Those pesky toxins are getting into our bodies and making us feel cruddy all day! Unfortunately, few of us take the time to detox ourselves, sitting in years of built-up gunk and metals running wild around our bodies.

Detoxes have been given the image of taking up time and intruding on the daily schedules of our busy selves. However, we drink gallons of it every day and some of us swear by it, yet no one has taken the time to really understand the full power of this everyday substance. I’m talking about tea.

Let’s look at how to detox your body with tea.

Go Green

At one point or another, you’ve probably heard about the magical elixir that is green tea. Filled with endless anti-oxidants, vitamins, and general goodness, it has become a staple part of many gym-goers and health-conscious people’s diets.

Some of the features of Green tea include:

  • Helps burn fat: The anti-oxidant features of the tea help speed up your metabolic rate, resulting in energy being burned, even when not active.
  • Improves immunity: Fights against flu and colds.

This is only just a small list of the benefits green tea offers, but I’ll focus in on a super, duper food that harnesses 10 times the power of normal green tea.

Bring in Japanese Matcha Tea.

Drinking one cup of Matcha tea is equal to 10 cups of green tea, talk about nutritional overload!

Matcha tea is incredibly popular in Japan and is now becoming widely recognized throughout the world for its ability to aid in detox plans and regimes. Some of the key benefits of Matcha tea include:

At this point the flavor takes a tumble so don’t expect anything out of this world. However, if you need to add anything to change the flavor, I recommend adding any of these: stevia (natural sweetener), honey, mulberries, ginger powder, or lemon juice.

Colon Cleanse

It sounds pretty scary but for a full body tea detox it’s essential to rid yourself of the daily build up of toxins, metals, and gunk. Like the morning refresh, the colon cleanse tea should have a key ingredient: senna leaf, which will provide the laxative effect.

The FDA has given their consent for Senna to be used as a natural laxative, so no worries there.

Creating a blend is again vital for increasing the effectiveness of this tea, so I recommend adding some of these ingredients in with your senna leaf:

  • Dried orange peel
  • Dandelion plant
  • Nettle leaf
  • Lemon grass
  • Liquorice root

Not only do they all help to add flavor to the tea, they also increase the effects and benefits of the colon cleanse. Either adding fiber, nutrients, or vitamins, each ingredient should be considered a key part of the detox colon cleanse blend.

Routine

Morning

As soon as you get out of bed, boil water, add lemon slices or juice, and add ginger. This helps with waking up your organs and kick-starting your metabolism.

    20 minutes thereafter, make your morning refresh tea, giving yourself the anti-oxidant, vitamin, and energy boost you need for the rest of the day.

    Day

    Throughout the day drink multiple cups of green tea, either normal green tea or a blend such as green tea with jasmine (3-6 cups as an example). White tea is also acceptable.

    Night

    Step 1 – Food to eat to detox from heavy metals

    First, you need to detoxify your body from heavy metals with a detox diet that contains a lot of vitamin C rich foods.

    Fruits and veggies offer a tremendous amount of antioxidants that have the capacity to reduce the damage from heavy metals.

    Green leafy vegetables are great detoxifiers… Kale, cilantro, parsley, and spinach can help eliminate heavy metals that have accumulated in the body.

    Garlic and onion are rich in sulfur, which encourages liver detoxification and the elimination of toxins.

    You should also include flaxseed and chia seeds in your detox diet because they provide a lot of fibre, which is necessary for the formation of stool and the cleansing of the colon. They are also high in Omega-3 fatty acids and can help reduce inflammation and cognitive damage.

    You should drink water throughout the day to make sure that the toxins are being flushed out.

    Step 2 – Food to avoid to detox from heavy metals

    This step is essential… You need to avoid foods that contain heavy metals in order to detox from them.

    Even if they only contain small quantities, heavy metals accumulate in your body.

    All seafood, wild fish, and farmed fish can contain heavy metals like mercury, dioxins and PCB’s.

    Avoid them. (They also contain microplastic and other pollutants…)

    In our modern days, we grow non-organic fruits and vegetables with fertilizers and we spray them with toxic chemicals. So if you eat those during your detox, they will not help the process of detoxification… It’s best that you choose organic products when possible.

    It’s also best that you avoid processed foods because they contain preservatives, added salt, and industrial sugar. Just like non-organic products, they do not support the detoxification… On the contrary, they intoxicate you.

    Dairy and gluten are common allergens that you should avoid during a heavy metal detox diet. They cause inflammation in your body and weaken your immune system when you need it the most.

    Step 3 – Supplements to detox from heavy metals

    You can take several supplements during your detox to help with the elimination of heavy metals and to reduce the symptoms of detoxification.

    Dandelion root comes as fresh dried or roasted. The root is best used for dandelion tea. When the root is dried, roasted and ground you can make dandelion coffee. You can find directions for harvesting and roasting your own on the internet but it is a bit of a laborious process so you might prefer to buy it.

    Jars of dandelion coffee are not usually pure dandelion. They often have other ingredients as well as dandelion root such as barley, rye, chicory roots and beetroot.

    Dandelion Tea

    To make the dandelion detox tea simmer (with a lid on the pan) 1 part of dried dandelion root with 10 parts of filtered water for 20 minutes then take off heat and leave to steep for another 10 minutes. Strain and drink 1 cup 2 – 5 times a day. You can add herbs such as cinnamon, licorice or ginger to sweeten it.

    Dandelion Coffee

    The roots can be dried and roasted to make dandelion coffee. It is a good substitute if you are trying to cut down on naturally caffeine-free but it does have the bitter flavor that stimulates the liver, bile flow and digestion. A great substitute for normal coffee.

    Dandelion leaves

    Dandelion leaves can be added to any salad. green smoothie or juice. Be warned that the juice is very bitter and potent so you only need to add a small amount of leaves for your juice or smoothie.

    If you pick your own be sure to use leaves that have not been sprayed with pesticides. Smaller leaves are best unless you like bitter herbs as they are milder tasting than the large ones. They are best mixed with milder tasting green salad leaves. Cook the larger leaves as you would spinach.

    Dandelion Salad:

    1 Bunch Dandelion leaves, washed and torn
    1 Bunch Arugula, washed and torn
    1 Head Radicchio, washed and torn
    Some Kale and/or Italian Flat Leaf Parsley
    1 Avocado, peeled, pitted and sliced or cubed
    1 Red Onion, thinly sliced
    Hemp seeds to taste
    Raw Garlic, sliced paper thin
    A few black olives

    Toss altogether and add dressing to taste

    Dressing:

    Olive Oil
    Lemon Juice
    Celtic Sea Salt
    Dulse Flakes (high in minerals with a salty flavor)

    Dandelion Tea from leaves

    Put 1 or 2 teaspoons of well washed crushed leaves in a bowl and pour one cup of boiling water over them. Steep for ten minutes. Strain and drink. If you find the tea too bitter, you can add some orange or apple slices, agave nectar or a little raw organic honey to sweeten it.

    You can use dried leaves too but the fresh leaves are reputed to be more potent.

    Nest time you detox try adding some fresh dandelions to your salads, smoothies and juices and
    drink dandelion tea three times a day.

    Let’s be honest – sometimes finding that real food at a price your family can live with can be difficult. I often consult EWG’s Dirty Dozen list when deciding what produce should be purchased organically. This list really dictates how I shop, as it is updated yearly to show what foods contain the highest levels of pesticides after being washed and prepped for eating. If an ingredient isn’t on this list, I feel better about purchasing the non-organic (often cheaper) version of it.

    I also utilize my Costco membership, which actually has all the ingredients I need to make this tea!     When I make this recipe for the 21-day cleanse, I like to prep it for all 21 days. I know I’m more likely to stick with this habit while cleansing if it’s ready to go each morning. I take an ice cube tray and measure out one serving of this cleansing tea for each rectangle. The tray then goes into the freezer for 1 hour, to freeze each of the cubes. Once frozen, I put them all in a freezer bag and repeat until I’ve got 21 cubes.

    When I wake up in the morning, I heat some water, then add 1 cube to a mug, pouring the hot water over it. This cools down the cube perfectly into the best detox tea. If you aren’t into spicy food, you can omit the cayenne. I often add even more cayenne than the recipe calls for!

    But Don’t Deprive Yourself

But Asay says this type of thinking can be a mistake. “No single food or drink should be considered off-limits,” she says.
