This is useful if you want to record your desktop audio for mixing and sampling, but also if you want to play things through your microphone. In games, for example, you could use this to annoy your teammates with in-game music, and while this is not something we endorse, the tech behind it is pretty cool.

To get started, head to VB Audio’s website and download VB-Cable. You’ll want to extract the download, right-click the “VBCABLE_Setup_x64” file, and then run it as Administrator.

However, Sound Recorder provides limited functionality. What’s even worse is the fact that it makes background noise in the recording.

Step One: Enable Stereo Mix in Windows computer

A SysAudio client can treat a filter factory for a virtual audio device similarly to a filter factory for a hardware or software component. When asked by a client to instantiate a particular pin on a virtual device, SysAudio constructs the graph automatically and manages the graph’s internal pin connections transparently to the client. This allows the client to treat a filter graph as a single filter, thereby avoiding complexities of graph management such as inter-filter communication.

You don’t have to hold up a microphone to your computer’s speakers to record its audio. Even if you don’t have a Stereo Mix option on your PC, you can easily record the sound coming from any Windows PC.

You can record the sound coming from your PC in numerous ways, and we’re going to show you the three best we’ve found. The first two options use only software, and the third relies on an old trick that connects your computer’s audio output to its audio input with an audio cable.

Option 1: Stereo Mix

Stereo Mix is sometimes called “What U Hear.” It’s a special recording option that your sound drivers might provide. If it is included with your drivers, you can select Stereo Mix (instead of a microphone or audio line-in input), and then force any application to record the same sound that your computer is outputting from its speakers or headphones.

On modern versions of Windows, Stereo Mix is generally disabled by default—even if your sound drivers support it. Follow our instructions to enable the Stereo Mix audio source on Windows. After enabling Stereo Mix, you can use any audio-recording program, and just select “Stereo Mix” as the input device instead of the usual “line-in” or “microphone” option.

On some devices, you may not have this option at all. There may be a way to enable it with different audio drivers, but not every piece of sound hardware supports Stereo Mix. It’s unfortunately become less and less common.

Option 2: Audacity’s WASAPI Loopback

Don’t have a Stereo Mix option? No problem. Audacity has a useful feature that can record the audio coming out of your computer—even without Stereo Mix. In fact, Audacity’s feature may be even better than Stereo Mix, assuming you’re willing to use Audacity to record the audio. This method takes advantage of a feature that Microsoft added in Windows Vista named the Windows Audio Session API (WASAPI). The feature also functions in Windows 7, 8, and 10, and helps make up for the lack of a Stereo Mix option on modern Windows PCs.

In Audacity, choose the “Windows WASAPI” audio host, and then choose an appropriate loopback device, such as “Speakers (loopback)” or “Headphones (loopback).”

Click the Record button to start recording the audio in Audacity, and then click Stop when you’re done. Because you’re using Audacity, you can easily trim and edit the sound file when you’re done.

Update: If this doesn’t work, you may also need to select the correct number of recording channels to match your device using the dropdown box to the right of device selection box. For example, If you have a 7.1 channel headset, select “8.”

Audacity’s tutorial website explains why this feature is actually better than Stereo Mix:

“WASAPI loopback has an advantage over stereo mix or similar inputs provided by the soundcard that the capture is entirely digital (rather than converting to analog for playback, then back to digital when Audacity receives it). System sounds playing through the device selected for WASAPI loopback are still captured, however.”

In other words, your recorded sound file will be higher-quality when using Audacity’s WASAPI loopback option.

Option 3: An Audio Cable

If neither of the first two options suit your needs, there’s always the low-tech solution—although it’s a bit of a hack. Just get an audio cable with a male 3.5mm connector on both ends. Plug one end into the line-out (or headphone) jack on your PC, and the other end into the line-in (or microphone) jack. You’ll stop hearing the sound your computer produces, but you can use any audio-recording program to record the “line in” or “microphone” input. To actually hear the sound, you could get a splitter, and then output the audio to headphones or speakers at the same time you direct it back into your computer.

Sure, this is inconvenient and silly compared to to the first two software-only options we talked about. But, if you desperately need to capture the audio coming out of your computer in an application that isn’t Audacity and you don’t have Stereo Mix, the cable trick allows you to do this.

To record audio, you must have an audio recording device configured on your computer, or on a remote machine if you access Microsoft Feedback Client, Test Runner, or Exploratory Testing from a remote device.

To record audio as part of a feedback or testing session on a remote machine that is running Microsoft Feedback Client, Test Runner, or Exploratory Testing window, you must configure audio redirection settings on the remote machine. You must also enable record from this computer when you connect to the remote machine.

We recommend that you open Microsoft Feedback Client on your local computer. Redirection will decrease audio quality. Microsoft Feedback Client does not require you to record audio as part of the feedback session.

To set a default microphone on your local computer

To record audio from your local computer, you must set a microphone device as the default device.

Choose Start, Control Panel.

In the Control Panel window, choose the Hardware and Sound link, and then choose Sound.

In the Sound window, choose the Recording tab.

Select a recording device from the list provided and then choose Set Default.

To enable remote audio capture

If you edit the registry incorrectly, you might severely damage your system. Before you make any changes to the registry, you should back up any valued data on the computer.

Choose Start, choose Run, enter regedit, choose the OK button, and then set the value of the following registry key to 0.

To connect to the remote machine, choose Start, choose Run, enter mstsc , and then choose the OK button.

The Remote Desktop Connection dialog box opens.

In the Computer list, choose or enter the name of the computer to which you want to connect, and, in the User name box, enter your user name.

On the Local Resources tab, choose the Settings button.

Under Remote audio recording, choose the Record from this computer option button, and then choose the OK button.

Exit and restart whichever client tool that you are using, for example Microsoft Feedback Client, Test Runner, or Exploratory Testing.

You must restart you client in order for it to register the audio settings.

How to record your pc’s audio with a virtual audio deviceThe sound card on your desktop computer has 1/8th-inch ports on the rear to accept other types of audio input (blue for line in, pink for mic in). If you have a custom-build computer you may have these ports also routed to the front as well.

If you record audio at all with these ports, be it via a microphone built-in to a headset or having a mixing board fed a signal thru line in, you’re going to get what’s called white noise. This is a hissing sound that occurs due to fact you’re using an analog means of feeding audio to the sound card. There is no way to avoid it and you are forced to process your sound afterwards thru a digital filter for noise reduction. In other words, it never sounds good unprocessed.

My recommendation for anyone that records audio is to completely ditch using analog ports. They’re really old and sound really crappy.

If you record audio via USB instead you will be amazed at how much better everything sounds when recorded.

Method 1: Use a USB headset with mic attached

I use the Logitech Clearchat Comfort USB and people who listen to me speak over this microphone are astounded at how good it sounds. There are no tricks to using this. The difference is digital and that’s why it’s so clear.

If you game at all, having a USB-based headset with mic is a must-have especially if you use it for in-game voice chat. Not only will the audio sound clearer but your spoken voice will also be understood better.

Method 2: Use a standalone USB-based microphone

I’ve mentioned this product before but it bears repeating – the Blue Snowball is one of the best USB microphones ever made. It will record anything and I mean anything. Great for voice, great for instruments and also great as an “ambient” mic. It has a sensitivity high enough where you could place it clear across the other side of the room, speak softly from far away and it would still “hear” you. I have nothing but good things to say about this mic.

Method 3: USB mixer

USB mixers are nothing new to people who record audio, but it’s still true that most people aren’t aware they exist. The mixer shown here is an Alesis Multimix 8 USB. If you do any semi-pro (or even pro) recording at all this is a really handy mixer to have. It will accept XLR microphone input, 1/4th-inch input and feed out thru USB. If you’ve got stuff to record but can’t go digital with them, you should take a look at this.

To note: These mixers are almost never in computer retailer shops but rather music shops like Guitar Center and Sam Ash. If you need to see one “in the flesh” you’ll need to go there.

Additional note: If you’ve got the cash, yes there are mixers with more than 8 channels, rack mount flaps and those with FireWire connectivity. But bear in mind if you’re just recording yourself, the Multimix 8 will do the job just fine.

The great debate: Software or Hardware based mixing board?

Something that has been a subject of debate since the advent of software based mixers is whether or not you need a standalone hardware based mixer at all.

My response to this is if you record, yes you do. My reason for stating this is that it is far easier to control and manage your sound using tactile knobs and sliders instead of scrolling sliders on-screen. Professional studios has proven this to be true because they have never given up their standalone mixing boards. The only difference now is that the boards can be digitally controlled – but they haven’t been replaced.

Fear not adding in audio hardware when you need to. 🙂 “Virtual” mixing boards, while nice, can be annoying.

How to enable your system sound recording in Windows Vista or Windows 7

To record sound in Windows Vista or Windows 7 you need to make sure the stereo mixer is turned on by following these steps:

1. Navigate to the Control Panel.

2. Select the “Sound” section by double-clicking on the corresponding icon to open the settings dialog.

3. Select the “Recording” tab.

4. Open the context menu with the right mouse button and select the “Show disconnected devices” function.

5. A window will open and you will see all inactive devices. Right click on “Stereo Mix” (“Wave Out Mix”, “Mono Mix”, etc.) and click “Enable”.

7. To make the device you just turned on as the default recording channel select it from the list and click “Set as default”.

The steps sequence for turning on the stereo mixer for Windows 10 is different. You will need:

1. Open the “Parameters” section in the “Start” menu (there is an icon Gear in the left column).

2. Click the “System” button and then select the “Sound” tab.

3. In the “Related Options” section click on the “Sound Control Panel”.

4. Select the “Record” tab.

5. Open the context menu with the right mouse button and select the “Show disconnected devices” function.

6. A window will open and you will see the list of inactive devices. Right-click on “Stereo Mix” (“Wave Out Mix”, “Mono Mix”, etc.) and click “Enable”.

8. To make an activated device the default recording channel select it in the list by clicking on “Use as default”.

The “Stereo Mix” availability depends on your sound card and drivers. You may not see this line in the list of disabled devices.

If you managed to enable sound recording as described above apply special settings before starting recording with the HyperCam.

1. Download the HyperCam sound recorder for Windows 7/ Vista from our website.

2. Install the Windows 7 / Vista sound recorder software on your computer.

3. Double click the HyperCam audio recorder icon on the desktop to launch the program and start recording computer audio. You can also record music.

4. Navigate to “Parameters”, select the “Sound” tab, check the “Record sound” checkbox and select “Stereo mixer” to record internal sound in the “Source” drop-down list (when working with a stereo mixer consider that it must first be turned on in system; you can also use “System Audio”). Be sure to select computer screen recording with sound (including from a microphone) and turn off screen recording. If you record sound with video and you only need sound, you can remove video from audio using the HyperCam Media Editor or another program from Solveigmm – Video Splitter.

5. Adjust compression parameters (if necessary). By default the recording is performed in the MP4 format, and audio is encoded in the AAC format in this case. You can get uncompressed audio if you are recording a video in the AVI format.

6. To start recording audio click the big red button – this is the start recording button.

7. If you need to stop and then resume audio recording on Windows 7 / Vista you can use the interface buttons that stand for “Stop”, “Pause”, “Start”.

To see the result of your capture audio actions navigate to the “Recent Recordings” section.

MixPad currently features support for playback to ASIO, DirectSound, Windows Core Audio and MME devices and recording from ASIO, Windows Core Audio and MME devices.

NCH recommends ASIO or Windows Core Audio for both playback and recording. ASIO and Windows Core Audio will provide the best performance and the lowest possible latency and offer the greatest accuracy when synchronizing recordings. ASIO will also allow you to play and record from multiple channels of the same device. If you don’t have an ASIO capable sound card then you should choose Windows Core Audio as your playback and recording option.

Another option is to install the driver from ASIO4ALL which provides a layer over the regular soundcard, allowing it to be used as an ASIO device by software such as MixPad. You can download it for free from http://www.asio4all.com/.

Setting up the Project Audio Options

Open the Options dialog (File –> Options. ) and click on the General tab. Here you are able to set the playback device you would like MixPad to use. Looking to let users leverage Teams through Windows Virtual Desktop (WVD)? No problem! To enable Audio/Video redirection, we’ll need to set the following custom RDP properties:

  • audiocapturemode:i:1 enables audio capture from the local device and redirects audio applications in the remote session.
  • audiomode:i:0 plays audio on the local computer.
  • camerastoredirect:s:* redirects all cameras.

To do this, all we need to do is run two PowerShell commands against our WVD tenant:

Now – you may notice that through the HTML5 WVD connection, there is no microphone input device under settings:

This is because, unfortunately, HTML5 does not support Audio Redirection:
