It’s 2020 and SkiFree Is Back

This game is different from SkiFree, of course. Instead of skiing, you’re surfing. Instead of dodging yetis, you’re avoiding sea monsters. But the gameplay feels pretty familiar, and anyone who remembers playing Microsoft SkiFree in the 90s should get a dose of nostalgia from it.

This game may seem a little silly, but it’s much more fully-featured than Google Chrome’s dinosaur game. Like Chrome’s famous dino game, it works entirely offline. If your internet connection goes down and you want to kill a few minutes, you can always load the surfing game and play it entirely offline.

It’s actually quite a fun game. The most Ski-Free of the modes is “Let’s Surf,” where you surf the world’s filthiest ocean while trying to evade the tentacles of a purple sea monster. You have hearts and energy, and you’ll have to evade the obstacles for as long as you can.

You start the game in Let’s Surf mode, but you can change the modes by going to the settings menu in the top right corner. You can also use this menu to enable high visibility mode (which adds more clearly defined boxes around your surfer and the obstacles), and reduced speed mode.

The second mode is time trial, which is a race, as the name implies. This one was punishing, I don’t mind telling you. I haven’t pulled out that many hairs since I played Trials Rising. The third mode is “Zig Zag,” in which users have to navigate through as many gates as possible, using the game‘s diagonal movement to try and hit your marks. Neither mode have the same frenetic energy as Let’s Surf, but they’re still a fun diversion.

So now you know how to find the Edge Surf game, good luck against the sea monster!

Microsoft Edge Secret Game The Verge

If you’ve been using the Chrome desktop browser for some time now, you might already know of the hidden dinosaur game Easter egg. Microsoft has also taken a similar route with its Edge browser. The company has built a surfing game into the browser that feels similar to the classic SkiFree skiing game released for Windows way back in 1991.

The surfing game can be accessed by entering the following URL [edge://surf/] in the address bar of the Edge browser. The game offers three modes, including a classic surf mode, a time trial, and a slalom mode in which you are required to sail between surf gates. The classic surf mode is essentially an endless surfer where you can rack up high scores while avoiding obstacles and a Kraken that can follow you around. The time trial mode requires you to collect the most coins in a short amount of time, requiring you to rely on speedy routes. There is also a zig-zag mode, which I felt to be quite difficult.

Microsoft also went out of its way to offer keyboard, mouse, touch, and gamepad support, including support for the Xbox One controller. A leaderboard also exists, but it is only limited to your PC.

This surfing game is not something that will be doing the rounds on Twitch or Mixer, but I feel that it still requires some attention for Microsoft’s creative touch. So, if you’re ever stuck without an internet connection, you can quickly switch to this surfing game and create personal records while waiting for your connection to restore. The game has been added to Edge Canary and the Dev builds of the browser. The game will also be coming to the stable version of the browser very soon.

Once you’ve tried the game, do come back and let us know how you feel about it. Is it more difficult or more fun than Google’s Dino game? Share your thoughts in the comments.
