How to group apple tv apps into folders

How to group apple tv apps into folders

By now, you have probably added a lot of apps and games to your Apple TV—so many that your Home screen has become crowded and unwieldy. Grouping things together in folders, however, can quickly restore order.

This method only applies to the 4th Generation Apple TV. Also, make sure tvOS is up to date on your device. The folder feature was added as of version 9.2, but the most current version is 10.1.

Method One: Click and Drag

There are two ways to group apps into folders on Apple TV. The first method may be familiar if you use an iPhone or iPad.

First, choose an app you want to move into a folder. Click and hold the Touch surface on the Siri remote (on older remotes, hold down Select) until the app begins to jiggle.

Next, on the Siri remote, slide your finger on the Touch surface to move the jiggling app over another app until they are grouped together. On older remotes, use the directional buttons.

Finally, release the Touch surface or Select to complete the move and your new folder will be created.

Now that our new folder has been created, we can rename it by swiping up on the Touch surface (or using the up button) until the folder name is selected and the alphabet appears below it.

You can rename a folder by swiping left or right (Siri remote), or use the direction buttons. Just click the Touch surface or Select, to pick each letter in your folder’s name.

With the Siri remote, you can also press and hold the microphone button to dictate the name.

Method Two: Use the Options Menu

The second method of grouping apps requires just a few more steps, but it’s probably a little easier if you have tons of apps on your Home screen.

First, select an app on your Home screen until it jiggles, then press the Play/Pause button.

A menu will then appear with options to delete the app, create a new folder for it, move it to another folder we’ve already created, or cancel the operation.

Next, we select another app until it jiggles, and again press the Play/Pause button. Now, we can move the app into one of our two folders. As you create more folders, you’ll see the locations where you can move your apps.

If you have a lot of stuff on your Home screen, it may take a while to move and sort them all into their respective folders, but as you can see, the result is much more organized and compact.

If you want to break up a folder or move something back to the Home screen, simply follow the opposite procedures. Either click an app within a folder until it jiggles and drag it out, or press Play/Pause and choose “Move to Home screen” (or move it to another folder).

Folders on Apple TV are an excellent way to keep your Home screen in check. Gone are the days of scrolling and hunting for your apps or spending time arranging things in some recognizable order.

Sure, you may have to invest a little time at first to get everything arranged the way your prefer, but once you do, your Home screen will be streamlined and organized.

Today’s hint is tangentially related to OS X, in that it uses iTunes, but it will really be of interest only to Apple TV owners. One of my issues with the Apple TV has been the inability to easily organize my movies, leading to a long list of entries in the My Movies section of the interface. As of Apple TV’s 2.3 software update, however, that problem has been solved. You can now arbitrarily group movies into folders, just by adding a certain tag in iTunes. So instead of seeing the 19 separate entries for your James Bond movies, you can instead see a James Bond folder at the top level. Navigate into that folder on the Apple TV, and you’ll find the individual movies. To me, this makes the My Movies interface a lot cleaner and easier to navigate.

To group your movies on the Apple TV, open iTunes and select the Movies library. Now Command-click on the movies you’d like to group into a folder, and then press Command-I to open the Multiple Item Information dialog. On the Video tab, put the name you’d like to use for your folder–James Bond movies or something similarly inspired–in the Show field, then click OK.

Now re-sync your Apple TV (in the Devices section of iTunes, select the Apple TV and click Sync) and you’re done.

When you go to the My Movies section on your Apple TV, you should see your newly-created show. In the image at right (click it for a larger version), the top half of the image shows the Multiple Item Information dialog, and the bottom shows a (bad) picture of the contents of the folder on my Apple TV.

With this simple change, my Apple TV’s My Movies section no longer feels like an unorganized mess. now it’s an organized mess!

You start with one page of apps. To make a new page, drag an app to the right edge of the screen. You might need to wait a second for the new page to appear. To delete a page, consolidate all your apps to another Home Screen. When there are no apps present the page will delete.

When you have more than one page, a bright dot in a row of dots above the Dock shows you which page you’re on. You can move an app to a different page and create new pages:

When organizing apps on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac, using folders can be quite handy. You can put similar apps together or those you use most often all in one spot. The same can be said for Apple TV. You can easily create folders and add apps to them, move them around, rename them, and even delete those you no longer need. And it works similar to using folders on your other Apple devices.

Here’s how to work with folders on Apple TV for a more organized interface.

You put them into folders

Press and hold an app until it jiggles. Then you can drag ontop of another app, and create a folder for them both. You can name it as you wish.

Apr 20, 2013 11:09 AM

You can put apps into folders on your iPad by pressing and holding one of them for a second or two until they start to shake, and then drag (not too quickly) one of them over another one and hold it there, and you should then get a folder created with those two apps in it – you can then drag further apps into that folder (you can have up to 20 apps in a folder). There is a bit more info in the iPad’s manual about app folders : http://support.apple.com/manuals/ipad/

You can also do it via your computer’s iTunes, by connecting and selecting the iPad on the left-hand sidebar (on iTunes 11 you can enable the sidebar via option-command-S on a Mac, control-S on a PC), and on the right-hand side of iTunes on the Apps using the mini screen mockups to move your apps around the screens and into app folders.

Apr 20, 2013 11:11 AM

I don’t get this at all. I am using itunes 11.02.26 and I never see the App mini screens that all the instructions say I should see. I think I need to move the apps in itunes because I want to group apps on screen 1 and screen 3 and there seems to be no way to move the apps from screen 3 to a folder on screen 1. Can you help me do this in either itunes of on the ipod tough 5g?

Apr 28, 2013 6:30 PM

You can do it directly on the ipad, but it takes the right touch and some practice. It would be easier via itunes on the computer.

When you connect the ipad to your computer and open itunes, do you see the side bar on left hand side, with the categories listed? (library, store, devices, genius)

Your ipad should show up under the heading ‘devices’.

Click on the name of the ipad, it should open the ‘summary’ screen.

One there. click on ‘apps’ from withing the listed headings accross the top of the screen.

From there you can move your apps between the different screens and create folders.

Thanks this solved my problem. For some reason yesterday when I had the iPod linked to the PC I got no device selection in iTunes. Today it was there and I did my editing as all the instructions indicated. Thanks again.

Apr 29, 2013 7:23 AM

Like any external device, sometimes don’t connect the first time. Unplugging the connecting again often resolves this.

Happy you got it to work

I’m sort of interested in this thread. Especially when I saw this from King Penguin:

You can also do it via your computer’s iTunes, by connecting and selecting the iPad on the left-hand sidebar (on iTunes 11 you can enable the sidebar via option-command-S on a Mac, control-S on a PC), and on the right-hand side of iTunes on the Apps using the mini screen mockups to move your apps around the screens and into app folders.

So I’ve done this on more that one occasion – arranged the apps using iTunes, but when I sync the iPad, the apps on the device are still on the same place as they were before the sync.

I’m having a problem with my device that’s preventing me from moving them around on the device. It seems to be ‘dead’ on a portion of the left side and as a result I’m unable to move the apps/folders from page to page.

I thought that arranging the apps using iTunes would be a good work around.

Any suggestions for troubleshooting the iTunes issues. I’ll eventually take the iPad to have it serviced to check out the problem on the left side.

I’m sure this has been asked but I can’t find the answer.

I am using Windows 10 64bit. I have the latest version of iTunes. I recently ordered an Ipad Air 2 and I am trying to prepare iTunes for when it arrives. This will be my first Apple product and first experience with iTunes.

I have had little issue with my music collection importing. The problem I have is organizing my home videos. Over the years I have organized and renamed various folders of home videos shot on a variety of devices, such as digital cameras and cell phones. I am able to import the videos, but they just appear as a list. They are already organized into folders and subfolders on my desktop. I have tried consolidating, using genres, renaming the files before importing, but I cannot figure out how to make separate folders for them.

I need folders for family, friends, vacation, concert, etc. My goal is that I can take my Ipad to various functions and get togethers and show people the pics and movies. I would just like to load iTunes, select a folder, and see a list of the contained files.

I do not physically have the Ipad yet, so if this is something I need to do specifically on the device, I will wait for it to arrive. My understanding is that iTunes will sync with the Ipad when I get it, so I would need to do this anyway. Just trying to get prepared ahead of time.

Would it be easier to use a third party app for videos?

The quickest way is to reset the home screen layout. This will arrange 3rd party apps alphabetically, deleting the folders, and put the stock iOS apps in their original positions.

Settings > General > Reset > Reset Home Screen Layout.

When you say ‘ungroup’ I presume you mean separate them out of their grouped folders.

There are two ways to deal with this. You can do it on the iPhone itself or you can do it from within iTunes.

To do this from within iTunes:

Plug the iPhone into your PC or Mac using the supplied dock connector cable.

Select the iPhone in the sidebar on the left. Select the Apps tab in the main part of the window. You will see a list of your installed apps and a representation of what your iPhone’s screens look like.

Double click on the group folders. Now you can click and drag the app icons out of the folders. You can even drag any app icon in any order that you want to customize the arrangement.

When you’re done click on the sync button to send these changes to your iPhone.

To do this on your iPhone:

Hold your finger down on any app icon until they all start to wiggle. At this point you can hold your finger down on the icons and drag them around the screen to re-arrange them.

For the ones in folders, tap on the folder. you can now drag those icons out of the folders on to the main screen. Once you’ve dragged them all out of folders you can continue to drag them around in any order you choose.

Once you are satisfied with their placement, hit the home button to stop the wiggle. Your now ready to continue to use your iPhone.

The App Library in iOS 14 organizes your iPhone apps so you know where and how to find them.

How to group apple tv apps into folders

Keeping track of your iPhone apps can be a challenge. Creating and maintaining folders to house your apps is time-consuming, but going without folders entirely will lead to disorganized screens with no easy way to find the apps you want.

With iOS 14, Apple has introduced a new feature known as the App Library, which tries to intelligently organize different apps into folders based on categories, such as suggested apps, recently added apps, social, entertainment, shopping, travel, and games.

You can swipe your way to the App Library to find and open a specific app based on its category. You can also search for apps within the App Folder Library and browse all your apps alphabetically. Apps in the App Library can be moved to the home screen or deleted entirely, but they cannot be moved from one folder to another. Here’s how it works.

Update to iOS 14

First, you’ll want to update your iPhone to iOS 14 or higher if you haven’t already done so. On your phone, go to Settings > General > Software Update. Your phone will either indicate that your software is up to date or it will prompt you to download and install the latest update.

Open the App Library

Once iOS 14 is installed, open to the home screen and keep swiping to the left until you bump into the App Library screen. Here, you’ll see various folders with your apps neatly organized and tucked into each one based on the most fitting category.

Notice that some of the apps have large icons and other smaller icons are together in groups of four. Swipe down the screen to view all the folders.

To open an app that has a large icon, just tap it. If you want to open an app that has a small icon, tap anywhere in the app’s quadrant of four icons to bring up a screen displaying all of the apps in that category. From there, simply tap an icon to open the corresponding app.

Search for Apps

If you’re having trouble finding a specific app, you can browse or search for it. Swipe down on the App Library screen. You’ll see an alphabetical list of all the apps on your phone. Swipe down the screen to view the entire list. A quicker option may be to tap a letter on the right-hand side to see all apps starting with that letter.

Alternatively, start typing the name of the app you want in the App Library search field at the top to see the corresponding apps. Tap the icon for the app you wish to launch.

Delete Apps

You can delete any app in the library by pressing down on an app icon. Tap the Delete App command to delete it, then confirm the deletion. Note that this doesn’t just remove the app from the App Library; it actually deletes the app from your phone, so be careful with this option.

Add Apps to Home Screen

You can add an app from the App Library to your home screen if it’s not already there. If that’s the case, tap the icon to open the command menu, then tap Add to home screen. The app’s icon appears on the next free spot on your home screen but also remains in the App Library.
