How to quickly show your desktop on mac

Windows 10 was launched months ago and it was a major change in UI over time. In Windows 10, Microsoft eliminated a number of GUI bugs present in Windows 8. The start menu was a major change that was desperately requested by the users. Keeping the start menu aside, there were also a bunch of modifications in GUI as well as performance. This major change in GUI confused a lot of users as it took a while for them to understand what was going on.

Some of the users have experienced a problem i.e. Desktop icons are missing in Windows 10. It is pretty annoying for the users who have a lot of stuff on their desktop and suddenly, they find it disappeared. Keeping that frustration in mind, I am going to try in order to fix this issue.

Reasons Behind the “Desktop Icons are Missing in Windows 10” Problem:

A majority of people are considering it a bug inside Windows 10 but it is not. It can happen accidentally and you may have modified some settings unknowingly. Windows 10 has two types of Modes built-in for the users’ facilitation i.e. Desktop and Tablet. Somehow, you might have enabled the Tablet mode leading towards the disappearing of Desktop icons.

Solutions to Fix the “Desktop Icons are Missing in Windows 10” Problem:

There are a number of solutions based on the type of issue you are experiencing with your Desktop icons. You can try these methods to check which one works for you. Before you go ahead with the methods below, Download and run Restoro to scan for corrupt files from here, if files are found to be corrupt and missing repair them and then see if the icons are now back, if not then proceed with Manual steps below.

Method # 1: Checking for Visibility of Desktop Icons

If all of your Desktop icons are missing, then you might have triggered an option to hide desktop icons. You can enable this option to get your Desktop icons back. Follow the steps below.

  1. Right-click inside an empty space on your desktop and navigate to View tab at the top.
  2. Inside the View tab, check for the Show desktop icons at the bottom. In your case, it might be unmarked. So, mark it as checked by clicking over it. See the image below for illustration.

Method # 2: Enabling the Desktop icons Visibility

If your default desktop icons are missing, you can make them visible inside the Settings. Follow the steps below.

  1. Search for Settings window using Cortana and open it from the search results.
  2. Inside Settings, click on Personalization. From the next window, select the Themes tab from the left pane.
  3. On the right pane of the Themes tab, click on Desktop icon settings to open the settings in order to enable the Desktop icon visibility.
  4. Select the icons you want to show on the desktop and click on Apply and OK buttons afterward.

Method # 3: Disabling the Tablet Mode

As tablet mode is integrated inside Windows 10 to have a better touch experience for the Windows Tablet users, you might have accidentally enabled that mode resulting in the disappearing of icons.

  1. Open the Settings again and click on the System to open the system settings. On the left pane, click on Tablet mode and turn-off the tablet mode (if it is turned on) from the right pane.
  2. Close the Settings window and check if your desktop icons are visible or not.

Method # 4: Initiating SFC scan

An SFC scan checks your whole computer for bad drivers or corrupted files and automatically fixes the issues. Therefore, in this step, we will be initiating an SFC scan. For that:

  1. PressWindows” + “R” keys simultaneously to open the RUN prompt.

  2. Click on the “View” button and select the “Auto Arrange Icons” option. How to quickly show your desktop on macSelecting “Auto Arrange Icons” option
  3. Check to see if the issue is fixed.

If you store work files on your desktop, you might be minimizing windows to view the desktop. Or you might want to view the desktop to quickly hide an app window. Here’s how to quickly show your desktop on Mac.

Use a Keyboard or Mouse Shortcut

The quickest way to view the desktop (without setting up a new feature) is to use a keyboard shortcut. There are, in fact, several ways that you can do this:

  • Command+F3: Use the Command+F3 (Mission Control) keyboard shortcut to quickly view the desktop. This shortcut works on most modern Macs.
  • Fn+F11: If you have an older Mac, or if you’re using a keyboard that doesn’t have the media keys, you can use the F11 or the Fn+F11 keyboard combination to reveal the desktop.

You can also create your own shortcut (using the keyboard or the mouse) to reveal the desktop. To do this, click the “Apple” logo found in the top-left corner of the screen and then select the “System Preferences” option.

Here, click the “Mission Control” option.

If you’re using a mouse with extra buttons, you can also assign it to show the desktop.

Assign a Hot Corner

You might not know this, but there’s a hidden feature in your Mac called Hot Corners. It basically lets you perform actions simply by wedging the cursor at one of the four corners of the screen.

For example, you can open the Notification Center, Mission Control, and yes, show the desktop by moving the cursor to one of the edges of the screen.

You’ll find this feature by going to System Preferences > Mission Control. Here, click the “Hot Corners” button found in the bottom-left corner of the screen.

Now, click the drop-down next to one of the edges (we went with the top-left corner) and choose the “Desktop” option. Then click the “OK” button to save the changes.

Going forward, when you move your cursor to the top-left corner of the screen, your Mac will instantly move the windows away and show the desktop. To hide it, jam the cursor to the same edge once more.

Use the Trackpad Gesture

If you’re using a MacBook with a trackpad (or if you’re using a Magic Trackpad), you can quickly show the desktop using a simple gesture.

Just spread your thumb away from three fingers on the trackpad to reveal the desktop. Pinch in with your thumb and three fingers to hide the desktop.

How to quickly show your desktop on mac

If you want to show the Mac desktop quickly, the fastest way to do so is often with a keyboard shortcut to reveal the desktop. This approach will push aside all on-screen windows, apps, and other information, and show only the Mac desktop – all without closing any apps.

These tricks can offer a fast way to access files and other icons on the desktop, or even just to quickly hide whatever is on the screen by shuffling away windows to show the Mac desktop instead.

The Mac actually has several Show Desktop keyboard shortcuts in Mac OS and Mac OS X, and for Macs that are equipped with a Trackpad, there is an easy to use gesture to show the desktop as well. Let’s review the keyboard shortcut options for showing the desktop on the Mac. Keep in mind these tricks work to show the desktop on all vaguely modern versions of Mac OS system software, as long as they include support for the Mission Control or Expose features.

Show Desktop Keyboard Shortcuts on Mac OS

There are two Show Desktop keystrokes immediately available for all modern Macs, each of the keyboard shortcuts takes advantage of the Mission Control feature of Mac OS.

Show Mac Desktop with: Command + F3

The first keyboard shortcut that shows the Mac Desktop is Command F3. Press both the Command key and the F3 key together.

How to quickly show your desktop on mac

Pressing this keystroke combination will immediately activate the Mission Control “Show Desktop” feature in Mac OS and push all windows on screen aside to reveal the desktop of the Mac.

You can hide the desktop and return to the prior window state by pressing Command+F3 again at any time, or if you interact with an onscreen item, launch a new app, or open a new window, that will also return all the windows back to their prior status over the desktop again.

The animated GIF below demonstrates how this effect looks, revealing the desktop on Mac after the keystroke has been pressed successfully:

How to quickly show your desktop on mac

Show the Mac Desktop with: fn + F11

Another Show Desktop keyboard shortcut for Mac OS X is Function F11. You will need to press both Function (fn) key and the F11 key together to show the desktop with this keystroke.*

How to quickly show your desktop on mac

Just like the command+F3 keyboard shortcut, pressing FN + F11 together will activate the Mission Control “Show Desktop” feature and slide all windows off screen to show the desktop of the Mac, where you can access icons and whatever else.

You can hide the desktop and return all the windows to their normal position again by pressing Function+F11 again, or by interacting with another item on screen which opens a window.

* Note that if you have the keyboard setting for “Use f1, f2, etc keys as standard function keys” enabled then you won’t need to press the Function key.

Show Mac Desktop Keyboard Shortcuts Not Working? Here is How to Enable Them

If for whatever reason the keyboard shortcuts to show the Mac desktop are not working, then you can enable them in the System Preferences of Mac OS:

  1. Go to the  Apple menu and choose “System Preferences”
  2. Select “Mission Control”
  3. Look under the Keyboard and Mouse Shortcuts section and next to “Show Desktop” choose “F11” in the pull down menu
  4. Try the F11+function keystroke to show the desktop again, it should work now

How to quickly show your desktop on mac

These shortcuts will work even if you have the desktop disabled, some icons not shown, and are hiding the desktop icons on a Mac, but in those cases you will just see the wallpaper background picture rather than any desktop icons of course.

And it’s use-case is a bit different, but there’s also a keyboard shortcut to minimize and hide all windows on a Mac, which will show the desktop in a roundabout way by hiding everything else on the display. Note that’s quite different from what is detailed above, which shows the desktop without hiding and minimizing anything.

Switching between active Desktops/Spaces in OS X with the three fingered sideways swipe is very quick, but an even faster method is by using the Control keys.

The first option is to use the Control + Arrow keys, which is enabled by default. As you might expect, Control + Left Arrow switches to the desktop Space to the left, Control + Right Arrow goes to the right.

The fastest method utilizes Control + Number keys, and needs to be enabled separately:

  • Open “System Preferences” from the  menu
  • Click on “Keyboard” and then select “Keyboard Shortcuts”
  • From the list on the left, choose “Mission Control”
  • Check the boxes next to “Switch to Desktop 1” and “Switch to Desktop 2” – this will be Desktop 3, 4, 5, etc, if you use many Desktop Spaces
  • Close out System Preferences

Now you can hit Control+1 to enter Desktop 1, Control+2 to switch to Desktop 2, and so on. This is by far the fastest method to switch Desktops in OS X Lion, Mountain Lion, Mavericks, and whatever they call the next one.

How to quickly show your desktop on mac

The reason for the speed increase relates to the animation for switching windows, which is accelerated when using the Control+Arrow keys, and made even faster with the Control+Number shortcut. Alternatively, the swipe gesture generally follows your finger movements and the inertia of the swipe, which is significantly slower.

If you assigned apps to Desktops than clicking on the app will also use the faster method similar to the Control+Number keyboard shortcut.

Finally, if you want switching between active desktops to be even faster, either don’t store any icons on your Desktop or hide all icons from the Mac desktop (if you don’t want to use the Terminal command, you can also use the free DesktopUtility tool to do this from your menubar). Hiding desktop icons shows the biggest speed boost on older Macs running new versions of OS X, since it prevents the need to redraw icons when switching desktops.

  • If you want a bigger iPhone screen, you could buy a newer model — or, you could learn how to mirror your iPhone’s screen on a Mac computer.
  • Using a Mac’s QuickTime player, you can easily mirror your iPhone screen on your Mac.
  • You can also use the third-party app Reflector to optimize iPhone content that is set up for AirPlay to be played on your computer.
  • Visit Business Insider’s Tech Reference library for more stories.

One of the iPhone’s greatest assets is its connectivity. Built into Apple products are several ways to easily share what you’re viewing or working on from your iPhone to a Mac or iPad.

This can be useful if you want to put a photo album or display an app on your computer, and works really well with video content accessed via your iPhone’s apps.

If you want to use your Instagram mobile app on somebody else’s Mac, for example, you can plug your iPhone in and project your Instagram directly on the computer.

Because connectivity within the Apple family has been a priority nearly from the beginning of the company’s existence, you can mirror your phone to your computer easily using just QuickTime and your iPhone’s default operating system.

How to mirror your iPhone to a Mac using QuickTime

1. Connect your iPhone to your Mac using your Lightning to USB cable.

2. Open Quicktime on your Mac.

3. Click on File in the menu bar at the top of the screen.

4. Scroll down to “New Movie Recording.”

5. Next to the red record button (bottom middle), click on the down arrow. You should see your iPhone named in this list. If it’s not there, try disconnecting and reconnecting your iPhone.

6. Tap your iPhone.

7. Your phone is fully mirrored on your computer, in the exact shape of your iPhone screen.

If you press the red record button, you can also record a video of your iPhone’s screen.

There is another way to broadcast iPhone content on your Mac: Connecting your phone to Reflector 3, a third-party app for your Mac.

How to mirror your iPhone to a Mac using Reflector

Reflector is an app that, like Quicktime, will mirror your phone exactly. The bonus of Reflector is that it doesn’t make you take a potentially massive screen recording.

Note, however, that Reflector is only free for a week — after that, you’ll have to pay a fee ($18 to $20, depending on what type you download) to keep using it on your Mac. And during your free trial, there will be a watermark on the screen whenever you mirror.

1. Download Reflector 3 on your Mac.

2. Open the Reflector program on your Mac.

3. Open content on your iPhone which allows for AirPlay — in this example, I used the NFL app.

4. Hit the AirPlay symbol (it’s a computer screen with a solid triangle at the bottom).

5. It will ask you what you want to AirPlay to; tap on the name of your Mac.

6. Your iPhone will ask for an AirPlay Code.

7. An AirPlay code will show on your Mac.

8. Type in the AirPlay code on your iPhone.

9. Your iPhone content will now show up on your Reflector program on your Mac.

Reflector also has versions available on PC.

Apple

When you click the – (dash) symbol at the top right of a window like this.

. it keeps what was in the window open and running (instead of clicking the X which closes and stops it running)

However if you have many windows open and layered on top of each other it can feel a chore the hide each window one by one until you minimize the last one to finally reveal the Desktop.

Here are three methods of minimizing all windows and instantly revealing the desktop in one action.

Method 1 – Click the bottom right edge

Have you ever noticed the vertical stripe at the very bottom right of your screen?

If you click on the right of it you are clicking on a ‘hidden’ button (well almost) which will instantly minimize all windows and reveal the desktop.

Method 2 – Right Click the Task Bar

Another action (actually 2 actions) is to do this:

1. Right click in an empty space on your task bar (i.e. not on an icon)

2. Select Show the desktop (with a left click)
