How to disable auto-brightness on your iphone

How to disable auto-brightness on your iphone

Auto-brightness is a feature designed to save battery life and make your iPhone’s screen easier to read. When you’re somewhere dark, like your bedroom at night, the screen will automatically dim. When you’re somewhere bright, like outside on a sunny day, it’ll crank itself up to maximum brightness.

Auto-brightness is generally pretty good at adapting to changing circumstances, and since the screen is one of the biggest battery drainers on your phone, we’d generally recommend leaving it on. However, if you’re someone who prefers to control it manually, or finds it consistently misses the mark when it comes to the brightness you’re looking for, here’s how to turn it off.

Head to Settings > General > Accessibility > Display Accommodations.

Now the screen brightness will remain constant no matter the light level of your location. If you want to change the brightness, swipe up from the bottom of your screen to access the Control Center (which just got a big update in iOS 11) and adjust the brightness slider. Just be careful not to blind yourself with a really bright screen at night!

On most Android phones, you can toggle auto-brightness directly from the notification bar. However, it’s not the same case with iOS. On the latter, you need to dig down deep in Settings to find and turn off the feature. Here’s how you can easily enable or disable auto-brightness on any iPhone running iOS 14.

Enable or Disable Auto-Brightness on iPhone Running iOS 14

Auto-brightness is a convenient feature for people who keep changing the phone’s brightness several times throughout the day. Once enabled, it automatically keeps adjusting the screen’s brightness based on the surroundings using the ambient light sensor near the earpiece.

Now, toggling auto-brightness on iOS isn’t as easy as iPhones. Many of you might already have checked that there’s no such toggle in Settings > Display & Brightness. Instead, Apple has hidden it in the Accessibility tab.

On iOS 13, Apple introduced dark mode, which was carried over to iOS 14. Alongside came another feature called ‘Wallpaper Dimming,’ which is turned on by default on iPhones.

When the dark mode is enabled, ‘Wallpaper Dimming’ automatically darkens the wallpaper based on the ambient light. This helps make the background image easier on the eye. If you’re not aware of the feature, the same may appear to you as an auto-brightness bug.

Anyway, if you see that wallpaper on your iPhone is automatically going dim in low light even while auto-brightness is disabled, you can disable the Wallpaper Diming feature under the Wallpapers section in Settings. Check our detailed guide on how to disable wallpaper dimming on iPhone.

The iPhone has a lot of amazing features that make it an easy sell for most people but it also has some quirks that require extra attention. For instance, when they removed the battery percentage sign from the status bar, I had to find ways around it. Similarly, the iPhone has an auto-brightness feature that is enabled by default and unlike Android smartphones, the option to disable isn’t anywhere in sight. If you’ve been irritated by your screen brightness adjusting automatically, here’s an easy way to turn off auto-brightness on iPhone. Let’s begin.

Why is Auto-Brightness This Finicky?

No, Apple didn’t gloss over this important feature, they just tried to implement a method that makes the brightness adjustment automatic and organic so you don’t notice it that often. However, if you’re unaware of how it works and you’ve been manually adjusting it to your levels and then finding out the iPhone has adjusted the brightness to a different level. It’s by design.

How Does Auto-Brightness Works on iPhone?

The iPhone uses the inbuilt ambient light sensor to adjust the brightness according to your surroundings. So if you’re in a dark room, the iPhone would gradually lower the brightness levels and similarly increase it when you move to a well-lit place.

However, if you set the brightness manually in any setting then the iPhone would only go to that level of brightness. For instance, if you lower the brightness to 20% in a completely dark room, it would never go below that level automatically until you manually adjust that level. Alternatively, if you ramp up the brightness to only 50% under a bright sun, the iPhone would learn to not take the brightness up beyond that point. This would lead to your iPhone brightness going down when you go to a less bright place such as a normal room.

This is why you may find the Auto-Brightness feature irritating as it is lowering the brightness in a well-lit room. Whereas in reality, it is working as intended and you set it to go to 50% brightness in a super bright environment.
