How to install brushes in photoshop

Digital artists shouldn’t be limited to a single on-screen cursor any more than physical painters should be restricted to a single paintbrush. Photoshop brushes open up endless possibilities for both photo editing and digital art, from adding texture to creating a digital watercolor from a blank canvas.

Adobe has hundreds of Photoshop brushes that are included with a Creative Cloud subscription, but most of them don’t come pre-installed. Here’s how to find and install Photoshop brushes.

How to find free Photoshop brushes

How to install brushes in photoshop

While there are plenty of great third-party Photoshop brush packs out there, you should explore what’s already included in the Creative Cloud subscription before you buy additional brushes. Adobe has created Photoshop brushes from real paintbrushes, and now offers several different brush packs created by artist Kyle T. Webster.

To access the brushes, start in Photoshop’s brush panel (from the menu, navigate to Windows > Brushes). In the flyout menu in the upper right corner of the panel (which looks like four horizontal lines), select “get more brushes.” This will take you to the Creative Cloud brush portal, where you can browse and download all manner of brushes.

Technically, these brushes aren’t “free” since you’re paying for them as part of your Creative Cloud subscription, but at least you don’t have to pull out your debit card again.

Installing Photoshop brushes

1. Access the brush panel

Start again in the brush panel and click on the brush tab (not the brush settings), if it’s not selected already.

How to install brushes in photoshop

2. Find and upload brushes

In the brush panel, click on the flyout menu (the button with the horizontal lines). Choose “Import Brushes.” In the pop-up window, locate your downloaded brushes and click okay.

How to install brushes in photoshop

3. Organize your brushes

Brush packs are often organized in folders. Once a brush pack has been loaded, look for a folder in the brushes panel by the same name.

Installing new brushes may leave you with an overwhelming number of them. To organize your new brushes, simply drag and drop to re-order. Use the folder icon at the bottom to create a new folder, such as a favorites folder, then drag and drop brushes to the new folder for easy access later.

Using Photoshop brushes

You can see a preview of each brush to help you find the one that’s best for your project. To see bigger brush previews, use the slider at the bottom of the brush panel to increase the icon size.

Some brushes aren’t your typical paintbrush. Look in the upper right corner of a brush and an icon will alert you to its type. The paintbrush icon signals a standard brush, while the hand icon designates a smudge brush, for example.

Along with the standard options like the shape, size, and color, you can access additional settings in the brush settings panel. Here, you can adjust things like scatter and texture.

When it comes to Photoshop brushes, the only limitations are your own imagination. There’s a brush for virtually anything — and if you can’t find one that’s perfect for what you need, you can even create your own. But that’s a story for another time.

How to install brushes in photoshop

You’ve just grabbed yourself a sweet texture pack (if it’s not this one, then you’re missing out) and you’re excited to get going, but wait – what on earth is an .ABR file? Well, that’s a Photoshop Brushes file. Installing them is super quick and easy and you’ll be ready in no time. Follow these simple steps to realize your textured dreams.

Locate the .ABR files

You can either find these by their file extension, or by their icon. Depending on what version of Photoshop you have installed, they will look like one of the files below.

How to install brushes in photoshop

Install the brushes

You can either drag the .ABR file(s) directly into Photoshop, alternatively, you can go to Edit > Presets > Preset Manager, select Brushes from the dropdown menu, and then add your brushes using the “Load” button.

If, for whatever reason, you have reached the end of this guide and have just noticed; “Crap, I don’t actually have any brushes, what am I doing here?” Then allow me to introduce you to my Assorted Paint Texture collection, also, I have some free photoshop brushes that you can download here for a test drive 😉

You can Install Brushes In Photoshop Elements. This step-by-step tutorial will show you how.

Watch the video below to see how to do it. Under the video there is a summary of the steps for you to refer to.

STEP ONE – Download Some Brushes

  • There are lots of free brushes available on the internet.
  • Make sure you only download brushes from a website that you trust.
  • Also make sure that you follow their terms of use.
  • I found this resource through Adobe’s website so I felt that it was credible:

I recommend that you create a new folder on your computer and name it “PS Elements Extra Brushes” or some other descriptive name so that you know what’s inside the folder.

Move any Brush sets that you download into that folder.

STEP TWO – Uncompress The File

  • When I downloaded the Brushes above, they were compressed in a .zip file. This is what it looked like on my computer after downloading it.
  • I just double-clicked the ‘zip’ file and the .abr file appeared.
  • I usually delete the ‘zip’ file once I unarchive it and I have the ‘abr’ file.

STEP THREE – Move The abr File To The
Brushes Folder

When you originally installed Photoshop Elements, several files and folders were automatically added to your computer as part of the program.

The Brushes Folder is one of those folders. And that’s where you want to put your new Brush (abr) File. That’s how you install brushes in Photoshop Elements.

Look at the 3 paths to the Brushes Folder below and find the path for the version of PSE that you have and the type of computer that you are using.

  1. This is the Path to the Brushes Folder on a Mac
for PSE 10 and PSE 11:
    Applications >Adobe Photoshop Elements (Version #) >Support Files >Presets >Brushes
  2. Here’s the Path to the Brushes Folder on a Mac
for Versions Before PSE 10 (PSE 9 and Older) :
    Applications >Adobe Photoshop Elements (Version #) >Presets >Brushes
  3. This is the Path to the Brushes Folder on a PC :
    C: >Program Files >Adobe >Photoshop Elements (Version #) >Presets >Brushes

Open your Brushes Folder and you will see all of the abr files that came with Photoshop Elements.

In a new window , open the new folder that you created in Step 1 ( “PS Elements Extra Brushes“).

Now just drag the new Brush File from the Extra Brushes folder to the Brushes folder for Elements.

How to install brushes in photoshop

STEP FOUR – Restart Photoshop Elements

How to install brushes in photoshop

The new Brush Set won’t be available in Photoshop Elements yet.

That’s because the Brushes are loaded from the Brushes Folder into PSE when you start up the program.

Since we added the new set to the Brushes Folder after Elements was already launched, it hasn’t loaded our new set.

So quit out of PSE by pressing Command-Q on a Mac or Control-Q if you’re on a PC.

Now restart Elements and our new Brush Set will be added as Elements starts up and loads the Brushes from the Brushes Folder.

Now when you look in the Brush Set drop-down menu you’ll see the new Brush Set available to use.

Try Shutterstock Editor, the easy and efficient design application.

Apart from Photoshop’s built-in selection of drawing tools, the advanced software allows you to import brushes from outside sources as well. Learning how to install brushes in Photoshop is easy. You just need to download the files to your computer, and then add them to the program’s current collection. Below, we’ve outlined the three major steps for importing new brushes.

Need images for your project? Shutterstock’s impressive collection of more than 70 million images can help! See what our library has to offer.

Downloading Brushes

First, you’ll need to find a quality source for brushes online. Sites like Creative Market and DeviantArt have a wide variety of compelling brush packs. It’s easier to search for a specific brush style (i.e. textured brushes), but typing “Photoshop brush download” into Google will also yield thousands of results.

When you’ve found some unique brushes, just download them to your hard drive. If there are multiple brushes in a pack, they will probably come in a .zip file format, so make sure to unzip the file before trying to import it. This can be done with a program like Zipeg or Zip Archive.

Your unzipped folder should have some .abr files inside. This is the specific extension for brush files. If you don’t see any, you might have downloaded a brush set that is not compatible with Photoshop.

How to Install Brushes in Photoshop

Open the Photoshop program to add your new brushes. We recommend storing the .abr files somewhere within the Photoshop folder, or in your Pictures archive, so you know where to find them.

Next, click on the Brush tool (or press B) located on the main toolbar. Depending on which tool you’ve selected, the top row of toolbar functions will change. Click on the downward arrow in the top left corner to bring up a Brushes Preset menu, and then click on the gear-shaped icon.

Now, a new menu called the Preset Manager will appear. This shows all of your current brush presets. To load new brushes, select the “Load…” button and find the new .abr files you want to import. You can also drag the .abr files directly into the Preset Manager window.

Importing Multiple Brushes
If you’d like to add a bundle of .abr files at the same time, you can drop them directly into Photoshop’s Brushes folder. Make sure the program is closed, and then use Windows Explorer or Mac Finder to locate the Adobe Photoshop folder. For Windows users, this should be in C: > Program Files > Adobe. For Mac users, you’ll find it in Users > Library > Application Support > Adobe.

Once you’ve located the Adobe Photoshop folder, click “Presets” and then “Brushes”. Here, you’ll find all of Photoshop’s current brush presets. It’s easy to add new brush files — just highlight and drag them into the folder. When you open Photoshop, you’ll see all of the new brushes in the preset menu.

Just a couple years ago I considered Photoshop a tool for photographers, web designers creating html templates and those who don’t own an Illustrator license. Yep, I was a douchebag and a convinced vector chauvinist. However, the main reason of me avoiding Photoshop was my extremely old PC. I avoided it as long as I could using simpler and less memory-consuming tools instead (Paint.NET and even MS Paint for minor corrections).

But the last update of Photoshop CC made me surrender to the power of this graphic editing software, its flexibility and perfect compatibility with Illustrator (which is still my primary design tool). What really impressed me is the versatility of Photoshop brushes and the ways they can be used.

In this quick tutorial I will explain you what Photoshop brushes are, where to download and how to install them.

What Kinds of Photoshop Brushes Are There?

Structurally, all Photoshop brushes are all the same, but there are many variations suitable for many different situations.

  • Artistic brushes for drawing. Typically, these are dense brushes with a consistent flow that can be used for painting continuous lines.
  • Large brushes for filling large areas with a texture. These are applied by clicking the canvas once or several times. They are not recommended for dragging across your design, as their texture will become smudged.
  • Scatter brushes for adding accents to design works. These are smaller that texture brushes, but you can use them the same way as the latter.
  • Object brushes for placing objects easily – raster images converted to a brush file format for the ease of use.

How to Install Photoshop Brushes?

For this tutorial we will use the set of free Grunge brushes by Mixedgraph, which can be downloaded from the author’s website. The set contains 5 gritty and halftone brushes packed into one ABR file – just what we need for our test drive.

How to install brushes in photoshop

There are several ways of installing Photoshop brushes.

  1. The first way is to simply drag your ABR file to the Photoshop window (not the opened file) and drop it there.
  2. The second way requires some extra steps, but the result will be the same.
  • Open Photoshop;
  • Go to Edit – Presets – Preset Manager;
  • In the Preset Manager, choose the Brushes tab;

How to install brushes in photoshop

  • Choose the .ABR file with the brushes of your choice and press Load.

That’s it. All of the brushes in that ABR file are now in your brush library. They will be available next time you open Photoshop, and you don’t need to save or export them anymore.

How to Use and Fine-tune Them?

Your brushes will be inactive until you select the Brush Tool. Click on it – and you will be able to choose any brush preset from your collection and draw with it.

Tip: If you don’t see this button, click Window – Brush and enable the toolset.

There are two tabs related to brushes – Brushes and Brush Presets.

  • The Brush Presets tab is your working palette. They include all the brush settings and are ready to use.

How to install brushes in photoshop

  • The Brushes tab allows you to fine-tune various options and requires some skill and experience.

Photoshop provides plethora of options for fine-tuning the appearance and the behavior of your brushes. To browse them all go to the Brush Tab in the right sidebar of Photoshop.

The parameter that you will probably change the most often is the size of your brush. It is located on the main page of the Brush tab.

How to install brushes in photoshop

Another cool modifier is the Angle Jitter (the Shape Dynamics tab). Enabling this option will allow the brush to change its angle with each application, thus making the final result more chaotic and natural looking.

How to install brushes in photoshop

Other options affect the appearance of the brush: its smoothness, the amount of noise, textures, etc. By playing with them you will be able to create absolutely new visual effects.

Where to Get More Photoshop Brushes?

As any digital product, Photoshop brushes are represented by free and paid specimen. Free brushes can be found in abundance on DeviantArt, Dribbble, Behance and Brusheezy. Paid brush packs can be found on Creative Market, MasterBundles, The Hungry JPEG and other design marketplaces and deals websites.

Typically, packs of premium brushes are larger, more professionally made. They also often include bonus assets such as textures and actions. But there are pleasant exceptions. For example, the aforementioned Grunge Brushes by Mixedgraph offer premium quality, yet are absolutely free for personal and commercial use.

Wrapping Up

Brushes are awesome because they are a design multi-tool, and allow you to apply many kinds of effects and potentially replace a whole bunch of specialized tools. If you are an absolute beginner mastering brushes (along with layer masks and blending options) will give you a great launch pad in learning Photoshop.
