How to reset your roku’s network connection

If you’re suffering network problems in Windows 10 that you just can’t seem to fix, the Windows 10 Anniversary Update now includes a feature that lets you reset your network back to how it was when you first installed Windows.

Resetting your network really should be used as a last resort in your troubleshooting process. Before trying it, you should try some basic fixes first. Running the built-in network troubleshooter can often solve your problems, or at least point you toward steps you can take that might help. Windows also includes some good command line utilities that can help you figure out where your problem lies. But if all else fails, or you’d just like to take your network back to the beginning, resetting your network might help.

When you reset your network, Windows will forget your Ethernet network, along with all your Wi-Fi networks and passwords. It will also forget additional connections, such as VPN connections or virtual switches, that you’ve created. Resetting will disable and then reinstall all your network adapters and set other networking components back to their original settings. You’ll even have to run through the questions you saw when you first installed Windows where you select whether you want your PC to be discoverable on the network.

Once you’ve exhausted your other troubleshooting efforts, resetting the network is easy. Open Windows Settings by pressing Start and clicking the Settings button (or just by pressing Windows+I on your keyboard). On the Windows Settings screen, click “Network & Internet.”

On the “Network & Internet” page, select the “Status” tab on the left and then, on the right, scroll down and click the “Network reset” link.

The “Network reset” screen warns you about what will happen when your network is reset and also lets you know that a restart will be necessary. Click the “Reset now” button to reset the network and restart your PC.

When asked to confirm the network reset, click the “Yes” button.

And that’s all there is to it. After restarting your PC, Windows will walk you through setting up your network. Again, resetting your network should really be a last resort kind of thing. But if all your other troubleshooting efforts have failed, a full reset might be just the answer.

  • All Roku players come with a handy remote control that needs to be paired with the player. If it stops working, you might need to reset the remote.
  • You also need to reset the remote if you want to use it with a different Roku player.
  • Some Roku models come with an infrared remote that doesn’t have a reset button, and doesn’t ever need to be paired or reset.
  • You can reset the remote in minutes by rebooting the Roku player and then pressing the reset button on the remote.
  • Visit Business Insider’s homepage for more stories.

All Roku media players come with a simple but effective remote control. And while the exact appearance of the remote varies from one Roku model to another, they all feature a home and back button, a directional pad, and buttons to play and pause video. Some models come with quick-launch buttons for popular streaming services, like Netflix and Hulu.

And while the remote isn’t essential — you can also control your Roku via a smartphone app on your iPhone or Android device — it’s pretty convenient. But if you can’t get your remote to connect to your Roku player, you might need to reset it. You can also reset the remote if you want to use the remote on a different Roku player.

There are actually two kinds of Roku remote controls: an Enhanced remote (which is a “point anywhere” remote that controls the player no matter which way it’s pointed) and the simpler infrared remote (that requires direct line of sight with the player to operate).

You can only reset an Enhanced remote — the infrared remote can’t (and doesn’t need to) be reset, as it will work with any compatible Roku player just by being pointed directly at it. If an infrared remote isn’t working, try replacing the batteries.

Most Roku models come with the Enhanced remote. These models include the Roku Streaming Stick, Roku 2, Roku 4, Roku Premiere, and Roku Ultra.

How to reset the Roku remote

1. Remove the batteries from your Roku remote.

2. Unplug the power cable from your Roku player, wait for 5 to 10 seconds, and plug it back in again.

3. When you see the Roku’s home screen on your TV, insert the batteries in the remote.

4. Press and hold the reset button, which is located in the battery compartment, for about 5 seconds.

5. The pairing light on the remote should start flashing (depending on the model remote, this pairing light is either in the battery compartment near the reset button or on the front of the remote).

The Roku remote should reset and pair with your Roku player.

I have 3 Roku premier devices. Yesterday 2 of the 3 stopped connecting to my wireless. The devices shows my wireless account, I have restarted and reset to factory settings on both. The device that continues to work is the farthest from my router. What am I missing?

I’m having similar issues, that I recognized last night on one device, and am seeing the same this morning on another device.

The devices are a Roku3 and a Roku Streaming Stick

I have FiOS Internet running on a G3100 Router

Both of these devices have been connected to the same wifi with no issues for a very long time. This morning they both show “Not Connected” and fail to connect whenever I attempt (same wifi, same password, no changes there).
The router shows them as ‘active’ devices, but the rokus won’t connect.

I have restarted both the router (multiple times) and the devices (multiple times)
I have completed a factory reset on the roku stick

  • If you need to restart your Roku device, most models have three ways of going about it.
  • Roku devices are designed for long hours of use, but if you find yours freezing or running slowly, it may need a restart.
  • Older Roku devices have only one option for restarting.

Roku devices are designed for long hours of use, but sometimes they freeze or become sluggish.

There are a number of reasons why a Roku device might have issues functioning properly. A newly installed channel app or a buggy software update might cause the device to freeze or run poorly.

When your Roku isn’t working quite right, it’s probably time to restart it.

Most Roku devices can be restarted three ways — through the settings menu, by unplugging the power cord, or through a series of button presses. Here’s how to restart a Roku:

How to restart Roku using your remote control

1. From the Home menu, scroll down to the Settings menu.

2. Select the Settings menu by pressing OK on the remote.

3. Scroll down to select the “System” option. Press OK on your remote to open the menu.

4. Scroll down to the “System restart” option and press OK on your remote.

4. Select “Restart.” Your device will shut off, then turn on again. You will see the bouncing Roku logo while the device is booting up.

How to perform a forced reboot

Alternatively, you can unplug the power cord for about two minutes, then plug it in again. This method is called a forced reboot .

How to reboot if your Roku device is frozen

Occasionally, if your Roku encounters a more serious glitch, it may freeze and block you from navigating the menus. In that case, you’ll need to enter a series of button presses on your remote control to trigger a reboot.

1. Press the Home button five times.

2. Press the Up arrow once.

3. Press the Rewind button twice.

4. Press the Fast Forward button two times.

It’s a bit complicated, but if you press the buttons in this order, your Roku will eventually turn off. After a few seconds, you should see the bouncing Roku logo, and your home screen will return soon after.

How to restart an older Roku model

Older Roku devices (first and second generation) may not include a System restart option in the settings menu. Devices without an option to restart must use the forced reboot method of unplugging the power cord. However, all current Roku devices have an option to restart through the settings menu.

Helpful tips

  • Restarting a Roku is not the same as a factory reset (commonly called a reset).
  • Restarting your Roku will not make changes to channel apps or any other settings.
  • Restarting your Roku will not erase your WiFi settings.
  • It is not necessary to regularly restart a Roku device. Restarting only when needed should be plenty to get it back into working order.

If you find you need to restart your device often for it to function properly, you could be experiencing issues with one of your installed channel apps, or the device itself. You can try deleting and re-installing any newly installed channel apps. Contact Roku support if you continually experience issues with your device. Troubleshooting steps are available through the Roku knowledge base .

What Does a Windows 10 Network Reset Do?

Resetting network settings in Windows 10 should be a last resort. When you initiate a network reset, it removes and reinstalls every network adapter currently installed on your system.

The Network Reset Utility was originally introduced by Microsoft after the Windows 10 Anniversary Update build (version 1607) so people could quickly resolve network problems caused by the update. The utility still remains to help people fix network connection issues.

The network reset utility also sets every networking component on your system back to the original factory settings. The components that get reset are as follows:

  • Winsock: This is an interface for applications that handles input and output requests to the internet.
  • TCP/IP: This stands for Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol, and allows all network devices on your computer to communicate over the internet.

If you’ve customized any of these settings from their defaults, you’ll need to note those settings because performing a network reset will remove any custom settings.

However, most people have all of these components set to automatically detect, so in most cases you won’t see any issues after a network reset.

How to reset your roku’s network connection

If you’re having Wi-Fi or cellular issues that you just haven’t been able to resolve using other methods, iOS gives you the option to reset all your network settings. This sets just about everything back to the factory default, giving you a chance to start from scratch.

Before diving in, it’s important to understand what resetting your network settings actually does. The reset restores just about every network-related setting on your device to the factory default. This includes cellular settings, so it can be useful as a last resort troubleshooting effort if you’re unable get a cellular connection where you think you should be able to. If you’re with a carrier, such as some mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs), that allows you to manually configure access point name (APN) and multimedia messaging service (MMS) settings, you may need to set them up again. On most major carriers, you won’t. It will happen automatically.

All your Wi-Fi networks will be removed and default Wi-Fi settings restored. This includes virtual private networks (VPNs) you’ve set up. If you’re troubleshooting Wi-Fi–especially connections to specific networks–you should try forgetting those networks individually instead. It will be less work than setting everything up again. If you do reset your network settings, you’ll need to connect to Wi-Fi networks again. You should also browse through your other Wi-Fi settings–like Wi-Fi assist and Wi-Fi calling–to ensure things are set up the way you want them.

And finally, all your Bluetooth connections will also be removed, so you’ll need to add those again and double-check your Bluetooth settings.

With all that said, actually resetting your network is pretty straightforward. In your Settings app, tap “General.”

Your device will restart with all network settings reset to their factory defaults. As we mentioned, resetting your network really should be a last resort when troubleshooting cellular, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth issues that you just can’t resolve any other way. But it’s still a handy way to start from scratch, possibly resolve stubborn networking problems, and set things up the way you want.

When you initially set up your Roku 1, you connected it to a Wi-Fi network. The device will continue using that network until it is no longer available, or until you manually choose a new option. But if you have connected to the wrong network inadvertently, then you will need to change the network settings on the device and connect to the correct network.
