How to painlessly move your steam library to another folder or hard drive

Matt Klein has nearly two decades of technical writing experience. He’s covered Windows, Android, macOS, Microsoft Office, and everything in between. He’s even written a book, The How-To Geek Guide to Windows 8. Read more.

If you have a large Steam library, then you may be running out of space, or maybe you have it located on an old, slower spinning hard drive. Whatever the case, you can painlessly move your Steam collection to a new location.

It’s easy to acquire a large burgeoning game collection via Steam, especially if you participate in the various sales that Valve has every year. We’re all probably guilty to some extent of going a little overboard during the Steam Summer Sale in particular.

What this means is that you end up with a lot of games, and while you can always delete old games to make room for new ones, that typically means having to redownload those older games or restore them from a backup if you ever want to play them again.

In other cases, it’s often better to locate your games collection to a speedy SSD for faster, nearly instant load times. Having your games on an SSD can really improve your overall gaming experience.

So, what do you do if you want to upgrade? The choices are simple when it comes to either moving your collection a larger and/or faster drive, but how do you do that so you don’t have to redownload everything?

Moving Your Steam Library on Windows

Moving your Steam library is really quite simple and can be accomplished in a few short steps on either Windows or OS X.

To begin, on Windows first go to where your Steam library is located. If you aren’t sure, you can find it by checking where the Steam client’s shortcut is pointed by right-clicking on the Steam shortcut and selecting Properties.

In this case, our Steam library is on our D: drive, but let’s say we want to move it to our G: drive, which is an SSD we’ve installed especially for games. Before you do anything, make sure to shut down Steam. Then, all you do is drag the entire Steam folder to the new location.

Once that is done (it might take awhile if you have a lot of games), it’s time to rerun Steam. You could just re-run the Steam.exe from its new location, but we recommend reinstalling it, which will update all your shorcuts.

Head to steampowered.com and download the installer (unless you have it lying about on your hard drive somewhere).

Once you start the installer, simply point it to your new destination and all your shortcuts will be updated in the process.

That’s it! The next time you run Steam, all your games will be there and you can start playing anything you want right away, no need to redownload or restore anything from a backup.

Moving Your Steam Library on a Mac

If you’re using a Mac, the process is different, but no more difficult. Again, shut down Steam first before you begin.

Steam’s game files are located in

/Library/Application Support/Steam/SteamApps/ by default. This is the folder we’ll want to move to our new drive.

Note, you can get to the Library folder by clicking on the Go menu while holding the “Option” key. Also, do not move the entire Steam folder–just move the SteamApps folder.

Here you see the Steam folder we’re talking about. You can move this to any other location you want such as a bigger, more speedy SSD.

Now, open up the trusty Terminal and type the following command:

Now that you’ve changed to the Steam library in the Application Support folder, you need to make a symbolic link to wherever you moved the new SteamApps folder. Again, use Terminal do this by running this command, replacing /New/SteamLibraryLocation/ with the path to the SteamApps folder’s new location:

Make sure you point to the new location in the first part of the command and the old location is in the second part. Once you’re done, you can fire up the Steam client once again and games will now load from the new location.

Now you can move your Steam library whenever you need to upgrade your old drive. Once you discover what it’s like to have all that new speed and space, you may wonder why you didn’t do it sooner.

Before this point, I installed Steam on C, but put my games in D in a folder called SteamLibrary. Then, my computer was broken and had to reinstall Windows, therefore wiping the C drive. Recently, I reinstalled Steam in the D drive, but it made a new library folder, Games. When I try to select the old folder, it says I cant select it because the Games folder was already initiated as the library folder.

Is there any way for me to play the already installed games on SteamLibrary folder?

Lets say your old folder is
D:\SteamLibrary
Rename it to
D:\SteamLibrary_old

Create a new folder in the same place and name it
SteamLibrary

so you know have
D:\SteamLibrary empty
and D:\SteamLibrary_old full with old games.

Now that D:\SteamLibrary is empty Steam should allow you to make it a library location.
Load Steam and set Library to
D:\SteamLibrary

Once done exit Steam.

Rename D:\SteamLibrary_old back to D:\SteamLibrary

Load Steam. It should auto detect the games are now present. Even if things appear fine Verify the game cache of each game before playing them. Sometimes things need to be reinstalled/altered and Verifying will fix it.

Or maybe should I reinstall steam in C, if so the default library in in C, thus I can appoint the SteamLibrary folder to be the new library?

Unless you have an SSD or a HDD as C: that is faster than your D: it really won’t matter where Steam or your games are installed.

Personally I installed Steam on C:\ but thats cause I have an SSD. I also have a Games folder on C and another on D or E. I move currently playing games to C: and leave those I’m not playing to D.

You can jave as many game folders as you want. All spread on different drives. I have them over 3 drives but I could have them over as many drives or partitions as I want. Just need to make sure you set the default library before you download so you don’t have to move the game once downloaded.

Steam offers multiple library folders, and you can choose where you want to install games when you download them. And, thanks to an update, you can easily move a game after you’ve downloaded it without re-downloading the entire thing.

This process can save you from downloading tens or even hundreds of gigabytes of game data all over again, just because you got a new SSD and want to move a few games. It’s different from moving an entire Steam library folder, which moves every single game inside it—the following process will let you move only a few games rather than the whole library.

Step One: Create a Second Steam Folder

First, you’ll need to make a Steam library folder on the second drive if you haven’t already done so. To do this in Steam, click Steam > Settings. Select the “Downloads” category and click the “Steam Library Folders” button.

Click the plus button near the top.

Select the drive you want to create the library folder on, and click “Add”. A new folder named “SteamLibrary” will be created on the chosen drive.

The new folder you created will now appear along the top with your original steam folder.

Step Two: Move the Games Files to the Second Library

There are two ways to move an installed game.

The Storage Manager Window

The first uses the Storage Manager window, where we just created a new library folder. Select the drive that has the game installed, tick the box next to the game you want to move, and then click “Move” in the bottom right.

In the prompt that appears, select the drive with your new steam folder, and then click “Move.”

Be prepared to wait for this to finish — games can take up dozens or hundreds of gigabytes, and moving them can take quite a while.

The Games List

To move a game in your library, right-click it and then click “Properties.”

Click the “Local Files” tab and click the “Move Install Folder” button.

Select the Steam library you want to move the game to and click the “Move” button.

You’re done. Steam will move the game’s files to the other library location. To move other games, just repeat this process.

When installing a game in the future, Steam will ask which library you want to install it to, but you should be able to move your games at any time.

How to move Steam games to external hard drive? This article provides two methods to transfer steam games, including Steam built-in functions and third-party mobile software.

Can you install Steam games on external hard drive?

I have a gaming laptop because I travel, but I have a low storage capacity(250gb)and I can’t download big games now because I have no memory left and all my memory is on games, I have an external hard drive (1tb) but I can’t seem to be able to drag the games into the hard drive and delete it from my PC, any way I can do something like that?”

– Question from Steam Community

Why move Steam games to external hard drive?

With the continuous update of Steam games, its memory will also become larger and larger, which tends to occupy a large part of the hard drive space. When you want to download other programs on the hard drive, you may be prompted that the free space is not enough. In this case, if you can move Steam games to an external hard drive, you will not only avoid deleting hundreds of GB of game data, but also free up hard drive space.

Another reason is that some players want to move Steam games to SSD in order to pursue a better gaming experience. As the performance of SSD is better than HDD, this can greatly improve the running speed of the game.

How to move Steam games from PC to external hard drive?

There are two effective ways to show you how to move Steam games to external hard drive. One is a built-in feature of Steam and the other one is a powerful App Mover utility. Please read the following paragraphs carefully.

в”‚ Method 1. Move Steam games via Steam Settings

To achieve the purpose of transfer Steam games, Steam Settings plays an important role. With the help of it, you can move Steam games from PC to an external hard drive one by one.

1. In the main interface of Steam, follow “Steam” > “Settings” > “Steam Library Folders”.

2. Here, you can click“ADD LIBRARY FOLDER” and select the external hard drive you plan move to, hit “NEW FOLDER” and write a directory name.

3. Back to the main interface, right-click game name you want to move, and select “Properties”.

4. In this windows, click on“Local Files” and select“MOVE INSTALL FOLDER”.

5. Hit“MOVE FOLDER” to start the transfer.

6. Wait a moment, the process can be completed. Click on “Close” to quit.

в”‚ Method 2. Move all Steam games at once by App Mover

With the help of Steam Settings, you can transfer Steam games to an external hard drive, but only one can be moved at a time. If you want to move multiple games, you need to repeat the operation.

In this case, you need to seek help from third-party software. I highly recommend you to try AOMEI Partition Assistant Professional (suitable for Windows10/8/7/Vista/XP), it almost makes up for the shortcomings of all other application transfer tools on the market.

☞ The App Mover function can transfer all Steam games or non-Steam games to an external hard drive, and the transferred data will not be lost.
☞ The moved Steam games can be run directly on the external hard drive without downloading again.
☞ It has no file system restrictions and can be moved between NTFS, exFAT, and FAT32.
☞ You can also restore the moved Steam games to their original location.
☞ The operation is simple, and the graphical user interface is very clear, so non-technical personnel can use it quickly.

In addition to transferring apps, you can also use Merge Partition, Allocate Free Space to extend the storage of the partition.

Step 1. After the download is complete, open AOMEI Partition Assistant Pro and find the App Mover function in All Tools.

Step 2. In this window, select the disk where the Steam is located, and then click Next. You can also click Manage/Restore Apps to restore the moved programs.

Step 3. Check the applications you want to move, you can select single or multiple selections. Then select the drive where you want to move to, and click Move.

Step 4. Read the prompts carefully, click OK and Move.

Step 5. Wait for the transfer to complete.

Bottom Line

How to move steam games to external hard drive? This post provides two methods to achieve this purpose quickly and safely. You can choose one according to your actual situation. Last but not least, if you plan to use App Mover of AOMEI Partition Assistant in Windows Server, please try to AOMEI Partition Assistant Server.

Moving your Steam games around is trickier than you may think: Valve’s download platform is less flexible than you may think. If you need to move Steam games from one drive to another, check out our handy guide.

Today’s games are unapologetically massive. In the old days, game sizes were limited by their respective medium. With the advent of broadband internet and digital downloads, though, games have transcended physical mediums and grown exponentially in size, being limited only by hard drive space and bandwidth.

That is to say, there are plenty of reasons why users may need to shuffle their games between drives. Whether you need to allocate space on your C drive for the newest game or you’ve picked up a new external drive, there are a couple of ways to move installed games around in Steam, the world’s foremost digital PC gaming platform.

How to Move Steam Games to Another Drive

We’re going to tell you how to move one game, or relocate an entire Steam library, to another drive without any stress. If you just got a new hard drive, read our guides on how to wipe a hard drive and how to partition a hard drive to get up and running.

Create a New Steam Library

To create a new steam library, you’ll first need to set up a new directory for your Steam games, which is a straightforward process.

If you haven’t already, install Steam. Next, open Steam. With the Steam client open, click “Steam” in the utmost left corner. Then, choose “settings” from the dropdown menu. That will launch a separate window.

In this window, on the left-hand navigation pane, click “downloads.” Then, on the right-hand pane toward the top, click “Steam library folders.” The process will look like this.

From there, choose “add library folder,” then navigate to the corresponding drive and click “add new folder.” Give the directory whatever name you like. Once you’ve done that, click “select” to add it to your Steam library folders.

Moving Games to a New Library

Now that we’ve created a secondary library for games, you will want to move the game files to the new location.

Right-click an installed game and select “properties.”

From the pop-up menu, choose the “local files” tab. Go to the bottom of the list below the tab and select “move install folder.”

A new window will prompt you to select a library to move the game to from a dropdown menu. Select the Steam library you created previously, then click “move folder.”

That’s it. Steam will move the game’s local files to the new directory, and you’ll free space for that new game or all those cat GIFs.

The process of moving Steam library folders to a different location used to be a lot more tedious. That’s because Steam didn’t have a baked-in feature for moving games without reinstalling them, so make sure you’re running the latest version of Steam to enjoy these quality of life features.

Moving a Library

We just covered moving Steam games individually, but maybe you want to move an entire library to a new drive. It’s quite easy to amass a swelling collection of installed games, especially if you fancy the unrepentant glut of Steam sales. Hey, it happens to the best of us. Whatever the case, moving Steam libraries is simple.

Before starting, we recommend making a backup of the Steam library folder you’re moving, in case things run afoul. You can create a copy to keep locally or use Steam’s backup feature.

Step 1: Create a Steam library folder following the instructions above, then close the Steam client.

Step 2: Browse to the Steam installation folder to be moved. Once there, delete all files and folders except for “Steamapps” and “userdata.”

Step 3: Cut and paste the Steam library folder into the new path you created. For instance, it could be called E:\SteamLibrary

Step 4: Reopen Steam and log in, then point Steam to your new directory and verify game files if necessary. If you encounter issues, try uninstalling and reinstalling Steam. The Steam support page can also be helpful.

Steam and the Cloud

The Steam Cloud is great, and it makes us wonder how we survived the primitive age of gaming when cloud saves didn’t exist and save-files were limited to one machine or memory card.

Many people familiar with Steam likely know about Steam Cloud. It is cloud storage hosted by Steam that allows users to enable cloud saves, backup and restore games, store Steam user settings and the like. That said, not all Steam games support the feature, most notably older titles.

A workaround lies in using a cloud storage provider, such as Sync.com, or an online backup service, such as SpiderOak ONE, that doesn’t limit you to one sync folder. Using one of those providers, you can set up your own makeshift cloud saves to ensure that you’re using the most recent save-file of a game no matter where you’re playing.

To learn more about why we like Sync.com and SpiderOak ONE, read our Sync.com review and SpiderOak ONE review.

Final Thoughts

Those of you who have been using Steam since before 2017 probably remember the tedium of moving games between drives, and using symbolic links. Thankfully, moving Steam games and library folders is much easier these days, and hopefully we’ve demonstrated that.

When it comes to moving games in batches or moving library folders, Steam could be improved. Although, compared to rivals such as Origin and GOG Galaxy, there’s little to complain about.

Steam remains the dominant platform for Windows PC gaming, so perhaps resting on its laurels is to be expected. That said, Steam has brought quality-of-life features to the platform. Being able to apportion your Steam library across multiple drives without reinstalling games has long been requested, so it’s better late than never.

Valve’s Steam platform offers a very comfortable gaming platform. It is probably one of the best examples how an online distribution system can be successful. Not everyone likes Steam on the other hand, which is understandable as it has its quirks and problems, just like any other kind of gaming platform.

One of the most annoying problems of Steam, is the inability to select custom installation folders for Steam games. All games that are downloaded and installed via Steam are installed in the same folder on the same hard drive.

Update : Valve added an option to download and install Steam games to different locations natively in the Steam client. Check out Steam: alternative installation locations now available for instructions on how to do that.

This can be problematic, as even the biggest hard drives eventually run out of space. Many Steam users help themselves by uninstalling games to free up space on their hard drive, before installing new ones on the system.

Moving Steam to a different hard drive can be another effective option, especially if the other hard drive offers more space than the old one.

Steam itself offers no direct option to move the steam folder to another hard drive. It is however possible to do just that with some manual work. The same workaround can also be used to move Steam to another computer.

Lets assume that the Steam folder is currently located on drive c:, which does not have enough space anymore to store all the Steam games. Drive e: is a new hard drive with lots of free space.

To move Steam from c: to e: perform the following five steps:

  • Close Steam, make sure the client is completely closed.
  • Locate the SteamApps folder on the c: drive, it is located in Steam > Steamapps, usually in Program Files or Program Files (x86).
  • Move the entire folder from drive c: to e: root
  • Uninstall Steam completely after the games and files have been moved to the new drive.
  • Reboot your computer once
  • Install Steam again, this time on drive e:
  • Move the Steamapps folder into Steam folder.
  • Start Steam. The client will automatically recognize the games in the Steamapps folder and make them available again.

That’s how the Steam folder is moved to another drive or computer. Let me know if you are interested in a tutorial on how to move individual Steam games to another drive.

Title is a TL;DR

I recently found out that Steam has been sending all Steam related stuff into my C drive (475 GB and is almost full) with everything taking it up being from Steam’s folders. and I have a D drive with a 1.8 Terabyte of storage.

I was hoping there is a quick (relatively) and easy, painless method I can use to transfer it from the C drive to the D drive.
I came across this thread on google which I was about to follow but apparently it’s now obsolete according to comments.
https://steamcommunity.com/discussions/forum/1/558749824441239395/

So how am I meant to go about this?

Yeah, that guide isn’t really relevant now when we can install games on any drives.

First of all you should create a Steam library folder on that drive, this will let you install games on that drive instead of the normal Steam drive. I would recommend you keep Steam on C just in case, you can move all games to that other drive and still keep Steam where it is. Some games can have issues on other drives so it’s good to have the default thing there as an option.

This guide explains how to create new library folders: https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7418-YUBN-8129
The guide also tells you how to move your entire Steam installation but this guide below is easier and you can always do the full move later instead if something acts up.

This solves the issue about where to put the games, now you can start moving them.
Here is the trick to doing this manually: Only move the Steamapps folder and ALL it’s contents, let Steam create everything else. That includes steamlibrary folder and the Steam folder itself.
That folder is important so you might want save a backup of it on that large drive before trying to put it another location.

Now, just do this to move alll games in one go:
You already told Steam to create a Steamlibrary folder right? Make sure you did this.
Exit Steam.
Move the Steamapps folder from where it is currently to your new Steamlibrary folder
Start Steam.
Make sure steam finds all the games and verify them if needed.
If any games stop working then verify, try to move them back individually(explained below) or do the basic stuff here: https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=2274-IFLV-5334
But it should be fine.

Steam has a built in methods for moving individual games between libraries, this is good to know if any game has problems running and you need to move them back. You do this if you go to properties>Local Files and just select another drive and Steam handles it for that game.

If you’re a PC gamer with multiple hard drives in your computer, then you may well have dedicated one of those to your Steam library. If you run out of space on your game drive, you may well choose to get a new one and install it on your computer too. To be able to save Steam games to it, you need to configure a new Steam library folder in the program as well, or else Steam won’t know where to put them.

To do so, open Steam’s settings, by clicking “Steam” in the top-left corner of the main Steam window, then click “Settings” in the drop-down menu.

Open the Settings by clicking “Steam” in the top-left corner of the main Steam window, then clicking “Settings”.

Once in Steam’s settings, switch to the “Downloads” tab, and click “Steam library folders” at the top.

Click “Steam library folders” at the top of the “Downloads” tab in the settings.

To add a new Steam library folder, click “Add library folder” in the bottom-left corner of the “Steam Library Folders” window.

In the bottom-left corner of the “Steam Library Folders” window, click “Add library folder”.

Locate your new drive, or the new location you want to assign to Steam games. If necessary, click the “New folder” button in the bottom corner. Select the folder where you want your Steam games to be installed, then click “Select” in the bottom-right corner.

Tip: Steam will prevent you from setting two different installation directories on the same drive as this could lead to confusion about the installation location.

Select the folder you want to use to install Steam games, then click “Select” in the bottom-left corner.

You’ll now have a new location in the “Steam Library Folders” window. You will be able to select it as an install location when you install a game, or when you try to move the install directory of an already installed game.

You can configure the new Steam library folder to be the default install location by right-clicking on it in the “Steam Library Folders” window, then clicking “Make Default Folder”.

You can set your new folder to be the default installation location by right-clicking it in the “Steam Library Folders” window, then clicking “Make Default Folder”.

Všichni jsme pravděpodobně do jisté míry vinni do jisté míry trochu přes palubu během Parního letního prodeje zvlášť.

/ Library / Application Support / Steam / SteamApps / .

Nyní otevřete důvěryhodný terminál a zadejte následující příkaz:

Nyní, když jste změnili knihovnu Steam ve složce Podpora aplikací, musíte vytvořit symbolický odkaz na místo, kam jste přesunuli novou složku SteamApps. Znovu použijte tento příkaz spuštěním tohoto příkazu a nahrazením / New / SteamLibraryLocation / cestou do nové složky složky SteamApps:

What to Know

  • Click Steam >Settings >Downloads >Steam Library Folders >Add Library Folder. Select a drive and enter a name.
  • To move games to the new location, move your mouse over Library and click Games. Right-click the game you want to move.
  • Then, select Properties >Local Files >Move Install Folder. Select the destination drive and folder for your game. Click Move Folder.

This article explains how to move some of your Steam games to another drive.

How to Create a New Steam Game Installation Location

Before you can move Steam games to a new drive, Steam needs to know where it’s allowed to store games. By default, it wants to store games on the same drive you chose when you first installed the Steam client.

To accomplish this, all you need to do is add a new Steam library folder on the drive of your choice. Steam will create the folder where you tell it to, and then you’ll be ready to move some games.

You can create a new Steam library folder on any hard drive, solid state drive, or even removable USB drive that’s connected to your computer.

Here’s how to create a Steam library folder on a new drive:

Launch the Steam client.

Click Steam > Settings.

Click Downloads.

Click STEAM LIBRARY FOLDERS.

Click ADD LIBRARY FOLDER.

Select a drive for the new folder.

Enter a name for the folder, and click OK.

After Steam creates the new install folder, you’ll be ready to move games.

How to Move Steam Games to a New Drive

Once you have created a new Steam library folder on the drive of your choice, you’re ready to start moving games. This process requires you to move one game at a time, and it can take quite a while for Steam to complete the transfer process depending on the speed of your hard drives.

This method moves games from one drive on your computer to another, which doesn’t use up any of your internet bandwidth. If you delete a game and then reinstall it in the new folder, instead of moving it, you will need to download it again, which will use your internet bandwidth.

Here’s how to move a Steam game to a new drive:

In the Steam client, move your mouse over the LIBRARY menu item, and click GAMES.

Right click the game you want to move, and click Properties.

Click LOCAL FILES.

Click MOVE INSTALL FOLDER.

Select the destination drive and folder for your game.

Click MOVE FOLDER.

Wait for Steam to finish moving your game, and then repeat this process for each additional game you want to move.

Steam Games and Storage Space Problems

Dealing with limited storage space on the drive where you have Steam installed used to be a huge hassle.

In the early days of Steam, your games all had to be located on the same drive as the Steam client itself. If you ran out of space, you had to jump through hoops with third-party software applications, symbolic links, and other annoyances.

None of that is necessary anymore. Steam has the built-in capacity to move any game you have downloaded to any storage drive you have connected to your computer. All you have to do is tell Steam the new location where you want to be able to store games, and then tell it which games to move.

You don’t need a steam mover program, or any third-party tool, to move Steam games. These tools are no longer necessary because of Steam’s built-in ability to move games without outside assistance. Many of these programs are very old and haven’t been updated in a long time, so use them at your own risk.

I use (and have it much bigger) drive D: to store all my user data and games, but I have installed the Steam client on drive C: . When I was installing a first game (Warhammer 40000), I’ve chosen to place my library folder on drive D: and the game went there.

But now as I’ve got installed the second game (Portal), I can see that it was put on drive C: despite to the choice I’ve done previously. When I open Steam – Settings – Downloads + Cloud – Steam library folders, I can see both installation places in the list. Can I merge them into one?

I would even agree to use the default drive C: library (as I’ve replaced it with a symlink already). When I press to remove one library it says it can only remove empty ones.

Here is what I did though:

  1. Browsed to the steamapps folder that the game is currently installed into
  2. Copied the game folder for the game I wanted to move into the other Steam library (it’s important you copy it; don’t move it)
  3. Deleted the game within Steam (delete local content)
  4. Reinstalled the game, selecting the other game library

This finished “downloading” to the new location instantly, since the files were already present in the new location.

Important note on the folder structure of the destination library

It is important to note that as of trying this process on 2/11/2016 you cannot simply paste the folder into the destination “steamapps” folder but instead to a “common” folder within the “steamapps” folder.

For example if you created a Steam Content Library at “D:\Games\Steam” you will want to paste your game folder into “D:\Games\Steam\steamapps\common” resulting in something like “D:\Games\Steam\steamapps\common\Grand Theft Auto V”

I took a more. technical approach.

If you’re not comfortable with editing files or if you just want a simpler approach, please use one of the other answers. Otherwise, this lets you skip having to “delete” and “reinstall” the game when you relaunch Steam — it’s all seamless. It’s not actually time-saving or anything, but if you want to feel badass, you can follow what I did:

Note that Steam has updated the format of its .acf files since I originally posted this answer, such that you no longer need to edit them. It does still have the benefit of being seamless and not requiring having to “delete” and “reinstall” the game, however. I’ve updated my answer in the interest of not confusing future readers, but check out sj26’s answer for a summary of basically the same updated process.

Find out the game’s app ID in the store. (You can easily get to this by viewing the game in your library, and clicking the link that says Store Page, although this won’t work for games no longer in the store such as Deadpool; you’ll need to use a search function in that case.)

Open the SteamApps folder where the game resides. Make sure Steam isn’t running.

Open the game’s manifest file, appmanifest_.acf , in a text editor (I did say technical).

Find the line that contains the string “installdir” . Here’s mine:

This is your game folder. Typically, this folder can be found in the common folder within SteamApps ; the main exception are Valve games still under the legacy distribution system and not SteamPipe, but that’s out of the scope of this answer.

If you want, back up this folder, as well as the manifest file itself.

Move the game’s folder. In my case, I moved Team Fortress 2 in the common folder from the old library to the new library.

Move the manifest file to the new SteamApps folder.

Relaunch Steam, and the game should be there without you having to do anything further within the program. You can just launch the game right away.

If you want, you can verify that the game is in its new location. You can do this by right-clicking, choosing Properties and going to the Local Files tab. If your new library resides on a different drive letter, this drive letter should be reflected. From here, you can click Browse Local Files. . You can also Verify Integrity of Game Cache. but if you didn’t modify any files in the process that should not be necessary.

Windows

Mac

/ Library / Application Support / Steam / SteamApps /

You’ve been putting it off, but your hard drive ‘s only got 20 gigabytes left, and you’re trying to install a 25 gigabyte game from Steam. You’ve got an external with a lot more space on it, but you don’t know how to move your games over.

You want to install the new game on the external drive, and you don’t want to uninstall an old favourite to make room. Luckily, learning how to do this in Steam is easier than it seems.

How to move Steam games to another drive

1. Open the Steam application on your Mac or PC.

2. Find the game you want to move in your Library.

3. Right-click the title and select “Properties.”

4. Open the “Local Files” tab and select “Move Install Folder.” Once your file browser opens, navigate to your second drive and then click “OK.” If you don’t have a second hard drive to move the files to, the “Move Install Folder” option won’t appear.

5. If you have a second drive but still don’t see it, then Steam hasn’t made a folder on the other hard drive before, and doesn’t know to look for it.

  • You can solve this by starting an installation on the drive you want to move to — you don’t need to complete it. Start installing a different game, and select the new drive from the dropdown menu called “Choose location for install.” Steam should offer the “Move Install Folder” option from now on.

If you want to move the folder to an external drive manually, you can instead select “Browse Local Files” in step four from the above steps. This will open the folder in your operating system’s file explorer.

1. Go up one level — that is, open the folder that contains the folder that Steam opened for you. By default, Steam labels this folder “common.” In this common folder, find the folder for your game.

2. Cut and paste it using Windows by highlighting the folder, pressing Control + X, and then navigating to your external hard drive and pressing Control + V.

On a Mac, instead click and drag the folder into the external hard drive’s Finder window while holding the Option key.

You can play the game directly from the external hard drive, but it’ll still require a Steam connection.
