How to rename your airpods

How to rename your airpods

Whether you want to give your AirPods to someone else, or you just want those AirPods Pro to be more identifiable when you’re looking through your Bluetooth connections, here’s how to rename them all.

Apple wants you to enjoy listening to your AirPods instead of fiddling around with setting them up. So by default, your original AirPods, AirPods 2, or AirPods Pro get a pretty generic name — and you may never even notice what it is unless you want to change it.

During the setup, the sole thing that Apple really checks for is whether you already have a pair of AirPods.

If you do not, then yours will be called by your first name and the model of AirPods, so “William’s AirPods,” for instance. If you do have a second pair, the default becomes “William’s AirPods #2.”

Given the combination of how good AirPods sound, and how the battery is so small that its charge time shrinks to nothing after a couple of years, you are quite likely to get a second pair one day.

Then if you’ve got the original and AirPods 2, there may be little to distinguish between them. To be sure you’re leaving your house with the pair you want, you need to know the name.

Flip open the AirPods charging case next to your iPhone and that phone will show you an image of the AirPods plus their name. As long as you remember to do this, you won’t have a problem having two sets of AirPods.

Maybe you’re not the only “William” in your household, though. Or at work, you could easily be sharing an office with people who have your first name.

And lastly, perhaps you either want to be individual — or you really do not people on your train to figure out your first name just because they searched for Bluetooth.

How to rename your airpods

There are all these reasons to rename your AirPods, and you can do it quickly.

How to rename AirPods or AirPods Pro

You do this via the Bluetooth settings on your iPhone, and it is straightforward except for the fact that it’s Bluetooth. If your iPhone loses its Bluetooth connection to your AirPods as you’re in the middle of renaming them, it will fail, and you’ll have to start again.

The best way to ensure that doesn’t happen is to wear the AirPods. Rather than just opening the charging case with them in, actually pop them in your ears. You don’t have to play anything through them, but equally you can.

Once you’ve done this, and the iPhone has shown its image of the AirPods, do the following.

  • Open Settings, Bluetooth on your iPhone
  • Tap on the i icon next to the AirPods you want to change
  • Tap on Name
  • Edit the name to whatever you want
  • Tap the back arrow twice

Check that the new name is displayed in the Bluetooth list, and you’re done.

When they first hit the market, Apple AirPods took the world of wireless earbuds by the storm. Now in their second iteration, AirPods are still the most popular earbuds for Apple users.

How to rename your airpods

There are many different ways to customize your AirPods settings to your liking. This article focuses on changing the AirPod name, but we’ll also provide you with some tips and tricks to take full advantage of the earbuds. Let’s dive right in.

Customizing the Name

By default, the earbuds display the name in the following format: (Your Name)’s AirPods. This is fine for most users, but if you want to make the earbuds stand out, the name change is a must.

There are two ways to rename the AirPods – via your iPhone/ iPad or via a Mac. The following sections provide a step-by-step guide for each method.

Rename AirPods Using iPhone or iPad

Step 1

Access Settings on your iPad or iPhone and select Bluetooth. Turn the Bluetooth on and pair AirPods with your device.

Useful AirPods Tips and Tricks

Besides changing the name, there are a few other hacks to adjust the AirPods’ settings to your preferences.

Double Tap Options

The AirPods’ Bluetooth menu allows you to tweak double-tap options for each pod. The settings include:

  1. Move to the next or previous track
  2. Stop, pause, or play audio, be it music, podcasts, or audiobooks.
  3. Double-tap to trigger Siri and use her to control sound or utilize other Siri functions

Microphone Settings

By default, the AirPod microphone is on Automatic, so it doesn’t matter which pod you use. However, you can set it to Always Right/ Always Left. This way only the selected earbud acts as a microphone even when inside the case or away from your ear.

Auto Ear Detection

AirPods know they are in your ear. If you remove them the playback automatically pauses or stops (when both earbuds are off.)

Disabling Automatic Ear Detection means the audio will keep playing even if you are not wearing the buds. It is advisable to keep this feature as default because it helps you save some battery life.

Locate Your AirPods

At first glance, AirPods might look like a gadget that’s easy to lose. But once you start using them, you realize the chances of them falling out are slim to none, even if you go running.

However, you can use “Find My iPhone” to locate the earbuds if you manage to displace them, or the pods end up in the wrong hands. This works from iCloud.com or the “Find My iPhone” app.

Better Battery Life

AirPods give you about five hours of battery life on a single charge and it doesn’t take long for them to recharge. But if you want to squeeze out some more juice, you can use only one bud while the other recharges and switch when needed.

For this to work smoothly, you need to keep the automatic microphone and detection options on. And don’t worry, you will be able to listen to stereo sound with one AirPod.

Charging Case Status Lights

The status light in the middle of the AirPod charging case is color-coordinated. With the earbuds inside, the case shows the AirPods’ charge status.

If the case is empty, the light shows the status of the case. For example, amber shows there’s less than one full charge. Green, on the other hand, indicates a full charge. And a flashing light means the earbuds are ready to connect.

Share Phone Calls and Music

It’s super easy to share music and phone calls with AirPods. You just give one of the earbuds to your friend or a family member, and that’s it.

However, only one bud can work as a microphone at a time.

Cut the Wire

Compared to some other wireless earbuds, AirPods offer more customization options. Changing the name gives a personal touch, but the double-tap options are probably the most useful. Either way, now you know all the tricks to get the best out of your AirPods.

    How to rename your airpods

The first time you set up your AirPods, you’ll notice that Apple assigns them a default name based on the device with which you’re pairing them. While this is fine to get you started, chances are you’ll soon want to rename them. There are so many wireless headphones users who own Apple AirPods that, sooner or later, it’s likely you’ll be sharing a Wi-Fi network with another owner. When that happens, life will be a little easier if you’ve given your AirPods a name of their own. Thankfully, while learning how to connect AirPods to your Apple device may seem a bit tricky at first, renaming them is actually pretty simple.

Now, that’s not a bad thing but it can become awkward if you’re trying to find your AirPods in an overcrowded list of Bluetooth devices all called “AirPods”.

    How to rename your airpods

Luckily, AirPods can easily be renamed to whatever you choose. It’s a good way to avoid confusion with other owners. You’ll never be left wondering if you grabbed someone else’s by mistake or vice versa. Below, you’ll find instructions for changing the name of your AirPods and a few other useful tips.

    Name Change and Other Settings

AirPods are easy to customize. Changing the name is just the beginning. You can also change the double-tap commands, Automatic Ear Detection, and other features as well. And whilst it’s outside of the scope of this article to go through all those options, you’ll find them in the same menu where you’ll perform the name change.

    How to rename your airpods

First, make sure your AirPods are charged and close to the device they’re paired with. Open the case and access the settings on your iPhone or iPad.

Go to your Bluetooth settings and find your AirPods on the list of paired devices. Tap on the information icon that looks like a lowercase “i” in a circle next to the name. This will display the settings menu for your AirPods.

The third option on that screen will be the name of the Pods themselves. Tap where it says “Name” and you’ll be transferred to another screen. The default name will be AirPods so tap on that field and you’ll be prompted to type in a new name. When you’re done typing, tap the “Done” button on the keyboard.

That’s it! You’ve renamed your AirPods. Now, if you’re like us, and you’re having trouble coming up with that perfect name, you can use this website to find some great suggestions.

    AirPod Name Changing Back

Some users report a strange issue when they’re trying to rename their AirPods to the plain name “AirPods” along with a few other specific names. A complete list of problem names isn’t available but if you’re having this issue, know that you’re not alone.

It seems that every time they rename their Pods and then put them back in the case, the name reverts to the default name scheme from Apple. In the same way, the name reverts back when the AirPods are switched to another device.

This is a very unusual problem and Apple has very little information about why it happens. If you’re having this problem, try to unpair the earphones, rest, and then re-pair them. You can do that through the very same settings menu you accessed to change the name. Tap on “Forget This Device” then hold down the button on the back of the AirPods case until the status light turns amber and then white.

Re-pair the AirPods and try renaming them again. If this doesn’t fix your issue, try updating your firmware on all your devices.

If the problem still persists, try renaming your AirPods to the desired name and place a blank space at the end. The blank space won’t show up on the list of devices but has been shown to be an effective workaround.

    Change the Name from Windows

If you want to change the name on your Windows PC, you can do that too. You’ll just be changing the name as if the Pods were any other Bluetooth device.

Start by placing the AirPods near the PC that you’re using and open the charging case. Press and hold the button on the back of the case until the status light turns white and then release the button. That will set the AirPods to pairing mode.

Pair them with the PC and then access the Control Panel by typing “Control Panel” into your system search bar and selecting the first option. Click on “Hardware and Sound” in the Control panel and then “Devices and Printers” in the following window.

Now you’ll be presented with all the peripherals connected to the computer. Find the AirPods and right-click their icon. From the drop-down menu that appears, select “Properties”. In the “Bluetooth” tab of the Properties menu, you’ll have a field where you can enter a new name for the device. Enter the name and click on “Apply” at the bottom.

That should do it. Your AirPods are renamed; you can close your charging case.

    What’s in a Name?

Renaming your AirPods is a very simple procedure. It’s also encouraged because it will make your life easier in many ways. Don’t feel the need to be too clever with the name, as long as it stands out, that’s good enough.

All you have to do is access the settings app on your iOS device and find the Bluetooth devices. Find your AirPods from among the devices and tap on it. Tap on the name of your AirPods in that menu and just type in a new name. It’s that easy. Never get your AirPods mixed up again!

Once you’ve successfully paired new AirPods or ‌AirPods‌ 2 to an iPhone or iPad, they’ll be given the default name “[Your Name]’s ‌AirPods‌.” If you want, you can change this name by following the simple steps below.

  • AirPods are starting to show up everywhere, and with more and more people owning them, it can be fun to make yours a little more personalized. One way you can do that is by giving your AirPods a unique name, something a bit more fun than “John’s” or “Jane’s AirPods.” With just a few taps, you can change your AirPod’s name right from your iPhone or Android phone.

Changing the name of your AirPods or AirPods Pro just takes a quick trip to the Settings app on iOS or Android. We’ll cover both ways below.

Method 1: Change Your AirPods’ Name on iOS

We’ll assume you’re running iOS 13 or later, which is a good idea to utilize your AirPods to their full potential. Open the Settings app, then tap “Bluetooth” to access the Bluetooth options, which is where you’ll find your AirPods’ customization preferences. Alternatively, you can:

    • Long-press the “Bluetooth” icon in the expanded connection controls in the Control Center, then tap “Bluetooth Settings.”
    • Ask Siri to “Open Bluetooth settings.”
    • Type “Bluetooth” in the pull-down search on the home screen, then tap “Bluetooth” under the Settings results.

No matter how you get there, tap the information (i) icon next to your AirPods in the list of Bluetooth devices. Your AirPods need to be connected to your iPhone for the customization settings to show up. So if you see “Forget This Device,” make sure to connect to the AirPods when they’re out of their case. Either that or keep them in the case but open the lid so you can connect.

To change the name of your AirPods or AirPods Pro, tap the “Name” field at the top of the screen. You can clear the old title by tapping the (x) to the right of the current name. Next, type the name you’d like, then press the blue “done” button on the keyboard to save. If you change your mind, hit the “Back” button in the upper left to cancel.

How to rename your airpods How to rename your airpods

And that’s it! Now, when you see your AirPods or AirPods Pro on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac, they’ll have the custom name you set up. The name will also appear on Android devices and non-Apple computers when first pairing the AirPods, but if they were already paired and saved as another name, that name might be retained. But you can change the name of your ‘Pods on Android to whatever you want.

Method 2: Change Your AirPods’ Name on Android

We’ll assume you’re running Android 10 or later and have paired the AirPods or AirPods Pro already. Also, we only show the instructions on stock Android below, so if you have a Samsung Galaxy, LG, or another brand, the process may be slightly different.

Open the Settings app, then tap “Connected devices” to access the Bluetooth options, which is where you’ll find your AirPods’ customization preferences. Alternatively, you can:

    • Long-press the “Bluetooth” icon in the Quick Settings pull-down.
    • Ask OK Google, Hey Google, or Google Assistant to “Open Bluetooth settings.”

    How to rename your airpods

Now, under Available Media Devices or Previously Connected Devices, tap on the cog to the right of your AirPods’ or AirPods Pro’s name. Unlike with iOS, you do not need to be connected to the headphones to change its name. Now, tap the pencil icon at the top of the details page, change the name to whatever you want, and hit “Rename” to save it. You can also select “Cancel” if you change your mind.

How to rename your airpods How to rename your airpods How to rename your airpods

Now, when you see your AirPods or AirPods Pro on that Android device, you should see the custom name. It can be different than the name you chose on iOS, if applicable, but if you ever unpair the AirPods with the Android phone, whatever name that iOS has for the AirPods (or the stock AirPods’ name) is what will show up when being paired.

Changing the name of your AirPods on an Android device will not change the name on an iPhone or other Apple device, nor will it change the name on another Android device or a computer. The default name can only be customized on iOS, and on Android, you can customize it on a device-by-device basis.

When you pair and connect a Bluetooth device on Windows 10, it is given a name that is specified by the device manufacturer. This holds true for simple devices like headphones, and also for more sophisticated devices like smartphones. The name is there simply so that users can easily identify the device. Windows 10 doesn’t use the device name to communicate with it. Instead, it uses the MAC address which users cannot change. If you’re not happy with the name a device has, or you have several devices with similar names, you can rename Bluetooth devices to anything you want. Here’s how.

    Rename Bluetooth devices

Turn on Bluetooth on your Windows 10 PC, and connect the Bluetooth device that you want to rename.

    How to rename your airpods

Open Control Panel and go to Hardware and SoundDevices and Printers. Select the Bluetooth device that you want to rename, right-click it, and select Properties from the context menu. On the Properties window, go to the Bluetooth tab. You will see the device’s default name next to its icon. This name can be edited. Click inside the name field and rename the device to whatever you like. Click Apply, and close the window.

    How to rename your airpods

Next, turn off the device that you just renamed. Do not simplify this by disconnecting the device and then reconnecting it. It is imperative that the device is turned off, and then back on again for the change to be applied, and remembered after a reboot.

Once you’ve turned the device off and then on again, return to the Control Panel, and under Hardware and SoundDevices and Printers you will see that the device name has been updated.

Normally, the device name should not change after this no matter what however, there might still be some exceptions. If your device’s driver has been updated, there is a small possibility that the device name is reset to the default one.

If you unpair a device, and then pair it again then it will be paired with its default name and you will have to rename it. Disconnecting and reconnecting will not change the name. If the device’s name doesn’t change after you turn it off and on again, you should try turning both Bluetooth and the device off, and on again. If the change doesn’t apply, you should also try a system restart.

Changing the name of a Bluetooth device is something that only applies to your system. If you pair and connect the same Bluetooth device to another Windows 10 PC or to a smartphone, it will connect with its default/manufacturer specified name.
