay attention to what the evil force states and continue questioning. Your fan can chime in any time as well.
  • Imagine that the 3 of you are conversing about the new idea. There is you (the observer) and your advocate and the noisy unfavorable sidekicks with their arguments.
  • Don’t think of the destroyer as a wicked creature, he/she is more like a delicate dork that wants to secure you at any cost.

After the conversation is over, punch the destroyer by touching your left shoulder and thank him/her for their assistance. And you choose which side to act upon if you have to act at all.

The idea is planned to be fun and speculative

It is not a rigid technique that you either solve or incorrect.
You will not capture every thought this way but you will do far better than absolutely nothing at all. The function is to question the negative and clear it out before it sets in.

The thought gate will help you in stopping thoughts from going straight into actions and emotions. This can be extremely useful.

This experiment deals with the majority of the daily difficulties and thoughts. I don’t think it will operate in emergency situation scenarios. At that point, your level of awareness will be increased by your instincts and you will act without much thought.

Have a good time with it

Taking things too seriously will increase the negativeness, not decrease it. Have fun with the idea and don’t hesitate to act silly and make fun of the whole thing.

This experiment is fun and spirited to guarantee that we don’t deal with a lot of resistance from the old regular patterns.

You will not catch every thought But the more you practice, especially with the unfavorable devastating thoughts, the better you get at it.

Your thoughts are powerful. They affect the choices you make and the person you become. They can keep you up all night, and they can even destroy relationships. Your thoughts can impact your successes, and are key to turning your weaknesses into strengths.

It can be hard to take control of your thoughts. They have a strength that can seem almost impossible to overcome. But, it can be done. Here are four ways you can control your thoughts, and take control of your mind.

1. Identify your thoughts

You create two types of thoughts: positive and negative. You often don’t realize you are thinking one type or another. Unfortunately, you become the thoughts you think. For example, if you constantly dwell on negative thoughts, you will become a pessimistic person. Whereas, if positive thoughts occupy your mind the most, you will be happier and more grateful for the many blessings in your life.

As thoughts come into your mind, identify whether they are positive or negative. If the thought is positive, come back to it often. Dwell on it. If the thought is negative, cast it away. You have the power to keep thoughts or discard them.

2. Introduce positive and empowering thoughts

If you have a difficult time letting positive thoughts occupy your mind, you are not alone. To help you overcome this challenge, introduce positive and empowering thoughts into your mind each day. Find one thing you are good at and focus on it throughout the day. Find three things on which to compliment yourself and focus on that. When you catch a negative thought cross your mind, immediately turn it into something positive.

3. Don’t procrastinate

If a negative thought comes into your mind, cast it out immediately. The more you dwell on the thought, the harder it will be to remove it. One of the challenges to controlling your thoughts is catching yourself with a bad thought. Being a pessimist is a habit that we often don’t realize we practice.

To break this habit, spend two or three days focusing on your thoughts. You can count how many positive or negative thoughts enter your mind. You can write down every positive thought you have. Work now to control your thoughts and cast out those thoughts that tear you down right away.

4. Take care of yourself mentally and physically

Regular physical exercise, a healthy diet and a continual education can help maintain good thoughts. When you are physically fit, you feel better about yourself and the way you look as you slowly eliminate poor critical and destructive thoughts. Also, regular exercise releases endorphins that make you much happier and more energetic. When you continually work your mind and improve yourself mentally, you will feel smarter. You will be able to handle difficult challenges that may come your way.

These questions should make you aware that you have the choice. You are not at the mercy of your feelings, but you are influencing them by your thoughts.

Negative thoughts or feelings may come to you out of the blue, but when they are there, you have the choice whether you stay with them or you change them.

Now ask yourself: How should I or could I feel, to make me feel like I want to feel?

Let’s look at an example.

Suppose you walk through the city, and suddenly something hits you, which makes you stumble.

You turn around annoyed and see a blind kid who had stumbled and fell on you.
What will happen to your anger?
It immediately will disappear in one second. Your anger will blow away, and you feel calm and compassionate.
In this example, you can see how quick feelings can change in an eye blink. You can see that attitudes can change quickly and it does not take days or weeks to react calmly. You can use this fact to change your negative feelings.

Let’s say you want to meet with a friend. He comes half an hour late, and you are annoyed. Now you can decide if you’re going to stay upset all the time or forget and forgive and enjoy the day with him.
You have decided to take the matter calmly; you realize that people are not perfect and that mistakes happen. Making mistakes is human and cannot be avoided.
If you now think about your friend being late and letting you wait for, your rage vanishes. You ask him to be punctual the next time
You transformed you feeling of anger into serenity, composure, by changing your attitude.
By changing your thoughts, you have changed your feelings.

Be conscious and practice this when you have negative thoughts and emotions. You have the power over your mind.

How to Control Your Thoughts in 5 Simple Steps – By Travis Robertson

Step 1 – Learn to Stop Your Thoughts

One of the first things you need to do is to learn to stop in the middle of your thoughts (good, bad, or just boring). At various times throughout the day, catch yourself thinking. How are you feeling? What are you thinking about? Why are you thinking about that topic?

This is much easier said than done. Usually, when you’re feeling frustrated, upset, tired, or angry about something, your tendency will be to “press on” or “fight through” or “get past” whatever it is that you’re feeling. This is not a good strategy.

It’s easier to see this in others than it is in ourselves. If you have kids, think of how dumb your kids become the more frustrated or angry they get. If you don’t have kids, borrow your friend’s kids for a day. If that scares you, think of that guy or gal at the office who is hot-tempered. You’re no more immune to this result than they are.��

Instead of pressing on, take 5 minutes to stop what you’re doing, and think about your thoughts. The next few steps will help.
Step 2 – Identify Your Negative Thoughts

The better you become at stopping your thoughts, the faster this step will become for you. In the meantime, I can give you a tip to make it a little bit easier: begin with how you’re feeling and work backwards. Every feeling we have is the direct result of something we were thinking. Therefore, if you’re feeling anxious, begin by stepping back for a minute, and asking yourself, “Why do I feel anxious?”

��Maybe it’s a project or a meeting you’re dreading. Maybe you have to fire someone on your team or meet with the principal at your child’s school. Figure out what that thing is that’s making you anxious.

��But don’t stop there!

��What about it is making you anxious? Did you previously have a bad experience in a similar situation? Did you miss your last deadline? Did you receive some toxic feedback from your boss? Was it something else? Identify what that root cause is.

��Keep in mind that the event making you anxious is usually just the vehicle your mind is using to create the emotional state – it is rarely the root cause of the emotional state.
Step 3 – Write Out Your Mental Movie or Mental Tape

If you did the last step correctly, you’ll begin to identify the movie, or tape, that is playing in your mind. It could be the meeting in which you were chewed out by your boss. It could be the time you flubbed the presentation or the conference keynote. Maybe it’s the sound of your dad’s voice telling you you’re worthless.��

By default, the majority of people have negative mental movies and tapes that fire off inside of their minds – not positive ones. When a current situation reminds us of a previous situation we tend to replay that movie or tape. Even if we had five successes and one disappointment, it is the disappointment our minds will return to because most of us want to avoid pain more than we want to seek out pleasure.�� (��Tweet this.)

What you need to do is identify what that movie or tape is and write it down. Why? Because you want it out of your head. Inside of your head, it has power and seems much larger than it really is. Written down, it is now outside of your mind and you gain a distance from the emotion that it creates. ��

The term for this is dissociation and writing out your mental tapes is just one form of doing that. It’s also the easiest because it requires nothing more than a pen and a sheet of paper. Dissociating yourself from an event means to remove yourself from the first-person position in the memory.

��If I were to ask you to think of a painful time in your past and to remember it as if it were happening, you would put yourself right back in that situation. It would stir up emotions and you would feel yourself becoming angry, bitter, frustrated, depressed, etc. That is referred to as associating – putting yourself inside of the event. By default, this is how our mental movies play – with us back in the position of pain.

��By writing out your mental movies (what happened, what was said, what was felt, etc.) it removes you from being immediately associated with the pain and allows you to step back and gain a little bit of outside perspective on the situation. My coaching clients often tell me that this simple step usually calms them down in a big way because, getting your tapes out of your mind removes some of their power.
Step 4 – Find the Lie

Behind every negative mental tape is a lie about ourselves that we are choosing to believe whether consciously or subconsciously. A key step is to identify what that lie is. The lie could be that you’re worthless or that you’re a failure or that you’re a nobody. Maybe you were told that you are dumb or that you’ll never find a spouse who will love you. Whatever it is, identify it and write it out next to the mental tape.
Step 5 – Recognize the Truth

The only way to combat a lie is with truth and right now is the time to seek out what the truth about you is. At this stage is where I pray, read my Bible, and ask God to reveal to me the truth about who I am created to be. Your process may be different. I might also talk to Lisa or a close friend about this. I’ve worked with counselors and I work with a coach who can offer me an outsider’s perspective. Whatever route you choose to take, you must determine the truth.

��Once you have the truth ready to go, write the truth next to the lie. Write the truth in the first person and write it in positive phrasing. So, instead of writing, “I am not a failure,” write down, “I am a successful person who has accomplished many great things.”

If you’re looking for a way to stop negative thinking, here is a quick and easy exercise to break the chain and take back control of your thoughts and your mind.

Take Control of Your Thoughts

Thoughts are habits and patterns. No matter what you do, your mind will constantly keep thinking thoughts.

It runs around like a toddler on a sugar rush. However, instead of sugar, the mind gets amped up on emotional energy. It wants to think about something. Anything. The more intense the energy, the more your mind focuses on it.

Unfortunately, negative thoughts tend to have a lot of emotional energy behind them. The more you focus on something negative, the more negative things your mind will come up with to add to the feeding frenzy.

How to Stop Negative Thinking

First Notice

The key is to first notice when you’re in a loop of negative thoughts. Just catch yourself thinking. Every time you realize you’re doing it, stop and notice it.

Say No

You can say it out loud or to yourself, but just say no. Say it calmly without emotion. Don’t get frustrated with your thoughts or with yourself. You’re actually doing fantastic just to be able to recognize it. Just detach from any negative emotions around the thought and say no. Brush it off like you would a speck of dust on your shirt sleeve.

Get Physical

Usually, when you’re thinking negative thoughts, your body language will change. You may be hunched over, frowning, tightening your shoulders or looking down.

To stop negative thinking, you also need to shift the physical portion of the pattern as well. Do something to realign your posture. Take a deep breath, stand up straight and relax the muscles in your face.

Say Yes

Then, once you’ve changed your posture physically, say yes to yourself. By recognizing the thought, saying no and changing your posture, you have successfully completed shifting an old pattern. Congratulate yourself. When you say yes, put a lot of feel-good passion in it. Reinforce this new behavior with positive emotion. It not only helps you to feel better, but also gives you a burst of positive energy.

You’re training your mind and body to shift from one pattern to another by creating a new habit.

But there’s more. Now you need to take back control of your thoughts by giving your mind something constructive to think about.

The easiest way to do this is to ask your mind to help you get something that you want. Think of something you want to do or have – something positive.

For example, how can I add more fun to today? Or what can I do to get healthier today?

Challenge Your Mind

To give your mind even more of a challenge, give it more to think of. For example, what are 5 things that I can do to get healthier over the next week?

Think of the end goal of something that you would like to accomplish, preferably something tangible and easy to visualize. Then ask yourself to come up with specific steps to take to accomplish the goal.

This works best with something that you are excited about or interested in doing. Use something fun or meaningful to you. If you use this to think of ways to do something you dread, you’re just creating more thoughts that are negative and more ways to feel bad.

Put Your Mind to Work

Put your mind to work for you. Your mind wants to think thoughts, any thoughts. Negative thought loops are old habits and patterns. When you change the pattern both mentally and physically, you can then change your thoughts and your emotions.

Don’t be surprised if you begin to notice that you start manifesting even more negative thoughts when you first start to practice this. That just means that it’s working! You’re simply becoming aware of your thought patterns and, with that awareness, comes the power to change them.

Don’t let a few things like old negative thought loops waste any more of your time. Follow these steps to break the habit of negative thoughts.

  • Notice them and just say no.
  • Make a small physical change by adjusting your posture.
  • Reward yourself for noticing and changing your perspective by saying yes.
  • Then put yourself on a better path by giving your mind something positive to work on.

You can stop negative thinking and get rid of old, negative thought patterns. Just practice the exercise, make it a new habit, and you’ll be well on your way to take back control of your thoughts.
