Apple makes it easy to download an app or to rent a movie on your iPhone or iPad. But what if you want to change the default password behavior for App Store and iTunes Store? Here’s how to manage your password preferences.

Turn off Touch ID and Face ID for App Store and iTunes Store

If you’re using any modern iPhone with Touch ID or Face ID, you won’t be prompted to set your password preference in the App Store app. Touch ID and Face ID will override your previous preferences (if any).

As such, if you don’t want to be prompted for authentication for buying apps, you’ll still get a Touch ID or Face ID prompt. The only way to access those password management settings is to first disable Touch ID or Face ID authentication for the App Store and iTunes Store.

To do this, open the “Settings” app and go to the “Face ID & Passcode” or “Touch ID & Passcode” section, depending on your device.

From the next screen, enter your lockscreen passcode to authenticate.

Here, tap on the toggle next to “iTunes & App Store” to disable Face ID or Touch ID authentication for App Store and iTunes Store.

Once you do this, Face ID and Touch ID will be disabled for the App Store and iTunes Store. You’ll have to enter the password every time you buy and download apps. You can learn how to configure those settings in the section below.

Manage Password Preferences for App Store and iTunes Store

Once Face ID or Touch ID authentication is disabled, a whole new Password Preferences section will be unlocked. To find this, go to the top of the Settings app and tap on your name.

Here, select the “iTunes & App Store” option.

Tap on the newly unlocked “Password Settings” item.

You’ll now see two sections. In the “Purchases and In-App Purchases” section, you can switch to the “Require After 15 Minutes” option to stop the App Store from asking you for your password or verification every time you buy an app or an in-app purchase (until 15 minutes passes).

In the “Free Downloads” section, you’ll find the “Require Password” feature. You can disable it If you don’t want to be prompted for a password every time you download a free item.

Once you’ve configured the settings to your liking, just go back and start using the App Store and iTunes Store to download apps and make purchases. You won’t receive prompts to use Face ID or Touch ID anymore.

All of your iTunes purchases are available on all of your supported devices, as long as you are signed into them with the same Apple ID. You can also automatically have all of those apps downloaded onto every other supported device that you own, too. Sometimes, that can get a little overwhelming and you may want to shut that down. Here’s how to enable or disable automatic downloads and updates, and how to make changes to your payment information or unsubscribe to services.

How to enable or disable automatic downloads on your iPhone and iPad

With automatic downloads, every app, eBook, audiobook, and song you download on one device will automatically download on all others with the feature enabled. It can be a huge time saver if you know you’re going to want to use or access any of that content across multiple iOS devices.

  1. Launch the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Tap iTunes & App Stores.

Toggle the Music, Apps, and Books & Audiobooks switch on.

You may not like the idea of all of your content just showing up on every other device, especially if one of them has less storage than the other. To disable automatic downloads, follow the same steps and toggle the switches off.

How to enable or disable automatic updates on your iPhone and iPad

Instead of manually updating each and every app that gets updated (which can really be time-consuming when there is a big iOS update), you can automatically download updates as they appear.

  1. Launch the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Tap iTunes & App Stores.

Toggle the Updates switch on.

You may not want all of your apps to automatically update, especially if you’re on an older version of iOS. Your favorite app might not support the version of iOS you’re on. To disable automatic app updates, follow the same steps and toggle the switch off.

How to switch iTunes accounts on your iPhone and iPad

Most people are not going to need more than one iTunes account assigned to a single iPhone or iPad. That doesn’t mean it isn’t possible to do, though. You may work somewhere that the company wants you to use its account to download apps to your device, but you also want to use your own apps. If you need to switch between iTunes accounts, you can. Just remember that you’ll have to switch back to the other account each time you need to update or download an app.

  1. Launch the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Tap iTunes & App Stores.

Tap on your Apple ID.

Tap Sign In. If the Apple ID has never been used in the iTunes Store, you’ll be prompted to review your account information.

How to customize your iTunes account details on your iPhone and iPad

You may need to change your payment information, manage your subscriptions, or view your gifts and app store rating activities. You can access and change this information right on your iPhone or iPad. If you need to make changes to your Apple ID, you’ll be redirected to appleid.apple.com. Otherwise, make the changes in the Settings app.

  1. Launch the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Tap iTunes & App Stores.

Tap on your Apple ID.

Tap Payment Information to change your billing address or credit card information.

Tap Ratings and Reviews to see which apps you’ve rated. You can swipe to the left to remove a rating or review for an app.

Tap Remove This Device to disconnect your account from having its content stored in iCloud (I don’t recommend this, especially if you don’t back up your device via iTunes).

Tap Privacy Policy to view Apple’s privacy policy.

How to deauthorize a device associated with your iTunes account on iPhone and iPad

You can have up to 10 devices associated with your Apple ID and iTunes account. You’d be surprised at how fast you get up to 10 (I have 8 active devices). If you have an older device that you don’t use anymore, you can de-authorize it, clearing up room for a new device you’d like to add.

You can’t actually view a list of devices associated with your iTunes account on your iPhone or iPad. To see that, you’ll have to log in via iTunes on your computer. You can, however, de-authorize an iPhone or iPad right on the device.

  1. Launch the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Tap your Apple ID banner.

Tap iTunes & App Store.

Tap Remove This Device.

If you wish to re-enable the device, enable Automatic Downloads again or download a previously-purchased app.

Do you have any questions about managing your iTunes account? Put them in the comments and we’ll help you out.

Updated September 2017: Made sure everything is up-to-date for iOS 11.

You are probably aware that you can disable password prompts altogether for free downloads made on your iPhone, iPod touch, iPad and Mac. As an added layer of protection, iOS and macOS will either require your Apple ID password for each paid download or after fifteen minutes of making your last purchases in the iTunes Store, App Store, Books Store or Mac App Store, depending on your preference.

What you cannot do on iOS and macOS is disable password prompts for both free and paid downloads. On the Apple TV, however, it’s possible to turn off password protection for both free and paid items and this tutorial will help you do just that.

How to turn off password prompts on 4th generation Apple TV

Step 1: On your Apple TV, go to Settings → Users and Accounts and select your account.

Step 2: In the section labeled Require Password, click Purchases.

Step 3: Now set your preferred level of protection to Never. You can also choose to be reminded to Always enter password for purchases or After 15 Minutes.

Step 4: If you choose an option other than Never above, also select Free Downloads section and choose No to turn off password prompts when downloading free apps from the App Store.

Tip: If you set Require Password to Never in step 3, there won’t be an option to turn this setting on.

How to turn off password prompts on 2nd or 3rd generation Apple TV

Step 1: On your Apple TV, go to the Settings → iTunes Store → Sign In section and sign in with your Apple ID and password. If you already are signed in, sign out and then follow the steps in this section to change your password settings.

Step 2: You should now see a screen that offers you to remember the password.

Choosing “Yes” remembers the password for purchases as long as you’re signed in with your Apple ID. Setting your level of protection to “No” will require your password each time you purchase television shows or movies on the device.

Though you can disable password prompts for free items in iOS and macOS, you cannot completely turn off password protection for paid downloads on these platforms.

As a refresher, related password settings can be found on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch under Settings > Apple ID > iTunes & App Store > Password Settings.

If Touch ID is enabled for App Store purchases, you won’t see this menu so manage these features in Settings > Apple ID > iTunes & App Store > Apple ID. Select View Apple ID, tap your Apple ID, and then head directly to the Apple ID website to make your change.

On your Mac or PC, your preferred level of password protection when downloading apps and media is managed under the Purchases and Free Downloads sub-sections within the Store tab of iTunes’ Preferences, as shown above.

Android Pie: how to enable dark mode

With a single Apple ID, you can authorize up to 5 computers to seamlessly access all your music, movies, and other content from the iTunes Store across devices. So no matter what trusted computer you have, you can stream your favorite movies and listen to curated playlists without having to hop from one device to another. But now that Apple has shut down iTunes in macOS Catalina, how do you authorize your Mac? The tech giant has ensured that killing iTunes has no effect on all related functions, including this important function. So, whether you’re willing to license one of your Macs to access your entire jukebox, or plan to sell/give away or service your computer, watch as I show you how to authorize or deauthorize your Mac for iTunes Store purchases on macOS. Catalina is flawless.

Authorize or Deauthorize Mac for iTunes Store Purchases in macOS Catalina

To begin, I would like to tell you about the whole process so that you have a good grasp at the beginning.

So, Will The Entire Process Work Without iTunes?

First, we’ll show you the iTunes Store. Yes, you heard right! Apple has kept the media library a bit overlooked, but you can easily make it show up in the stock music app. When this is done, it’s business as usual as always. Now that everything is crystal clear, let’s get straight to the step-by-step casting!

Show iTunes Store in Music App on macOS

  1. Start music app on your Mac.

2. Now, click on music menu and Select Preferences

3. General tab is selected. Then check the box To show located on the left iTunes Store. After that, click on OK to finish.

From now on, the iTunes Store will appear in the sidebar of the music app. So you can access all your content. If you want to hide it, go back to Music preferences and uncheck the iTunes Store box at the end.

Authorize or Deauthorize a Mac from the iTunes Store

  1. Start Music application on your Mac.

2. Now, click on Account menu and select Powers.

3. Next, you have two options:

Authorize This Computer: Select if you want to authorize this macOS device. At that time, Enter your Apple ID and password. After that, click on Authorize to approve.

Deauthorize This Computer: Select to deauthorize this macOS device. At that time, Sign in to your Apple ID and click on deauthorize to finish.

View All Your Authorized Computers in macOS Catalina

You can also view all your authorized computers directly from the music app. Make sure you’re signed in to your account.

  1. Open music app on your Mac. Then click on Account menu and select View My Account.

2. You may now be prompted to sign in using your Apple ID. Do.

On Account Information pagego to Apple ID summary section. Now, check number of computers You have authorized it with your Apple ID.

Note that this section will not appear if you have not authorized two or more computers.

Deauthorize All Computers

Just in case, if you no longer use the computers you previously authorized, you can deauthorize them all at once. To do this, click on Deauthorize All Select on the account information page and confirm.

Note: macOS Catalina also lets you see your authorized computers from the Apple TV and Apple Books apps. The process is quite similar.

Easily Manage Your Mac Authorized for iTunes Store

So this is the right way to manage all authorized Macs for iTunes Store purchases. While the new music app isn’t as versatile as iTunes, it makes the exercise of music management effortless thanks to a largely clutter-free interface. It also simplifies the process of importing songs. Not to mention the options to hide Apple Music and even access the top 25 most played music that might appeal to those who aren’t fans of Apple’s streaming service. By the way, do you have any questions? Throw it in the comments section below.

In an earlier post, we covered how to change the email ID associated with your Apple account. That’s easy. And in most cases, that won’t change much of the content you purchased/own/installed/downloaded.

Now, let’s see how you can change your iCloud email ID right on your iPhone/iPad. Note that this is vastly different from changing your email ID attached to your Apple account. In this, you’ve got to be careful about “content” – apps, music/video purchases, TV shows, books and more.

How to Change iCloud, iTunes, and App Store Email on iPhone and iPad

Change the iCloud email on your iPhone

Step #1. Open the Settings App.

Step #2. Scroll down and tap on iCloud → Tap on Sign out.

Step #3. Tap on Sign Out again in Popup Menu Tap on Delete from iPhone.

Step #4. Tap on Keep on My iPhone or Delete from My iPhone up next enter your password for Apple ID.

Step #5. Go to Settings again → Tap on iCloud → Tap on Create a New Apple ID.

What happens when you change the iCloud email ID?

First off, all sync’d data is gone from the iPhone. All that data is safely stored on your iCloud account (Apple’s server) so there’s no reason to panic or worry. But yes, much of the data that comes from your iCloud account will be gone.

This includes, as may be the case:

  • Mail
  • Contacts
  • Calendar data
  • Photos
  • iBooks Purchases
  • Documents (that you sync to your iCloud account)
  • Change the iTunes/App Store account on your iPhone

It is generally not advised to change your iTunes and App Store account when you use your iPhone/iPad.

Doing this will kind of change a lot of things, remove a lot of purchases and apps when you try to sync or reset. Nevertheless, if you really want to change your iTunes and App Store account, here’s how to proceed:

Step #1. Open Settings

Step #2. Scroll down and tap on iTunes & App Store.

Step #3. Tap on the account email.

Step #4. Then tap on Sign Out.

Next up, sign in with the new email ID that you want to associate with your iTunes/App Store purchases.

As such, apps and purchases that you’ve downloaded/purchased will stay on your iPhone/iPad. But when you try to restore previous purchases, that will cause a) conflict or b) you won’t see the apps that you purchased previously because you’ve changed the account.

Face ID lets you authenticate any purchases made in iTunes Store, App Store or iBooks Store, which permits you to buy apps and media with a simple glance.

Before you can start using this handy feature, you must make sure that the option to authenticate purchases with Face ID has been enabled in Settings.

1) Launch the Settings app on your iPhone X.

2) Tap Face ID & Passcode in the list.

3) When prompted, type in your passcode. Next, slide the switch labeled iTunes & App Store underneath the Use Face ID For heading to the ON position.

This will let you use Face ID to authenticate purchases with Apple Pay and in Apple’s content stores: iTunes Store, App Store and iBooks Store.

4) Now launch the iTunes Store, App Store or iBooks app on your device and navigate to a piece of content you’d like to buy, then tap its price or the Get button for free apps and content.

Tip: To abandon your purchase, tap Cancel in the app sheet.

5) When prompted to pay, double-click the Side button on the right side of the device then look at the TrueDepth camera of your iPhone X to finish the transaction.

Note: You might be asked to enter your Apple ID password for the first purchase you make in the iTunes Store, App Store or iBooks Store.

For consistency’s sake, the same method is used to make an Apple Pay purchase with Face ID in a store or an app: you just double-click the Side button to initiate the Face ID scan, then authenticate your Apple Pay transaction with a glance.

On the desktop, changing your iTunes or App Store region is as simple as scrolling down, clicking on the current country flag icon and then choosing a new country flag. On iPhone and iPad, not so much. It’s still possible to change store locality, it’s just not as easy. If you really want or need to change, here’s how!

How to change your local iTunes Store and App Store country

If you’re moving or otherwise want to change your iTunes Store and App Store at least semi-permanently, here’s what to do.

Note: If you have subscriptions to Apple Music, iTunes Match, or another service attached to your local Apple ID, you’ll need to cancel those first, then re-sign after you’ve switched over.

  1. Launch Settings from your Home screen.
  2. Tap on iTunes & App Store.
  3. Tap on Apple ID.
  4. Authenticate with Password or Touch ID, if required.

Tap on Country/Region.

  • Tap on Change Country or Region.
  • Choose a new country or region.
  • Tap on Next.
  • Tap on Agree to consent to the terms and conditions.
  • Enter your payment details.
  • Enter your billing information.
  • Tap Next.
  • You’ll now be set up in your new country and ready to go.

Of course, most people don’t want to change countries as much as they want to switch back-and-forth between them. That’s especially true of people outside the U.S. who often want to get their digital hands on the more plentiful content available inside.

How to switch between multiple iTunes or App Store countries

If what you really want to do is jump into the U.S. store — or another regional store — to grab an app, game, show, movie, etc. that’s simply not available in your store, you can do that too. First, you need to log out of your current regional iTunes or App Store:

    1. Launch App Store from your Home screen.
    2. Tap on Apple ID: [your current email] at the very bottom.

    Tap on Sign Out.

Next, you need to change the region on your iPhone or iPad:

    1. Launch Settings from your Home screen.
    2. Tap on General.
    3. Tap on Language & Region near the bottom.
    4. Tap on Region

Check off the new country you want to access (for example, Unites States).

Now, you need to create the new account for the new store you want to access. For that you need to find a *free** app that’s only available in the U.S. store (or only available in the store you want to switch to). Network TV apps are often the best choice. I’ll use Hulu, the U.S. streaming service, for this example.

    1. Go to the Hulu listing on the App Store on your iPhone or iPad. (Tap that link!)
    2. Tap Change Store if it stays stuck on your old region and says the item isn’t available in the current store.
    3. Go to the Hulu listing on the App Store again if it gets stuck on the feature page.

    Tap Get.

    Fill out the required information.

  • Tap None for billing information. You can get away with that for a free app, and you can always buy U.S. iTunes gift cards later if you want to purchase other content from the store.
  • Launch Mail to verify the email address you used for the U.S. account.
  • Finally, download Hulu (or your region-specific app of choice):

    1. Go to the Hulu listing on the App Store on your iPhone or iPad. (Tap that link!)
    2. Tap Get.
    3. Tap Install.
    4. Login to your new U.S. iTunes Account if you aren’t already logged in.

Repeat the Get and Install steps if you have to.

That should start your Hulu download and, with it, your switch to the U.S. Store.

From this point on, you should be able to switch stores simply by logging into and out of your iTunes or App Store account for the appropriate region. You can then tap on your favorite region-exclusive app to high-tail it back into the proper store. (Bookmark ’em to make it fast and easy.)

Any questions on switching iTunes or App Stores?

If you have any questions on how to switch iTunes or App Store accounts, drop them in the comments below!

Updated January 2019: Updated for iOS 12.

If you’re encountered the error message, “Your account has been disabled in iTunes and the App Store” when trying to login, you know what a massive headache this can be.

Without a working Apple ID you will not be able to do a lot of things, such as download or update apps, make purchases using Apple Pay, and more. You’ll also be locked out of various services that use your Apple ID, such as Facetime and iCloud. So, why has your account been disabled and how can you fix it?

Reasons Why Your Apple ID Is Disabled in iTunes and the App Store

Here are a few possible reasons why your account may have been disabled:

    1. Repeatedly entering an incorrect Apple ID and password.
    2. Not using your Apple account for an extended amount of time
    3. Billing issues such as unpaid iTunes or App Store orders
    4. Security reasons, causing Apple to suspect someone hacked your account
    5. Charge disputes on your credit card

    How Can You Fix It?

Fortunately, there are several things that you can do to recover your account and get it working again. Here are the steps to take to fix your disabled iTunes and App Store account:

    1. If the reason your account got deactivated is that you entered incorrect details multiple times, the best thing you can do is to wait 24 hours and then try again.
    2. You can also unlock your Apple ID by following these steps:
    • Head to https://iforgot.apple.com/
    • Key in your Apple ID. Then, click “Continue.”
    • The website will ask you a few questions. Don’t worry about this, as it is part of the verification process. It is Apple’s way of ensuring that the Apple ID is indeed yours. You may be asked to input your mobile number, email, etc.
    • After that, all you have to do is follow the instructions provided.
    1. If the previous step still doesn’t work, the next best course of action is to reset the password for your Apple ID. This process is a bit more complicated, though, but if you read the instructions carefully on the screen and follow them to the letter, you should be fine. To successfully reset your Apple ID password, carefully follow these steps outlined by Apple.

Before anything, make sure you will be using a trusted device or a reliable phone number to reset your password. Ensure that no one can obtain your new access details. Know also that this step will depend on the security measures you have in place. You can reset your password on your iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch, or Mac. There are different steps to follow depending on whether you turned on two-factor authentication or if you are using a recovery key.

Once you’ve completed the reset process, do the following:

    • When using your iOS device:
      • Go to Settings > Your name > iTunes & App Store > Sign Out
      • After doing this, sign in again using the new password you have set on your Apple ID.
    • When using your Mac:
      • App Store > Sign Out
      • iTunes > Sign Out
      • Sign in on both again using the new access details.
    1. Another solution to this dilemma is to check your restrictions and see if your iPhone is enabled, as it is possible that you may have turned off your in-app purchases. To check if your restrictions have been enabled, follow these steps:
    • Using your phone:
      • Settings > General > Restrictions > Enter your restriction passcode.
    1. If the solutions above don’t work and you still can’t activate your Apple ID, your best remaining option is to contact Apple directly. This way, you will be able to discuss the matter thoroughly with their Customer Service and find the solution to your problem. To contact Apple, follow the steps below:
    • Open the Apple Support Website.
    • Choose “Apple ID.”
    • Select “Disabled Apple ID.”
    • Set up a call with an employee. You may also describe the issue through online chat or email.

Alternatively, try contacting the iTunes support directly:

    • Go to: https://support.apple.com/choose-country-region/itunes
    • Select your region to redirect to your region’s iTunes support page.
    • Scroll and click on “Contact Apple Support.”
    • Click on “iTunes Store: Purchasing music, movies, apps, and books.”
    • Select “Account Management.”
    • Choose “Account disabled in the App Store and iTunes Store alert.”
    • Schedule a call with Apple Support

It is not impossible for anyone with an Apple device to encounter this kind of issue. Are you one of the people who has experienced getting your Apple ID disabled? Has it caused you much trouble? You can refer to the solutions mentioned above to fix the situation on your own without too much hassle. If you have any more questions or if you have any suggestions, don’t hesitate to leave a comment below.
